Jordan Ayew picks Christian Atsu as the best teammate he has ever played with

Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew has praised the late Christian Atsu, calling him the best teammate he has ever played with.

Atsu, who won the Best Player award at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), sadly lost his life in 2023 after being trapped under rubble during a massive earthquake in Turkey, where he was playing football.

When asked to name the best player he has played alongside, Ayew immediately mentioned Atsu without any doubt.

“The best player I’ve ever played with, unfortunately, is no longer with us, and that’s Christian [Atsu]. I played with Muntari and Essien,” he told Joy Sports.

“Asamoah [Gyan] and Andre [Ayew] are also up there, but I’ll go with Atsu. He didn’t get enough plaudits for how good he was on the field,” he added.

Jordan Ayew has been in excellent form as captain of the Black Stars, guiding Ghana to consecutive victories in the FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

The team delivered an impressive 5-0 win against Chad before securing a 3-0 triumph over Madagascar. Ayew played a key role in both matches, contributing to five goals—scoring once and providing four assists.

With Ghana leading Group I with 15 points, three ahead of second-placed Comoros, Ayew will be determined to keep the team’s winning streak alive.

Before returning to World Cup qualifiers in September against Chad and Mali, the Black Stars will take part in a four-nation tournament in England.

The team has faced mixed results in recent matches, and head coach Otto Addo has emphasized the importance of a strong performance against Chad.

In a pre-match press conference, Ayew expressed confidence in the squad’s ability to deliver. “We are fully prepared and motivated. Every game is important, and we will give our best to make the nation proud,” he said.

Being named captain of Black Stars was written in the stars – Jordan Ayew

Jordan Ayew believes his appointment as the Black Stars’ captain was inevitable.

The forward, who has been part of the national team since 2010, has earned over 100 caps and remained a consistent figure in Ghana’s squad.

Like his father, Abedi Pele, and his brother, Andre Ayew, Jordan has always shown commitment to the team, making himself available for selection whenever called upon.

In March, he was officially named the Black Stars’ captain, putting an end to ongoing debates about frequent leadership changes in the squad.

He took over from Andre Ayew, although Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey had stepped in as captain in Andre’s absence.

Speaking to Joy Sports about his new role, Jordan said it was only a matter of time before he became captain, following in the footsteps of his father and brother.

“I believe in destiny. I believe [becoming Ghana captain] was probably written in the stars,” he said.

Jordan captained Ghana against Angola in the Black Stars’ penultimate game in their underwhelming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Jordan Ayew refutes disunity claims amongst Black Stars, says they are like brothers

Ghanaian footballer Jordan Ayew has dismissed rumors of division among Black Stars players, insisting they share a strong bond like brothers.

Ayew was named captain of the team ahead of the World Cup qualifiers in March, having previously led Ghana in an AFCON qualifier against Angola last November.

The 33-year-old took over the leadership role from his older brother, Andre Ayew, who had worn the captain’s armband for years.

In 2024, Ghana’s captaincy became a hot topic, with different players, including Thomas Partey, Mohammed Kudus, and Jordan Ayew, taking turns leading the team. Reports suggested this led to internal conflicts.

However, Jordan Ayew has denied these claims, saying any disagreements within the squad are normal and similar to what happens in a family. He assured that there are no serious issues among the players.

“Obviously, we are both best friends because everyone is different and has who they’re closest to. But just like a family, the fact that you’re closer to your sister doesn’t mean you don’t love your brother. There’s no problem or friction. We are like brothers,” he told Joy Sports.

Ayew will lead the Black Stars out as captain for the first time when Ghana face Chad on Friday in the World Cup qualifiers.

Jordan Ayew has been named captain of Ghana’s Black Stars for their upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has confirmed.

The Crystal Palace striker takes over the role from his older brother, Andre Ayew, who has not been included in the 23-man squad for these crucial matches.

Meanwhile, Thomas Partey, who led the team in their previous qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic, has reportedly declined any leadership position in the squad.

Jordan Ayew, an experienced member of the Black Stars, will now lead the team as they fight for important points in their bid to qualify for the World Cup. Ghana recently missed out on the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and is determined to secure a spot at the global tournament.

The Black Stars will play Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday, March 21, before traveling to Morocco to face Madagascar on Monday, March 24.

Currently, Ghana sits second in Group I with nine points, the same as group leaders Comoros. The team will begin training on Monday, March 17, in preparation for the matches.

Jordan Ayew, Gideon Mensah, Alidu Seidu, and Abdul Fatawu Issahaku have been ruled out of Ghana’s upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Niger due to injuries.

Alidu Seidu and Gideon Mensah, who were doubtful ahead of the Angola match and required late fitness tests, have been declared unfit following post-match medical evaluations that highlighted their inability to play.

After consultations between the Black Stars’ medical head, Dr. Prince Pambo, and Leicester City’s medical team, it was agreed that both Ayew and Issahaku would return to their club on Sunday to commence rehabilitation.

Mohammed Kudus and Jordan Ayew shared a heartfelt moment during the Black Stars’ final training session at the Estadio de Novembro ahead of their crucial clash with Angola in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

As leaders of the current squad, with Jordan Ayew serving as captain and Kudus as vice-captain, the two players were seen in a brief yet significant interaction.

In a video from the session, Jordan called Kudus to the sideline for a quick discussion, with Kudus nodding in agreement, signaling their mutual commitment to steering the team towards victory.

Jordan Ayew has taken over captaincy duties for these matches, a role previously held by Kudus during the team’s last games against Sudan. The announcement was made by head coach Otto Addo during the unveiling of the squad for the final qualifiers.

The Black Stars find themselves at the bottom of Group F with just two points. A win against Angola, who have already secured qualification, would elevate Ghana to third place, just two points behind Sudan, keeping their chances alive.

The high-stakes encounter is set to kick off at 19:00 GMT, with Ghana fighting to revive their AFCON aspirations.

Jordan Ayew is Black Stars’ new captain

Jordan Ayew has been named the new captain of the Black Stars for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations Group F qualifiers against Angola and Niger, head coach Otto Addo confirmed.

This decision comes after Mohammed Kudus’ leadership in the previous double-header against Sudan, which ended in disappointing results for Ghana with a 0-0 home draw and a 2-0 away loss.

Explaining the change, Addo expressed confidence in Ayew’s experience, saying, “Jordan Ayew will captain the Black Stars in Thomas Partey’s absence, as I believe Mohammed Kudus still has a lot to learn to be a captain.” Ayew, who recently showcased his scoring abilities with a hat-trick against the Central African Republic in the World Cup qualifiers, now has the opportunity to lead Ghana toward crucial victories in the AFCON qualifiers.

The 25-man squad also features three standout home-based players: Isaac Afful (FC Samartex 1996), Razak Simpson (Nations FC), and Emmanuel Antwi (Asante Kotoko), who have impressed in the ongoing Ghana Premier League season. Antwi, a 24-year-old former Accra Great Olympics player, has played an instrumental role for the Porcupine Warriors, making nine appearances, scoring once, and earning one Man of the Match award.

Ghana must secure wins against Angola and Niger to qualify for the Morocco 2025 tournament, while also hoping that Sudan drops points in their final matches. The Black Stars are set to play Angola in Luanda on Friday, November 15, before returning to face Niger at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday, November 18, 2024.

Renowned sports journalist Saddick Adams has revealed that Jordan Ayew is dissatisfied with the Black Stars management due to how the team’s captaincy change was handled.

He reported that head coach Otto Addo failed to personally inform Jordan Ayew before publicly announcing Mohammed Kudus as the new captain, a decision Jordan perceived as disrespectful given his seniority in the squad.

In an interview with Peace FM, Adams also mentioned that even the Black Stars management committee was unaware of the captaincy shift until it was made public, further adding to the dissatisfaction around the issue.

“Jordan Ayew’s anger is due to the fact that before Otto Addo announced Kudus as the Black Stars captain, he did not tell him [Jordan] personally. He is the senior-most player in the team.

In a video shared on X, the two players were seen engaged in a heated argument, prompting teammates to intervene and separate them.

The team has managed to secure only two points from four matches, leaving them in third place in their group.

To keep their hopes alive, the Black Stars must win their remaining two qualifying games while also relying on Sudan to lose their upcoming matches.

Jordan Ayew, who scored a hat-trick, and Black Stars assistant coach Joseph Laumann were at the centre of the incident at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

Henry Asante Twum revealed that the scuffle began when Jordan Ayew defended his teammates from verbal abuse by a player and the assistant coach of the Central African Republic.

The player made derogatory remarks in French, not realising that Jordan Ayew and several Black Stars players understood the language.

Infuriated by the comments, Jordan Ayew confronted the player.

Simultaneously, Laumann, who also speaks French, addressed the assistant coach of C.A.R. for his similar comments.

“The report I received is that after the match, one of the Central African Republic players and their assistant coach insulted the Black Stars players in French. They didn’t realize that Jordan was adept in French, so Jordan confronted him,” he said.

“Joseph Laumann is also fluent in French, so he confronted the assistant coach. The assistant coach of C.A.R was the first to attack our assistant coach, but we managed to calm the situation and ensure it didn’t escalate. Despite André Ayew’s impressive form at Le Havre, where he scored six goals in 12 starts, he was notably omitted from Otto Addo’s 26-man squad for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers’ third and fourth matches.

The decision to exclude André surprised many fans, given his recent performances.

Following Ghana’s thrilling 4-3 victory over the Central African Republic on Monday, questions arose about André’s absence.

In response, Otto Addo chose to address the situation on behalf of Jordan Ayew.

“Let me speak for Jordan. Of course, he wants his brother beside him, but ultimately, the decision lies with me and the coaching staff. As a brother, naturally, he would prefer to have Andre next to him,” Addo explained.

“But I have a responsibility to the national team and to Ghana. I must make decisions that are best for the team. Who knows? Maybe Andre will be included in the future, or maybe not.

It’s uncertain. I might not even be here to decide. We just don’t know what the future holds.”

Jordan Ayew has played a pivotal role for Ghana, scoring decisive goals in their recent victories over Mali and the Central African Republic.

Jordan Ayew and the captain of the Central African Republic, Amos Youga, have been captured in a viral video after the 2026 World Cup qualifiers between the two teams at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on June 10, 2024.

Initially perceived to be a harmless exchange, it escalated into a fight between the duo, where the captain of CAR slapped Ayew on the neck as he held on to his head with both hands, after which, in a retaliatory move, pushed the CAR captain Black Stars goalkeeper Ati-Zigi in to separate and calm the two.

More players from both teams later rushed back to the park.

Jordan Ayew’s hattrick edges Ghana past CAR in 4-3 win

Ghana’s Black Stars secured another narrow victory in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, edging out the Central African Republic (CAR) 4-3 in a thrilling match at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Monday, June 10, 2024.

Jordan Ayew, delivering perhaps his finest performance in the Ghanaian jersey, netted a hat-trick, while Fatawu Issahaku added another goal, ensuring the team’s unbeaten home record at the Baba Yara Stadium remained intact.

The Black Stars have not suffered a defeat at this venue since 2000.

The match was a tale of two halves for the four-time African champions, who needed a spirited second-half display to recover from a lacklustre first-half performance.

Ayew opened the scoring just three minutes into the game with a coolly taken penalty. However, the visitors demonstrated resilience, equalising in the 11th minute through Louis Mafouta’s clinical finish.

Mafouta capitalised on a defensive error to give the Central African Republic the lead just before halftime, leaving Ghana trailing by a goal as they headed into the break.

The Black Stars returned rejuvenated for the second half, with Mohammed Kudus orchestrating their attacking play.

Jordan Ayew levelled the score in the 60th minute, connecting with a delightful cross from Gideon Mensah.

Abdul Fatawu Isshaku extended Ghana’s lead two minutes later with a deflected effort from the edge of the box, before Jordan completed his hat-trick in the 69th minute, capitalising on a rebound.

Despite a late free-kick goal from Mafouta in the 90th minute, Ghana held on to secure their second consecutive victory in the qualifiers.

With this win, Ghana now leads Group I with 9 points, followed by Madagascar and Comoros with 6 points each.

Mali and the Central African Republic are tied for fourth place with 4 points each, while Chad sits at the bottom of the table with zero points.

The match saw Mali take the initial lead just before halftime.

Kamory Doumbia capitalised on a deflection off Alexander Djiku, putting the Eagles ahead.

Despite Mali’s strong start and early efforts, including notable saves by Ghanaian goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi, Ghana gradually found their footing.

Ghana’s equalizer came in the 58th minute when Ernest Nuamah headed in a brilliant cross from Salis Abdul Samed.

The game continued with intense efforts from both sides, with Thomas Partey almost securing a win for Ghana before added time, only to be thwarted by Mali’s goalkeeper.

In the dying moments of the match, Jordan Ayew delivered the decisive goal, firing past the Malian defence to secure all three points for the Black Stars.

This victory brings Ghana to six points from three games, trailing behind Comoros only on goal difference.

The Black Stars will next face the Central African Republic at the Baba Yara Stadium on the fourth matchday of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying series.

It’s just one where we had to get something out of the game, and we managed to get a point, so we’re happy and move on to the next one,” he added.

Next on the agenda for Jordan Ayew and Crystal Palace is a match against relegation strugglers Burnley on Saturday, February 24th.

They only ‘attack’ us because we can offer more – Abedi Pele addresses trolling of sons

Abed Pele, the legendary African football icon, has expressed that Ghanaians criticize his sons, Dede Ayew and Jordan Ayew, because of their excellence in football.

According to him, the constant criticism arises from the high expectations placed on them due to their exceptional skills, and Ghanaians believe they can deliver even more.

Abedi Pele drew a parallel with his own playing days, noting that he faced similar situations, and emphasized that the criticisms wouldn’t exist if his sons were not outstanding in their football performances.

“They have never got it wrong. What I can say is that they’ve never left me alone. When I was playing it was the same so there is nothing wrong with it. It is because they know you have and you can do it that is why they come at you. If you don’t have it nobody will call your name,” he told Sammy Yeboah.

Andre Dede Ayew and Jordan Ayew continually face criticism, particularly regarding their roles in the Black Stars. Some contend that they have surpassed their prime and should make way for younger players to take the lead.

  • Man United lose to Crystal Palace

Manchester United endured a second consecutive home defeat in the Premier League as Crystal Palace secured an impressive victory at Old Trafford, courtesy of Joachim Andersen’s outstanding strike.

These two teams had faced each other just five days earlier, with Erik ten Hag’s side comfortably winning 3-0 in the Carabao Cup.

However, Palace had rested several first-team players for that match and presented a different challenge on Saturday, delivering a flawless away performance.

After Tyrick Mitchell cleared Rasmus Hojlund’s attempt off the line, Palace took the lead when Andersen brilliantly fired a first-time shot into the top corner following a free-kick.

Following that, Manchester United increased their offensive pressure but encountered difficulties in breaching the Palace defense. When they did manage to create opportunities, goalkeeper Sam Johnstone displayed exceptional form.

Sam Johnstone played a pivotal role in the second half by making two critical saves to maintain Crystal Palace‘s lead. He first tipped over Bruno Fernandes’ dipping shot and then denied Rasmus Hojlund’s powerful header.

The Palace goal appeared to have a stroke of luck on their side as Manchester United struggled to break through. As a result, the visitors secured a victory that propelled them to ninth place in the standings, while the hosts slipped to 10th.

For Erik ten Hag’s team, it marked their fourth defeat in seven Premier League matches, representing their worst start to a league season after seven games in 34 years.

Crystal Palace scored a first-half goal for the first time this season

Manchester United entered September with three consecutive defeats and were eager to conclude the month on a positive note. A victory against Crystal Palace would have marked their third consecutive win and potentially kick-started their season.

Following their comfortable victory over Roy Hodgson’s team on Tuesday, home fans may have anticipated a similar outcome against the Eagles.

Initially, it appeared that way as Manchester United made a strong start, but Tyrick Mitchell’s goal-line clearance proved to be a pivotal moment.

Subsequently, Palace began to pose more of a counter-attacking threat, while Manchester United grew increasingly frustrated as they struggled to break through their opponents’ defense.

At the end of the match, there were boos from the home fans, who voiced their frustration at the match officials due to the dismissal of a couple of penalty appeals.

Ultimately, the hosts had numerous opportunities to secure a draw, but a combination of poor finishing and exceptional defending ensured that it would not be their day.

Al-Majali stated that “the Israeli government bears responsibility for the escalation in Jerusalem and in all of the occupied Palestinian territories, as well as for the deterioration that will get worse if it does not cease its incursions into the revered Al-Aqsa mosque… and its terrorising of worshippers in these blessed days.

The warning from Jordan was followed by a statement from the Israeli Foreign Ministry early on Sunday, saying that people who, “barricade themselves inside [the al-Aqsa mosque] are a dangerous mob, radicalized and incited by Hamas and other terror organizations.”

The Israeli Foreign Ministry called on Jordan’s Waqf guards, “to immediately remove from the al-Aqsa Mosque these extremists who are planning to riot (on Sunday) during Muslim prayers on the Temple Mount and the Priestly Blessing at the Western Wall.”

The Waqf is the Jordan-appointed body that manages the al-Aqsa mosque compound, known as the Temple Mount by Jews.

Israeli police raided Jerusalem’s al-Aqsa mosque twice on Wednesday last week, claiming that “hundreds of rioters and mosque desecrators (had) barricaded themselves” inside.

On Saturday night, the Israeli police again alleged that, “many youngsters [had] entered the mosque and closed the doors, for no reason.”

Israeli police raids of al-Aqsa mosque are considered by Muslims as a major provocation.

Jordan Ayew, Zaha are outstanding players, says Pep Guardiola

Despite Crystal Palace’s loss on Saturday, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has heaped praise on Jordan Ayew.

The reigning champions were welcomed to Selhurst Pack by the Eagles.

Up until the Citizens were given a penalty for Michael Olise’s late challenge on Ilkay Gundogan, Jordan kept up his impressive play for the home team.

The 28th goal of the year for Erling Haaland came from the penalty spot.

After the game, Guardiola praised Palace’s tenacity and praised Ayew and Zaha for their contributions despite the team’s loss at home.

“It is always tricky playing here [Selhurst Park],” told Sky Sports.

“We are always confident playing at home but I always have this belief that it is always tricky here.

“The way they play and run is just incredible. Jordan Ayew and Zaha are incredible players.

“They are always running and creating spaces for the team,” he added.

With the loss, Palace’s worrisome 10-match losing streak in league play is now the longest in the division, and Patrick Vieira’s team is now only four points above the relegation zone.

Jordan Ayew has been selected for the Black Stars team to play Angola in a doubleheader at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations [AFCON] later this month.
