GFA President Kurt Okraku meets Israeli Ambassador hold talks on strengthening football ties

President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, recently met with the Israeli Ambassador to Ghana, Roey Gilad, to discuss ways to strengthen football cooperation between the two countries.

The meeting, held at the Israeli Embassy in Accra on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, focused on deepening ties through various football initiatives.

Ghana and Israel already share a strong football connection, with many Ghanaian male and female players competing in Israeli clubs. The bond was further strengthened when Israeli coach Avram Grant led the Black Stars from 2015 to 2017, taking them to the final of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations. Another Israeli, Eyal Lachman, also coached Ghanaian club Hearts of Oak.

During the meeting, both parties explored ideas for cultural and sporting events to celebrate their shared football history. They also discussed technical exchange programs to enhance the skills of Ghanaian coaches, medical staff, and marketing professionals by tapping into Israel’s expertise in sports science and football technology.

The meeting also included discussions about Ghana’s U-15 national team taking part in a tournament in Israel. This opportunity would give young players valuable international experience and help them develop their skills.

Additionally, the GFA is looking to partner with Israeli businesses in Ghana to support football development, including improving infrastructure and grassroots programs.

A key focus of the discussions was coaching exchange programs. Ghanaian coaches would travel to Israel to learn about modern football technology, while Israeli experts would visit Ghana to share their knowledge.

There were also plans to bring specialists to train local pitch managers, ensuring better playing conditions in the country.

GFA President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku expressed confidence that this collaboration would greatly benefit Ghanaian football.

“This engagement with the Israeli Ambassador and his team is a great step towards strengthening our football ecosystem. By leveraging Israel’s expertise in sports science and technology, we can create more opportunities for Ghanaian footballers, coaches, and administrators.”

The GFA is dedicated to building strong international partnerships to improve football in Ghana. It will continue working with key stakeholders to put these plans into action in the coming months.

Also present at the meeting were Michael Osekre, Chief of Staff to the GFA President, and Janice Odonkor, Head of Business Development at the GFA.

George Afriyie vows to petition govt if Kurt Okraku seek a third term in office

Former GFA Vice-President George Afriyie has expressed his determination to seek government intervention if Kurt Okraku attempts to serve a third term as GFA President.

Reports suggest that the Executive Council of the GFA is considering revising its statutes to permit Okraku’s re-election for another term.

In response to reports of Okraku potentially seeking another term, Afriyie made it clear that he would take action.

Speaking on Asempa FM, he stated, “You’ve won, you are ruling, you are the President of the FA, things are not going on well, that is not my fault.

Afriyie went on to express his desire to see Okraku succeed, stating, “I really want to help him [Kurt] succeed. I am more than prepared for him to finish his term but he should forget about the proposed amendments of our statutes to go [for] a third term.

“The biggest spender of the GFA is the government of Ghana. I will personally write a petition to the government of Ghana. The government has a say,” he added.

Kurt Okraku became GFA President in 2019, following the dissolution of the Normalisation Committee, which was established after Kwesi Nyantakyi resigned amid corruption allegations exposed by Anas Aremeyaw Anas.

Okraku’s leadership has drawn criticism, particularly over the poor performance of Ghana’s national teams.

The Black Stars exited at the group stage in the last two Africa Cup of Nations and failed to qualify for the upcoming tournament in Morocco—marking the first time in 20 years that Ghana won’t compete in the event.

This is how Black Stars physiotherapist was demoted to a lower-tier national team without a reason

Former physiotherapist for the Black Stars, Professor Jonathan Quartey, has revealed how Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku transferred to a lower-tier national team.

According to him, the technical team was disbanded and replaced with a new lineup. following the Black Stars’ lacklustre run at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Speaking in an interview with JoyNews, the University of Ghana lecturer revealed that he was informed about his transfer to the local Black Stars upon the directive of Kurt Okraku. However, he noted that no explanation was provided for the decision.

“I think shortly after the AFCON [in Ivory Coast], the technical team was dissolved. If you all remember, the entire technical team was dissolved, so when it was reconstituted, I was not included in the current technical team. I’m told that the president has asked that I should be reassigned.

“The president of GFA said I should be reassigned to the local Black Stars. So, as we speak, I’m supposed to be with the local Black Stars. I don’t know; maybe there was a reshuffle. I don’t know, but I got a call from the GFA that the president said I should be reassigned to the local Black Stars.

“They wanted me to know because the list was going to be made available within that period, so I was called and informed. So if I had all the reasons before me, I would make them known to you, to be very honest, but I don’t.”

Prof. Quartey further indicated that he was disappointed with the decision because the team did not suffer severe injuries, but the minor knocks were treated during the 2023 AFCON.

“There were some knocks, aches, and pains that came as a result of being in camp, and these were well treated by the medical team, including me,” he added.

This isn’t what we bargained for; my heart bleeds – GFA boss Kurt Okraku on Black Stars’ AFCON qualifier failure

Ghana Football Association (GFA) President, Kurt Okraku, has voiced his profound disappointment following the Black Stars’ failure to secure a spot in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The national team’s elimination, finishing last in Group F with only three points from six games, represents a major setback.

In a Facebook post, Okraku reflected on the stark contrast between the team’s recent achievements and their current struggles, expressing concern over the unexpected turn of events.

“From the highest heights of world football on the 29th of March 2022 to the lowest ebb of AFCON qualifying matches. My heart bleeds,” Okraku began, referring to Ghana’s qualification for the 2022 FIFA World Cup as a moment of pride, now overshadowed by their inability to secure a spot in AFCON 2025.

He acknowledged the disappointment felt by fans and stakeholders, recognising that the team’s current performance falls far short of expectations.

“Definitely, this is not what we want or what we bargained for,” he wrote. “At this point, only cool heads can win, and we as leaders of our sport will stay together, be honest with ourselves, and fix this problem.”

Okraku described the road to recovery as a challenging one but expressed optimism for the future.

“The road to full recovery after normalisation is definitely bumpy and rough, but our collective efforts and patience will win, and Ghana, our beloved country, will win,” he said.

As both a fan and leader, Okraku empathised with the nation’s frustration.

“As a Black Stars fan and as the leader, I share in your pain and in our pain,” he wrote, reiterating his commitment to guiding the team through this difficult period.

A video of Ghana Football Association (GFA) President, Kurt Okraku, speaking to the Black Stars players before their match against Sudan has triggered reactions from netizens, including gospel singer and preacher Rev. Sonnie Badu.

Rev. Badu expressed his views on Okraku’s comments, describing the president’s outburst as “demoralising” for the players.

“With all due respect, I think Kurt’s outburst rather deflated the boys. Yes, I understand he is frustrated and wants the nation to see that he is in control.

However, football is a psychological game, and this could damage the boys rather than provide the intended motivation,” he said.

Sonnie Badu emphasised that the Black Stars need former captain Dede Ayew, believing his presence would help unite the team better.

“This is why Dede Ayew is still needed; he does well in motivating the boys, or a successful ex-player could be helpful.

If I were Kurt, all I would say is, ‘Hey guys, Kwesi APPIAH is an ex-player and ex-coach, and so a game like this has a lot of mixed emotions,” he stated.

He stated that the Jama sessions were an excellent form of bonding, questioning who currently leads those sessions now that Dede and Ofori are absent.

    Background

Ghana is set to play Sudan on Thursday, October 10, 2024, at the Accra Sports Stadium.

You’ll never be selected if you don’t decide to die for Ghana – Kurt Okraku to Black Stars players

President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, has issued a strong warning to the Black Stars players, stressing that their lack of commitment in recent matches will not be tolerated.

Mr Okraku expressed his frustration following the team’s underwhelming performance in their opening games of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, which included a defeat to Angola and a 1-1 draw with Niger during the September international break.

With just one point from two games, Ghana currently sits third in Group F, prompting widespread criticism from fans and stakeholders alike. The team has since regrouped for a crucial doubleheader against Sudan, as they aim to get their AFCON campaign back on track.

During a visit to the Black Stars camp on Tuesday, October 8, Okraku delivered a passionate address, urging the players to show more commitment and avoid repeating the mistakes of their earlier games.

“The minimum I expect, the minimum Ghana expects, is a team of men who will show passion and desire to play for our country. Not when you are dribbled, and you’re seen walking on the pitch while the ball heads toward your net. That is impossible. I told the coach this,” Okraku stated.

He further warned the players, saying, “It’s either you guys decide to die for Ghana or decide you will not. If you don’t, you’ll never be selected.”

Okraku emphasized that wearing the national team jersey should instill pride and a determination to fight for victory, adding, “Once you depart your various places and come here and put on the shirt, naturally, that should give you the pride to fight, to show passion, to show aggression, and to show desire to win.”

The Black Stars will face Sudan on matchday three of the AFCON qualifiers at the Accra Sports Stadium on Thursday, October 10, before traveling to Libya for the return fixture on October 15.

Govt doesn’t support GFA financially – Kurt Okraku

President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku has dismissed accusations suggesting that the government funds the FA.

Such claims frequently emerge during times of poor performance by the national teams, with critics alleging mismanagement of public money by the FA.

In recent times, the FA has faced scrutiny for allegedly exaggerating budget estimates for tournaments to benefit personally.

However, at a hearing before the Parliamentary Select Committee on Monday, Okraku emphasised that the GFA does not manage the finances associated with the national teams.

“For the record, the government of Ghana doesn’t give GFA any money. The Ministry of Youth and Sports funds national team-related activities. No money comes into the GFA’s coffers from the government,” Okraku said.

He explained that the Sports Ministry handles all financial aspects, including budgets and payments for tournaments and qualifiers. An accountant from the Ministry oversees these costs, with the GFA having no involvement.

“Monies used for national teams are paid to the Ministry of Youth and Sports. They make all statutory payments. No cedi comes to the FA,” Okraku added.

Okraku’s testimony before the Parliamentary Select Committee came in response to a petition from the Save Ghana Football group, which organized a protest after the Black Stars’ disappointing performance in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The group raised several issues, including demands for transparency regarding the funds allocated from the 2022 World Cup and the 2023 AFCON.

They also expressed concerns over the current funding strategy, claiming that an excessive amount of taxpayer money is directed towards the Black Stars, often neglecting other national teams.

The group proposed that the GFA collaborate with the National Sports Authority on financial planning, as the NSA holds legal responsibility for these matters.

I warned Kurt Okraku, I warned him – Augustine Arhinful recounts

Former Black Stars legend Augustine Arhinful has disclosed that he once cautioned Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Simon Okraku about the people in his circle.

Arhinful recounted that Okraku was pushing for a policy to decentralize the GFA’s status committee, a move he vehemently opposed due to various practical challenges.

Arhinful shared that during a briefing, he advised Okraku to drop the decentralization plans, drawing from his own experiences on similar committees.

However, Okraku did not appreciate this advice.

In an interview with Dan Kwaku Yeboah, Arhinful revealed that this disagreement prompted him to write a letter to Okraku, warning him to be wary of those around him.

“I attended Kurt’s meeting because I had heard that he wanted to decentralise the status committee, but I knew it wasn’t feasible unless certain changes were made.

During the question session, I suggested that his plan to decentralize the status committee should be reconsidered because it wasn’t possible. I have been part of two status committees in Europe, one in Italy and the other in Turkey.

“He wasn’t happy with my suggestion and even told someone that I was trying to undermine him. After five years, has he done it? No… I wrote a personal letter warning him to be careful with the people around him because I realized they only tell him the positives.

I sent it to his office at Asylum Down, but I don’t know if he received and read it,” Arhinful said in a n interview.

Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kwesi Nyantakyi has thrown his support behind the current leader, Kurt Okraku, expressing confidence in his abilities given the necessary backing from stakeholders.

Nyantakyi emphasised Okraku’s potential to elevate Ghana’s football status, underscoring the importance of unified support for the GFA president.

Speaking to 3Sports, Nyantakyi emphasised the need for collective assistance for Okraku, urging post-election unity to ensure support for the elected candidate.

“Oh, I think that he is capable. He just needs help. Everybody should help him. One thing I advise is that when it’s election time, people come with different tasks and have different candidates but let’s rally around whoever the majority elects and provide the needed support so that we can achieve the common objective,” he stated

“The common objective is to find national teams succeeding. Our football grassroots. For men’s and women’s football, everything going well. So let’s give him the support and I have no doubt that if we give him the support he will succeed”, he added.

I can’t take insults from people I can feed – Dreams FC coach on why he snubbed Black Stars coaching job

Head coach of Dreams FC, Abdul Karim Zito, has disclosed that he refrained from applying for the vacant Ghana coaching position due to his aversion to social media insults, especially from individuals he supports.

He expressed his belief that applying for the coaching role under Kurt Okraku’s presidency at the Ghana Football Association would expose him to negative comments from critics.

“If I had applied, people would say it was because Kurt Okraku is the GFA President; that is why I applied. So I decided not to apply at all,” he told Asempa FM, as monitored by footballghana.com.

“If you look at it, it’s like anything coming from Kurt; that thing is not good. Some people will go to social media; people that you can even take care of will talk trash about you and I don’t like that.”

Following the dismissal of Chris Hughton due to Ghana’s disappointing performance at the 2023 AFCON, the Ghana Football Association opened applications for interested coaches.

By the deadline, over 600 coaches had submitted their applications.

Despite the three-week period given to the search committee, no announcement has been made regarding the appointment of a new coach.

Learn to end the insults of the players – Kurt Okraku to Ghanaians on Black Stars

President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, has issued a strong warning, cautioning that players might decline selection for the Black Stars if subjected to severe criticism following subpar performances.

The Black Stars received significant backlash following their disappointing performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire, where they were eliminated in the group stage.

Speaking to the press during the GFA’s meet-the-press event in Kumasi, Okraku urged fans to refrain from verbally abusing players, highlighting the negative impact such behaviour could have on player morale and their willingness to represent the national team.

“If we excessively criticise our players when things go wrong, we risk losing their commitment and dedication. That’s why I’ve consistently emphasised the need for unwavering support for our players, regardless of the circumstances,” Okraku stated.

He emphasised the importance of trusting the technical team to make critical decisions regarding player selection, citing the expertise and judgement of the coaching staff.

Ghana’s disappointing performance at the 2023 AFCON saw them finish third in a group that included Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique.

Despite efforts to turn the tournament around, the Black Stars suffered a 2-1 defeat to Cape Verde and consecutive 2-2 draws against Egypt and Mozambique, resulting in their early elimination.

This marked the second consecutive tournament in which Ghana failed to advance beyond the group stage, extending the nation’s AFCON title drought to 42 years.

Okraku’s plea underscores the necessity of creating a supportive environment to nurture player development and success, urging fans to stand behind the team through both triumphs and challenges.

People from Ghana’s football community and beyond gathered to pay their last respects to the former Black Stars player, standing alongside Dwamena’s grieving family.

Among the attendees were Kurt Okraku, President of the Ghana Football Association, and several other association executives. The solemn occasion was a time for reflection and remembrance of Dwamena’s life and contributions to Ghanaian football.

During the ceremony, Raphael’s widow delivered a touching tribute, describing him as her confidant and light. She expressed comfort in the cherished memories they shared.

“Rapha, your name still echoes in my heart with warmth and melody. Reflecting on our shared years of bliss, I find solace in precious memories of the laughter, wisdom and the love that defined us. You were more than a husband. You were my confidante, guide and the source of irreplaceable love,” she said.

In a separate development, Raphael’s sister, Yvonne Dwamena, announced a second funeral date on Onua TV during an interview with Captain Smart. She explained that the family would hold a separate funeral service on Saturday, distinct from the one organized by the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

This decision arose from a dispute between the wife and the deceased’s family over the provision of a shroud for the corpse. The family objected to the wife and her family’s involvement in providing the shroud, leading to the decision to hold a separate funeral service.

His remark forms part of reasons why the football community staged a protest on February 14, 2024, under the banner of “#Save Ghana Football,” calling for the GFA president’s resignation and the disbandment of the executive committee.

“Ther is something we call conflict of interest. Kurt Okraku and all the EXCOM members have football teams. That tells you that from where they sit they are serving their own interest. During an appearance as a guest on Metro TV’s One On One talk show, hosted by Bridget Otoo, Adams clarified that he was indeed offered a position within Kurt’s administration, which he chose not to accept.

“He called me and said that he wanted to offer me a Deputy Communications Director job. My brother Henry was there, and I said, Okay, I am thinking about it.

“But I thought that I wasn’t psychologically ready because it was just at the end of Nyantakyi’s era and also at the end of the Normalisation Committee, which I criticised… So, psychologically, I thought I needed a gap,” he narrated.

Despite being a vocal critic of the administration, Saddick Adams, who has garnered a reputation as a fierce critic, stated that he maintains a fraternal bond with Kurt Okraku, the president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

“Kurt Okraku is like my brother. I am not sure any football person has ever stayed with me late in the night and left my house around 2 a.m. He stayed with me long before he became the GFA president. I used to go to his office at least once a month,” he stated.

This declaration came during a press briefing in Kumasi, where Okraku addressed the nation’s dissatisfaction with Ghana’s performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire.

As GFA President for over four years, Okraku is spearheading the search for the team’s fifth head coach.

“When we find the new set of trainers, it is our collective decision to stay with them for the long haul and all our national teams,” he stated.

Following Ghana’s disappointing exit from the tournament, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) decided to part ways with Chris Hughton and his coaching staff, signalling the start of the search for a new coach.

To streamline the process, the GFA formed a five-member search committee assigned to identify the new coach within a three-week period.

The committee reportedly received over 600 applications for the position.

Ghana’s premature exit from the tournament occurred after the team finished third in a group that included Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique.

GFA did not interfere in Hughton, Otto Addo’s work – Kurt Okraku on fallout of coaches

President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, has refuted allegations suggesting his involvement in player selections and call-ups during Chris Hughton’s tenure as head coach of the Black Stars.

In recent times, Okraku has faced significant scrutiny, with accusations pointing to his alleged interference in the decision-making process regarding player selections for the national team. Similar claims emerged during the terms of previous head coaches, Charles Kwablan Akonnor and Otto Addo.

However, Okraku has vehemently dismissed these accusations, asserting that he had no hand in player selections or call-ups during the respective tenures of the coaches mentioned.

“I didn’t interfere in the job of Charles Akonnor. Neither did I interfere in the job of Otto Addo… and neither did I interfere in the job of Mr. Chris Hughton,” he said during the GFA’s meeting with the press in Kumasi on Wednesday, February 7.

“They were our coaches and any other coach who will be hired by the Football Association will be given the freedom as always to deliver.”

Following Ghana’s exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where they finished third in Group B with only two points from three games, Chris Hughton was relieved of his duties as head coach.

Prosper Harrison Addo, the General Secretary of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), addressed concerns regarding the association’s interaction with the media during tournaments, clarifying that certain restrictions are imposed to adhere to tournament regulations and avoid potential fines.

Speaking at a press conference held in Kumasi, Addo refuted claims suggesting that the GFA has been uncooperative or unfriendly towards the media since its inception.

He emphasised that under the leadership of Kurt Okraku, the GFA has maintained a positive and collaborative relationship with media outlets.

Addo highlighted that the current administration, led by Kurt Okraku, has actively engaged with the media and welcomed their input, noting that several media professionals serve on the GFA’s Executive Council—an unprecedented move aimed at fostering transparency and inclusivity within the association.

“This FA has been more media-friendly than ever! Myself, the President, and more media persons serve on the exco than ever; they are all media persons,” he said.

“If you look at the work we do with the GPL, WGPL, and all our products, we have engaged the media a lot, and a lot more are working closely with the FA. The concept of media officers is all part of the cohesion between the FA and the media.”

Addressing claims that the FA restricts the media from having access to the team, he said the GFA’s actions are not deliberate and that they are only to enforce the laws of tournaments.

“Now to zero in on the Black Stars, when we go to tournaments, there are rules. Take the World Cup for instance. There are rules and if they’re broken, we pay dearly for them.

“This GFA is media friendly and our door is always open to engage the media. We have to organise it within the confines of the competition rules. Also and more importantly, the FA would have to create an environment conducive for coaches and players to thrive at tournaments.”

“I don’t hate anyone!” – Kurt Okraku refutes tension between Chris Hughton

Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku has vehemently refuted rumors suggesting that he harbored animosity towards former Black Stars coach Chris Hughton.

Mr Okraku clarified that his primary focus is the success of the team, and he does not harbor personal biases or preferences when it comes to selecting coaches.

“I don’t hate anyone! I want to be successful. I demand performance from coaches, I want to see a team perform well and win games. This is what I demand from every coach that works for us!” Mr Okraku emphasised this at a press conference in Kumasi.

After Ghana’s disappointing performance at the AFCON 2023 tournament in Ivory Coast, Hughton was relieved of his duties as coach.

The team’s inability to secure any wins resulted in their early elimination from the competition.

During Hughton’s tenure, Ghana’s performance left much to be desired, with only four wins, four draws, and five losses recorded.

With a win-loss-draw ratio of 30.77%, 30.77%, and 38.46%, respectively, the team struggled to maintain consistency on the field.

In the wake of Hughton’s departure, the GFA has initiated a search for a new coach, receiving an overwhelming response of over 600 applicants.

Despite rumors of personal disagreements, GFA President Okraku has refuted any animosity towards Hughton, indicating that the decision to part ways was solely based on the team’s underwhelming performance.

Moving forward, Okraku is dedicated to finding a capable replacement who can guide the team to success.

Don’t let it ever happen again – GFA president ‘warns’ journalists after booing Black Stars following AFCON exit

Ghana Football Association (GFA) president Kurt Okraku criticised sports journalists for jeering at the Black Stars players following their elimination from the 2023 African Cup of Nations tournament in Ivory Coast.

Several journalists were seen booing the Black Stars after their disappointing group-stage exit from the 2023 AFCON.

The Black Stars squandered a two-goal lead and settled for a 2-2 draw against Mozambique.

Addressing the press during the GFA’s meeting in Kumasi, Kurt Okraku acknowledged the pain of Ghana’s early exit from the AFCON but emphasised that it was inappropriate for journalists to boo the tea

“I share the pain of every Ghanaian on the back of our poor performance by our Black Stars at the AFCON. I also share in the pain of colleague journalists whose lifespan was cut short due to our early exit. But I do not share in the act of booing our players,” Kurt Okraku said at Meet the Press in Kumasi.

He clarified that CAF has initiated an investigation to penalise the GFA for the journalists‘ insubordination and emphasised the importance of preventing such actions from reoccurring in the future.

“As journalists, we have been trained to support and report on our national team. I pray and hope that this singular act will never be repeated.

“That act has now activated CAF to find ways of imposing fines on Ghana. It was a bad one!! And like I said here, the period between our exit and now has seen a lot of sober reflection. If we behave well, we know! If we don’t behave better, we know!! Don’t let us put Ghana in a bad light.”

Prince Tagoe blames Joseph Paintsil’s substitution on Okraku-Wilfred Palmer’s strained relationship

Former Ghanaian footballer Prince Tagoe has expressed concerns about the strained relationship between President Kurt Okraku and Wilfred Palmer, emphasising that it should not negatively impact Joseph Paintsil.

Tagoe believes that conflicts between the GFA President and certain football administrators are affecting players managed by those administrators.

Using Joseph Paintsil, under the guidance of Osei Kwaku Palmer, as an example, Tagoe points to Paintsil’s frustration, particularly during the Black Stars’ match against Mozambique, where he was substituted despite being a key player.

Tagoe suggests that Paintsil’s discomfort is a result of the ongoing issues between Palmer and Kurt Okraku.

“Those at the FA have decided to make some players feel uncomfortable at the national team just because they have problems with other management members who have players in the team,” he told Asempa FM, as monitored by FootballGhana.com.

“One example I can clearly make is Joseph Paintsil; which intelligent coach will take him off after he won the penalty? Kurt, if you have problems with Palmer, solve your issues and allow the player to play football.”

In their last Group B match, Ghana required a victory against Mozambique. However, they conceded two goals in injury time, leading to a 2-2 draw and their exit from the tournament.

Former Black Stars management committee member Alhaji Grusah asserts that the current poor form of the Black Stars is a consequence of the alleged greediness of Ghana Football Association President Kurt Okraku.

According to Grusah, Okraku has isolated individuals in the football community and has chosen to rely solely on his close associates to manage the association.

Grusah alleges that Kurt terminated the services of the previous Black Stars management committee members without providing them with official dismissal letters.

“They said they had dissolved the national team, and they didn’t give us letters because (sic) they appointed us,” he said in an audio aired on Sompa FM.

While venting his grievances, the King Faisal bankroller said God is serving his punishment on Kurt in the most embarrassing way.

“He claimed he could do it all by himself; it’s God who is punishing him. Where you least expect to be embarrassed that where you get embarrassed for cheating on people. We are supposed to be one family in football but you want to do it alone along with your family…,” he added.

Regarding Ghana’s 1-0 loss to Comoros, Grusah said the loss means the Black Stars will face an uphill task at the soon-to-start 2023 AFCON.

“The youth are hoping the Black Stars will qualify for the World Cup so they can travel and start a new life. We thank God we won 1-0 we won (against Madagascar) in Kumasi. Unfortunately, both of these encounters witnessed lackluster performances by the Black Stars, leaving little room for optimism.

The team suffered a 2-0 defeat to Mexico and a harsh 4-0 loss to the US Men’s national team.

Expressing his concern about the team’s recent uninspiring displays, GFA President Kurt Okraku emphasized his unease. He firmly believes that the national team must overcome these setbacks and strive for improved performances in the future.

“Our Black Stars must rise again but I’m a disturbed servant,” Kurt Okraku said in a post on Facebook.

Ghana next month will commence the qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The Black Stars will take on Madagascar and Comoros.

‘It is his time as FA president’ – Joe Addo responds to Kurt Okraku’s criticism

Former Ghanaian national team player, Joe Addo, has responded to the President of the Ghana Football Association, Kurt Okraku, following Okraku’s criticism of Addo’s comments on former Black Stars coach Otto Addo.

Okraku had labeled Addo’s remarks as negative.

Joe Addo clarified that his intention was not to tarnish the image of the FA but rather to contribute to the improvement of the sport. He emphasized that the timing of these discussions is vital for the game’s development.

In an interview with Dan Kwaku Yeboah TV, the former Hearts of Oak player also recalled that there was a time when Kurt Okraku paid to watch him play, highlighting the cyclical nature of their roles in football.

He said it is time and now it is his time as FA President. For us during our time, he used to pay money to watch us play. I don’t hold any grudges for anything. I’m a senior than him and I won’t have a back and forth confrontation with him.

“There is something on my mind which will be useful to the development of our game and I spilled it out. If maybe I did not say it right, there is a way to respond to it. I don’t disrespect him in anyway”, he told Dan Kwaku Yeboah.

“But for him to go that far and even mention my name in the presence of my colleagues wasn’t the best to have done from him. I have a child who has completed University and this is not the time for me to go to the gutters to exchange words.

“I know Kurt very well and he expected me to call him but it was a TV program and honestly, I said what was right, and not to condemn Otto Addo”, he added.

Addo played for Ghana at the 1996 Summer Olympics for the senior team where he played 44 times for Ghana and scored two goals.

Following Kurt’s successful re-election, former President Kufuor expressed his full confidence in Kurt’s capabilities.

Kurt was re-elected for another four-year term after securing an impressive 97.5% of the votes during the elective congress held in Tamale on Thursday, October 5, 2023.

During a visit to his Peduase residence to extend condolences for the loss of his wife, Theresa Kufuor, the Executive Council, led by President Simeon-Okraku, received commendation from former President Kufuor.

He recognized the dynamic energy that Kurt had infused into Ghanaian football and encouraged him to persist in making positive contributions to the sport during his second term.

The former president stated, “You have done exceedingly well in your first term and I expect you to do more in your second term to elevate the game to a very high standard.”

Kurt Okraku’s re-election came after George Afriyie was disqualified by the elections committee, leaving Kurt to run unopposed.

President of the Ghana Football Association, Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, has committed to involving former GFA Vice President George Afriyie in his renewed administration.

Following his successful re-election, Okraku stressed the significance of inclusivity within the football community as a fundamental factor in its growth and prosperity.

He emphasised the importance of engaging all stakeholders, including George Afriyie.

Okraku further disclosed that he has initiated contact with George Afriyie and has plans to arrange a meeting to discuss ways of persuading him to return to a role within the GFA.

“Two days ago, I had a meeting with my brother, George Afriyie. I have just one message for him: We can only build the Ghanaian game if we stay together.

The football game is a very big one, and everyone, including George, has a role to play,” Kurt Okraku stated.

He added, “I will reach out to George and bring him back home. So, George, wherever you are, we are one.”

Kurt Okraku, the incumbent president, received a resounding 117 votes out of 119 to secure his second term in office.

He initially assumed the role of GFA President in October 2019, defeating George Afriyie.

This followed the resignation of Kwesi Nyantakyi, who had a lengthy tenure marked by allegations of corruption exposed in an investigative exposé by journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas.

  • GFA elections: Kurt Okraku wins a second term

Kurt Okraku has been re-elected as the President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for his second term. The election, which took place on October 5, 2023, at the Global Dream Hotel in Tamale, Northern Region, was a one-sided affair. Okraku secured a resounding victory with an overwhelming 117 YES votes, while only two votes were against him, and one person abstained from voting.

Notably, Okraku faced no opposition in the GFA elections because his competitor, George Afriyie, had been disqualified by both the Elections Committee and the Appeals Committee following a thorough review process.

Kurt Okraku, who previously served as the Chief Executive Officer of Dreams FC, first assumed the presidency on October 25, 2019.

Despite the looming threat of an injunction notice, the GFA executives decided to proceed with the electoral process.

The GFA had originally set its Congress date for September 27, 2023, in Tamale. However, King Faisal filed for an injunction, resulting in the postponement of the assembly to early October.

King Faisal’s argument centred on the notion that a valid Congress cannot proceed to elect the President until new Executive Council (Exco) representatives are properly elected.

The club contended that initiating nominations for the GFA President’s election prior to conducting Exco elections is both inappropriate and unlawful.

Furthermore, King Faisal, based in Kumasi, sought a declaration that any resolutions made by the current Exco regarding the GFA President’s election before the selection of Exco representatives would constitute a breach of trust, confidence, and loyalty.

There are indications from sources within Citi Sports that George Afriyie was discreetly advised to halt his legal actions and instead seek a restraining order against the elections.

However, it remains uncertain whether the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially received the injunction or if George Afriyie’s appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has yielded any results.

According to reports circulating in various media outlets, Amaju Pinnick, the former president of the Nigeria Football Federation, engaged in discussions with George Afriyie and other parties involved, aiming to resolve the dispute.

Pinnick reportedly offered the aggrieved party a position on the Black Stars World Cup qualifiers committee as a potential solution. Nevertheless, this proposal was promptly declined.

  • All you need to know about 2023 Ghana Football Association election

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is gearing up for its Extraordinary Congress, scheduled for October 5th at the Redaach Memorial Hotel in Tamale.

The Congress is slated to kick off at 9 a.m. and will primarily focus on endorsing Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku for a second term as the President of the GFA.

Kurt Okraku, the incumbent GFA President, is running uncontested after the Appeals Committee upheld the disqualification of his sole challenger, George Afriyie. Okraku initially secured the GFA Presidency in October 2019 when he triumphed over George Afriyie.

He took the reins from Kwesi Nyantakyi, whose prolonged tenure was marred by allegations of corruption, brought to light through an investigative exposé by journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas.

The upcoming Congress is not limited to the presidential endorsement; it will also involve the election of executives who will oversee GFA affairs for the next four years.

In addition to the presidential position, delegates will select five representatives for the Ghana Premier League (GPL) and three representatives for the Division One League (DOL) for the Executive Council.

The DOL candidates vying for the positions include Mark Addo, Samuel Addo Anim, Eugene Nobel Nii Amon Noel, Gideon Fosu, and Alexander Ababi.

For the GPL roles, ten candidates are in the running, including Kingsley Osei Bonsu, Nana Sarfo Oduro, Frederick Acheampong, Anthony Kwesi Aubynn, Ransford Anertey Abbey, Onyina Asenso, Edmund Kwabena Ackah, James Kwasi Appiah, Elloeny Amande, and Raphael Yawiah Gyambrah. Dr. Gifty Afia Oware-Mensah is running uncontested for the Women’s Football representative on the Executive Council.

The electoral process will span across ten regions, where regional delegates will elect their respective chairmen. Two chairmen will subsequently join the Executive Council.

Some regions have uncontested chairmanship races, including Greater Accra, Western, Eastern, and Northern regions. Samuel Aboabire, Simon Ehomah, Linford Boadu Asamoah, and Mahamadu Abu-Hassan are among the uncontested candidates.

In the Central region, Robert Otieku Duncan and Abdul Hayye Yartey are competing for the Central FA Chairman role, while the Brong Ahafo FA Chairman position is being contested by Dickson Kyere-Duah, Dr. Charles Osei Antoh, and Meshack Asante Ameyaw.

Salifu Shaibu Zida and Abel Alonort Asoogo are running for the Upper East Region FA Chairman role.

The event in Tamale is expected to host observers from FIFA, including Gelson Fernandes, Director of Member Associations for Africa; Silmara Sousa, FIFA Development Programme Coordinator; and Mr. Ahmed Harraz, FIFA Member Associations Africa representative.

  • GFA Congress postponed as court adjourns case to October 12

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) Congress, originally scheduled for October 5, 2023, has been postponed due to a court-ordered adjournment stemming from the dispute between King Faisal Football Club and the governing body of football in Ghana.

The new date for the court hearing is now set for Thursday, October 12, 2023.

Initially, the GFA had planned to hold its Congress in Tamale on September 27, 2023. However, King Faisal sought an injunction on the process, leading to the rescheduling of the assembly for early October.

King Faisal, a relegated team from the Ghana Premier League, seeks to maintain this restraint until elections for National League club representatives, Regional Football Associations, and related bodies are completed.

Furthermore, King Faisal contends that a valid Congress cannot proceed to elect the President until new representatives for the Executive Council (Exco) are duly elected.

The club also argues that initiating nominations for the GFA President’s election before Exco elections take place is both improper and illegal.

In addition, King Faisal, based in Kumasi, seeks a declaration that any resolutions passed by the current Exco regarding the GFA President’s election before Exco representatives are chosen constitute a breach of trust, confidence, and loyalty.

Following the disqualification of George Afriyie, Kurt Okraku is poised to continue his tenure as the FA President immediately after the Congress. However, the outcome of the elections hinges on the Court’s ruling in this matter.

It’s important to note that George Afriyie has filed a case with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to challenge his disqualification from participating in the GFA presidential elections scheduled for the near future.

  • Ex GFA presidential aspirant accesses Kurt Okraku’s performance

Ex GFA presidential aspirant accesses Kurt Okraku’s performance

In a recent interview, Amanda Clinton, a former presidential aspirant of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), expressed her admiration for the work done by GFA President Kurt Okraku during his first term, characterizing it as a “fairly decent job.”

She commended Okraku for his efforts in reviving Ghana Football, particularly in light of the challenges it had encountered in the past.

While acknowledging Okraku’s performance, Clinton also raised concerns about his apparent reluctance to engage with challengers in the upcoming election.

Notably, George Afriyie, the sole challenger, had been disqualified, and his appeal was subsequently rejected. This has raised questions about the democratic process within the GFA.

“Optics-wise, it’s going to look really bad because he is the incumbent. He’s done a fairly decent job because of COVID. So to sit there as a de facto dictator-like figure when last four years we had, I think, six contenders, does not show anything of clearing the rot per se,” Clinton stated.

Expanding on her point, Amanda Clinton emphasised that, from an optics perspective, the current GFA President’s decision to avoid facing challengers in the upcoming election could be seen as the least favourable option.

This decision might suggest a sense of apprehension or unease, albeit for unspecified reasons.

It’s worth noting that Kurt Okraku, who secured victory in the 2019 elections, is approaching the end of his tenure, with the election slated for October 5th of the same year.

  • Kurt Okraku can’t run unopposed, it’s not fair – Countryman Songo

Kurt Okraku can’t run unopposed, it’s not fair – Countryman Songo

Controversial sports journalist Patrick Osei Agyemang, also known as Countryman Songo, is advocating for the reinstatement of George Afriyie to the Ghana Football Association’s Presidential Elections.

Afriyie, who aspired to become GFA President, was disqualified from the elections due to his failure to meet the required nomination criteria set by the GFA elections’ vetting committee.

Despite appealing his disqualification to the Appeals Committee in hopes of reversing the decision, Afriyie’s appeal was ultimately rejected.

As a result, with the current GFA president, Kurt Okraku, poised to run uncontested, Countryman Songo is calling on the vetting committee to reconsider their decision and allow George Afriyie to participate in the electoral competition.

Songo stated, “How can the GFA president run unopposed? It’s not fair; there should be competition. Competition is vital in situations like this. No one should bypass the electoral process while others face injustice. We want Ghana football to thrive.”

He pointed out that in the run-up to the 2016 General Election, Paa Kwesi Nduom, the former PPP flagbearer, encountered a comparable disqualification by the Electoral Commission.

Nevertheless, the courts sided with him, permitting him to rectify mistakes in his nomination documents and participate in the elections.

“Even during the general elections, Paa Kwesi Nduom was disqualified, and he took the matter to the appeals committee. The court ruled that he should be allowed to contest because if there is an error in his application forms, he needs more time to correct them. So why disqualify George Afriyie?” Songo questioned.

Meanwhile, George Afriyie is reportedly planning to take the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
