  • Ghana’s tourism has been boosted by ‘new’ Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park – Akufo-Addo

Ghana’s tourism has been boosted by ‘new’ Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo, in his State of the Nation Address (SONA), declared that the comprehensive rehabilitation of the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park has triggered a notable upswing in tourism, both from within the country and abroad.

Highlighting the surge in visitors post-commissioning, the President disclosed that between July 14 and December 31, 2023, a total of 208,557 individuals, encompassing domestic and international tourists, visited the park.

He underscored that various enhancements were made to other facilities, garnering interest from the private sector for the development of additional tourist sites.

Notably, the national museum gallery, closed since 2015, underwent full refurbishment, attracting over 35,000 visitors in 2023, including school children.

In emphasizing the importance of preserving Ghana’s cultural heritage, President Akufo-Addo announced the construction of the country’s inaugural Kente museum at Bonwire in the Ashanti region.

He said: “Mr Speaker, for the first time since the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park was constructed in 1992, Government has undertaken a full modernisation rehabilitation of the facility. Since the commissioning of the modernised park in July 2023, the number of domestic and international visitors has risen dramatically.

“A national newspaper, reporting on activities at the revamped Park, had a screaming headline which said AKUFO-ADDO RESURRECTS NKRUMAH. That gave me pause for a moment, but, on reflection, I decided I would accept it, be it a compliment, or criticism or an addition to the collection of sayings by our elders. Whichever it is, since the commissioning, there have been two hundred and eight thousand, five hundred and fifty-seven (208,557) domestic and international visitors to the Park between 14th July and 31st December 2023. Mr Speaker, compare that, if you may, with the best performance until then, which was in the Year of Return in 2019, when there were one hundred and twenty-six thousand, one hundred and ninety (126,190) visitors in the year. Other facilities are being upgraded, and it is good to note that the private sector is showing interest, and getting into the development of tourist attraction sites”.

This initiative aims to safeguard and promote Ghana’s rich cultural legacy.

Furthermore, the President assured that preparatory works and construction design for Heroes Park, dedicated to commemorating Ghana’s “big six,” were completed in the previous year, with construction set to commence soon.

President Akufo-Addo reflected on a headline from a national newspaper, stating “AKUFO-ADDO RESURRECTS NKRUMAH,” acknowledging the significant increase in visitors since the park’s modernization. He shared the visitor statistics, comparing them with previous years, noting the remarkable growth in attendance since the park’s commissioning in July 2023.

The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park underwent an extensive Gh¢30 million renovation and modernization, culminating in its commissioning by President Akufo-Addo on July 4th, 2023. Originally established in 1991 and opened in 1992, the park had not undergone any renovations since its inception, leading to considerable deterioration. The refurbishment aimed to restore the park to its former glory and enhance its appeal to tourists, both locally and internationally.

Dr. Awal highlighted a remarkable surge in revenue generated by the national museum. Previously, the museum brought in GH¢25,000 per month, but after its rehabilitation, it now generates GH¢350,000. Additionally, the facility has employed 15 more workers.

  • Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park was closed to devise ticketing strategy – Ghana Tourism Authority

Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park was closed to devise ticketing strategy – Ghana Tourism Authority

The Deputy Head of Corporate Affairs of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Kofi Atta Kakra Kusi, has explained that the temporary closure of the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park was necessary to devise an electronic and digital ticketing strategy.

Speaking to the media, he stated that the park was open and free to all citizens to encourage domestic tourism as part of the “Experience Ghana, Share Ghana” initiative.

“When it was opened, it was opened for the general public. We are trying to promote domestic tourism. It’s called ‘Experience Ghana, Share Ghana’. Why would you open something and quickly close it? When it was opened, we gave 1 week, wanting Ghanaians to come there free of charge. So for about 5 days, anyone could pass through because we wanted Ghanaians to have a feel. They weren’t paying a dime when it was opened,” he stated.

However, due to a significant influx of visitors when it was opened, they decided to temporarily close the park to make necessary adjustments and improvements to handle the high number of tourists efficiently.

“Now the closure was for us to strategize on the ticketing. The ticketing is electronic; digital,” he said.

The park was recently redeveloped and commissioned on July 4, 2023, by President Akufo-Addo, but had to be temporarily closed on July 7 to fine-tune the ticketing system.

  • Anyidoho applauds President Akufo-Addo for revitalising Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park

Anyidoho applauds President Akufo-Addo for revitalising Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park

Founder of Atta Mills Institute, Koku Anyidoho, has extended appreciation to President Nana Akufo-Addo and his administration for the revitalization of Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park.

Following his tour of the park, Mr Anyidoho expressed his deep satisfaction, stating, “I must say, I am thoroughly impressed.”

“After 25 years of existence of the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, the facility had not seen any meaningful facelift, at which point the fountains, which are major attractions, were not functioning well thus affecting visitations.

Moreover, the roof of the museum leaked each time it rained making it difficult to conduct visitors around. The situation was not different at the VIP lounge, where most VIP guests of the State signed the visitor’s books after their tour.

Additionally, the main corridor to the washrooms and some parts of the washrooms were in a deplorable state.

Mr Anyidoho in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) noted that when he was championing the reconstruction of the Asomdwe Park, Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum was not something to write home about, adding that “one of the energy I got for the reconstruction of the Asomdwe Park was that I was seeing the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum just deteriorate.”

He said it was a good start in terms of honouring and remembering our heroes, saying there was a lot that had been done and a lot could also be done.

“I have been here for an hour and after touring the place, I can say that we can all remember Dr Kwame Nkrumah in this exciting manner,” he added.

Talking about the maintenance of the facility, Mr Anyidoho appealed to the public to make good use of the Park and maintain it for the next generation “to come and see the legacies, achievements and the life of the first President of Ghana.”

He congratulated President Akufo-Addo and his administration for the redevelopment of the park, saying that it would not only honour Dr Kwame Nkrumah but would also promote domestic tourism.

“Look at the reconstruction of the Atta Mills Presidential Library at Cape Coast and now the new Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, this will be one of the legacies of the current government in protecting the legacies of former presidents,” he added.

Price list: What you need to pay to experience the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park

If you are looking for a place to learn about Ghana’s history and culture, you might want to check out the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park in Accra.

The park, which was recently revamped and modernised by President Akufo-Addo, is a tribute to Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, who led the country to independence in 1957.

The park was originally built in 1990 by the late Jerry John Rawlings and opened to the public in 1992.

It occupies the former British colonial Polo Grounds, where Dr Nkrumah famously declared Ghana’s independence. It also serves as the final resting place for him and his wife, Fathia Nkrumah.

However, the park had not undergone any significant renovation in its 25-year existence. It suffered from various issues such as malfunctioning fountains, leaky roofs in the museum, and deteriorating facilities.

That’s why, in 2018, President Akufo-Addo secured a $40 million loan facility from the World Bank through the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture to enhance the tourism sector and address its constraints.

Part of this loan was used to rehabilitate and redevelop the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and Mausoleum.

The project, which cost about $3.5 million, started on July 19, 2022 and was completed in March 2023. It was officially commissioned by President Akufo-Addo on July 4, 2023 and opened to the public on July 11, 2023.

The revamped Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park now boasts of new and improved features such as:

    • A presidential library with books, documents and artefacts related to Dr Nkrumah’s life and legacy
    • An audio-visual fountain that incorporates captivating visuals and synchronised music
    • An upgraded road and drainage network
    • A new restaurant
    • A VVIP lounge
    • An artistic freedom wall
    • A music and light fountain to boost night tourism

The park has also been commercialised to generate revenue for its maintenance and operation. The park charges different fees for visitors depending on their nationality and age. Here are the prices for touring the park:

    • Ghanaians
    • Children: GHS5
    • Junior High School and Senior High School students: GHS10
    • Tertiary students: GHS15
    • Adults: GHS25
    • Non-Ghanaians
    • Children: GHS30
    • Tertiary students: GHS60
    • Adults: GHS100

The park is open to the public from Monday to Sunday from 8:30am to 11pm.

The park can also be leased for events such as weddings, parties, concerts and conferences. The fees for holding an event at the park are:

    • During the day (for the first two hours): GHS2000
    • During the night (for the first two hours): GHS3000

According to Edward Quao, the Acting Director of the Park, the fees are necessary to enable the smooth running of the edifice. He also said that he was satisfied with the patronage of the park so far.

President Akufo-Addo said that the renovated and modernised park befits the status of Dr Nkrumah as an outstanding pan-Africanist and a champion of Africa’s liberation from colonialism and imperialism. He also said that the park would help attract more tourists to Ghana and boost the country’s economy.

He urged the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture and the Ghana Tourism Authority to leverage on the Year of Return, Beyond the Return and Destination Ghana initiatives that he launched to position Ghana as a destination of choice.

He also said that his government aims to increase tourism’s contribution to GDP from five percent to 10 percent, as well as attract five million tourists by 2024.

The closure, effective from midnight on Friday, July 7, 2023, will extend until Tuesday, July 11, 2023.

  • Architect shares inspiration behind Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park refurbishment

Architect shares inspiration behind Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park refurbishment

The 29-year-old architect, Bethel Kofi Mamphey, responsible for the revitalized Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, has shared insights into the inspiration behind the renewed appearance and ambiance of the monument dedicated to Ghana’s first president.

He expressed that his main inspiration was to create an engaging experience for young individuals, enabling them to comprehend and appreciate the achievements of Ghana’s former President.

The park, initially designed by Dr. Don Arthur in 1991, houses the remains of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and his wife, Fathia Nkrumah.

It is situated on the former polo grounds in Accra, where Ghana’s independence was declared.

In 2022, the facility underwent closure for renovation, resulting in the integration of new elements at a cost of $3.5 million.

The refurbished Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park showcases various enhancements, including a reception hall, administrative spaces, spacious restroom facilities, a restaurant, a gift shop, and a library. These additions contribute to its appeal and overall attractiveness.

Additionally, notable features of the renovated Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park include an audiovisual hall, a tunnel adorned with inscribed speeches of Dr. Nkrumah, and a Freedom Wall. The water fountain has also been enhanced with the incorporation of audiovisual elements, adding to the overall experience and ambiance of the park.

During an interview with Bernard Avle on the Point of View on Citi TV, the 29-year-old architect emphasized that the creation of the Freedom Wall, featuring quotes and pictures portraying the diverse emotional states of Ghana’s first President, aimed to offer park visitors an authentic understanding of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s persona.

“Most of us millennials, have heard of Nkrumah, but we didn’t see him, so coming up with the project, I wanted to create something that will allow people to experience parts of him that people have never seen– the emotional phases he went through as a President. The Freedom Wall is to give visitors a feel of Dr. Nkrumah,” he said.

Touching on some of the facilities, Mamphey said “We left the old mausoleum as it is. It is a very beautiful structure. It was made with marble stones which is an everlasting material. We just restored the dilapidated state of some of its structures including the broken concrete fence. That is where his remains are. The land is the same. The difference is that the lawns and the trees have been well-manicured, so now you can see everything at a distance”.

Mr. Mamphey further revealed that the entire refurbishment project employed Ghanaian labor, a feat that he believes would make the former President proud as it aligns with his principles.

“Everybody on the project, from the engineers to the welders were all Ghanaians. This is fully Ghanaian. There were no ex-pats”

On Tuesday, 4th July 2023, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo officially inaugurated the revitalized Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park.

The President expressed his belief that the refurbished park will draw approximately one million domestic and international tourists each year.

During the unveiling ceremony of the redeveloped memorial park, President Akufo-Addo emphasized that the government is committed to ongoing investments in the tourism sector as a means to revive the economy.

  • Nkrumah Memorial Park a place for all – Acting Director

Nkrumah Memorial Park a place for all – Acting Director

The acting director of the recently renovated Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, Edward Quao, has praised the establishment as unique with a range of items for tourists to enjoy visiting.

He listed the many features the building can brag of, including a freedom hall, a picnic place for families, and an amphitheater for public events.

An array of Ghanaians applauded the $3.5 million makeover, which they saw as a suitable tribute to the country’s first president, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

Given that the new structure appears larger, some onlookers believe that the park has been extended.

“We also have a freedom hall where we have images of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah in a decent mood when he was smiling, a musical fountain-the first of its kind in Ghana, whereby each chime is structured into the system, a flow of the fountain, according to the rhythm being played. We also have a new well-made picnic area for our guests. It’s a new place, very exciting”.

He said that during the two years of rehabilitation, no new land parcel was developed.

“We didn’t expand the place, it’s the same area we had. We didn’t encroach on any land. What we had was what we improved on. It’s the same old land we had the new facility you have now. Nothing in terms of space has changed”.

Edward Quao discussed several initiatives put in place to increase park visitors.

“With local market, our target mostly is the schools, so we have a team that is going to work around the schools to promote the Park. And also use our social media handles a lot because we have a lot of youth who go on social media. And online ticketing was established for our foreigners.”

“And we will collaborate more with event organizers. We have an additional gallery where you can watch his videos and listen to his audio, and his famous and favourite quotes. Pictures can also be taken at the rooftop of the Park,” Edward Quao, the Acting Director of the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park explained.

  • Tourism Ministry charged to leverage revamped Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park to attract 1million tourists annually

Tourism Ministry charged to leverage revamped Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park to attract 1million tourists annually

President Akufo-Addo has tasked the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture to ensure the country brings in one million tourists annually just to tour the newly revamped Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park.

The President commissioned the renovated park on Tuesday, July 4, hence making it accessible to the public.

In his address to the gathering, the President noted that prior to its renovation, the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park brought in about 90,000 tourists yearly, thus an upgrade should lead to an increase in the number of tourists.

“Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park which attracted some 90,000 annually before the renovation, is now expected to attract over one million tourists annually. I’m charging the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, and its agencies to devise effective marketing and promotional strategies, to achieve the target of 1 million domestic and international tourist visitations to the Park”.

The park which is located on the coast of Accra was built by the late Jerry John Rawlings in the year 1990 in honour of Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first President. It was subsequently opened to the public in 1992.

Since its construction, the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park had not seen any revamp. On 19th July 2022, the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Dr. Ibrahim Mohammed Awal, cut sod for the commencement of the rehabilitation and redevelopment of the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and Mausoleum.

This was after the government in 2018 secured a US$40 million loan facility from the World Bank through the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture to strengthen the tourism environment.

Now in its upgraded state, the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park houses a presidential library, an audio-visual Fountain which incorporates captivating visuals and synchronized music, an upgraded road and drainage Network among others.

On their part, the family of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah expressed appreciation to government for the redevelopment of the Memorial Park.

Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo has revealed that government is on a quest to make Ghana the hub of tourism in West Africa and as such is committed to building museums and other tourist attractions in various parts of the country.

As part of this initiative, government is set to construct a museum dedicated to Asante warrior and Queen Mother of Ejisu, Yaa Asantewaa, and the big six, among others.

“Construction of museums and heroes park for the big six, a memorial park in Cape Coast for the Aborigines, a memorial enclave in Tamale for the founders of the erstwhile Northern People’s Party to symbolise their participation in the drive for national independence and the completion of the ongoing works at the Bonwire museum and Yaa Asantewaa museum, both in Ejisu are in the offing,” President Akufo-Addo said.

Tourism forms parts of ways to grow an economy and in Ghana, the sector stands as the  third largest contributor to the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The tourism sector in 2021 generated a revenue of $2.1 billion and contributed about $2.3 billion in the subsequent year.

The government plans to rake in $4 billion from the tourism sector by 2024.

Recognizing tourism’s importance for national development, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo designated it a key factor for social advancement. In 2018, he secured a $40 million loan from the World Bank to improve the tourism environment and develop sites and destinations.

With the recent renovations, the park is set to provide an enhanced and more memorable experience for tourists and history enthusiasts worldwide.

In July 2022, the Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture initiated a $3.5 million rehabilitation and redevelopment project for the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park. The aim was to preserve its historical value, increase visitor capacity, and improve service delivery.
