When Emirates mistook Yaw Dabo for a child, served him children’s food and crayons

Yaw Dabo, a popular Ghanaian actor, recently shared a humorous incident that occurred during his trio to Europe with Emirates via train.

Due to his small stature, the crew mistook him for a child, leading to a series of amusing mix-ups.

During an interview on Wontumi TV, the actor and businessman recounted how a train attendant mistakenly handed him crayons and a coloring book, assuming he was a child.

Dabo found the case of mistaken identity incredibly funny and couldn’t help but laugh at the situation.

But the hilarity didn’t stop there for Dabo. To add to the amusement, he was served children’s food instead of the usual adult meal.

This was an honest mistake made by the attendant, who promptly apologized once Dabo informed them of the misunderstanding. Taking the entire incident in good spirits, Dabo found the whole situation comical.

As news of Dabo’s story quickly spread across social media, people teased the actor and flooded the comments section with hilarious remarks, adding to the lightheartedness of the situation.

  • 90 Ghanaians return home after Dubai deportation

90 Ghanaians return home after Dubai deportation

About ninety (90) Ghanaians who were deported from Dubai have arrived in Ghana.

The deportees were flown in two batches by Emirates and Ethiopian Airlines and proceeded through the Ghana Immigration Service’s requisite procedures at Kotoka International Airport before being handed over to the National Investigation Bureau (NIB) for further action.

MyNewsGh.com confirmed that most of them through fake recruitment agents travelled to Dubai illegally while others had overstayed their visas.

It is gathered that over 431 such persons are currently in Dubai with a number of them said to be in detention after being promised lucrative jobs by agents who smuggled them into the country only to be faced with a different reality.

Sources at the Ghana Immigration Service revealed to this portal that more deportees are expected in the coming days as the number that has so far arrived in the country is just a fraction of those expected.

It would be recalled that late last year, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration (MFARI) said efforts were underway to evacuate some 431 Ghanaians who had been detained in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Comprising 341 males, 88 females and two children below the age of three, they were lured there by some agents who promised them jobs in Dubai and other cities in the UAE.

They have been detained at Al Tawadi Medical Centre and the Immigration Centre in Dubai, alongside an unspecified number of African migrants who have suffered the same fate.

A statement issued by the MFARI said the government was collaborating with the authorities of the UAE to bring the stranded nationals back home safely.

  • Coronavirus: Emirates set to cut 9,000 jobs

The president of Emirates said the Middle Eastern airline is set to cut as many as 9,000 jobs because of the coronavirus pandemic.

It is the first time the world’s biggest long-haul carrier has disclosed how many jobs will be lost.

Prior to the crisis, Emirates had 60,000 staff.

Sir Tim Clark said the airline had already cut a tenth of its staff but said: “We will probably have to let go of a few more, probably up to 15%.”

The global airline industry has been severely impacted by coronavirus, with activity all but grinding to a halt.

In an interview with the BBC, Sir Tim said Emirates was “not as badly off as others”.

But its current situation marks a steep turnaround in the fortunes of the airline, which he said before the pandemic was “heading for one of our best years ever”.

The job cuts sweeping the wider aviation industry are fuelling concern amongst Emirates staff that things might get worse.

The BBC understands there is growing frustration at what they see as poor communications and transparency from the airline.

At least 700 of the airline’s 4,500 pilots were given redundancy notices this week, which means at least 1,200 have been told their jobs are going since the coronavirus crisis started.

The cuts have been focused on those who fly Airbus planes, rather than Boeing aircraft.

Emirates flies superjumbo Airbus A380s which hold around 500 passengers. Whereas the Boeing 777s it flies hold fewer passengers and are therefore easier to fill during this period of decreased airline travel.

00Thousands of cabin crew have also been told they are no longer needed.
    Further cuts

The International Air Transport Association, which represents 290 airlines, is forecasting that the world’s airlines will lose more than $84bn and one million jobs this year.

This week United Airlines, one of the big three in the US, warned its staff that it may have to cut 36,000 staff because of the huge fall in demand for air travel.

Helane Becker, managing director and senior research analyst at investment firm Cowen said given “the continuing issues surrounding the pandemic” she expects US airlines to cull up to 200,000 of their 750,000 staff this year.

US aviation unions are pushing the federal government to add to the $25bn bailout package it has provided so far.

As part of the conditions for receiving state help, airlines have to protect jobs until the end of September.

But IATA says there are wider benefits in doing so.

A spokesman said the scale of job cuts in the aviation sector “shows the severe economic crisis facing the industry and all who depend on air connectivity”.

Adding that its perfectly understandable that governments have put restrictions in place to try and keep people safe from coronavirus “but this should be done in the full knowledge of the economic and social consequences”.

  • Emirates could take four years to return to normal – Chief

It could take up to four years for Emirates airline’s operations to return “to some degree of normality”, its president said Monday, a day after it announced job cuts over the Coronavirus crisis.

The Middle East’s largest carrier, which has a 100,000-strong staff and a fleet of 270 wide-bodied aircraft, halted operations in late March as part of shutdowns to combat the spread of the pandemic.

Two weeks later, the airline resumed limited passenger operations but focused on repatriation flights as large numbers of the United Arab Emirates’ foreign residents returned to their home countries.

Dubai-based Emirates said on Sunday it was cutting its giant workforce but did not specify the extent of the layoffs.

“This is an action we have to take. We just can’t keep our employees doing nothing for so long. So, we have to let some go, unfortunately,” Emirates president Tim Clark told the Arabian Travel Market virtual conference.

“I think probably by the year 22-23, 23-24, we will see things coming back to some degree of normality and Emirates will be operating its network as it was,” he said.

Clark said that Emirates, which reported a bumper 21 percent rise in annual profits in March, had hoped to resume operations in the second half of May, but conditions did not ease enough to allow it, making it difficult to meet costs.

The long-serving executive, whose retirement flagged for June has been delayed due to the crisis, said that some airlines may disappear in the chaos that has hit the aviation industry.

“I am not optimistic that some of the carriers that are here today, that already have been significantly bailed out, will get through the next few months,” he said, adding that the next six to nine months will be “tough”.

“We have never been in this horrendous situation … It is a huge structural change to our industry.”

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) estimated last week that global airlines will lose $314 billion in 2020 revenues, a 55 percent dive from last year.

Clark said that contractual obligations mean that airlines cannot continue to keep their fleets grounded.

“We must get this business back on its feet as quickly as possible,” said the Emirates boss whose own fleet includes 115 Airbus A-380 super-jumbos.

But he warned the airline industry is in “a very critical and fragile state”, and that the wearing of masks and gloves and sterilization programs in the post-pandemic era will signal “a paradigm change”.

  • Coronavirus: Emirates airline suspends all flights to Ghana

Emirates airline has suspended all its flights from and to Accra from the 21st of March 2020 to the 20th of May 2020 in response to the coronavirus outbreak.

The government of Ghana had written to airline companies to stop flying travellers from countries that have recorded over 200 cases of COVID-19 into Ghana.

Ghana confirmed its 7th case of the virus yesterday [March 17 2020].

The Dubai-based carrier had previously announced that a total of 35 routes would be temporarily cancelled from Tuesday [yesterday] as a result of the novel coronavirus outbreak.

This includes a range of destinations across Asia, the Middle East, Europe and America.

In a statement posted on its website, the airline said it will closely monitor developments in Accra, Ghana, to reinstate its flights to that destination if it becomes necessary.

The firm also advised customers to contact it to change flight destinations at no extra fees.

Coronavirus patients in Ghana getting better Ghana Health Service

The Ghana Health Service says all patients who have tested positive for the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) are getting better.

Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service in an interview on Eyewitness News on Tuesday said the patients are recovering and will be discharged once they are cleared.

He said none of the patients had deteriorated since they were isolated and started receiving treatment.

“They are all doing very well. They are recovering because they are much better than we saw them. When they are fully off, we will let them go home. All of them are better today than they were when we saw them. We have not seen any of them deteriorating. We review them every day so based on the condition, we will discharge them once we see that they have fully recovered and cleared,” he said.
