Khan Younis: Second city of Gaza reportedly surrounded by Israeli forces

The Israeli army says its troops have surrounded Khan Younis, which is the biggest city in the southern part of Gaza.

Soldiers have moved further into the city where they think Hamas leaders are hiding with hostages.

People who live there said that big military vehicles closed the only road that goes out of the city towards the coast. This means they can’t escape to the south.

There was heavy fighting near the two big hospitals in the city.

Funerals were happening for some of the 24 Israeli soldiers who were killed on Monday. It was the deadliest day for the Israel Defense Forces since they started their ground offensive in Gaza 12 weeks ago.

In the last day, 195 Palestinians died in Gaza, according to the health ministry run by Hamas.

The government says that over 25,400 people, mostly children and women, have died in the war between Hamas and Israel.

The attack happened when Hamas gunmen from Gaza crossed into southern Israel. Around 1,300 people were killed, mostly civilians, and about 250 others were taken hostage.

Israeli soldiers moved into southern Gaza in early December after mostly gaining control of Hamas areas in the north.

In a few days, they were said to have arrived in the middle of Khan Younis, where hundreds of thousands of people who had left northern areas were staying.

However, the soldiers have met strong opposition from Hamas’s Khan Younis Brigade. It is one of the two most powerful groups in the group, which is labeled as a terrorist organization by Israel, the UK, and other countries.

The Israeli military has increased its efforts in recent days, using airstrikes and artillery to attack different parts of the city. Many people have been killed, and tanks have moved into the western and central areas of the city.

On Tuesday, the IDF said that its soldiers surrounded Khan Yunis and did a big operation in the area.

The soldiers fought in close combat, used air strikes, and worked together to defeat lots of terrorists.

The IDF told people in western Khan Younis to go to the al-Mawasi area by the sea to stay safe.

However, some people said that tanks were blocking the road, so they couldn’t go to Rafah where about a million people are staying for safety. Rafah is near the border with Egypt.

“I want to go to Rafah, but the tanks are close to the coast and shooting towards the west,” said Shaban, who has four kids and works as an electrical engineer, to Reuters news agency.

The World Health Organization is very worried about reports of hospitals being attacked in Khan Younis.

On Tuesday, the Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) said that a person who was not in the military was killed by an Israeli drone at the entrance of Al-Amal Hospital, which is managed by PRCS, and that other people were hurt when shells hit its nearby headquarters.

“The situation is still very risky. ” This morning, the Palestine Red Crescent’s headquarters on the fourth floor was bombed with artillery. “Israeli drones kept shooting at people at al-Amal Hospital,” said Nebal Farsakh, a spokeswoman from Ramallah, in an interview with the BBC.

“Many scared and worried people who have been forced to leave their homes are staying in our buildings. ”

The IDF did not comment right away, but they have said before that Hamas fighters hide among civilians and use medical buildings for their operations.

Ms Farsakh also mentioned that ambulances are having a hard time getting to injured people and taking them to hospitals. They are being instructed to take serious cases to Deir al-Balah, in central Gaza.

She said that the Al-Amal and Nasser Medical Complex in Gaza are very crowded and have too many patients.

Dr Haytham Ahmad, who works in Nasser’s emergency department, told the BBC that they had to perform many amputations and some patients couldn’t get anesthesia because there wasn’t enough supplies.

“These injuries are very serious and have caused severe crushing. Only a little bit of skin and muscle are still attached. ” He said we are trying to use only a little anesthesia in this situation.

A spokesperson from the World Health Organization said that Nasser is surrounded and the 400 patients, medical staff, and displaced civilians there can’t leave.

Gaza’s health ministry said that Israeli forces shot at the top floors of the hospital’s surgery and emergency buildings.

A video made by a Palestinian journalist shows gunfire hitting the hospital’s western corner and another video shows smoke rising from an area to the south.

The IDF said they didn’t know about the event when asked by AFP news agency.
Palestinian people were told to leave their homes by the Israeli military and were seen walking along the coastal road in western Khan Younis on 23 January 2024.

Later, the leader of the United Nations, António Guterres, said that the people in Gaza are suffering a really bad situation. He said that everyone there is experiencing a lot of destruction, and it’s happening very fast and at a level that hasn’t been seen before.

He asked again for a quick break in fighting to help people in need.

Qatar’s spokesperson for foreign affairs said they are talking seriously with both groups about a possible agreement. A Palestinian official told the BBC that a group from Hamas went to Cairo to talk about new ideas with Egypt’s intelligence minister.

Israel has not said no to the idea of a two-month break from fighting, which would include letting go of hostages and Palestinian prisoners. However, there are reports that have already been turned down by Hamas. They want a ceasefire that will last indefinitely.

Israel claims Hamas command in northern Gaza has been destroyed

The Israeli army says it has finished taking apart Hamas’s leadership in the northern Gaza Strip.

Army representative Daniel Hagari said that Palestinian fighters are now only active in the area occasionally and without leaders.

He said Israel had killed about 8,000 fighters in northern Gaza. The BBC cannot confirm this number by themselves.

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) are working to stop Hamas in the southern and central parts of Gaza.

According to the health ministry run by Hamas, Israel has killed more than 22,000 people since the war started. On Saturday, it reported that there were over 120 deaths in the last day.

The land has been destroyed and almost all of the 2. 3 million people have been forced to leave.

Israel’s attack began after gunmen from Hamas surprised attacked southern Israel on 7 October. They killed 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and took about 240 people as hostages.

More than 120 people are still there after some were let go in a truce last year.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said again on Saturday that Israel will keep fighting to get rid of Hamas, bring back our hostages, and make sure Gaza can’t hurt Israel anymore.

We have to set aside everything. Mr Netanyahu said in a statement that they will keep fighting until they win completely.

At the same time, six people from Palestine died when Israeli soldiers attacked the city of Jenin in the West Bank, according to the Palestinian health ministry. Palestinian news reported that a lot of Israeli soldiers went to the area for the raid.

Apart from the raid, Israeli planes also bombed a group of people in the West Bank. This happened after an Israeli military vehicle hit a bomb and one officer died.

Jenin has experienced many Israeli attacks in the last 18 months, and they have gotten worse since the war in Gaza began on 7 October.

In the north of Israel, Hezbollah shot many rockets at Israel on Saturday. They said it was to retaliate for the killing of a Hamas leader in Beirut.

Saleh al-Arouri was killed in a possible attack by Israel in the capital of Lebanon.

The Iranian-supported Lebanese group says it attacked an air traffic control center in Meron with 62 rockets. The Israeli army said it saw about 40 rockets being fired from Lebanon and it fired back.

Antony Blinken, the US Secretary of State, said he wants to make sure the fighting in Gaza doesn’t spread and to stop a never-ending cycle of violence.

Mr Blinken was talking in Greece at the beginning of a trip that will last for a week in the area. He went to Jordan and will meet King Abdullah on Sunday. Then he will go to Qatar.

IDF claims to have killed four Palestinians in West Bank

The Israeli army killed four Palestinians in what it called an anti-terror raid near Qalqilya in the northern occupied West Bank.

Azzun residents said the four people who died were between the ages of 18 and 29 and their bodies were taken away by Israeli forces.

A witness told the BBC that the raid took place from before midnight until early morning.

Tensions have been high in the West Bank since Hamas attacks on October 7 sparked war in the Gaza Strip.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas recently warned that the territory could “explode. ”

The Israeli army said in a statement on X, formerly known as Twitter, that in Azzun, “terrorists shot and threw explosives at our forces.

Fighters identified the court house where the team was hiding the terrorist and at the end of the gunfight, they killed four terrorists.

Palestinian news agency Wafa said on Tuesday morning four men “were shot dead in clashes that broke out when Israeli occupation forces stormed the town.

” Citing Palestinian security sources, he said soldiers “fired live bullets, stun grenades and tear gas at local residents. ”

“There have been attacks every day since October 7 even though there are no activists in the area,” one Azzun resident told the BBC.

A total of seven people were killed and there were many arrests.

IDF reports finding rocket launchers close to UN school

The Israeli army claims to have discovered explosive devices positioned along the Gaza Strip’s coast in a statement that includes the most recent information from Gaza. The statement stated that the explosives were neutralised by IDF marine, aviation, and ground units during combined operations.

In the southern city of Khan Yunis, where Hamas was purportedly hiding its weaponry, troops launched an attack on a few structures. It added that they discovered and removed launch pits and facilities for producing weapons in the central Gaza Strip.

According to the statement, “those who were armed and identified driving towards the forces” were murdered by Israeli troops near Jabalia, in the northern Gaza region. Furthermore, they asserted that they discovered rocket launchers in the middle of the Bureij refugee camp, next to a UNRWA school.

Israel Defense Force declares ‘local tactical pause’ in Rafah for ninety minutes

The Israeli army said on X(formerly Twitter) that there will be a short break in the fighting today in the southern part of Gaza.

“A temporary stop in fighting will happen today in the Rafah area until 2:00pm [12:00 GMT]. This is to let more humanitarian aid come in,” it says.

Another message in Arabic said that the break would happen in the El Geneina neighborhood.

These breaks happen a lot and have been named in different areas of Gaza. Not long ago, Rafah was a pretty safe place where there was not much fighting.

Since the truce with Hamas ended last Friday, the IDF has been attacking the area more often.

  • Portion of major route in southern Gaza unsafe

Portion of major route in southern Gaza unsafe

The Israeli army said that people in Gaza should not use a part of the main Salah al-Din Road.

The map on social media shows an area northeast of Khan Younis city.

This was said by Avichay Adree, who is a spokesperson for the IDF and speaks Arabic.

He says the place is like a battlefield now and very dangerous.

He says the IDF will let people move down south from areas north of Khan Younis using the coastal road.

As we mentioned before, the IDF has told people in a big part of the Khan Younis area to go south today.

Just to remind you, at the beginning of the war, Israel told the people in northern Gaza to leave and go to Khan Younis for their safety.

  • First Friday prayers held in public in Khan Younis

First Friday prayers held in public in Khan Younis

Things are calmer now in southern Israel after many weeks of chaos. It seems like the ceasefire is working well based on what we can see and hear.

That is really impacting the people living in Gaza. We have heard that the first public Friday prayers since the war started on October 7th will be held at a football stadium in Khan Younis.

The Israeli army has been dropping papers in Gaza to tell people not to go north. It’s quiet now, so people might try to go back home to get their things and see if their homes are still there.

The IDF told them to stay in the south of the Gaza strip. They say the northern part is still a war zone and advise people not to go back there during the break in fighting.

  • Israel has started its ground operation in Gaza

Israel has started its ground operation in Gaza

The Israeli army started their complete ground operation in Gaza on Friday. They sent tanks, bulldozers, infantrymen, and combat engineers into the area.

But instead of moving quickly towards Gaza City, Israeli forces have been moving slowly towards the enclave’s most populated area.

Based on videos, photos, and reports from CNN teams at the scene, it seems that Israeli forces entered three main areas across the border.

The first one is located at the top left corner of the strip. On Saturday morning, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) shared a video showing bulldozers moving sand near the seashore. There is a hole in the fence surrounding Gaza, and it seems like Israeli vehicles have entered through it.

However, there are also signs that Israeli forces are near the ocean in a more southern area than this. On Sunday, a video went around showing Israeli soldiers holding a flag on top of a vacation hotel. CNN identified the location of the hotel as Atatra, which is about two miles south of the fence.

On Tuesday, the Israeli army shared pictures of soldiers going further into the Strip, close to the Al Shati, or Beach, refugee camp. This means they are now only about three miles away from the center of Gaza City.

Israeli forces seem to have entered Gaza from the northeast corner of the Strip near the town of Beit Hanoun, according to videos and satellite images. A video shared by the Israeli military and found by CNN shows many soldiers walking on sandy ground. In another part of the video, a large machine called a bulldozer clears a path in the sand to remove dangerous explosives.

Videos show empty buildings that are badly damaged because of the Israeli airstrikes before the ground operation. There are no people shown in the video, which means they either left or went away before the Israeli military came. However, a news team from CNN that was close to the Israeli border heard occasional gunfire from machine guns, and on Tuesday morning they heard multiple explosions coming from the same place.

The CNN team said that there are more Israeli military vehicles in the area, and it seems like the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have extended their ground operation.

Finally, on Monday, a new video was found suggesting that there might be another way to enter about 10 miles down to the south, on the eastern side. The video, recorded by a Palestinian journalist named Yousif Al Saifi, showed an Israeli tank shooting at a car on the main road in Gaza Strip called Salah Al Din road.

CNN found the exact location of the video near the Netzarim junction, which is named after an Israeli settlement. Israel sees this location as important to control, as it helps separate the north and south parts of Gaza.

The junction is located near Gaza City and close to Wadi Gaza, a waterway. Israel has advised people in Gaza to move south to Wadi Gaza for safety from attacks.
