Mahama cares about just himself and family not Ghanaians – Ex NDC executive

A former executive of the Tema East Constituency branch of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has accused their party’s flagbearer, former President John Mahama, of lacking empathy towards the plight of Ghanaians.

During an interview with journalists in Tema on Workers’ Day, Stephen Ashitey Adjei, also known as Moshake, pointed out that Mr. John Mahama’s alleged lack of empathy is demonstrated by his refusal to apologize for what some perceive as mistreatment of Ghanaian workers during his presidency.

Moshake argued that if John Mahama possessed even a hint of humility and respect for the citizenry, he would have apologized sincerely to Ghanaians for the perceived mistreatment of workers.

“The former president, after putting public sector employment on hold for the longest period in the history of the Fourth Republic, also refused to pay the benefits of some who had served in state-owned enterprises.

“And yet, when it came to himself and his family, he awarded large contracts and paid himself a hefty ex-gratia. Mahama simply does not care about Ghanaians. What kind of dead goat is this?” Moshake said.

The comment comes as Mr. John Mahama campaigns for the 2024 presidential election.

“For me personally, the evidence that John Mahama does not care about workers and Ghanaians in general is both known and felt on personal and general levels. We all know how he stopped the payment of the retrenchment benefits of GPHA ex-workers after former President Atta Mills had ordered them to be paid.

Moshake alleges that Mr. Mahama’s ambition to reclaim the presidency is driven solely by selfish motives, aiming to accumulate wealth for himself and his family while neglecting the welfare of the Ghanaian populace.

“Everyone knows that there is no significant development that Mr. John Mahama can achieve in four years if he is re-elected president, so what else, apart from greed, would make him want to become president again after serving as MP, deputy minister, minister, Vice President, and President?” Moshake asked.

  • Mahama vows to reopen probe into Cecilia Dapaah’s case

Mahama vows to reopen probe into Cecilia Dapaah’s case

Former President John Mahama has voiced his dissatisfaction with the outcome of the probe into alleged corruption involving ex-Sanitation Minister Cecilia Abena Dapaah.

The investigation centered on accusations against two house helps employed by Mrs. Dapaah and her husband, Daniel Osei Kuffour.

The employees, Patience Botwe (18) and Sarah Agyei (30), faced charges in the Accra Circuit Court for reportedly stealing valuables worth millions of cedis from the couple’s residence in Abelemkpe, Accra, between July and October 2022.

The stolen items included US$1 million, €300,000, and millions of Ghana Cedis.

Upon referral of the case to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) for a money laundering investigation by the Special Prosecutor, the Attorney General’s Office advised against initiating such proceedings.

They stressed the necessity of proving that financial gains stemmed from criminal activities to pursue money laundering charges effectively.

Additionally, the Attorney General’s Office suggested that the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) handle inquiries into the source of Cecilia Dapaah’s funds.

Expressing his disappointment with these developments, former President Mahama indicated his intention to reopen investigations into the alleged corruption involving the former Sanitation Minister if elected in the 2024 general elections.

Meanwhile, Mary Awelana Addah, Executive Director of Ghana Integrity Initiatives (GII), criticized EOCO’s handling of the case. She suggested that while EOCO may seek legal advice from the AG’s Office, it should have continued its independent investigation until it reached a point requiring prosecutorial guidance.

Addah emphasized the importance of EOCO pursuing investigations diligently to their conclusion before consulting external entities for prosecution advice.

“But then it is what it is; it is very unfortunate; let me not mince words at all. The impression this is creating is that we can always get away with anything, particularly when it comes to issues around allegations of corruption because we would use the weakness in the regime or legal regime to get away with them,” she said.

God makes rulers, not you! – Mahama tells Akufo-Addo

The 2024 Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has emphasized to President Akufo-Addo that determining his successor is not within the President’s authority as he prepares to leave office.

Speaking at a ceremony in Damongo, in the Savannah Region, where he laid the foundation stone for a new multipurpose Ndewura Jakpa palace, Mahama reminded the outgoing President that overseeing a peaceful and credible election is the most significant legacy he owes to the people of Ghana.

The project, featuring Malian architectural designs, includes a palace, a residence, and a meeting area, and is being financed by Mahama himself.

Although President Akufo-Addo was present at the ceremony, he had departed before Mahama made these comments directed at him.

“I wish to urge our president; this was my message to Nana Akufo-Addo, unfortunately, he has left, and he has left only our member of the council of state on the high table.

“I wish to urge our President that the best legacy he can leave this country, is to superintend over a peaceful, transparent and credible election.”

‘I wish to remind him, that it is God who makes rulers, and he can never ever be the one to choose his successor. It is God who will choose his successor “he stated to thunderous cheers from the crowd.

Former President John Dramani Mahama reiterated Ghana’s role as a beacon of democracy in Africa and emphasized the incumbent President’s responsibility to uphold this reputation. He condemned the violent incidents during the 2020 elections, where eight Ghanaians reportedly lost their lives due to alleged shootings by security personnel.

Mahama expressed surprise at the lack of a thorough investigation into the matter, the punishment of the perpetrators, and adequate compensation for the victims’ families. He pledged that if the NDC regains power after the 2024 election, the families of the victims would receive proper compensation.

The new multipurpose Ndewura Jakpa palace project, which features Architect Atibila as the consultant and Grandeza Construction Company Limited as the builders, is scheduled for completion in October 2024.

Bawumia has better reputation than Mahama in fight against corruption – Salam Mustapha

The National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salam Mustapha, has underscored the party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s strong anti-corruption stance.

Mustapha argued that Dr. Bawumia’s track record in combating corruption surpasses that of John Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He pointed to Dr. Bawumia’s clean reputation both as a technocrat and a politician, contrasting it with what he sees as a different scenario for Mahama.

Mustapha challenged anyone alleging corruption against Dr. Bawumia to provide evidence, highlighting the absence of such accusations against him.

These comments were made during an interview in the Ashanti Region as part of Mustapha’s National Youth Campaign tour.

The tour aims to engage the NPP Youth Wing in readiness for the upcoming limited voter registration exercise organized by the Electoral Commission.

Additionally, it seeks to rally the youth of the region to support the NPP government in their pursuit of the “break the 8 agenda.”

“How can you conduct a test run on a new railway line without inspection?” – Mahama on train accident

Former President John Mahama has expressed grave concerns over railway safety protocols following a recent accident on the Tema-Mpakadan railway line.

The incident, which involved a new train from Poland during a test run, occurred after a collision with a Hyundai truck left abandoned on the tracks.

The accident, which took place on Thursday, April 18, 2024, has led to the arrest and subsequent six-month imprisonment of the truck driver, Abel Dzidoto, by the Juapong Circuit Court.

In a brief reaction to the development, posted on X, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer questioned the adequacy of pre-operational checks and sought answers on the procedures preceding the test ride.

Mahama emphasized the need for a comprehensive investigation to uncover the reasons behind the apparent lack of due diligence in the railway safety protocols.

“How can you conduct a test run on a new railway line without a track inspection? How long had the vehicle been on the track before the test run? If I were President, I’ll be asking some serious questions,” he stated.

The former President’s comments have sparked a conversation about the importance of stringent safety checks and the need for accountability in the operation of the nation’s railway systems.

Same man with nothing new to offer – Afenyo-Markin advices Ghanaians about Mahama

Majority Leader of Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has voiced criticism against the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), former President John Dramani Mahama.

Afenyo-Markin contends that Mahama’s candidacy lacks innovation and offers nothing new to Ghanaians, citing his track record as former vice president and president.

During a press briefing held in Parliament on April 19, 2024, the Effutu Member of Parliament asserted that Mahama’s leadership stint was marred by inefficiency and unfulfilled promises.

He argued that Mahama’s tenure as both Vice President and President failed to deliver on its pledges, thereby making him an unattractive choice for the electorate.

Afenyo-Markin’s critique underscores the perceived lack of vision for Ghana’s future within Mahama’s candidacy, highlighting concerns over his ability to bring about meaningful change if elected again.

“We have the NDC candidate who has had the opportunity to serve as vice president and president. He’s been vice president for three and a half years before and he’s been president for some four and half years.

“We know his track record. He is the same person with the same old team coming to tell us that they have something to offer but we know their track records.

“In any event, perish the thought, should opportunity smile at him he has only one term, there will be no sense of urgency. And we dare say that from day one that government will be in crisis because those party people will be struggling for who should be the next leader,” he said.

He added, “Ghanaians need a stable government with focus…Dr. Bawumia offers a better future than John Mahama.”

This isn’t the first instance where the Majority Leader has voiced criticism against Mahama.

Just last month, he made similar remarks on the floor of Parliament, highlighting concerns over Mahama’s ability to bring about meaningful change and questioning the novelty of his candidacy.

  • “If I were president, I’d be asking some serious questions” – Mahama on train crash

“If I were president, I’d be asking some serious questions” – Mahama on train crash

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, Former President John Dramani Mahama, has weighed in on the recent incident involving one of the newly acquired modern trains from Poland.

The Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) collided with a parked Hyundai truck during a test run on the Tema-Mpakadan railway line in the Asuogyaman District.

In a post shared on X on Friday, April 19, 2024, Mahama raised several concerns, suggesting negligence on the part of those responsible for conducting the test run.

He questioned why the newly acquired train was being tested on the Tema-Mpakadan railway line, which was also new, without first ensuring that the tracks were properly checked.

“How can you conduct a test run on a new railway line without a track inspection?” he quizzed.

The former president also asked: “How long had the vehicle been on the track before the test run?”

He added that if he were the president, he would hold the people responsible for the incident accountable.

“If I were president, I’d be asking some serious questions,” he added.

    Background:

The Ministry of Railways Development, in a press statement issued on April 18, 2024, confirmed reports that one of the modern trains had been involved in a crash.

It said that the DMU hit a stationary vehicle during the test run, adding that no one was injured.

“At approximately 12:10 pm on Thursday, April 18, 2024, while conducting the test, an incident took place around Km76+100.

The DMU, upon approaching the curve at Km76+100, encountered a stationary vehicle stationed right across the rail track. Despite the immediate application of the emergency braking system, the train was unable to come to a complete stop before colliding with the vehicle,” the statement said.

The ministry added, “The DMU involved has been moved to the workshop for further assessment and necessary repairs.”

Following the incident, proponents of the government and ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), including the Minister for Railway Development, John-Peter Amewu, have made allegations that the incident was orchestrated to sabotage the deployment of the train.

This govt is the biggest political scam in the history of the 4th Republic – Mahama

Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has criticised the current administration led by President Nana Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, labelling it the “biggest political scam” in Ghana’s history.

He made these remarks during his “Building the Ghana We Want” tour in Nalerigu, North East Region, on Tuesday, April 16.

“The Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration is the biggest political scam in the history of the 4th Republic. Ghanaians are called upon again on 7th December 2024 to exercise their mandate and make a choice”, he said.

According to him, he would be amazed to see electorates vote into power the ‘scam’ of a government as Akuffo-Addo’s NPP.

“And after what we have gone through in 7 and a half years, it surprises me [that] anybody will still go to the ballot box and say he’s going to vote for the NPP again,” he said.

Mahama urged Ghanaians to make informed decisions in the upcoming elections on December 7, 2024.

He further added, “Maybe those who have made money under this government, yes, they will go and vote again. But I know that the majority of Ghanaians have seen a reversal in the quality of their lives in these seven and a half years.

Mahama has the creative industry at heart – Dumelo

Renowned actor and farmer John Dumelo emphasized former President John Mahama‘s dedication to Ghana’s Creative Industry.

Dumelo, speaking on behalf of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), revealed that the party would soon unveil comprehensive plans for the sector.

“Former President John has the Creative Industry at heart,” Dumelo affirmed, noting the industry’s significant role during elections due to its influential bloc.

“Former President John has the Creative Industry at heart. Why is it that when it comes to elections they will want to involve a lot of creative people? Because they know we are a powerful block. Once we say we are going this way we do that together. I know for a fact that when our manifesto comes the plans for the Creative Act will be spelled out back to back,” Mr. Dumelo stated.

He hinted at forthcoming manifesto details, promising a thorough outline of strategies for the Creative Act.

Dumelo praised the entrepreneurial spirit of Ghanaian youth, expressing his desire to support their ambitions. “People want to be the boss, people want to own businesses.

I feel the youth these days are more entrepreneurial,” he remarked.

Shifting focus to his contributions to education, Dumelo disclosed offering 200 scholarships across his constituency, with a staggering 4,000 applications received.

“Recently I offered 200 scholarships across the constituency. We had over 4,000 applications. These are a few things I can do for GIMPA, Legon, and UPSA students among others and they are now working in banks, oil and gas companies, and restaurants,” he added.

These efforts, he highlighted, have empowered students from institutions like GIMPA, Legon, and UPSA, leading to placements in diverse sectors such as banking, oil and gas, and hospitality.

If you mean to scrap e-levy, betting tax, do it now -Mahama to Bawumia

National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has urged Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to promptly fulfill his pledges.

Mahama emphasized that Dr. Bawumia, also the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, should demonstrate dedication by initiating the removal of certain taxes without delay.

Addressing members of GUTA, Mahama highlighted the urgency of the matter, urging Dr. Bawumia to take action now rather than postpone until assuming the presidency.

“Tell Bawumia to eliminate the E-Levy and other taxes now, not later,” Mahama emphasized during the meeting.

In a recent statement regarding his presidential ambitions, Dr. Bawumia detailed his intentions to eliminate several taxes, such as the E-Levy, emissions tax, VAT on electricity, and the betting tax.

Additionally, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the significant savings achieved through digitization, highlighting its role in preventing corruption and safeguarding Ghana’s finances.

During the unveiling of LEADing Justice, a strategic framework document outlining the Chief Justice’s vision for Ghana’s Judiciary and Judicial Service, John Mahama lauded the advancements brought about by digitization. He emphasized its role in eradicating phantom pensioners and workers, leading to savings of GHC480 million and GHC356 million respectively.

The Vice President expressed satisfaction with the Chief Justice‘s commitment to digitization, commending Ghana’s rapid progress in this realm. He underscored the pivotal role of digitization in enhancing the judicial system, asserting its significance for the judiciary’s evolution.

Mahama also highlighted the transformative impact of digitization on taxation, citing a substantial increase in the number of individuals possessing Tax Identification Numbers, soaring from four percent to 85 percent following the introduction of the Ghana Card.

Moreover, he noted the effective elimination of fictitious workers within the Controller and Accountant General’s Office through the implementation of the Ghana Card.

The internal strife will stop if you step down – Pastor tells NDC’s Prof. Naana Jane

Leader and founder of the Hezekiah Prayer Ministry, Apostle Kwabena Adjei, has advised Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the former President John Mahama’s running mate, to consider stepping down from her current position.

Appearing on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, the man of God and numerologist suggested that Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s resignation could help quell the internal strife within the party.

While acknowledging that his advice was subject to Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s discretion, Apostle Adjei emphasized the significance of her potential resignation.

He referenced recent public comments by Prof. Kwesi Ahwoi, suggesting that Prof. Opoku-Agyemang should prepare for the presidency, implying a deeper significance to the situation.

Apostle Adjei cautioned that if the NDC maintains the ticket of John Mahama and Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is likely to emerge as the next president.

He proposed Leslie Tamakloe as a more favorable candidate for the NDC, citing divine guidance.

However, Apostle Adjei also conveyed ominous warnings, citing prophecies suggesting potential harm to Prof. Opoku-Agyemang and others associated with the current ticket.

He emphasised the need for the NDC to heed divine guidance to secure victory in the elections.

After that, it won’t take long, and then the professor will also follow. That is why I am advising her to step down as the running mate for John Dramani Mahama,” he added.

What Mr. Ahwoi said has been orchestrated in the spiritual realm, and so if you refuse to listen to the advice and go ahead to remain in the running maze, then you bear the consequences.”

Mahama: Ghana even dirtier with ‘failed’ Sanitation Ministry; pledges a dissolution when elected

In the event that he is re-elected and takes office in 2025, former president John Dramani Mahama has declared his intention to dissolve the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources.

On April 4, 2024, Mahama gave a public speech at the Wisconsin International University College in Accra. Despite the ministry’s existence, he expressed unhappiness with its efficacy, noting growing levels of filth throughout the nation.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, Mahama, highlighted the need for lower government spending and questioned the ministry’s purpose, saying that Ghana looked dirtier now than it did before the ministry was established.

“We will close down the Ministry of Sanitation, one to reduce expenditure and two, I don’t see any use. Accra, our country is dirtier than when there was no Ministry of Sanitation.

“Indeed, this country was cleaner when our country was under local government than as a stand-alone ministry and so we’ll close down that ministry and we’ll take the sanitation schedule back to local government, because we want to reduce government expenditure,” he said.

Mahama proposed consolidating several other underperforming ministries, including the Aviation and Railways Ministries, into the Transport Ministry.

“It is not only the Sanitation Ministry, in Transport, Aviation and Railways, we are going to close them down and send them back to the Transport Ministry. We are going to combine Communications and Information again. So, we want to reduce the number of ministries.

“With cleanliness, we think that it’s the duty of the district assemblies. Every assembly has an obligation to make sure that its district is clean and so we must decentralise sanitation to the district level,” he added.

  • I’ll uphold a higher level of accountability to Ghanaians than Mahama – Bawumia

I’ll uphold a higher level of accountability to Ghanaians than Mahama – Bawumia

The ruling New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has promised to uphold a superior level of accountability to the Ghanaian people compared to his main opponent, John Mahama.

Dr. Bawumia argued that Mr. Mahama would not be as accountable since he would not seek re-election, whereas he, as a first-time presidential candidate, expressed his dedication to being more accountable if elected, citing the opportunity to seek re-election and face the electorate again.

“Apart from my proven track record as vice-president, hard work, credibility and vision for the future of Ghana, another reason I should be voted for is that I will be more accountable to the people of Ghana than John Mahama.

“As president, I will be more accountable because I will have another opportunity to seek the people’s mandate after 2024. Mahama has just one term and will not come back to Ghanaians to seek re-elections so he will not be accountable,” Dr Bawumia said.

He further emphasised his commitment to accountability by highlighting that as president, he would have another chance to seek the people’s mandate after 2024, unlike Mahama who only has one term.

Dr. Bawumia stressed the significance of electing a leader with credibility and a proven record in addressing challenges and fighting corruption, asserting his candidacy as a problem solver and a staunch advocate against corruption based on his policies as Vice President.

“Ghana needs problem solvers, generational thinkers and people with innovative ideas.

“I am a problem solver and a generational thinker with innovative ideas. I have a solid track record as vice-president to prove it,” he added.

Mahama represents the past and I represent the next chapter – Bawumia

New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, didn’t mince words when discussing his rival, John Mahama, from the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Dr. Bawumia strongly criticized Mahama’s past tenure as President, labelling it as one of the worst in Ghana’s history.

Pointing out what he sees as significant shortcomings in Mahama’s leadership, Dr. Bawumia highlighted issues like corruption and economic challenges that he believes were not adequately addressed during Mahama’s presidency.

In contrast, Dr. Bawumia showcased his own record as Vice President since 2017, portraying himself as a capable problem solver and promising a forward-thinking approach if elected as President.

He emphasised the urgent need for a leader who can harness Ghana’s potential for development and ensure accountability in governance.

“Former President Mahama has been President before, but what was his track record? He failed.  He failed to tackle corruption and many problems. Economically, if you look at all the economic data in the 4th Republic, Mahama has been the worst President.

“John Mahama doesn’t represent change because he was there as President, and he has been rejected twice in 2016 and 2020. I have not been President before, and my record as Vice President is there for all to see. John Mahama represents the past and I represent the next chapter and future of our country,” Bawumia stated.

I am sorry – Kwesi Ahwoi apologises to Mahama and Prof Opoku-Agyemang

Former Minister for Agriculture, Kwesi Ahwoi, has issued an apology to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Mahama, for his recent comments made at a reception for Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.

Ahwoi expressed regret over the misunderstanding caused by his remarks, clarifying that he never intended to suggest that John Mahama should not complete his full term if elected in the 2024 general elections.

In a statement, Ahwoi acknowledged that he misspoke during the event and accepted criticisms, though he believed some critiques were based on a misinterpretation of his words.

He emphasised that during the reception, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang corrected the impression his statement created, affirming her confidence in John Mahama’s victory and full term in office.

Ahwoi acknowledged that his comments overshadowed the positive atmosphere of the event and offered an unreserved apology to John Mahama, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, and the NDC leadership and members.

He called for unity within the party, urging everyone to focus on supporting John Mahama as the NDC’s flagbearer in the upcoming December 2024 elections to bring positive change to the country.

    Kwesi Ahwoi letter:

I have taken notice of the unfortunate controversy that has arisen as a result of a comment I made at a reception organized last Thursday by the Churchstreet group of NDC faithful for Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Running Mate to our esteemed flagbearer, H.E. John Dramani Mahama.

I sincerely regret the wrong impression that my comment has created. Indeed, it was not my intention, and never will it be my intention to pray that H.E. John Mahama does not serve his full four-year term when he wins the 2024 general elections.

I concede that I misspoke on the occasion. I accept the criticisms in good faith, even though some of the criticisms arise out of a deliberate misrepresentation of my statement.

Indeed, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang in response to my toast, pointed out the erroneous impression created by my statement and was categorical in asserting that she was certain that H.E. John Mahama will win the 2024 general elections and serve his full four-year term.

It is unfortunate that my statement appears to have taken the shine off what was otherwise a cheerful and light-hearted occasion.

I hereby render an unreserved and unqualified apology to H.E. John Dramani Mahama, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the leadership and rank and file of the great NDC.

Comrades and friends, let us put this unfortunate incident behind us and unite behind our flag-bearer, the visionary Nation Builder, to rescue our beloved country in the December 2024 elections.

    SIGNED.

  • NDC upset over Kwesi Ahwoi’s comments suggesting Mahama could ‘die’ for Naana to become president

NDC upset over Kwesi Ahwoi’s comments suggesting Mahama could ‘die’ for Naana to become president

Senior member of National Democratic Congress (NDC) and former Minister of Interior (2013-2014), Kwesi Ahwoi, aged 77, has drawn criticism from within the NDC, particularly the pro-Mahama faction, for his remarks implying that the late President John Evans Atta Mills’ fate could potentially repeat itself with John Dramani Mahama if the NDC wins the presidential election in December 2024.

What was intended to be a happy event at the Ahwois’ office on Church Street, Labone, to celebrate Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyeman’s renomination as John Mahama’s running mate left many guests aghast, with some reportedly leaving the scene prematurely?

In proposing a toast to Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyeman, 72, Kwesi Ahwoi stated confidently that she would be the first woman Vice President of Ghana. A harmless message, it seemed.

However, he proceeded to show how he went further to urge her to hold herself in readiness to be president since “anything can happen,” as it indeed happened when John Mahama took over with the passing of Professor Evan Atta-Mills, which allowed Vice President John Mahama to be sworn in to finish the unexpired term in 2012.

“John Mahama was not ready to be president at the time but nature schemed things in such a way that President Mills had to give way to John Mahama. Anything can happen, so Naana, be ever prepared; as your motto says, anything can happen and you can become the President of the Republic of Ghana,” Kwesi Ahwoi said, in a video that has since gone viral.

During Mr Ahwoi’s comments, a female voice could be heard in the background saying, “No, no, don’t pray for death!” in reaction to what was being said.

Ahwoi’s recent remarks have stirred speculation on social media regarding the health of former President John Mahama, who is set to contest the presidency for the fourth time in December.

Former President John Atta Mills, who battled throat cancer, passed away on 24 July 2012, at the age of 68, after serving as president since 2009. His vice president assumed office and successfully contested the December 2012 general elections.

Historical records show that the influential Ahwoi brothers (Ato, Kwamena, and Kwesi) played a pivotal role in persuading President Jerry John Rawlings to select Prof Mills as his running mate in 1996. Ato Ahwoi’s office on Church Street, Labone, was regarded as a center of influence during the Mills administration.

Naana Poku-Agyemang, whose candidacy was backed by the Ahwois, is seen as a continuation and expansion of that influential legacy.

If Mr. John Mahama wins in 2024, he can only serve a single four-year term, setting the stage for a potentially intense battle for his successor within the NDC.

Interestingly, the Pro-Jane faction, led by the influential Ahwoi brothers, promoted Naana Poku-Agyemang’s candidacy, citing her age and perceived lack of ambition as factors making her the safest choice for the NDC’s running mate in 2024.

Mills had to give way for Mahama, Naana, be prepared – Kwesi Ahwoi’s ‘chilling’ words to Prof Opoku-Agyemang

A significant moment at the nomination party for Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang took an unexpected turn when Kwesi Ahwoi, a founding member of the National Democratic Congress, offered some advice to John Dramani Mahama’s running mate for the 2024 elections.

During the event held at the Ahwois’ office in Labone, as reported by Asaase Radio, Kwesi Ahwoi encouraged Prof Opoku-Agyemang to prepare herself for the possibility of assuming the presidency, citing the circumstances that led to John Mahama’s presidency in 2012 as a precedent.

In a video that quickly went viral, Kwesi Ahwoi proposed a toast, reminiscing about how John Mahama unexpectedly assumed the presidency after President Mills stepped aside. He advised Prof Opoku-Agyemang to remain vigilant and ready to take on the role of president if fate were to intervene similarly.

“John Mahama was not ready to be president at the time but nature schemed things in such a way that President Mills had to give way to John Mahama. Anything can happen, so Naana, be ever prepared as your motto says, anything can happen and you can become the President of the Republic of Ghana,” Kwesi Ahwoi said.

The National Democratic Congress officially confirmed Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as the running mate for the party’s flagbearer for the 2024 election on March 7, 2024.

In a statement issued by its General Secretary, Fifi Kwetey, the NDC expressed pride in presenting a strong team of Mahama and Prof. Opoku-Agyemang for the upcoming presidential elections. The party highlighted Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s vast experience and emphasized its commitment to empowering women.

“Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang is a distinguished academic and leader renowned for her dedication to education and public service. Having served as Minister for Education and as the first female Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, she has emerged as a trailblazer for women in leadership across Ghana,” the statement read.

The nomination of Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang reflects the NDC’s dedication to inclusivity, diversity, and the empowerment of women in leadership roles. With her extensive qualifications and experience, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang brings valuable knowledge and expertise to the NDC’s presidential ticket.

‘There was never a time in my govt where we were unable to pay monthly allowance’ – Mahama

Former President and National Democratic Congress (NDC) Flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has condemned the failure of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s administration to promptly pay allowances owed to National Service Personnel in the public sector.

According to Mahama, the delay in payment, which began in November 2023, has caused significant financial hardship for service personnel.

During a recent tour on March 22, Mahama reflected on his presidency, noting that under his leadership, service personnel allowances were consistently paid on time.

He expressed surprise and disappointment at the current situation, questioning the competence of the ruling government to meet the basic needs of the people.

Speaking to the crowd in the local dialect, Mahama criticised the government’s performance, particularly its inability to fulfil its obligations.

“There was never a time in my government where we were unable to pay monthly allowance, but today for five months, they are unable to pay the service personnel, and the money is not so much. About 600 cedis or 700 cedis. What kind of government is this? Nothing seems to be going well. The economy was bad and we are wallowing in debt, and the little amount due these personnel, you are equally unable to pay,” Mahama said.

Meanwhile, National Service personnel nationwide have indicated their intention to go on strike to demand the payment of their allowances.

‘Okada’ operations remain prohibited – NRSA

The Director-General of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Ing. David Osafo Adonteng, has emphasized that the operations of ‘Okada’ remain illegal, countering recent promises made by John Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Mahama pledged to legalise commercial motorbike operations, commonly known as ‘okada,’ during an engagement with residents of Worawora in the Biakoye Constituency of the Oti Region on Tuesday, March 19, 2024.

“If we come into power, we will legalise okada business. We will train you on how to go about the business, being able to ride the motorbikes alone does not make you a commercial rider. We will register all of you so your operation can be regulated,” Mahama told his supporters.

Speaking at the launch of the 2024 Road Safety Easter Campaign, Ing. Adonteng reiterated the current legal stance, stating that using motorcycles and tricycles for commercial purposes is prohibited by existing laws.

“The law is what we are going with. In Ghana, the regulations prohibit motorcycles or tricycles for commercial purposes. You can only use them for delivery or courier services, as acceptable by law and enforced by the National Road Safety Authority and the Ghana Police Service,” stated Ing. Adonteng.

He further highlighted ongoing efforts to engage motor riders, provide training, and sensitise them to reduce their contribution to road fatalities.

However, he cautioned against promises of regularisation until legal provisions are altered.

“We have recently been engaging some motor riders and some of them have formed some associations and I don’t think it is called Okada Riders Association. We have found a strategy of engaging them, training them, sensitizing them, and we have seen some significant reductions in terms of their contribution to the fatalities stock.”

“If someone says he will regularize their activities or I will accept, let us get there but for now, we are enforcing what has been provided by the Road Traffic Regulations LI 2180,” Ing Adonteng added.

There’s nothing exciting about her candidature – Nana Akomea on Prof Naana Jane

Former Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akomea, has expressed his opinion on former President John Mahama’s choice of Prof. Naana Opoku-Agyeman as his running mate ahead of the 2024 elections.

Even though she has a good profile and doesn’t seem to have stepped on any toes in the political landscape, not many are excited about her candidature.

Speaking on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo Morning Show on March 13, 2024, Nana Ankomea noted that the Professor’s retention as John Mahama’s running mate ads no excitement or makes no difference in John Mahama’s campaign and road to the Jubilee House journey.

He said, “the woman the NDC has appointed as flagbearer is a good person but listening to the concerns of people, there is really no excitement about her candidature. To me, it’s not exciting; it brings no excitement When she was introduced in 2020, there was some kind of excitement because everyone thought she would introduce something new, but she couldn’t even deliver.”.

He added that “her first ticket as running-mate in 2020 came with some exhilaration, as many were hopeful of a change and some spice and ‘ difference’ from her but “even in her own region, the Central Region. So we hope this time she adds a touch and helps NDC’s bid but look at her, she’s a good woman so let’s wait and watch how she’s able to spice up this year’s campaign.

In any case, I’m happy about her candidature, but I doubt she would really bring anything new to John Mahama’s campaign” he added

Former President John Dramani Mahama announced Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as his running mate for the 2024 elections on February 28, 2024.

This marks the second time Prof. Opoku-Agyemang has been chosen for this position, having previously partnered with Mahama in the 2020 elections.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has confirmed her nomination, highlighting their dedication to inclusivity, diversity, and the promotion of women in leadership roles. Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, a former Minister of Education, brings extensive experience to the NDC’s presidential ticket.

Mahama unveils plan to tackle Accra’s water crisis

Leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has unveiled a plan to improve water access in Accra due to recent shortages caused by the city’s growing population.

Speaking at his Building Ghana Tour at the regional house of chiefs, Mahama stressed the importance of taking proactive steps to deal with the urgent water problem.

Highlighting the challenges faced by Accra because of rapid urbanization, Mahama emphasized the necessity of planning ahead to manage water resources.

He pointed out the efforts made during Professor Mills’ and his own administrations to increase water capacity but noted a lack of progress in recent years.

Mahama outlined his strategy for addressing the water crisis, pledging to prioritize expanding water supply when he assumes office.

He highlighted the absence of such expansion in Accra’s water supply over the past eight years.

“Between Professor Mills’ time and my time, we added 40 million gallons of water to Accra’s water supply. In the last eight years, there has not been a single drop expansion in Accra’s water supply. So why do you expect that the water will be enough? This is a city that is growing. And so after we added 40 million gallons, at least in eight years, you should have added another 20 million gallons. We have started planning ahead already that when we come into office, we are going to increase the water supply to Accra.”

  • John Mahama pledge support for Sesame farmers when he becomes president

John Mahama pledge support for Sesame farmers when he becomes president

Former President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to implement a system of minimum guaranteed prices for cereals and legumes if he is elected.

This initiative aims to stabilize food costs by allowing the private sector to collaborate with the National Buffer Stock to manage surplus food supplies.

Mahama emphasized that this strategy would enable the Buffer Stock to store excess food during periods of low prices and release it when prices rise, ensuring a steady food supply while providing fair compensation to farmers for their crops.

He made these remarks during a farmers’ forum in Tumu as part of his ‘Build the Ghana We Want tour’ in the Sissala area.

“I know some of you have started the production of sesame, which is a high-value crop. Such farmers will be supported with small loans so that you can expand and export.”

Additionally, former President Mahama detailed essential measures to bolster the agricultural industry, emphasizing the dedication to supplying farming inputs.

He encouraged the establishment of farmer cooperatives to facilitate access to necessary assistance. Mahama reassured farmers that the farmer service center inaugurated in Gwollu in 2016 would be reinstated in all districts nationwide.

These centers would serve as comprehensive hubs, offering a range of resources from fertilizers, seeds, and machinery to a micro-credit program enabling farmers to secure loans.

“I will do something about the roads and the bridge especially from Bawiesebelle to Duu and the other areas to ensure that you cart your food products to market centres safely,” he assured.

He further remarked that due to the ineffective execution of the current government’s One Village One Dam (1V1D) initiative, which was inadequately planned, the NDC administration would construct genuine dams capable of retaining water to support agricultural endeavors for both crops and livestock.

Addressing inquiries regarding the discontinued cotton industry, he pledged that if elected, they would rejuvenate the cotton ginnery and provide farming inputs to enable the government to purchase produce from farmers.

“We have a ginnery here in Tumu, Bolgatanga and Tamale and I will bring back cotton production,” he said.

The former president also tackled issues within the education sector, pledging to eliminate licensure examinations and integrate teacher trainee licensing into their final year exams at the Colleges.

Regarding agribusiness, Mr. Mahama commended and commended the efforts of Kedan, a maize processing factory in Tumu, and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting Kedan and other agribusiness ventures in alignment with his 24-hour economy pledge.

Mr. Mohammed Bataglia, the NDC Parliamentary candidate for the Sissala East, described John Mahama as a man of integrity and a man true to his word, emphasizing that he would not resort to deceit to gain power. Mr. Razak Mahama Navri, the Sissala East constituency chairman of the NDC, urged unity and pledged to exert maximum effort to wrest the Parliamentary seat from the ruling NPP.

Acknowledge the existence of ‘dumsor’; release a well-defined load-shedding timetable -Mahama to Akufo-Addo

Former President and National Democratic Congress (NDC) Flagbearer, John Mahama, is urging the government to confront the escalating power outages, commonly referred to as ‘dumsor,’ by unveiling a transparent and well-defined load-shedding timetable.

Recent electrical disruptions across the country have prompted Mahama’s call for openness and accountability.

Addressing the issue during his “Building the Ghana We Want” Tour in the Upper West region, Mahama emphasised that Ghanaians are well aware of the ongoing load shedding but lack a clear schedule.

Drawing upon his experience as a former president, Mahama noted that he kept the public informed during his tenure about challenges and the corresponding measures taken to address them.

Expressing concern, Mahama stated, “When I was president, if things were not going well, I told the people of Ghana that things are not going well and this is what we are trying to do about it. I think my honesty was one of my major problems because I didn’t think I should fool my people.”

He highlighted the current administration’s lack of transparency in addressing the power issues, asserting that a failure to provide a detailed timetable for load shedding leaves the public in the dark about when to expect outages.

The seasoned politician explained, “Today, every day you sleep and the lights go off, and we know that they are shedding load. They have a problem with generation. Some generation assets are down. They have a problem with paying for gas. They have a problem with paying for fuel, so every day they are shedding between 280 and 480 megawatts of power, but they will not give us a timetable and say you will be off today, this one will be off tomorrow because that is what Ghanaians know as dumsor.”

Mahama’s plea underscores the need for a clear strategy to manage the ongoing power challenges and provide citizens with essential information about the timing and duration of outages, effectively addressing the nation’s concerns surrounding ‘dumsor.’

  • If the driver has no experience; what difference will the driver’s mate make – Mahama to Bawumia

If the driver has no experience; what difference will the driver’s mate make – Mahama to Bawumia

Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, passionately emphasized the crucial importance of experience over inexperience in the upcoming presidential election.

Drawing a vivid metaphor, Mahama responded to the recent remarks made by the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, comparing his role to that of a driver and a driver’s mate.

While delivering a speech on February 7, Dr. Bawumia positioned himself as a driver’s mate seeking promotion to the driver’s seat, urging Ghanaians to vote for him in the upcoming election.

However, Mahama was quick to question this proposition, asserting that if the current driver has failed to navigate the road properly and adhere to traffic regulations, promoting the mate might not yield better results.

Mahama, a former president, urged the public to consider his experience as a former driver, emphasising that the nation cannot afford to hand over the metaphorical “vehicle” to an inadequately trained driver’s mate. He stated, “If the driver couldn’t drive well, how much less the driver’s mate?”

“And so on 7th December, the driver is going and if the driver hasn’t driven properly these seven years. We are not going to hand over the car to the driver’s mate. If even the driver couldn’t drive well, how much less the driver’s mate?

“We all know what we’ve gone through these past seven and half years. The opportunity has come for us to rescue our nation from the incompetence and inept clueless administration of Nana Akufo-Addo and his driver’s mate”.

John Mahama advised that his experience as a former driver should be preferred over that of a poorly-trained driver’s mate.

“So I leave you with one final question. If you have a car and the driver didn’t drive well and you are taking your car, will you give it to your former experienced driver or the careless driver’s mate? I will give it to the former experienced driver”, John Mahama stated.

During the two-day tour of the Upper West Region, Mahama engaged with the public, allowing them to voice their concerns and opinions.

He reiterated his commitment to measured promises, particularly regarding the calls for enhanced remuneration by public sector workers.

As the election date approaches, the debate between experience and change continues, with Mahama positioning himself as the experienced hand that Ghana needs to navigate the challenges ahead.

The electorate eagerly awaits the unfolding political developments in the lead-up to the crucial decision on December 7th.

Flashback: Stan Dogbe ‘cries’ over attacks on NDC after defeat in 2016 general elections

Presidential staffer, Stan Dogbe has expressed discontent over the wave of criticism directed towards him and other government officials following their party’s significant loss in the recent general election.

The ruling party appears to be experiencing internal turmoil in the aftermath of the defeat on December 7, with some factions pointing fingers at young appointees like Mr. Dogbe for the electoral setback.

Montie FM, known as a staunch supporter of the ruling party, launched scathing attacks on individuals they believe contributed to the party’s defeat during a programme on Friday.

Panellists on the show specifically named John Dumelo, Stan Dogbe, and Edward Omane as government appointees whose actions or inactions led to public dissatisfaction with the outgoing president.

Mr Dogbe took to his Facebook page on Friday to address the issue, saying, “We all know them—the people who engage in these acts, their sponsors, and in some cases, the basis of these actions. The Lord does not leave his own. Despite the scheming and many deliberate acts, I have survived the 8 years, painfully though, because I have had to remain quiet while dirt and lies were thrown at me and my silence led to people believing what they hear.

According to him, his silence over the last eight years in the face of relentless attacks on his person, was not a sign of foolishness or cowardice, but the respect we have had for my bosses, the system, the party, and my colleague.”.

    Below is Stan’s lamentations:

    “The Lord is with us.

Let them and all their collaborators know that the silence of some of us over the last 8 years is not a sign of foolishness or cowardice, but the respect we have had for my bosses, the system, the party, and colleagues.

We all know them—those who engage in these acts, their sponsors, and, in some cases, the basis of these actions. The Lord does not leave his own. Despite the scheming and many deliberate acts, I have survived the 8 years, painfully though, because I have had to remain quiet while dirt and lies were thrown at me and my silence led to people believing what they hear.

These are not anti-political actions, but purely internal. My joy is that I have worked with all my heart, all my strength and all that I have. I sacrificed for a man I so much admired, JM, and spent my days and nights working for a man I call Daddy, a man I have known for years, a man I loved and still love and will forever love, and who gave me a chance to work for him, and I am happy that I distinguished myself within the remit of my work.

Just as I have shared in the past, in the successes of our administrations, I also share in their failures, if any.

  • Flashback: We will donate it to charity – Bugri Naabu on Mahama’s alleged ‘car bribe’

Flashback: We will donate it to charity – Bugri Naabu on Mahama’s alleged ‘car bribe’

Last year, there were allegations of a bribery case involving President Mahama and Bugri Naabu.

Daniel Bugri Naabu, the Northern Regional Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), has indicated his intention to donate a vehicle reportedly given to him by former President John Mahama as a bribe, to charity.

“… I think we are going to give it to charity. We are not going to use that car,” he told Joy FM’s Elton Brobbey on Tuesday, January 24.

Mr Naabu said late last year that he did not need the controversial GHS500,000 and cars doled out to him by Mr Mahama.

“What is GHS 500,000? What is a car? Me, when I started buying cars, expensive cars, John Mahama was a student. He was a student at Ghana College,” Mr Naabu had said when he received some regional and constituency executives of the All People’s Congress at his residence in Tamale in December 2016.

In December last year, at a press conference by then NPP flag bearer Nana Akufo-Addo’s spokesperson, Mustapha Hamid, the party alleged that Mr Mahama and his brother, Ibrahim, in October of the same year, attempted buying Mr Naabu so he would resign from the NPP and launch an acerbic tribal campaign against Mr Akufo-Addo by painting him as a “hater of northerners”.

“He [Bugri Naabu] was supposed to resign from the NPP, damage Akufo-Addo as an anti-northern person, a rabid hater of northerners, and, in turn, they were going to give him: a brand new V6 Mitsubishi vehicle, a brand new V8 Land Cruiser [and] GHS3.3m.

“Bugri Naabu is owed by government to the tune of GHS247,000 from road contracts that he has done which government has not been paying for several years. They promised to pay that money instantly and then on the spot, they brought him GHS 500,000 cash in GHS50 notes. Ibrahim Mahama dropped it right in front of him [Bugri Naabu].

“It’s terribly sad. This country is in serious trouble, we need to rescue this country from serious trouble. The presidency has been so depraved, so muddied, so dirtied that I tell you in all sincerity as a Ghanaian that I feel terribly sad as a Ghanaian,” Mr Hamid said.

He continued: “And then they gave the money to Bugri Naabu and he took the money and left, it was a Friday, 28th of October 2016, so the very next day was a Saturday and Bugri Naabu found the one Prudential Bank that he knew would be opened at that time; that Abossey Okai branch of Prudential Bank and then he went and deposited the money in his account.

His account number is 0090985590013, account name is Daniel Bugri Naabu. And out of that money, immediately Ibrahim Mahama told Bugri Naabu to take GHS50,000 out of it and give it to Alhaji Awal – the go-between; the man who facilitated the meeting and that they will replace the GHS50,000 later. A few days later at Bugri Naabu’s daughter’s funeral in Tamale, true to word, President Mahama sent a high-powered delegation to Bugri Naabu’s daughter’s funeral, led by Deputy Chief of Staff Kenneth Wujangi.

There was Dr Mustapha Ahmed in that delegation, there was Ibrahim Mahama himself in that delegation and then the president went and gave Bugri Naabu an additional GHS 10,000. In other words, a donation of GHS 10,000 was made on behalf of the president and Ibrahim Mahama himself gave GHS 20,000 as funeral donation.”

He said days later “… they delivered the brand new Mitsubishi V6 – it is actually parked in this yard now – when we finish, journalists can go and have a look at it. Now these are the original documents of the Mitsubishi V6. This is Bugri Naabu’s picture that they have put on it. 2 November 2016 was when the change of ownership was done but this vehicle was imported in August of 2016 and it originally was imported and is owned by a company called Malin Investment Company Limited.

So we ourselves did a check with the Registrar General to find out who are the owners of Malin Investment Company Limited and the two directors of Malin Investment are one Hawa Hayifi Ayi Mahama and Frank Nuhu Alormator (Frank Alor). And Frank Alor everybody knows is the personal assistant to President Mahama. … Hawa Mahama, I leave you to go and find out [who she is] … but I’m sure you can infer that she is a sister of the President but you can find that out. But what we are sure of [which] everybody knows is, Frank Alor, who is a personal assistant to President Mahama.

I’m sure all of you journalists know him. So they jointly own Malin Investment which is the company that originally imported the vehicle which they have given to Daniel Bugri Naabu to bribe him to destroy Akufo-Addo and make sure that northerners hate him and that he doesn’t get a vote in the north. Ladies and gentlemen, we cannot run a country like that.

You recall that just a few days ago they brought Harruna Attah who they’ve given an ambassadorial position in Namibia to lie through his teeth that Akufo-Addo had told him that no northerner can ever lead our party. Now this revelation should tell you that it is just a carefully orchestrated scheme. When I refuted it, I’m sure a lot of you were saying: ‘Um, is it really true that Akufo-Addo didn’t say that?’ But now it is very clear that there’s an ethnic, ethnocentric, tribal agenda that is meant to incite hatred against a good man who has been fighting all his life for the Ghanaian project, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Allah shall fight for Akufo-Addo.”

Following the allegation, General Secretary of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, said only fools will believe that Mr Mahama and his brother attempted bribing Mr Naabu.

NDC to announce Mahama’s running mate today

National Democratic Congress (NDC) is set to unveil its vice presidential candidate for the 2024 general elections, accompanying presidential nominee John Dramani Mahama, by February 29, 2024.

This disclosure came from the party’s National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, during an interview with GhanaWeb’s Daniel Oduro on the Election Desk on February 28, 2024.

Gyamfi mentioned in the interview that both the party and the public should anticipate a formal announcement later in the week, following the finalisation of the decision by the council of elders and the national executive committee of the NDC.

“The rank and file of the party and the general public should be expecting to hear a formal announcement tomorrow when the decision is eventually finalised, subject to the advice of the Council of Elders and the national executive committee.

“I am very optimistic that this is a decision that would resonate not just with our grassroots but also with the entire nation,” he stated.

He added that the flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, had been thinking and consulting on the matter for a long time and that he had made his choice.

He said that the flagbearer, however, needed to seek the formal advice of the major stakeholders for approval before the announcement.

“The flagbearer has been thinking and consulting on this matter. He is ready with his consultation, and he has a choice.

But as the constitution and systems of our party require, he needs to seek formally the advice of the Council of Elders and present the same to the National Council of the party, which is the second highest decision-making body in the party, for advice before the same is announced,” he stated.

“… The candidate is very clear in his mind as to who he wants to be his running mate to complement him and deliver his vision,” he added.

    John Mahama selects running mate

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is abuzz with anticipation as the Council of Elders prepares to gather on Thursday, March 7, 2024, to deliberate on the running mate nominee presented by Presidential Candidate John Dramani Mahama. The announcement, made by Fifi Kwetey, the General Secretary of the NDC, signals a pivotal moment in the party’s internal decision-making process.

According to sources within the NDC, Mahama’s submission aligns with Section 45 of the party’s Constitution, which mandates the presentation of a nominee to the Council of Elders for consideration. This procedural step underscores the party’s commitment to democratic principles and internal consultation.

Speculation has been rife within NDC circles regarding the potential selection of a female running mate—a departure from past norms. Even before Mahama’s formal nomination, there had been a groundswell of calls urging him to consider appointing a woman as his running mate, echoing sentiments from previous elections.

Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, Mahama’s running mate in the preceding elections, remains a prominent figure in discussions surrounding the upcoming decision. However, with the Council of Elders set to convene followed by a subsequent meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC), the final decision on the running mate for the December elections remains uncertain.

The forthcoming gatherings of the Council of Elders and NEC are poised to shape the trajectory of the NDC’s electoral strategy, with Mahama’s running mate selection carrying significant implications for the party’s prospects in the upcoming polls. As party members and supporters await further developments, all eyes are on the deliberations set to unfold within the inner circles of the NDC leadership.

“Police discrediting DCOP Waabu’s comments on election security strange” – John Mahama

The 2024 flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has expressed astonishment at the police administration’s decision to distance itself from DCOP Gabriel Prince Waabu’s comments on election security.

Speaking at the Ahmadiya Muslim Mission’s centenary celebration in Gomoa Pomadze, Central Region, Mahama found it strange for the Service to disassociate itself from a statement of fact and even consider subjecting DCOP Waabu to internal discipline.

DCOP Gabriel Prince Waabu, Director General in Charge of Research, had made comments during the launch of Joy FM’s 2024 elections coverage, stating, “We’re not maybe going to involve the military… It’s going to be only the Police, the Prisons, Fire, and then Immigration that are going to conduct this election. They are going to support us; it is our baby.”

Responding to concerns about violent incidents involving the elections security taskforce, DCOP Waabu clarified that elections are internal matters within the police’s clear-cut mandate. However, this did not sit well with the police administration, which apologized to the military.

John Mahama described the police response as unacceptable and emphasized the need for security services to maintain neutrality for a peaceful election.

He defended DCOP Waabu’s assertion that election security is the primary responsibility of the police service. Mahama emphasized that the police decide on inviting sister security services to participate in the National, Regional, and District Election Security Taskforce.

Addressing the role of the military, Mahama highlighted that the Ghana Armed Forces are called upon when the police cannot handle a situation.

He stressed that election security is not part of the immediate mandate of the military, stating, “The military is not supposed to be in polling centers or collation centers but deployed to a safe location when the police cannot handle a situation.”

“My dear friend” – Mahama on death of Access Bank founder

Former President John Dramani Mahama has expressed his deep sorrow over the tragic passing of Herbert Wigwe, the Group Chief Executive Officer of Access Holdings.

The Nigerian entrepreneur lost his life in a helicopter crash on Friday, February 9, 2024, in California, USA, along with five others, including his wife and son.

In a Facebook post dated February 12, Mahama shared his struggle to come to grips with the heartbreaking news of Wigwe’s death, whom he affectionately referred to as a brother.

“It’s difficult coming to terms with the tragic accident that claimed the lives of my dear friend Herbert Wigwe, his wife and son, along with three others.

“My sympathies go out to the families of those who perished in the tragic accident and our thoughts are with Herbert’s surviving children and the families of all who died,” he wrote.

Mahama reflected on his relationship with the late finance expert, mentioning that he first met him in 2009 during the establishment of the Ghana branch of Access Ghana.

“I had the privilege of knowing Herbert more closely in 2009 during his setting up of the Access Bank branch in Ghana. He came across as a brilliant and determined young man who was on a swift upward trajectory. This is evident in the growth of Access Bank into a widely recognised global brand.

“Herbert’s legacy in the finance and banking sectors will always be remembered. RIP,” Mr Mahama added.

  • John Mahama picks Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as running mate

John Mahama picks Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as running mate

Former President John Dramani Mahama has reportedly chosen Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as his running mate for the 2024 presidential election, according to Asaase Radio.

Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, who previously served as the Minister of Education during Mahama’s presidency from 2013 to 2017, was also his running mate in the 2020 general election, which the NDC lost.

This decision, if true, signals the NDC’s commitment to maintaining a vice presidential candidate from the Central Region, continuing a trend that started in 2012.

This marks the second time in the history of the NDC that a running mate has been chosen consecutively. The NDC, since the beginning of the Fourth Republic, has traditionally had different running mates for each election.

John Mahama, in 2012, ran with Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur and won, while in 2016, the same pair lost the election. In 2020, following Amissah-Arthur’s death, Mahama selected Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, resulting in another electoral defeat.

The NDC, according to Asaase, initially considered potential candidates from three regions—Ashanti, Central, and Eastern. However, the nod ultimately went to Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang from the Central Region.

Among the notable figures considered were Julius Debrah, a former chief of staff from the Eastern Region, and Kwame Awuah-Darko, a politician and entrepreneur from the Ashanti Region.

While there are differing opinions within the NDC about the political impact of retaining Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as the running mate, the decision reflects a strategic choice in the party’s pursuit of the December 2024 general election victory.

  • EC’s proposal for a change in election date not in good faith – NDC

EC’s proposal for a change in election date not in good faith – NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC), led by John Mahama, has declared that the party will not back the plan to move the 2024 election date from December to November.

“We [NDC] do not believe that this is being proposed in good faith,” he said.

Addressing the minority caucus meeting in Ho on Saturday, February 10, 2024, Mahama asserted that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was exhibiting signs of anticipating defeat and had initiated efforts to discredit the upcoming elections.

He cited the Electoral Commission’s sudden proposal to change the election date from December 7 to November 7, despite not demonstrating readiness for the general elections, as one such attempt.

Mahama highlighted the evident lack of preparedness displayed during the District Assembly elections in December of the previous year. He emphasized the presence of fundamental errors and significant logistical deficiencies, indicating the Electoral Commission’s inability to effectively manage electoral processes.

Expressing confidence, Mahama stated that all indications suggested a decisive victory for the NDC in the 2024 elections. He asserted that the people of Ghana would unmistakably reject the governance of the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia/NPP administration, which, in his view, had delivered inadequate governance to the nation.

Concerning the matter of ongoing registration, as advocated by the EC, Mahama insisted that the procedure should incorporate a mechanism allowing all political parties and pertinent stakeholders to actively monitor the process in real-time. This, he argued, would prevent fraud and manipulation that could unfairly benefit any party.

While the EC proposed the date change to improve operational efficiency, particularly in the event of a runoff, the NDC objected, asserting that Dr. Bossman Asare’s announcement did not accurately reflect the consensus reached regarding the commencement year for significant electoral reforms, which was agreed to be November 2028.

  • “I am the spare driver” – Old video of Mahama pops up following Bawumia’s ‘driver’s mate’ statement

“I am the spare driver” – Old video of Mahama pops up following Bawumia’s ‘driver’s mate’ statement

An old video featuring former President John Dramani Mahama describing himself as a “spare driver” has resurfaced, adding fuel to the ongoing debate sparked by Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia’s analogy of being a “driver’s mate” in the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government.

Bawumia, in a recent statement on his plans for Ghana as a presidential candidate, likened his role as vice president to that of a driver’s mate but emphasized that if elected President in 2024, he would be in the driver’s seat with constitutionally mandated authority.

“As Vice-President, I am like a driver’s mate. But if, by the Grace of God, you make me President, I will be in the driver’s seat with constitutionally mandated authority to pursue my vision and my priorities. Clearly, the initial conditions that we inherited in 2017 are not the same as will be in 2025. Therefore, my priorities will be different. We have done many good things, and I will be seeking to build on them,” Dr. Bawumia noted.

The emergence of the old video has intensified the debate, with both Mahama and Bawumia being presidential candidates for the 2024 elections. Critics argue that Bawumia’s analogy was an attempt to distance himself from the failures of the current government, while Mahama’s supporters contend that Mahama took responsibility for his role in the Mills-led government.

In the 2012 video taken during a presidential debate organised by the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), Mahama, who succeeded late President John Atta Mills, urged Ghanaians to vote him as president for his second and final term, portraying himself as the “spare driver” completing Mills’ unexpired term.

“The NDC government has done a lot in four years. Our constitution gives our president two terms, take it that I am the spare driver, caretaker or whatever; Prof. Mills of blessed memory started the process, and I am finishing his unexpired term. I believe that the NDC government deserves a second term to be able to build on the foundation it has laid in these four years, and I am certain that Ghanaians would vote for me and turn me from the spare driver that I’ve been described as, into the actual driver of the bus leading us into the destination that we want to go to,” he stated.

The contrasting descriptions have sparked a heated online debate, with supporters of both sides arguing over the perceived differences between a spare driver and a driver’s mate. Pro-Mahama supporters claim a clear distinction, while pro-Bawumia advocates accuse NDC members of hypocrisy and undue criticism.

  • Mahama accuses DCEs, NPP members of taking over mining, destroying water bodies

Mahama accuses DCEs, NPP members of taking over mining, destroying water bodies

Former President John Dramani Mahama has sounded a clarion call, alleging that district chief executives (DCEs) and members of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) have reportedly seized control of mining operations in Ghana, sparking concerns about the integrity of the country’s mining sector.

Speaking during an address in the Ashanti Region, Mahama expressed deep apprehension over what he described as the alarming trend of DCEs and NPP members monopolizing mining concessions for their personal gain. He voiced his dismay at the apparent lack of oversight and regulation, emphasizing the need for urgent intervention to address the situation.

According to Mahama, the unchecked allocation of mining concessions to select individuals within the NPP ranks poses a significant threat to Ghana’s natural resources and environmental sustainability. He highlighted the adverse effects of unregulated mining activities on water bodies, noting with concern the increasing turbidity of water bodies in the southern region of the country.

Mahama pledged to take decisive action to combat illegal mining and protect Ghana’s land and water resources if elected back into office. He outlined plans to establish district offices dedicated to processing mining license applications and cracking down on illegal mining operations, aiming to restore transparency and accountability to the sector.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer’s remarks come amid mounting concerns over the proliferation of illegal mining activities and environmental degradation in Ghana. The issue of illegal mining, commonly known as “galamsey,” has long been a contentious issue, with successive governments grappling to find lasting solutions to curb its detrimental effects on the environment and livelihoods.

Mahama’s pledge to prioritize the regulation of the mining sector underscores the critical importance of sustainable resource management and environmental conservation in Ghana’s development agenda.

As the country prepares for the upcoming elections, Mahama’s promises to address illegal mining and protect natural resources are likely to resonate with voters concerned about environmental sustainability and responsible governance.

Retired Commissioner of Police (COP), Nathan Kofi Boakye was spotted leading John Mahama as Asanteman observed a durbar of chiefs to mark the 150th Anniversary of the Sagrenti War, a historic conflict between the Asantes and the British Colonial Army in 1874.

The commemorative durbar, named “Kuntunkuni” to honor the memories of the war, saw the presence of John Mahama and other prominent political figures.

Retired Commissioner of Police (COP) Nathan Kofi Boakye was spotted leading John Mahama as Asanteman observed a durbar of chiefs to mark the 150th Anniversary of the Sagrenti War, a historic conflict between the Asantes and the British Colonial Army in 1874.

The commemorative durbar, named “Kuntunkuni” to honor the memories of the war, saw the presence of John Mahama and other prominent political figures. Notably, Kofi Boakye, dressed in black, escorted John Mahama to the event.

Earlier, the retired police chief was observed participating in the campaign efforts of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to regain power from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP). He joined the NDC’s 24-hour Economy Sensitization Walk in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, alongside former President John Dramani Mahama and NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah.

There’s growing speculation that Boakye might be selected as the running mate for NDC presidential candidate John Mahama in the upcoming December 2024 elections.

Sources within the NDC suggest that discussions and selection processes are ongoing, with increasing confidence that Mahama will nominate Boakye, considering their close relationship and Boakye’s ties to the influential Manhyia Palace in the Ashanti Region.

Despite retiring from the Ghana Police Service with a reputation for professionalism and bravery, Boakye’s potential selection as Mahama’s running mate has sparked debates. While some believe it could boost Mahama’s chances of winning the presidency, others argue that Boakye’s presence on the ticket might ensure a more robust response to the NPP’s alleged election rigging plans in 2024.

  • Dagbon overlord urges John Mahama to recognize Bawumia as a brother, not an enemy

Dagbon overlord urges John Mahama to recognize Bawumia as a brother, not an enemy

Overlord of Dagbon, Ya-Na Abubakari Mahama II, has delivered a message of unity and reconciliation to former President John Dramani Mahama during the latter’s ‘Building Ghana Tour.’ In a speech read on behalf of the Ya-Na during a courtesy call by Mahama, the traditional leader urged the former president to recognize Vice President Dr Bawumia as a brother, not an enemy, for a clean and respectful 2024 election campaign.

Ya-Na emphasized that both the NPP flagbearer and the NDC flagbearer are his sons, and as such, they should conduct themselves with decorum, avoiding petty name-calling and fostering a spirit of brotherhood.

This counsel from the Dagbon Overlord comes in response to recent comments made by John Mahama, who referred to President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Bawumia as “Jack Toronto and his younger brother.”

The Ya-Na encouraged the NDC flagbearer, stating, “You have no other brother out there besides him (Bawumia). Being on the opposite side of the political divide does not make you enemies.”

The traditional leader urged both Mahama and Bawumia to maintain peace during this year’s election, emphasizing that “only Allah knows the winner of the election.”

During his visit to Yendi, the former president informed the Ya-Na of his presence in the region and sought permission to tour selected constituencies. As the political landscape intensifies in the lead-up to the 2024 general elections, the call for unity and respectful discourse from traditional leaders becomes increasingly significant.

  • Kill me if Mahama does not win elections with Leslie Tamakloe as running mate – Apostle

Kill me if Mahama does not win elections with Leslie Tamakloe as running mate – Apostle

Founder of Hezekiah Apostolic Prayer Ministry, Apostle Kwabena Owusu Adjei has offered himself up for lynching if a prophesy about former President John Dramani Mahama wining the 2024 elections.

Apostle Owusu Adjei in his declaration indicated that the former President will win the elections hands down if he chooses one Leslie Tamakloe as his running mate.

Speaking at a press conference, he said: “My name is Apostle Kwabena Owusu Adjei and I am advertising my God, the God of Bethel; Genesis 31:13, it says, ‘I am the God of Bethel.’

“I am saying these are the words of the God of Bethel. His excellency John Dramani Mahama, correct your mistakes from 2020, go to the Volta Region, choose Leslie Mensah Tamakloe as your running mate, you will win hands down. NDC, you have the opportunity and the possibility to rule for 30 good years,” he stated.

It was during these remarks that Apostle Mensah said he would offer himself to be lynched if the NDC wins the election without naming Leslie Tamakloe as running mate.

“If his Excellency John Dramani Mahama refuses and goes for any other candidate apart from Leslie Mensah Tamakloe born on the 18th of April, 1957 and wins this election, I Apostle Kwabena Owusu Adjei I am offering my body to be lynched by the NDC foot soldiers and grassroot supporters.

“We will meet at former Obra Spot, Kwame Nkrumah Interchange-Dubai. Bring all your cameras, call me guilty, whatever they want to do to me; they can stone me, lash me, whatever. I said I offer myself because I am so confident in my God that there is no turning back,” he stated.

The Apostle went on to state that he will still put himself up to be lynched if the NDC fails to win the election after heeding to the directive of his prophecy.

Former President Mahama’s second attempt at winning Ghana’s presidency after losing the 2016 election will come off in the December polls in a contest that is set to have him and Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, New Patriotic Party flagbearer as frontrunners.

Both leading candidates have yet to name their running mates with months left to the election.

    2014: Mahama chased in US

THIS ARTICLE WAS FIRST PUBLISHED ON OCTOBER 2, 2014

President John Dramani Mahama was over the weekend chased with an assortment of placards of protests by Ghanaians resident in the United States, a source at the Ghana Embassy in Washington DC told the Daily Guide.

This was when he went to Worcester to address Ghanaian residents on the sidelines of his UN General Assembly meeting on Saturday, September 27.

Long before his arrival at the event venue, a group of concerned Ghanaians had besieged the St Spyridon Church, located at number 102 Russell Street in Worcester, Massachusetts, with a protest against harsh economic conditions in Ghana and the increasing spate of corruption in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government under his watch.

“It was very embarrassing to see the president being smuggled through the back door by his security details to avoid public humiliation,” the source disclosed.

Upon arrival, President Mahama was whisked away by his security details and protocol officers to avoid being hooted by the protesters who wielded placards with various inscriptions, some of which read, “Ghana is sinking under your leadership” “Stop corruption in Ghana”, “Mahama, declare your assets,” “Prosecute your corrupt friends, Mr. DJ!”

Other placards read, “Stop the create, loot and share schemes,” “Afriyie-Ankrah must be jailed,” “When is the dumsor going to end?” and “Ghana is crying for a visionary Leader.”

Feeling despised and angry at the President’s decision to avoid them, the demonstrators, who were clad in black and red apparel, were said to have marched around the venue for the event with their placards.

The well-attended event was planned by the Ghana Embassy in Washington DC to afford the president the opportunity to explain some of his policies to the Ghanaian residents there and to listen to the concerns at first hand.

One of the organizers of the demonstration, Amoako Mensah, who confirmed the incident to ‘Daily Guide’ from his base in the US, described President Mahama’s action as “an act of cowardice unbecoming of a leader of a sovereign state”.

Amoako Mensah said he was so appalled to find out later that President Mahama deliberately avoided his own countrymen and women who had gathered at the venue to make their concerns known to him.

He, therefore, called on Ghanaians to rise up and take their country back.

An obviously unhappy Amoako Mensah also urged Ghanaians to re-examine the current economic and infrastructural state of the country to enable them to make informed and better electoral choices in the 2016 general elections.

  • You won’t win 2024 elections by attacking LGBTQ community – Sister Derby tells Mahama

You won’t win 2024 elections by attacking LGBTQ community – Sister Derby tells Mahama

Ghanaian singer and LGBTQ advocate, Sister Derby, has called out politicians for their “dishonest” and “insensitive” stance on LGBTQ rights.

In a recent social media post, she criticized politicians, including former president John Mahama, for using religion and culture to appeal to anti-LGBTQ sentiments while avoiding offence to queer acquaintances and business partners.

“Our politicians always choose their words carefully because they all have acquaintances and business partners who are queer so they would never say they are against LGBTQ people but they would rather say carefully that they are against marriage between persons of the same sex,” Sister Derby stated.

Sister Derby emphasized that politicians are sidestepping the crucial issues faced by the LGBTQ community in Ghana, such as discrimination, violence, and the denial of basic human rights.

She argued that politicians carefully choose their words to maintain a delicate balance, opting to express opposition to same-sex marriage rather than addressing the broader challenges confronting LGBTQ individuals.

Asserting that LGBTQ individuals in Ghana are not demanding marriage, which is not legally recognized in many countries, Sister Derby urged politicians to focus on respecting the basic human rights and dignity of the LGBTQ community.

“LGBTQ persons in Ghana NEVER asked for marriage. They only ask for basic human rights and to be left in peace.

“Politicians ride on the wave of homophobia and transphobia to get the masses who are brainwashed with religion to vote for them.”

She called on politicians to refrain from exploiting homophobia and transphobia to secure votes, emphasising that religion should not be weaponized against the rights of LGBTQ people.

Sister Derby, a vocal supporter of LGBTQ rights in Ghana, has actively engaged in campaigns and music projects to raise awareness and advocate for the rights of queer individuals.

Despite facing backlash and threats for her stance, she remains defiant and outspoken in her commitment to promoting LGBTQ rights in the country.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has voiced its support for the position of its flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, on LGBTQ+ issues.

The former President recently expressed his opposition to same-sex marriages, citing his faith and emphasizing the natural order of creation.

Samuel Nartey George, the Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, affirmed that any decision made by the party’s flagbearer reflects the party’s stance on LGBTQ+ matters.

He noted that both past and current party leadership endorse the proponents of the anti-gay bill.

The bill, aimed at criminalizing LGBT activities, is currently at the 60% consideration stage in Parliament, with George expressing optimism about its eventual passage.

  • Level of dishonesty and disregard for Ghanaians under this govt unprecedented – Joyce Bawah

Level of dishonesty and disregard for Ghanaians under this govt unprecedented – Joyce Bawah

Special Aide to former President, John Dramani Mahama, has accused the Akufo-Addo-led government of displaying an unprecedented level of dishonesty and disregard for the welfare of the Ghanaian people, particularly in the context of the ongoing galamsey crisis.

In a statement she noted that there is a stark contrast between the President’s promises and the apparent realities exposed by the leaked report on activities of illegal mining authored by the former chairman of the Inter Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM), Prof Frimpong Boateng.

“The level of dishonesty and disregard for the Ghanaian people by this NPP Government is unprecedented and gravely unimaginable.

This president promised to put his presidency on the line to end galamsey at a time when it was axiomatic that they were and are heavily involved in it. This is manifestly evident in Frimpong Boateng’s report, bearing in mind that the president himself commissioned this work.

President Akufo-Addo in 2017, vowed to put his presidency on the line to end the menace of illegal small-scale mining, known as galamsey.

His statement now appears to be in stark contradiction to the findings of the Frimpong Boateng report, according to Joyce Bawah. The report, commissioned by the President himself, revealed the involvement of government officials and members of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in galamsey activities.

Joyce further noted that the treatment meted out to the former Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Professor Kwabena Frimpong Boateng, in the aftermath of the leaked report has become a matter of public concern. She further noted that the apparent lack of decisive action against those implicated raises questions about the government’s commitment to addressing the environmental and economic ramifications of galamsey.

“How the former Minister has since been treated in the aftermath of the leaked report is now a matter of public record and needs no reiteration.

“That galamsey is perpetrated by members of the president’s team and government is confirmed, and it has been established that some NPP members have been using expensive mining equipment without authorisation, raping the state of its natural resources, and destroying our water bodies; whilst Akufo Addo looks on unconcerned,” she said

Joyce Bawah added that President Akufo-Addo’s purported inaction on the matter raises doubts about the sincerity of his commitment to eradicating the illegal mining practice.

  • Mahama has been a victim of extreme prejudice and political propaganda by Akufo-Addo  – Joyce Bawah

Mahama has been a victim of extreme prejudice and political propaganda by Akufo-Addo  – Joyce Bawah

Aide to former Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, has accused the current administration led by President Nana Akufo-Addo of subjecting the former President to extreme prejudice and engaging in political propaganda.

Joyce Bawah contends that the current President, Nana Akufo-Addo, harbored ambitions of ascending to the presidency at any cost, leading to a campaign aimed at destroying Mahama, who was once considered a friend and colleague.

Bawah pointed to instances, such as the Ford vehicle issue and the bus branding “scandal,” where accusations of corruption were hurled at Mahama by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) during the 2016 election campaign.

She noted that these incidents were strategically utilized as political leverage to paint the NDC and its leadership as incompetent and incapable of managing the nation’s affairs.

“It is worth noting that today, Akufo Addo and Bawumia are in power, but they have yet to be able to prove any of these claims,” remarked Bawah.

She argued that the current administration has failed to substantiate the allegations made against Mahama and the NDC during the previous election cycle.

Bawah emphasized that the Ghanaian public is growing increasingly disillusioned with the current administration, accusing them of corruption and associating comfortably with corrupt practices.

She highlighted what she perceived as a level of dishonesty and disregard for the well-being of the Ghanaian people that is unprecedented and gravely unimaginable.

John Mahama’s Building Ghana campaign gears up for a 2-day tour in Eastern Region

The Eastern Region is preparing to welcome the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, as he embarks on an extensive two-day Building Ghana campaign tour scheduled from January 30th to January 31st, 2024.

The primary aim of this campaign tour is to establish connections with diverse communities and key stakeholders, underscoring the party’s unwavering commitment to national development.

According to a statement from Kojo Danquah, the Eastern Regional Communications Officer of the NDC, the tour will commence with a pivotal meeting at the Peduase Resort in the Akuapem South Constituency. President Mahama will engage with the Regional Executive Committee (REC) and other influential stakeholders during this session.

The tour’s agenda includes strategic visits to significant locations such as Anum Palace, a courtesy call to Koforidua Zongo Chiefs, and a durbar with Transport Unions and Traders in Agormenya.

Prominent stops during the tour feature a Town Hall Meeting in the New Juaben South Constituency and a visit to the Asokore SDA Training College in the New Juaben North Constituency.

The activities on the second day will commence with a breakfast meeting with the Clergy at Koforidua Eastern Premier Hotel. Following that, President Mahama will pay respects to the Kukurantumi Chief, interact with local farmers at Ahumanhumasu Pentecost Church, host an engagement ceremony at the Nsutam Community Center, and wrap up the tour with a rally and a round table discussion with party executives.

  • “Akufo-Addo has destroyed us, we want John Mahama now” – Suame Magazine traders declare

“Akufo-Addo has destroyed us, we want John Mahama now” – Suame Magazine traders declare

Traders at Suame Magazine, the largest industrial cluster in Ghana, have expressed their dissatisfaction with the performance of President Nana Akufo-Addo and his government and called for the return of former President John Mahama in the 2024 election.

Suame Magazine, located in Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti Region, is home to over 200,000 workers and 12,000 small businesses, mainly dealing with metal engineering and vehicle repairs.

The traders, who spoke to the media on Friday, January 26, 2024, said they had been disappointed by the unfulfilled promises of Akufo-Addo, especially in the areas of infrastructure, taxation, and importation.

“We don’t have anything to tell him again. All Nana’s promises never happened. He even promised to build a hospital for us, but he never did. After 8 years,” one of the traders said.

Another trader lamented the high cost of importing goods from the port, saying it had affected their businesses negatively.

“The amount of money we use when we are going to get more items, we pay more than that at the port when we get there. Why? What is going on in Ghana is not good, so we are pleading with John Mahama that if he listens to us, we too, we will listen to him. So we beg him he should come and help us here at Magazine. We the scrap dealers and the spare parts dealers are suffering,” he said.

The traders also compared the economic situation under Akufo-Addo and Mahama, and said there was a huge difference in favour of the latter.

“Ghana is not developed yet, but if we compare what Mahama did during his time and what Akufo-Addo has done, there is a huge difference. During Akufo-Addo’s time, cement is 100 cedis, but during Mahama’s time it was 28 cedis. If you look at the difference. Akufo-Addo has destroyed the country in 8 years. So we want Mahama to continue,” another trader said.

A shop owner said his wife always goes home crying because of low sales, and blamed it on the poor economic management of Akufo-Addo.

“My wife has a shop here. She always comes home crying. She says people are unable to buy anything. So sometimes she comes home without sales,” he said.

The traders said they were praying for John Mahama, popularly known as JM, to come back to power and rescue them from their hardships.

“The way the job was when NDC was in power, now it is not so. Everything has reduced. So we are all praying that John Mahama will come back into power. JM should come back,” they said.

John Mahama, who is the presidential candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has been making efforts to woo the voters in the Ashanti Region, promising to complete all the abandoned projects initiated by his government.

Mahama is expected to face Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, who is the presidential candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), in the 2024 election.

In his sermon, the General-Secretary of the Christ Apostolic Church International, Apostle Dr Samuel Addai-Kusi, urged mourners to make strategic decisions into eternity.

Basing his sermon on Luke 16: 27-31, where the famous Lazarus and the rich man’s story is told in the Bible, Apostle Dr Addai-Kusi said “it is important to live a life that will be to the benefit of making it into eternity”.

“I present to you life and death, and I will admonish you to choose life,” he said.

The Apostle also quoted the famous John 3:16, to lead “unsaved” mourners to Christ.

    Tributes

The common thread that ran through the tributes from siblings, traditional rulers, children and other personalities and groups was praise for Major Boakye-Djan for his courage, generosity, compassion and boldness to question the status quo.

There were also tributes from former President Mahama, the NDC Chairman, siblings of Major Boakye-Djan, the Abrofohene, Nana Abena Yeboah Djan; the Abrofohemaa, the Drobo Traditional Area, and the Mponoa Akwamuhene, Obrempong Naña Boah Kofi Agyeman II.

Captain Effah Dartey brought the ceremony alive with his signature song, Ma hwe Ewurade Anim, to wrap up his tribute.

His tribute brought back fond memories tracing how he, together with Rawlings and Boakye-Djan, met at Legon and had their hot political debates leading to the 1979 coup (although he, Effah Dartey, did not take part).

    About Major Boakye-Djan

Known as Osahene, Major Boakye-Djan was credited for masterminding the June 4, 1979 coup that brought the late Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings to power.

A journalist, a soldier and a statesman, Osahene’s relationship with Rawlings later became frosty and went beyond repairs.

He was the 19th of 56 siblings, and named after the father’s (Nana Kofi Twene Djan) distinct relative, Kwame Yiadom Boakye, who was a Paramount Chief of Berekum.

A product of both Opoku Ware and Achimota schools, Osahene entered the University of Ghana, Legon, to study English Literature, Linguistics, Sociology and African Studies.

He joined the Ghanaian Times newspaper after university where his journalism talent was honed.

The military officer had the opportunity, under the Thompson Foundation Course, to study at Cardiff, Wales.

He also became a lecturer at the Ghana Institute of Journalism, and later joined the Daily Graphic (Graphic Communications Group Ltd) and, eventually, the Public Relations Unit of the Ghana Armed Forces.

Fumso traders block New Adubiase highways to catch Mahama’s attention

Residents and traders of Fumso, a suburb of the Ashanti Region, took to the streets to block the New Adubiase highways in an attempt to draw the attention of former President John Mahama during his campaign tour and stakeholder engagement ahead of the 2024 elections.

As Mahama’s convoy made its way towards New Adubiase, a group of determined Fumso traders strategically positioned themselves on the highways, temporarily disrupting traffic flow to voice their grievances.

In a video making rounds on social media the Fumso residents were seen gesticulating with their hands, calling for change.

The visual representation of their frustrations underscores the passion and urgency with which the residents are seeking solutions to the challenges they face in their community.

While the specific grievances of the Fumso residents were not immediately clear from the footage, it is evident that the demonstration was a calculated effort to capture the attention of former President Mahama, who is actively engaging with stakeholders in the Ashanti Region as part of his campaign for the upcoming elections.

Are you awake only when NDC is in power? – Mahama questions GBA amidst accusations of bias against NDC

Former President John Mahama has urged the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) to maintain consistency in advocating for the national interest, regardless of the political party in power.

During a meeting with organized labor representatives in Kumasi, Mahama expressed concerns about the GBA’s perceived silence on critical issues under the current New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.

He pointed out instances where the GBA remained quiet on allegations of human rights violations and questionable government decisions.

Mahama raised questions about the GBA’s credibility, suggesting that its apparent selective activism undermines the principles of justice and accountability.

He highlighted the association’s historical pattern of being more vocal during National Democratic Congress (NDC) governments and less so during New Patriotic Party (NPP) administrations.

Mahama urged the GBA to transcend partisan considerations and consistently advocate for the rights and freedoms of all Ghanaians.

The former president emphasized the importance of upholding the truth and being unwavering in the defense of human rights, regardless of the political climate.

Mahama’s remarks underscore the need for institutions like the GBA to play a consistent and impartial role in safeguarding democratic values and the rule of law.
