  • 20 nominations, zero wins – Snoop Dogg calls attention to his lack of Grammy wins

20 nominations, zero wins – Snoop Dogg calls attention to his lack of Grammy wins

Snoop Dogg is distressed over his lack of Grammy wins despite several nominations.

On Monday, one day after the 2023 edition of the Recording Academy’s annual ceremony, Snoop shared an Instagram post highlighting a list of fellow rap artists’ career wins, including Jay-Z (who has 24 Grammy trophies to his name) and Kendrick Lamar (who has 17).

“20 nominations. O wins,” Snoop wrote in the caption alongside a trio of emoji.

A number of fans and fellow artists subsequently hopped into the comments to express their disbelief, including Jamie Foxx.

“You deserve that [and] more my G!” Foxx said.

To be clear, the Recording Academy says that Snoop has received 16 nominations throughout his prolific run of releases. The most recent of these nominations was for Snoop’s involvement in Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly. At this Sunday’s ceremony, Kendrick took home the Best Rap Album award for his latest release, Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers.

This isn’t the first time Snoop has pointed out his lack of Grammys. Just last year, for example, he shared an IG update in which he blithely told that year’s nominees to “have fun” at the ceremony while noting his numerous winless nominations.

Ahead of this year’s broadcast, Snoop performed as part of the Recording Academy’s Black Music Collective event in honor of Dr. Dre. Others honored at the pre-Grammys party included Missy Elliott and Lil Wayne.

  • Tina Knowles addresses reports of Jay-Z’s interest in becoming NFL team owner

Jay-Z would indeed make for a solid NFL team owner, Tina Knowles says.

As TMZ shared over the weekend, a paparazzo briefly caught up with Beyoncé’s mother about the possibility, notably citing reports from earlier this month about Jay and Amazon’s Jeff Bezos allegedly being interested in buying the Washington Commanders.

When asked about her son-in-law and daughter potentially being “in the conversation” to buy a team, more specifically the Commanders, Knowles provided a broad answer about her confidence in their respective choices.

“I have no doubt that anything they put their minds to do, they can do it well,” Knowles said, as seen in the video below. “I don’t know anything about it though.”

Asked to elaborate further, Knowles understandably declined, offering a quick “that’s enough” to the paparazzo.

It’s a brief response, expectedly, but again revives the topic of Jay’s name indeed being mentioned in recent reports about the future of the Commanders. For example, the Washington Post reported earlier this month that Bezos could be recruiting Jay-Z as an investor in a potential bid for the Commanders.

Also this month, Dan and Tanya Snyder were confirmed to have started the process of an eventual sale, namely by hiring Bank of America Securities. Per a team rep’s comments to the Associated Press at the time, “all options” were being considered.

Meanwhile, Jay-Z is currently up for five more possible Grammys, with the DJ Khaled collab “God Did” having scored nominations in multiple categories at the 65th edition of the annual awards show. For a full list of the 2023 nominees, hit this link.

  • Nas addresses Jay-Z sharing grammy photo on same day as ‘Kings Disease III’ tracklist

Nas is very aware that Jay-Z shared an image of him and all his Grammys on the same day he dropped the tracklist for Kings Disease III.

“Everyone who’s in Hip Hop is familiar with your beef with Jay-Z, what it was,” The Daily Show host Trevor Noah told Nas. “And I loved on here that you talk about that beef, what it was, how it disappeared, but how you’ll still text him saying ‘you know this isn’t over right?’”

“When I released the tracklist for the album the other day, he released a picture with all his Grammys,” Nas added. “Shout out to him.”

The song Noah was referring to was the album’s third track “Thun,” where Nas raps: “No beef or rivals, they playing ‘Ether’ on TIDAL, brothers can do anything when they decide to. In a Range Rover, dissecting bars from ‘Takeover.’ Sometimes I text Hova like, ‘N***a, this ain’t over.’”

Nas and Jay-Z have long reconciled since they traded shots on diss tracks like “Supa Ugly,” “Takeover,” “Ether” and “Last Real N***a Alive” in the early 2000s. The legendary duo squashed their beef on stage in 2005 during Jay-Z’s I Declare War Tour stop in New Jersey, and have since gone on to work together numerous times, including most recently on DJ Khaled’s “Sorry Not Sorry.”

However, Nas has always been open about the competitive spirit between him and his former rival, and in a recent FacTime call with Hov said their time together on “Sorry Not Sorry” inspired the Queens-bred legend to re-examine his bars.

“Alright, I’m just here tweaking lines and shit,” Nas said on the phone. “I’m in here, curating, rewriting four bars here and there … Oh, no no no. I gotta come back! Yo bro, this is one. The queen at the end, the harmonies, that gave me chills … this is definitely one for the books.”

  • The top four Black wealthiest hip hop stars of 2022 revealed

The top five (including four Black artists) richest hip-hop stars amassed a combined wealth of $3.8 billion, according to a report by former Forbes editor Zack O’Malley.

The report also noted that Diddy has overtaken Kanye West on the list of 2022’s wealthiest Hip Hop artists. West, who recently changed his name to Ye, saw his net worth drop to $400 million after a series of antisemitic tweets saw major brands cut ties with him, including German sneaker brand Adidas.

His deal with Adidas reportedly accounted for $1.4 billion of his nearly $2 billion net worth. “Adidas does not tolerate antisemitism and any other sort of hate speech. Ye’s recent comments and actions have been unacceptable, hateful and dangerous, and they violate the company’s values of diversity and inclusion, mutual respect and fairness,” Adidas said in a statement.

Also, with $1.5 billion, Jay-Z takes the top spot as the wealthiest Hip Hop artist. Below are the top four Black richest hip-hop artists:

    Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter ($1.5 billion)

Jay-Z is the wealthiest hip-hop artist with a fortune of $1.5 billion. The bulk of his wealth comes from his Armand de Brignac champagne and Roc Nation Entertainment Company. He also has stakes in startups like Rihanna’s Savage x Fenty lingerie line among others.

    Sean “Diddy” Combs ($1 billion)

Diddy replaced West on the list with $1 billion, thanks to his Cîroc partnership with Diageo. He also has stakes in DeLeón tequila and Revolt, along with his music catalog, startup investments and other assets. Diddy becomes hip-hop’s third billionaire.

    Kanye “Ye” West ($500 million)

West lost nearly $1.5 billion of his net worth after making a series of antisemitic tweets, although he has since apologized. He currently has a 5% stake in ex-wife Kim Kardashian’s $3.2 billion shapewear line. There is also his lucrative music catalog and Yeezy, his battered but still valuable footwear line.

Andre “Dr. Dre” Young ($400 million)

The legendary Dr. Dre comes in fourth with $400 million thanks to his Beats partnership, music catalog and ongoing projects. According to O’Malley, documents from Dre’s recent divorce revealed his net worth had dwindled to just over $450 million before the first half of a $100 million settlement was paid to his ex (the second half is said to be due by the end of 2022).

  • How Akufo-Addo forced peers to watch Jay-Z, Beyonce perform at Global Citizen concert in 2018

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in 2018 caused his colleagues to sit through a Global Citizen Festival held in South Africa.

The circumstances under which this happened was narrated by deputy Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts minister, Mark Okraku Mantey who was speaking on Metro TV’s Good Evening Ghana programe.

The 2018 concert took place at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg, and was part of the Global Citizen group’s annual concert held in New York Central Park and concurrently in another major African city.

The particular edition was also connected to the Mandela 100 celebration, so it had a number of African leaders in attendance.

“At the time, most of the presidents were tired and so they wanted to find a way asking them to leave, but the host who is the South African president couldn’t leave until they get the other people to accept that they also wanted to leave.

“So, they were unlucky that they spoke to President Akufo-Addo first and in the diplomatic way that is how they operate. ‘O Mr. President, would you want to leave?’

“He says no, ‘I am waiting for Jay-Z and Beyonce.’ They were the headliners. So, the rest of the presidents have to wait, they couldn’t leave, that is the history to president Akufo-Addo’s visit to that event.

“After the event, he showed interest, that he wouldn’t mind seeing this in Ghana,” this was how the organizers slated it for Ghana this year.

The September 24, 2022 concert has, however, become the center of controversy after it emerged that the president was booed by a section of the crowd. It has led to political ‘football’ with the governing and opposition parties in the middle of the fight.

The edition Akufo-Addo attended was held on Dec. 2, 2018, with performances from the likes of Beyoncé, JAY-Z, Sho Madjozi, Cassper Nyovest, Ed Sheeran, and many other incredible acts.

  • Stormzy stopped Jay-Z rapping on an Ed Sheeran song

Stormzy has revealed how he prevented Jay-Z from appearing on his song with Ed Sheeran, Take Me Back to London.

The US rapper wanted to appear on the track, but the grime star turned down his “number one hero inspiration” because he thought it was a bad fit.

“I felt proper bad because I was like, ‘You’re saying no to Jay-Z!’” he told ITV’s Jonathan Ross show.

“Jay-Z was super proud and super shocked and taken aback by the fact that this kid told him,” he added.

The song, which appears on Sheeran’s No. 6 Collaborations Project, went on to top the UK singles chart for five weeks in September and October.

It finds the two Glastonbury headliners reminiscing about their London days, “hitting raves” and ordering “packets of crisps with my pint”.

Jay-Z was in the studio as the track came together, Stormzy told Jonathan Ross in an interview that’s scheduled to air on Saturday [30 November].

“Before that I loved Take Me Back To London because I thought it was just going to be me and Ed,” he said, “and then Ed was like, ‘Jay is getting on it.’

“It blew my mind. Jay-Z is my number one hero inspiration.

“We got into the studio and we were writing for this song and then he just stops the music and he said, ‘Tell me about London, I need some inspiration.’”

Stormzy said he and his manager had a “powerful, beautiful” conversation, “talking about everything from black culture, community [to] music, his journey, my journey…

“It was the greatest conversation of my life.”

‘He couldn’t believe it’ Stormzy continued: “At the end he’s smiling, we were probably talking for an hour and he goes, ‘So what do you think of the song?’

“I was like, ‘I love this song but you being on the song changes everything’.

He went on: “‘If you didn’t ask me this, I would have just written my verse and we would have done it and I would have never questioned it, but now that you’ve asked me, no.’

“I was like, ‘I know how it goes, Mr Z. You are the most brilliant, busy man and I will probably never get this opportunity ever again but hand on my heart, I don’t think this is the right song for us. I don’t know why I’m saying this to you but this is not the song.’”

Describing Jay-Z’s astonished response, Stormzy said: “He fully understood [but] he couldn’t believe that I did it.”

But the session wasn’t a complete bust: Footage of Jay-Z and Stormzy’s conversation was used in the introductory video for Stormzy’s historic Glastonbury performance this summer.

The rapper recently announced his second album, Heavy Is The Head, will be released on 13 December. He has also revealed plans for an extensive, 55-date world tour in 2020, with shows scheduled in the UK, US, Canada, China, Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Nigeria and Ghana.
