In a tragic turn of events in Nyamekrom, Eastern Region, a 60-year-old retiree named Mercy Oforiwaa has faced a horrifying fate in a dispute with her son, Gideon, over a GH¢ 500 debt.
The former Ghana Highway Authority employee has reportedly lost her life at the hands of her son, who allegedly resorted to violence after she refused to repay the owed amount, following the disbursement of her pension.
According to a news report by Angel TV, the confrontation between the mother and son escalated, resulting in Gideon assaulting Mercy Oforiwaa and causing fatal injuries.

The ensuing investigation unfolded as Gideon guided law enforcement to a specific location in Nyamekrom, where he had secretly interred his mother.
As a result of these harrowing circumstances, the mortal remains of the victim were exhumed, shedding light on the tragic and distressing ordeal that unfolded within the family.
In a grim case of retribution, a heartbroken man who had previously killed his ex-girlfriend and inflicted machete wounds on her twin sister met a similar fate and was killed in Enyan Oboom, Central Region, on Saturday.
The deceased’s body has been placed in the Ajumako Mando Etuafoa Mortuary.
According to information gathered by GHOne News reporter Yaw Boagyan, the late suspect, Bentsil Bubarick, aged 28 and an ex-convict, entered the house of his ex-girlfriend, who happened to be an identical twin, on Thursday evening, October 2, 2023.
Mistakenly believing the twin he encountered was his ex-girlfriend, he launched a vicious attack on her without any provocation, inflicting multiple wounds on her body. She was promptly rushed to the Ajumako District Government Hospital for medical attention. After assaulting the twin, he also stabbed their father and then went into hiding.
The following day, Friday, October 3, 2023, GHOne News reporter Yaw Boagyan, who had gone to the community to investigate the incident, interviewed the other twin sister, Ata Kakra. She explained that she had ended her relationship with the suspect because he had refused to heed her advice to stop using marijuana.
Less than an hour after the interview, while en route to the Ajumako Government Hospital to check on the victim, Yaw Boagyan received a call that the twin sister he had interviewed earlier had also been brutally killed by the same suspect. The suspect had realized his mistake and went back to murder his actual ex-girlfriend, dumping her lifeless body in a river.
After butchering her, the suspect dragged her to a river and disposed of her, before going on the run. Enraged residents, unable to tolerate the suspect’s heinous actions, launched a manhunt and successfully apprehended him. He was subjected to a severe beating and ultimately lost his life.
The deceased’s body has been taken to the Ajumako Mando Etuafoa Mortuary.
Residents in Dunkwa-on-Offin, in the Upper Denkyira East District, has witnessed a tragic event where a 30-year-old man, identified as Samuel Mensah, has ended the life of his girlfriend, Gifty.
The horrifying act occurred amidst a heated argument between the couple, during which Gifty expressed her desire to terminate the relationship.
Both Samuel and Gifty hailed from Wassa in the Western Region and had been cohabiting in Dunkwa-on-Offin as partners for several years.
Regrettably, the altercation culminated in a fatal outcome when Samuel allegedly lured Gifty into an unfinished building and mercilessly attacked her with a cutlass, causing injuries that proved fatal.
The shocking scene was discovered by concerned residents, who acted swiftly to apprehend Samuel. He currently remains in Police custody, pending further investigation and legal procedures.
A witness who recounted the incident to the media stated that, “The tragic incident took place in an uncompleted building. I was at home when I noticed Samuel persuading his girlfriend to follow him there. Soon after, I heard cries of distress, prompting me to rush to the location, only to find the young woman lying in a pool of blood.”
“At first, I thought it was a botched robbery, but to my dismay, I later learned that it was the girlfriend’s own partner who committed the heinous act. I tried to apprehend him, but unfortunately, I couldn’t find anyone willing to assist. However, I explained the situation to other members of the community, who eventually took action and apprehended the suspect.”
This tragic incident has left the community in shock and mourning, grappling with the loss of a young life and the brutality of the crime that took place among a couple who were known to live together.
In a tragic incident at the Kantamato Market in Accra, a second-hand clothing trader has been allegedly traditional priest.
Per reports she sought the assistance of the fetish priest to acquire wealth.
The traditional priest, identified as Agbeko Acumalt, allegedly buried the deceased in his shrine in an attempt to conceal the crime, The Chronicle reports.
He was, however, arrested along with a taxi driver, Bless Fiawofie Kwablatsey, and has been arraigned before an Achimota District Courton Monday, May 15, 2023.
In court, the prosecutor narrated that the nephew of the deceased, Emmanuel Ofori Boadi, is the complainant.
The prosecutor, Chief Inspector Margaret Ofori Boadi, told the court that the priest was living together with the deceased at Kasoa-Kuwait.
She narrated that in November 2022, the deceased lost her goods to a fire outbreak at Kantanmanto Market, which caused her financial losses.
However, in March 2023, she confided in the priest to perform some money-doubling rituals for her.
The traditional priest then led her to his shrine at Lente-Wuti, where they met an accomplice named Selassie, who assured her they could perform a ritual to get multiples of the amount she brought to them.
The priest, Selassie, gave the deceased a list of items to be purchased.
The deceased, who could not afford the item, requested to return to Accra.
After this development, the deceased frequently contacted the priest, and there were transfers of monies totalling GHC15,000. But the priest failed to double the money after receiving the said amount, causing the deceased to become furious and also threatening to arrest them as his brother was a soldier.
For fear of being arrested, the traditional priest and his accomplice planned to kill her to end the matter.
The report adds that on March 25, the priest invited the deceased to his shrine for the money but was also warned not to inform anyone about the plan.
“The deceased embarked on the trip from Kasoa-Kuwait to Lente-Wuti the next day, March 26, at about 3:30 a.m.
“Agbeko and Selassie executed their plan by strangling her to death when she reached the shrine to collect her money.
“It was narrated to the court that Agbeko and Salasie secretly burned the deceased inside the shrine,” The Chronicle reports.
However, on April 3, 2023, the family of the deceased lodged a missing person complaint to the police for investigation.
An investigation by the police led to the arrest of the priest on April 5 but claimed he had no idea of her whereabouts.
Further investigations also led to the arrest of Bless, who also claimed he did not know the whereabouts of the deceased.
The police, upon intelligence, located the grave of the deceased in Agbeko’s shrine on April 19, and upon an exhumation order from the Agbozume District Court, the action was executed on April 23, and the body of the deceased was found in a partially decomposed state.
C/Ins Boadi added that the “mortal remains of Alice were deposited at the Police Hospital Mortuary for preservation and autopsy, and on April 26, a postmortem examination was conducted on the body.
“The Police Hospital Pathologist, ACP/Dr. Owusu Afriyie established the cause of death was a result of asphyxiation, strangulation and blood loss from the cubital fossa of the left arm.
“The accused persons were, therefore, charged with the stated offences and arraigned before court,” the report added.
Late on Sunday May 7 2023, a journalist was shot and killed in Cameroon’s volatile northwest
According to a statement released by the local journalists union, the victim was the west and northwest region bureau chief for weekly newspaper “The Advocate”.
Anye Nde Nsoh was in a pub in Bamenda’s Ntarikon neighbourhood when unidentified assailants opened fire on him.
Earlier this year, a radio presenter and a journalist were killed in two separate attacks in or near the capital Yaoundé, prompting the United Nations to express concern about the media environment in Cameroon.
The journalists’ death comes amid a conflict between Cameroonian authorities and some separatist factions in English-speaking regions that turned violent in 2017.
Thousands of people have been killed in the fighting between armed separatists and government troops, with atrocities committed on both sides.
There are some bad words in the nid– section of the alphabet. The word nidor may describe a strong smell, but is especially used to refer to “the smell of cooking or burning meat or fat”; the adjective nidorous is defined as “smelling of or like burning or decaying animal matter.” As unlovable as these words are, they pale in comparison with nidorosity, which was memorably defined by Samuel Johnson as “eructation with the taste of undigested roast meat.” And however objectionable you might find this concept, you must at least admit that the word nidorosity itself is rather more pleasing to say than meat-burp.
I have been within the influence of their nidorosities. —James Beckett, Remarks on Conversations Occasioned by Mr. Burke’s Letter, 1796
Definition: 1. marked by intemperance especially in eating or drinking 2. sick from excessive indulgence in liquor
Well-nigh everyone has suffered from feeling crapulous, and most of us have been forced to make do with inelegant words such as hungover to describe our delicate condition. But what if one feels the ill-effects of over-consumption of eating overmuch, rather than those arising from intemperance?
For such occasions you may now say that you feel crapulous. It’s not related to the word crap—the two words come from different languages.
When in France, either occupied or unemployed, he has always led a life so crapulous and debauched, that it has even scandalized his vicious and immoral countrymen. —Lewis Goldsmith Stewarton, The Revolutionary Plutarch, 1804
Definition: to make the sounds of retching
It has been remarked by H. L. Mencken, Neil Simon, and many others that words with K in them are funny (or at least funny-sounding). If we accept this tenet of humor then keck must be a very funny word indeed, with its swaggering ratio of K to non-K letters. Even if you don’t think keck is a funny word, you must admit that it is useful, insofar as it describes not the action of retching, but simply making the sound of one who is attempting to vomit.
The blood-red venom on his lips Foamed as he kecked; Rabid he bit, loon-frantic tore, Like demon checked! —Francis Saltus Saltus, “Arabesque”, Honey and Gall:Poems, 1873
Definition: lavish spending on food and drink
Abligurition appears to have entered our language through being included in Nathan Bailey’s 1724 Universal Etymological English Dictionary, in which he defined the word as “a prodigal spending in Belly-Cheer.” A few decades later Samuel Johnson borrowed most of this definition (but unfortunately took out the part about “belly cheer”), and said that it was “A prodigal spending on meat and drink.” Despite being included in these two fine works abligurition is rarely, if ever, found outside the confines of a dictionary. In the event that it is encountered in general writing, it typically is still not in natural use; people will occasionally employ it to show that such a word exists.
This lady is a pedant, who culls all the difficult words from dictionaries to grace her speech; ex. gr. “…Pray, Sir Charles, make your evolution from your subderisorious cousin; manuduct the fair troglodyte (who is your sun, and be your station perihelium) to our little zeta; where you will find no supervacaneous abligurition, &c. &c.” —The Literary Journal, Dec. 1806
Definition: a rumbling sound made by the movement of gas in the intestine
If, soon after reading this list, someone happens to ask you “what is the least useful thing you learned today?” you may tell them that the word borborygmus may be pluralized in two ways, as borborygmi or borborygmies. The word may be traced back to the Greek verb borboryzein, which means “to rumble.” Knowing what the word is for this condition will not alleviate any embarrassment you might feel if this happens to you at a dinner party.
Expressed a strong desire to evacuate his bowels; the borborygmus being distinct to all in the room. —The Choler Epidemic of 1873 in the United States, 1875
Definition: inedible
Everyone has been in a situation where the food being served is inedible, and yet where propriety and good manners prevent one from proclaiming this. Now, rather than offend the cook, you may refer to the meal as “simply inesculent,” and most people will not be any the wiser. Inesculent is formed by combining the prefix in– with esculent, which simply means “edible,” and generally is used for matter that is not meant to be eaten, rather than to describe food that is disgusting.
For my part I care not a rush (or any other aquatic and inesculent vegetable) who or what sucks up either the water or the infection. —Thomas Love Peacock, Maid Marian, and Crochet Castle, 1856
Definition: Infested with maggots
We sincerely hope that you never have the occasion to use this word in a non-nautical sense (skipper may also refer to the action of being the captain of a ship). However, since we aim to provide our readers with the means to describe any kind of situation which may arise in life, we have included it in this list.
In the unlikely event that you have need of a word to refer to a specific type of food that it so infested, the adjective skippery refers to either cheese or meat that has been infected with the cheese fly larva (also known by the winsome name of cheese skippers).
It was not lawful, in those days, to pay God’s minister in musty meal, or rotten wood, or frosted fruits, or skippered meat. —J. R. Deering, in Kentucky Conference Pulpit: Being Sermons by Ministers of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, 1874
Definition: to chew repeatedly for an extended period
These days when ruminate is applied to people it most often is used to refer to the action of contemplating something, or musing on a subject (and this is the earliest meaning of the word). However, it also may refer to the action of chewing food for a long time, or to chew again on food that has been swallowed and brought back up. This sense is more frequently employed for animals, such as cows, which have more than one stomach, and chew their food repeatedly (which is why they are called ruminants). But we have all shared a table with a human ruminant, and it may be helpful to know the word with which you may describe this creature.
This ruminating man lived at Bristol. He would begin to chew his meat over again within a quarter of an hour after his meals, if he drank upon them; if not, it was some time longer. —The Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London, 1691 (1809)
The captain of the boat that carried mourners from Azizanya to Azizakpe in the Volta Region and drowned them has been detained.
The boat that was carrying more than 40 people to a funeral in Azizakpe overturned because it was overloaded with people.
Five people were reportedly dead.
Assembly member of Azizakpe Electoral Area, Daniel Adzakpa said whereas the boat was to take about 25 people at a time, it had on board about 60 persons. He also attributed the disaster to stormy weather in the early hours of Saturday, March 18, 2023.
According to a 3news.com report, Gabriel Ajigodi who was sailing the boat at the time of the incident has been taken into custody at the Ada Foah Police Station where he is assisting with investigations.
Some survivors of the tragedy told TV3 that passengers, after realizing the situation prompted the sailor to return to the boarding point but he turned deaf ears to their pleas and insisted he would take them to their destination.
The incident is said to have happened in the middle of the journey. Mary Donuki, a survivor, lost her one-and-half-year baby.
Meanwhile, search efforts are still underway to find other survivors.
In the course of their duties, two police officers in the western Canadian province of Alberta were shot and killed while attending to a family dispute.
A 16-year-old male is the suspect in the fatal shooting, according to Edmonton police.
The adolescent self-inflicted a gunshot wound, according to police.
The teenager’s mother, a 55-year-old woman, was also shot and taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The officers killed were Travis Jordan, 35, and Brett Ryan, 30. Both worked with the Edmonton Police Service. Mr Jordan had been with the force for more than eight years, while Mr Ryan had been an officer for more than five years.
Police Chief Dale McFee said the two officers were shot on Thursday after responding to a domestic dispute call at an apartment complex in Edmonton at around 00:47 local time (06:47 GMT).
The call was made by the suspect’s mother, police said, and officers met her outside the building. As they approached the apartment, the officers were shot multiple times by a young male suspect at the door.
Devin Laforce, Edmonton police’s chief deputy of investigations, said neither officers discharged their firearm as they had “no opportunity” to do so. They also were not aware that the teenager had a weapon prior to arriving, as the initial 911 call made no mention of it.
Deputy Chief Laforce said the suspect and his mother then got into an altercation, during which she was shot as well.
Police did not name the suspect or his mother, who remains in hospital in serious but stable condition.
Chief McFee said the two officers were given aid immediately and rushed to hospital. “Unfortunately, they were both declared deceased at the hospital,” he said.
Deputy Chief Laforce said the teenager was known to police, who had responded to the apartment in the past for “non-violent” mental health calls. The suspect did not have a criminal record, he said.
Police did not reveal what type of gun was used in the shooting, and said they are currently investigating where it originated from.
Condolences have poured in from several police forces around Canada, including in Vancouver and Toronto, as well as from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
“Every day, police officers put themselves in harm’s way to keep people safe,” Mr Trudeau said in a post on Twitter. “The news that two Edmonton police officers have been killed in the line of duty reminds us of that reality. I’m sending my condolences to the officers’ loved ones and colleagues – we’re here for you.”
Edmonton mayor Amarjeet Sohi described it as a “very difficult and sad day”.
“Every day, families of the police officers send their loved ones off to duty, to work and hope they return home safely,” Mr Sohi said.
“We hold you in our hearts as you mourn this profound loss and we mourn it with you,” he said.
Eight police officers have been killed on the line of duty in Canada in the last six months. The other fatalities occurred in Ontario and British Columbia.
Two high schoolstudents in Iowa (US) killed their Spanish teacher in retaliation over a poor grade she gave one of the students in her class, prosecutors said in court documents on Tuesday. The duo is being tried as adults.
For the first time since Willard Miller and Jeremy Goodale were apprehended and accused of killing their 66-year-old teacher Nohema Graber in the little hamlet of Fairfield on November 2, 2021, the new information provided insight into a potential reason.
On the afternoon of her death, Miller and Graber had a meeting at Fairfield High School to address his subpar grade in her class, according to the investigation.
Later that day, according to officials, the teacher drove her vehicle to a park where she was known to go for daily walks after school.
Graber’s brutally battered body was discovered in the park the next day, concealed behind a tarp, a wheelbarrow, and railroad ties.
Investigators think that Miller and Goodale, both 16 at the time, beat the victim to death with a baseball bat and boasted about it online.
Miller admitted to the police that he had been unhappy with the way Graber had taught Spanish and that the poor grade she had given him had hurt his GPA as a whole.
“The poor grade is believed to be the motive behind the murder of Graber which directly connects Miller,” court documents filed by Jefferson County Attorney Chauncey Moulding and Assistant Iowa Attorney General Scott Brown said.
A “roving group of masked teenagers” killed Graber and compelled Miller to dispose of the body, according to court papers. Although Miller initially claimed he had no knowledge of what had happened, he later “said he had information of everything but did not participate.”

Less than an hour after the instructor arrived, observers saw two guys driving Graber’s vehicle out of the park. According to detectives, the two adolescent males were found walking down the same route as the vehicle, which had been abandoned at the end of a rural road.

On Snapchat, Goodale reportedly boasted to a friend about the murder. A witness submitted images of a Snapchat discussion in which the adolescent specifically accused himself and Miller of being responsible for the murder of Graber.
However, according to Miller’s attorney Christine Branstad, four search warrants were improperly obtained. She is requesting that the court invalidate all four of them and suppress evidence from Snapchat as well as from her client’s home, statements he made to the police, and data gleaned from his phone.
On Wednesday, a judge will hear arguments to determine whether to suppress any of the evidence.
A two-year-old boy was burnt beyond recognition when two Diesel tankers caught fire near a filling station at Apremdo in the Effia-Kwesimitsim Municipality of the Western Region.
The boy was sleeping in a metal container close to the scene when the unfortunate incident occurred.
According to sources, the Diesel tankers were parked behind the filling station, awaiting orders from pump managers to discharge fuel into reservoirs.
The cause of the inferno was not immediately known, but some of the residents claimed that at about 3:00pm, they heard a blast from where the tankers were parked and realised the place was up in smoke.
“Most of the people in the area, including the mother of the two-year-old boy who was selling in the container, started running away to safety. The mother later realised that her two-year-old boy was sleeping in the metal container and before she decided to go back for the little boy, the inferno had gutted the container,†an eyewitness narrated.
The eyewitness said the mother of the boy was seriously injured when she tried to go and rescue him and was rushed to the hospital for treatment.
When DGN Online got to the area at about 3:15pm, heavy dark smoke could be seen in the skies.
Most of the people there were seen praying for the firemen to extinguish the fire because it was getting close to nearby pump stations and a market.
Before the fire was brought under control, more than half a dozen metal containers had been razed by the wildfire.
The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Ghana National Fire Service in the Western Region, Emmanuel Bonney, said the fire fighters were able to bring the fire under control some few minutes after arriving at the scene.
He cautioned the public against rushing to fire scenes to take pictures and converging around since they put their lives at risk.
A 26-year-old faRmer, Mensah Kpogo Gamali, has shot and killed his wife at Pieso near Aboso in the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality.
He also allegedly shot himself after he succeeded in killing his 21-year-old wife, Comfort Ativor.
Superintendent of Police Thomas Osei Ababio, Tarkwa District Police Commander who confirmed the incident to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), said at about 0830 hours on February 2, this year, police received information from Pieso that around 0630 hours on the same day, Mensah killed his wife and later shot himself.
He said police proceeded to the crime scene and found the lifeless bodies lying with a single barrel shotgun beside Mensah.
Mr Ababio said Mensah was wearing a pair of Jeans trousers over a red T-shirt, while Ativor was wearing a white straight dress, and both bodies were lying in a pool of blood.
According to the District Police Commander, when the police examined both bodies, they found out that Mensah and Ativor sustained gunshot wounds on the chest and left eye respectively.
He further added that spot investigation conducted by the police revealed that a misunderstanding ensued between the couple who had two children, which compelled Ativor to leave her matrimonial home to seek refuge in her father’s cottage at Repairer Akura.
On Saturday, February 1 Ativor went for a watch night service in the company of her 15-year-old brother and one of her children at Pieso, which ended around 0530 hours the following day, he said.
Mr Ababio narrated that on their way home Ativor met Mensah wielding a single barrel gun, who questioned Ativor her mission that dawn, but before she could utter a word, he shot her in the left eye and also shot himself.
He said both bodies are sent to the Apinto government hospital for preservation and autopsy.
