  • My goal scoring record at Asante Kotoko is strange – Eric Bekoe

Former Asante Kotoko striker, Eric Bekoehas lifted the lid on his goal-scoring record during his short stay with the Porcupine Warriors.

Eric Bekoe joined the Porcupine Warriors from Hearts of Lions in 2007 after making 24 appearances and scoring 20 goals.

“My record is strange because within a season I was the top scorer, best player at the same time, Africa to I got the top scorer, confederation I scored 10 out of 10 and the SWAG too I also received that.”

“And I also got a car for the best player apart from that when they rated the whole world that 2008 I was 25th,” he said on Ernest Brew Smith TV as monitored by footballghana.com

“It is not Africa the whole world I was the 25th top goal scorer. Even all games played for Kumasi Asante Kotoko which were competitive I played 48 matches and I scored 42 goals I was also wearing number 42 on my jersey. I was by grace but with grace, without hard work, you cannot succeed.”

  • Ex-Kotoko star, Bekoe slates ungrateful current players for neglecting him

Ex-Asante Kotoko striker, Eric Bekoe has hit out at some ungrateful current active stars in the game for snubbing him in his retirement.

Bekoe, now head coach of Division Two side Nasawkawman FC, claims he helped quite a number of then-upcoming stars when he was in his prime.

“Most of the current professional footballers are very ungrateful…Most of the players I helped during my heyday have neglected me after becoming professional players,” Bekoe said on Accra-based Hot 93.9FM.

“For now, I will rather make a mechanic my friend than a current professional player because with the mechanic when I go to him and he gives me waakye(food) to eat.

“I know he would give me again the next time I pay him another visit but a current professional footballer would rather screenshot your chats to others simply because you asked him for help – forgetting that you once helped him.”

Bekoe tallied 42 goals in all competitions in 2008 during his exploits with the Porcupine Warriors.

His 17 goals won him the Ghana Premier League top scorer award for the 2007/2008 season.

  • Eric Bekoe explains why Kotoko should snub Champions League offer

Former Asante Kotoko star Eric Bekoe is the latest to advise the club against continental inter-club football next season.

The Porcupine Warriors are set to represent Ghana in the Caf Champions League for the second year running after getting the nod from the Football Association (GFA) Executive Council following the premature termination of the Premier League.

Under normal circumstances, the domestic league winners represent Ghana in the Champions League.

“Kotoko should not accept the opportunity to compete in Africa next season to waste money,” Bekoe, who gained prominence with Kotoko in winning the 2007-08 Premier League title and top scorer award, told Opemsuo FM.

“The club is not well-prepared to get a group stage birth which of course will be a waste of resources.

“The Board and the technical team should work fervently to shape the club before they will resolve to compete in Africa.

“For a team to perform majestically in Africa, it comes with a quality crop of players. This Kotoko team is low quality.”

Kotoko’s campaign in the Champions League in 2019-20 ended disappointingly as they suffered a first-round elimination at the hands of Tunisian fold Etoile du Sahel.

Ashanti Gold are the other beneficiary of the season cancellation as they have been given the green light to represent Ghana in the Caf Confederation Cup.

“Allow them to go and disgrace themselves,” King Faisal president Alhaji Karim Grunsah told Kumasi FM.

“They represented the country during the era of the Normalization Committee but brought nothing better but shame.

“No one can seize them from participating once they have their money but they should be mindful, especially with their gate proceeds [now unavailable]. Some management members capitalize on that to dupe the club.

“Nonetheless, we [Ghana] cannot waste our slot hence they can keep on trying [to make an impression in Africa]. It may be better for them someday.”

Kotoko, 19-time Premier League winners, are eyeing their first continental title since 1983. They last made the group stage of the Champions League in 2006.

The Porcupine Warriors’ best continental campaign in recent times came in the 2004 Confederation Cup where they reached the final and lost to country rivals Hearts of Oak in the penalty shoot-out.

  • Former Asante Kotoko striker Eric Bekoe supports plans to make GPL autonomous

Former Ghana Premier League top scorer, Eric Bekoe has backed the plans by the
Ghana Football Association to make the top-flight league autonomous.

The championship is currently run by the Premier League Management Committee of the FA, who replaced the Premier League Board (PLB) last year.

According to the former Kotoko striker, an autonomous league will help prevent external interference in the league.

“We should welcome the league being autonomous. The league will be managing itself where no one will say taxpayers money will be used in paying players and other stuff,”

He adds that the Coronavirus pandemic could be a blessing in disguise for Ghana football as we can put a lot of things in the right place.

“The Covid-19 has been a blessing in disguise where we can structure things very well were there can be a bill stating every player will be paid below GH5000.00 which will make them stay in this country to attain the needed competition of the league rather than travelling outside.”

According to the former Berekum Chelsea striker, Kotoko didn’t use me like Petrojet as he was injected to play for them on regularly basis.
