  • Jordan Ayew gets the nod from football writers as Crystal Palace Player of the Year

Majority of football writers at sportsmole.co.uk have chosen Ghana striker Jordan Ayew as Crystal Palace’s Player of Year.

Ayew was in top form before the suspension of the English Premier League due to the Coronavirus outbreak.

The Ghana international banged in goals to ensure the Eagles won three games in a row after winning just one of their previous 12.

But the performance of goalkeeper Vicente Guaita has been impressive too with Roy Hodgson’s side needing only one more point to reach the 40-point safety mark.

Here are the views of Sports Mole team on who they think has been Palace’s player of the season so far.

    Barney Corkhill, Editor:

Considering Crystal Palace’s poor attacking record this season it seems somewhat counter-intuitive to select a striker as their best player of the campaign, but in a squad where few individuals have stood out, Jordan Ayew has been Palace’s most important member for me.

The 28-year-old has scored eight of Palace’s 26 goals, and crucially five of those have been winning goals – only the Liverpool trio of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino have been responsible for more winners.

Ayew’s goals have been the difference between Hodgson’s side battling for a place in the top half or fighting against relegation, and a special mention must also go to his goal-of-the-season contender against West Ham United.

    Matt Law, Football Editor:

The likes of Vicente Guaita and Gary Cahill deserve praise for their performances this season, but Jordan Ayew, in my opinion, deserves to be named Palace’s player of the season.

The 29-year-old has managed eight Premier League goals this term and his form has been particularly important considering that the team’s star man Wilfried Zaha has registered just three league goals.

Only Zaha (29) has made more league appearances than Ayew (28) for Roy Hodgson’s side this term, while the attacker has scored the winner in Palace’s last two league games against Brighton & Hove Albion and Watford. One thing is for sure, the Eagles would not be 11th in the table at this stage without Ayew’s goals.

    Darren Plant, Senior Reporter:

On six occasions, Palace have prevailed by one-goal margins when Ayew has made an impact in the final third, which includes a goal against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

However, five of his other seven strikes have come against teams below Palace in the table, meaning that the versatile attacker has been the major difference between a relegation battle.

    Dan Lewis, Senior Reporter:

Despite netting just one top-flight goal during last season’s loan spell, Ayew clearly did enough to persuade Palace to pay Swansea City £2.5m to sign him permanently last July.

That has to go down as one of the best signings of the summer transfer window as the Ghanaian has eight goals to his name.

Bongani Zungu (South Africa – Amiens)

If Amiens snatched a good point in Marseille at the finish (2-2), Bongani Zungu is no stranger to it. Combative at will, the South African halted many adverse actions and recovered a good number of balloons to end up reigning over the midfield.
    Moreto Cassama (Guinea-Bissau – Reims)

Moretto Cassama could have opened the scoring from the 4th minute of play if his attempt had not been rejected by the Brest cross. With 94% of successful passes and a presence in the heart of the game, the former FC Porto reserve has nonetheless made an excellent copy.

    Sadio Mané (Senegal – Liverpool)

While Liverpool was led by Bournemouth, Sadio Mané handed the Reds over. First passer for Mohamed Salah on equalization, the Senegalese himself scored the victory goal (2-1) on a deep service from Van Dijk.

    Victor Osimhen (Nigeria – Lille)

Very solid and available on the attacking front, Victor Osimhen gave a bad evening to the defenders of Olympique Lyonnais. Fast, impregnable in depth, the Nigerian freed up many spaces for his partner Loïc Rémy, author of the victory goal (1-0). El Bilal Touré (Mali-Reims)
El Bilal Touré scored against Brest (1-0) his third goal in Ligue 1 at the reception of a center at the far post of his compatriot Moussa Doumbia. Arrived at the Reims stadium to strengthen his reserve team, the African champion U20 burns the stages.

  • Tony Yeboah plays down Jordan Ayew comparison

Former Leeds United forward Anthony Yeboah has highlighted the uniqueness of his status as Ghana’s joint-record top scorer in the English Premier League.

Comparisons between the now 53-year-old and compatriot Jordan Ayew have emerged after the latter netted a match-winner for Crystal Palace in a clash with Watford on Saturday to go level on goals with the former.

While both men have 24 goals to their names, Yeboah achieved the feat in only 47 matches. Ayew, on the other hand, made his 128th appearance in Saturday’s 1-0 triumph.

“If you compare my games to Jordan’s, it tells you I had fewer games. I played 47 matches, scoring 24 goals in two and half years for Leeds United,” Yeboah told Angel FM.

“[The English Premier League] is not a small league but Jordan scoring 24 goals means that the future is bright for him despite playing more matches than me.

“Looking at his age, he can add more goals if he continues to play in the Premier League.

“But for now, if you compare my statistics with him, you can see some sort of differences between us.”

Yeboah spent two years on the books of then-Premier League outfit Leeds, from 1995 to 1997.

Ayew, on the other hand, is in his fifth season in the English top-flight, having also previously played for Aston Villa and Swansea City.

With the exception of a half-season Championship spell with Villa in 2016-2017, the 28-year-old has played in the Premier League since moving from France to England in 2015.

  • Jordan Ayew makes BBC Premier League team of the week

Ghana striker Jordan Ayew has made it to the BBC Premier League Team of the Week after an impressive showing in the league this past weekend.

Ayew scored the winner as Crystal Palace earned their third straight victory by beating Watford 1-0 at Selhurst Park on Saturday.

BC football analyst Garth Crooks who picked the team said; “He scored against Brighton last week and again against Watford. It’s a good job Jordan Ayew has netted eight times for Crystal Palace this season because without his goals the Eagles wouldn’t have landed 39 points with nine games to spare, and instead crashed and burned.

I accept Christian Benteke is coming into some form (which is good to see) and Wilfried Zaha continues to give defences palpitations, which all helps, but neither Benteke or Zaha can finish. And if I see Zaha trying to do the twist in order to use his right foot to score a goal I will scream. Swing the left!”

The goal is the 28-year-old’s eighth strike of the season.
