NDC primaries: Dumelo, Fred Nuamah’s vetting suspended indefinitely

The vetting of all three Parliamentary aspirants of the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency have been suspended indefinitely.

National Democratic Congress (NDC) has reportedly suspended the vetting of all contestants in the Ayawaso West Wuogon parliamentary primaries indefinitely.

According to a news report by TV3, the parliamentary hopefuls for the constituency – John Dumelo, Fred Nuamah and Moses Barfi Acheampong – did not appear before the vetting committee as of the second day of the vetting.

The report indicated that the NDC has said that it will decide how to proceed with the primaries for the constituency after the deadline for vetting elapses on April 5, 2023.

The parliamentary primaries for the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency has attracted interest after the decision of Fred Nuamah, an actor and film director, to challenge his close friend, whom he describes as his brother, former NDC parliamentary candidate for the constituency, John Dumelo.

Fred Nuamah insists that he had the blessing of John Dumelo to contest in the Ayawaso West Wuogon primaries because he (John Dumelo) told him that he would be gunning to become the party’s candidate for the expected Guan Constituency in the Oti Region.

But John Dumelo has accused Fred Nuamah of betraying him, saying that he never gave his blessing to contest for the primaries.

Meanwhile, at least 37 candidates have been vetted for the parliamentary primaries in the Greater Accra Region, which is slated for May 14, 2023.

Politics won’t destroy our brotherhood – Fred Nuamah to John Dumelo

Actor-turned-politician, Fred Nuamah has said that he will not let politics ruin the relationship he has built with colleague John Dumelo despite their recent fallout.

Speaking on UTV’s United Showbiz, Mr Nuamah said that he sees John Dumelo as a brother and it will be a shame if their years-long relationship comes to an end because of politics.

“John Dumelo is not my friend, he is my brother, so I won’t let politics come between us. I won’t let politics destroy our brotherhood. Apart from him being my brother, NDC is one party so our issue is a house matter,” he stated.

Mr Nuamah said that people are not privy to what goes on behind closed doors adding “ for all you know we have resolved our issues.”

John Dumelo and Fred Nuamah have seemingly been on bad terms since they both announced their decision to contest in the 2023 elections on the ticket of the NDC at the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency.

Fred Nuamah in an interview had said he was surprised Dumelo decided to join the Ayawaso race again, claiming that the actor had told him he was picking forms to contest at SALL in the Volta Region.

He also claimed his friend gave him his blessings and approval to contest in the NDC primaries at Ayawaso West Wuogon.

However, in a later interview, John Dumeo denied all the claims, emphasising that Fred Nuamah knew he (Dumelo) would contest to represent the constituency once again in the 2024 election but he (Nuamah) went to pick the forms anyway.

John Dumelo noted that despite Mr Nuamah’s decision, he would contest and win the NDC primaries to vie for elections in 2024.

However, Fred Nuamah has expressed confidence he will emerge victorious.

He said on UTV that a poll his office conducted predicted he has already won the election by a landslide.

  • John Dumelo told me Ayawaso West Wuogon seat is costly

John Dumelo told me Ayawaso West Wuogon seat is costly

Actor John Dumelo’s allegations that Fred Nuamah failed to inform him of his decision to compete for the Ayawaso West Wuogon parliamentary seat have been denied by Ghanaian actor and film director Fred Nuamah.

Nuamah claims that he spoke with John Dumelo two years ago to discuss his decision to run for the position in case Dumelo intended to resign after running unsuccessfully in 2020.

According to Fred Nuamah, John Dumelo recommended him to pursue his desire to run for office elsewhere due to the expense of the Ayawaso West Constituency.

“I called on him… I am saying that I spoke to my brother about two years ago saying that once you want to leave, I do not want our seat here to be vacant.

“So, even with brotherly advice, he told me that Fred won’t you look elsewhere because the Ayawaso seat is expensive and I said no, because I live here, I want to go for this seat, and then because of the love we do have for each other,” he recounted.

He also stated that the latter gave him permission to run for the seat because he (Dumelo) claimed he was leaving for a different constituency.

Speaking in a panel discussion on United Showbiz on Saturday, March 18, 2023, Fred explained that he arrived at the decision when Dumelo hinted that he was going to contest for the SALL Constituency.

Dumelo has serially denied Nuamah’s claims stating that it was Fred Nuamah rather who had expressly pledged to back his bid to contest for the seat he lost narrowly in 2020.

“We are not friends, as we speak now, we are not friends. We haven’t been friends for a couple of weeks now,” he told MzGee, host of the United Showbiz programme on UTV a week ago.

“At no point did I tell Fred that I am not contesting in Ayawaso West Wuogon, at no point,” he before adding that all claims that he (Dumelo) had opted against running were untrue, incluing one attributed to Yaw Sakyi

“That is a lie. I never had a conversation with Yaw Sakyi about Fred Nuamah. Never, I can never give Fred Nuamah my blessings, when he knows I am coming to contest in Ayawaso West Wuogon,” Dumelo added.

Dumelo described Fred’s decision to release his campaign flyer hours after attending his February 3 private birthday bash as a betrayal and a stab in the back for someone he has known for over 20 years.

Valentina Nana Agyeiwaa popularly known as Afia Schwarzenegger, has endorsed the ongoing feud between Fred Nuamah and John Dumelo.

The two friends turned political opponents have been in the news lately following claims of betrayal from both ends.

John Dumelo and Fred Nuamah’s relationship went sour after the later decided to contest for the same seat (Ayawaso West Wuogon) Dumelo last contested ahead of the National Democratic Congress’ upcoming parliamentary primaries.

John complained bitterly about how Fred stabbed him in the back, by picking forms to contest in the upcoming NDC primaries.

In a bid to state their side of story, both men have taken turns to poke each other in the media, the latest being Nuamah’s appearance on United Showbiz over the weekend.

But wading into the ongoing controversy, Afia Schwarzenegger insists that John Dumelo and Fred Nuamah should not be allowed to smoke the peace pipe.

Afia, who seems excited about their feud took to Instagram and said,

“We have suspended every other beef in the country. Currently, John Dumelo and Fred Nuamah’s beef is reigning. That beef must happen. Even if you guys smoke the peace pipe, we will still give you the peace weed. This beef is very important to us as a country.

“But tell John Dumelo that the official beef language is Twi. Nobody is allowed to beef, using fante language. John, be serious. When have you heard anyone beefing in Fante before?” she mocked.

The CEO of Ghana Movie Awards, Fred Nuamah, has said that he has already won the Ayawaso West Wuogon primaries

He also reacted to John Dumelo’s recent claim that he is no longer his friend.

John Dumelo made this claim on UTV’s United Showbiz after Fred Nuamah declared his intention to contest for the slot as NDC’s parliamentary candidate for the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency.

Fred also indicated that even though they will continue to be together as friends, he is certain of winning the primaries.

By his projection, he has already captured over 80 percent of the electorates in the area.

In reaction to John Dumelo’s earlier statement, Fred Nuamah stated that the former is not his friend but rather a brother.

He added that they have shared many things together in past times and nothing can come between them as brothers, especially politics.

John Dumelo wanted SALL Constituency seat – Fred Nuamah reveals

Ghanaian actor and film director, Fred Nuamah, has noted that his companion, John Dumelo, declared to him his intention to run for the SALL Constituency during the National Democratic Congress’ primaries.

According to him, Mr Dumelo gave him his blessing to Ayawaso West Wougon Parliamentary seat as he had no intentions of running for the second time.

Speaking in a panel discussion on United Showbiz on Saturday, March 18, 2023, Fred explained: “John is not my friend; John is my brother so I won’t let politics destroy us. I did research, I spoke to my future constituents some years back at the time my brother (John Dumelo) said that he was going to the other side (SALL Constituency).

“This is an open secret, who’s in Ghana that doesn’t know that John went to SALL? So, I called on him… I am saying that I spoke to my brother about two years ago saying that once you want to leave, I do not want our seat here to be vacant. So, even with brotherly advice, he told me that Fred won’t you look elsewhere because the Ayawaso seat is expensive and I said no, because I live here, I want to go for this seat, and then because of the love we do have for each other,” he recounted.

Mr Nuamah further disclosed that he sought to get in touch with his friend after receiving reports of a possible return by Dumelo but was unsuccessful.

“Some months ago, I heard rumours that he’s coming back. So, I started calling him to find out, but maybe he was busy so he didn’t pick up my calls, I called him several times….so, I decided to send him messages, that brother, I have heard you’re coming back.

“But before the messages, he picked up one of my calls and I asked him if indeed he was coming back so I can withdraw. And he said I should hold on because he was expecting a call to confirm.

According to him, Mr Dumelo only reached out to him after he had picked his forms.

Meanwhile, John Dumelo who is set to contest with Nuamah for the parliamentary slot of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency recently said that it was Fred Nuamah rather who had expressly pledged to back his bid to contest for the seat he lost narrowly in 2020.

“We are not friends, as we speak now, we are not friends. We haven’t been friends for a couple of weeks now,” he told MzGee, host of the United Showbiz programme on UTV a week ago.

Film director and producer, Fred Nuamah, has stated that the current misunderstanding between him and John Dumelo regarding the Ayawaso West Wuogon ticket for the NDC will soon be settled.

John Dumelo would not consider the creative who has teamed up with numerous other colleagues to run for political office, specifically to represent their people in Parliament, as a friend, but rather as a brother.

According to him, the National Democratic Congress, on whose ticket they both want to run for the upcoming elections is a family, and they won’t allow politics to tear them apart.

John Dumelo who contested for the seat in the 2020 elections and lost has made his intentions of contesting the Ayawaso West Wuogon slot again.

But Fred Nuamah, a colleague in the creative industry has picked nominations to contest the same seat, which Dumelo said is “a stab in the back.”

“John is not my friend. He is my brother and I won’t allow this politics to divide us and apart from him being my brother from the other side, the NDC is one party and the matter between us is an internal matter and for all you know, we have even resolved it already,” he said on United Showbiz Friday, March

When asked of the allegations being made against him for picking the forms, he reiterated it was John’s decision to go to SALL that made him pursue his interest.

“I don’t blame John for calling me a liar and betrayer because if I explain, you’ll understand me. I did a research with my future constituents some years back when my brother decided to go to the other side (SALL it is an open secret that John made up his mind to go to SALL so I don’t want to dwell on it).

  • Ghanaian men are too diplomatic, they should be straight forward – Women complain

Ghanaian men are too diplomatic, they should be straight forward – Women complain

Ghanaian men have been described to have a laissez-faire attitude towards certain situations. They seem to be very slow to action especially when they are needed the most.

A media practitioner Harriet Nartey, actor John Dumelo and an avid listener of Joy FM, Susan Adu Amankwah were on the Joy Super Morning Show on Friday to discuss the topic “What do Ghanaian men bring to the table” in a relationship?

Susan disclosed that Ghanaian men are not assertive. According to her, certain issues need to be dealt with directly and instantly yet Ghanaian men will pay little attention and keep them pending.

“Ghanaian men really can be laissez-faire, there are certain things you expect action, you expect a bit of assertiveness and then they relax and say oh let’s see how it goes and we will pick it easy, it will find its way,”

“It can be good at times, yes, but there are certain times that action must happen and the Ghanaian man is relaxed and you’re just confused,” she said.

Susan advised Ghanaian men to create a perfect balance between their diplomatic personality and also being assertive to create a smooth and comfortable environment.

“Every virtue when it gets to the extreme can become a vice,” she advised.

According to Madam Amankwah, this downside is almost only peculiar to Ghanaian men. She said she has encountered men from other countries who seem to be a bit more upfront and assertive than the typical Ghanaian.

On the other hand, the Ghanaian men in the studio came to their own defense to explain why they are slow to action and sometimes allow women to take charge.

Programme host Kojo Yankson agreed to the fact that Ghanaian men are slow to action, however, he explained that men do that because they are very calculated and cautious when handling issues because they always want to be accurate in giving solutions.

“I think Ghanaian men are slow to action generally because we are very deliberative, we want to deliberate and be as sure as possible before we take an action. We hate to be wrong or we hate to throw a resource in the wrong direction, so we want to get it right”, Mr. Yankson said.

Co-host Winston Amoah also said men mostly allow women to take charge for their own peace of mind.

“If you want your peace of mind, the woman is always right, when it gets difficult the men step in and get it done but until then, he wants to sit back and watch you do all the things. And it’s nice when the women are in charge, it’s so peaceful,” he said.

Harriet joined in to advise that going forward, she expects Ghanaian men to listen more and pay attention to detail.

“Hopefully in the future, we want to see the Ghanaian man not being diplomatic with everything because they have to portray niceness, gentility and loving,”

“We want to see the Ghanaian man listening more, quick to action, trusting the fact that whoever is offering them help is coming from a genuine place, do not think that it is being weaponized against you or there is a motive behind that,” Harriet counselled.

Just withdraw and support John Dumelo – Van Calebs to Fred Nuamah

Ghanaian event organizer and traditional dance instructor, Van Calebs has waded into the ongoing feud between movie star cum politicians John Dumelo and Fred Nuamah.

Van Calebs in social media post called for calm and appealed to the two celebrities to settle their differences amicably.

He warned that the feud could degenerate into an unwanted situation that could hurt the ambitions of both men.

“Just saw the video of my good friend Dumelo’s comment on UTV and I believe everything can be resolved. John and Fred are good friends I think we can resolve this and make sure it doesn’t get bad,” he said.

Van Calebs however advised Fred Nuamah to withdraw his candidature and throw his weight behind John Dumelo.

According to him, John Dumelo polled some good numbers in the last elections and therefore represent a credible chance for the National Democratic Congress to wrestle the Ayawaso West Wuogon parliamentary seat.

He explained that it will be in interest of the creative sector to have another representation in Parliament and that John Dumelo has shown to be someone who has the interest of the constituency and the sector at heart.

Van Calebs urged Fred Nuamah and Ghanaian creatives to rally behind Dumelo and support his bid to win the seat from the incumbent Lydia Seyram Alhassan.

“John did well in the last election and I think we can all support him to win it in 2024. Fred has a good move but I think he should withdraw and support Dumelo”.

Dumelo and Fred Nuamah who were known to be friends are set to go head-to-head for the right to represent the NDC in the 2024 elections.

Fred Nuamah accused John Dumelo of bad faith as he alleged that he had the blessings of his friend to contest the polls.

But John Dumelo in a UTV interview dismissed the claims, calling Fred Nuamah a liar. He disclosed that at no point did Fred Nuamah hold conversation with him over his interest in the Ayawaso West Wuogon seat.

  • I never gave Fred my blessings to contest, he is a liar – John Dumelo

I never gave Fred my blessings to contest, he is a liar – John Dumelo

Actor-turned-politician John Dumelo has dismissed claims that he gave his blessings to his friend and colleague Fred Nuamah to contest for the Ayawaso West Wuogon NDC Parliamentary seat.

According to him, Fred Nuamah knew he would contest to represent the constituency once again in the 2024 elections but he (Nuamah) went to pick the forms anyway.

Speaking on UTV’s United Showbiz, he said the Ghana Movie Award CEO’s claims that he (Dumelo) had not informed him of his “second coming” and had given his blessing is untrue.

“I never gave him my blessings and I never told him in the face that ‘Fred I am not coming back (to Ayawaso) so you can go there’. I never said it, never in any conversation whatsoever,” he said.

John Dumelo added that “he called me two months ago and said he had heard of my return and so he was ready to support my bid to come back. He came to my birthday on February 3, and later in the evening he released his flyer.”

Fred Nuamah, John Dumelo said, later sent him a long message explaining why he was also bidding to contest.

However, the 2020 NDC parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso West Wuogon said “I insisted then that I never told him I wouldn’t come back so which blessings did I give?”

“I think this is a betrayal and a stab in the back, especially for someone I’ve known for more than 20 years. I didn’t want to speak about this but I needed to clear the air after his statements…he is a liar,” John Dumelo added.

This comes after actor turned-politician Fred Nuamah claimed he was taken aback by his friend, John Dumelo’s “u-turn” after his declaration to contest once again for the Ayawaso West Wuogon seat after previous assurances that he would not.

In an interview with graphic showbiz, Mr Nuamah explained that the 2020 NDC Parliamentary candidate for the constituency had informed him and others that he would no longer contest for a parliamentary seat in the Greater Accra Region.

Noting that he will not back down in the contest, Fred said that “he gave me his blessings when I made up my mind to contest.”

“I would have rather expected him to honour his word when he said he won’t contest the seat and, therefore, throw his support behind me,” the Ghana Movie Awards CEO said.

However, John Dumelo insists that no such interactions happened saying “does he deserve my blessings.”

John Dumelo is confident he will win the NDC primaries especially since he believes the delegates and constituents want him back.

He polled 37,778 votes against the incumbent, New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Lydia Seyram Alhassan’s 39,851 votes, offering hope for a good chance to probably win the slot at the next general election in 2024.

“I am contesting and he will lose the primaries, if you speak to the delegates, they all want John to come back to continue the good work he is doing. As for Fred coming, I don’t know his motivation. That is the point.

“He is a liar, I never said I won’t come back, I didn’t give him my blessings. But he, Fred, does he deserve my blessings? That he should go to Ayawaso West. Can he face NPP?” Dumelo quizzed.

  • NDC primaries: It’s too late to back down – Fred Nuamah

NDC primaries: It’s too late to back down – Fred Nuamah

Actor Fred Nuamah has disclosed that his colleague actor turned politician, John Dumelo, once disclosed to him that he would not contest the Ayawaso West Wuoguon NDC parliamentary seat.

With many puzzled over why two best friends, Fred Nuamah and John Dumelo would contest in the Ayawaso West Wuogon parliamentary primaries of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the former has said he is surprised the latter backtracked on a decision to not contest.

According to Fred who was Dumelo’s best man when the actor married in 2019, he will not step down because Dumelo initially had no intention to join the Ayawaso West Wuogon contest; rather, he eyed another constituency.

“Frankly, it’s late to step down. My brother informed me and a lot of people that he was not going to contest the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency again. He gave me his blessings when I made up my mind to contest.

“Truthfully, I am surprised about his u-turn because it was evident and crystal clear that he was not going for the Ayawaso seat anymore and rather invested in Guan/SALL,” Graphic Showbiz quotes Fred Nuamah to have said in an interview with the newspaper.

In early February, Fred Nuamah made his intention public by announcing his bid with posters on his social media pages. This made some wonder if that was an indication that Dumelo would focus elsewhere considering that they are friends, GhanaWeb observed.

Dumelo, however, tweeted on Sunday, February 26, 2023, that “After extensive consultation with my God, my family and our party faithful in Ayawaso West Wuogon. This is the second coming.”

The actor who is also a farmer contested for the Ayawaso West Wuogon parliamentary seat and won on August 24, 2020, but lost to NPP’s Lydia Alhassan during the December 7, 2020 polls. His decision to contest again after Nuamah announced his ambition has put a spotlight on the constituency again ahead of the 2024 general elections.

Some have urged the two to find a way to resolve the matter. They have argued that it would be better for one of them to step down and support the other. Others, on the other hand, have posited that once it would be a healthy competition, there is no need for one to step down.

Nuamah maintained in his interview that Dumelo should rather “honour his word when he said he won’t contest the seat and, therefore, throw his support behind me. Besides, the argument that my brother made history for the NDC doesn’t hold for me. Our party has been performing quite well in that constituency in previous elections before he contested the last elections.”

He continued: “We have even won the presidential votes in Ayawaso before. We always come close to winning the parliamentary; we only lose it by some small margins. So, all the previous candidates, including John Dumelo, did well, but the ultimate is to win and not close a gap or place second.”

The NDC has set May 13, 2023, as the date for both its presidential and parliamentary primaries. According to the party, parliamentary candidates will be required to purchase a form for GH¢5,000 and pay a non-refundable filing fee of GH¢40,000.

Presidential candidates will be required to purchase a form for GH¢30,000 and pay a non-refundable filing fee of GH¢500,000.

We’re finished! – M3nsa reacts to John Dumelo, Fred Nuamah’s MP contest

Ghanaian musician, M3nsa, has claimed that it will be a bad idea for John Dumelo or Fred Nuamah to be given the mandate to serve as Members of Parliament.

The two Ghanaian celebrities are gearing up for the NDC primaries where they will be keenly contesting for the parliamentary candidature in the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency.

Fred Nuamah, a popular Ghanaian actor cum CEO of Ghana Movie Awards took netizens by surprise after the flyer announcing his political intent went viral.

John Dumelo, who contested the seat in the 2020 elections but lost to Ms Lydia Alhassan, has declared a comeback.

The two aspirants have since been trending on social media, particularly, Twitter, after they declared their intentions.

But wading into the discussion, M3nsa said the two aspirants are not to be trusted.

He took to Twitter and wrote, “Some of us grew up knowing some of these people personally and I tell you… we’re FUCKED!.”

The tweet was a direct reaction to a post shared by the handle of a local media.

Two friends contesting for the same seat

Although John Dumelo and Fred Nuamah will be contesting for the same position, the same party, and at the same constituency (Ayawaso West Wuogon), they are good friends.

Some individuals and groups in the Guan District have presented a cash amount of GH¢5,500.00 to John Dumelo to pay his filing fee in the upcoming parliamentary primaries in the enclave.

The groups, made of Okada riders, farmers, traders and beneficiaries of John Dumelo’s benevolent works in the district, said they wanted him as their representative in Parliament after the 2024 elections.

John Dumelo, an actor, farmer and politician, contested the 2020 parliamentary elections at the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency in the Greater Accra Region.

His performance was one which was hailed by many political analysts although he failed to secure a seat in the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Bulley Harrison, Caretaker of a factory being built by John Dumelo, received the token on behalf of the actor and promised to relay the information to him.

Dzamesi Lawrence, a leader of Okada riders in Likpe, said they called on the caretaker to present the token due to John Dumelo’s absence.

He said the developmental projects and lives touched on in the district formed the basis for their support.

Tsatsu Godwin, a resident of Lolobi, noted that John Dumelo’s representation of the area in Parliament would give the area the development it needed for years.

Miss Abdullah Salamatu, a trader, said Mr Dumelo had a lot of plans for the youth and women, and it would be a disservice on their part to allow him to represent a different Constituency in Parliament.

She said John Dumelo’s commitment to seeing that everyone benefitted in society was there for all to see.

Ghana News Agency’s checks revealed that although the Party has opened nominations for the presidential and parliamentary aspirants, Mr Dumelo is yet to pick his nomination form as well as declare the Constituency.

Meet the celebrities set to contest in upcoming NDC parliamentary primaries

The transition from social media fame to the ‘halls of power’ has been a smooth one for many ‘socialite-turned-politicians’.

Perhaps, it is because their celebrity status puts them a step ahead of potential competitors, with ‘fame’ being the catalyst.

Also, the drive for an increased youth participation in governance in recent times has turned the political culture into a vibrant one, thereby making it attractive for some celebrities to participate.

This trend was not the same in the past, as politics was largely dominated by full-time politicians, businessmen, or ex-military generals.

However, it is interesting to note that a number of celebrities are contesting party primaries to represent the opposition National Democratic Congress in Parliament.

Seeking a total overhaul, these individuals are not only pushing for a change in their various constituencies, but also a change in the seat of the presidency.

  • Renovate tourist sites to make Ghana center for attraction – John Dumelo

Renovate tourist sites to make Ghana center for attraction – John Dumelo

Actor, farmer, and politician, John Dumelo has called on the government of Ghana to work towards the renovation of tourist sites in the country to make it a hub for tourism in Africa.

According to John Dumelo, Ghana arguably has become the choicest place of destination for most persons in the diaspora to be in Africa during festive
periods due to the many music concerts and festivals that are organized, however, he believes that visits to Ghana should not only be in December but should be all year round.

The actor believes this can be achieved if government renovates old tourist sites, builds new ones, and creates policies to empower the tourism industry.

If accomplished, John Dumelo says Ghana would become the hub of tourism in Africa and a place foreigners would want to visit at all times.

“Gradually Ghana is becoming the destination for Dec vacations bc of numerous music festivals and entertainment events. Now let’s try and focus on rehabilitating the old tourist sites and build new world-class ones so we can get more tourists all year round. This is our time!,” the actor wrote this one his official page on micro-blogging application, Twitter.

John Dumelo was recently in the news for predicting that the Cedi which was then appreciating would perform poorly against the US dollar in 2023.

According to Mr Dumelo, this is so because import-driven companies have already secured their stock for Christmas and no longer need the dollar to import more stuff.

“$$ will keep coming down in the next few weeks. Reason: 1. Importers don’t need $$ now, they have enough goods for the Xmas period. 2. $$ are in the system due to Xmas visitors,” he tweeted.

  • Dumelo applauds Cedi’s achievements

John Dumelo, a businessman, has praised the strengthening of the cedi against the dollar.

He hopes the cedi keeps rising so that forecasts for 2023 will be helped.

This was announced by John Dumelo via a tweet.

“I can see the cedi has made big gains against the dollar,” he remarked.
I hope it keeps going like way.
For the estimates for 2023, we require some forex stability.

According to the Bank of Ghana’s currency rate, the dollar is now trading at GHC8 and GHC7.

It is difficult to pinpoint the cause of the cedi’s continuous rise against the dollar, but it may help to recall that Ghana’s vice president had anticipated significant gains for the currency.

At a function where he spoke, he said government was putting in place measures to ensure that the cedi makes huge gains.

He was optimistic that fuel prices will also drop drastically adding that living standards will come to normalcy.

  • Cedi to worsen against dollar in January 2023 – John Dumelo explains

Ghanaian farmer and politician, John Dumelo, has projected that Ghana will next year January return to a period where the cedi depreciates further against the dollar.

His projection comes at a time when the cedi has been adjudged the  best-performing currency against the dollar since it has appreciated by 3.12% against the dollar on the retail market.

According to Mr Dumelo, this is so because import-driven companies have already secured their stock for the Christmas and no longer need the dollar to import more stuffs.

“$$ will keep coming down in the next few weeks. Reason: 1. Importers don’t need $$ now, they have enough goods for the Xmas period. 2. $$ are in the system due to Xmas visitors,” he tweeted.

However, he noted that after the Yuletide season, importers would not to restock, thus more dollar would be demanded, which would result in the depreciation of the cedi once again as seen in 2022.

“But $$ might go up in Jan cos importers need to restock & foreign companies have to repatriate profits,” he added.

Since the beginning of the year, the cedi has lost more than 50% of its value against major trading currencies.

This has been attributed to external factors fueled by the USA’s revision of its interest rate to check inflation and internal factors such as speculation and dependence on imported products normally prices in dollars.

According to reports, a dollar is now trading a little over GH10.

After launching the initiative, John Dumelo was hopeful that the initiative would reduce our rice, tomatoes, and onions imports by 50% in the next 6 years.

He called on all to join hands to make the initiative work.

,”I’m happy to launch the “Operation Feed Ourselves” initiative this morning. The main focus of this initiative is to produce more foodstuff especially rice( from the Guan district and Northern parts of Ghana), tomatoes, onions and maize from other parts of the country.

“Another important aspect is to urge Ghanaians to add value to what we produce and consume Made in Ghana products. Hopefully this initiative will reduce our rice, tomatoes, onions imports by 50% in the next 6 years. Lets us all join hands to make this work,” the actor posted on his Facebook page.

  • Most cocoa farmers have never tasted chocolate; we need value addition – Dumelo

Actor, politician and farmer John Dumelo has called for value addition in Ghana’s agric sector.

In his view, that is the way to go in order to make the local farmer competitive.

Speaking during the 3business agribusiness dialogue on Wednesday, October 26, he said “We have to look at adding value to our produce and also post-harvest losses.

“Most cocoa farmers haven’t tasted chocolate before yet we are the net exporter of cocoa.”

During the event, the 2018 National Best Farmer, James Boateng said Ghana needs to scale up its agricultural production.

He said there was a need to apply technology to scale up production.

He said “we are not even applying the little technology that we have.

“I don’t know why we can’t grow tomatoes and onions in Ghana to the extent that we buy from Burkina Faso. We have issues with logistics.”

He added “We need to look at our inputs. Ghana 2019 did quite well in terms of the provision of inputs and in turn, our maize production increased.”

For its part, former Managing Director of the Stanbic Bank, Naa Alhassan Andani observed that the agric sector of the Ghanaian economy and other parts of Africa has been exposed by global happenings.

He indicated that Ghanaians consume more than they produce locally. This means a lot more foreign exchange earnings is required to bring in additional food supplies to feed the people.

When the exchange rate is affected, he said, it means food supply is heavily affected thereby creating difficulties for Ghanaians.

“This event could not be happening at a better time and I hope our panellist will elevate the conversation to the level of state and to the level of global coordination.

“Agriculture is probably one gifted industry to Ghana, to Africa, not all of Africa, Ghana, . When the fundamentals are weak the exchange rate will expose you.

“On this one in agriculture the fundamentals are that everything we consume in this country, we consume more of our agricultural product in this country than we produce. Therefore for the surplus that you consume you have to bring from outside.

“What do you need? You need foreign exchange and when the foreign exchange is not there the fundamentals will expose you. So I think today’s Ghana and the world economy has exposed us in terms  of the way we are organized in our agricultural sector.”

  • Start small to thrive in farming – John Dumelo advises youth

John Dumelo, a multi-award-winning actor and farmer, has advised young people interested in pursuing a career in agriculture to start small and not wait for large amounts of funding.

The farmer/politician claimed in an exclusive interview that despite farming being a successful industry, most young people are deterred from choosing that career path because they believe it requires enormous capital, vast amounts of land, and advanced technologies to start.

“You only need one plot of land to begin farming.
The farming will gradually increase if you cultivate veggies, make sure you have a market for them, sell them, and reinvest the little profits.

He stated that in as much as funding is very essential, it is necessary to start small with the little capital and piece of land available to acquire firsthand knowledge and skills to subsequently leverage for funds in future.

“Nobody is going to give you the capital if you haven’t farmed before. But if you start small, you will get the experience and evidence to seek for financial support. Access to capital in this country is difficult and it cuts across in all sectors, so at the initial stage, you can generate capital from friends and family,” he stated.

“So for the youth who want to go into farming, first thing is to be patient, dedicated and have the passion. Most of them just want to get into it, invest and then within a month or two, they may have doubled their money. Vegetables take 3 months, the new variety of cocoa 2 to 3 years, coconut 4 years and rubber 5 to 6 years. It is about timing and once you start planting, you are going to harvest,” he said.

Also, he added that in order to enhance economic development in the agricultural sector, the country has to move from being just the producer to manufacturer and add value to the natural resources being produced.

“For instance, Ghana produces timber and we need to add value to it to make high quality furniture that would be exported to other countries rather than the raw material. One of the world’s largest producers of chocolate is Switzerland, however, it produces approximately just one percent of cocoa. We are the second largest producer of cocoa, yet, where has our chocolate gotten to?” he bemoaned.

He further added that as the country strives to “eat what we grow and grow what we eat”, it is important to change the educational system at the early stage and incorporate farming practices in the curriculum to take away the thought of children perceiving farming as a form of punishment.

Agriculture plays a significant role in the economic development of the country. Aside providing about 90 percent of food for the growing population, it absorbs 52 percent of the labour force and contributes to 54 percent of country’s GDP as well as accounts for over 40 percent of export earnings.

According to the Ghana Statistical Service, the GDP from agriculture as at the first quarter of 2022 was GH¢1 billion but decreased to GH¢836.6 million in the second quarter of the year.

  • Netizens push for John Dumelo to run for Ghana’s presidency as soon as possible

We are two years away from Ghana’s next general elections but citizens are already debating who should be voted as Ghana’s next president.

This comes after hundreds of backlash against the sitting President, H.E Nana Addo, over the depreciation of the Ghanaian cedi and the rise of inflation which has imposed economic hardship on Ghanaians.

In a report by Bloomberg, the Ghana cedi is now the worst-performing currency in the world against the American Dollar. The giant economics news portal states that the cedi has lost 45.1% of its value against the US dollar since the year began.

Bloomberg tracked the currency of 148 countries and ranked Ghana’s currency as the worst. Ghana’s currency switched places with the Sri Lankan rupee, which is now the second worst performer with a 44.7% drop to the dollar this year.

Some social media users have taken to social media to express disappointment in the Nana Addo-Bawumia NPP-led government. Whilst others call for the return of John Mahama, others also believe the former president isn’t a better option for Ghana.

This has forced netizens to think outside the box, hence, John Dumelo’s name popping up as someone who could do for Ghana beyond.

It pains me John Dumelo isn’t an independent Candidate. Man lost the MP position twice and didn’t fold his arms, he went straight to farming. That’s a visionary person for me if not a leader. If he campaigned as independent and not NDC, the youth will root for him gradually,” Twitter influencer, @DonSarkcess tweeted.

Those rooting for John Dumelo please don’t worry NDC will present him after Mahama finishes his term. Between Him and Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa who do you think will be a perfect fit,” another Twitter said.

In the 2020 elections, the Ghanaian actor contested on the ticket of the NDC as an MP for the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency. However, he lost the seat to the sitting MO, Hon Lydia Alhassan.

  • I broke down after old tweets resurfaced – KiDi

Musician KiDi has revealed that he felt embarrassed, sad and defeated after people began pulling out his “inappropriate” old tweets.

Speaking on Daybreak Hitz on Hitz Fm, the ‘Touch It’ hitmaker said that prior to the incident on Wednesday evening, he was not in a good mental state when he was hit with the tweets and criticisms that followed.

“So I was already dealing with a lot…I didn’t even have time to breathe and reset…I remember when it happened I was having my EP listening session. I actually had to leave in the middle of it,” he told Andy Dosty.

KiDi added that “I broke down in the middle of people, it was just a lot for me, so I had to leave and go home. I felt really embarrassed about all of it,” he added.

The ‘Gyal Dem Sugar’ hitmaker added that although there is no excuse for his previous tweets some of them took him by surprise because he could not remember writing them.

This comes after his old tweets – which resurfaced on Wednesday – saw him swipe at former Presidents John Mahama, John Agyekum Kufour and President Akufo-Addo.

He also openly talked about his “relationship” with TV show host Anita Akuffo back in primary school and many others that people find offensive.

He also made comments about TV presenter Delay, actors John Dumelo, Yvonne Nelson and Jackie Appiah.

KiDi apologised to the public admitting that at the time he was not only young but ignorant and did not understand the repercussions of his words and actions.

“I tweeted things that were inappropriate and unkind. As I mature, I came to be extremely regretful of these actions and how they affected the parties involved,” the ‘Gyal Dem Sugar’ hitmaker wrote.

Opening up on how he has grown to be a much better person KiDi said that “a lot of the things and values we hold now, we had to go through certain things in life to arrive at this place that we are, we had to unlearn a lot of things we grew up with and relearn certain things to also know that this is not okay.”

The singer added that he hopes the celebrities whom he wrote about would understand his old tweets do not represent who he is today as a person.

“I am guessing and hoping that they know that this was a young foolish boy. I wasn’t even KiDi was Nana Dwamena who just had a phone and was misbehaving so I am hoping they can see through all of that and know that I wasn’t the person I was at the time,” he said.

KiDi added that “you live, we make the mistakes, we learn through them and through learning, we become better people.”

  • My comment on Dumelo twisted Ayokor Botchwey

Member of Parliament(MP) for Anyaa Sowutuom and Foreign Affairs Minister Shirley Ayokor Botchwey has condemned attempts by some political opportunists for trying to take advantage of the comments she made at Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency recently.

Shirley Ayokor Botchwey while campaigning for her colleague Lydia Seyram Alhassan in the Ayawaso said “Parliament is for serious minded people and not people who have done some movies and think they are popular”.

She added further “It is a serious place, I will tell him, the laws of the country are enacted in parliament. If our President can continue his job very well, he needs Lydia Alhassan in Parliament to do the job so that all you need as a constituency will be easily given to you”.

Her comment has received a lot of attention with some players in the creative arts industry seeing its an insult to the industry.

But a statement from the Lawmaker and Minister said what she meant by her comment was that it does not take only popularity to win an election.

According to her, any attempt by political opportunists to take advantage of her comment should be treated with the contempt it deserves because she has over the years supported the Creative Arts Industry and is aware of some good lawmakers who the industry has produced.

She used the opportunity to reassure members of the industry of her respect and continued support for the industry.
