Desist from violence – Hearts of Oak to fans over violent threats to head coach

In response to the team’s dismal run, Accra Hearts of Oak have pleaded with their supporters to abstain from any acts of violence directed at Slavko Matic, their manager.

The club noted that it had observed comments made in the media to incite the supporters against the manager in a statement issued on March 3, 2023.

Heart of Oak begged the supporters to keep their composure and take their complaints to the management for resolution.

“The management of Accra Hearts of Oak Sporting Club PLC has taken notice of comments made in the media inciting supporters to stop the Head Coach Slavko Matic from performing his duties.

“We kindly entreat All Phobians to desist from any act of violence but remain calm.

“We urge all Phobians to rather channel their petitions and or grievances if any, through the management to the Board for redress,” part of the statement reads.

The fans got triggered after Hearts lost 1-0 to their local rivals Great Olympics, who are positioned mid-table.

The club has been inconsistent in their last five matches winning two, losing two, and drawing one.

Disgruntled fans threatened to lock up the gates of their training ground to their coach Slavko Matic ahead of their game against Kumasi Asante Kotoko on Sunday, March 4, 2023.

The fans have sent word of caution to the Serbian trainer to stay away from their training ground and the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday.

They believe that the club’s poor run in the league is due to the coach’s poor tactical tweaks and that they will not allow him to handle the game against Asante Kotoko.

Hearts of Oak are now 6th on the league table with 28 points from 19 matches.

  • Hearts vs. Kotoko to be used as the President’s Cup match by GHALCA

Hearts vs. Kotoko to be used as the President’s Cup match by GHALCA

Cudjoe Fianoo, President of the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), has disclosed that his organisation is debating adding a Ghana Premier League match to this year’s President’s Cup matchup.

The encounter, a GPL round 20 match between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko on March 5, will serve as the coronation event.

He reveals that the decision to take into account the league game for the President’s Cup match was made in response to complaints from supporters about the two titans of Ghanaian football playing each other too frequently.

“As I speak with you now, we are considering two different dates,” Fianoo told Akoma FM.

“Last year, the game was honored on 4th March. This year, we wrote to the FA and proposed the 3rd of March for it. The FA drew our attention to the fact that, there is a league game between Kotoko and Hearts on the 5th of March 2023.

“Fans have been complaining about playing Kotoko versus Hearts games too many times within a given year, so we have proposed a format that will see the Kotoko versus Hearts league game double as the President Cup as well.

“If there is a winner at the end of 90 minutes, we will present the Cup to them but should the game end in a draw, we will determine the winner on penalty shootout.

“But we are yet to reach an agreement with the FA and government on this.

“Since this year’s celebration will be held in Volta Region, we are deliberating on all these options regarding date, venue and format.”

  • Kotoko overtake Hearts as Ghanaian club with most following on social media

Asante Kotoko have surpassed their bitterest rivals Hearts of Oak to emerge as the Ghanaian club with most following on social media according to the latest ranking by African Football Digital Benchmark.

The rankings were done taking into consideration the followers, likes and subscribers to the club’s Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Periscope, LinkedIn and YouTube pages or channels.

Asante Kotoko have across all digital platforms 402,000 followings, while Hearts of Oak are just a place behind the Porcupine Warriors sitting at the 28th position with a total of 382,000 followers from their six digital communities.

The Porcupine Warriors are ranked 27th on the list of top 30 clubs with the most following on social media, with Hearts of Oak lying 28th on the list.

Asante Kotoko for some time now have been doing so well on the field of play, having consistently participated in the African inter-club competitions, whereas Hearts of Oak last represented Ghana in continental football in 2015 and this might have contributed to the increase in the social media following of the former.

Hearts of Oak had been leading Asante Kotoko in the rankings for years.
