Medikal is good, but Sarkodie remains the GOAT – Shatta Wale admits

Dancehall artiste Shatta Wale has tipped Ghanaian rapper, Sarkodie born Michael Owusu Addo, as the ‘Greatest of All Time (GOAT) of all time in the rap industry.

Naming Medikal as his favourite Ghanaian rapper, the ‘Gringo’ hitmaker also acknowledged Sarkodie’s consistency and longevity, which he said have cemented the rapper’s influence and dominance in Ghana’s entertainment industry.

“My favourite rapper is Medikal. His music is for Gen Z, but if we are talking about the best of all time, I would give it to Sarkodie,” Shatta Wale stated, he revealed during an interview with U.S.-based Ghanaian fashion critic Firestick, which was published on June 25.

He believes Medikal can take over Sarkodie’s reign if the ‘yes Sir’ hitmaker decides to resign from doing rap music in Ghana.

According to him, many of the new generation rappers copy Medikal’s style and energy.

“Medikal will be able to succeed Sarkodie hands down. What Medikal does is what most of the boys learn. The way Medikal raps is how plenty of the boys also rap. It’s just that we don’t speak the truth here,” he said.

Shatta Wale contends that Medikal is on the same level as international acts like Lil Baby and Central Cee — but tailors his lyrics to suit the Ghanaian market.

He said Medikal has chosen the Ghanaian style, though he is on the same level as the aforementioned acts, because if he chooses anything contrary, “he won’t eat “.

“The way we have Lil Baby and Central Cee, Medikal is also on their level, just that we are in Ghana, that’s why he gives those lyrics for the Ghanaian market.

If he doesn’t make his lyrics to suit the Ghanaian market, he won’t eat,” he said.

Shatta added that while he enjoys hardcore rap, he respects rappers who understand how to make their music appealing to a wider audience, which is something he believes Medikal does very well.

“I like rap music so much, but I love rappers who understand the commercial aspect of rap and that’s what Medikal does,” he added.

Meanwhile, Shatta Wale and Medikal are known to share a close friendship.

While some agree with Shatta Wale’s remarks, others have criticised him for being biased in ranking Medikal as the rapper most qualified or competent to take over from Sarkodie.

Let’s push Ibrahim Mahama or Alan Cash to succeed Mahama – Medikal to Ghanaians

Ghanaian rapper Samuel Adu Frimpong, popularly known as Medikal, has advised Ghanaians to vote for Mr Ibrahim Mahama (brother of President Mahama) or Alan Kyerematen, popularly known as Alan Cash (leader of the Movement for Change), to retain President Mahama’s legacy after his 4-year term is over.

Medikal believes that President Mahama’s leadership since his inauguration on January 7, 2025, has been nothing short of impressive.

Unfortunately, he is currently serving his final term, which is set to conclude in January 2029.

With hopes that the president will continue to favourably steer the affairs of the nation, Medikal appeals to Ghanaians not to hand over power to anyone other than Ibrahim Mahama or Mr Alan Kwadwo Kyeremateng in the next election.

“Make una pray make Mahama no leave power oo, very serious guy ! Even if he does finish his term, he should pass it over to Ibrahim Mahama, his brother or Alan Cash. These men have serious ambitions to make Ghana a great nation trust me,” Medikal wrote on his X account.

Mr Ibraham Mahama, who is known to be a businessman, has been very supportive of his brother’s presidency through the provision of financial aid to citizens who had challenges difficult to handle due to the lack of funds.

The businessman donated GH₵100,000 to various communities affected by tidal wave flooding in the Volta Region months ago.

He also donated $25,000 for a young girl’s kidney transplant including several others.

He contributed $100,000 towards leukemia treatment for another child several months ago.

His contributions to industry and social impact have earned him prestigious honors, including African Industrialist of the Year and the Ultimate Man of the Year award.

Alan Kyeremanten, on the other hand, visited Katamanto market with some senior members of the Movement for Change alliance in January to show their solidarity with victims of a fire outbreak that ravaged several shops in the area.

They donated GHS100,000 to the affected traders to ease their immediate challenges, a move that was deeply appreciated by the traders.

He has also been acknowledged for his vision for the youth in Ghana and several initiatives to make every nook and cranny of their lives better.

President John Dramani Mahama has made significant strides in governance, economy, education, and social welfare in the first 120 days of his new term, though several pledges are yet to be initiated.

The swift nomination of a full cabinet, reflecting Mahama’s commitment to getting the machinery of government moving without delay, forms part of his major accomplishments.

His administration has also formed a leaner government, reducing the number of ministers and presidential staffers.

One of the most praised initiatives is the introduction of a Code of Conduct for appointees, aimed at enhancing transparency, accountability, and ethical leadership.

In economic policy, Mahama has delivered on his pledge to convene a National Economic Dialogue, bringing together experts and stakeholders to shape a long-term recovery agenda.

Similarly, a National Education Dialogue was organized to realign policy direction in the education sector.

The administration has launched several social and environmental programs, including “Tree for Life” and “Blue Water”, which focus on reforestation and water resource protection. The No Fee Stress initiative has also been introduced to reduce the financial burden on basic school parents.

Mahama’s government has abolished the E-Levy, Betting Tax, and Emissions Levy, providing immediate financial relief to citizens and businesses, with the Covid-19 Levy expected to be removed in the next budget.

Other notable fulfilled promises include: Launch of the one Million Coders Programme to build digital skills among youth, rollout of the Mahama Cares social protection framework, introduction of the Adwumawura Programme to promote job creation, free tertiary education for persons with disabilities, free sanitary pad initiative for schoolgirls, Black Star Experience, a flagship tourism and cultural revival program, seed money for the Women’s Development Bank, Establishment of the Accelerated Export Development Council, probing the Akosombo dam spillage, which affected thousands and the restructuring of loss-making State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) to ensure efficiency

Alabaster Box sues Medikal for alleged copyright infringement on new track

Ghanaian rapper Medikal is being sued by the famous Acappella group Alabaster Box for copyright infringement regarding his new song “Welcome to Africa.”

The group claims Medikal sampled their hit song “Akwaaba” without permission.

According to Alabaster Box, the first 10 seconds of “Welcome to Africa” are nearly identical to their original song “Akwaaba,” suggesting that Medikal deliberately used their work.

They also point out that the use of the word “Akwaaba” in both the title and lyrics of Medikal’s song shows he was clearly aware of their music.

The group further accuses Medikal of aggressively promoting and distributing the song across major streaming platforms like YouTube, Audiomack, Spotify, Apple Music, and Boomplay, deepening the infringement.

Through their legal team, Alabaster Box has demanded that “Welcome to Africa” be immediately removed from all digital and physical platforms.

They also want all marketing, performances, and sales related to the song to cease, and for any contracts tied to its production and distribution to be terminated.

In addition to halting the promotion of the song, the group is requesting a full financial breakdown of the revenue earned from it, as well as the names of all individuals or companies involved in its promotion or distribution.

If their demands are not met, Alabaster Box says they will take the matter to court, where they will seek an injunction to stop the song’s use and request that all copies be destroyed.

They are also asking for compensation for the unauthorized use of their work, additional damages for willful copyright infringement, and reimbursement of legal fees.

As of now, neither Medikal nor his management has responded to the allegations.

Ghanaian rappers Medikal and Amerado have sparked a heated argument on social media over who holds the title of the ‘best rapper’ in the country.

The clash started when Amerado took to X (formerly Twitter) to claim that he deserves to win the ‘Artiste of the Year’ award at this year’s Telecel Ghana Music Awards, citing his hard work in 2024.

“Artiste of the Year conversation without Amerado under the 2024 Year of Review is an exposure of ignorance and consequently brutal to the industry and upcoming ones,” he wrote, highlighting a long list of achievements.

In response, Amerado accused Medikal that he had to cancel his New York show due to low ticket sales.

“Tell everybody about your flopped New York show you cancelled last year Obiaa ansi hor…..2025 who dey listen to Mia me dokono? Jon,” he retorted.

Medikal supports Fameye’s outburst on UK stage over DJ’s conduct

Ghanaian rapper Medikal has voiced his support for fellow artist Fameye after his recent on-stage incident in the UK.

During an interview with Hitz FM, Medikal expressed his views on the situation, noting that he would feel equally frustrated if faced with a similar incident while performing.

“I think he was right, because I’d be vexed if I’m performing and then you play another artist’s song. I don’t blame him,” Medikal said.

He emphasized that artists should have full control over their performances and proposed that Fameye could have avoided the issue by ensuring his own DJ handled the set.

Medikal also stressed the importance of promoters recognizing the specific needs of performers, including the presence of their team members, to guarantee a seamless event.

“So these are some of the things the promoters outside should consider, they should know that these artists need to come with their DJs, managers, team members, and anyone who will make the show go well,” he added.

He urged event promoters to take these considerations seriously to prevent such occurrences in the future.

This followed a viral video showing Fameye angrily confronting a DJ and event organizers during his performance at the ‘Xmas Highlife Concert’ in London on December 15, 2024.

Fameye’s frustration stemmed from the DJ’s failure to play his requested tracks and versions, which disrupted his set.

Despite rehearsing with the DJ on three separate occasions, the issues persisted, ultimately leading Fameye to leave the stage in frustration.

In a statement released on December 16, 2024, his management attributed the incident to the unprofessional conduct of the event’s DJ.

The statement further revealed that the organizers had rejected their efforts to include Fameye’s official DJ, insisting instead on using their own, a decision that significantly impacted the artist’s ability to perform effectively.

  • Davido supported one of his boys to disrespect me in a song – Medikal

Davido supported one of his boys to disrespect me in a song – Medikal

Ghanaian rapper Medikal, whose real name is Samuel Frimpong, has shared the reason behind his split with Nigerian musician Davido.

In a conversation with Abeiku Santana on December 16, 2024, Medikal explained that the trouble started when Davido asked him to cut ties with Nigerian artist Dammy Krane, who was having issues with Davido at the time.

Medikal agreed to Davido’s request, but when he later asked Davido to show the same loyalty, he didn’t get the same response.

“I didn’t want to talk about Davido’s issue, but the reason we fell out was because of loyalty. I had a song with Dammy Krane, and during that time, he was beefing with Davido. Dammy Krane went on social media to announce our collaboration, and Davido hit me up, telling me not to associate with him. Because we were cool, and he often visited me when he came to Ghana, I cut ties with Dammy Krane,” Medikal explained.

He continued, “But when one of Davido’s boys disrespected me in a song, I reached out to Davido to let him know, and his response was, ‘the game is the game.’ That’s when I realised he wasn’t loyal to me. Loyalty means a lot to me, and I grew up valuing it. So, when I saw he wasn’t reciprocating that loyalty, I felt some type of way.”

Medikal also addressed why he blocked Davido on social media after their fallout: “After I confronted him about the issue, he unfollowed me. I told him, ‘I didn’t tell you that,’ and I showed him what a real friend would do. So, he unfollowed me, and I was like, cool. To make it easier for him not to see anything of mine, I blocked him. It all comes down to loyalty,” he added.

The disagreement between the two musicians has caught a lot of attention, with Medikal stressing how important loyalty is in both friendships and professional connections.

‘It was Fella – Sister Derby recounts journey of her relationship, breakup with Medikal

Ghanaian singer and model Sister Derby recently discussed her former relationship with rapper Medikal, sharing insights into the factors that contributed to their split and how she managed the aftermath.

In a revealing interview with Arnold Mensah Elavanyo on Vibe in 5, she openly addressed the influence of actress Fella Makafui on the deterioration of their relationship, detailing the emotional impact of Fella’s behaviour on her.

Sister Derby expressed that she felt a sense of disrespect from Fella Makafui during her time with Medikal.

“She was mocking me,” Sister Derby recalled, explaining how Fella would frequently post insinuating comments on social media while engaging in an affair with Medikal.

Despite the pain, Derby admitted that she chose not to retaliate or publicly confront Fella.

“I didn’t really care about their relationship, but for him, I wished him well. And of course, it was painful because they were rubbing it in my face.

“Even those times, I never said anything to her or dissed her. I accepted it,” she said.

When it came to confronting Medikal about the rumours surrounding his involvement with Fella, Derby said he continually denied any wrongdoing.

However, as the lies became harder to ignore, the relationship eventually crumbled. Fella Makafui’s presence, once a hidden affair, became public, and she openly pursued Medikal after the breakup.

Years later, following Medikal’s marriage to Fella, he reached out to Sister Derby, asking her to perform at one of his concerts.

Initially, Derby refused, citing her discomfort about being around Fella Makafui, especially given their shared history.

“I didn’t want to be in the same space as her,” she confessed.

Nevertheless, Medikal assured her that Fella would not be involved, as they were said to be in the midst of divorce proceedings during that period.

Looking back, Sister Derby contemplated Medikal’s personality, recognising one specific quality in him that she respected.

I don’t have any regret about my actions regarding Fella, I was hurt – Medikal

Ghanaian rapper Medikal has stated that he has no regrets about his actions during his public fallout with his estranged wife, Fella Makafui.

During a recent appearance on Efia Odo’s Rants, Bants, and Confession Podcast, Medikal addressed the controversy surrounding his social media outbursts regarding his marriage.

He explained that his decision to go public was a reaction to Fella Makafui’s decision to involve the police, which he described as a major trigger for his response.

Medikal elaborated that his frustration stemmed from feeling disrespected despite the support he had provided Fella throughout their relationship.

He clarified that his intention was never to damage her reputation or business but rather to express his hurt and frustration.

He expressed disappointment that the situation escalated to a public spectacle and believes it could have been resolved more privately.

“I didn’t just wake up and make the video; she did something that annoyed me. The police coming to my house is what triggered me to say a lot of things at that time. Whatever I said was not meant to undermine her.”

“I was mad that she did such a thing after all the support I have given her. It was not intended to spoil her business. I don’t regret anything I did; it was caused by something. It just pains me that the issue could have been handled in a better way to avoid the social media outbursts and all that,” he said.

My past bad actions won’t affect my daughter – Medikal

During a recent appearance on the Rants, Bants, and Confessions podcast, rapper Medikal opened up about his thoughts on how his actions might impact his daughter in the future.

When asked about his concerns regarding his daughter potentially stumbling upon his past behavior and feeling embarrassed, Medikal stated that while he would never intentionally put his child in harm’s way, it’s inevitable that she will one day become aware of his past actions.

“I’m good, Island is good and obviously I am a very sane person. I know what I am doing and I am controlling myself. I won’t do anything that will endanger my child. Or even put her mother in a bad situation.”

The discussion comes in the aftermath of his divorce from actress Fella Makafui, during which Medikal made some derogatory comments that sparked widespread controversy on social media.

More recently, rumors have surfaced linking him to singer Eazzy, with some suggesting this relationship may have contributed to his breakup with Fella.

During the podcast, Efia Odo questioned Medikal on whether he’s mindful of the impact his actions might have on his daughter as she grows older, especially given that his words and deeds could affect her perception of him.

She pointed out that being a parent requires a different level of consideration and asked how he’s adjusting his behavior now that his daughter, Island, is involved.

Medikal responded confidently, assuring that both he and Island are doing well. He emphasized that he is a responsible and rational person, and he is mindful of his actions to ensure they don’t harm his daughter or put her mother in a difficult position.

“I’m good, Island is good and obviously I am a very sane person. I know what I am doing and I am controlling myself. I won’t do anything that will endanger my child. Or even put her mother in a bad situation.”

However, Efia Odo pressed further, expressing concern that Island might one day come across things Medikal has said about her mother, which could be troubling for her.

Medikal dismissed these concerns, remarking that it’s normal for children to learn about their parents’ pasts, comparing it to the children of adult film stars.

“It’s normal, even pornstars have kids. It’s nothing.”

He also briefly touched on how he and Fella Makafui are managing co-parenting, explaining that their daughter spends time with both of them, ensuring that her needs are met despite the separation.

Just a few days into the launch of ‘U Cook’ on UTV, Nana Ama McBrown took a moment during a phone interview with Medikal to address what she sees as imitators attempting to replicate her cooking show’s success.

In conversation with Medikal, who expressed interest in appearing on ‘McBrown Kitchen’ to showcase his culinary talents, McBrown noted the emergence of competitors who have adopted her cooking show concept.

McBrown acknowledged their attempts to be competitive while expressing her belief in God: “While I don’t begrudge anyone trying to earn their livelihood, those who are truly blessed by God will always shine.

“We are taking things to another level. I have seen some people busily putting together a cooking show but who God has blessed, he has blessed indeed. Although we all have to eat, those whom God has blessed will shine,” she retorted.

Meanwhile, Empress Gifty has been unveiled as the host of the latest cooking show sensation, ‘U Cook’, which was launched on UTV with notable personalities gracing the event.

The launch comes years after McBrown departed from hosting ‘United Showbiz’ on UTV to join Onua TV, a move that led to her cooking show being taken off the air.

It can be recalled that in an interview with Berla Mundi sometime in 2023, McBrown remained resolute, stating, “Why should I cry if my show isn’t aired?

“McBrown’s Kitchen has a life of its own in the realm of Ghanaian cooking shows. It’s not fading away; it’s thriving. I’m in a place where I feel welcomed.”

She further stated, “I paid for my show at UTV. It was not free. I paid for it. They considered me too sometimes if I am not well. They did some repetitions, but I have signed a contract that I paid. So, if the owners and producers refused to give me the airtime again, then I don’t know.”

Ghanaian musician popularly known as Medikal, Samuel Adu Frimpong, expressed that his music resonates deeply with his life experiences during an interview on Starr Chat with Bola Ray on Thursday.

“My music is my life, anything you hear in my music is what I am seeing and going through, what I’m hearing, and seeing.

“So I always create the songs with what I am going through so it depends on the mood I am in. When I am sad you might hear it in my song and when I am happy, making money or broke, you will hear it in my song,” Medikal narrated.

He described his decade-long journey in the Ghanaian music industry as a successful one, marked by significant achievements.

“It’s been beautiful despite the ups and downs, here and there. I will rate my experience in the music industry at ten over ten because I see it as all that I have been through is the reason I am here now.

“I am better than I was ten years ago. So I will rate it ten over ten no matter what we have gone through ten years ago. Five years ago I wasn’t in a position to make certain things happen,” he stated.

The rapper from Ghana went on to say that helping those around him has always been his desire.

“Right now, I have accumulated a lot of things that I can boast about. I can say that I can make this or that happen. I can change the lives of other people. That is what I have always wanted,” he added.

During an interview on the Starr Chat Show with Bola Ray on Accra-based Starr FM on Thursday, May 23, 2024, Medikal praised Gyan, stating, “Asamoah Gyan is my favourite player of all time.”

Gyan, Ghana’s record scorer with 51 goals and the country’s second most-capped player, has recently ventured into politics.

He was announced as part of the governing NPP’s campaign team for the 2024 elections and chairs the party’s sub-committee on Youth and Sports.

The retired footballer, who once revealed that he would have pursued a career in law or music if not for football, has already explored the music industry.

Gyan answered: “A musician or a lawyer, because you never win against me when it comes to arguments. You never win. I always find a way to win.”

As Gyan focuses on his new role in politics and sports administration, he remains a celebrated figure in Ghanaian sports history, having officially retired in June last year after a career spanning over two decades.

Medikal and D-Black reconcile after controversy over Fella

Ghanaian artiste Samuel Adu Frimpong, popularly known as Medikal, has reconciled with fellow musician D-Black following a dispute triggered by a controversial video.

In an interview on Starr FM, Medikal expressed his displeasure over a video showing D-Black and Medikal’s estranged wife, Fella Makafui, sharing a cigarette, which he found deeply upsetting.

Medikal admitted that the incident provoked him to use offensive language towards D-Black and publicly announce a separation from his wife.

During the interview, D-Black joined Medikal in the studio to share his perspective, leading to a resolution between the two musicians.

They exchanged handshakes and embraced, signaling the end of their disagreement.

Their exchange during the interview went as follows:

Medikal: I’m uncomfortable with the idea that people might suspect an affair between my wife and someone else.

D-Black: Brother, you should’ve reached out to me for clarification upon seeing the video.

Medikal: My issue is that you seem oblivious to the problem, as you continue to justify your actions.

D-Black: I’m offering explanations because there’s a misconception that I’m involved with her. I receive messages about it daily, including one this morning. Hence, I apologize for the incident.

Medikal: And I apologize for using the F word on you.

This reconciliation follows criticism directed at D-Black for fraternizing with Fella Makafui and smoking with her at a club, particularly during the time of her widely discussed separation from Medikal.

The dispute arose from a viral video capturing D-Black lighting a cigar for Fella Makafui shortly after the announcement of her breakup with Medikal.

Medikal is talking too much because he is heartbroken – Maurice Ampaw

Following the ongoing marital issues between Ghanaian musician Medikal and his wife, actress Fella Makafui, lawyer Maurice Ampaw has recommended that the rapper consider seeking psychiatric counseling.

Ampaw’s advice comes as Medikal continues to share public statements about his marital challenges, a behavior the lawyer believes is inappropriate and potentially harmful.

Speaking on Wontumi TV on May 22, 2024, Ampaw expressed concern about Medikal’s approach to handling his private matters on social media.

“We have a duty to keep certain aspects of our marriages private. Whatever transpires between spouses, especially in the event of a divorce, should not be aired publicly,” Ampaw emphasized.

The lawyer pointed out that Medikal’s recent actions deviate from this principle, stating, “So why is Medikal airing his grievances on social media? What is happening?”

Ampaw also expressed disappointment, noting that he previously held Medikal in high regard but now feels that the rapper’s behavior indicates he is struggling with the situation.

“I used to commend you, but it appears you’re overwhelmed by heartbreak,” Ampaw remarked.

“I believe Medikal requires serious psychiatric counselling because heartbreak manifests in various ways, and his situation is prompting him to speak out,” he concluded.

Renowned lawyer Maurice Ampaw has advised Ghanaian musician Medikal to seek psychiatric counselling amidst the ongoing marital discord with his wife, actress Fella Makafui.

“We have a matrimonial secret. Whatever happens between spouses, in the event of a divorce, should remain private,” Ampaw asserted.

He highlighted Medikal’s departure from this standard, stating, “So why is Medikal airing his grievances on social media? Medikal, what’s going on?”

Ampaw further expressed disappointment, noting his prior admiration for Medikal but now observing behavior that suggests the rapper is struggling with the situation.

“I used to commend you, but it appears you’re overwhelmed by heartbreak,” Ampaw remarked.
