The Houston area is trying to clean up and restore power to many people after dangerous storms. At least seven people have died. It’s also very hot and there is a warning about smog which could make people sick.
The weatherman from the US National Weather Service said that it will be very hot over the next few days, with temperatures reaching 32C and feeling even hotter, possibly up to 38C.
“We think the heat will get stronger gradually. ” Chenard said that the heat risk will go up from Tuesday to Friday.
The heat index tells us how hot it feels when you take into account both the temperature and the humidity.
“The Houston weather service warned not to work too hard during the cleanup. ”
On top of the hot weather, Houston might have bad air quality this weekend.
There could be a lot of rain in eastern Louisiana and central Alabama on Saturday, and some areas in Louisiana might flood.
The Houston Health Department will give out 400 free portable air conditioners to older people, people with disabilities and those who take care of disabled children to help them stay cool in the hot weather.
Five places where people can go to cool off were opened – four in Houston and one in Kingwood.
Hundreds of thousands of people still don’t have electricity.
The big storms on Thursday caused a lot of damage in Houston and made it hard for people to go about their normal business. Strong storms with lots of wind and rain made a big mess in the city. A brick building got badly damaged and there is a lot of broken trees, trash and glass on the streets. A tornado also landed near the northwest Houston area called Cypress.
By midday on Saturday, over half a million homes and businesses in Texas still didn’t have power, according to PowerOutage.us. In Louisiana, 21,000 more customers didn’t have electricity because of strong winds and a possible tornado.
CenterPoint Energy has sent 1,000 workers to the area and needs 5,000 more. They say it will take a few days or more to fix the power in some places. Customers should check if their homes can be safely connected again.
“Bad weather could have damaged CenterPoint Energy’s electric system and customer-owned equipment like the weatherhead, which brings power into homes. ”
Customers need to have a trained electrician fix the problem before we can turn the electricity back on, CenterPoint said.
Power companies are facing a big problem when transmission towers are broken and power lines are down. This is because it affects both the big power lines and the smaller ones that deliver power to homes and businesses. Alexandria von Meier, who knows a lot about energy, says this is not something that happens often. Von Meier said that it is more common for the distribution system to be damaged.
How fast the repairs are done will depend on a few things like how long it takes to check the damage, getting new equipment, road access problems, and workers available.

Girl, 4, murdered by her younger sister as she was playing with an unattended gun
As per officials, a 3-year-old Texas girl used a “unsecured” weapon to shoot and murder her 4-year-old sister on Sunday.
Sheriff Ed Gonzalez of Harris County described the occurrence as “tragic” and “extremely preventable.”
The sheriff claimed that five adults were present in a residence in Houston while the two kids were playing unattended.
The two toddlers were essentially left unaccompanied inside the bedroom at some point, according to the sheriff, when one parent thought the other was minding the other kids.
In the bedroom, the children found a loaded semi-automatic pistol.
‘Family members heard a single gunshot. They ran into the room and found the small toddler, four years old, on the floor unresponsive,’ Sheriff Gonzalez said.
Gonzalez said the adults were able to quickly secure the weapon after the gunshot and call 911, but the injured child was still pronounced dead at the scene.
Neither child has been identified yet. Any charges against the adults in the house have not yet been announced, although Sheriff Gonzalez said charges were ‘very likely’ in this case.
‘Our hearts are broken. Our deputies are pretty shaken up,’ Gonzalez said. ‘The community is impacted when a child loses their life in this way.’
Gonzales emphasized that this kind of incident is preventable if parents follow proper gun safety practices.
‘You’ve got to be sure you’re being a responsible gun owner, securing your weapons in a safe place,’ the sheriff said. ‘It’s got to be more than just telling young kids not to touch the weapons. You know, we’ve got to do a little more. We see far too many tragic situations like this unfold.’
Earlier this year, a six-year-old child in Newport News, Virginia took a legally-purchased firearm from their parents and used it to shoot his teacher in the classroom.
The child’s parent’s insisted the weapon was secured, and admitted that he suffered from an ‘acute disability’ which typically required additional supervision at school.
A month later in Pennsylvania, a mother was arrested when her children found an unsecured firearm and brought it in their backpack on the bus to school.
Nobody was hurt in the Norristown, Pennsylvania incident – children on the bus acted as ‘heroes’ and informed school administrators before the weapon was fired.

Boil-Water Order: Houston lifts order affecting over 2 million people
The boil order had been in effect in the nation’s fourth-largest city since Sunday.
On Tuesday, Houston officials lifted an order requiring more than 2 million people in the nation’s fourth-largest city to boil their tap water before drinking or using it.
The boil order had been in effect since Sunday, when pressure dropped due to a power outage at a purification plant.
The order caused businesses and schools to close, including the Houston Independent School District, which cancelled classes on Monday and Tuesday. However, the order was revoked by the city shortly before 7 a.m. Tuesday.
The city said water quality samples sent to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality confirmed the tap water meets regulatory standards and is safe to drink.
People shop for bottled water after a boil water notice was issued for the entire city of Houston on Sunday. VIA ASSOCIATED PRESS At a news conference Monday, Mayor Sylvester Turner said the city issued the notice, which affects all of Houston and some adjacent areas, in an “abundance of caution” after two transformers — a main one and its backup — “uniquely and coincidentally” failed at a water plant. The problem affected the plant’s ability to treat and pump water into the transmission system, resulting in low pressure.
Because the issue was within the plant’s system, backup power generators would not have made a difference, Turner said. Since the transformers were down, they couldn’t transmit power to the plant.
The power system at the water plant undergoes regular maintenance, Turner said, but he did not give a timeline for how often. The mayor said he has ordered a diagnostic review of the system to understand how the problem was possible and how it can be prevented.
Sixteen sensors marked dips under the minimum pressure levels required by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, 14 of them for only 2 minutes and two of them for nearly 30 minutes, Turner said.
Typically, there is enough pressure for water to flow out of leaky pipes. When pressure is lost, however, contamination like bacteria sitting near pipes can be sucked into the system, creating a health risk.

Energy Minister advertises Ghana’s offshore oil blocks in Houston
Energy Minister, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has led a Ghanaian delegation on an oil and gas roadshow in Houston, Texas in the United States of America.
The Ministry of Energy, supported by the Petroleum Commission, the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation, GOIL and Base Energy, is promoting Ghana’s offshore oil blocks and farm-in opportunities for investment.
Also, the Ghanaian delegation includes two Members of Parliament from both Majority and Minority sides of the House.
The Ghanaian delegation in its engagement on Wednesday, September 21, 2022, highlighted prospects of the Deep-Water Cape Three Points Block, Offshore Cape Three Points South Block and Shallow Water Cape Three Points Block.
It also included the Southwest Saltpond Block as well as the Expanded Shallow Water Tano (ESWT) Block.
In his remarks, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh spoke of the country’s “stable political and business climate, its highly prospective sedimentary basin with its commensurate high exploration success rate, guaranteed and attractive fiscal terms as well as its defined legal and regulatory framework.”
The Energy Minister also used the opportunity to reveal the availability of an existing architecture to support infrastructure-led exploration, which shortens the time between exploration and production.
His comments drew the needed attention from prospective investors for the country’s upstream petroleum space.
He is optimistic that through these engagements, the ministry will secure the necessary deals to drive the country’s needed economic growth.
Due to the possible gains made, Dr Opoku Prempeh has pledged to “deepen these investment-driven engagements at the Africa-Houston Energy Summit, especially as I will join colleague Ministers at a round-table discussion.”
