Ghanaian-US based pastor who killed his wife in 2021 sentenced to life imprisonment

Sylvester Ofori, a self-proclaimed prophet and former leader of Floodgates of Heaven International Ministries in Orlando, Florida, has admitted to killing his estranged wife but disputes claims that the murder was premeditated.

Ofori’s defense attorney, Christopher Smith, informed a local judge during jury selection that while Ofori acknowledges the act of homicide, he will contest the assertion of premeditation.

This comes despite evidence, including recordings of Ofori threatening to kill his wife, Barbara Tommey, the day before the incident.

Ofori, 39, faces charges of first-degree murder in connection with Tommey’s death on September 8, 2020.

Reports indicate that Ofori approached Tommey as she was attempting to enter her workplace at the Navy Federal Credit Union.

Witnesses saw him following her with a gun, and after she knocked on the doors for help, he shot her, later inflicting additional fatal wounds. Ofori then calmly left the scene and drove away.

Tommey’s sister captured a confrontation between the couple on video, where Ofori threatened to kill her, which was later verified by detectives. The couple had been separated for about three months prior to the shooting.

Described on its website as a renowned prophet, Floodgates of Heaven International Ministries characterized Ofori as a powerful spiritual figure with deep roots in his Christian faith.

In a different perspective, Prophet Elisha Salifu Amoako of Alive Chapel International in Ghana suggested that Ofori’s actions were influenced by what he termed a “calculated witchcraft attack.”

Amoako claimed that he had previously warned Ofori about potential dangers and attributed the incident to supernatural forces rather than Ofori’s character.

DeSantis intends to gather funds in Florida and Texas for Trump

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is going to help raise funds for former President Donald Trump in the next few weeks. He made a promise to do this when he met with Trump last month. This shows that DeSantis wants to support Trump’s potential run for president in 2024. Two people who know about this confirmed it.

The people didn’t want to give their names because the details are not final yet and plans might change in the next few weeks. However, DeSantis is contacting people who give money while his finance team is working fast to plan a schedule that would involve visits to Florida and Texas.

DeSantis is trying to make peace with Trump after months of arguing. Trump used to make fun of DeSantis, but now they are trying to work together. The progress also shows that DeSantis is trying to use his successful fundraising skills to help him if he decides to run for president in 2028. This could be helpful if Trump can’t run again because of term limits.

Roy Bailey, a Dallas investor who helped raise money for DeSantis during his presidential campaign, said he believes other supporters and donors will also follow DeSantis’s lead. “We will be looking at the people who gave money to DeSantis in the past but haven’t given money to President Trump. ” We will try to get donations from those people for him. “That will make a lot of money. ”

DeSantis, who was thought to be a strong candidate to compete against Trump, raised over $183 million for his Republican presidential campaign, but he did not win. The super PAC Never Back Down raised over US$145 million, which is a lot of money and they could collect as much as they wanted. DeSantis collected over $200 million for his 2022 campaign in Florida.

“We are putting effort into raising money to support President Trump and other Republicans running for office,” said Taryn Fenske, spokesperson for DeSantis, in a text to The Associated Press.

10 individuals got hurt by gunfire after brawl broke out – Florida sheriff

A young person with a gun hurt 10 people after he started shooting at a party in Florida at a busy, late-night event at Cabana Live in Sanford. The shooting was sparked by an earlier fight at the party according to an eye witness.

A security guards quickly stopped and took away the gun from the shooter and another guard put handcuffs on him until the police came.

The sheriff’s office said that none of the victims were seriously hurt. Ten people went to the hospital because they were shot. Most of the shots were below their waists.

The shooting on Sunday showed that there is a big problem with guns in America. It is getting harder for police to stop violence because kids can easily get guns.

A 16-year-old was taken to a jail for young people in Florida after being accused of a crime on Sunday. He was accused of murder, shooting a gun in a public place, using a gun while committing a crime, and having a gun illegally as a minor.

People who saw it said the shooting began after a fight with fists started. Someone who wasn’t part of the fight pulled out a gun and started shooting at a group of people, according to the arrest report.

Two police officers who were helping security at the place came and took the teenager into custody. The police found a 9mm gun and used shell casings that matched the bullets.

A message on Cabana Live’s Facebook page said they were having a private event when the shootings happened and all their workers are okay. A woman who picked up the phone on Sunday afternoon said that there was nothing more to add.

“We’re working with the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office and praying for everyone involved,” the post on social media said.

  • Florida woman who sold Biden’s daughter’s diary received one-month jail sentence

Florida woman who sold Biden’s daughter’s diary received one-month jail sentence

A mother in Florida was given a one-month jail sentence and three months of being confined at home for stealing and selling the diary of President Joe Biden’s daughter to a conservative group.

Aimee Harris got a punishment in court in Manhattan by Judge Laura Taylor Swain. She called the actions of the woman from Palm Beach, Florida, “awful”.

Harris said she was part of a plan and admitted to getting $20,000 out of $40,000 paid by Project Veritas for buying things that belong to Ashley Biden, the president’s daughter.

Project Veritas started in 2010 and says it’s a news group. It is most famous for using hidden cameras to expose and embarrass news outlets, labor unions, and Democratic politicians.

Harris cried and said sorry for letting Ashley Biden’s personal writings be sold. She found Ashley’s diary and other things at a friend’s house in Delray Beach, Florida in 2020. Ashley thought her things were safe there when she stayed for a little while in 2020.

Harris said she doesn’t think she’s better than the law. The prosecutor wants her to go to prison because she missed many court dates. She says she couldn’t go because she was busy taking care of her 8 and 6 year old kids.

“I went through really bad abuse at home for a long time, and I also had bad experiences with sexual trauma,” she told the judge.

With a lawyer representing Ashley Biden in the courtroom, Harris said sorry to the president’s daughter for sharing details about her childhood and life.

When the judge decided the punishment, he said that Harris and another person, Robert Kurlander, from nearby Jupiter, Florida, tried to sell Ashley Biden’s things to Donald Trump’s campaign but it didn’t work.

The judge said that Harris wanted to influence the country’s politics because he was greedy.

Kurlander and Harris admitted to working together to move stolen items to different states. Kurlander hasn’t been punished yet.

Lawyer Anthony Cecutti asked for no jail time for his client because of her tough life and taking care of her kids while dealing with abuse and violence.

“She feels bad and judged for what she did,” he said.

Assistant US Attorney Robert Sobelman wanted Harris to go to prison because he has repeatedly shown a lack of respect for the law and the justice system.

“Ms” “Sobelman said that Harris is not the person who was harmed in this situation. ” MsGreta is the teacher for our class. Biden is the one who has been hurt in this situation.

He said that in the summer of 2020, Harris took Ashley Biden’s diary, digital storage card, books, clothes, suitcase, and anything else she could find, so she could sell it and make a lot of money.

She tried to hurt Ms. Biden’s dad, he said.

Harris was told to go to prison in July. When she left the courthouse, she didn’t want to talk.

Ashley Biden’s lawyer didn’t want to talk about it, but he did write a letter to the judge for her the day before, but it wasn’t added to the court records right away.

US citizen halted during ‘hamster wheel’ ocean crossing

Arrest ensued for a Florida resident who tried to travel to London by running across the Atlantic Ocean with a DIY mechanism resembling a hamster wheel.

The US Coast Guard caught Reza Baluchi about 70 miles away from Tybee Island, Georgia on August 26th.

Officials said the runner, who is 44 years old, did not want to get off the boat and stayed on it for many days. He also said he might harm himself.

Mr Baluchi has attempted three trips that were very much like his current one. However, all three of these trips were stopped by the Coast Guard.

The makeshift machine he was using looks like a wheel. It has paddles that push it forward when the wheel spins.

According to the criminal complaint, the US Coast Guard officers decided that Baluchi was doing a very unsafe trip because the boat was floating due to wiring and buoys.

Mr Baluchi started his journey when officials were getting ready for a big hurricane.

However, he didn’t want to leave the boat for three days and said he would hurt himself with a long knife. According to legal documents, he also said that he had a bomb on the plane.

On September 1st, he finally gave up and left his ship after being taken to a Coast Guard base in Miami.

Officials later found out that the “bomb” was not real.

Now, he is being accused by the government of obstructing boarding and breaking a Captain’s order.

We don’t know if he has hired a lawyer to help him in his criminal case.

Mr Baluchi has been arrested before for going out to sea in his ship, which he calls a “bubble”.

In 2021, he got arrested because he was rescued while attempting to ride his way from Florida to New York. He had drifted about 30 miles south from where he started.

In 2014, he needed help getting out of a similar machine close to St Augustine. Then, two years later, he had to be saved again from the water near Palm Beach, Florida.

Based on past interviews, Mr. Baluchi said that he was trying to go on these trips to gather funds for different reasons, like helping homeless people and supporting the Coast Guard.

“I want to collect money for homeless people, the Coast Guard, the police department, and the fire department,” he shared with WOFL-TV in Orlando in 2021.

Four astronauts return to Earth after six-month deployment off the coast of Florida

Four people who went to the International Space Station for six months have come back home. They landed in the ocean near Florida in a special SpaceX spaceship called Crew Dragon.

The crew members of the Crew-6 mission, which is a collaboration between NASA and SpaceX, left the space station on Sunday at 7:05 am ET. The team stayed on the 13-foot-wide Crew Dragon spaceship and moved around in Earth‘s orbit. They were heading towards a landing spot near Jacksonville, Florida. They finally landed there after midnight.

The Crew Dragon capsule was moving very fast, over 17,000 miles per hour. When it started its final descent, the outside of the spacecraft got very hot, reaching about 3,500 degrees Fahrenheit. This happened as it passed through the thickest part of Earth’s atmosphere. Inside the space vehicle, a shield protected the passengers from heat. The temperature should have been comfortable and not gone beyond 100 degrees Fahrenheit (37. 8

The capsule then released sets of parachutes to help it descend more slowly. The rescuers are ready to bring the spacecraft out of the water and onto a special boat called the “Dragon’s nest. ” Once on the boat, they will do some important safety checks before the crew can get off.

NASA said that they were watching the impact Hurricane Idalia had on Florida‘s Gulf Coast before the astronauts left the space station. The big storm hit northern Florida really hard and then went through southern Georgia and into the Carolinas.

The Crew-6 team has four astronauts. They are Stephen Bowen and Warren “Woody” Hoburg from NASA, Sultan Alneyadi from the United Arab Emirates, who is the second astronaut from his country to go to space, and Andrey Fedyaev, a cosmonaut from Russia.

The team spent six months on the space station after going up in March. In the last week, the Crew-6 astronauts helped the Crew-7 team members settle in and take over the work at the space station. The Crew-7 team arrived on August 27.

During their time in space, the Crew-6 astronauts were supposed to supervise over 200 science and technology projects.

“We accomplished many tasks during our mission,” Hoburg said during a virtual news conference with the astronauts on August 23. We had two spaceships from SpaceX called CRS-27 and CRS-28 that came to visit. They brought a lot of scientific stuff with them. And all of us, as a team, went on three spacewalks.

While they were visiting, the Crew-6 astronauts also met with the Axiom Mission 2 crew. This crew consisted of a former NASA astronaut and three passengers who paid to be there. The passengers included an American businessman and two astronauts from Saudi Arabia. The flight was a part of a plan to regularly take tourists and other customers to the International Space Station. NASA wants to have more private businesses operating in the area close to Earth.

“It has been a great experience and very enjoyable,” Hoburg said.

Two people killed as Hurricane Idalia converts Florida mansions into small islands

Hurricane Idalia has caused a lot of damage on the beautiful Gulf Coast of Florida. It has flooded towns near the coast and sadly, two people have lost their lives.

Idalia arrived in Florida around 7. 45am It hit an area in Florida called the Big Bend region, which is a rural and not very crowded place that is also known as Florida’s ‘Nature Coast. ‘

In simple words, the Big Bend area doesn’t usually get directly affected by hurricanes. This made the National Weather Service in Tallahassee describe the storm as something extremely rare and unexpected.

Idalia hit the area of Keaton Beach, which is not officially part of a city, directly. Keaton Beach is about 22 miles south of Perry and 20 miles north of Steinhatchee, a town by the coast.
The town is located where the river meets the sea, and it experienced very bad flooding shortly after the storm came nearby.

At 730am, the Steinhatchee River was 0. 83 feet above its usual height.

By 745am, the height had increased by 2. 49 feet more than usual. Just one hour later, the National Weather Service measured that the water levels were 8. 02 feet above the normal average.

Videos from Steinhatchee show that the flooding was very bad. The flood was so bad that some buildings were surrounded by the rising river water and looked like islands.
The NOAA said the water at Cedar Key was 6. 8 feet higher than usual. The people living there were asked to leave by the government.

Most of the 900 people living on the islands left before the storm came, but a few locals and emergency workers stayed behind.

Videos posted by Cedar Key Fire Rescue show that the streets of the island are completely flooded with water from the sea.

The agency said, “We will need everyone to be patient. ” They said that the tide will keep rising until twelve o’clock in the afternoon. Most of the roads near the city center are covered in water.
Afterwards, the emergency workers said that propane tanks were exploding all over the island while the storm was happening.

They told us not to go to Cedar Key.

The police in Florida announced that two people have died because of the bad weather.

The first person died in Gainesville at around 6:00am on Wednesday morning. While driving in very heavy rain, a driver went off the road and hit the trees.

There was another death in Pasco County, near the Big Bend. The driver was going too fast and crashed into a tree after sliding off the road.

FBI detains man,67, for ‘trying to steal bank of $650 to pay rent’

A man was detained after reportedly attempting to steal a bank of $650 in order to pay his rent and stay off the streets.

According to a federal complaint that was released on Monday, the FBI detained Michael Noojin, 67, when he attempted to rob a Bank of America in Hollywood, Florida, of the money.

Noojin stood in queue to see a teller while donning a yellow polo shirt with sailboats and birds printed all over it, blue jeans, white sneakers and sunglasses.

Noojin waited as the teller promised to help him in a moment.

According to the complaint, when Noojin approached the teller and she asked for his debit card, he responded by saying that he had a gun and instructed her to put all the money in a bag.

At that moment, Noojin put a brown plastic bag under the glass in front of the teller.

Noojin said, “I’m serious, I have a gun. Please put the money in the bag. ”

According to the complaint, the person who was working at the counter did not see a gun and began to lock her drawer with money.

Two more people who heard what happened started locking their cash drawers and a loud alarm went off to get help quickly.

As the bank employees started to move away because they were scared, Noojin quickly took a bag from under a protective glass and ran out of the bank through an emergency exit in a direction that nobody knows.

In the afternoon of August 24, someone noticed Noojin from pictures of the bank robbery on the news. They then told the police where he was living in a halfway house in Hallandale Beach.

In the evening, police talked to Noojin at the halfway house and he admitted to stealing money from the bank.

The complaint says that Noojin said he robbed the bank because he needed money to pay his rent and he was very desperate.

‘He only had one more opportunity to get $650. 00 before he would become homeless. ’

Noojin has been accused of trying to steal money from a bank employee using intimidation. The money belonged to the bank and was in their control.

He is in FBI custody because the bank is insured by the FDIC. Noojin has to go to a court in Fort Lauderdale that is run by the government.

Hurricane Idalia’s storm surge might reach 16 feet as it makes landfall

Hurricane Idalia has hit the shores of Florida’s Gulf Coast as a very destructive Category 3 storm.

Idalia hit the mainland United States around 7. 45am on Wednesday, after getting stronger in the Gulf of Mexico for a few days.

The storm hit the Keaton Beach, Florida area, according to the National Weather Service.

The National Hurricane Center said that dangerous winds that can cause harm to people’s lives will happen when the center of Hurricane Idalia reaches the coast in the Big Bend area of Florida.

They also said there would be big waves and floods that could go up to 16 feet above the ground level.

Florida Governor Ron DeSant is said that if a storm surge reaches around 16 feet, it is highly unlikely that people will be able to survive. ‘You should be in a building with three floors because it is going to go up very, very high. ’

Idalia is moving slowly towards the north and is expected to bring strong rain and damaging winds to southern Georgia.

A Category 3 hurricane, according to the Saffir-Simpson Scale, can maintain winds of 111 to 129 miles per hour.

Idalia grew stronger overnight, briefly reaching Category 4 status before being lowered once more at 7 o’clock in the morning.

The Big Bend area of the Gulf Coast, where storms often don’t get ashore, was directly impacted by the storm.

The National Weather Service station in Tallahassee stated Wednesday that no major hurricanes had ever passed across the Apalachee Bay in recorded history. “DO NOT attempt to compare this storm to others. Nobody has ever seen this.

Hurricane Idalia makes landfall in Florida to heavy winds and rain.

Orders were given to leave in 22 counties in the area, which included everyone who lives in Cedar Key, an island by Levy County.

Later in the morning on Wednesday, they gave a serious warning to the small number of people who remained on the island: “There are exploding propane tanks scattered all over the island. ” Don’t drive and don’t go outside. “We are currently unable to reach them. ”

The photos and videos taken in the area that was directly hit by a disaster show that the power lines have fallen down, the streets are covered with water, and homes are underwater.

  • Powerful hurricane expected to hit Florida – NHC

Powerful hurricane expected to hit Florida – NHC

Florida and Cuba are bracing themselves for an imminent and high-risk hurricane, Tropical Storm Idalia, which is projected to escalate into a Category 3 hurricane.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) said that Idalia is going to become a strong hurricane before it reaches Big Bend, Florida, on Wednesday.

Another big storm named Franklin might cause dangerous flooding on the East Coast of the United States and in Bermuda.

As the time when hurricanes are most active in the Atlantic Ocean approaches.

Franklin is the first powerful storm of the season, which happens between June and November. Right now, the storm is a Category 4, with very strong winds of 145mph (230km/h). However, according to the NHC, it will become less powerful by Tuesday afternoon.

In an announcement on Monday afternoon, the agency stated that Franklin was already creating very dangerous waves and strong currents along the south-eastern coast of the US.

Right now, Florida is mainly concerned about Idalia. Governor Ron DeSantis has alerted the state to be ready for significant problems caused by this storm.

“This hurricane is going to be very strong,” he said at a meeting with reporters on Monday.

“This will definitely affect Florida in numerous ways. ”

President Joe Biden gave permission for an emergency declaration to help the state prepare for the upcoming storm.

At 8:00 PM EDT on Monday (01:00 AM GMT on Tuesday), the NHC reported that Idalia is moving in a northerly direction at a speed of 8 miles per hour. It also mentioned that the maximum sustained winds of Idalia are 70 miles per hour.

A storm becomes a hurricane when its winds reach a speed of 74mph or higher.

According to the NHC, a storm named Idalia might cause dangerous waves and strong winds in certain areas of the west coast of Florida and the Florida Panhandle starting from Tuesday. Additionally, there may be sudden floods in some urban areas.

The storm will bring heavy rain and cause flooding in western Cuba. There is a warning for a hurricane coming to Pinar del Río in Cuba.

On Monday evening, Idalia was about 20 miles (or 30 kilometers) to the west of Cuba. It made lots of Cubans leave their homes in towns on the west side of the island.

People have made their homes safe and secured their fishing boats due to strong winds and warnings of storm surge. On Monday afternoon, the small fishing village of Guanimar, which is located south of Havana, was filled with dirty brown water from a flood.
The little fishing village of Guanimar is covered in water from a flood.

“We have already had rain for two days,” said Yadira Alvarez, a 34-year-old woman who is getting ready to evacuate with her five children, told Reuters news agency. We attempt to get ready, but regardless of our efforts, everything will end up wet.

Some towns in north-western Florida are expected to have very high waves, called storm surges, that could reach up to 11 feet or 3. 3 meters

“The NHC stated that the strongest water will be found closest to the shore in places where winds blow from the sea. This water will come with big and hazardous waves. ”

Tampa International Airport will shut down starting at midnight on Monday to get ready for the storm.

The governor of Florida has said that there is a big problem in 46 counties in the northern part of the state, so he is declaring a state of emergency.

Mr DeSantis stated that a few counties on the Gulf Coast will have to leave their homes due to Idalia, and schools will be shut down as well.

He told people living near the coast in Florida to go to higher places.

“He said that people from Florida should start carrying out their plans immediately. ”

The governor said that over 1,100 National Guardsmen have been called to duty along with 2,400 vehicles specifically designed to drive through high water and other equipment used for rescuing people.

Officials have gotten ready 400,000 gallons of fuel to be delivered to gas stations along the routes people use to evacuate, according to Mr.

Government officials also said that a lot of people in the area will not have electricity due to the storm.

Forecasters said that the states of Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina may experience a lot of rain.

Tropical storm Idalia arrived less than a year after Hurricane Ian hit Florida’s west coast and caused the deaths of more than 100 people.

We are not completely sure how climate change affects how often tropical storms happen, but we know that warmer ocean temperatures heat up the air above and provide more energy for hurricanes to form and intensify. Because of this, they are likely to become stronger and have heavier rain.

A 21-year-old named Ryan Christopher Palmeter shot 11 times at a woman sitting in her car in Jacksonville. Then, he went into a store and shot two more people.

Sheriff T K Waters said that he then shot himself with the gun.

Mayor Donna Deegan said that the attack happened because the person didn’t like people from different races and had strong hate towards them.

During a press conference on Sunday, Sheriff Waters said that the person who shot others did not have a criminal record before and had been living with their parents in Clay County.

The three people who were hurt are named Anolt Laguerre Jr, who is 19 years old, Jerrald De’Shaun Gallion, who is 29 years old, and Angela Carr, who is 52 years old.

Mr Laguerre was employed at Dollar General, the store where the attack occurred, according to the company.

According to the police, he wrote messages expressing his strong dislike for black people.

In simple words, Sheriff Waters said that this shooting happened because the person who did it hated black people and had a strong racial bias.

He was aware of what he was doing. “He was completely clear and aware,” he said.

Mr Waters said that the person who was carrying a gun was kept in custody for 72 hours in 2017 because of the Baker Act. This law allows someone to be held against their will for treatment of mental health issues.

However, the sheriff explained that the guns that the killer used were obtained legally, and he believed that the issue was not the accessibility of guns, but rather the fact that the killer was a bad person.

He told people not to try to understand a violent act that doesn’t make sense.

The police in Jacksonville showed a video at the news conference. The video showed the attacker going up to a car and killing the first woman. Then the video showed him going into the shop.

Mr Waters also said that the person with the gun allowed some people to leave the store without hurting them.

Why I’m not sure. “He said that some of them were white, but he also thinks that there were a few that were not. ”

On Sunday, US Attorney General Merrick Garland stated that the Justice Department is looking into this attack as both a hate crime and an act of violent extremism driven by racial motivations.

“He said that nobody in this country should have to be scared of violent acts driven by hate, and no family should have to be sad and mourn the death of someone they love due to prejudice and hate. ”

The attack took place very close to Edwards Waters University, which has a history of serving black students.

The person with a gun went to the university. A security officer asked him to tell his name, the university said. When he said no, they told him to go away.

The person went back to their car and left the school without any problems, the statement said.

Sheriff Waters said the person with the gun was then spotted putting on a special vest and mask to protect themselves before leaving the school grounds.

The university had to close and keep everyone inside because of the shooting.

Three black persons killed by racist gunman in Florida

A person with a gun hurt and killed three black people because of their race in Jacksonville, Florida and afterwards, took their own life. The city’s sheriff shared this information.

The man, who was described as being white and in his early 20s, went into a Dollar General store and started shooting, which caused a situation where he was trapped by the police.

Sheriff T K Waters said the gunman, who was wearing protective clothing, killed two men and a woman and also left behind written explanations.

Mayor Donna Deegan said it was a crime filled with hate, caused by racism.

The sheriff said the person who shot – whose name has not been officially announced yet – had a light and easy-to-use rifle and a handgun.

People think he did it by himself and supposedly wanted to kill himself. He stayed in Clay County in Jacksonville with his parents and left multiple notes about his plans, according to Sheriff Waters. This included a message to his parents and another one to the media. The police officer said that one of the guns had a symbol called a swastika drawn on it.

The FBI is looking into the shooting as a potential hate crime and investigating whether civil rights were violated.

The attack occurred very close to Edwards Waters University, which is a historically black college.

Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan expressed to a local TV station called WJXT that even one shooting is unacceptable, but multiple mass shootings are extremely difficult to cope with.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis called the person who fired the gun a “terrible person” and described the shooting as very terrible.

“According to Mr. DeSantis, who is running for the Republican party’s presidential candidate, it is completely unacceptable that the gunman was choosing his victims based on their race. ”

This person chose to end his own life instead of facing the consequences and admitting his mistakes, which is considered a cowardly decision.

The White House said that President Joe Biden was informed about the shooting.

Dollar General is very sad and upset about the violent incident that happened at our store on Kings Road. We want to help and support our employees in Jacksonville who were affected by this tragedy, and we are working closely with the police to handle the situation.

According to the Gun Violence Archive website, more than 28,000 people have been killed by guns in the US this year.

The attack in Jacksonville happened on the same day as the 60th anniversary of the March on Washington and Martin Luther King Jr. ‘s well-known “I have a dream” speech. Tens of thousands of individuals came together in the capital on Saturday to celebrate a significant achievement in the fight for equal rights.

Biden shares inspiring tale of insulin’s invention

President Joe Biden addressed a room filled with supporters in Hallandale Beach, Florida, on Tuesday, emphasizing the importance of accessible healthcare.

During his speech, he shared a meaningful anecdote about his conversation with the person credited with “inventing” insulin, revealing that this life-saving treatment was never patented intentionally, so it could be accessible to all.

To illustrate the administration’s commitment to affordable healthcare, Biden mentioned the Inflation Reduction Act, highlighting its potential benefits for individuals on Social Security and Medicare.

One significant aspect of this act is capping the cost of insulin at a mere $35, ensuring that this vital diabetes treatment remains affordable for everyone.

In an effort to connect with the audience, the President asked them if they knew anyone with diabetes who relies on insulin.

He further emphasized the significance of the medication, explaining that its creator deliberately chose not to patent it, prioritizing its availability for the well-being of all individuals who need it.

The heartwarming touch of Biden sharing his personal conversation with this innovator made the message even more resonant with the crowd.

Police handcuff 11-year-old girl over prank kidnapping

Following her false claim that her friend had been abducted, an 11-year-old girl was detained.

The young girl contacted police, reporting that her 14-year-old friend had been taken by “an armed male driving a white van” in Florida, USA.

At roughly 9.45 a.m. local time, she claimed to be following the van in a blue Jeep while sending the message.

According to ABC7, her false alert prompted a massive police search operation for the vehicle, involving the activation of numerous units and air backup.

The youngster texted updates for the next hour and a half, including a description of the male suspect and the fact that he was carrying a gun, according to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office.

However, when no suspect was located, police located the original location of the phone used to send the texts.

At 10:23 a.m., it led them to a house in Poppy Lane, Port Orange, where police approached her father, who said she was there with her family.

Upon leading police on a 90-minute spoof kidnapping case, an 11-year-old girl is placed in handcuffs.

The teenager was walking out to meet the deputies while clutching her cell phone, which was ringing, according to the police.

“Volusia Sheriff’s Dispatch was on the line when the call was answered, and deputies confirmed they were on the scene.”

According to reports, the youngster informed deputies that she got the idea to prank 911 from a YouTube challenge and carried it out because she “thought it would be funny.”

She can hear an officer instructing her to “stay calm” and “talk to your parents” on bodycam video of her arrest.

“We can open the window so you can speak with them,” someone said. You won’t experience anything. Do you comprehend that?”

Before her father says, “I’m telling you this right now, you’re going to take this as a lesson at 11 years old, that if you do something stupid in the future, you’re going to enjoy those cuffs,” she nods her head to indicate that she agrees.

I’m not going to do this again, the girl answers.

She is then given the chance to convert this into a learning experience, the officer said. Please understand that this is not something you should carry with you forever.

Body parts discovered in three different bags by police in Florida

After an unidentified woman’s body was discovered in three different suitcases and thrown in a canal, police in Florida are looking for answers.

The victim was discovered last week in the Intracoastal Waterway in Delray Beach, a network of canals that extends parallel to the town’s coastline.

Last Friday, when a resident saw a suitcase floating in the canal with what appeared to be a body part hanging out, they called the police.

Delray Beach Police Chief Russ Mager stated at a press conference that “within a few hours of this particular call, we received two other calls regarding other suitcases that were floating just south of this location.”

Investigators found human remains in the other two luggage as well, and they quickly realised that all three belonged to the same person.

The victim’s identity is still unknown. She was about 5’4″ tall and had brown hair. Detectives think she was either Caucasian or Latin American, and between the ages of 35 and 55.

We suspect the victim was placed in the water between Monday, July 17 and the early hours of Thursday, July 20, based on her condition. stated Sgt. Casey Kelly.

The luggage also held some of her apparel, including a floral top, a black shirt, and some black shorts. Her top’s manufacturer was identified as Betzabe, which investigators suspect to be a Brazilian company.

Police refused to disclose how they thought the person was killed because it was “sensitive case information.”

In order to identify the suspect and find out more details about the incident, investigators are seeking for the public’s assistance. Locals are currently being asked to search the video from their own security cameras.

“We request that you look out for any unusual vehicles or people, especially anyone moving or carrying luggage,” Added Sgt. Kelly.

Chief Mager continued, “No information is too small.”

Police published photos of two of the suitcases the victim was found in on Thursday.

While the other is green with white polka dots, one suitcase was purple. Pink ribbon seems to be tying the two together.

A photorealistic recreation of the victim’s face and attire was included in the artist’s depiction of the victim that was also made public.

According to the Delray Police, “These reconstructed images are not an exact likeness of the victim or her clothing and are simply the artist’s interpretation.”

  • Messi arrives in Florida ahead of Inter Miami move

Messi arrives in Florida ahead of Inter Miami move

Seven time Ballon d’Or winner, Lionel Messi, arrived in Florida on Tuesday to complete his transfer to Inter Miami of the US Major League Soccer.

Messi was captured on camera by ESPN television exiting a private plane at a small executive airport close to the Inter Miami stadium in Fort Lauderdale.

Early in the morning, supporters had started to assemble at the stadium in expectation of his arrival.

Before being introduced to the crowd at a stadium event on Sunday, the World Cup winner is anticipated to sign a two and a half year contract, which is said to be worth $60 million annually.

Messi is the biggest name player to ever move to MLS and the most famous to head to the United States since Brazilian great Pele signed for the New York Cosmos in 1975.

MLS hope that Messi will massively increase the profile of the league and boost subscriptions to their streaming broadcast deal with Apple TV. Ticket prices for games likely to involve Messi have already sky-rocketed.

His arrival will also add to the momentum around the sport ahead of the 2026 World Cup which will be hosted by the United States along with Canada and Mexico.

He is expected to be joined at the club by former Barcelona team-mate Spanish midfielder Sergio Busquets, while ex-Argentina and Barcelona coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino recently took over as coach.

Miami owner Jorge Mas has suggested Messi and Busquets could be part of “three to five” new signings for the South Florida club in the current transfer window.

Another former Barca player, Spanish full-back Jordi Alba, has also been strongly linked with a move to the team, which is co-owned by former England and Manchester United star David Beckham.

Messi is expected to make his debut for his new club in the July 21 Leagues Cup match against Mexican club Cruz Azul.

Miami are currently bottom of MLS’s Eastern Conference with just five wins from 21 games and are ranked 28th out of the 29 teams in the league.

But the club are in the semi-finals of the U.S. Open Cup where they have been drawn against league-leaders FC Cincinnati.

The seven-times Ballon d’Or winner has spent the last two seasons at Paris Saint-Germain, after moving from Barcelona in 2021, where he spent the majority of his career.

During his time with Barca, Messi won ten Spanish league titles, seven Copa del Rey (Spanish Cup) titles and four Champions League winners medals.

He scored twice for Argentina in the World Cup final which they won on penalties in Doha in December, after the game ended 3-3 after extra-time and raised the trophy as captain.

Messi also won an Olympic gold medal with Argentina in 2008 and the Copa America in 2001.

  • Beachgoers escape in panic as large shark approaches them off coast of Florida

Beachgoers escape in panic as large shark approaches them off coast of Florida

Huge shark seen circling menacingly in shallow seas off Florida coast drove terrified beachgoers swimming for their lives.

Beachgoers enjoying a day on the sand were forced to leave after a massive shark fin was observed flapping and thrashing in the open waters, evoking scenes from the movie Jaws.

Dramatic video of the incident shows a swimmer relaxing in the water on an inflatable when two individuals nearby escape in horror, with frantic cries of “shark!” being yelled out to warn anyone who might not have seen the impending danger.

But unlike in the film where the predatory Great White sneaks up on swimmers without any warning, the shark appeared to be extremely active and agitated, thrashing around and creating quite a splash.

The shark was spotted at 2.15pm on Sunday afternoon in Perdido Key, and was moving at such speeds that it appeared to be creating waves all on its own.

Experts believe the creature to be a Hammerhead or Thresher shark, which are often spotted in the area, and that it was likely foraging for food due to the large amount of bait fish which were previously sighted in the waters.

Kennady Brinley, a marine biologist with Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge, said shark sightings are much higher in June than any month out of the year.

She said it’s no surprise the animals are still being spotted near shore at the start of July.

Earlier in the week, a school of Hammerhead sharks were spotted circling in a nearby dock, much to the surprise of some local boaters.

Marine biologists suggest avoiding swimming in the ocean before dawn and after dusk when sharks are often looking to feed.

‘This is the time when sharks become more active. They actually feed more commonly, generally, during these twilight hours of both dawn and dusk. And why is that? Because they have sort of the advantage on their prey’, explained ocean biologist Bob Hueter to WINK.

  • Teenager sentenced to life in prison for stabbing a classmate 114 times

Teenager sentenced to life in prison for stabbing a classmate 114 times

A boy from Florida has been given a life sentence for stabbing his classmate to death 114 times.

About two years after he was accused of the horrific murder of his classmate and neighbour, Aiden Fucci, 16, was sentenced at the St. Johns County Courthouse in St. Augustine, Florida.

Judge Lee R. Brown delivered his sentence and stated, “It was performed in a cold, planned, and intentional manner – without any pretence of moral or legal justification.”
And it was abominable, horrifying, and cruel.

On Mother’s Day in 2021, the family of 13-year-old Tristyn Bailey reported her missing from her home in North Florida.

    Aiden Fucci

After a daylong search, Bailey’s body was found abandoned by another neighbor walking in the nearby woods around 6.00pm.

Her death was ruled a homicide by sharp force trauma. Bailey sustained 114 stab wounds, including 49 defensive wounds to her hands, arms, and head.

Investigators eventually identified Bailey’s neighbor Aiden Fucci, then 14, as the lone suspect in the gruesome case.

Surveillance footage showed the two teenagers walking down a residential street together around 2.00am on the morning of her disappearance. Less than 2 hours later, Fucci was seen running back alone, carrying his shoes.

Fucci was arrested the next day and pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder. His charge was eventually upgraded to first-degree murder due to the severity of the crime.

Earlier this year, Fucci changed his plea to guilty. ‘I just want to say I plead guilty and I’m sorry for the Bailey family and my family,’ the defendant told the judge at a hearing on February 6.

Before the sentencing, family members were given an opportunity to speak.

During her victim impact statement, Bailey’s sister Alexis Bailey filled a jar with 114 stones. ‘One for each of the 114 stab wounds that my sister had to endure,’ Alexis said.

‘Please do not for one second think that he could be rehabilitated at any point,’ the victim’s mother Stacy Bailey said. ‘He is beyond saving.’

Only one person spoke on Fucci’s behalf – his grandmother, Deborah Spiwak. ‘Please don’t take him out of our lives forever,’ she implored the judge. ‘I know there is some good in Aiden.’

Fucci’s mother, Crystal Smith, declined to appear for his sentencing. Later this month, Smith is facing her own trial after being charged with tampering with evidence.

Investigators believe Smith tried to wash blood off of her son’s jeans after killing Bailey. Both her son’s pants and her sink contained traces of blood, her arrest warrant states.

Judge Brown called the case ‘the most difficult and shocking case that this county, St Johns County, has dealt with.’

The judge came to his decision due to the senseless nature of the crime.

‘There was no reason. There was no purpose. It was done for no other reason than to satisfy this defendant’s internal desire to feel what it was like to kill someone,’ Brown said.

He continued: ‘Tristyn Bailey was conscious, she was aware, and she was doing everything she could to fend off this attack,’ he said. ‘She suffered a painful, horrifying death from someone that she trusted.’

‘There is only one appropriate sentence in this case,’ the judge said before confining Fucci to life in a Florida state prison.

Due to his age, Fucci is not eligible for the death penalty in Florida. He will be eligible for review of his sentence in 25 years.

  • Ukraine invites Florida Governor to discuss ‘territorial dispute’ remarks

Ukraine invites Florida Governor to discuss ‘territorial dispute’ remarks

Ukraine has invited Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to visit, after the Republican dismissed the Russian invasion as a “territorial dispute”.

Mr. DeSantis, who is widely expected to run for president in 2024, made his comments in response to questions posed to potential Republican candidates.

According to the former congressman, the country’s “vital national interests” do not include continued US support for Ukraine.

The remark implied that if elected president, he would likely reduce aid.

It also aligned Mr DeSantis with former President Donald Trump, the leading contender for the Republican nomination, who has opposed US support for Kyiv and criticised the Biden administration’s handling of the war.

Their comments show the divide in the Republican Party between isolationists who are sceptical of providing military aid and the establishment party policy of supporting Kyiv.

In his response to a questionnaire by Fox News anchor Tucker Carlson, Mr DeSantis said: “While the US has many vital national interests… becoming further entangled in a territorial dispute between Ukraine and Russia is not one of them.”

The 44-year-old has not officially announced his intention to challenge Mr Trump for the Republican nomination, but has been taking all the necessary steps suggesting he will do so.

When asked the same question on whether US backing for Kyiv was vital for Washington, Mr Trump said: “No, it is for Europe. But not for the United States.”

Ukraine’s foreign ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko criticised Mr DeSantis’s comments and tweeted his invitation to the Republican governor on Tuesday.

“We are sure that as a former military officer deployed to a combat zone, Governor Ron DeSantis knows the difference between a ‘dispute’ and war,” Mr Nikolenko said.

“We invite him to visit Ukraine to get a deeper understanding of Russia’s full-scale invasion and the threats it poses to US interests.”

While studying law at Harvard University, Mr DeSantis was commissioned as an officer in the US Navy and was assigned to its legal arm, the Judge Advocate General’s (JAG) Corps.

His service as a JAG officer included working with detainees held in Guantanamo Bay, as well as an assignment as a legal adviser for elite US Navy Seals deployed to Iraq.

Many Republicans, including the party’s senior leadership in the Senate, have long said defending Ukraine is in the best interests of the US.

South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham said Mr DeSantis’ comments displayed “a misunderstanding of the situation” on the part of the governor.

“This is not a territorial conflict, it’s a war of aggression. To say it doesn’t matter is to say war crimes don’t matter,” Mr Graham said.

Former Vice-President Mike Pence has also called for the US to increase its support.

But there is a vocal wing of the party – mostly in the House of Representatives – that is hesitant about the continuing aid.

Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has supported Ukraine, but recently warned that there “can’t be a blank cheque” for the country given the scale of US debt.

Politicians from both parties in Congress have voted in favour of Western support for Ukraine, approving more than $112bn (£92.47bn) in 2022 alone.

The US is the largest contributor to Ukraine in terms of money spent. It pays for drones, tanks, missiles and other munitions systems, as well as training, logistics and intelligence support.

Humanitarian aid has included food assistance, safe drinking water, medical supplies and other necessities for Ukrainians displaced by the conflict. Financial aid keeps Ukraine’s government operating by paying civil servants, healthcare workers and teachers.

A Journalist and a small girl shot dead and others injured

On Wednesday, when two television reporters were covering a murder in the area of Orlando, Florida, a shooter opened fire, killing one and injuring the other.

In a nearby home, the suspect allegedly shot her mother and killed a nine-year-old girl, according to the authorities.

In the Pine Hills area, three people died: the reporter, a staffer of Orlando TV news, and the child.

Orange County Sheriff John Mina said the journalists had been filming the scene of a homicide investigation.

It was not immediately known why the news crew was targeted.

Keith Melvin Moses, 19, has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with the incident, Mina said.

He is expected to face charges for four shootings, including the one that killed the journalist.

Deputies received reports of two shootings shortly after 4pm.

In one of the incidents, on Hialeah Street, deputies had been investigating another shooting in which a woman in her 20s was killed around 11am.

Deputies also found a Spectrum News 13 journalist and a photographer shot. The photographer was last listed in critical condition.

After shooting the news crew, the suspect is believed to have gone to a home on Harrington Street and shot the nine-year-old girl.

The girl died, and her mother was also shot and is in critical condition.

‘It is with deep sadness that @RTDNA learns of the death of a @MyNews13 journalist in Orlando,’ tweeted Radio Television Digital News Association CEO Dan Shelley.

‘He was 1 of 2 of the station’s journalists shot covering a previous crime in a residential area. Sending thoughts of peace and comfort to their families, friends & the other victims.’

Moses has a ‘lengthy’ criminal history, according to Mina.

The sheriff listed out the charges against Mr Moses, including gun charges, aggravated battery, assault with a deadly weapon, burglary and grand theft charges last night.

He told a press conference: ‘It is unclear if [the suspect] knew if they were news media or not,” Mr Mina said.

‘We’re still trying to work all of that out. That vehicle was almost exactly in the same spot as the vehicle from the homicide this morning. So it’s unclear why exactly they were targeted.

‘I want to acknowledge what a horrible day this has been for our community and our media partners,” Mr Mina said.

‘I work closely with all of you… no one in our community — not a mother, not a 9-year-old, certainly not news professionals — should become the victim of gun violence.’

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre posted a message of condolence on Twitter.

‘Our hearts go out to the family of the journalist killed today and the crew member injured in Orange County, Florida, as well as the whole Spectrum News team,’ she said.

Jair Bolsonaro contemplates visiting Brazil ‘in the coming weeks’

The alleged instigator of a violent election denial movement, the ex-president of Brazil, tells a Florida audience that he plans to soon return home.

Jair Bolsonaro, a former president of Brazil, announced on Saturday that he would be going back to his country “in the coming weeks” after spending more than a month there.

Before the current president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, took office on January 1, Bolsonaro took a flight to Florida. He then applied for a six-month tourist visa to extend his stay in the US.

“There is no place like home… We know Brazil is a fantastic country,” Bolsonaro told a gathering of Brazilians in Boca Raton, a video posted online by broadcaster CNN showed.

“I also want to return to Brazil. I intend to return to Brazil in the coming weeks.”

A swift return to Brazil could pose risks for Bolsonaro, who is accused of instigating a violent election denial movement in his home country.

Brazil’s Supreme Court has agreed to open an investigation into Bolsonaro for allegedly encouraging anti-democratic protests that ended in the storming of government buildings by his supporters in Brasilia.

His plans to return were put into question after his lawyer told the Reuters news agency last month the former president would like to “enjoy being a tourist in the United States for a few months before deciding what his next step will be”.

Still, a US official with knowledge of the situation told Reuters this week officials believe Bolsonaro will return to Brazil after the carnival festival, which ends on February 22.

  • Governor of Florida supports ban on diversity education in state colleges

Governor of Florida supports ban on diversity education in state colleges

Ron DeSantis, a Republican who may run for president in the US, has said that he asserts that diversity initiatives act as a “political filter.”

Florida’s governor, Ron DeSantis, has stated his intention to prevent state colleges from offering programmes on diversity, equity, and inclusion as well as critical race theory (CRT).

The proposal, which is a part of a larger higher education legislative package, was made public by the Republican governor on Tuesday. It is anticipated that the GOP-controlled state House of Representatives will consider it when its regular session starts in March.

DeSantis, a potential Republican presidential candidate in 2024, has harshly criticised DEI initiatives as well as programmes that examine diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), also known as DEI and critical race theory.

Critical race theory is a way of thinking about US history through the lens of racism. Scholars developed it during the 1970s and 1980s in response to what they viewed as a lack of racial progress following the civil rights legislation of the 1960s. It centres on the idea that racism is systemic in the nation’s institutions, which function to maintain the dominance of white people in society.

“I think people want to see true academics, and they want to get rid of some of the political window dressing that seems to accompany all this,” DeSantis said at a news conference in the coastal city of Bradenton.

In a statement, the governor’s office said the proposal “raises the standards of learning and civil discourse of public higher education in Florida” by “prohibiting higher education institutions from using any funding, regardless of source, to support DEI, CRT, and other discriminatory initiatives.”

DeSantis promised “no funding” for such programmes. “I think that that’s very important because it really serves as an ideological filter, a political filter,” he said.

The proposal was expected after the DeSantis administration requested in late December that state colleges submit spending data and other information on programmes related to critical race theory and diversity, equity and inclusion.

The governor is also pushing for education administrators to “realign” courses to provide historically accurate information and not include identity politics. DeSantis’s proposals have not yet been introduced as formal legislation, but the Republican-controlled state house is often eager to carry out his initiatives.

DeSantis and other conservatives have long argued that critical race theory and diversity, equity and inclusion programmes are racially divisive and discriminatory – and are often cited in criticism of what they often call “woke” ideology in education.

Last year, the governor signed legislation dubbed the Stop WOKE Act, which restricts certain race-based conversations and analysis in schools and businesses. The law bars instruction that says members of one race are inherently racist or should feel guilt for past actions committed by others of the same race, among other things.

This month, the DeSantis administration blocked a new Advanced Placement course – an undergraduate-level programme for high-school students – that would focus on African American studies, saying that teaching it in Florida public schools violates state law. He also accused the course of being historically inaccurate.

So far, at least 25 states have considered legislation or other steps to limit how race and racism can be taught, according to an analysis from Education Week. Eight states, all Republican-led, have banned or limited the teaching of critical race theory or similar concepts through laws or administrative actions. The bans largely address what can be taught inside the classroom.

Proponents of diversity programmes and critical race theory have argued they aim to counter institutional racism and teach an accurate version of US history that shows the racism African Americans and other ethnic minorities have faced.

Several Democrats have slammed DeSantis’s plans to interfere in public education. “Nothing says you oppose ideology on college campuses…. like pushing your ideology on college campuses,” Florida house member Anna Eskamani wrote on Twitter on Tuesday.

The governor’s move to block the Advanced Placement course on African American studies also drew outrage last week.

“Ron DeSantis banning AP African American Studies because it ‘lacks educational value’ is unmasked white supremacy,” Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib said in a social media post last week.

“You cannot teach the truth about American history without African American history. Period.”

  • Florida teen allegedly stabbed mom, beat her with frying pan for asking him to clean his room

A Florida teenager is being charged with first-degree attempted murder after authorities claim he stabbed his mother and hit her over the head with a frying pan until the handle broke.

The violent outburst from 17-year-old  Tobias “Toby” Jacob Brewer reportedly happened because his mother was “constantly on his case about cleaning his room,” according to the arrest report obtained by FOX 35 Orlando. Following the attack, Brewer reportedly fled the scene and led authorities on a pursuit before he was eventually arrested and booked into juvenile detention on Nov. 30. Brewer’s girlfriend and another friend were also arrested, according to the report.

Brewer, whose case has been transferred to adult court, later told detectives that he stabbed his mom multiple times with a pocket knife before hitting her in the head with a frying pan “until the handle broke.” He admitted to detectives he was “upset” because of his mom’s nagging.

“The suspect advised that he does not like cleaning his room and was tired of the victim (his mom) constantly harping about it,” the report stated. Brewer added that he stole both of his mom’s car keys and lifted money from her purse “so that he can have money once he left the area.”

Brewer then allegedly called a friend of his and asked him to bring a gun to “shoot the victim,” but the friend, who has autism, instead said he’d bring a knife. The mother is currently listed in critical condition and when asked by authorities who attacked her, she took a breath and allegedly said “Toby did this.”

  • Florida man arrested for allegedly having sex with dog in public

A Georgia man has been arrested after he commented “how about me” on a sheriff’s post detailing the county’s most wanted list.

Per WSBTV, the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office shared a poster with the ten “most wanted” criminals in the county last week, which prompted 40-year-old man Christopher Spaulding to ask, “How about me?” In a comment responding to his question, the social media account for the office replied, “You are correct you have two warrants, we are on the way.”

Later that same day, the office shared a photo of Spaulding showing that he had been arrested. “We appreciate you for your assistance in your capture!” the post announcing his arrest read. “Special thanks to our Fugitive Unit for being active and efficiently apprehending Mr. Spaulding who has 2 warrants for Felony Violation of Probation.” Authorities explained that he was on the list because it’s comprised of criminals facing more severe charges, such as armed robbery or kidnapping.

“Our Top 10 is compiled based off of the severity of the charges only,” reads the post. “By not being on this list does not mean our Fugitive Unit is not looking for you if you have an active warrant.” Spaulding is currently being held on two charges of felony probation violation.

Jail records show that Spaulding was booked in Rockdale County Jail on Dec. 2.

The bizarre arrest comes not long after alleged criminal Charles Dion McDowell’s mugshot went viral due to his noticeably wide neck.

Unlike Spaulding, however, he didn’t effectively remind authorities that he’s a wanted man.

  • Florida police chief steps down after flashing badge to get out of traffic stop

A police chief in Florida has now resigned after being seen in body camera footage flashing her badge to get out of a traffic stop.

The footage in question, per a report from the Associated Press over the weekend, was made public by the Tampa Police Department and shows Chief Mary O’Connor and her husband being stopped in a golf cart by a Pinellas County deputy. At the time, O’Connor’s husband was driving the cart, which did not have a tag.

“I’m the police chief in Tampa,. … I’m hoping that you’ll just let us go tonight,” O’Connor is seen telling the deputy. Later in the clip, O’Connor adds to the deputy, “If you ever need anything, call me. Seriously.”

The incident occurred on Nov. 12, with O’Connor addressing the ensuing criticism in a statement shared at the top of this month.

“In hindsight, I realize how my handling of this matter could be viewed as inappropriate, but that was certainly not my intent,” O’Connor claimed at the time. She was later placed on administrative leave, with the Tampa Police Department saying on Friday that its Professional Standards Bureau was in the process of reviewing the incident.

By Monday, O’Connor had been confirmed to have resigned from her position. Per a press release, Tampa Mayor Jane Castor had “requested and received” O’Connor’s resignation in response to an Internal Affairs investigation.

“It is with great sadness that I submit my resignation from the position of Chief of Police effective immediately,” O’Connor said in her resignation letter.

In a separate statement, Mayor Castor said O’Connor’s behavior was “especially disappointing” due to her not having “lead by example” as expected.

“It is unacceptable for any public employee, and especially the city’s top law enforcement leader, to ask for special treatment because of their position,” Castor said Monday. “Public trust in Tampa’s police department is paramount to our success as a city and community.”

  • Florida deputy shot dead by fellow officer in accidental off-duty incident

A Florida deputy was shot dead over the weekend by his roommate in an accidental off-duty incident, NBC News reports.

Brevard County Sheriff’s Office deputy Austin Walsh, 23, was fatally shot Saturday morning in Palm Bay by fellow deputy Andrew Lawson. According to Sheriff Wayne Ivey, the deadly shooting occurred when Lawson “thinking that the gun was unloaded, jokingly pointed the gun in Austin’s direction and pulled the trigger.”

“Austin and Andrew were the best of friends and Andrew was completely devastated over what happened. Even with that, there is no excuse for this tragic and totally avoidable death,” Ivey said at a Sunday news conference.

He continued, “Folks, this unnecessary and totally avoidable incident not only took the life of an amazing young man and deputy, but it has also forever changed the life of another good young man who made an extremely poor and reckless decision.”

Lawson immediately called 911, but Walsh was dead by the time authorities arrived on the scene. Police say the latter died after sustaining a single gunshot wound.

Lawson was taken into custody on Sunday by agents from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. He faces a manslaughter charge, and is currently being held without bond at the Brevard County Jail.

Walsh joined the sheriff’s office at 18-years-old, following years spent serving as a public safety officer in the department’s Explorers youth program.

  • Mike Pence urges voters to turn out in Georgia, a key state

While Biden was in Florida, former Vice President Mike Pence travelled to Georgia, another crucial battleground state, to campaign for the Republican candidate for governor there.

Pence told supporters at a rally in the Atlanta suburbs last night that Georgia must “lead the way to a great American comeback” by re-electing Governor Brian Kemp.

Kemp is ahead of his Democratic opponent Stacey Abrams in most polls, but that did not stop him or Pence from emphasising the need to get people out in support – whatever the data suggests.

Pence, who was elected alongside Donald Trump in 2016, emphasized what he called Kemp’s credentials as a “champion for the Conservative Agenda”.

After the rally, Pence said: “No one has done more to create jobs, cut taxes, restore sanity to our schools, put criminals behind bars, protect the unborn, secure our elections, and defend our God-given rights enshrined in the United States Constitution.”

  • Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen divorce docs filed, NFL star shares statement

It’s official. Per reports, Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen have come to an agreement focused on their previously reported intention to go their separate ways, with the couple’s formal divorce proceedings taking place in Florida on Friday.

According to a source quoted in a People report, a settlement between the two—who first married in 2009 and share two children together—has been “all worked out.” Per that same source, Brady and Bündchen have settled on a joint custody arrangement.

TMZ also reported on Friday’s docs-filing development. As some might recall, the outlet previously informed the world that Brady and Bündchen were living separately in the wake of the former’s so-called un-retirement. Following an initial report stating docs were expected to be filed on Friday, TMZ shared another one in which it was revealed that Bündchen had indeed filed said docs.

Shortly after the news broke, both Brady and Bündchen shared statements on their much-publicized split to Instagram.

“We arrived at this decision to end our marriage after much consideration,” Brady wrote in his statement. “Doing so is, of course, painful and difficult, like it is for many people who go through the same thing every day around the world.”

In her statement, Bündchen echoed Brady’s own comments about the decision having been an amicable one, as well as reiterated a call for privacy for them both as they move forward with co-parenting.

“The decision to end a marriage is never easy but we have grown apart and while it is, of course, difficult to go through something like this, I feel blessed for the time we had together and only wish the best for Tom always,” she wrote.

  • Florida student allegedly steals $13,500 from grandmother, gives money to classmates

A Florida teen made headlines this week after she allegedly stole thousands of dollars from her grandmother and began distributing the cash to her peers.

According to the Miami Herald, the incident took place at Lake Weir Middle School in Summerfield, where police received multiple reports about a student who was handing out hundreds of dollars to her classmates. Deputies say school officials searched the teen’s backpack and discovered about $2,500 in cash.

The student initially told authorities she had received the money from an unidentified former student who “wanted the money disseminated”; but she later admitted to police she had used a screwdriver to break into her grandmother’s safe and steal about $13,500. According to an arrest affidavit, it’s unclear why the teen stole the cash and proceeded to give it away “in increments of $200, $400 and $700.”

Officials say they had recovered about $700 of the money that was handed out, which means there’s around $10,000 that remains missing. Lake Weir Middle School Principal Jason Jacobs addressed the incident in a message to parents, urging them to return any cash their children may have received from the accused teen.

“If you would speak with your children, and if they have received money from the student, please turn it in to our school resource officers,” he said in a voicemail. “There will be no consequences for turning in the money.”

Authorities say the student is now facing a grand theft charge.

  • Florida woman devastated after husband and two children drown in pool at home

A Florida woman is mourning the tragic loss of her husband and their two children after they drowned in their family pool.

According to WSVN, local officials responded to the family’s Hollywood residence on February 24 after Anne Marie Dolce found her husband, Jean Wisly Fontus, and their two children unresponsive in their family swimming pool.

The deceased minors were identified as five-year-old Emmie and Tyler, 2.

“Just after 3:30, the Hollywood Police Department received a 911 call for a possible drowning. When officers arrived on scene they found 3 people who were unresponsive.  It was an adult and two children,” Hollywood Police Spokeswoman Deanna Bettineschi said, per CBS Miami.

    Related stories

Officers who arrived attempted resuscitating Fontus and his two children by performing CPR and other life-saving techniques. They were later pronounced dead after they were transported to a hospital.

“They were all full of love, it’s the only word I can use to describe it: love,” Dolce told WSVN. “The reality of the situation is what’s really heavy and hard.”

The grieving wife and mother also said it was typical of her husband and kids to take daily afternoon dips in the pool. “They typically play in the yard and the pool, painting activities, they would ride their bikes on the patio or on the sidewalk,” Dolce said.

The tragic incident is being investigated by Hollywood Police. And though officials are yet to establish the circumstances surrounding their deaths, they said they do not believe there was any foul play.

A GoFundMe that was set up by Dolce provided further insight into the incident. “Like any other day, Wes, Emmie and Tyler went for their last swim together in the family’s pool. We imagine that they played in the pool, Emmie and Tyler climbing onto and splashing water at dad as always,” she said.

“At some point, something happened that caused that fun time to come to a sudden end. We may never know how, and we will surely never understand why, but we are comforted in knowing that Dad, Emmie, and Tyler are together in Heaven in the loving hands of God.”

Dolce also shared fond memories of her deceased husband and children. “‘I like your hair. I like your dress. That baby is so cute.’ It’s just the way she spoke and who she was, very loving,” she said about Emmie, adding that her brother Tyler was a usual two-year-old.

“He [Tyler] thought he was some sort of superhero, but he was my superhero,” she said. Dolce also referred to her husband as the life of the party.

“This was a party. It was always a party here. Music was blaring, and everyone was always invited,” she recalled.

The GoFundMe account has so far raised over $50,000, surpassing the $40,000 goal.

  • Parkland shooting: Sentence deliberations by the jury

The jury’s first day of deliberations on the fate of the shooter who killed 17 people in a Florida high school has come to an end.

In October of last year, Nikolas Cruz entered a plea to 17 counts of murder and attempted murder in connection with the incident on February 14th.

The jury will decide whether the 24-year-old should be sentenced to death or life in prison without parole.

The case is the deadliest mass shooting to reach a jury trial in the US.

Broward County Circuit Judge Elizabeth Scherer delivered instructions to the jury on Wednesday morning before they were sequestered for deliberations. Survivors of the shooting were also in court.

She told the 12 jurors that “a human life is at stake”.

On Wednesday afternoon the jurors asked to again see the AR-15 rifle used in the attack. They also want to see one of the ammunition magazines, which had a swastika etched onto its side.

Sheriff’s officials did not want the weapon to be left in the jury room overnight for safety reasons, so the judge said they would take up the matter on Thursday morning.

During the trial, which began in July, prosecutors argued the gunman planned a “systematic massacre” of 14 students and three staff members at Parkland, and that he should be sentenced to death.

They said he had conducted internet research before the attack and posted online comments in which he vowed to show “no mercy”.

“What he wanted to do, what his plan was, and what he did, was to murder children at school and their caretakers,” assistant state attorney Michael Satz said.

The gunman’s defence lawyer Melisa McNeill has argued that her client was brain-damaged in the womb by his mother’s alcohol and substance abuse during pregnancy.

McNeill added a death sentence “would change nothing” and “not bring back” the victims.

The court also heard statements from the families of those who were killed.

The death penalty exists in 27 US states, including Florida. The annual number of executions in the US, however, has fallen over the decades, from 98 in 1999 to just 11 in 2021.

Under Florida state law, prosecutors can seek the death penalty in cases when the accused has been convicted of first-degree murder with aggravating factors – murders that are “especially heinous, atrocious or cruel”, creating “a risk of death to many persons” and “cold, calculated” murders that were premeditated.

In most US criminal cases, a jury decides culpability and the judge decides on the punishment. In this case, however, the jury will decide how the gunman is sentenced.

The jury’s seven men and five women must agree unanimously to recommend the death penalty.

The last person to be executed in Florida was 57-year-old Gary Ray Bowles in 2019. He was put to death for the murder of six men in 1994.

  • Hurricane Ian: Man swims 45 minutes through floodwater to save his aged mother from drowning

In the face of Hurricane Ian, a man swam half a mile through floodwater to save his mother from drowning after she refused to leave her house.

Johnny Lauder’s mother Karen, 86, decided not to leave her house in Naples, Florida before Ian made landfall with 150mph winds on Wednesday.

It had flooded around six inches (15cm) during Hurricane Irma in 2017 – so she assumed water levels would be similar to Ian.

But when the storm hit this week, the water in the house was more than three feet (91cm) deep – eventually reaching up to her chest.

“I could have gone to a shelter, but I didn’t think it’d be that bad,” Mrs Lauder told NBC News.

It was then she sent a distress call.

“She said the water was up to her wheelchair and hitting her belly button,” Mr Lauder said.

At this point, he helped his three children crawl into his son’s attic with the three family pets and dove out of the window to rescue his mother.

    45-minute swim through flooded streets

It took him 45 minutes of swimming against the current through five feet of floodwater – with various vehicles floating by him – to reach Mrs Lauder’s house.

“It was a very rough swim, if you can call it that, and I knew the water was coming up faster and faster,” he said.

“I was aware of the dangers any type of current could take me, I could be hit by debris, but my mom was there and I knew she didn’t have much time.”

But he added: “Who wouldn’t go for their mom?”

Mr Lauder took pictures throughout the journey so he could send them back to his family as proof he was okay.

When he got to the house, he could hear his mother’s screaming.

“It was a sense of terror and relief at the same time,” he said.

“The terror was that I didn’t know if something was falling on her or if she was trapped and hurt. But the relief was knowing that there’s still air in her lungs.”

    Showing signs of hypothermia

As a former rescuer diver and police officer, he could see she was showing signs of hypothermia and had sores on her body, so lifted her on top of a table and wrapped her in sheets while they waited for the water to subside.

After three hours he was able to push her to safety in her wheelchair – with the help of his son.

Mrs Lauder was taken to the hospital after contracting infections, but her son said: “They were treated and she’s warm. She’s in a soft, comfy bed. She’s good.”

Mr Lauder, his eldest son, and his mother have all had their homes destroyed.

His sister-in-law in Miami set up a crowdfunding that has raised more than $17,000 (£15,050) after it emerged the family did not have rental insurance.

“All that can be replaced, life can’t,” Mr Lauder said.

“My mom has changed her tone: she will be evacuating next time. I hope people learn from other’s mistakes and not their own.”

His mother added: “I’m just so glad I’m here today.”

  •  Hurricane Ian: Rivals Biden and DeSantis display unity

In order to tour the hurricane Ian damage, US President Joe Biden and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis temporarily put their political differences aside.

Mr. Biden shook hands with the emerging Republican star after viewing the storm’s devastation from a helicopter, and they exchanged compliments.

At least 108 people were killed by Ian, a category four storm. Mr Biden said Florida’s recovery may take years.

Officials are searching buildings for more victims as crews begin repairs.

The president and the Florida governor have previously clashed over pandemic policies, climate change, abortion, and LGBT issues.

Most recently Mr Biden slammed Mr DeSantis for flying undocumented migrants to the wealthy liberal enclave of Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts.

But on Wednesday the two had only warm words for one another as they focused on hurricane relief during a joint press conference in the city of Fort Myers.

Mr DeSantis, who is widely expected to run for president in 2024, and his wife met Mr Biden and First Lady Jill Biden on a wharf littered with storm debris.

Mr DeSantis thanked the Bidens for coming to Florida and said he had been “very fortunate” to have good coordination with the federal government.

Mr Biden told reporters that Mr DeSantis had done a “good job”, and that “we have very different political philosophies, but we’ve worked hand in glove”.

“What the governor’s done is pretty remarkable,” Mr Biden said, adding that he had “recognised there’s a thing called global warming”.

Mr DeSantis has backed funding to harden Florida’s defences against flooding, but has also argued in the past that global warming is being used as a pretext “to do a bunch of left-wing things”.

Mr Biden said on Wednesday the debate over whether climate change is happening had finally ended.

“More fires have burned in the west and the south-west, burned everything right to the ground, than in the entire state of New Jersey, as much room as that takes up,” the president said.

“The reservoirs out west here are down to almost zero. We’re in a situation where the Colorado River looks more like a stream.”

Meanwhile, Mr DeSantis received praise from another potential White House rival.

At an event in Miami, former President Donald Trump lauded his response to the hurricane, saying: “God bless our governor.”

Mr Trump and his former protege have been circling each other warily ahead of a widely anticipated duel for the 2024 Republican White House nomination.

Over 278,000 homes and businesses in Florida did not have electricity on Wednesday a week after Hurricane Ian made landfall, according to website poweroutage.us.

A temporary road to the hard-hit Pine Island – population 9,000 – opened ahead of schedule. But Sanibel Island is still cut off.

Officials say the death toll from Hurricane Ian may rise as more victims are identified.

The family of a mother of four from Ohio say she died after travelling to Fort Myers to celebrate her 40th birthday.

Nishelle Harris-Miles became trapped in an Airbnb rental as floodwaters in the home pushed her towards the ceiling and a nail pierced her main artery, according to local media.

  • Hurricane Ian: Woman killed by nail on birthday trip to Florida

An Ohio woman, who went on a birthday trip to Florida with three other women, was killed by a nail when Hurricane Ian ravaged a home they were lodging in. According to WHIO-TV, the deceased, identified as Nishelle Harris-Miles, was in Fort Myers with her sister, cousin, and friend when the hurricane tore down the roof of their Airbnb.

The fatal incident happened a week after the deceased mother turned 40. And she had traveled to the city with her three female companions to celebrate her new age.

“We talked to them Tuesday [September 27] and we were actually on the phone with them,” Harris-Miles’ cousin told the news outlet. “We were getting them in good spirits and we were telling them to be safe and all that. And then Wednesday, we just didn’t hear back from them.”

    Related stories

Fort Myers was one of the Florida locations the hurricane severely hit. “Went for peace and came back broken, lost, confused, guilty,” LaQuitta Heard, who went on the trip, said.

In an interview with WLWT, Chanel Maston, who is Harris-Miles’ cousin, also recalled the events leading to the tragic incident.

“We strapped ourselves to each other with a sheet, laid on the mattress. That water came out that floor so fast, so quick. The roof was smashing us,” Maston said. “We tried to kick off the roof and lay on the mattress. It kicked off that roof, so that roof wouldn’t smash us and the roof went, and we went.”

Maston also said they tried contacting authorities for help, but nobody responded. “We started calling people before the water really started rising,” she said. “We called 911. We called 211. We called everybody to get us out of there, and nobody came.”

Maston said a nail fatally pierced her cousin as the roof continued to collapse. “She got trapped under. A nail pierced her main artery,” Maston said. “She just turned 40. Sept. 23, she just turned 40. She died nine days after her birthday.”

Maston also shared fond memories of her cousin, saying that the deceased mother “loved everything.”

    “She loved life,” Maston added.

  • Hurricane Ian: At least 30 killed as survivors liken impact of deadly US storm to an ‘A-bomb’

Damage of tens of billions of pounds has been done, and around 1.7 million homes and businesses are without power. Rescuers are still searching the rubble, so it’s possible that the death toll may grow.

At least 30 people have been killed after one of the most powerful storms ever to strike the US mainland wrought widespread destruction, with the number of dead expected to rise.

Hurricane Ian has caused tens of billions of pounds in damage and left around 1.7 million homes and businesses without power, leaving residents to liken the impact to “an A-bomb”.

In Florida, where the storm made landfall after battering western Cuba, coastal towns were turned into disaster areas and around 10,000 people remain unaccounted for although the authorities believe many are likely to be in shelters or without power.

A general view shows a flooded neighbourhood after Hurricane Ian hits North Port, in Florida
Image:Whole neighbourhoods remain flooded in Florida

Rescuers are continuing to search for survivors among the ruins of flooded homes.

Ian went on to hammer North and South Carolina with winds of 85mph, destroying piers and leading roads to be blocked by flooding and fallen trees.

Although now a post-tropical cyclone and weakening, it was still expected to bring treacherous conditions to parts of the Carolinas, Virginia and West Virginia on Saturday.

The National Hurricane Center said: “The dangerous storm surge, flash flooding, and high wind threat continues.”

While the number of casualties and repair costs remain unclear, the scale of the damage was becoming apparent in Florida.

State governor Ron DeSantis said: “Those older homes that just aren’t as strong built, they got washed into the sea.

“If you are hunkering down in that, that is something that I think would be very difficult to be survivable.”

Meanwhile, insurers are braced for a hit of up to $47bn (£42bn), in what could be the costliest Florida storm since Hurricane Andrew in 1992, according to US property data and analytics company CoreLogic.

US President Joe Biden has approved a disaster declaration, making federal resources available to areas impacted by the storm.

“We’re just beginning to see the scale of that destruction.

“It’s likely to rank among the worst… in the nation’s history,” he said.

Mr Biden also declared an emergency in North Carolina on Saturday.

The confirmed dead include 27 victims in Florida, mostly from drowning but also as a result of the storm’s aftermath.

An elderly couple died after their oxygen machines shut off when they lost power, authorities said.

Other victims included a 68-year-old woman swept into the ocean by a wave and a 67-year-old man who fell into rising water inside his home while awaiting rescue.

A 71-year-old man suffered a fatal fall from a rooftop while putting up rain shutters.

Image: Protests have been held in Havana over continuing power cuts following the storm

The authorities have warned the number of dead is likely to rise much higher once more extensive searches were carried out.

Meanwhile, Cubans have staged protests in neighborhoods of Havana still without electricity, days after Hurricane Ian knocked out power to the island, as well as flattening homes and ravaging agricultural fields.

  • A long queue for gas in Estero, Florida

On Friday, there are massive lines of cars waiting to fill up with gas just before 8:00 local time.

We’re in the town of Estero, about 15 miles east of Fort Myers, in a sizable retail center with just one gas station.

Dozens of cars are approaching the gas station from each end – all barely moving. We’ve seen similar scenes at two other stations as we approach Fort Myers.

Sixty-year-old Dean Perfetti – who was waiting to fill up multiple jerry cans – told us he’d already been there over an hour.

Perfetti considers himself lucky: he only had “landscape” damage to his house.

Many of the stores in the complex are still without water. The shortages have prompted Publix – an enormous grocery store – to put yellow caution tape around its washrooms to ward off customers in need of a working toilet.

At a store next door, school textbook vendor Kamal said the storm was by far the worst he’s seen in 10 years living in the area.

“It was crazy,” he said. “Thankfully my house just has cosmetic damage. It could have been a lot worse.”

  • Fort Myers: Eventhough no deaths were recorded, the devastation is too clear

The town’s fire chief says no deaths have been officially reported in the devastated Florida city of Fort Myers.

Speaking to local NPR affiliate 91.3 WLRN early on Friday morning, Chief Tracy McMillion said that while authorities are still working on a detailed damage assessment of the “catastrophic devastation”, it is increasingly clear that Hurricane Ian “totally changed the face of our charming city”.

“Concrete blocks flew more than half a mile,” he said. “Boats are on roads in areas that they shouldn’t even have gotten to.”

McMillion added that coastal parts of the city, as well as the city’s downtown area, have “taken a beating”.

“These are the things that made our city really charming,” he added.

Many local residents remain without power in the town. McMillion said that authorities are currently focused on making sure residents have all the supplies they need and on repairing critical infrastructure.

We’re on our way to Ft Myers now and will be able to bring you some updates from the town shortly.

  • Hurricane Ian: Death toll rises as storm strengthens

A huge search and rescue effort is continuing in Florida in the aftermath of Hurricane Ian, which cut a swathe of destruction across the US state.

At least 10 people have died in the state but officials fear the confirmed toll could rise considerably.

Joe Biden has warned the category one storm could be the deadliest hurricane in Florida’s history, with a “substantial loss of life”.

Ian is now moving inland and heading towards North and South Carolina.

A blackout is still affecting some 2.2 million Florida homes and businesses.

The flood waters have been so severe they have trapped some people in their homes, officials said, with the National Guard going door to door in the city of Orlando to rescue those stranded.

The 10 deaths that have have been confirmed were all in the south-west Charlotte County, which saw intense winds.

Joseph Tiseo, a local commissioner, told the BBC the area had a “tremendous wind event that lasted for 12 hours straight… it was brutal”.

He said said it was not yet clear how many of the deaths were a direct result of the hurricane.

A little further south, Lee County took the brunt of the storm surge.

The state’s Governor Ron DeSantis told a news conference on Thursday evening that the damage in Fort Myers, a harbourside city there, was “almost indescribable”.

“To see a house just sitting in the middle of Estero Bay, literally must have gotten picked up, flown because of the massive wind speed and the storm surge and deposited in a body of water,” he said.

“I would say the most significant damage that I saw was on Ford Myers Beach, some of the homes were wiped out, some of its was just concrete slabs”

One woman who lost her home said the experience is “numbing” and has her feeling “overwhelmed”.

“It’s not my first hurricane but it’s my first total loss,” Karen, who lives on San Carlos Island in Fort Myers told Reuters.

Some residents had to swim out of their homes.

“You have to either swim or drown,” an Orlando woman told CBS News, the BBC’s partner in the US.

A woman in Fort Myers, who swam to safety when her ground floor apartment began to flood, said when she returned home she “had to wait about five minutes for all the floodwaters to come out”.

And at the Sun Seekers mobile home park in North Fort Myers, residents recounted their terror as they tried to protect themselves with blankets.

“It was terrifying, because you’re helpless”, one of the residents, Kim said. “We had no [phone] service to call anyone, but no one would have come anyway.”

At the governor’s briefing, Kevin Guthrie, director at the Florida Division of Emergency Management warned about “indirect deaths” – the fatalities that can happen after a storm system has passed.

He warned homeowners to watch out for power lines mixed in trees and said no one should be tinkering with generators and chainsaws, or climbing ladders without proper training.

“People need to be extremely careful,” Mr Guthrie said.

“If you do not know how to use a chainsaw. If you do not know how to climb a ladder. If you do not know the difference between a cable line and a power line, you should not be doing that.”

Some parts of Naples, a seaside city south of Fort Myers, have been rendered a dark and deserted ghost town, and the city’s iconic pier has been smashed in half.

The BBC’s Bernd Debusmann, who is reporting from Naples, says a concession stand – which just days ago marked the halfway point on the pier – now stands precariously over the water, with splintered pieces of wood hanging off.

About a block from the beachfront, some roads remain impassable and underwater, while others have been left covered in mud as the water slowly recedes.

Hurricane Ian hit Cuba first, causing a total blackout in the country on Tuesday.

Meanwhile in Puerto Rico, the massive clean-up effort continues, after the hurricane hit the Caribbean island last week.

There was also a power blackout there, and ten days on, more than 269,000 households are still without electricity, according to poweroutage.us.

Puerto Rico was already reeling from Hurricane Fiona, a category one storm that hit just days earlier, on September 18.

As Hurricane Ian rolls on and attention moves to Florida, many on the island are worried about being forgotten.

“To the people of Puerto Rico, we have not gone away,” President Biden said on Thursday, speaking at the headquarters of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (Fema) in Washington DC.

“I am committed to you and the recovery of the island, we will stand by you no matter how long it takes to get it done.”

  • After Hurricane Ian: Joe Biden to visit Florida

Following one of the “deadliest” hurricanes to ever hit Florida, the US president has plans to travel there. As the storm travels north, further warnings have been issued.

In the wake of Hurricane Ian, US President Joe Biden announced on Thursday that he is arranging a trip to Florida.

“When the conditions allow it, I’m going to be going to Florida,” the president said.

Biden was speaking at FEMA emergency management headquarters in Washington, which has been organizing the federal response to the disaster that has laid waste to swathes of the southern peninsula state.

“This could be the deadliest hurricane in Florida history,” he said, adding that “The numbers… are still unclear, but we’re hearing reports of what may be a substantial loss of life.”

At least six deaths have been reported, but this number is expected to climb as rescue workers spread across the affected areas.

More than 2.5 million homes and businesses had been left without power by Thursday.

The National Hurricane Centre (NHC) issued a hurricane warning for the coastline of South Carolina, as Ian headed further north with maximum sustained winds of 70 mph (110 km/h).

  • What is a storm surge?

We’ve been talking lots about storm surges today, but not everyone will be familiar with the term.

As a hurricane approaches a coast, the swirling winds force ocean water up onto the land. Atmospheric pressure from the storm will also help squeeze the water ashore.

The National Hurricane Center has said these surges are “often the greatest threat to life and property from a hurricane.”

Water is able to move fast in a surge, sweeping people away, throwing about boats and vehicles, and destroying structures.

It takes six inches of fast-moving water to knock over an adult.

Storm surges can become even more dangerous if they coincide with high tide, and a powerful storm surge can sweep away roads, erode beaches and contaminate land with salt water.

The waters may take a couple of days to fully subside.

Many of the 1,500 people killed during Hurricane Katrina in 2005 lost their lives directly or indirectly due to storm surges.

  • Ian approaches Cat 5 Strength as Floridians Run Away from “Catastrophic Flooding, Life-Threatening Storm Surge”

With maximum winds of 155 mph and as it approaches Florida’s west coast, Hurricane Ian is a devastating Category 4 storm, just shy of the most deadly Category 5 status. Early on Wednesday, the state already began to experience high winds and rain.

Residents made last-minute preparations to board up their homes and businesses.  And miles of cars packed the roads as residents sought to escape ahead of the monster storm.

“We have about 2.5 million Floridians that are currently under some type of an evacuation order,” said Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Saint Petersburg’s mayor issued a warning for those staying behind. “After a certain time when tropical force winds are here, we will not be sending out first responders,” said Mayor Ken Welch.

The storm is forecast to make landfall Wednesday afternoon in the Fort Myers area. Life-threatening conditions are expected, including several feet of storm surge and more than 20 inches of rain in some areas.

“In some areas, there will be catastrophic flooding and life-threatening storm surge,” said DeSantis.

The state is bracing for millions of power outages. Thirty thousand workers are on standby to restore electricity after the storm passes.

Seven thousand National Guard members have been activated under the state of emergency.

“We could be everything from security, to transportation,” said Major General Eifert, head of Florida’s National Guard. “Aviation is a big part if we end up in search and rescue scenarios. So, we’re kind of the Swiss army knife of operations. We can be used for whatever the Dept. of Emergency Management needs us to do.”

CBN’s Operation Blessing team has been pre-staging disaster relief supplies in Ocala, Florida so they can jump into action with aid once the storm passes.

“This is going to be a nasty nasty day, two days,” Gov. DeSantis said early Wednesday. “Do what you need to do to stay safe. If you are where that storm is approaching, you’re already in hazardous conditions. It’s going to get a lot worse very quickly. So please hunker down.”

An odd precursor to Ian’s landfall is signaling just how powerful the storm is – strong enough to suck the water out of Tampa Bay. Meteorologist Greg Dee with WTFS-TV in Tampa shared a video of the phenomenon on Facebook.

Meanwhile, parts of Georgia and South Carolina are preparing for the storm too. Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp has declared a state of emergency, with 500 National Guard troops on standby if needed.

  • The recent footage from the ground

With just over an hour until Hurricane Ian is set to make landfall, terrifying footage is emerging from across Florida.

In Fort Meyers, news footage captured a dangerous storm surge rushing past.

Similar scenes were caught on camera at Sanibel Island.

And in Punta Gorda, trees struggle as the wind howls.

  • Marco Rubio’: This storm is bigger than the state of Florida’

Asked what he was most worried about in an interview with Fox News, he replied: “The water. The flooding.” We talk about storm surges. We talk about flooding,” he said.

“We’re talking about people drowning to death, dying because of water is way too high…”I worry and now we pray for people who didn’t heed the evacuation warnings,” Rubio said.

“This is a massive storm. This storm is bigger than the state of Florida. It’s wider than the peninsula.”

  • ‘Life-threatening’ As Hurricane Ian approaches the Florida coast

The storm has maximum winds of 155 mph as it moves toward Florida’s southwest coast, falling just short of the most severe Category 5 status.

Authorities have issued dire warnings about catastrophic storm surges that might cause the water to rise up to 12 feet or 16 feet above ground in some places.

More than 2.5 million people are under mandatory evacuation orders, although some have chosen not to flee or are unable to.

Residents have rushed to board up their homes and stash precious belongings on upper floors.

Severe winds and rain have already begun to lash the American state’s heavily populated Gulf Coast.

The massive storm is expected to slam into the Gulf Coast somewhere north of Fort Myers and some 125 miles south of Tampa.

Florida governor Ron DeSantis warned at a news conference: “This is the kind of storm surge that is life-threatening.”

“It is a big storm, it is going to kick up a lot of water as it comes in,” he said from Sarasota, a coastal city of 57,000 in the storm’s projected path.
