Annoh-Dompreh warns EC to declare Afriyieh winner in Ablekuma North or face unrest

Member of Parliament for Nsawam/Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has called on members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to step in and defend their fellow party members whenever they face confrontations with members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Speaking passionately during a video shared by GHOne TV on Facebook on Thursday, February 6, 2025, Annoh-Dompreh urged party members to show solidarity and defend the NPP’s interests at all costs.

“If you are a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and you come across a fellow party member fighting with a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), step in and help your fellow party member,” he stated, calling for unity and a show of strength within the party.

The Minority Chief Whip went on to address the ongoing dispute surrounding the December 2024 Ablekuma North parliamentary election.

He issued a one-week ultimatum for the Electoral Commission (EC) to declare Akua Afriyieh, the NPP candidate, as the winner of the election. He firmly rejected any calls for a re-run, alleging that the NDC had destroyed vital electoral documents, including pink sheets, in an attempt to undermine the election results.

“If the NDC is not reasonable enough to accept that, based on the collated results, we have won the Ablekuma North parliamentary election, the NDC MPs will not know peace in Parliament,” he warned.

“We will continue to demonstrate. If they do not allow the EC to re-collate, they will not know peace. We are giving the EC one week to declare the results. Why did the NDC burn the pink sheets? Ablekuma North is for the NPP. We are winning,” Annoh-Dompreh concluded.

His remarks highlight the growing tensions surrounding the Ablekuma North election, with the NPP determined to assert its victory and ready to confront the NDC on any perceived electoral wrongdoings.

Tensions are still high in Ablekuma North as both NPP’s Akua Afriyieh and NDC’s Ewurabena Aubyn have put up billboards claiming victory, even though the Electoral Commission (EC) has not yet announced the final results.

The re-collation of the election results has been delayed because of constant disputes and chaos, creating a lot of uncertainty. As of now, Ablekuma North is the only constituency from the December 7 election without a declared winner.

The EC has yet to set new dates for when the results will be re-collated and finalized.

Delay transition until all Parliamentary results are released – Annoh-Dompreh to Akufo-Addo

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Nsawam Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has urged President Akufo-Addo to halt the transition process until the Electoral Commission (EC) has fully declared all parliamentary election results.

The appeal comes amid disputes over the declaration of several parliamentary results, including that of Nsawam Adoagyiri.

Speaking at the party’s office in Nsawam on Wednesday, December 11, Annoh-Dompreh criticized the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for what he described as reckless behavior.

He also called for the Electoral Commission to create a secure platform to announce the remaining results.

“Let me appeal to the outgoing president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. We know he has set in motion a transition process as a matter of course. We want to appeal to the president: he who comes to equity must come with clean hands, so the transition process should be halted.

“His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo should halt the transition process, and John Dramani Mahama, president-elect, must show the same equity, must speak to his people, and we must ensure that all the other seats are declared duly by the EC before the transition process goes on,” he stated.

Frank Annoh-Dompreh vehemently denied the allegations that he was involved in a shooting incident at the Nsawam Adoagyiri Collation Center, dismissing them as entirely untrue.

The accusations, made by the NDC Chairman in the Eastern Region, suggested that Annoh-Dompreh shot an observer, Richard Taboh, during a chaotic moment at the collation center.

Annoh-Dompreh rejected these claims, calling for a comprehensive investigation by the Ghana Police to thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

  • We have a tough skin, you can’t scare us – Annoh-Dompreh to Bagbin

We have a tough skin, you can’t scare us – Annoh-Dompreh to Bagbin

The Majority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has confidently declared that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will not be intimidated by Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin.

In a speech during the inauguration of a new party office in Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Annoh-Dompreh accused Bagbin of bias towards the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and alleged disregard for Supreme Court orders, asserting that these actions will ultimately define Bagbin’s legacy.

Despite his pointed criticisms, he emphasized the NPP’s resilience and respect for Bagbin’s position, stating, “We have a tough skin” as the party gears up for the upcoming December elections.

Annoh-Dompreh’s remarks come in response to the recent parliamentary dispute over the declaration of vacant seats.

Speaker Alban Bagbin had declared four parliamentary seats vacant in accordance with Article 97(g) and (h) of the 1992 Constitution.

This provision stipulates that any Member of Parliament (MP) who intends to run as an independent candidate or contest for a different party in the upcoming 2024 elections must vacate their seat.

The affected MPs were Cynthia Morrison, Kwadjo Asante, Andrew Amoako Asiamah, and Peter Kwakye Ackah. The Supreme Court’s suspension delays any immediate actions until the case is fully resolved.

However, the Supreme Court instructed Bagbin to halt his ruling after an application from New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs challenged the Speaker’s ruling.

The court, led by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, issued a stay of execution, halting the enforcement of Bagbin’s ruling until further legal proceedings take place.

But the Speaker instructed his lawyers to seek legal action to temporarily suspend the Supreme Court’s ruling.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has denied an application from Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, which sought to overturn the Court’s earlier ruling suspending his declaration of four parliamentary seats as vacant.

This legal battle began when Effutu MP Alexander Afenyo-Markin filed a suit challenging the Speaker’s declaration.

However, after carefully considering the arguments from all parties, including those from the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, the Supreme Court affirmed its previous ruling, stating that the Speaker’s appeal lacked merit.

Chief Justice comments reflected this conclusion, emphasizing, “We have considered the application, and we have come to the conclusion that the grounds supporting the application have no merit”.

In a related development, the Court also dismissed an objection from Thaddeus Sory, Bagbin’s counsel, regarding Justice Ernest Gaewu’s participation.

Mr Sory argued that Gaewu’s history as a parliamentary candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) might present a conflict of interest. However, the Supreme Court rejected this claim.

The ruling is significant, as both factions in Parliament currently assert their claim to a majority.

The NDC has destroyed water bodies than NPP – Annoh-Dompreh on galamsey

Frank Annoh-Dompreh, the Majority Chief Whip and MP for Nsawam-Adoagyir, has claimed that the previous National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration was more responsible for water pollution than the current New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.

This assertion was made in response to criticisms regarding the government’s handling of illegal mining, or galamsey, which is harming the country’s water resources.

During an emergency parliamentary session in Accra on Tuesday, Annoh-Dompreh challenged the Minority to a debate on the issue.

He asserted that a thorough investigation would reveal greater water pollution under the NDC’s tenure, asserting that their administration’s impact on water bodies was more severe.

He expressed readiness to engage in a debate to clarify the matter, emphasizing that past administrations also bear significant responsibility.

“I was very happy when the Minority Leader challenged us that we will debate this matter and the culprit will be mentioned. In fact, we are ready to debate now. If we are to look and investigate both sides of the house.

“You have had the opportunity to rule this country before. I can tell you; you polluted the water more than us. You polluted the water more than us. So, let’s get matters straight,” he stated.

Majority leadership apologises to Bagbin for “rude” comments by Sewfi Wiawso MP

The leadership of the Majority Caucus has rendered an unqualified apology to Speaker Alban Bagbin on behalf of the Member of Parliament for Sefwi Wiawso, Dr. Kwaku Afriyie, who was asked to leave the Chamber after making comments that the Speaker found disrespectful.

The confrontation occurred during a parliamentary session where the Speaker informed the House about the nomination of new judges to the Supreme Court.

Speaker Bagbin emphasized the importance of considering the expectations of the Ghanaian people in the decision-making process regarding these nominations.

He stated, “In giving you the information, I have given you an idea of the expectations of the people of Ghana. That is for you to consider as part of the report and the House to decide as to whether we will approve or disapprove those nominations.”

Dr. Afriyie took issue with the Speaker’s remarks, perceiving them as prejudicial.

“I believe that as one representing the good people of Sefwi Wiawso, it doesn’t lie in your mouth to remind us of the things that you have said,” he argued.

This assertion led to further off-the-record comments from Dr. Afriyie, which the Speaker reportedly overheard, prompting him to order the MP to vacate the chamber.

Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, later apologised to Speaker Alban Bagbin.

Meanwhile, the Sewfi Wiawso MP says he felt wrongfully chastised by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, on Monday’s parliamentary session.

Dr. Afriyie shared his perspective on the incident during an interview on Joy FM’s Top Story, stating that he felt misunderstood by the Speaker.

“If I say it does not lie in your mouth, tell me what is wrong with it,” Dr. Afriyie remarked, expressing his confusion over the Speaker’s reaction.

Dr. Afriyie defended his actions, insisting that he was merely expressing his opinion and had no intention of being disrespectful.

“What shocked me is that I was speaking what I was thinking and there was no disrespect. No misconduct on my part. In fact, he gave me permission to speak,” he explained.

Bow your head in shame – Majority Chief Whip chides Alan for religious comment

Parliament’s Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has criticized independent presidential aspirant Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen for suggesting that Ghanaians should elect a Christian president in the upcoming general elections due to the nation’s Christian majority.

Kyerematen made these remarks during the Easter Sunday Convention at the Dr. Thomas Wyatt Assembly of the Church of Pentecost, where he emphasized the importance of choosing a Christian leader who embodies Christlike qualities, stating that he was the most suitable candidate to lead the nation’s socioeconomic transformation.

Annoh-Dompreh, who represents Nsawam-Adoagyiri in the Eastern Region, described Kyerematen’s comments as highly inappropriate and detrimental to Ghana’s development.

“This is backwards, terrible and ugly, to say the least. The NPP has truly ‘suffered’ in bearing and tolerating you over the years. Show me one country globally who has succeeded by using your theory. Alan is clearly not relevant in our ‘modern’ body politics! Bow in shame!” the post said.

The former ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minister of Trade and Industry said, “As a predominantly Christian nation, as Christians, it is our responsibility that we elect a Christian leader who is also a Christlike leader.”

“If God touches your heart and you vote for Alan Kyrematen, the transformative leader, then I can assure you, as our Lord Jesus did on the cross, promise that ye shall be in paradise with him; you shall also be in paradise when I come into power,” he added.

  • I never slapped Annoh-Dompreh; have you seen me fight in Parliament? – K.T. Hammond

I never slapped Annoh-Dompreh; have you seen me fight in Parliament? – K.T. Hammond

The Member of Parliament for the Adansi Asokwa constituency, KT Hammond, recently addressed a viral video showing him deflecting Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh during a parliamentary proceeding on December 22, 2023.

The video garnered mixed reactions, with some accusing Mr. Hammond, who also serves as the Minister of Trade, of reacting violently towards his fellow lawmaker.

In response to the video, Hammond conducted a press conference at his residence in Adansi Asokwa, expressing his dismay at the frequent misinterpretation of his comments by people, especially the media.

He criticized the media for consistently misrepresenting his thoughts and comments without delving into the substance, leading to criticisms from various segments of the public.

Providing context to the parliamentary incident, KT Hammond explained that he was called into the chamber by Mr. Annoh-Dompreh to participate in discussions and subsequent voting on the appointment of judges undergoing vetting that day.

“I only made some gesticulations towards him to allow me to make my point regardless of the time constraints. Parliament had spent the whole day discussing other issues, so why was I distracted from making my point to wind up the business of the day?” he questioned.

Due to his relationship with one of the judges, who was his schoolmate at the University of Ghana, he wanted to contribute to the discussions on the floor.

While making his submissions, the Majority Chief Whip attempted to draw his attention, ostensibly due to time constraints.

Mr Hammond stated that he gestured towards Annoh-Dompreh to allow him to make his point quickly amid interjections from the Nsawam-Adoagyir MP.

“I never slapped him. Why would I slap a colleague Member of Parliament? Have you seen me fighting anybody in Parliament as others did during voting for the Speaker of Parliament and other violent scenes in the house?” the Adansi Asokwa lawmaker quizzed.

Mr Hammond refuted claims of being a violent person, emphasizing his non-violent history and the absence of any involvement in violent situations. He insisted that Annoh-Dompreh is one of his close confidants in politics and Parliament, and he would never react violently towards him.

Meanwhile, Mr. Hammond has picked nomination forms to contest the upcoming Parliamentary primaries in his constituency on the New Patriotic Party ticket.

If successful, he will be serving his 7th term in the house. He is expected to face stiff competition from three other aspirants who have already filed their nominations.

Expressing optimism, the legislator mentioned that he is responding to calls from his constituents to seek another term, given his track record of good works. He expressed confidence in getting the nod from the party delegates.

Several experienced Members of Parliament, including Joseph Osei-Owusu, MP for Bekwai, Dan Botwe, MP for Okyere, Samuel Atta Akyea, MP for Akyem Abuakwa South, and Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, have announced their decisions not to contest the upcoming Parliamentary primaries in January.

Mr Hammond highlighted that this would create a void in Parliament and adversely affect the quality of work in the legislative body.

He emphasized that replacing these experienced MPs would be a daunting task for the party.

“You go explain tire” – Minority mocks ‘defensive’ Annoh-Dompreh amidst ‘dumsor’ in Parliament

Parliament faced intermittent power outages during its session today.

The lights went out while Majority Chief Whip and MP for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, was addressing the House.

The incident led to mockery from the Minority side, prompting criticism from Annoh-Dompreh, who expressed displeasure at the Minority’s reaction.

He noted that the current erratic power supply is not comparable to what was experienced under the Mahama-led administration.

“What’s your problem? This is better than what we experienced under you. You should know this. Sam George, you should know this. This is far better than what we endured under your tenure,” he said.

Despite Frank Annoh-Dompreh’s comments, the Minority continued to mock the Majority, with an MP shouting, “You go explain tire,” implying that no amount of explanation can erase the fact that “dumsor” (erratic power supply) has returned under the Akufo-Addo-led government.

A few minutes later, Parliament was once again illuminated. The cause of the power restoration remains unclear, whether it was due to power being restored or a backup generator being activated.

Staff of the Ghana Grid Company, GRIDCo are threatening the return of incessant power cuts, popularly known as dumsor, which plagued the country some years back.

This is due to the failure of the government to settle some arrears of industry players.

In a statement registering their displeasure over the situation, the aggrieved staff noted that there will be a return of ‘dumsor’ this Christmas if the financial status of the company is not improved with immediate effect.

“The main cause of the poor cash flow situation is because the Cash Waterfall Mechanism which is used as the mode of payment to the industry players within the sector is not working and is suspected to have been discontinued,” they stated.

In the statement issued by the Senior Staff Association’s National Chairman and addressed to the Minister of Energy, the Board Chairman, and the Chief Executive of GRIDCo, the staff are pointing accusing fingers at ECG for their refusal to pay, in full, for the services rendered to them by the company.

They explain that GRIDCo bills ECG – their major customer – over GH₵100 million per month, out of which only about 18% to 25% is paid, and in an irregular manner.

I never ordered the destruction of Ken Agyapong’s billboards – Annoh-Dompreh

The Member of Parliament representing Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has refuted allegations suggesting that he destroyed billboards and artworks belonging to a prospective leader within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kennedy Agyapong.

These allegations arose from supporters of Kennedy Agyapong, who asserted that Annoh-Dompreh played a role in damaging campaign materials within his own electoral region, as the party’s special delegates congress loomed on the horizon.

However, Annoh-Dompreh vehemently repudiated any involvement in such actions. He emphasized that even though he may not share Kennedy Agyapong’s presidential aspirations, he would never resort to underhanded methods to undermine his campaign.

During a session with the Parliamentary Press Corp, Annoh-Dompreh conveyed his deep admiration for Kennedy Agyapong and underscored his unwavering commitment to refrain from tarnishing his reputation or campaign efforts.

He restated his dedication to fostering a culture of political integrity and equitable competition within the party.

“I don’t know anything about this so-called matter and I feel a lot of pain because this is somebody that I respect, he is not an enemy and I don’t even do this to my opponents in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) who have their artworks all over Nsawam and how much more will I go about pulling down the artwork of my colleague Member of Parliament.

“This is not the first time they are throwing this allegation at me and I want to tell my colleague that I don’t have anything personal against him.”

He tipped the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to be massively endorsed in the upcoming Special Delegates Congress of the NPP.

“If you zero in on what happened in Sunyani in 1998 and all the things that the other contestants have said, there are not going to be any surprises, it will be an emphatic endorsement for the most popular candidate and you know it is the Vice President and he is going to win hands down.”

Asamoah Gyan should be a subject of study in schools – MP proposes

Member of Parliament for Nsawam Adoagyiri constituency, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has put forward a proposal to include former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan as a subject of study in schools, aiming to inspire the younger generation.

Annoh-Dompreh’s suggestion arises following the outpouring of tributes for the Ghanaian football icon, who recently announced his retirement.

While acknowledging the abundant praise and recognition received by Gyan from football federations, fans, and stakeholders, Annoh-Dompreh believes that mere commendations are inadequate.

He argues that making Gyan a focal point of educational studies would not only pay homage to him but also serve as an inspiration to young people.

“A man with such great ability and talents both on and off the pitch deserves more, I strongly believe this personality and vision should be studied in schools to inspire the next generation,” he said on the floor of parliament.

“Again, a monument should be erected in his name to show our appreciation for the diverse contribution he has made to Ghana and the world at large.

“He is an iconic figure whose brand should be promoted to inspire other rich and endowed footballers to act likewise in the manner in which he contributed to the socio-economic development of our country.

“Speaker, he may [have] missed the golden opportunity of not qualifying Ghana to the semi-final in the 2010 World Cup.

“Nonetheless, he never missed the opportunity for restoring joy into the heart of Ghanaians with music, dance, and economic opportunities that he has offered the youth.”

Gyan, who also holds the record for being Africa’s top scorer in the World Cup with six goals, has hinted at a potential return to the game through coaching and scouting, among others.

The Promotion of Proper Sexual Human Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill 2021 will be the subject of a debate next week on either Tuesday or Thursday, according to the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Bagbin.

During deliberations on the Business Statement presented by the Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament Joseph Osei-Owusu, announced this information to the house.

Urgent action needed to address flooding in Accra – Minority to govt

The Minority in Parliament has urged the government to promptly allocate funds for the desilting of major drains in Accra as an urgent measure to mitigate the effects of flooding in the capital.

This follows the heavy rainfall on Wednesday, June 21, which the Caucus says led to injuries and property damage in parts of Accra.

In a statement on the floor of Parliament, Minority Chief Whip Governs Agbodza called for immediate action from the government to address the perennial flooding.

“It is not beyond the capability of Parliament to help the relevant agencies to finance the needed interventions to save lives and desilting major drains and gutters in Accra cannot be something beyond the funding of the government and with the approval of Parliament and that is why I call upon the House to take this opportunity to invite our colleague Minister of Works and Housing to brief the House as soon as he can.”

Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, however, says the Works and Housing Committee of Parliament should be more proactive in its work to help contain the situation.

“More often than not, the matter occurs, and then we tend to call on the Speaker to make a referral or rather expect the sector minister to be called upon to appraise the House and so what? It is high time our Committee leaders also get a bit proactive. These disasters have been occurring, and we would have expected the Committee on Works and Housing to at least, by now, start visiting some of these places and also coming to brief the House.”

  • It is Bawumia’s season not Alan – Annoh-Dompreh

It is Bawumia’s season not Alan – Annoh-Dompreh

Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh has stated that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will emerge victorious in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential race leading up to the 2024 general elections.

He stated that politics is defined by times and seasons therefore this is the time for Dr Bawumia to lead the NPP as flagbearer and subsequently lead the country as president.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, June 14, the Nsawam Adaogyiri lawmaker said about 119 of the Majority Members of Parliament support Dr Bawumia to be flagbearer.

“As at the last count we were doing over 119 MPs, some have whispered into my ears, some have shown it openly, and that is how it looks. I am praying that it gets better.”

He added “This is not Alan’s time, this is Dr Bawumia’s time. Politics is season and time, if you are not careful you will get it wrong. Look at the US, President Biden himself, look at all the processes he went through but today he is the president. People say Alan was closer in the last primaries we held so reasonably he will take over but the dynamism of leadership and politics should let them know that the narrative has changed.

“It is Dr Bawumia’s time, nobody can change it except God. We respect all the people who are seeking to lead our party. The fact of the matter is, I have been on the grounds, I have been to all the regions, if the primaries is conducted today Dr Bawumia will win, Alan cannot beat Bawumia.

“I am not a novice in this game, I have done grassroots mobilization all up to his time, if a win is coming I can see it and I can feel it. Even in the special delegates conference Dr Bawumia will not win with less than 70 percent of the special delegates’ conference. We have done our work and we are still working.”

Meanwhile Dr Bawumia has said he would file his nomination forms on Friday, June 16 to enable him to contest in the presidential race of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In a tweet, he said “Dear Friends, God willing tomorrow, Friday 16 June, I shall file my nomination forms and contest the @NPP_GH Presidential Primary. It is possible.”

He picked up the forms on Tuesday, May 30.

The forms were picked on his behalf by former Vice Chairman of the NPP, Fred Oware and former National Organiser Sammy Awuku.

The NPP opened nominations for its flagbearer elections on Friday, May 26.

The nominations will close on Saturday, June 24, according to a press release issued on Thursday, May 25.

“Consequently, an Aspiring Presidential Candidate shall obtain the Nomination Forms after payment of a non-refundable nomination fee of Fifty Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH¢50, 000.00) only, through a Banker’s Draft,” the statement said.

  • All NPP MPs stand by Byran Acheampong’s comment – Majority Chief Whip

All NPP MPs stand by Byran Acheampong’s comment – Majority Chief Whip

Majority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament (MP) for Nsawam/Adoagyiri Constituency in the Eastern Region, Mr Frank Annoh-Dompreh has affirmed the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP’s) full support for Minister of Food and Agriculture Bryan Acheampong’s recent remarks on the NPP’s commitment to retaining power at all costs, despite concerns over potential national security implications.

Mr Acheampong, who is also a former Minister of State in Charge of National Security, made this assertion when he addressed party supporters at Mpraeso on Saturday, 8th April 2023 and emphasised the party’s resolve to never hand over power to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) by any means necessary.

“NDC party will collapse. If the NDC dares to use threats, Violence, and foolishness in the 2024 election, we will let them know we have the men. We will show them that we have the men. We have the men![He screamed to emphasise]. It will never happen that we the NPP will stand on a platform to hand over power to the NDC. It will never happen! We will make sure NPP remain in government at all cost”.

He also stressed his party’s ability to develop the nation by citing how the government’s recent economic interventions have started yielding positive results, reflecting in the stabilisation of the cedi and the reduction in fuel prices.

While several Ghanaians and members of the opposition have condemned Mr Acheampong’s statement, his party however, is full support of his sentiments.

In a Facebook post addressing Mr Acheampong’s critics and those calling for his restraint in addressing such issues as the general elections approach, Mr Annoh-Dompreh expressed total support for his fellow party member and asked all critics to “leave Bryan alone”.

He accused the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) of hypocrisy in their criticisms.

This is because the NDC in a statement signed by its General Secretary, Fifi Kwetey, directly addressing Mr Acheampong’s comments, chided the MP for his unfortunate words and accused the NPP of attempting to subvert the will of the people in 2024, and assured that the NDC will also do everything possible within its power to protect the democratic will and the sovereignty of the Ghanaian people.

“The NDC, a party that both in the years 2001 and 2017, handed power to NPP when the people of Ghana voted for the NPP, wants to assure Ghanaians that we SHALL DO EVERYTHING that is necessary to protect the democratic will and the sovereignty of the Ghanaian people. We wish to assure the good people of Ghana of our resolve and readiness to do whatever is necessary to preserve the democratic will of the people – even at the peril of our lives. The supreme will of the Ghanaian electorate will be manifested come December 7, 2024.”

In rebuttal, the NPP also dismissed the NDC’s concerns and accused them of having ill-founded and hypocritical motives and thriving on diabolic propaganda with an ill attempt to emotionally blackmail Ghanaians in furtherance of their selfish political interest.

This is not the first time a Ghanaian politician has used strong statements to describe their party’s resilience.

The NPP cited similar statements by former President John Dramani Mahama and the NDC National Chairman, Asiedu Nketiah in previous years and expressed how as such, the NDC has no moral right to condemn or attack Bryan Acheampong.

“If anybody has to be arrested by the Police for treasonable comments, then certainly it is John Dramani Mahama for his continuous “Do or die for the NDC” in reference to the 2024 general elections, and Asidedu Nketiah for his brazen proclamation that members of the NDC are willing to sacrifice their lives to win the 2024 elections.

The use of such strong language in Ghanaian politics is unfortunately common. However, as the country approaches the 2024 general elections, the use of such rhetoric has the potential to compromise national security. It is crucial for all political parties to demonstrate restraint in their language and actions to ensure a peaceful and fair electoral process.

Annoh-Dompreh defends Bryan Acheampong; slams ‘hypocritical’ NDC

Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has defended his fellow MP representing the Abetifi Constituency over his comment suggesting that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will never hand over power to the opposition NDC.

He restated the support of the New Patriotic Party for Bryan Acheampong, a colleague MP and Minister of Agric.

Acheampong has come under opposition critique following controversial comments he made last Saturday at a party event in Mpraeso, stating among others that the NPP was never going to hand over power to the National Democratic Congress after the 2024 polls.

The NDC has since described the statement as reckless and treasonable and called for the minister’s arrest.

The NPP in a response said they stood by the minister’s comment and that he was responding to similar comments by opposition leaders including by John Mahama and Asiedu Nketiah, the former president and NDC National Chairman respectively.

Annoh-Dompreh who was at the event where Bryan spoke tweeted his support for the party position on Sunday, April 10.

“Leave Bryn alone. He said nothing new…The entire Party & the parliamentary Caucus is fully associated with him.. The hypocrisy of our colleagues is just nauseating often times…” he wrote.

    Bryan Acheampong booms

Bryan Acheampong‘s controversial views were made at a party rally over the weekend.

He is heard saying in a viral video that the NPP will do everything within its means to win the 2024 general elections.

According to him, the NPP is not ready to hand over power to the National Democratic Congress (NDC), therefore, his party will go to the election fully prepared.

He stated that the NPP has the men to match the opposition boot for boot during the 2024 polls.

Addressing party faithful after a health walk through the principal streets of Mpraeso on Saturday, April 8, 2023, Bryan Acheampong stressed that “We will show NDC that we have the men if they want to do intimidate, harass us or do anything foolish during the 2024 elections…It will not happen that we will hand over power to NDC. We’ll use any means for NPP to stay in power.”

Ministerial approval: Party politics lost to patriotism – Annoh-Dompreh

The Members of Parliament who voted in favor of the six ministerial nominees on Friday demonstrated patriotism, according to the Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh.

Speaking in an interview on Joy FM’s Newsnight on Monday, he explained that the NPP MPs “went out there to preach patriotism and the fact that our President has shown demonstrable readiness to downsize… for a long time, deputy regional ministers we don’t have them and so for me, it is a significant beginning.

“So we put all together and we reached out to our colleagues… ,” he said.

He added that “at the end of the day patriotism won over partisan.”

According to him, the outcome of the vote could mean that the NDC MPs “were tired of the party’s position.”,

He said that when pushed to their breaking point, people have the propensity to react, and that’s exactly what happened on Friday.

His comments come in the wake of criticism over the approval of Akufo-Addo’s ministerial nominees on Friday after some NDC MPs defied their party’s orders to vote to approve the nominees.

Reacting to the bribery claims, he noted that the NPP MPs did not bribe the Minority as alleged by Cape Coast South MP, George Kweku Ricketts-Hagan.

He, however, stated that the Majority appealed to their sense of patriotism, adding that “we spoke to their conscience. We took advantage of their friendship.

He further challenged the Cape South MP to provide evidence to prove his claims.

“He who alleges must prove, if he has a basis that somebody was bribed, he should prove it,” he challenged.

“For us, we did not rely on any form of bribery, we spoke to their conscience, we took advantage of the friendship, we spoke and underscored the need for patriotism to win at the end of the day,” he clarified.

He further stated that the issue will be raised in Parliament on Tuesday when the House meets.

  • Murtala Mohammed fumes; accuses NPP of using “useless” tactics to delay voting on ministerial nominees

The Member of Parliament for Tamale Central Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed has lashed out at his colleague MPs on the Majority side, following the events of the House on Friday, March 24, 2023.

He said the Majority members of the House of are using “frivolous” and “useless” tactics to delay voting on the new ministerial appointees.

Speaking to JoyNews’ Kwaku Asante in Parliament on Friday, Mr Mohammed said that the NPP is purposely delaying voting on the appointees, because they do not have the numbers to get the ministers-designate approved.

“One of my colleagues just drew my attention that the NPP are just 120 in the chamber. It got to time for voting, we finished with the debate, and polling booths and everything were ready, It was Afenyo Markin who started with his shenanigans, trying to delay the process – perhaps the people who are not there they are expecting them to get here,” he said.

Mr Mohammed added that “even when the speaker ruled that we needed to go ahead with the voting, you have Annoh Dompreh who got up demanding that we should tilt the position of the polling booths- those are frivolous, every useless reason for which the delay is happening.”

The Tamale Central MP insisted that once the debate on the appointments has been concluded, voting must be done today (Friday) whether or not the NPP has the numbers.

This comes after the Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin suspended sitting because the MPs could not come to a consensus.

The sitting was suspended to give the leadership of the two sides the opportunity to come to a consensus after the Majority asked that seating arrangements, ballot box placements and others be altered while the Minority insisted that the vote should go on.

The voting process was earlier postponed from Thursday evening to Friday.

Meanwhile, Mr Mohammed added that “I wasn’t expecting our Minority Leader to make the statement he made, when he said that if they aren’t prepared to vote then because of Ramadan we should have the voting done next week.”

“I totally disagree with him. It is very clear the NPP doesn’t have the numbers and that is why we are insisting that we will do the voting, we have finished with the debate, and there is nothing more left to be done, except go ahead to vote.”

These are the ministers-designate who are expected to be approved

    1. Member of Parliament for Adansi Asokwa, K.T Hammond has been appointed Minister-designate for Trade and Industry.

    2. Member of Parliament for Abetifi, Brian Acheampong has been appointed Minister-designate for Food and Agriculture.

Gov’t must have a long-term plan for FSHS to prevent it from collapsing in coming years – Haruna

In the next ten years, if the government’s Free Senior High School (FSHS) program is not well structured, Haruna Iddrisu, a former minority leader, has warned, it may collapse.

He contended that the program must include a means testing mechanism to determine who can pay and who cannot pay.

The Tamale South MP indicated that organizations like UNESCO have all advised on the matter which the government has ignored for political expediency.

“Mr. Speaker, we are doing what we ought to have done several years back, UNESCO was established somewhere 95 and Ghana has benefited enormously from them. Ghana needs to take advantage of UNESCO’s advice on secondary education. How accessible is it, what is the quality, are we running a secondary education that produces quantity and not quality?

“Ghana needs a test mechanism to determine who can pay and who cannot pay. This political thing of wanting to please everybody at the detriment of quality will hang in this country in the next decade if we don’t look back,” he stated.

Government has between 2017 and 2021 spent over 5 billion cedis on the free SHS policy.

Reacting to the assertion of Haruna Iddrisu, majority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh stated the program is work in progress and thus will in future accommodate the suggestions of means testing.

The Nsawam-Adoagyiri MP however argued the policy has brought relief to many families.

  • Oversight powers should be given to Pan African Parliament – Frank Annoh

Oversight powers should be given to Pan African Parliament – Frank Annoh

Frank Annoh-Dompreh, the majority chief whip, has urged the newly elected Pan African Parliament (PAP) President to see that the Parliament is granted oversight authority.

He asserts that the PURC and the agencies of AUCs have been given authority to oversee the PAP, and that the PAP is in competition with the PURC for this authority.

This, he said, should not be the case.

He explained that the PAP was formed with a mandate to oversee parliaments in Africa. Therefore, “that function that is being performed by the agencies of the AUC and PURC must be relinquished.”

“Nobody should tell me any theory, that is what it is.  From whichever way you view it, we have an oversight that is backed by protocol and nobody will take it away from us.

“We will demand that and will make that suggestion to you with the greatest of respect that let that oversight powers be given back to PAP,” he appealed to the newly elected PAP President, Chief Fortune Charumbira.

He made this appeal during a Pan African Parliament meeting in South Africa.

He maintained that the oversight function must be given to PAP, noting that it is well defined in PAP’s rules of procedure under rule 17.

According to the legislator, the PURC, AU and PAP are supposed to work in sync.

“I hope today will be a day that all of us will rally around and say that enough is enough! We cannot come back one year after and be talking about the same thing,” he said.

He also commended the President of PAP and the Bureau for maintaining peace at meetings.

According to him, he has proven beyond doubt that the confidence reposed in him is justified.

“We want to make an appeal to the African Union and all agencies of the African Union that gone were the days when PAP will come here and be fighting. For a long time we are not fighting again, we as an institution are making a conscious effort to reform ourselves.

“That is why we changed our rules of procedure. That is why for a long time the PAP and the PURC were not meeting but through the leadership – our president, the new Bureau struck that understanding and there is a cross-fertilization and working together,” he said.

Annoh-Dompreh goes hard on ‘clueless’ Buaben Asamoa; calls for his dismissal from Alan’s team

The Majority Chief Whip in Parliament, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has asked former Minister of Trade and Industry, Alan Kyerematen, to dismiss former Adentan MP, Yaw Buaben Asamoa from his campaign team.

According to him, the former Member of Parliament for Adenta, who is currently the official spokesperson for the Alan Kyerematen campaign, has become clueless about things surrounding him.

Stating this in a tweet, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, who is also the MP for Nsawam/Adoagyiri, said it is time Alan Kyerematen gets rid of Yaw Buaben Asamoa from his team.

“Mr. Alan Kyerematen should jettison YB off his campaign team. He simply cannot connect & has become clueless… I pity your campaign strategies… pathetic,” he wrote in a tweet.

In an earlier GhanaWeb report, Yaw Buaben Asamoa alleged that New Patriotic Party Members of Parliament are being coerced into supporting the bid of Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

He also claimed that the Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, and some leaders of the party are attempting to force some MPs to join the vice president on a planned visit to the Manhyia Palace.

“Now as we speak, MPs are being called and threatened into joining a certain delegation for the upcoming Akwasidae just to prove that they have numbers and Annoh-Dompreh is into it.

“How are MPs who are supposed to be thinking and strategizing about protecting their seats being forced into joining a presidential campaign and are being threatened? Akwasidae is coming and we will all witness it. They are saying 100 MPs will follow the Vice President,” he said.

Alan Kyerematen is vying for the vacant position of the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), even as he hopes to become president of Ghana.

  • Ghana to receive measles vaccines in the next 14 days – Annoh-Dompreh

Ghana to receive measles vaccines in the next 14 days – Annoh-Dompreh

In the coming two weeks, the country will assess some measles vaccines provided by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), according to Frank Annoh-Dompreh, the majority chief whip in parliament.

Several parts of the country have been hit with a shortage of vaccines in the last few months despite claims by the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) that over GH¢70 million has been released for the procurement of the vaccines.

Frank Annoh-Dompreh was reacting to a statement by the MP for Tamale North, Alhassan Suhuyini on the outbreak of measles in the Northern Region, due to the shortage of vaccines in the country.

He said government is committed to addressing the challenge.

“It is a fact that it’s now three vaccines that are in shortage. The BCG, measles-rubella and oral polio. For all the other 10, we have enough in stock. I am also told that the Ministry has made some commitments. Some good monies have been paid to UNICEF and the vaccines relative to measles are delivered through air freight per the arrangements with UNICEF, the vaccines should arrive in a fortnight”.

Alhassan Suhuyini has expressed fear over the possible closure of schools in his constituency following the outbreak of Measles.

The lawmaker says schools in his constituency are likely to be closed down as a result of the shortage of vaccines in parts of the country.

“It’s beyond my area, and it’s alarming because it’s a very contagious disease, if care is not taken, very soon many schools will have to close down. It’s shameful that we should be talking about the outbreak of Measles given how far we have come. I’m greatly worried, it’s so disturbing that we couldn’t store the necessary vaccines for some of these preventable diseases.”

The Paediatric Society of Ghana last week disclosed that 120 cases of measles were recorded in the Northern Region by end of December 2022 due to the shortage of essential vaccines.

The shortage of vaccines has the potential to increase the vulnerability of children to the diseases the vaccines seek to protect them against.

Ofori-Atta must be maintained to revive the economy – Annoh-Dompreh

Frank Annoh-Dompreh, a member of parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, believes Ken Ofori-Atta, the finance minister, can jumpstart Ghana’s economy.

The MP claims that requests from some of his parliamentary colleagues that the president fire the finance minister will do more to stall the government’s efforts to revive the economy.

Annoh-Dompreh stated during an interview on Badwam on Adom TV that the finance minister should be permitted to continue working as he revitalizes the Ghanaian economy.

“I think we are making progress. The times dictate that we should be at peace with each other. Before I say anything it means I have spoken to people. Now it appears things are getting better so we have to keep things running,” the Majority Chief Whip said.

His statement comes on the back of a call by the Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, Andy Appiah-Kubi for President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to honour his promise to fire Ken Ofori-Atta.

Ofori-Atta was untouched in a recent ministerial shakeup that saw Akufo-Addo nominate seven persons for ministerial and deputy positions in his government.

Annoh-Dompreh also called on the NPP in parliament to unite in breaking the 8 in the 2024 election by allowing the finance minister to retain his office.

“We are ready to break the 8 but we need unity among ourselves, “he said.

The majority chief Whip who has openly declared his support for the Vice President believes the majority in parliament should look at the larger picture of the 2024 general election, though he respects the views of those calling for the removal of the finance minister.

The assertions of Annoh-Dompreh have been shared by some members of the majority who are confident the finance minister should be allowed the fix the economy rather than replace him.

The economic and digital messiah – Annoh-Dompreh eulogises Bawumia

The Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has praised Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for leading Ghana’s digitalisation drive.

Annoh-Dompreh was reacting to news of Ghana being ranked number one in the 2022 Digital Competitiveness Index in Anglophone West Africa.

Ghana scored 66 percent on the index, half a percentage point more than Cape Verde, which was ranked second-best. Nigeria completed the top three with a 65 percent score.

The index was compiled by the pan-African think tank Digital Foundation Africa, and it measures and ranks which of the West African states is implementing and adopting good digitalisation policies while mapping the growth of its digital development sectors for socio-economic transformations.

The index was compiled using about 10 variables, ranging from mobile money and online transactions, to digital infrastructure and policy implementation.

“The Ranking would guide ECOWAS states in their approach in the implementation and development of the digital sector hence translating into how citizens transact and use digital in their daily lives. After the release of the index, activities will be held to engage governments and other stakeholders per country to help in the direction and future of the digital sector,” parts of a statement announcing the 2022 Digital Competitiveness Index read.

Reacting to the development in a tweet shared on January 24, 2023, Annoh-Dompreh, the Member of Parliament for Nsawam Adoagyiri, described Bawumia as an economic and digitalisation genius.

His tweet was a retweet of a feat as shared by a pro-NPP activist. He captioned his post, “The Economic & Digital Messiah.”

  • 2024 will certainly be a Bawumia-Mahama game – Annoh-Dompreh

    2024 will certainly be a Bawumia-Mahama game – Annoh-Dompreh

The 2024 presidential election will undoubtedly feature a contest between Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former President John Dramani Mahama for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), according to Majority Chief Whip in Parliament Frank Annoh-Dompreh.

This is despite the fact that neither the NPP nor the NDC have chosen their standard bearers for the election.

At least four party stalwarts from the NPP have expressed interest in serving as the party’s flagbearer.

They are Kennedy Agyapong, a lawmaker from Assin Central, Alan Kyerematen, a former trade and industry minister, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, a former general secretary of the NPP, and Dr. Owusu Akoto Afriyie, a former minister of food and agriculture.

Dr. Bawumia has not yet publicly stated that he plans to run for office, although he most certainly will.

    http://tigpost.co/respect-bawumia-he-is-likely-to-get-70-80-votes-in-npp-primaries-yaw-adomako/

According to Mr. Frank Annoh-Dompreh, Dr. Bawumia represents hope for both the governing party and Ghana as a whole.

“It will certainly be between BMW( our hope): and JM( The spent force)!” he tweeted on Wednesday, January 18.

The Nsawam-Adoagyiri lawmaker further indicated that Dr Bawumia “is a gift to this Nation, let’s not take it for granted. Do away with your ‘Hatred’ for him.. He will rescue us, certainly. Dr.Bawumia, ever proud of him.”

  • I’m not ready for your street politics – Majority Chief Whip ‘banters’ with Johnnie Hughes over Ken Ofori-Atta

I’m not ready for your street politics – Majority Chief Whip ‘banters’ with Johnnie Hughes over Ken Ofori-Atta

Things got a bit heated between the Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh and broadcaster Johnnie Hughes during a social media debate over the censure motion against Ken Ofori-Atta and the ongoing Domestic Debt Exchange Programme.

Annoh-Dompreh who is the Member of Parliament for Nsawam Adoagyiri had earlier sent a caution to the Finance Ministry to review its decision to include individual bondholders in the DDEP.

“The Finance Minister (Ministry) must as a matter of urgency review ASAP its decision and resolution on individual bondholders. I don’t agree with them and I think it’s unfair and untenable!” he tweeted.

His tweet courted the attention of Johnnie Hughes who reminded the lawmaker that the situation could have been avoided if the majority caucus participated in the voting on the recommendations by the committee that probed the censure motion against Ken Ofori-Atta late last year.

“But Chief Whip @FAnnohDompreh, you and your colleagues had the chance to save us all through a simple secret ballot in Parliament after that Appiah-Kubi led presser asking for the head of KOA. What happened? Did you fail the people? Who whipped who in line?” he quizzed.

But Annoh-Dompreh exhorted Johnnie Hughes’ mind to the fact that his post is only relative to the issue of the individual bondholders and not nothing more.

“I am concerned about a specific matter!.. Don’t get it wrong!”, he tweeted in reply.

Johnnie Hughes maintained his course of reasoning and posed another question to Annoh-Dompreh “please did you fail the people? Who whipped who in line?”.

At this point Annoh-Dompreh gave a response considered harsh by the journalist.

“I am not ready for your ‘street’ politics!.. We have a matter to deal with! Seek to understand who I am and stop this! I am not interested in your arguments. As far as I am concerned, Ken has erred this time, and it must be corrected,” he retorted.

It created some banter that went on for some time until the two men called a truce.

Annoh-Dompreh has not hidden his aversion to the decision by the Ministry of Finance to include individual bondholders in the DDEP.

He believes that there could be dire repercussions on the middle class and the financial sector if the plans outlined by the finance ministry are adopted.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Finance has extended the deadline for the DDEP with a promise to engage extensively with stakeholders.

This would be the third extension since the programme was launched on December 5, 2022.

In a tweet sighted by GhanaWeb Business, the Ministry of Finance noted that the extension was due to pending further stakeholder engagements with institutional and individual investors who were recently invited to join the debt exchange programme.

“Building consensus is key to a successful economic recovery for Ghana,” a tweet from the Finance Minister’s office said.

Review unfair, untenable debt exchange programme – Annoh-Dompreh to Finance Ministry

Member of Parliament for Nsawam Adoagyir, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has called on the Ministry of Finance to review its decision to include individual bondholders in the government’s domestic debt exchange programme.

The MP in a tweet sighted by GhanaWeb opined that the ministry’s decision is not only unfair but one that is hard to defend.

“The Finance Minister (Ministry) must as a matter of urgency review ASAP its decision and resolution on individual bondholders. I don’t agree with them and I think it’s unfair and untenable!” he tweeted.

The comment by the MP comes on the back of a recent petition presented to parliament by a group of individual government bondholders.

The group has called on the legislature to intervene in their call on government to exclude individual bondholders from the debt exchange programme.

The bondholders are faced with limited time to sign up for the restructuring deal scheduled to expire on Monday, January 16, 2023.

According to the government, the aim of the programme is to make Ghana’s debt sustainable as a key component of securing a $3 billion loan deal with the International Monetary Fund.

Addressing the individual bondholders after receiving their petition on Friday, January 13, 2023, the Majority Leader of Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said there is a need for government to hold further engagements on the implementation of the programme.

He noted that the policy if not thought through could lead to the wiping of the middle class in the country.

“What we talking about is that many of these bondholders also belong to the middle class and that’s where the major worry is…If we are wiping away the middle class that could be dangerous, so we need to have some further dialogue on this. I’m not sure government takes interest and joy in suppressing anyone no government will have any joy in doing that,” he said.

“So government thinks that this is the best way forward, however even if it is, we need to engage, reflect and then move on and that will encourage some people who have some doubt to better appreciate where we are,” he stated.

According to the majority leader, the government, moving on with the programme with caution could spell doom for the country.

“Nothing can substitute for discussions, round table discussions and engagements wherever we find ourselves in. I think it’s important that we go back to the drawing table to have engagements with the major stakeholders.”

“As he said, all of us are in it. And if we don’t manage well, we’ve gone through this before, way back some 25, 30 years ago and repositioning was a major, major difficulty.”

“Today many people are coming on board and if this thing should happen, how do we build confidence and trust and reconstruct a new savings culture?” he said.

The majority leader was joined by the ranking member of Parliament’s Finance Committee, Cassiel Ato Forson when the petition was presented to the house.

The group of bondholders convened by Senyo Hosi was led by private legal practitioner, Martin Kpebu when they called on the house.

  • 98 NPP MPs agree to support Ofori-Atta after Minority, NPP leadership meeting

Prior to Ken Ofori-Atta, the beleaguered minister of finance, reading the 2023 Budget Statement on November 24, the Majority Caucus in Parliament has patched up all of its frontal rifts.

On November 23, a meeting between parliamentarians and NPP leaders took place, during which a number of agreements were made.

The Minister will be assisted in presenting the budget and seeing that it is appropriated, and he or she will be permitted to see out the current stage of negotiations with the International Monetary Fund, or IMF.

The meeting comes on the back of a renewed call by some 98 NPP MPs who had threatened to boycott the budget presentation if Ofori-Atta appears to present it.

A statement co-signed by Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh and NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong read in part: “At a meeting this evening, the 22 of November 2022, involving the Majority Caucus, the Leadership of the Party and the Council of Elders, it has been agreed by all to refocus and recline to the earlier position requested by the President.”

The three broad areas agreed on were as follows

    1. The demand be stood down until the conclusion of the round of negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) which would feed into the 2023 Budget;

    2. The presentation of the 2023 Budget Statement and Economic Policy on the 24th November 2022 by the Finance Minister on behalf of the President; and

    3. The subsequent presentation and passage of the Appropriation Bill

“The meeting agreed that the President would act upon the initial request of the NPP Parliamentary Caucus after the conclusion of these matters,” the statement added.

The Minority in Parliament has expressed disappointment at the Majority Caucus in failing to support the censure motion against the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta.

The Minority filed a censure motion against the Finance Minister over allegations of conflict of interest, financial recklessness leading to the collapse of the Ghana Cedi and gross mismanagement of the economy among others.

Some New Patriotic Party Members of Parliament also called on the President to dismiss the Finance Minister due to the current economic hardships. They had threatened to boycott the 2023 Budget presentation scheduled for Thursday, November 24.

But national executives and the Council of Elders of the NPP on Tuesday stepped in to resolve the impasse between the NPP members of the Majority Caucus and the President over the demands for the sacking of the Finance Minister.

A statement jointly signed by the Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh and the General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Koduah as a resolution to the ongoing impasse, urged the Majority MPs to put their demands on ice until negotiations for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) bail-out are completed.

Addressing the media on Wednesday, the Minority Leader in Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu said the Majority caucus has failed the public by not supporting the censure.

“President Akufo-Addo will go down in history as the President who mostly disrespected public appeal because as far as we are concerned public opinion is not supportive and favourable to the continuous stay in office of this failing, beleaguered lame-duck Finance Minister Ken Ofori Atta.”

“We feel let down, and we feel betrayed by the Majority caucus, who have shown no wits in supporting us with our impeachment process…We are not abandoning our censorship motion, and we are in it for the long haul,” the Minority Leader told Journalists on Wednesday.

  • No diabolism will work against you – Annoh-Dompreh to Bawumia

Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Adoagryri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh has said the Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia will make history in Ghana’s politics.

He said no diabolic agenda will work against the Vice President.

“No schemes, nor evil strategies, nor diabolism, nor hate deductions could set us apart.. We are set to make history, so shall it be…” he tweeted after Dr Bawumia served notice that he won’t allow people to use his name for corrupt activities because his integrity is his most cherished asset in life.

Dr. Bawumia reacted swiftly on his Facebook page on Monday, November 14 following investigations by journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas that a Minister of State at the Ministry of Finance, Charles Adu Boahen, had used the Vice President’s name to solicit for $200,000 from investors, in order for he (Adu Boahen) to facilitate a meeting with the Vice President.

In his strongly worded reaction on Facebook, Dr. Bawumia, who is regarded by many as one of the decent politicians around, fumed at the alleged conduct of the Minister, adding that he was not aware of any such dealing by the Minister.

The Vice President described the position of the Minister of State as untenable, following the revelation, and called for his summary dismissal.

Shortly after the Vice President’s post, the President issued a release announcing the dismissal of the Minister of State and also referred his conduct to the Special Prosecutor for further action.
