    Apologize to Ghanaians for collapsing the economy – Jantuah tells Akufo-Addo

    President Akufo-Addo has been advised by prominent Convention People’s Party (CPP) member, Kwame Jantuah to apologize to Ghanaians for the economic suffering they endure.

    He described the financial struggles that resulted in pensioners staging picketings against their enrollment in the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP), which in turn caused multiple business failures and worsened the situation.

    In response to a question about the economic difficulties raised during a discussion on Friday, July 19, on TV3’s New Day program, Mr. Jantuah said that since Ghanaians are tolerant, they will probably accept a sincere apology from Mr. Akufo-Addo.

    “Is this not the first time pensioners have picked? Ask for forgiveness from Ghanaians because Ghanaians are very forgiving, if you accept you that have done something wrong they will forgive you, apologize to them that you haven’t managed the economy well.”

    Regarding good governance, Mr. Jantuah noted that constitutional amendments are necessary to rectify certain flaws in the current governance model.

    He claimed, for example, that the president has been granted far too much authority. This needs to change, he said.

    “The winner takes all concept, is it helping? Local government, is it not centralized at the upper echelons, local government is not working now. if it was a working station in the district we would have been able to handle it.

    “The constitution, this constitution has ruled for over 30 years, there are certain parts of it hurting us today, one of it is executive power, are we ready to look at the executive power?

    “I feel that the next president, the first mindset should be how do we have a government of national unity. There are brains who are sitting on the fence who can come and help.”

    “As we prepare for this year’s elections, we want to assure everyone in Ghana that we will play our role professionally to ensure that peace and security are maintained,” he assured.

    Bernard Allotey Jacobs praised the Chief of Defense Staff during the “Kokrokoo” discussion program on Peace FM, stating,”he’s spoken well and that’s what the international community, investor community, Ghanaians would want to hear that we don’t record violence in the elections”.

    Allotey Jacobs warned politicians not to provoke the Military, stressing “when people are obsessed with power, they know no bounds…People should not provoke the Military. Politicians should not provoke the Military”.

    He advised the political parties to “do the appropriate thing” by training “your polling agents very well and don’t allow your monitoring team who move from one polling station to other to behave as if they are electoral officers to dictate to the EC officials at the polling stations”.

    She criticized the Mahama administration for what she viewed as misplaced priorities, citing an example where a school in Derma, designed to accommodate over 5,000 people, was commissioned despite the local population being fewer than 300 residents.

    “I saw them [government] commissioning a school in Derma. … The population in Derma is not more than 300 people [but] the school that has been put there can house over 5,000 people. Is that what you want your monies to be used for?” she questioned.

    Mrs. Agyeman-Rawlings expressed optimism about her party’s prospects in the upcoming December 7 elections, confident that the existing two-party dominance in Ghana could be overturned.

    “You go to some countries, there are say two or three parties that have entrenched themselves, then suddenly one comes and sees everybody off and they become the government,” she stated.

He admitted that his desperation to showcase his cooking talent led him to fabricate the certificate. “I render a very big apology on this big platform, and I apologise to the world that I am so sorry.     In response to the intense heat, Saudi authorities mandated that all pilgrims stay within their tents during peak heat hours, between noon and 4 p.m. local time.

    Initially, reports of fatalities emerged involving Georgian pilgrims. However, it was later revealed that Ghanaians were also among the heat wave victims.

    According to Sky News, over 1,000 people have now died during the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca.

    “The temperature was so high—above 41 degrees Celsius,” Gomba stated.

    “They asked the authorities to confine us to our camps between noon and 4 p.m. Saudi time. Later, we heard that some Georgians lost their lives in town.

    “At the time, we didn’t even know that some Ghanaians were also going to lose their lives under the conditions said to be related to the heat waves that swept across Saudi Arabia on the day.”

    Gomba mentioned that initial reports suggested 13 Ghanaian nationals had died, although this number was later clarified to six after fingerprint verification at the morgue.

    These fatalities involved individuals suspected of traveling with non-Hajj visas, complicating identification efforts.

    “The forensic centre at the morgue, where the corpses are kept before being buried, had only managed to get six nationals from Ghana.

    “When I asked him how they were doing it, they told me they were using fingerprints, and it was a laborious task,” Gomba explained.

    He concluded, “So, it will take days before the number of Ghanaians who died as a result of the heat wave will be established.

    “Currently, we can say six people died during the heat wave, even though an autopsy report is not yet out regarding the subject.”

    Multidimensional poverty affects 36.7% of the rural population and 43.4% of urban residents, reflecting similar severity levels in both settings.

    Regional Variances

    The Savannah Region stands out with 49.5% of households classified as multidimensionally poor, nearly double the national average. Despite this, the Ashanti Region hosts the highest number of multidimensionally poor individuals, totaling 959,031.

    Employment and Living Conditions

    Employment (32.6%) and living conditions (27.9%) are the foremost factors contributing to multidimensional poverty. Health insurance also plays a critical role, accounting for 21.5% of poverty indicators.

    Female-headed households (27.0%) and younger or older household heads are disproportionately affected by poverty.

    Educational Impact

    Educational attainment significantly influences poverty levels, with households led by individuals who never attended school facing higher poverty rates. Those with basic education experience a poverty incidence of 20.0%, contrasting sharply with those holding tertiary education (7.1%).

    Agricultural households report the highest poverty rates (34.3%), while those in services and industry sectors fare comparatively better.

    Former President, John Dramani Mahama has restated his plea for Ghanaians not to be swayed into keeping the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in power come December 7, 2024.

    Mahama accused Akufo-Addo administration of orchestrating efforts to pave the way for his Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to assume presidency, aiming to shield themselves from the corruption allegations they face.

    In a live broadcast on social media dubbed ‘Mahama Conversations’ on Sunday, June 9, 2024, Mahama urged voters to elect him, promising to hold current government officials accountable for their alleged wrongdoings.

    He pledged to conduct thorough investigations into corruption allegations, not sparing officials from his own government if found guilty.

    ‘Mahama Conversations,’ urged Ghanaians to vote for him so that he would hold appointees of the current government accountable for all the wrongdoings they have committed.

    “This change will also involve the most far-reaching and detailed investigation of the many allegations of corruption and scandals leveled against public officials and their families and friends.

    “This change will help prevent this administration’s plan to force the compliant vice president on us to cover up for them and evade accountability,” he said.

    Mahama stressed that his administration would implement stringent anti-corruption measures, ensuring transparency and accountability across the board, regardless of political affiliation.

    “But, as I have stated, this intense spotlight of accountability is not only for appointees of this administration.

    “It will also be used to punish individuals in my own administration who engage in similar misconduct. The same anti-corruption measures and tools I will use to investigate and punish NPP government appointees will also apply to my own appointees. In essence, in Ghanaian terms, ‘the stick that is used on Techie will also be used on Barh’,” he noted.

    A truck carrying spaghetti overturned on the Amasaman-Nsawam Highway, which is currently under construction, resulting in significant traffic congestion and leaving commuters stranded.

    The incident took place on Tuesday morning following a light rain shower in parts of Accra.

    According to reports, the driver lost control while attempting to navigate the muddy and uneven road, causing the truck to overturn and spill its load of spaghetti.

    A video shared on X by Edhub showed witnesses and commuters at the scene taking advantage of the situation by collecting the spilled spaghetti packs.

    They used bags, sacks, polyethylene, and any available containers to gather the products.

    Ghanaian author, Akosua Bame has issued a thought-provoking critique of Ghana’s democratic system, suggesting that citizens have been misled about the true nature of their political freedom.

    She said this while speaking at a public lecture held on Thursday, June 6, 2024, at the British Council on the theme “Looking Beyond the Fourth Republic Towards Nation-Building,” the author of “The Mindset Revolution” 

    “For decades, Ghanaians have been programmed not to think for themselves; They have been deceived with the ideology of democracy perceiving that because they can insult a leader on a radio or televised programme they are truly enjoying the benefit of democracy,” she stated.

    Madam Bame argued that this perceived freedom to criticize leaders on public platforms gives a false sense of democratic participation. 

    She believes that such actions are often seen as the hallmark of democracy, yet they do not translate into meaningful political change or accountability.

    The author highlighted that even empowering declarations, like “be citizens and not spectators,” quickly lose their impact once those in power achieve their goals.

    According to her, these slogans are designed to placate the public and fade away as soon as political objectives are met.

     “They are truly enjoying the benefits of democracy even when declarations such as be citizens and not spectators are made; they fizzle out immediately that the power is attained. What has been the response when issues have emerged with the current government? 

    She questioned  the current government’s response to public dissent, particularly when significant issues arise. 

    She referenced the widespread calls for the resignation of the then-Minister of Finance, a demand that was largely ignored.

     Instead of being removed, the minister was “rewarded with another portfolio” on January 10, 2023. 

    Following the resignation of Alan Kyerematen, the Finance Minister was appointed as the caretaker minister of the Ministry of Trade and Industry.

    Government Spokesperson, Kofi Tonto, has admitted that the Akufo-Addo-led administration has failed in meeting the needs and expectations of Ghanaians.

    According to him, although the current government acknowledges its shortcomings, it is working tirelessly to do better in the future.


    Making an appearance on Peace FM’s Kokrooko Show he touted some of government’s achievements, emphasising that while it has played a role in national development, its contributions have been partial rather than complete.

    He noted that out of 94,000km road infrastructure, the government has repaired 12,000km of road networks. This he said can be better.

    He added that politicians should embrace accountability by acknowledging their mistakes, addressing the challenges they face, and actively seek solutions.

    “Politicians must embrace accountability by admitting their mistakes, tackling the challenges they encounter, and actively pursuing solutions. We acknowledge the economic instability and the progress in repairing 12,000km out of 94,000km of road networks.

    “Nevertheless, there is still much to be done, and we have the capability to accomplish more. We also recognize our shortcomings in nationwide hospital construction. While the government has contributed to national development, we acknowledge that our efforts have been only partially fulfilled,” he added.

    Popular Ghanaian musician and socialite, Sam Safo popularly known as Showboy, has vowed to revisit certain bad habits of the past if  he doesn’t receive the necessary attention and support from Ghanaians to succeed in the music industry.

    In an interview with Adom FM, he indicated that before embarking on his music journey he resorted to money rituals, fraudulent activities and other negative vices in order to make ends meet.

    However, he mentioned that finding a talent in music gave him hope, thus, created an avenue for him to escape from these bad habits.

    According to him, he was stuck in them due to the  limited job opportunities in the country, as such, his music career is the best chance for a positive future.

    He added that Ghanaians’ encouragement and backing will go a long way in determining the execution of his plan B. 

    “I urge all Ghanaians to support my music journey because without it, I may be tempted to resort to fraudulent activities, money rituals, and other negative habits from my past. I’ve struggled with these vices before, and I don’t want to return to that dark path. With limited job opportunities in the country, my music career is my best chance for a positive future. Your support will determine whether I stay on this path or risk falling back into a life of crime, including armed robbery. Your encouragement and backing mean everything to me,” he added.

    Showboy was sentenced to six years in prison in March 2019 for stabbing a US-based Ghanaian musician during a tussle.

    Although the musician, Junior, survived the stabbing, he was later killed in a robbery attack in 2021. At the time of Junior’s death, many accused Showboy’s associates of being involved in the crime.

    However, Showboy has since been released from prison. In a recent video shared on social media, he was seen on the shores of Ghana. Announcing his return on Instagram, the former AMG group co-founder posted a video of himself at the beach, performing a ritual cleanse.

    “I am back to pay homage to all the gods and my ancestors. I am back,” he said.

    In the caption accompanying his post, Showboy, who disclosed that his mental health has been affected by the entire ordeal, thanked everyone who stood by him.

    The Akufo-Addo administration is squeezing the last drop from every Ghanaian to fund the President’s National Cathedral dream, according to former Ghana School of Law Director Kwaku Ansa-Asare.

    Mr. Ansa-Asare described the Akufo-Addo government as the most corrupt in Ghana’s history, highlighting the substantial amount of taxpayers’ money invested in the President’s personal pledge to build a national cathedral.

    “We want to build the Cathedral, so, we take the monies. They used the Cathedral to milk us. the government is milking the ordinary Ghanaian,” he complained.

    In January 2023, Dr. Paul Opoku Mensah, the Executive Director of the National Cathedral Secretariat, denied that any government-allocated funds for the cathedral project had gone missing.

    At the project site, he informed President Nana Akufo-Addo and the media on Tuesday, January 2, 2023, that:

    “For purposes of clarity, I want to report a verbatim memo I sent on this issue dated 19th January 2022 and addressed to the Clerk of Parliament.”

    “The indication was that the government has given us GHS339 million and we could account for GHS225 million leaving GHS114 million missing.”

    ”Here, I quote what I wrote to the Clerk. ‘As we indicated to the Committee on Thursday, December 15, 2022, the total amount paid by the government of Ghana to the National Cathedral project is GHS339 million. This total is made up of the following: the amount paid directly to the National Cathedral Secretariat is GHS225 million. The amount paid directly to the Consultant, Adjaye Associates & Design Team is GHS113.040.54.67 million. The two payments total GHS339.003.064.86’.”

    Dr Opoku Mensah, thus, dispelled claims that some monies allocated for the construction of the cathedral cannot be accounted for.

    “So, there are no missing funds that could not be accounted for. Secondly, the detailed account for these funds was provided to Parliament on December 15, 2022, by the Secretariat. In the case of the accounting from the Secretariat, this involves among others, total payments made to the contractor, and total payments made to the Bible Museum and Biblical Gardens Design Team.”

    He also conveyed the secretariat’s dissatisfaction with certain Members of Parliament for, in his words, misrepresenting the project’s realities.

    “While projects of this nature will always have discontent, we are nonetheless concerned about the misrepresentations particularly when it comes from Members of Parliament.”

    “For instance, the continued misrepresentation of the contract to the consultants is worrying as none of the amount bandied around comes anywhere near the contract amount.”

    “Rather than 34% that they said we’d paid the architect, actually, the contract figure is 12.5% when the Ministry of Works and Housing allows for 15.5%. And the 12.5% will not change irrespective of what happens to the total cost.”

    “More critically, the contract is not for an architect, but for a set of consultants’ services involving 15 international and Ghanaian firms of which Sir David Adjaye Associates is the lead consultant,” he said.

    In the 2023 budget, government allocated a sum of GHS80million towards the construction of the cathedral, however, the Minority succeeded in disapproving it.

    In the view of Mr Ansa-Asare, scandals like the cathedral saga, are a testament to how endemic corruption has been in the Akufo-Addo government.

    “I don’t have the statistics but watching the political terrain, and the various approaches to the fight against corruption, I would say that this is the worst government we have ever had to combat corruption,” he told Accra-based Citi FM in an interview.

    Comparing this government to others in the Fourth Republic, Mr Ansa-Asare scored it ‘F’ as far as corruption fight is concerned.

    “At least, I have witnessed Rawlings, Kufuor, Mills and Mahama. If I have to score them and award them marks, the last and worst will be the current government, followed by John Mahama’s government. Mills will be first, Kufuor second, Rawlings third, Akufo-Addo last, in terms of grade one to four.”

    Former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu has criticized his successor, Kissi Agyebeng, for misleading Ghanaians by claiming to save millions of Ghana Cedis from payroll audits.

    Mr Amidu finds the report released by the Office of the Special Prosecutor on the payroll audit nauseating.

    “It is extremely worrisome that a non-existent entity had been designated as a functioning District Assembly Primary School and the data of the artificially created staff had found its way into the government payroll system for regular payments,” the report said.

    “Further, some headteachers and heads of units were validating some persons whose whereabouts were unknown to them. Egregiously, some validators were validating persons who were, to the knowledge of the validators, deceased, retired or vacated their posts.

    “Out of the sampled high-risk number of 1,265 persons represented on the payroll, the joint investigation and assessment cleared 1,020 persons as regularly validated. The Special Prosecutor promptly unfroze the blocked salaries of the verified regularly validated persons upon the timeous clearance by the joint team, and these persons have been restored on the payroll system. A total amount of Two Million Eight Hundred and Fifty-Four Thousand One Hundred and Forty-Four cedis Eighty pesewas (GHC2,854,144.80) was traced as representing unearned monthly salaries being paid to persons who are deceased, retired, vacated their posts, flagged as missing staff, or whose whereabouts are unknown (colloquially referred to as “Ghost Names”) from their respective effective dates to January 2024, when it was blocked by the Special Prosecutor.

    “The blockade of the amount of Two Million Eight Hundred and Fifty-Four Thousand One Hundred and Forty-Four cedis Eighty pesewas (GHC2,854,144.80) and the removal from Government Payroll of the corresponding deceased, retired, post vacators, the missing, and those whose whereabouts are unknown has saved the Republic an amount of Thirty-Four
    Million Two Hundred and Forty-Nine Thousand Seven Hundred and ThirtySeven cedis Six pesewas (GHC34,249,737.6) for the 2024 financial year, and future savings of that amount (in addition to future periodic upward pay adjustments) for every year that the unearned-salaries-amount would have remained undetected but for the joint investigation and assessment by the OSP and CAGD of Government Payroll in the Northern Region (covering
    educational institutions under Ghana Education Service and Tamale Teaching Hospital).”

    According to a report on onuaonline.com, the assault on Agyemang was allegedly perpetrated by Eric Sampson, also known as Bullet, purportedly the bodyguard of Samuel Kwamena Mintah, the Member of Parliament for Cape Coast North.

    The chaos erupted at the registration center when individuals seeking to register were reportedly hindered, with suspicions that they were brought from other areas to the venue.

    This led to a confrontation between the MP’s team and members of the NPP.

    “Issues surrounding the maintenance of the transformers have been resolved. Indeed, we have witnessed stable power supply across the country with no load shedding reported anywhere yesterday…I am confident that the unfortunate era of dumsor will not return,” President Akufo-Addo said while delivering his speech at the Workers’ Day observation.

    His comments on dumsor come amidst public appeals for the government to either rectify the power irregularities or provide an electricity supply schedule.

    One notable advocate is Dr. Yaw Baah, the Secretary-General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), who urged the president to promptly tackle the intermittent power situation.

    Dr. Baah expressed his concerns, stating that it is unfortunate and unjust for Ghanaians to endure dumsor under the previous administration and again under the current one.

    According to him, the Ministry of Energy and the electricity suppliers, particularly ECG, are solely responsible for the plight of Ghanaians as a result of the power cuts.

    President Akufo-Addo has publicly acknowledged the recent challenges in power supply, reassuring the nation of the government’s firm commitment to resolving these issues.

    He expressed gratitude for the patience shown by Ghanaians during the recent power outages and reiterated ongoing efforts to address the challenges.

    Speaking at the inauguration of the Kumasi 1 Thermal Plant in the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, April 17, President Akufo-Addo acknowledged the difficulties faced not only by the people of Ashanti but also by citizens across the nation.

    Meanwhile, Chairman of Parliament’s Mines and Energy Committee, Samuel Atta Akyea, has cautioned against politicizing electricity issues and emphasized the universal need for reliable power supply regardless of political affiliations.

    “It is useless when propaganda is what people want to embark upon. I thought when it comes to electricity or power generation, I said and I will repeat it, it doesn’t have party colours. Everybody in Ghana needs electricity. And therefore when there is an undertaking to build on the power base of this nation and people want to pooh-pooh it, it doesn’t accord with common sense. What kind of government do you want to come and inherit? A government that will not have the use of electricity?

    “I don’t know our sense of governance. Our sense of governance is that Ghana should be the ultimate beneficiary. If it is NPP, fine. If it is NDC, that is what it should be. But when it is not coming from your government and you want to undermine it, it leaves much to be desired.”

    Flagbearer for the Nation Democratic Congress, John Dramani Mahama has made a commitment to prioritizing the completion of abandoned projects should he secure victory in the upcoming December polls.

    He has also vowed to address security concerns in the six recently established regions by establishing military barracks in each region if he wins the 2024 elections.

    The regions in question are Savannah, North East, Bono East, Ahafo, Western North, and Oti.

    During his speech in Gambaga, located in the North East Region, as part of his Building the Ghana We Want Tour, Mahama emphasized the pressing need for improved security in these new regions.

    He underscored the importance of taking proactive measures to ensure the safety and well-being of residents and outlined plans to bolster security infrastructure and respond swiftly to emerging threats by setting up military barracks in each region.

    “We are going to prioritise the completion of abandoned projects. All six new regions are going to have military barracks so that the Ghana Army will be present in all the regions. In addition, we are going to form joint military and police anti-armed robbery squads and one of those squads will be here in the North East to fight armed robbery.”

    “Because we want you to have peace and security to be able to go about your duties and we know that our 24-hour economy policy cannot work unless there is security and safety for everybody,” he explained.
