  • Authorities quicken 63rd independence Parade to save school children from heat

Authorities in the Kasena-Nankana West District of the Upper East Region have jumped portions of the program lineup for this year’s celebrations of Ghana’s 63rd independence to avert the effect of the sun’s intense heat on school children who have paraded at the Paga Town park to take part in the celebration.

As at 9 am Friday morning, the scorching sun was already high up in the sky, generating intense heat.

Temperatures in the Northern part the country are generally not friendly at this time of the year. Temperatures go beyond 43 degrees Celsius during these times.

To, therefore, prevent the recording of heat related calamities at the district level in this year’s celebrations, authorities pushed several portions of the program lineup, including the President’s speech, to the tail end of the event.

The Master of Ceremony (MC) announced the decision said: “We are now going to take the march pass. This is because it is getting late and the sun will soon start burning. Those of you who have the program lineup will realize that we have skipped some of the activities. The President’s speech will be read after the school children have finished marching and are under the shade”.

A total of 42 schools in the district, made up of 21 Primary Schools, 16 Junior High Schools and 5 Senior High Schools are participating in this year’s independence celebration.

The district security agencies including the police, fire service and ambulance services have been positioned to take control of foreseen challenges.

  • Independence Day: How Kumasi traders spent the night at stadium to secure best spots

Some rather daring traders have shown the real business risk-taking spirit of the Ashanti region bracing the cold night to sleep in the open just to secure the best spots for business during the 63rd independence day commemoration in the regional capital Kumasi.

The traders, some of whom had packed their merchandize in sacks, others covered with tarpaulins around the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, ostensibly kept an eagle eye.

Some who could not keep the night watch laid mats in the middle of what could best be described as their conquered territories to catch some sleep disregarded the noise from vehicles and passersby.

The merchandise included packs of bottled and sachet water, drinks, confectionaries, paraphernalia, clothes and artefacts with some keeping grilling stands and cooking accoutrements for their makeshift fast food joints.

The organizers who worked all night putting final touches to the 43 thousand-seater Baba Yara Sports stadium are optimistic huge numbers will show up to give the occasion, which is the first to happen in the Region, a befitting attendance.

The independence anniversary being celebrated on the theme: “Consolidating our Gains” will be attended by the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the president Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo, a good representation from Parliament, Ministers and Government Appointees, the diplomatic core as well as traditional authorities.

The Parade which will be heralded by the security services, school cadets, pupils drawn from basic, second and third cycle schools as well as other notable groups, will have the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Keith Rowley, as the Special Guest.
