You’ll never be selected if you don’t decide to die for Ghana – Kurt Okraku to Black Stars players

President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, has issued a strong warning to the Black Stars players, stressing that their lack of commitment in recent matches will not be tolerated.

Mr Okraku expressed his frustration following the team’s underwhelming performance in their opening games of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, which included a defeat to Angola and a 1-1 draw with Niger during the September international break.

With just one point from two games, Ghana currently sits third in Group F, prompting widespread criticism from fans and stakeholders alike. The team has since regrouped for a crucial doubleheader against Sudan, as they aim to get their AFCON campaign back on track.

During a visit to the Black Stars camp on Tuesday, October 8, Okraku delivered a passionate address, urging the players to show more commitment and avoid repeating the mistakes of their earlier games.

“The minimum I expect, the minimum Ghana expects, is a team of men who will show passion and desire to play for our country. Not when you are dribbled, and you’re seen walking on the pitch while the ball heads toward your net. That is impossible. I told the coach this,” Okraku stated.

He further warned the players, saying, “It’s either you guys decide to die for Ghana or decide you will not. If you don’t, you’ll never be selected.”

Okraku emphasized that wearing the national team jersey should instill pride and a determination to fight for victory, adding, “Once you depart your various places and come here and put on the shirt, naturally, that should give you the pride to fight, to show passion, to show aggression, and to show desire to win.”

The Black Stars will face Sudan on matchday three of the AFCON qualifiers at the Accra Sports Stadium on Thursday, October 10, before traveling to Libya for the return fixture on October 15.

“I used to lobby GFA to send Black Stars matches to Kumasi” – Asamoah Gyan

Legendary Ghanaian footballer Asamoah Gyan has revealed that he actively advocated for the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to host Black Stars matches in Kumasi.

Known as the ‘spiritual home’ of Ghanaian football, Kumasi holds a special place in Gyan’s heart due to his affinity for Asante Kotoko and the people of Asanteman.

In a lively discussion with his elder brother Baffour Gyan, Asamoah playfully acknowledged their ongoing banter over their love for Asante Kotoko.

Baffour Gyan, who fulfilled their shared dream by playing for Asante Kotoko in the 2011/2012 season, emphasized that playing for the club was the ultimate demonstration of love for Asanteman and the team.

Despite not having played for Asante Kotoko himself, Asamoah Gyan affirmed his deep affection for the club by actively pushing for international games to be hosted in Kumasi during his tenure as captain of the Black Stars.

I turned down an opportunity to coach Ghana because the timing was wrong – Asamoah Gyan

Former Blackstars Captain Asamoah Gyan, who retired from active football two years ago, has recently obtained a UEFA B coaching licence.

Despite being approached by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to coach a national team, he declined the offer.

Gyan explained in an interview that while he’s not opposed to coaching in the future, he believes the timing isn’t right at the moment.

He hinted at a potential coaching role down the line, stating, “I won’t entirely rule out the possibility to coach because we don’t know what the future holds.”

Asamoah Gyan is a Ghanaian former professional footballer who played as a striker.

  • Anas’ team was paid to bring me down because I was too powerful – Kwesi Nyantakyi alleges

Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kwesi Nyantakyi has made startling allegations, accusing investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas of being paid by influential figures within the country to dismantle his reputation.

Nyantakyi, who spoke during an interview on Onua TV, asserted that the motive behind Anas’ actions was to tarnish his image.

He claimed that the notorious ‘Number 12’ documentary, released by Anas in June 2018, was orchestrated to bring him down.

“ Anas Aremeyaw Anas was paid by some powerful people to destroy me, they wanted to destroy me but they only ended up destroying my good name,” Kwesi Nyantakyi stated.

According to Nyantakyi, he even attempted to prevent the release of the damaging video by offering $100,000 to Anas through his lawyers.

However, despite this alleged payment, Anas’ legal team deemed the amount insufficient, leading to the eventual release of the exposé.

The fallout from the ‘Number 12’ investigation was significant, leading to Nyantakyi’s resignation from his roles at the GFA, CAF, and FIFA, as well as a subsequent 15-year ban from football.

Nyantakyi further disclosed that he later sought a refund for the money he had paid, receiving it in instalments after persistent requests.

The revelations made by Nyantakyi have reignited discussions about corruption in sports and governance in Ghana, prompting calls for further scrutiny into the allegations he has raised against Anas Aremeyaw Anas.

GFA officials don’t even support ‘poor’ Ghanaian teams – Kwesi Pratt alleges

In the aftermath of the Black Stars’ disappointing exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), seasoned commentator and political analyst, Kwesi Pratt, has raised eyebrows about the commitment of Ghana Football Association (GFA) officials to national teams.

The Ghanaian national football team’s underwhelming performance in the AFCON tournament has sparked criticism and introspection.

Kwesi Pratt, known for his candid opinions, expressed his skepticism during a recent interview, suggesting that some GFA officials may not genuinely support teams representing Ghana.

The AFCON exit has prompted calls for a comprehensive review of the country’s football structure, from grassroots development to national team management.

Kwesi Pratt also raised a pertinent question about the allegiance of Ghana Football Association (GFA) officials, asserting that their preference for international teams like Chelsea may be indicative of a broader issue affecting the nation’s football landscape.

Mr Pratt expressed his conviction that if GFA officials were asked about their favorite teams, they would likely mention renowned international clubs rather than local teams.

“Our focus is on foreign football, and this raises concerns about how we can excel in nurturing and promoting our national teams,” he remarked.

The veteran commentator emphasized the need for a more localized approach in the development and support of Ghanaian football. Pratt voiced his concerns over the composition of the Black Stars team, urging for a reflection of Ghana’s identity in the coaching staff, players, and overall team culture.

“GFA officials I am sure when you ask them which team they support they will mention international teams like Chelsea and the likes. Our focus is on foreign football, how can we excel in our team. The BlackStars team should reflect in the coaches, the players etc. They are some players who don’t eat Ghanaian foods or even speak Ghanaian language. How can such individuals play Ghana National team. All the AFCON cups Ghanaians has secured was as a result of the Ghanaian coaches we had,” he added.

He expressed dismay over certain players who may not be connected to their Ghanaian roots, citing instances where some do not consume Ghanaian foods or speak the local language.

“How can such individuals truly represent the Ghana National team?” Mr Pratt questioned, emphasizing the importance of cultural and national identity in the context of international sports representation.

Drawing a historical perspective, Pratt underscored the contribution of Ghanaian coaches in securing past Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) victories.

“All the AFCON cups Ghanaians have secured were as a result of the Ghanaian coaches we had,” he asserted, highlighting the success achieved under local coaching expertise.

In the meantime, fans and analysts have urged the GFA to address systemic issues, implement reforms, and prioritize the nurturing of talent to restore Ghana’s football glory.

  • Black Stars coach search committee is useless, it must be disbanded immediately – Ablakwa to GFA

Black Stars coach search committee is useless, it must be disbanded immediately – Ablakwa to GFA

The Member of Parliament (MP) for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has called for the immediate dissolution of the search committee established by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to recruit a new coach for the Black Stars.

Emphasizing the necessity for a comprehensive revamp of the country’s sporting framework, he advocates for the formulation of a national sports policy to regulate sporting and related activities in Ghana.

Mr. Ablakwa recently alleged that the Ministry of Youth and Sports budgeted an estimated $8.5 million for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) without obtaining parliamentary approval.

Addressing journalists in Kumasi, the North Tongu legislator urged the GFA to suspend the committee responsible for finding a new coach, highlighting the absence of a national sports policy and the need for strategic planning in Ghana’s football development.

He proposed a suspension of international sporting competitions to address fundamental issues, stating, “There’s the need for us as a country to overhaul sporting departments of our country. I’m appalled that Ghana doesn’t have a national sports policy. You keep hiring coaches, what is the vision for our sports football in particular? What is the plan for our infrastructure? Ghana doesn’t have a FIFA-certified pitch, what are the managers of football doing? Suspend all these international sporting competitions that we have been disgracing ourselves, and let’s get to the basics.

That committee [coach search committee] that they have set up should be disbanded, we don’t need to be rushing for coaches, how many coaches are we going to have within a few months.”

Ablakwa hinted at leading a bipartisan parliamentary probe into the budget for the AFCON 2023 tournament, asserting that spending public funds without parliamentary approval is unconstitutional and illegal.

“It’s important to emphasize that what has gone on so far is clearly unconstitutionality and illegality. Before you spend public funds, you need parliamentary approval. As an MP, at no time, did the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the GFA present the Black Stars budget to parliament. They had the effrontery, the audacity to tell us that they are going to spend public funds when they return, then they are now going to make an account and tell us what the budget is.

He pledged to present a motion to Speaker Alban Bagbin, calling for a comprehensive bipartisan parliamentary inquiry into the matter.

Ghana’s performance in AFCON 2023, where they exited without a win, prompted the GFA to take responsibility for the sub-par campaign. In a statement, the GFA acknowledged falling short of expectations and pledged to address the issues leading to the team’s underwhelming performance.

George Afriyie challenges disqualification in GFA elections

George Afriyie, the former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), is poised to pursue his case as a final recourse by seeking resolution through the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and the National Independent Tribunal.

This decision follows the recent ruling by the Appeals Committee, which affirmed the GFA Elections Committee’s decision to disqualify George Afriyie from participating in the GFA Presidential elections.

In an exclusive interview with the media, George Afriyie’s legal representative, Esq. Richmond Saaka, disclosed that his client is fully committed to exploring all available avenues to address this matter.

“I have instructions from the client [George Afriyie], the instructions are based on the advice he has been given and the advice is informed by the very same GFA statutes and regulations.

“The statutes and regulations say that you can file an appeal if you are not happy with a certain decision and then you can head to the Court of Arbitration for Sports or the National Independent Arbitration Tribunal to deal with (an) appeal that arises.

“So we believe that, per the rules of the GFA, these are available options, we will head to the Court of Arbitration for Sports or engage the National Independent Arbitration Tribunal to help us appeal the decision of the Appeals Committee of the Ghana Football Association because that is what the statutes of the FA provide.”

The original election date, initially scheduled for September 27, faces increased uncertainty due to a court injunction filed by King Faisal. Consequently, the hearing has been adjourned for the third time, with the new date set for September 28, 2023.

  • Interfering in the work of coaches is wrong – Nyantakyi

Former President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kwasi Nyantakyi, has voiced his opposition to the practice of imposing players on national team coaches.

Speaking to the media, the former FIFA council member emphasized the importance of respecting the professional judgment of coaches.

“It is very important for us to know that coaches are professionals just like any other professional you may engage to work for you, a surveyor, an architect, a teacher, an engineer or even a doctor,” he said in an interview with GTV.

“And when you employ any of them you do not tell the person how to do the work because once the person is certificated to do the work, it is presumed that he has deep knowledge and experience in the work and can perform satisfactorily to achieve the set objectives.

He added that “it is unprofessional for anyone to tell a coach to recruit a player and field him in a game, however, there is nothing wrong for anybody to suggest that a certain player is good and that the coach should look at him but it is wrong for a management committee to allocate to themselves players per member in the team.

“The final decision should always rest with the coach and anything that compromises his independence and decision-making is interference and must be resisted,” started.

Remove your mask! – Court directs Anas

An Accra High Court has directed investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas to appear before the chamber without a mask in his criminal charges against former President of the Ghana Football Association, Kwesi Nyantakyi.

Anas, who has been extremely reluctant to appear in court without his mask, will now have to remove his mask before he can testify in Chambers.

This comes after the Supreme Court quashed an earlier ruling by a lower court giving permission for Anas to testify in camera.

The journalist, whose investigation led to Nyantakyi resigning from several football posts, claimed his life would be in danger if he testifies in court.

The order of the High Court 2, Criminal Division granted permission to Anas Aremeyaw Anas to testify on camera in the case against Kwesi Nyantakyi.

In June 2018, the former member of Fifa’s executive council was filmed taking $65,000 in cash from an undercover reporter in a film captured by journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas which was aired by BBC Africa’s investigations unit, Africa Eye.

Nyantakyi was pictured placing the “shopping money” into a black plastic bag from an undercover reporter pretending to be a businessman keen to invest in Ghanaian football.

He later agreed to what he believed to be a sponsorship deal for the Ghana FA, which he had presided over since 2005. The bogus deal, invented by the reporters, would have enabled millions of dollars in commission to be paid to a company controlled by him.

This cost him his positions as FIFA Council Member and 1st Vice President of CAF.

Kwesi Nyantakyi, the former president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), reacted to the dismissal of Anas Aremeyaw Anas‘ defamation lawsuit against Kennedy Agyapong.

In 2018, Anas filed a GH¢25 million defamation lawsuit against Kennedy Agyapong, the Member of Parliament for Assin Central in the Central Region, but the court ruled on March 15 that the claim is without merit.

In a lengthy ruling, Justice Eric Baah held that the plaintiff [Anas Aremeyaw Anas] failed to prove that Kennedy Agyapong defamed the investigative journalist by airing the documentary – “Who watches the watchman.”

Speaking on Accra-based Oman FM earlier today, Mr. Nyantakyi said “the High Court’s decision testifies to the truth that Anas Aremeyaw Anas is not honest but as described by the court, he is a blackmailer and an extortionist.”

“The judge also described his job as an investigative terrorist instead of an investigative journalist. He has been totally disgraced. He once portrayed himself as an angel, but today I’m not even sure he is at the devil’s level yet.”

Being apart of the Black Stars team does not make you more superior – Henri Asante Twum

Henry Asante Twum, the Ghana Football Association‘s [GFA] communications director, has urged players who make the Black Stars roster to show their mettle on the pitch.

For the two games against Angola in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers later this month, Black Stars head coach Chris Hughton has kept the majority of the team that competed for the Black Stars during the 2022 World Cup.

Majeed Ashimeru, Jojo Wallacott, and Joseph Paintsil are all back on the team for the games.

Asante Twum says many more players equally deserved a place on the list but may not have made it due to the limited number required.

“They [Black Stars players] know that anything they do on the field of play, Ghanaians are watching because they are ambassadors,” he told Kumasi-based Akoma FM.

“When you are selected among the final 26 or 25 players for a competition, it does not make you exceptionally talented over others but because it’s on merit.

“There are other players who ordinarily would have had the opportunity but missed out due to limited places.

“So, when allowed to wear the colours of Ghana, you must wholeheartedly play and sacrifice for the nation, and by so doing, the country will honour you,” he added.

Ghana will clash with the Palancas Negras on Thursday, March 23 at the Baba Yara Stadium before travelling to Luanda for the reverse fixture four days later.

The Black Stars are tied on points with Angola with four apiece while Madagascar and Central African Republic have a point each in Group E.

No GFA employee ever forces players on a Black Stars coach – Prosper Harrison Addo

Prosper Harrison Addo, general secretary of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has remarked that it is absurd to claim that Black Stars player selections are made by president Kurt Okraku.

He claims there is no basis for the accusation.

Prosper Harrison Addo remarked, “It’s funny to suggest Kurt Okraku determines the decision for the Black Stars,” during a conversation on Citi FM on March 10 on Friday.

The Ghana FA General Secretary continued to explain, “These are all kinds of accusations without facts. There is a process. No one person, the head coach alone does not make the squad. He discusses it with his team and they present it to the management committee. If it is good then it will come out.

“Nobody imposes a player on a coach.”

He further advised that if anyone does not like a certain player they should not expect that a coach will not invite that player.

Atsu’s family to meet Akufo-Addo today concerning burial arrangement

Today, Monday, February 27, 2023, President Akufo-Addo is scheduled to meet with the family of late Christian Atsu as well as representatives of the Ghana Football Association, and Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif to discuss the final burial arrangement for the deceased.

Following the 7.8 magnitude catastrophe, Christian Atsu was discovered dead under the debris at his residence in the Turkish province of Hatay.

His body was subsequently brought to Ghana with government representatives, members of the football community, colleagues, supporters, and Ghanaians, in general offering their condolences to the bereaved family.

On March 4, 2023, the deceased footballer will be remembered with a one-week memorial observation at Adjiringanor in Accra.

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Yussif told the media that: “We will call on the President on Monday. Once we do that, the plan that the family has tabled before the Ministry and GFA would be made public because it is subject to the confirmation of the president.  A funeral planning committee has also been set up to ensure a befitting funeral.”

The government has vowed to fully engage with the family in giving Atsu a proper burial.

Last Friday, discussions were completed between the Atsu family, Ghana Football Association representatives, and Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif ahead of the late footballer’s final funeral rites.

Meanwhile, the family says it is incredibly grateful for the affection and support shown to them in the wake of the tragic passing of their relative in the devastating earthquake in Turkey.

The Twasams are especially appreciative of the assistance received from the government, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and Ghanaians during this difficult time.

Robert Ani, a family spokesman, told Citi News that the family’s gratitude for Christian Atsu’s demise cannot be adequately expressed in words.

“The support of government and Ghanaians has been overwhelming. First, I want to thank President Akufo-Addo for taking a keen interest right from when the incident occurred. The President has been very helpful. We just want to say thank you to him and Ghanaians also. The support has been overwhelming. People have been calling, visiting and offering the support they can. So far, I will say that it has been overwhelming”, he said.

Three-term limit for GFA presidents extremely unnecessary – Fred Pappoe

The suggestion to increase the term limit for GFA presidents from two terms to three or four years has been rebuffed by former vice president of the Ghana Football Association, Fred Pappoe.

The GFA’s existing regulations only allow presidents to serve two terms of four years each, but according to Oluboi Commodore, general manager of Accra Great Olympics, a new proposal has been put up that, if passed by Congress, would allow a GFA president to serve for a total of 12 years.

Fred Pappoe called the plan unnecessary and advised those in the position to focus on carrying out their duties rather than seeking an extension of their term.

“I don’t even want to talk about that third-term proposal. It is needless. I do not see the need for three terms. If the electorates exercise their voting powers rightfully, they shouldn’t be scared about any term limit.”

“It is not mandatory. I have a very funny of thinking about issues. The term limit doesn’t really matter to me. If the delegates believe in the system it doesn’t matter whether it is one term or two terms.”

“Regardless of the term limit, if you don’t perform you can be voted out. The issue here is people exercising their voting powers rightfully,” Fred Pappoe said on Accra-based Asempa FM.

Fred Pappoe contested in the 2019 Ghana Football Association presidential elections but conceded defeat to Kurt Okraku before the third run.

Chris Hughton was always the best candidate to lead the Black Stars – Augustine Ahinful

Chris Hughton, a former Ghanaian forward, was always the ideal candidate to lead the Black Stars due to his extensive coaching background, according to Augustine Ahinful.

After serving as a technical advisor for the previous 12 months, the Ghana Football Association confirmed the former Brighton manager as the new head coach of the national team.

Hughton, 48, claims that his Premier League background and time with the Black Stars have prepared him for the demands of playing for the Black Stars.

“If we needed to appoint somebody to lead the national team, it was him,” he told Citi Sports.

“He has been with the team for some time and I’m sure as a former footballer who has now become a coach, coached at the highest level in the Premiership, he will be able to handle the team.

“If there are any impediments in his way, he will know by now. It is high time we allow him to do his own thing because his job is based on technical abilities of the game. The administrative staff should also concentrate on administrative issues.

“It is not out of place to give the job to him, for me.”

According to Augustine Ahinful, Chris Hughton is already aware of any potential obstacles he may face in his role as Black Stars head coach.

He thinks his one year on the team as a technical advisor was sufficient time to become familiar with the squad.

Ahinful also pleaded with the Ghana Football Association to allow Hughton full authority to lead the Black Stars.

He told Citi Sports, “If we needed to name someone to captain the national team, it was him.”

Black Stars’ core group of players will remain intact – Assistant coach

Mas-Ud Didi Dramani has guaranteed that the nucleus of the playing roster will remain with the newly created Black Stars technical team.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA), which had been tense for weeks, ultimately announced Chris Hughton as Otto Addo’s replacement while keeping George Boateng and Dramani on as assistant coaches.

Didi, together with Boateng and Hughton, was a member of the technical group that guided Ghana to victory in Qatar over Nigeria.

“The [World Cup] squad is still alive. You have to look at how the leagues are going now as well as those [players] who are on the pitch. Talking about those to maintain, if the person is injured he is out [for the qualifiers],” he told Joy Prime in an interview.

“The core of the team is still the base,” he added.

Hughton served as the technical advisor of the Black Stars from February to December 2022, alongside coach Otto Addo and his assistants, Boateng and Dramani, from the World Cup playoff against Nigeria to the tournament proper.

Daniel-Kofi Kyereh, Elisha Owusu and Alidu Seidu are expected to be out of the squad after suffering respective injuries.

The Black Stars, who are top of Group E for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers with four points based on goal difference, will host Angola, who also have four points, on Monday, March 20, 2023.

King Faisal, a struggling Ghana Premier League team, has been given permission by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to transfer their home stadium from the Baba Yara Stadium to the Kwame Kyei Sports Complex at Abrankese for the remainder of the season.

The team requested permission to change venues for the second round of the season from the Ghana Football Association (GFA), and it has already been granted.

“The Ghana Football Association has confirmed that we will play our home matches at the Dr. Kwame Kyei Sports Complex for the second round of the 2022/23 League season. This is a result of our request to change our venue.”the club announced.

Matches generally in the betPawa Premier League have attracted very low patronage with most football fans sadly not enthused by the local game.

King Faisal have been no different with very low attendance during their games at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium coupled with the high cost of playing matches at the venue.

Lower-tier side Nations FC which is owned by Kotoko board chairman, Dr. Kwame Kyei have been using the Abrankese Stadium which he has reportedly acquired from Mr. Kwabena Kesse aka Kessben.

The facility since it was acquired by the business mogul has seen a major facelift with plush dressing rooms among others.

King Faisal will adopt the Kwame Kyei Sports Stadium as their new home for the second round of the league.

They have in the past used the Techiman Golden City Park as their home venue.

Black Stars should have its flaws fixed – Odartey Lamptey

The Ghana Football Association has elevated Chris Hughton, the Black Stars’ technical adviser under Otto Addo, to senior coach.

Nii Odartey Lamptey said Chris Hughton had been with the Black Stars for a few months and had heard all the “misconceptions” about the group in his remarks regarding the appointment.

Chris Hughton was part of the Black Stars technical team at the World Cup in Qatar so I am tempted to believe with what the media reports, he might have read all and heard it.”

“If Chris Hughton wants to change our system, this is the right time for him to do it. Having served as the technical advisor, he might have seen so many things. Now he has been awarded the head coach role so I am expecting him to correct those wrongs,” he said in an interview with Accra-based Asempa FM.

Nii Odartey Lamptey believes that it will be difficult for anyone in the hierarchy of the Ghana Football Association to force his wishes on Chris Hughton.

“With his experience and pedigree, I think it will be difficult for someone to influence the job of Chris Hughton.”

  • Opeele pushes Randy Abbey into an online dispute with Sam George

Opeele pushes Randy Abbey into an online dispute with Sam George

Isaac Opeele Boateng, a former assistant coach for Ghana’s Under-17 team, has challenged Sam Nartey George, Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram, to utilise Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV to further his campaign against the Ghana Football Association.

Opeele is challenging Sam George to make those allegations about the FA on the show Dr. Randy Abbey hosts, who is a member of the GFA Executive Council.

Sam George might not be able to make those assertions on the show, according to the former Asante Kotoko coach, because doing so would be disrespectful to Dr. Randy Abbey, a close friend of Sam George’s.

“ The MP sitting on tv3 to spew coefficient by the GFA is not enough. When he goes to his friend Randy Abbey show on Metro TV he should spew it in Randy face that Randy took coefficient to get us Coach Milo and had coefficient at the World Cup then we know he is a bold honorable,” he tweeted.

Opeele has been sparring with Sam George as the two men hold dissenting views on the state of Ghana football under Kurt Okraku.

Coach Opeele was the one who first went after Sam George after the MP made allegations against the Ghana Football Association.

In response to Sam George’s claims that the officials of the FA interfere in national team call-ups, Coach Opeele sought to belittle the MP with the claim that he is a novice in football.

“I monitored hue & cry by devil advocates in Gh that, GFA should sue an MP. Basically, The novice MP has no voice in soccer. How many fans know him? It is same way a sports person passing bad political comment would be overlooked cos the person has no voice in politics,” he tweeted.

    What did Sam George say

Sam George in a Joy Prime interview made some wild allegations against the Ghana Football Association and its president.

Sam George said that the FA have settled on Chris Hughton as the next Black Stars coach because he can be manipulated.

“That [coaching] job they have given it to Chris Hughton already, so why are we wasting our time?” he quizzed on Joy Prime.

“They have given it to him because they want someone they can manipulate, someone they can use to do their business, someone they can tell him to bring his team selection [with changes being made with regards to agency call-ups] regardless of how long the person has played or not played.

“People are using GFA to make money; they are using it to feed their family.”

When asked whether he had proof of his comments, he said, “Tell me how Baba Rahman found his way to the last squad at the final game at the World Cup [v Uruguay]. What ball did he play? What ball had he played? Is Baba Rahman’s agent not our GFA president?”

Experienced football administrator, George Afriyie has given an indication that he will contest Kurt Okraku for the Ghana Football Association (GFA) presidential seat once his tenure expires.

According to the former Ghana FA vice president, he will assess the performance of Kurt Okraku when his mandate expires in October later this year before finally deciding whether he will contest for the top job or not.

“What I know is that Kurt Okraku’s first mandate will end on 25th October 2023 and definitely there will be an assessment to see if he’s done well or not.

“After the expiration of his first tenure, the assessment will determine if some of us will contest him or support him,” George Afriyie told Original FM in an interview on the Super Sports Show.

In the interview, George Afriyie opened up on reservations about the GFA’s sponsorship agreement with betPawa, particularly citing concern about the $1 million allocation made for promotion.

“If a sponsorship is signed and $1m is been used for marketing and promotion by the same brand that needs promotion, we will determine if he’s done well or not to deserve another term,” he said.

George Afriyie contested Kurt Okraku in the last election but lost. He is considering his option and will hope that if contests in the next election he will win.

The quality in Ghana Premier League is poor – Dr Nyaho Tamakloe

Board Member of Hearts of Oak, Dr Nyaho Nyaho Tamakloe has questioned the level of quality in the Ghana Premier League.

This comes after the country’s shocking elimination at the ongoing 2022 African Nations Championship [CHAN] in Algeria.

Ghana suffered a 2-0 defeat against Niger in the quarterfinal game on Saturday evening.

The Black Galaxies opened their campaign with an astonishing defeat against Madagascar before fighting back to beat Sudan 3-1 in their second Group C game.

The Galaxies were however awarded three points after Morocco pulled out of the tournament.

Following the team’s elimination, the former Ghana Football Association [GFA] chairman has questioned the quality in the topflight.

“The level of quality in the Ghana Premier League is very poor and it is real problem,” Dr Tamakloe said on Asempa FM.

The Black Galaxies are expected to arrive in the country later today. The team has been awarded a $400,000 for finishing at the quarterfinal.

Black Stars: Don’t appoint a coach who has ties with player management agencies – J. E Sarpong

Seasoned coach Emmanuel Josef (J.E) Sarpong has urged the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to make sure the next coach of the national team, the Black Stars, has no personal connections to or interests in any of the players.

Coach Sarpong highlighted that in order to prevent conflicts of interest in player selection for national duties, the possible Black Stars coach should not be associated with any player management firm.

“Such a coach must also have some years of relevant experience of at least 10 years coaching at the top level, must demonstrate a high level of integrity, must be fair and firm in player selection to constitute his team for any national assignment, and must be a team player,” said Coach Sarpong.

He added that the coach should be able to work in challenging conditions in Ghana and other African countries, have a basic command of the English language, and be able to effectively communicate with all parties, including the players and the media.

Coach Sarpong added that the salary of the new coach should fit within the GFA‘s budget to ensure regular payment and boost morale.

When discussing player selection for the Black Stars, Coach Sarpong stated that priority should be given to players who regularly perform well in their clubs in Ghana and abroad.

“Selection should be purely on competitive merit. It is only the best among those available in terms of the level of activity, quality of the league and opposition the player competes in, as well as his level of discipline, readiness and willingness to play for the Black Stars and self-motivation devoid of battling for appearance fee’.

“Selection should also be based on the ability to play and excel in difficult environments, as well as experience and excellence in previous playing times in our national team,” he added.

The GFA is set to appoint Otto Addo’s replacement by the first week of February.

Kwesi Appiah should not have applied for Black Stars job – Abbey Pobi

Veteran football administrator, Jonathan Abbey Pobi has questioned Kwesi Appiah‘s decision to apply for the vacant Black Stars job.

Appiah has confirmed that he has applied for the job having had two stints with the team.

The 62-year-old led the team to the 2014 World Cup and the 2019 African Cup of Nations [AFCON] in Egypt.

However, the Ghana Football Association [GFA] parted ways with Kwesi Appiah following the expiration of his contract.

According to Abbey Pobi, the factors that hindered the 62-year-old’s stints in charge of the senior national team still exist.

“Kwesi Appiah shouldn’t have applied,” he told Citi Sports. “Because, in his own book that he has written, and he has mentioned some names.

“Those people who were not giving him chance to do his work. These people where are they? Are they not in existence?

“So, why is Kwesi Appiah coming back?” he added.

Meanwhile, the country’s football governing body are expected to name a new trainer this month before the Black Stars playing body regroup for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations [AFCON] qualifiers in March.

Responding to the aforementioned claims, Prosper Harrison Addo said, “Anyone who says that should know, that statement is very insulting. It is insulting to whoever coach they are talking about. The coaches are also fathers and so, if you cannot insult your father then you also don’t have to insult someone’s father”

“If you say that we are manipulating a coach, it means that coach has no sense which is insulting. A lot of the people who are talking don’t know the kind people they are talking about. If they really know the people they are talking about, they wouldn’t have made that statement that we manipulated Otto Addo, Chris Hughton, CK, Milo or any other”

“It is very unfair when those statements are made. Sometimes, people feel that when you insult the FA you don’t insult anybody but we have people who work here, I am the General Secretary so the moment you say the FA is corrupt, you are insulting me but I have not stolen from anyone and once you cannot stand in front of me and insult me, don’t go general like that. You can make your point; we will listen”

Ghana is currently without a substantive coach following the resignation of Otto Addo after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

GFA urged to ban sports betting in Ghana Premier League to combat match-fixing

The President of Bechem United, Kingsley Owusu Achau, has implored the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to implement a ban on sports betting within the Ghana Premier League.

Owusu Achau posits that such a measure would serve to eradicate the issue of match-fixing, which has been a persistent problem for the league in recent years.

In the 2020/21 season, there were red flags raised during a high-scoring match between Ashanti Gold and Inter Allies in the Ghana Premier League.

Both teams were subsequently found guilty of match manipulation by the GFA’s Disciplinary Committee, and as a result, were demoted to the Division Two League.

Owusu Achau has urged the GFA to follow in the footsteps of Sudan and prohibit betting companies from including matches from the Ghanaian topflight on their sites.

“We have not been able to stamp it out so I made a proposal to the effect that even the FA could ban it so that no one can use our product as it is done in Sudan and some other places where you cannot use their league for betting,” he told the Graphic Sport.

“It is our product so we have the right to say that if you are caught using our product for betting you’ll be sued for several millions of dollars. This is not the first of its kind, it is done in Sudan and some other countries.”

Meanwhile, Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association [GFA], Henry Asante Twum speaking in an interview hinted that over 60 coaches have applied for the vacant job.

The English-born Ghanaian broke Alan Shearer and Francis Jeffers’ long-standing record of 13 goals after scoring against Turkey in 2020. He went on to set a new record with 16 goals in 17 games for the young Three Lions.

Nketiah’s international future has been heavily debated in the media as the Ghana Football Association try to persuade him to switch allegiance.

Referee Yao Bless has been punished – GFA spokesman Henry Asante Twum

Ghana Football Association‘s spokesman, Henry Asante Twum has stated that referee Selorm Yao Bless has been punished by the FA but they have decided not to publish sanctions against referees.

Mr. Twum explained that the Ghana FA took the decision in order to protect the general image of Ghanaian referees.

Reigning Ghana Premier League champions Asante Kotoko petitioned the Ghana Football Association over some controversial decisions made by Yao Bless.

Fans of the Porcupine Warriors have complained about not hearing anything from the FA about their club’s petition. Henry Asante Twum reacting to their concerns revealed the referee was punished.

“He was punished we didn’t publish we just didn’t want to make it public. For this season we have punished referees we put them on ice we don’t make it public. That is the decision the secretariat has taken. You can see that Yao Bless for a long time he wasn’t officiating,” he told Asempa FM as monitored by Footballghana.com

“There is a global effect as well so you think about the collective good about the product than just to appease the public. In the past when we punish a referee then we publish it you can sit and ask yourself how this affects the image of our referees globally or at the international front,”

“At FIFA they punish referee they put them on ice they don’t talk about the referee again. Same CAF unless there is a grievous error that is so huge and bad then they must come out and explain saying they are investigating. But if it is a minor error then you report it then they do look into it and see that the referee is wrong they just put the referee on ice without making any public statement. We also feel that should be the new way that is the decision the secretariat has taken,”
