  • C.K Akonnor is not fit for Black Stars coaching job Ntow Gyan

Former Ghana international Ntow Gyan has questioned the capabilities of newly appointed head coach of the Black Stars, Charles Kwablan Akonnor, claiming that he cannot do the job.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) on last week Tuesday appointed C.K Akonnor as head coach of the Black Stars.

C.K Akonnor appointed Black Stars coach: Is he the right man?

However, Ntow Gyan believes there are many experienced coaches in the local scene than the former Wolfsburg captain.

“To be frank, CK Akonnor will not help us because it is not the time for him to handle the Black Stars. Even if he sit down and access himself he will understand what am saying” he told Bryt FM.

“The best position for CK is the assistant coaching role. Being an assistant coach for some time will help him to get experience to be well equipped for the head coach proper” he added.

According to him, the newly appointed head coach of the Black Stars has not been in the local scene for long and for that matter, will lack experience going forward.

The former Kotoko midfielder believes CK should have started from somewhere before given the job.

  • ‘Corrupt officials will be exposed under my tenure’ – Ankomah

Lawyer George Ankomah Mensah a Director of Accra based division three side Odorkor Kwashieman (OK) United has said corrupt officials will be dealt with under his tenure when voted into office as the next president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

Lawyer Ankomah, who together with six other presidential aspirants would need to pass through vetting before elections said the image of Ghana football had been dented, thereby driving away sponsorships.

Read:GFA Elections: George Afriyie proposes $1000 minimum wage to Premier League players

“Football creates a legacy and an iconic position, which when sanctified, sponsors would come knocking on the GFA doors rather than GFA going to them.

“The lack of transparency has driven a lot of goodies away from our football and its time we take a critical look at that, reason I have made it a point to expose any corrupt practices and officials to be apprehended.

Read:See the 7 persons who want to replace Nyantakyi as GFA Prez

“Football is a whole business on its own and it thrives on brand but ours has been vilified and it is time to redeem that and I am the right person for that job” he added.

He said he would not be compromised in any way to be derailed from his vision and mission as he has availed himself for the vacant GFA presidential presidential position.

Lawyer Ankomah, said he would be launching his manifesto in the coming weeks, with focus on grassroots development and transparency.

    Source: ghananewsagency.org

  • Who qualifies as Nyantakyi’s successor?

Interestingly, the elections roadmap which was released by the Normalisation Committee (NC) of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) last Saturday confirmed my fears as it indicated clearly that the presidential election will crown the entire electoral exercise this time around.

Per the guidelines, the new GFA President will be elected at an Extraordinary Congress on October 25 to climax the reforms. On that same day, the NC will swear in the new 12-member Executive Council (ExCo) and officially hand over its interim stewardship which was mandated by FIFA on September 13, 2018.

A careful study of the roadmap makes one thing very clear; that the elections of the various constituent bodies of the GFA will precede the presidential election, thus supporting my argument in last week’s article. That simply means some presidential aspirants might lose both the presidential seat and a chance to serve on the ExCo if they don’t play their cards well. But that is of concern to me since some of the candidates have some qualities that can help make the new ExCo tick, without necessarily occupying the big seat.

‘You can’t eat your cake and have it’, so say the sages. In that case, I expect all the aspirants to tread with cautious optimism from now till the elections. This is where I expect the power brokers and kingmakers in Ghana Football to step in.

Read:The dynamics of the GFA Presidential Elections

Between now and the elections of the constituent bodies, comprising Premier League (5 slots), Division One (3), Elite Women’s League (1) and Regional Football Associations (2), on October 24, a lot of consensus-building needs to take place among the presidential aspirants in the supreme interest of Ghana Football. Fortunately or unfortunately, we have reached a very critical stage where parochial interests have to be sacrificed for the general good of the game. And if any of the presidential candidates has Ghana Football at heart, I dont think it will be difficult to soften their stance to seek a Premier League or Division One League slot to serve on the ExCo.

To be blunt, not all the candidates who have so far declared their intention to contest, such as George Afriyie, Wilfred Osei Kweku (Palmer), Nana Yaw Amponsah, Fred Pappoe and Kurt Okraku truly qualify to become the next GFA president. I said last week that if the last GFA president, Kwesi Nyantakyi, with all his weaknesses, rose to become a CAF Vice President and a FIFA Executive Committee member, then his successor should be better than him. A high standard has been set, and the bar simply can’t be lowered.

Many a sincere member of the football fraternity will tell you that the Ghana Football brand is now in tatters. That is why we cannot entertain any jokes at this crucial stage where getting somebody who can help rebrand Ghana Football is not negotiable! We need a personality who can repair the damage and also attract the corporate world to invest in the game.

Read:How to become the next GFA President

My interaction with some top officials in the corporate world indicate that they are still interested in investing in Ghana Football, but the problem is who to trust with their money. That should be topmost agenda for football people as they head towards this historic elections. This elections should not be about friends and cronies at all! Neither should it be about money-sharing or voting for the highest bidder as I stated last week.

I don’t have a vote, but as a key stakeholder of the game and a witness of the last reforms in 2005, I have quite an experience to share when it comes to such issues. Perhaps, if the chairman of the GFA Executive Council at the time, Y.A. Ibrahim (who was the father figure then), had been elected as the president or even served on the first ExCo, things might have been different.

The good news is that, aside the self-appraisal and consensus-building, there will also be a vetting process for the presidential candidates between September 26 and October 1. And to give a level playing field for all, the NC has made room for appeal for any disqualified candidate from October 2 to 4, after which the final list will be published on October 8.

Read:Next GFA president must be of highest integrity, unifier Coach Sarpong

But the point is, the presidential election should not be reckoned as a life and death affair for any of the candidates and their supporters. Elections are all about ideas and quality one brings to the table. If you believe in yourself and think life still goes in case you lose, you will not try to influence anybody with money to vote for you.

That reminds me of the advise given by the Board chairman of Hearts of Oak at the last SWAG Awards. The astute businessman and majority shareholder of Hearts cautioned delegates not to vote for any candidate who bribes them with money. His reason was simple: that those candidates who operate that way will find every means to get the money they invested in the campaign back when elected into office. That is food for thought from a wise king and an acclaimed businessmen.

A few weeks ago, I stressed on the need for the congressmen to vote for a unifier and a father figure who can be respected by all members of the football family and the whole nation. I still maintain that stand because that is what is lacking in Ghana Football at this point in time.

I pray such a character emerges by the close of nominations on Friday. If that happens, I will come out boldly to declare my preferred choice next week. That is a pledge!

In the year 2017, a highly spirited, littered, knowledgeable and effervescent young man burst into the footballing circles and declares his intention to contest GFA Presidential polls in 2019 by releasing a solid manifesto captioned “Empowering the Football People and Decoding the Football People Tag” which details his vision for Ghana Football.

The President of Phar Rangers Football Club, Nana Yaw Amponsah who holds a Master’s Degree (LLM) in Sports Law and Practice from the Leicester De Montfort University in the United Kingdom, is the only presidential aspirant till date to have brought his working document which is a living organism capable of growth.

The highlight of his manifesto which hinges on 3 thematic points namely :Restoring the integrity of the game; development of grassroots football and commercialisation of our local league includes policies such as Transfer Fund for Clubs, 64 Training Pitches for All League Clubs, One League Centre One Ambulance, Enrolment of our leagues on international statistical and video analytical platforms, Establishment of regional academies using existing SHS, Branding Women’s Football, Training of developmental Coaches,Referees , Players, Schools and Colleges, Integrating Corporate Ghana, Involving other Stakeholders such as Fans and Media.

Just as Jesus Christ encumbered resistance from the Pharisees and Sadducees when they realised Jesus’ fame was soaring high and the multitude were believing him to be the Messiah, so is Nana Yaw encountering from his detractors who now see his sermon on why he wants to be the GFA Capo and how he intends to transform the state of our local game have been accepted by the members of the Football family, are now working relentlessly to impute a wrong doing on his person.

The opponents see him as the most likely candidate to ascend the throne since he is the only candidate who cannot be associated with the current dying state of our game.He is the true symbol of change from the old order. The only way they can find fault about him to deny Ghanaians of his transparent, effective and efficient leadership is to brand him as an intermediary, a role he abandoned in 2018.

The opponents are imputing the following unfounded and unscrupulous allegations against Nana Yaw Amponsah:

    1. That he was registered by the English FA to represent players in 2008. This is incorrect . He was rather licensed by the GFA as FA licensed agent in 2008 to 2013 and later became an English FA intermediary in 2014.

    2. As of February 2019, Nana Yaw was still listed by the English FA as an intermediary. The response is, The English FA updated their intermediary list in April every year, so Nana Yaw’s de-registration as an intermediary in September 2018 was expected to be de-listed from the English FA website in April 2019. But in practice, he ceased to be an intermediary in September 2018 when he did not renew his license thereof.

    3. That Nana Yaw signed a contract with Abdul Latif Abubakar on September 30, 2018 for 2 years, thus he still holds an intermediary position. A microscopic look into the new FIFA intermediary role which began on April 1, 2015 requires that all contracts should be entered into the national registration system. And that if a contract is not entered into the system after 5 days, it makes the contract invalid. This contract failed to meet the required registration time and was not registered in the system.

    4. That he transfers players and takes commission between (10-15)% which is contrary to FIFA rule. They ground their argument on Article 7(3)(a) of FIFA regulation on payments to intermediaries which states: the total amount of remuneration per transaction due to intermediaries who have been engaged to act on a player’s behalf should not exceed 3% of the player’s basic gross income for the entire duration of the relevant employment contract.

They cunningly quote the above article in isolation without reference to the Stem Article 7(3) which states that while taking into account the relevant national regulations and any mandatory provisions of national and international laws, and as a RECOMMENDATION, players and clubs MAY adopt the following benchmarks: This Article clearly shows that the remuneration to intermediaries captured in Article 7(3)(a) is not MANDATORY but SUGGESTIVE. In our part of the world where intermediaries cater for airfares of players for trials abroad, their accommodation and feeding until they secure the supposed contracts, it will appear unreasonable to say that they should be entitled to only the suggested 3% commission by FIFA . However, the agreed percentage in the contract between the client and intermediary is always the case.

    5. They also attempt to imply that he doesn’t qualify to contest because of the point 2 in the declaration by intermediaries which states: I declare that I am currently not holding a position of official, as defined in point 11 of the Definitions section of the FIFA Statutes, nor will I hold such a position in the foreseeable future. For Christ sake, this is a requisition to become or to be registered as an intermediary which he satisfied in 2014 when he wanted to be so. As of that time, he was not holding any official position and couldn’t have foreseen that he was going to be a club president in 2016.

*From the foregoing analyses, a clear distinction should be made between the old FIFA/FA licensee which existed in 1996 until it was extinguished by the new intermediary which came into effect on April 1, 2015.

That Associations must be satisfied that in carrying out the activities of the intermediary, the intermediary contracted by a club and/or a player has no contractual relationship with leagues, associations, confederations or FIFA that could lead to a potential conflict of interest. Intermediaries are precluded from implying directly or indirectly, that such a contractual relationship with leagues, associations, confederations or FIFA exists in connection with their activities.

It is jurisdictional. Thus an intermediary in England can be in a potential conflict of interest situation with the leagues and association of England BUT NOT that of Ghana. Similarly, he cannot transfer players from Ghana to Slovenia if he is not an intermediary in Slovenia unless he registers in Slovenia to enable him undertake the transaction.

If you hate the duker, you must admire it for its swiftness. Nana Yaw Amponsah is a God fearing person who truly understands the football business, he is deeply connected locally and internationally to the movers and shakers of the football family, thus enhancing his chances of securing funding and sponsorship to improve the quality and standard of the game, he is a corporate person who will decode the Football People Tag and bring all and sundry on board to develop the game, he has the arsenal to resurrect colts football from grass to grace, he will empower clubs to be at a pedestal to enable them have huge share of this global multi-billion dollar industry, and has already started empowering our women in the game.

He recently introduced a Turkish company Fitcom who have signed sponsorship contracts with over 40 clubs in Division 1 , Premier and Female Premier Leagues.

Nana Yaw, ignore the naysayers and detractors, soldier on until you get to the promised land. Posterity will be the best judge. Most Ghanaians are behind you.
