Drake is set to perform as the main act for all three nights of this year’s Wireless Festival in London. This will be his first time performing in the UK in six years, and he plans to bring a unique set to each night of the event.
The festival, celebrating its 20th anniversary, will take place at Finsbury Park from July 11 to July 13. Other big names performing over the weekend include Burna Boy, PARTYNEXTDOOR, Summer Walker, and Vybz Kartel.
Drake has been in the headlines recently due to his ongoing rap feud with Kendrick Lamar.
Their rivalry, which started over a decade ago, resurfaced last year when Kendrick released a diss track, Not Like Us, which won a Grammy. Drake has since taken legal action over the song.
Coincidentally, Kendrick will be performing in Birmingham just a day before Drake’s Wireless set, keeping the tension alive.
Drake first headlined Wireless in 2012, and organizers say he remains the most requested artist by fans. He recently dropped a collaborative album, Some Sexy Songs 4 U, with PARTYNEXTDOOR, who will also perform on the festival’s opening night alongside Summer Walker.
On Sunday, Afrobeats superstar Burna Boy will make his Wireless debut, and dancehall icon Vybz Kartel is also set to perform after being released from prison last year when his murder conviction was overturned.
While many are excited about Drake’s three-day takeover, others are disappointed that UK artists weren’t given a headlining spot. Some fans feel artists like Dave or J Hus should have been at the top of the bill.
Megaman, a member of UK garage and hip-hop group So Solid Crew, says Wireless should have included a top UK act in its initial lineup announcement. He hopes Drake will bring a UK artist on stage during his performances.
Wireless organizers have promised to reveal more acts soon. Last year’s festival featured Nicki Minaj, 21 Savage, J Hus, and Doja Cat, drawing around 50,000 fans each day.
The festival is set to continue at Finsbury Park until at least 2027 under a five-year deal with Haringey Council.
Tickets go on sale on Wednesday, February 19, at 12:00 GMT.
Toronto, the largest city in Canada, has been severely hit by intense storms, resulting in widespread flooding and significant power outages.
Among the many affected by the flooding is rapper Drake, who posted a video on Instagram showing a portion of his Toronto mansion submerged in water. With a humorous twist, he remarked that the murky flood water “better be espresso martini.”
The relentless storms have caused extensive damage across the city, leaving motorists stranded and disrupting power supply.
The Toronto Police have reported closures of key roads such as the Don Valley Parkway and Lakeshore Boulevard, both of which run along Lake Ontario, due to severe flooding.
Downtown Toronto has also been significantly impacted. Union Station, a major transit hub, is dealing with substantial flooding, while Billy Bishop Airport, located on the Toronto Islands, has had to close its pedestrian tunnel due to the rising waters.
In Peel Region, located west of Toronto, authorities have issued warnings about manhole covers being lifted by the heavy rainfall. Police are urging residents to exercise caution while driving. The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority has issued a flood warning, emphasizing the dangers posed by rising water levels in shorelines, rivers, and streams throughout the Greater Toronto Area.
Environment Canada has issued rainfall warnings for the Greater Toronto Area and much of southern Ontario, as heavy rain and thunderstorms continue to batter the region.
Residents are being advised to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel during this period of severe weather.
Canadian superstar Drake has suffered a $300,000 loss after Canada was defeated 2-0 by Argentina in the Copa America semifinal.
With total odds of 9.60, Drake stood to win an estimated $2.88 million had Canada emerged victorious over the reigning world champions, Argentina.
Drake shared his bet slip on Instagram, playfully captioning it with: “This could get Messi @stake.” This marks Drake’s second betting loss this year, following a $565,000 loss in May when Tyson Fury was defeated by Oleksandr Usyk.
Lionel Messi, an eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, and Manchester City’s Julian Alvarez scored the goals that secured Argentina’s victory at New York’s MetLife Stadium.
Argentina will face the winner of the semifinal clash between Uruguay and Colombia, which will take place on Wednesday, July 10.
The highly anticipated final is set for Sunday, July 14, at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.
Meanwhile, Canada will compete for third place against the loser of the Uruguay vs. Colombia match.
American rapper Kendrick Lamar stirred up his ongoing feud with Drake at a recent pop-out concert held at The Forum in Los Angeles.
The Compton rapper took the opportunity to perform his acclaimed diss tracks ‘Not Like Us’ and ‘Euphoria’, much to the excitement of the audience.
During the event on June 19, 2024, Kendrick Lamar electrified fans with multiple renditions of ‘Not Like Us’, a track that has become a standout in the rivalry between the two artists.
The song, which has garnered significant attention and set streaming records on platforms like Spotify, had the crowd enthusiastically singing along with every word.
Not stopping there, Lamar used his performance of ‘Euphoria’ to deliver a pointed message to Drake.
He cleverly altered the lyrics, exchanging a line to directly address the Canadian rapper about returning a ring reportedly purchased for $1 million.
This move came after Drake had used AI to incorporate verses from iconic figures like 2Pac and Snoop Dogg in his diss track ‘Taylormade Freestyle’, where he criticized Lamar’s place in the legacy of Compton rap legends.
Lamar’s homage to 2Pac was evident throughout the night, with the rapper citing 2Pac as a major influence on his own career.
This influence was showcased when Lamar joined Dr. Dre on stage to perform 2Pac’s classic hit ‘California Love’, adding a layer of depth and significance to the evening’s performances.
The nominations for the prestigious BET Awards have been announced, leaving the Ghanaian music industry notably absent with no artists receiving nominations.
Canadian rapper Drake leads the pack with the highest number of nominations, followed closely by Nicki Minaj.
The awards ceremony will take place on June 30, 2024, at 8 pm ET/PT.

A new saga unfolds in the realm of hip-hop as three titans of the genre Drake, Kendrick Lamar, and J Cole engage in a heated exchange of diss tracks, showcasing their lyrical prowess and competitive spirit.
The feud, which started innocently enough with a compliment on their respective careers, quickly escalated into a war of words, reminiscent of past iconic diss tracks like 2Pac’s Hit ‘Em Up and Jay-Z’s Takeover.
Each rapper brought their unique style to the battlefield:
Drake, the Canadian artist known for his blend of rap and R&B, boasts a string of commercial hits like Hotline Bling and One Dance.
Kendrick Lamar, hailed as one of the best lyricists of his generation, is known for tackling weighty topics in his music, earning him critical acclaim and a Pulitzer Prize.
J Cole, mentored by Jay-Z, has carved his own path with introspective songs, garnering widespread popularity and respect. The feud traces back to a compliment by J Cole in a collaboration with Drake, where they dubbed themselves the “big three” of modern hip-hop.
This seemingly innocent remark lit the fuse for a series of diss tracks and retaliatory verses.
The escalation reached a peak with Kendrick Lamar’s explosive verse in a track by Metro Boomin’ and Future, where he dismantled the notion of a “big three” and asserted his dominance in the game.
Drake and J Cole fired back with their own tracks, each attempting to outdo the other in lyrical jabs and braggadocio.
However, J Cole later regretted his response, acknowledging that it was a misstep driven by the pressure to defend his reputation.
The feud took personal turns as accusations and insults were hurled, including allegations of plastic surgery, parenting skills, and hidden family secrets.
Kanye West even joined in with a diss track aimed at Drake’s record deal and lyrical abilities.
As the feud continues to dominate headlines and music charts, some observers question whether the intense rivalry is overshadowing the artists’ talents and contributions to the genre.
Watch video below of Drake’s diss track to Kendrick:
The estate of Tupac Shakur has taken legal action against Drake for using an AI-generated version of Tupac’s voice in his song “Taylor Made Freestyle.”
According to court documents obtained by Complex, Drake has been served with a cease-and-desist letter by litigator Howard King, giving him 24 hours to remove the track or face legal consequences.
In the letter, the estate expresses disappointment over the unauthorised use of Tupac’s voice, labelling it a violation of Tupac’s publicity and legal rights, as well as an abuse of his legacy.
“The Estate is deeply dismayed and disappointed by your unauthorised use of Tupac’s voice and personality,” the cease-and-desist letter allegedly reads.
“Not only is the record a flagrant violation of Tupac’s publicity and the estate’s legal rights, it is also a blatant abuse of the legacy of one of the greatest hip-hop artists of all time. The Estate would never have given its approval for this use.”
The estate also criticises the use of Tupac’s voice to target Kendrick Lamar, a friend of the estate, in the song.
“The unauthorised, equally dismaying use of Tupac’s voice against Kendrick Lamar, a good friend to the Estate who has given nothing but respect to Tupac and his legacy publicly and privately, compounds the insult,” the letter continues.
Furthermore, the estate argues that the song has caused economic and reputational harm by misleading listeners into thinking Tupac endorses the lyrics.
Drake has been asked to provide details on how the AI-generated voice was created and the individuals or company responsible for its creation.
“If you do not comply, our client has authorized this firm to pursue all of its legal remedies including, but not limited to, an action for violation of … the estate’s copyright, publicity and personality rights and the resulting damages, injunctive relief, and punitive damages and attorneys’ fees,” the letter concludes.
As of now, Drake still has the song available on his Instagram but has not released it on streaming platforms.
The estate is open to informal negotiations if Drake meets their demands; otherwise, they are prepared to pursue legal remedies.
The song also features an AI-generated voice of Snoop Dogg, although Snoop has not announced plans for legal action and has reacted casually to the situation on social media.
Aubrey Drake Graham, known professionally as Drake, a Canadian rapper, singer, songwriter, and actor’s father, Dennis Graham, has been granted entry into Canada for the first time in over 15 years.
Drake expressed his gratitude on Instagram, thanking everyone who assisted in making their reunion possible.
In an interview with The Fader, Dennis reminisced about road trips with Drake from Toronto to Memphis during the summers, starting when Drake was just five years old.
These journeys continued until Drake turned 17, with the last trip standing out as his son took the wheel.
Despite Drake being 37 years old now, his father had been unable to visit him in Canada for the past 15 years, presumably due to legal issues.
Dennis praised Drake’s latest album, “For All the Dogs,” describing it as some of the best music he has heard from his son.
Drake responded with gratitude, saying, “Thanks Dad… I was so happy you loved it.”
Known for his playful antics, Dennis Graham once gifted Drake a comically large bra on stage during the final night of the ‘It’s All a Blur Tour’ in Inglewood.
Drake has been credited with popularizing singing and R&B sensibilities in hip hop artists.
Each of Drake’s albums has topped the US Billboard 200 and Canadian Albums Chart.
Drake released his latest album “For All the Dogs Scary Hours Edition” , a reissue of Canadian rapper Drake’s eighth studio album For All the Dogs (2023).
It was released on November 17, 2023, through OVO Sound and Republic Records.
It contains six tracks and is a continuation of his second and fourth extended plays, Scary Hours (2018) and Scary Hours 2 (2021), with the new tracks being appended to For All the Dogs on digital platforms.
Eight months afterGhanaian musician Obrafour initiated a legal action against Canadian rapper Drake for sampling the remix of his song ‘Oye Ohene,’ the song’s producer, Hammer, has finally addressed the matter.
During an appearance on JOY FM’s Showbiz A-Z with Kwame Dadzie, Hammer responded to concerns raised by another musician, Mantse Aryeequaye, whose voice was used by Drake in the sampled remix.
In the aftermath of the lawsuit, Nii Mantse Aryeequaye contended that he should have been included in the legal proceedings because it was his voice that was sampled.
Hammer, however, offered assurance that if the court ruling favours Obrafour, everyone involved in the song’s production will stand to benefit.
This statement emphasises a collaborative and inclusive approach to the potential outcome of the legal dispute.
“It is everybody on the song against Drake. Obrafour is the only one leading the conversation. So I don’t know what the hullabaloo was about,” he clarified.
Responding to questions about how all contributors were included in the lawsuit, Hammer explained that all who were involved in the song were captured in the suit and Obrafour was leading because he was the owner of the song.
He further revealed that Obrafour had a conversation with all parties involved, including Mantse, before proceeding with the lawsuit.
“We are mentioned in the docket. The publishing of the song has Tina, Tinny, Mantse, me, and Obrafour. Obrafour is the one leading because it’s his song. He owns the copyright.
“He spoke to everybody. I connected to the conference call. We were all on the call. We all agreed, and Obrafour went on with the suit,” Hammer confirmed.
Background
Controversy ensued when Mantse Aryeequaye asserted ownership of the phrase ‘Killer cut, blood’ from the 2003 remix of Obrafour’s ‘Oye Ohene,’ a snippet Drake incorporated into ‘Calling My Name.’
Expressing his intellectual property rights through a series of tweets, Mantse criticised the legal action, emphasising that the lawsuit was solely pursued in Obrafour’s name.
Notwithstanding the ongoing legal dispute, Obrafour is actively pursuing approximately $10 million in damages, along with other related claims. This underscores the financial implications at stake in the lawsuit, heightening the significance of the legal proceedings for all parties involved.
Ladies, if you’ve ever thrown a bra at Drake during one of his concerts, he’s got a unique way of dealing with it.
Rapper Drake recently posted a photo on Instagram where he posed with a collection of bras he’s received from women who threw them at him during his performances. The picture featured over 200 colorful bras, neatly arranged on the ground with Drake standing in front of them, wearing a big smile.
He captioned the image: “Remember when we both forgot who the f*** I was in unison… That wavelength was def a foolish one.”
Hours after uploading the picture, it received over 5,00,000 likes.
A fan commented: “Bruh got a library full of bras.”
Another said: “Mans got more bras than Victoria Secret.”
“Praying for the dude that had to lay these out. They’re organised by size,” said a fan.
A happy fan said: “You won bro.”
Drake made a special request to his fans during one of his concerts last month when his son, Adonis Graham, attended for the first time. He humorously said, “Y’all keep your bras on.”
This isn’t the first time the rapper has mentioned lingerie during his It’s All a Blur Tour. In a July performance in Montreal, Drake playfully remarked that he felt like he was delivering a lackluster show because nobody in the audience was tossing their bras onto the stage.
Drake’s son Adonis had a memorable Take Your Child to Work Day as he witnessed his father perform at the most recent stop of his It is All A Blur Tour.
At the Kia Forum in Inglewood, Drake warned concertgoers not to throw bras onto the stage because his 5-year-old son was there.
“Hey look to be honest with you, I can’t talk about titties tonight and I love you,” Drake told the crowd as seen in a video circulating on social media. “‘Cause my son is at the show for the first time ever.”
“So we are gonna keep it PG tonight, y’all, keep them bras on,” he added.
The woman who threw her bra on stage back in July became a viral celebrity. At that precise moment, Drake saw a 36G-sized bra fall on stage at a Drake concert at the Barclays Centre in Brooklyn, New York.
“36G?” Drake said as he got ahold of the bra. “Locate this woman immediately.”
A few days later, Veronica Correia, a 21-year-old woman, signed a content deal with Playboy.
“I know I can crush it and make meaningful income,” Correia told the New York Post in July. “Other Bunnies are making millions of dollars a year on Playboy, so I couldn’t be more excited to tap into that potential. I will be posting exclusive content for my fans and subscribers that makes me feel confident and beautiful.”
American rapper Drake made headlines as the proud new owner of a rare piece of 2Pac’s jewelry, which fetched a staggering price of over $1 million at a Sotheby’s auction. The remarkable item in question is a gold, ruby, and diamond-encrusted ring that 2Pac himself wore during his last public appearance at the 1996 VMAs.
The coveted ring became a significant piece of music history and memorabilia, which undoubtedly contributed to its remarkable selling price of $1,016,000. The auction garnered immense interest from collectors and fans alike, given the sentimental value attached to the jewelry, given its connection to the late and iconic rapper.
Drake took to Instagram on Friday to share the exciting news with his followers, confirming that he was the successful bidder who secured this valuable piece. In his Instagram Story post, while promoting Travis Scott’s latest album, “Utopia,” Drake proudly showcased a close-up photograph of the ring adorning his finger, symbolizing his ownership of this precious and historical artifact.
The acquisition of 2Pac’s jewelry by Drake is a testament to the lasting impact and influence that the late rapper continues to have on the music industry, even years after his passing. It also underscores the significance of music memorabilia in preserving the legacies of celebrated artists like 2Pac and the enduring passion collectors and enthusiasts have for these pieces of history.
Meanwhile, it appears that Drake references his latest jewellery purchase on his guest verse on Utopia cut “Meltdown,” in which he raps “I pull out a million to stare at this shit.”
Drake will have a difficult time topping his latest purchase, as ‘Pac’s ring is already considered the most valuable hip-hop artefact ever sold at an auction.
The 14-karat yellow gold ring “sits atop a diamond-encrusted gold band is the ‘crown’ itself: a gold circlet studded with the three largest jewels in the entire piece—a central cabochon ruby, flanked by two pavé-cut diamonds,” Sotheby described on its website.
“This one-of-a-kind, custom ring was meticulously designed by Pac and is among the final products of his boundless creative energy — a unique artefact from a period of time that is a testament to his enduring influence on hip-hop,” Cassandra Hatton, Sotheby’s Global Head of Science and Popular Culture, added.
Highlife legend and former Board Chairman of the Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO),Rex Omar, has weighed in on the ongoing legal battle between Ghanaian rapper, Obrafour, and American rapper, Drake, over music sampling.
In a Facebook post, Rex Omar emphasized the importance of the owner of the master tape of the recorded sound having the primary right to sue.
He also noted that the creator of the sampled phrase ‘Killer Cut Blood’ has an interest in the case, but it is within the interest of the owner of the master tape.
Rex Omar further advised all interested parties to stop commenting on the case to avoid potentially jeopardizing the outcome of the suit, especially for Mantse, Hammer, and Obrafour.
He stated that it is better to receive 1% of something than 100% of nothing.
According to Rex Omar, Nii Mantse does not have a recorded or unrecorded song titled ‘Killer Cut’, and the phrase ‘Killer Cut’ is a part of Obrafour’s recorded song called ‘Ohene’.
He added that record label that owns the master tape in this case is called EXECUTION, which should have the primary right to sue and deal with the other interested parties.
The issue of music sampling has sparked a debate on social media after Obrafour sued Drake for allegedly sampling his ‘Oye Ohene’ remix on his track, ‘Calling My Name,’ without permission.
Ghanaian rapper Obrafour‘s copyright lawsuit against Canadian rapper Drake, has taken another twist as another Ghanaian is claiming ownership of the disputed soundbite.
Obrafuor filed a lawsuit in the Southern District of New York in which he is demanding the said amount from Drake over copyright infringement in his 2022 song ‘Calling My Name’ off his ‘Honestly, Nevermind’ album.
However, in a twist of events, the founder of Chalewote Street Arts Festival Mantse Aryeequaye has claimed the very soundbite on the Obrafuor song that was used by the Grammy Award winning rapper.
In a series of tweets, Mantse said he is the owner of the soundbite and not Obrafuor as he claims in his suit.
“Hello @Drake the intellectual property more specifically the ‘KILLER CUT’ sound which was sampled in your song ‘Calling My Name’ belongs to me Mantse Aryeequaye and not to @IamObrafuo,” he wrote.
In subsequent tweets, Mantse stated that he never relinquished the soundbite to Obrafuor even though it was used by the producer of Obrafuor’s ‘Oye Ohene’ (Remix), Hummer of Last 2 fame.
“@Drake Rights to the said ‘KILLER CUT’ sound were never relinquished to @IamObrafuor and was used by Edward Nana Poku Osei aka Hamma, Producer of Obrafuors album on Obrafuor’s song as he did with others.
“@Drake I Mantse Aryeequaye maintain my intellectual property rights and claim over all my artistic works including the ‘Killer Cut’ sound you sampled off ‘Oye Ohene’ remix used on Obrafuor’s album,” he noted.
He went on to state that as the owner of the sound, his lawyers who are pursuing the matter should be consulted before any compensation payment is made as Obrafuor wields no right to make sole demands for compensation.
“@Drake my lawyer Kofi Bentil esq. of Lex Praxis Incorporated kbentil@lexpraxis.net who is pursuing this matter has informed me of a lawsuit against you solely in the name of @IamObrafuor.
. “@Drake This is to confirm I [Mantse Aryeequaye] insist that although @IamObrafuor has interest in the matter, he is not the owner of the right, and cannot assert it, definitely not alone, or make any demands for sole compensation for its use.
“@Drake I wish to convey firmly as owner of the right and request that you consult my lawyer Kofi Bentil kbentil@lexpraxis.net before you take any steps regarding claims for compensation for the use of the intellectual property of Mantse Aryeequaye. You’ve been notified,” he added.
According to court documents of the suit filed by Obrafuor, Drake’s team reached out to Obrafuor for the use of his song ‘Oye Ohene’ remix which features Tinny and although did not respond to the request, Drake still went on with his move.
Canadian rapper Drake has been sued by Ghana’s Hiplife legend, Obrafour over copyright infringement in his 2022 song ‘Calling My Name’ off his ‘Honestly, Nevermind’ album.
The court document, according to 3news.com, revealed that Drake’s team reached out to Obrafour for the use of his song ‘Oye Ohene’ remix which features Tinny and although he denied the request, Drake still went on with his move.
Obrafour, real named Michael Elliot Kwabena Okyere Darko, who through his lawyers filed the case in the Southern District of New York, is seeking “at least $10 million in damages” from Drake.
When news of the lawsuit became public, Ghanaian social media users shared their opinion with a pledge to follow the case which is of interest to many.
Drake with a net worth is 250 million dollars was in November 2022 sued together with 21 Savage having used the Vogue name and trademark without consent in their joint album, “Her Loss”.
Drake has shared his thoughts on a viral clip of an AI-generated version of his voice rapping Ice Spice’s “Munch.”
“This is the final straw AI,” wrote Drizzy in a post on his Instagram Stories alongside a repost of the clip. The original post, as shared by The Shade Room, also highlights the recent report from the Financial Times that Universal Music has asked major streaming services to block companies from training their artificial intelligence using music on their respective platforms.
The post also included AI-generated versions of Rihanna singing Beyoncé’s “Cuff It,” Travis Scott rapping Pop Smoke’s “For the Night,” and Kanye West singing Justin Bieber’s “Love Yourself.”
Image via Instagram
Drake and Ice Spice have a bit of history, as the Canadian rapper was one of the first big stars to show his appreciation for “Munch,” her breakthrough song. He later unfollowed her on Instagram, for whatever reason, and fans speculated that he dissed her on his song “BackOutsideBoyz.” Whatever was going on between them, he’s since refollowed her on Instagram.
Drizzy’s post also comes not long after Nicki Minaj hopped on Ice Spice’s “Princess Diana.”
There’s been growing concern over the use of AI to copy people’s voices, and prolific audio engineer and producer Young Guru has repeatedly voiced his issues with the worrying power of AI with fake Jay-Z and Kendrick Lamar verses. Meanwhile, Google has developed a project entitled MusLM, which can generate music from a description after it has been trained on over 280,000 hours of music. The company has not released the project, due to the obvious risk of copyright issues.
UMG is working to block these AI models from using copyrighted content to train their algorithms without any compensation, which is something that has worried creators both small and big for quite some time.
“We have a moral and commercial responsibility to our artists to work to prevent the unauthorized use of their music and to stop platforms from ingesting content that violates the rights of artists and other creators,” said a UMG spokesperson. “We expect our platform partners will want to prevent their services from being used in ways that harm artists.”
Drake recently showed off his new braided hair, and the hairstyle got people talking.
@DailyLoud shared a clip of the Canadian-born rapper flaunting his owl hair design. While the rapper looked quite pleased as he turned left to right to show off the hair, netizens in the comments were unimpressed.
Despite an owl being the logo of the In My Feelings hitmaker’s fashion label, October’s Very Own (OVO), as reported by Yahoo.com, netizens made fun of Drake’s hair.
@Corterrius_J said:
“Why though? Cause who is will see it and go, oh an owl. Nobody can see the top of his head.”
@OladapoJ shared:
“Is he trying to scare people at night?”
@22SDPrice posted:

Popular Kumawood actor, Yaw Dabo, has been spotted in a behind-the-scenes video shooting a movie with an impressive cast that includes popular actors Ras Nene and John Dumelo.
The video, which surfaced online recently, has garnered a lot of attention on social media, with many people expressing their excitement about the upcoming film.
However, Yaw Dabo’s previous comments about movie watchers have caused some fans to express their disapproval of his involvement in the movie.
In an interview with Saddick Adams, Yaw Dabo referred to people who spend an hour watching movies as “lazy,” a statement that did not sit well with many movie enthusiasts.
Some folks dropped hilarious and sarcastic comments saying they hoped the movie was not up to an hour as they did not want to be seen as lazy. Dabo has since apologized for the statement, but it seems many folks are not ready to forgive him.
Drake has a track record for name-dropping his ex-girlfriends in his music. But it appears the rapper might have some second thoughts about some of those choices.
While chopping it up with Lil Yachty on FUTUREMOODS’s premiere episode of Moody Conversations, Drake hinted that he feels remorseful about naming drop his ex-girlfriends. “I heard it the other night. I think that, and sometimes when I’ve said girls’ names in songs, maybe those are the two things that I look back on, and I’m like, ‘Maybe I coulda done without, like, shitting on people for age or disrupting somebody’s life,’” he said.
“The lyrics are never with ill intent, but I had somebody tell me one time, ‘You know, it’s not necessarily what you’re saying about me, it’s the fact that you said it,’” Drake added.
He then elaborated on a conversation he had with his ex, saying that she said he doesn’t know how his lyrics can impact her life.
“’You don’t know who my boyfriend is at the time, or you don’t know what my family knows or doesn’t know. And if you express any form of discontent for me and call me by name in a song, then all of a sudden I’m left to pick up the pieces of my own life that I’ve tried to build up for myself,’” Drizzy said, mimicking their conversation.
“So I’ve tried my best to stop doing that,” Drake concluded. “But I like to be honest in music too, so that one’s a push and pull.”
Machine Gun Kelly has confirmed that he was electrocuted while performing onstage Friday night in Arizona.
Booked as the headlining act for the Coors Light Birds Nest concert series at Scottsdale’s 2023 Waste Management Phoenix Open, MGK was going about his performance when some sort of static buildup caused the rapper-turned-punk-rocker’s hair to stick straight up toward the sky.
The moment, which was captured by at least one fan in the crowd, circulated social media on Saturday, prompting Machine Gun Kelly to confirm that, yes. he in fact was electrocuted.
MGK reposted the clip on his Instagram Story, as he could barely contain his own surprise at barring witness to the bizarre viral clip. “Yooo,” MGK wrote, “I got electrocuted and my hair stood up.”
TMZ confirms that no medical assistance was needed at the scene, as MGK spent the rest of the night attending Drake’s Super Bowl party with his fiance Megan Fox.
Earlier that day, MGK made sure to thank his fans for selling out the show during such a big weekend.
“I’m playing this PGA golf Birds Nest show tonight, and they’ve been doing it, I think, for like 70, 80 years, or something, and it’s the fastest-selling show they’ve ever had, and you guys did that. That seems to be the theme with all the shows they’ve been announcing lately with us on it,” he said.
“I’m just really, really flattered and honored, because I don’t even post a lot of the stuff, and you guys just find it and spread the word. It makes me really happy and very proud to be with you guys.”
Pusha T, who’s currently capping off one hell of a 2022, says he’s “not interested anymore” when it comes to matters of Drake.
In an interview with C. Vernon Coleman II for XXL’s Winter 2022 issue, King Push spoke on a fairly wide variety of notable topics, including his universally acclaimed It’s Almost Dry album and his sustaining dedication to greatness. The latter resulted in a mention from the interviewer of this year’s Honestly, Nevermind album, which marked a stylistic departure of sorts for Drake.
Asked if fans could ever expect “anything like” that particular Drake record from him, Push offered several variations of “never.” From there, the larger Drake issue—namely the two artists’ much-publicized feud circa 2018—was briefly discussed. As Push himself noted, it’s now been four years since the height of the feud, although one side is still “hurt” by what transpired.
“Every time I hear a subliminal in one of his songs, it just lets me know how deep it hurt him,” he said in the interview, shared on Monday. “Because it’s been four years now. And we still talking about it. He is. I don’t. I’m cool. But every time it’s a subliminal, I’m like, Yes. It burns. It still burns. It lets me know. I love it.”
A follow-up question focused on Drake spurred the aforementioned “not interested” reminder, with Push pointing out what he described as the “contradictory” nature of the possibility of Drake eventually directly dissing him in a song.
“With all of that being said, it’s like I’m not interested anymore. I’m just really not,” he said.
Read the full XXL interview here. Also of note is Pusha T reflecting on the last time he spoke with Ye, as well as reiterating his disappointment with the once-revered artist’s recent examples of anti-Semitism (“It’s wrong. Period.”), and a detailed breakdown of why he feels one can’t argue against It’s Almost Dry as the best rap album of the year.
The album was recently featured in Complex’s Best Albums of 2022 rundown. Also making the cut were releases from Kendrick Lamar, Bad Bunny, 070 Shake, Harry Styles, FKA twigs, Flo Milli, and more.
Earlier this year, Push was among those who took the stage amid ComplexCon festivities in Long Beach, including by way of a Clipse reunion performance. For more highlights from the 2022 edition of ComplexCon, hit this link.
Rapper Drake who is a huge fan of betting could not cash out despite predicting Argentina to win the World Cup final, Drake lost a $1 million wager.
The Toronto rapper placed his bet in the 1×2 market, which doesn’t take into account extra time, as can be seen in the screenshot below, which he posted on his Instagram on Saturday night.
In the build-up to the game, the commercially successful rapper placed an astounding $1 million for Argentina to win the World Cup.
He stood a chance of making a ton of money if Messi and co defeated defending champions France to the title which eventually happened as Messi guided Argentina to their first World Cup victory since 1986, although it came only after a 4-2 penalty shootout.
Kylian Mbappé of France scored a penalty kick in overtime to square the score at 3-3. Simalrly, Drake won $1.4 million in February after investing $1.26 million over three bets on the Los Angeles Rams to defeat the Cincinnati Bengals in the Super Bowl.
Furthermore, he bet $600,000 on Barcelona winning the El Clasico and on Arsenal defeating Leeds United in the Premier League in October. He was not let down by the Gunners, but the Catalan giants were defeated 3-1 by their opponents.
The self-proclaimed “certified love boy” has apparently thought of proposing marriage not once, not twice, but 42 separate times. At least, that’s what he’s claiming with his new jewellery piece.
Drake is either the world’s most hopeless or helpless romantic.
Created with jeweller Alex Moss, Drake’s “Previous Engagements” chain boasts a total of 42 diamonds, each meant to represent a time the rapper considered popping the question.
Moss debuted the impressive diamond necklace on his Instagram this week, describing it as “42 engagement rings, 351.38 carats in diamonds.”
Per the voiceover in the video, each stone was chosen “to only suit perfection” and “for all the times he thought about it, but never did.” But what does that mean exactly?
It’s no secret that Drake loves his diamonds. Three years ago, he purchased a $400,000 diamond-encrusted iPhone case, and earlier this year, he bought a $1,898,000 diamond necklace from Homer, the luxury company founded by Frank Ocean.
Maybe the “Previous Engagements” labelling is just a way for him to justify purchasing a 42-diamond necklace. Even Drake has a budget, right?
In celebration of DJ Khaled’s 47th birthday, Drake blessed DJ Khaled with not one, not two, not three, but four luxury Toto toilets. Khaled showed off the unique gifts via on Saturday, where he also laid out some of the toilet’s most notable features: It has remote control operation, a UV-light cleaning system, an air deodorizer, a bidet function, heated seats, and the Tornado flush system.
“Listen this is not no regular toilet bowl. My brother Drake just bought me and my family about four big toilet bowls,” Khaled said. “This is called a Toto toilet bowl. If you ever been to Drake’s house, his toilet bowls are incredible.”
He continued: “This is called a Toto toilet bowl. I’m not even joking, Drake, we’ve been wanting this. Me and my queen been talking about getting Totos for the whole house … If you’ve ever been to Drake’s house, you know its worth $500 million. It’s not about the money, it’s just about, he went and got the best of the best. He gifted us a few of these Toto toilet bowls … I ain’t try it yet, but I’m hearing there’s some music involved.”
Khaled went on to say he planned the toilets in his en suite bathroom, the guest restroom, the movie room, and the studio; he said the latter toilet will be specifically reserved Drizzy.
“Real talk. This might be the best gift ever,” he said. “… Everybody knows, when you sit down and do the theory, that’s when you meditate and reflect on life. So when you sit down and do the theory, ideas be coming.
Some of my best ideas come from me taking a theory. Now that’s real talk. And I got one now that lights up and it sprays theory and it even makes it smell theory. And it’s like a big theory. Drake we love you, brother.”
Drake and 21 Savage admitted they helped each other with their verses while discussing the collaborative process behind their joint album Her Loss on SiriusXM’s Sound 42.
“I ain’t gon cap, Drakewrote some of my verses on this album,” 21 said. “These facts. I don’t give a fuck what a n***a say, Drake helped me with some of my verses on this album.” Drake added, “By the way, you also helped me with shit too.”
21 Savage previously stated he pushed Drake to be more unfiltered on Her Loss. “You know I’m pointing it out, like when he send me the songs, I’m pointing out what I heard,” 21 said. “I’m tellin’ him like, ‘Yeah n***a, talk that shit.’ You know I’m gassing him. I’m behind him. Whatever he standing on, I’m standing on it too. Say what you feel, n***a.”
Drake went on to release a project filled with subliminal jabs that took aim at Serena Williams’ husband Alexis Ohanian, Ice Spice, and most notably, Megan Thee Stallion.
Lil Yachty, who is credited as a contributor on Her Loss, tried to explain that the controversial line on “Circo Loco” was not about Megan, despite Drake’s unabashed approach on the album.
Last night Drake was courtside at the Toronto Raptors vs. Brooklyn Nets game at Barclays Center in a large fur coat with teddy bears on it. But today, Twitter is loving the fact that TSN announcer Jack Armstrong took an opportunity to don the coat, which was designed by artist Jean-Charles de Castelbajac.
Drake then threw on a headset and joined the broadcast, poking fun at Armstrong at the same time.
“You’re evolving,” Drake joked. “It’s a meme like ‘Listens to Her Loss once.’”
While the moment itself was hilarious, fans’ reactions to the bit were possibly even funnier.
One Twitter user noticed that during their chitchat, the Raptors had failed to score even once.
Another user made a meta meme using a template with Drake in it to poke fun at Armstrong stealing Drake’s coat.
City News Toronto journalist Lindsay Dunn said that Armstrong looked like an “adorable little garden gnome.”
One Twitter user used a gif to hint that Armstrong in Drake’s coatlooked like Will Ferrell’s character in The Other Guys when he recounts a story of how he used to be a pimp in college.
But beyond all the jokes were Raptors fans just happy to have an announcer as charismatic as Armstrong.
The Raptors play again on Sat. Nov. 26 against the Dallas Mavericks. It remains to be seen if Drake will return or if Jack Armstrong still has the coat.
The song has been played 562 million times, counting both audio and video streams, said the Chart Company.
Capaldi celebrated the news by calling himself “the king of streaming”.
“Listen…The Beatles, Drake, Metallica, The Eagles, Michael Jackson, don’t worry guys, no hard feelings, I just had to take this one,” he added.
“Take a step back and let Daddy steer the ship now, OK?”
On beating Sheeran’s record, the Scottish singer said: “Ed’s a man who is like a brother to me, he’s been a mentor, he’s put his arm round me and said, ‘Don’t worry everything’s going to be ok’.
“He’s been nothing but kind and gracious and beautiful, a good friend in an ever-changing industry. So to Ed I say… nice guys finish last. You snooze you lose, kiddo. Keep up!”

The Official Chart Company announced the news to mark its 70th anniversary.
The first chart was compiled by music newspaper the New Musical Express on 14 November, 1952, with Al Martino’s Here In My Heart becoming the first ever number one.

Queen’s Greatest Hits sets new UK sales record
The Top 12 was rather rudimentary, constructed from a survey of 20 record shops by the NME’s advertising manager Percy Dickins, who thought a chart would lure new advertisers to the publication.
Over the next seven decades, the chart became more sophisticated, and now tracks every sale, stream and download that occurs in the UK.
In figures released on Monday, the Official Charts said a total of 4.55 billion singles, 683 billion audio streams and 128 billion video streams have been consumed in the UK since the chart began.
Image caption,Queen’s Greatest Hits is a the UK’s best-selling album
A total of 1,404 songs have reached number one in that period, from The Beatles’ She Loves You and Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody, to Madonna’s Into The Groove and the Spice Girls’ Wannabe.
The current number one is Taylor Swift’s Anti-Hero, which is expected to spend a fourth week in pole position when the latest chart is announced this Friday.
Elton John’s Candle In The Wind is the UK’s biggest-selling single of all time, with 4.94 million copies sold.
A further 178 singles have surpassed one million sales – and the latest to achieve the feat is Taylor Swift’s Shake It Off.
She is the is the first act to reach the milestone in two years. The last was Goo Goo Dolls’ Iris, which hit one million sales in February 2020. The last solo artist to make the list was Frank Sinatra, with My Way, in 2018.
The chart company noted that Shake It Off could be the country’s last million-seller, as downloads and physical sales are now negligible, even for the biggest hits.
Streams now account for 98.6% of the singles market, with the number one single currently averaging 6.82 million streams per week.
To date only three songs have topped 500 million streams – Someone You Loved, Shape Of You and Ed Sheeran’s Perfect.
Seven tracks have achieved 400 million streams, including George Ezra’s Shotgun. The Weeknd’s Blinding Lights and The Killers’ Mr Brightside.
The most streamed music video is Baby Shark by Pinkfong, which has amassed 220 million plays.
Meanwhile, Queen’s Greatest Hits is the UK’s best-selling album of all time, surpassing 7 million copies.
Drake and 21 Savage are being sued by Vogue over the fakemagazine cover the duo used to promote their new album Her Loss, TMZ reports.
Legal docs obtained and viewed by Complex allege the duo misled fans into believing the magazine would drop a special edition.
Condé Nast, which owns Vogue, claims that neither the publication nor it’s Editor-and-Chief Anna Wintour, who Drizzy initially thanked online for approving the fake covers, “have not endorsed” the album “in any way,” and asked both rappers and their teams to remove all promos using the Vogue name.
Condé Nast is asking a judge to cease the duo’s use of the Vogue name immediately and is asking for $4 million in damages.
“Me and my brother on newsstands tomorrow,” Drizzy initially wrote of the Vogue covers on Instagram back in October. “Thanks @voguemagazine and Anna Wintour for the love and support on this historic moment Her Loss Nov 4th.”
Rolling Stone journalist Simon Vozick-Levinson was the first to debunk the claim, tweeting photos of the inside of the magazine, and writing: “A street teamer just handed me a copy of this. it’s not a real magazine – it’s a photoshopped version of Vogue‘s October issue with a bunch of promo art for 21 and Drake’s new album. pretty funny stunt.”
The fake Vogue cover was the first part of an extensive rollout for 21 and Drizzy’s new album, which included a promotional for a fake Tiny Desk concert, and a fraudulent Howard Stern interview, where both rappers spoke about their porn preferences and other obscene topics.
Complex has reached out to Drake’s representative for further comment.
Following a cycle of fake promotional stunts, Drake and 21 Savage gifted fans with their much-anticipated joint album, Her Loss.
As with previous Drake efforts, this project immediately caused a stir on social media, but not necessarily for the right reasons.
Since the album’s release on Friday, Drake has faced mounting backlash over “Circo Loco,” a Boi-1da- and Tay Keith- produced cut that has been called confusing, petty, and down right misogynistic.
The controversy stems from the track’s opening verse, in which Drake appears to reference Megan Thee Stallion and her 2020 shooting incident involving Tory Lanez.
The lyrics have ignited a debate about Drake’s intentions, and have prompted responses from fans and entertainment figures, including Megan.
Lil Yachty took to Instagram live on Friday night to talk about “Circo Loco,” which has become undoubtedly the most controversial song off Her Loss, the new joint release from Drake and 21 Savage.
“I know he’s not going to address it, because I know Drake,” Lil Yachty, who has a writing credit on the track, said. “It’s not about Megan it’s about women lying about their butt shots saying it’s real when it’s fake.”
Yachty also has production credits on the project including “BackOutsideBoyz” and the Travis Scott-featured “Pussy & Millions.”
Since the album dropped, speculation has been made around some of Drake’s lyrics, most notably where he rapped, “This bitch lie ‘bout gettin’ shots, but she still a stallion/She don’t even get the joke, but she still smiling.”
Many wondered if Drake was alluding to the ongoing legal battle between Megan Thee Stallion and Tory Lanez in which she was allegedly shot by the Canadian artist.
Meg responded via social media, saying, “I know I’m very popular but y’all gotta stop attaching weak ass conspiracy theories in bars to my name.”
Interestingly, Megan Thee Stallion has a credit on Her Loss. While she’s not a featured artist, she is listed as a co-writer for the opening song “Rich Flex.”
DRAM isn’t done calling out Drake for dissing him on the Toronto rapper’s new collaborative album with 21 Savage, Her Loss.
The “Broccoli” artist hopped on social media on Friday to address the lyrical shots Drake sent in his direction on Her Loss cut “BackOutsideBoyz.” In a video posted to Twitter, DRAM recounted a past confrontation between him and Drake, claiming the Certified Lover Boy rapper let his bodyguards handle the altercation.
“Somebody tell Drake to shut the fuck up about that shit, man,” said DRAM in a video shared on Twitter on Friday. “Fucking five years ago, this n***a never even touched me, n***a. I pressed his ass! His fucking bodyguards, goddamn—I ain’t gonna hold you, his bodyguards went to town on the kid. But his bodyguards did, not his bitch-ass! He ain’t touch me, he’s a bitch. You know that.”
“What’s up, my n***a? But you don’t wanna do that,” DRAM continued. “You wanna have your guards. That’s cool, though. He ain’t touch me, though. And that shit from five years ago! Come on, n***a. … Why don’t you bring up how you got smacked by Diddy or some shit?”
Hours later, DRAM shared more details about the incident in a conversation with TMZ.
“In 2017, at Coachella, he was DJing at a party and I approached him,” DRAM shared. “We stepped outside and there was a whole army of 15 guys.”\
According to DRAM, the heated confrontation quickly became physical, as Drake’s bodyguards physically manhandled the “Cha Cha” rapper.
“I said what I had to say,” he recalled. “That shit was wild.”
The first-week numbers projections for Drakeand 21 Savage’s inaugural collab album Her Loss have started to surface.
Per HITS Daily Double, the album is projected to open at 335-350k.
For Drake, Her Loss marks his second new full-length of the year following the No. 1 debut of Honestly, Nevermind back in June. 21 last released a project with his Spiral: From the Book of Saw Soundtrack EP in May of last year.
Swiftly upon its unveiling on Friday, Her Loss spurred a series of headlines largely centered on the track “Circo Loco.” Megan Thee Stallion, as well as her lawyer, addressed Drake’s “this bitch lie ‘bout getting shots but she still a stallion” in publicly shared responses.
“Despite the irrefutable evidence that Megan was a victim of gunviolence, the ignorant continue to support her attacker,” attorney Alex Spiro said in a statement shared with Complex on Friday.
The artist formerly known as Kanye West also addressed lyrics from “Circo Loco,” specifically a J Prince-mentioning excerpt many had linked with his and Drake’s feud-ending Free Larry Hoover Benefit era.
“Enough already,” Ye said in a tweet on Friday. “I done gave this man his flowers multiple times.”
Drake and 21 kicked off the Her Loss rollout with a surprise pairing amid Morehouse and Spelman Homecoming 2022 festivities in October.
From there, the album’s impending arrival was revealed with the release of the official video for Honestly, Nevermind track “Jimmy Cooks,” followed by a string of cleverly staged faux promo clips.
After a briefer homage to Takeoff on Instagram, Drake eulogized the fallen 28-year-old as he opened his radio show on Thursday night.
On the second episode of Table for One on SiriusXM—leading up to his 21 Savage collab album Her Loss at midnight—Drake remembered the “legendary, unprecedented” Migos member with whom he collaborated on hits including “Walk It Talk It.”
Sounding slightly choked-up at points, the 36-year-old tried to impress upon listeners that life is “worth living, and everybody deserves that chance.”
Read/hear Drake’s full remarks on the death of Takeoff below.
“Before I get into the pleasantries, I’d just like to send our deepest condolences from the family to the entire QC, to our brother Quavo, to our brother Offset, to the friends and loved ones of the legendary, unprecedented Takeoff—a guy that I knew for a long, long time. I’m sure people know how we started, of course, with ‘Versace.’ And from there, you know, we formed a brotherhood. I always talk about the fact that this was one family. My friends in the music industry are not friends, they’re family. So, our deepest condolences—tragic loss for all of us and, you know, a dark cloud over this business that we love so much. And, man, I just encourage everybody to lock into that mindset, no matter where you are, you know? It’s just really…it’s a life that’s worth living, and everybody deserves that chance. It’s unfortunate that one of our dear, dear brothers had to leave us this week. And it’s tough to even talk about, I don’t even know how to really—I don’t have the words, I feel like I’m rambling, but, yeah: again, our deepest condolences from the family. We love you, and I appreciate the memories, appreciate the memories.”
On Instagram on Tuesday, Drizzy shared a picture of himself onstage with the Last Rocket MC, writing, “I got the best memories of all of us seeing the world together and bringing light to every city we touch. That’s what I’ll focus on for now 😔 rest easy space man Take 🚀.”
Takeoff, born Kirshnik Khari Ball, was fatally shot in Houston in the early hours of Nov. 1.
Quality Control confirmed his passing, with the label stating, “Senseless violence and a stray bullet has taken another life from this world and we are devastated. Please respect his family and friends as we continue to process this monumental loss.”
Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said, “We will solve this crime, let us solve this crime. Let us bring the person or persons to justice.”
In October, Takeoff and Quavo shared their first album as Unc & Phew, Only Built for Infinity Links.
New details regarding the death of Takeoff have been revealed as the artist continues to be mourned.
Takeoff, who came to fame as one-third of the platinum-selling rap group Migos, was shot and killed early Tuesday at a private party in Houston, Texas.
He was 28.
The Harris County Medical Examiner’s Office listed the manner of death as homicide with “penetrating gunshot wounds of head and torso into the arm” stated as the cause of his death.
A 23-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman were also injured. Sgt. Michael Arrington of the homicide division told reporters Tuesday that they both were doing ok.
The shooting death of Takeoff, who was known as the quiet, low-key member of his group, which included his uncle Quavo, is the latest high-profile death of a hip-hop artist.
His former group mate and longtime friend Offset has not spoken publicly about Takeoff’s death, but on Wednesday he changed the avatar on his verified Instagram account to a photo of Takeoff with a white heart.
A number of celebrities have paid tribute to the slain artist, including, Drake, Gucci Mane, Machine Gun Kelly and Beyoncé, who changed the landing page of her site to a photo of him.
Takeoff seemed aware of the potential danger that rappers sometimes face,
During a conversation on the “Drink Champs” podcast that recently streamed, he and Quavo talked to hosts N.O.R.E. and DJ EFN about their new album, “Only Built for Infinity Links.”
Talk turned security and the murders of fellow artists Pop Smoke and PnB Rock. Takeoff said, “You’ve got to be careful with social media now.”
“You gotta watch what you post because even though you’re just trying to show off and show your fans stuff, it’s people that follow you and watch you that [have] bad intentions and don’t want the best for you. They’re looking at your page and see you every day,” he said. “That’s why I don’t even really post like that, or if I do, I post after I left the spot. I post tomorrow or the next day and you think I’m at a location. But nah, I’m at the crib.”
Authorities are asking for the witnesses to come forward and provide information in hopes of arresting the person or people responsible.
Drake and 21 Savage have shared their new album Her Loss. The 16-track release features an appearance from Travis Scott on a song called “Pussy & Millions.”
A cut titled “Circo Loco” features a sample and vocal interpolation of Daft Punk’s Discovery hit “One More Time.” Listen to Her Loss below.
The two rappers announced their joint project on October 22. They also released a music video for their collaborative track “Jimmy Cooks,” which appears on Drake’s most recent solo LP, Honestly, Nevermind.
The Mahfuz Sultan–directed video found the men rapping in front of numerous screens, lit up with colourful footage of city life.
Drake and 21 Savage have worked together multiple times in recent years. 21 Savage appeared on Drake’s Certified Lover Boy track “Knife Talk,” while Drake guested on “Mr Right Now,” from 21 Savage and Metro Boomin’s Savage Mode II.
In June, 21 Savage joined Pharrell and Tyler, the Creator on “Cash In Cash Out.”
Honestly, Nevermind became Drake’s 11th No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 albums chart, moving 204,000 equivalent album units in its first week.
The achievement made Drake the fifth artist to release more than 10 No. 1 albums.
Still, the rapper decided not to submit the LP for Grammy nominations, marking the second straight year he has abstained from consideration.
21 Savage’s last studio album as a solo artist was 2018’s I Am > I Was. Savage Mode II arrived in 2020.
A Boogie Wit da Hoodie will not be releasing his new album on Friday as initially planned, and it’s all due to Drake and 21 Savage.
The Bronx native took to his Instagram Stories and said bluntly the reason for the delay was that he didn’t want to compete with Drake and 21’s forthcoming collab album Her Loss, which also drops this Friday.
“Sorry but album dropping in December now, Drake was dropping same day and I’m not with that,” Boogie wrote on his IG with multiple laughing emojis.

Me vs. Myself will now drop on Dec. 9, and will feature the previously released singles “24 Hours” with Lil Durk and “B.R.O.” with Roddy Ricch, which dropped on Oct. 7. The latter pair have an especially fruitful working relationship, and have collaborated numerous times in the past such as on 2019’s “Tip Toe,” and 2020’s “Numbers” and “Lost My Soul.” A Boog said during a 2019 interview with Billboard that he and Roddy Ricch and share an “exact mindset” when it comes to making music.
“You know how you are with your day-one friends? We could be like that, but at the same time, we understand each other enough to know, ‘Aight, I can be next door from him. He’s working on his project, I’m working on my project and we just sit in our own spaces and zone out,’” A Boogie explained. “But then, he can pull up on me like when he pulled up to New York and I’m in Jue Lan club. Same thing when I go to L.A., I pop up on him and it’s the same love. So anytime somebody treats the relationship like that, you gotta keep it going and keep that genuation. I said genuation. That’s a good a—word.”
Me vs. Myself will be the first new album from A Boogie wit Da Hoodie since 2020’s Artist 2.0. He previously dropped off a prequel EP titled B4 AVA last year.
Drizzy and 21 were initially meant to drop Her Loss on Oct. 28, but ended up pushing back the project out of respect for Noah “40” Shebib, who contracted COVID-19 while working on the tape. 21 Savage and the 6 God, meanwhile, graced the cover of Vogue this week, which hit newsstands on Monday.
“Me and my brother on newsstands tomorrow,” Drizzy wrote of the moment on Instagram. “Thanks @voguemagazine and Anna Wintour for the love and support on this historic moment Her Loss Nov 4th.”
Drake has dropped off the visual for his 21 Savage-featuring song, “Jimmy Cooks.”
The collaboration appeared on the Toronto native’s latest album offering, Honestly, Nevermind, which arrived back in June. 21’s feature is the only guest appearance on the project. “Jimmy Cooks”—which is a spin on Drizzy’s Degrassi: The Next Generation character, Jimmy Brooks—debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, as did Honestly, Nevermind on the Billboard 200 albums chart.
The new music video also sees the Drake and 21 tease that they are dropping a joint album titled Her Loss next week on Friday, October 28.
Drake and 21 have collaborated many times before, with their song “Knife Talk” from Drake’s 2021 album Certified Lover Boy being their most recent.
They have also previously released “Mr. Right Now” on 21 and Metro Boomin’s 2020 album Savage Mode II, Drake’s 2016 song “Sneakin,” and the track “Issa” with Young Thug released via SoundCloud in 2017.
Watch the video for “Jimmy Cooks” up top and stay tuned for Her Loss.
In celebration of his 36th birthday next week, the OVO rapper is blessing the public with customer-favorite items from Dave’s Hot Chicken—an LA-based restaurant chain he invested in last year.
“I tried the food and it was amazing,” Drake said in 2021. “After meeting the founders and hearing their story, I jumped at the opportunity to invest.”
The giveaway will take place between 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. local time Monday at all restaurant locations. All guests have to do is show the staff that they follow Dave’s Hot Chicken on Instagram or TikTok; they will then receive a free spiced-to-order slider or tender at their preferred heat levels.
Customers must visit the locations in-person if they want to participate in the celebration. The free fare is not available through online orders or via third-party delivery services.
“Dave’s Hot Chicken will blow your mind! Every Tender is hot, juicy and spicy,” Dave’s Hot Chicken’s CEO Bill Phelps said in a press release. “Our guests across the world have shown the same level of enthusiasm for this company that the founders had five years ago when they were operating a little pop up in Hollywood. Now, in celebration of his birthday and our first national ad campaign, our most famous investor wanted to give something back to fans by letting everyone try Dave’s Hot Chicken on him.”
The celebration coincides with the launch of the restaurant’s first-ever ad campaign, titled “Don’t Die Before You Try It.” The ad includes a series of commercials that take a comedic look at those who never got the chance to taste Dave’s Hot Chicken. You can check out one of the spots below.
Since its inception in 2017, Dave’s Hot Chicken has reportedly become the “Fastest Growing Restaurant Chain in America.” The eatery has locations across California, as well as Colorado, Illinois, Michigan, New York, Texas, and more. You can learn more about Dave’s Hot Chicken at its official website.
It seems that Saturday Night Live is favoring its host also being its musical guest.
Following a successful episode with Megan Thee Stallion pulling double duty, the long-running sketch comedy show will also have Jack Harlow do the same. SNL shared the news on Saturday, in typical notecard-on-corkboard fashion, with the date written on the top card, the host on the second, and the musical guest on the third.
This will be the first time Harlow will host SNL, and his second time as musical guest. He most recently released his second album, Come Home the Kids Miss You, later sharing the video from his Drake collaboration, “Churchill Downs.”
The visual saw the two rappers placing bets at this year’s Kentucky Derby and rapping on the sidelines. In August, he took home four awards at the MTV Video Music Awards, one of which was Song of the Summer. He’s also set to appear in the White Men Can’t Jump remake.
Meg starred on SNL last night, giving a monologue that touched on the removal of her Popeyes Hottie Sauce and earning her bachelor’s degree, acting in a handful of skits, and performing three Traumazine cuts “Anxiety,” “NDA,” and “Plan B.”
Fans shouldn’t expect Drake and The Weeknd’s names to appear in this year’s Grammy nominations.
According to Pitchfork, the pair didn’t submit their respective albums for consideration this year, and are once again boycotting the awards show. While voters received ballots today with no inclusion of Drake’s Honestly, Nevermind and The Weeknd’s Dawn FM, the Toronto natives are still credited on other songs as guest artists. Their hit album cuts, “Sticky” and “Sacrifice,” also didn’t appear on ballots.
Drizzy has been at odds with the Grammy Awards and Recording Academy for some time, going back to 2017 when he won two awards that he said he didn’t want. He also slammed the academy for placing “Hotline Bling” in rap categories rather than pop. Last year, he pulled his songs after they were already sent in for consideration and he was nominated for Certified Lover Boy and “Way 2 Sexy,” which left an opening in both fields.
There has been some discord between Abel Tesfaye and the academy after he blasted the Grammys last year for failing to nominate After Hours and the hit album single “Blinding Lights,” saying he was fully snubbed and that he would be boycotting the awards show from then on.
“Because of the secret committees, I will no longer allow my label to submit my music to the Grammys,” he said. However, he still won an award for Best Melodic Rap Performance for Kanye West’s “Hurricane.”
In other Grammy news, Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak have also decided not to submit their joint album Silk Sonic for consideration. They won four awards this year for the lead single, “Leave the Door Open.”
When FC Barcelona suits up to play Real Madrid this weekend during the El Clásico, their kits will look a bit different. To celebrate 50 billion streams on Spotify, Drake is teaming up with Barcelona to add the OVO Sound logo to their jersey.
Drake initially teased the newly branded kits on Friday morning, showing off OVO’s signature owl placed right in the center of the jersey. “This doesn’t feel real but it is,” he wrote in the caption.
“We were really excited to celebrate one of the biggest games of the year and mark Drake’s milestone as the first artist to reach 50 billion streams,” said Marc Hazan, VP of Partnerships at Spotify. “We’ve always said that we want this partnership to be a celebration of fans, players and artists on a global stage – and there’s no bigger stage than El Clásico.”
The partnership comes several months after the Spanish club unveiled a partnership with Spotify that added the streaming service’s branding to Barcelona’s stadium, making its official name Spotify Camp Nou. It will be the first time since 2006 that the stadium holds a sponsored name.
“Our alliance with Spotify goes beyond a mere commercial relationship. It is a strategic relationship through which we seek to bring together two worlds that can arouse emotion, namely music and football,” said Juli Guiu, Vice President for the marketing area of FC Barcelona. “This initiative is another example of this desire and the innovative spirit of our collaboration.”
Barcelonawill wear a limited-edition jersey donning the logo of rapper and singer Drake during Sunday’s El Clasico against Real Madrid.
The idea stems from Barca’s relationship with audio streaming subscription service Spotify, whose branding usually appears on the front of the Blaugrana’s shirts and who own the naming rights to Camp Nou.
But rather than Spotify branding on jerseys this weekend, Barca will instead sport Drake’s ‘OVO Sound’ logo – essentially the silhouette of an owl.
It is a move designed to celebrate Drakebecoming the first artist to break the 50 billion streams barrier on Spotify.
The four-time Grammy winner’s achievement was not recent, however, with the Canadian reaching the 50 billion mark in January 2021.
In addition to his logo featuring on Barca jerseys throughout the game, Xavi’s team will also wear a special version during their warm-up, with ‘DRAKE 50’ on the back – the usual Spotify brand will appear on the front of this shirt.
Barcelona travel to the Santiago Bernabeu as LaLiga leaders, but they are only ahead of bitter rivals Madrid on goal difference after both teams won seven and drew the other in their first eight games of the season.
When Drake walked onstage to host the Nike Maxim Award Show in Beaverton, Oregon in early September 2022, he captured the attention of countless celebrities, athletes, and fans in attendance, but not for the reason you may think. It wasn’t his speech—although incredibly witty and humorous—that stole the show. Instead, it was the Nike swoosh-shaped detail braided into his hair. He later followed the public appearance with close-up shots of his protective style on Instagram, which garnered even more positive feedback.
At this point in his career, Drake understands that how he presents himself at live events and on social media—the kissy-face selfies, comedic captions, and eccentric hairstyles—is just as crucial to his brand as his chart-topping music. In the past two years, his hairstyles have become a focal point of his brand and have played their own role in his album rollouts and marketing campaigns. Before the Nike swoosh hairstyle, Drake debuted his close-cut fade featuring a heart-shaped cutout by his temple in preparation for 2021’s Certified Lover Boy. And most recently, Drizzy has been rocking a variety of braided styles that coincided with the release of his summer album, Honestly, Nevermind. Though Drake deserves credit for the branded machine he’s cultivated over the last few years, he isn’t doing it alone. The stylist responsible for the new era of Drake’s hair evolution is 22-year-old designer Bri Marie, who’s been building a hair empire over the last three years.
“My whole story is actually pretty crazy,” Bri Marie tells Complex. “This whole braiding [career] just fell in my lap.” It’s noon on the East Coast, but the South Florida-based stylist has already met with several clients before she hopped on this Zoom call. She works with Riff Raff and Rich Homie Quan in addition to Drake, who she started working with this year.

Had things gone a little differently, Bri Marie might have had a career in the military instead of designing celebrity hairstyles. “Fresh out of [high] school, the whole plan was for me to go to the military. That was what my parents wanted me to do,” Bri Marie recalls of her early ambitions after graduating from high school in 2018. So after graduation, she started on that track, visiting recruiters’ offices and waiting to begin basic training. That same year, a friend reached out to her with an unexpected request. “There was this guy on the basketball team, and he asked me, ‘can you do this braid style for me really quick?’” she remembers.
Bri Marie had always been the cousin that braided her family’s hair, but this particular style request was more complex than what she’d previously done. Still, she agreed to try it. “I saw it, and I was just like, ‘I do not know how to do that, but I could try it.’ It really made me interested in creating art out of someone’s head. So, I did it on him, and I posted his hair on Snapchat. Clients just started coming in.”
Just like that, Bri Marie began to accept new clients on a routine basis and braid their hair out of her garage. At the time, she also held a daytime restaurant job, making her hours even longer. During the day, she worked 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the restaurant, then she’d go straight into braiding hair, oftentimes until 2 a.m. She notes that the long schedule continued for a while until she experienced a moment of reckoning.
During a crossroads decision of whether she should continue doing hair or go to the military as originally intended, Bri Marie looked to her faith for answers. “On Thursday, I was praying. I was just so conflicted. And this girl came up to me like, “listen, this is confirmation that you shouldn’t go [to the military,]’” she recalls. “I came back home and told my mom, ‘I’m going to have faith and just stick it out and go the hair route.’” The next day, she called the recruiter and passed on going to the military and started doing hair full time. After leaving the military behind, she attended a one-year cosmetology program to receive certification and then gained employment at a local barbershop in her hometown, where she continued to grow her brand and clientele. “I went to the barbershop with 200 followers [on IG], and I left with 10K,” she says.

Bri Marie’s first celebrity client was rapper Riff Raff in 2019. Riff Raff’s PR team reached out to her via Instagram DM after discovering her name under a hashtag. His braids, which often include intricate swirls, shapes, and details, are all over Bri Marie’s Instagram page. His co-sign also helped her bag more exclusive clientele. Now, Bri Marie welcomes celebrities like the aforementioned plus James Harden, Swae Lee, and more into her chair.
Most of her new clients, she says, have found her through social media, namely Instagram. Drake, however, was introduced to her through a friend of a friend. The OVO rapper admired a style she did for his friend and immediately inquired about booking her. “He saw it and was like, ‘Bro, I need that.’ I got the call the next day and was like, ‘Come through,’” she says, looking back on that moment in awe.
Drake’s now-staple braided style includes two to four stitch braids, which is a braiding technique that is achieved by sectioning the hair in clean, horizontal lines. The style took around 45 minutes to an hour to perfect. Bri Marie notes, “the more simple [the style], the more intricate it really is.” But she also enjoys tackling challenging designs.
The Nike swoosh was an exciting challenge for the young hairstylist. It took a total of two hours to do, the hardest part being “drawing out the Nike sign” as if she was using a pencil on paper. “[We] had a conversation about trying something new, and something that would be branded towards that event,” she says of how the style came about. “It’s simple, but it’s still doing a whole lot. It was just really off the top of our heads. We’re like, ‘Why not? Let’s just try to see if we can create that shape.’ It was my first time doing it, and it was executed perfectly.”
The style was a hit to say the least. Bri Marie remembers the moment she saw Drake make his debut onstage. “I remember watching how he put his head down, just seeing how precise the stitches were looking. It made me feel proud,” she acknowledges. “They [were] saying how clean it is. If anything, it makes me feel like, ‘Wow, you did that.’”
The swoosh isn’t the only trick in her bag. Just by looking at her Instagram account, it’s clear that Bri Marie specializes in details. What many wouldn’t know, however, is that all of her designs, just like the Nike swoosh, were done off the cuff.
“All those styles that I’ve done on my page, those are my first time doing it,” reveals the designer. “Actually, some of those styles are just off the top of my head. I’m driving down the street and I’m just looking at shapes. I’m looking at the signs on the road, the sky. I just try to piece all those things together to see if I can replicate it on someone’s head… I don’t have a mannequin head. I don’t practice on anything prior to me trying it on someone’s head, but it always ends up working out.”
Now, Bri Marie can add anything from a star or scorpion to an octopus or geometric shape of any kind to a client’s style, “it just depends on what they’re feeling,” she says. Her designs capture a growing trend of creative experimentation with braided styles in the industry. Over the years, celebs such as Beyoncé, Rihanna, and ASAP Rocky have incorporated unique detailing into their braids. In 2018, designer Alexander Wang featured eccentric braided styles, which included letters and other designs in his runway show for New York Fashion Week. Bri Marie, theorizes that the trend started during the pandemic when people were growing their hair out and looking for expressive styles.
“I feel like shapes add a little bit of flavor rather than being simple. It becomes a lot more intriguing for other people to try,” she explains. “Guys want to be hip. They want to have the latest. They want to stand out. There’s so many different things that go into it. Shapes can really turn the style up a lot more.”

Since Drake, the number of requests for his particular hairstyle have grown exponentially, and Bri Marie confirms her platform has grown as well. “It’s one of those things where you don’t know until you know,” she says of the payoff of Drake’s support. “I’d definitely say it really helped bring a lot more traction to my work, a lot more people recognizing that I do have a love and a passion for my brand.”
Drake is just the beginning, though. In addition to having a booked schedule, the hair designer also launched a durag and bonnet line called BMogul. The collection is made of silk or velvet fabric and comes in an array of vibrant colors, giving a luxury feel. And she hints at other business moves in the works, although she’s hesitant to share any more details right now.
Looking back on how far she’s come in just three short years, Bri Marie shares the motto that keeps her moving forward: “If you put God first, you will succeed. Believe in yourself and never give up on your dreams because you never know where your talent can take you.”
As far as the design she’ll tackle next, she’s not even sure. But we’ll see it soon enough. “I’m always trying to outdo every style that I’ve done before. I just try to do stuff that has never really been done before. It really helps me get better and better.”
Ice Spice says she has no hard feelings toward Drake.
Earlier this year, Drizzy co-signed the up-and-coming NYC rapper and praised her breakout track “Munch (Feelin’ U).” Shortly after, Drake invited Ice Spice to OVO Fest 2022, where they were spotted hanging out together. Though it seemed like they were developing a solid friendship, fans immediately noticed Drake had abruptly unfollowed the 22-year-old on Instagram, leading some to believe there was some kind of beef.
During an appearance on BET’s Rap City 22, Ice Spice spoke about meeting Drake and her experience in The 6ix.
“So, when he first hit me up, I had just landed in LAX for my Munch Open Mic, right?” she told host DJ Blue Diamond (2:28). “And, he was like, ‘Yo, ‘Munch’ is hard. You’re On the Radar freestyle was hard.’ And, I was like, ‘Damn, like, can I post this with the release date? And, he was like, ‘Yeah, yeah. Thanks for asking. Matter of fact, you should come to OVO Fest.’”
Ice Spice said she flew out to Toronto the following day and joined Drake for the music event. She recalled the high energy within the stadium, and watching both Nicki Minaj and Lil Wayne perform. She said the experience was “lit” and “like a movie,” suggesting she left the city on good terms with Drake.
Blue Diamond then pressed Ice Spice about the unfollow and asked if she could spill the tea.
“He did [unfollow],” she admitted. “I don’t know why though.”
“Shame on you, Drake. Shame on you,” the host responded. “You shouldn’t have done that.”
Republic Records, one of the most powerful record labels in the US, will stop using the word “urban” to describe music of black origin.
The company, which is home to Drake and Ariana Grande, says it will no longer use the term to describe “departments, employee titles and music genres”.
“We encourage the rest of the music industry to follow suit,” it added.
The term is often considered to be a generalization that marginalizes music by black artists.
“‘Urban’ is a lazy, inaccurate generalization of several culturally rich art forms,” radio presenter DJ Semtex told the magazine Music Business UK in 2018.
“I despise the word,” he added. “I know artists that do hip-hop, grime, or rap. I don’t know anyone that does urban music.
“The connotation of the word doesn’t hold a positive weight,” agreed Sam Taylor, a senior vice president at Kobalt Music, in an interview with Billboard in 2018.
“It’s downgrading R&B, soul and hip-hop’s incredible impact on music.”
The term dates back to the mid-1970s, when black New York radio DJ Frankie Crocker coined the phrase “urban contemporary” as a label for the eclectic mix of songs that he played – which covered everything from James Brown to Doris Day.
At the time, the label didn’t carry negative connotations but, after being shortened to “urban” it started being used as a catch-all for music created by black musicians – effectively lumping them into one category, regardless of genre.
Republic Records reflected the growing discomfort around the term in a statement announcing it would remove the word from its company vocabulary.
“‘Urban’ is rooted in the historical evolution of terms that sought to define black music,” it said.
“As with a lot of our history, the original connotation of the term urban was not deemed negative. However, over time the meaning and connotations of ‘urban’ have shifted and it developed into a generalisation of black people in many sectors of the music industry, including employees and music by black artists.
“While this change will not and does not affect any of our staff structurally, it will remove the use of this antiquated term.
“We encourage the rest of the music industry to consider following suit as it is important to shape the future of what we want it to look like, as to not adhere to the outdated structures of the past.”
‘Important step forward’
The label, whose roster also includes The Weeknd, Nicki Minaj, Post Malone and Taylor Swift, also announced the formation of an “action committee” to address social justice issues.
Management company Milk & Honey, whose songwriters have contributed to hits by Drake & Rick Ross, The Chainsmokers, Dua Lipa and Selena Gomez also declared it would “formally eliminate the term ‘urban’ at our company”.
In a statement posted to social media, it said: “We will no longer be using the term as we believe it’s an important step forward, and an outdated word, which has no place in 2020 onwards.”
The move comes in the wake of widespread protests in the US and UK over the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis two weeks ago,
A white police officer was filmed kneeling on Mr Floyd’s neck for almost nine minutes, while the 46-year-old repeated several times, “I can’t breathe”. He was later pronounced dead in hospital.
His death prompted hundreds of thousands to take to the streets demanding racial justice.
The music industry responded by pausing work for a day last week, with Universal Music – Republic Records’ parent company – establishing a “task force to accelerate our efforts in areas such as inclusion and social justice”.
However, others have said the industry needs widespread systemic change, rather than “window dressing”.
“Why is it that black music generates millions and millions of dollars a year and yet none of the companies have a meaningful number of employees of colour, let alone in the executive suite?” asked senior music industry lawyer Ronald E. Sweeney in an open letter published on Sunday.
Sweeney, who has represented the likes of James Brown, P Diddy and Public Enemy, drew up a 12-point plan to address what he called “the elephant in the room”, including equal pay and the creation of a three-year programme to train people from minority backgrounds for executive roles.
“[This] is what meaningful and real change looks like,” he wrote. “So, let’s see what you do.”
Drake is donating to relief efforts that will aid those who have been arrested while protesting the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minn. last week.
On Monday (June 1), Drake posted a screenshot of a rather large donation. The 6 God gave $100,000 to the National Bail Out fund, which is “an organization built on reuniting families, creating a national community of leaders who have experienced incarceration, and working with groups across the country to transform harmful systems to keep people safe and free,” according to the organization’s website.
Drizzy shared a screenshot on his IG story, showing a copy of his six-digit receipt, which read, “@mustafathepoet say less.” Drake’s donation is a response to Mustafa the Poet’s $400 contribution to help protesters demanding justice for George Floyd, who died after former Minneapolis Police Department officer Derek Chauvin kneeled on his neck for nearly 10 minutes on May 25.
“My Toronto kings @champagnepapi and @theweeknd Swipe up and match my donation. But add three zeros! Let’s help reunite black families,” Mustafa wrote in an Instagram story post.
Rappers have also been using their platforms to speak about their outrage and aid in change. Jay-Z vocalized his concerns to the Minnesota Governor Tim Walz on Sunday (May 31) about how George Floyd’s murder case is currently being handled.

A law firm used by A-list stars including Rod Stewart, Lil Nas X and Robert De Niro has been hacked.
The website for Grubman Shire Meiselas & Sacks is down and hackers claim to have 756 gigabytes of data including contracts and personal emails.
A screenshot allegedly of a Madonna contract has been released, and the criminals are demanding payment.
The New York law firm says it has notified its clients and is working with cyber-security experts.
It’s not known what sum the hackers are demanding and whether the law firm is negotiating with them.
The law firm said in a press statement: “We can confirm that we’ve been victimised by a cyber-attack. We have notified our clients and our staff. We have hired the world’s experts who specialise in this area, and we are working around the clock to address these matters.”
The company’s website is displaying just a logo but historic records of the site show a client list of more than 200 high profile people and companies.
Musicians include Sir Elton John, Barbra Streisand, Barry Manilow, Rod Stewart, Lady Gaga, Lil Nas X, The Weeknd, Madonna, U2 and Drake.
Other clients named are Andrew Lloyd Webber, Priyanka Chopra, Robert De Niro, Sofia Vergara, Activision, Inc, Sony Corp, LeBron James and Mike Tyson.
The hackers known as REvil or Sodinokibi previously attacked foreign exchange company Travelex with ransomware in January.
Ransomware is one of the biggest problems in cyber-security and is a malicious type of software that encrypts data until a ransom is paid, usually in untraceable crypto-currency Bitcoin.
Cyber-security company Emsisoft says the hackers have posted images online of a contract for Madonna’s World Tour 2019-20 complete with signatures from an employee and concert company Live Nation.
Hackers have also uploaded an image they claim shows the stolen data directory with folders named under certain clients. Posting a sample of stolen data is often done as a way to prove a hack has happened and put pressure on a victim to pay a ransom.
“Companies in this position have no good options available to them,” Brett Callow, threat analyst at Emsisoft said. “Non-payment of the demand will result in the information being published; payment will simply get them a pinky promise from criminals that the stolen data will be deleted.
“These incidents are becoming increasingly commonplace and increasingly concerning. And incidents involving law firms are even more concerning due to the sensitivity of the data they hold.”
The law firm and some of the celebrities have been approached for further comment.
How is Drake coping with life in lockdown? Fighting boredom by dropping dance moves, if the video for his new single, Toosie Slide, is anything to go by.
Beyond showing the rapper taking isolation seriously, donning a face mask and gloves while staying home like so many of us (admittedly from his astronomically large Toronto pad) it also introduces the track’s namesake dance routine.
“It goes right foot up, left foot slide / Left foot up, right foot slide,” he sings, while demonstrating the moves in his lobby.
Seemingly harmless fun – but for Maddy Raven of digital music marketing agency Burstimo, it doubles as a “fantastic” social media marketing ploy.
Drake’s simple, easily-copied choreography is perfect for the new wave of video-based social media platforms, in particular Tik Tok.
The Chinese-owned social media app, in which users create 15-second clips, usually set to music, was second only to WhatsApp in global downloads last year.
With a billion users of its international version, it’s increasingly established itself as a way for unknown artists to score a breakout hit – from Lil Nas X’s Old Town Road, to Doja Cat’s Say So and Arizona Zervas’s Roxanne – in the same way that featuring in a television advert could supercharge an artist’s sales in the pre-internet era.
“TikTok’s an entirely new way of engaging, not only with your direct fanbase but anyone who wants to dance or show their creativity in short-form video,” says Sammy Andrews, CEO of Deviate Digital, an advisory agency to the entertainment industry.
Skip Youtube post by Best TikTok Compilations
Drake himself alluded to this in December’s single, War, chastising rappers who “spend too much time on [Instagram] captions, not enough time on action.”
Shortly after he took his own advice, messaging internet-famous dancer Toosie a beat with some lyrics, and asking for help creating a routine. Four months on, the song has topped Billboard charts.
‘Don’t you want to dance with me?’
The star is no stranger to viral dance recognition. His awkward moves in the video for 2015’s Hotline Bling spawned endless memes, while the track In My Feelings inadvertently sparked the ‘Kiki challenge’ of summer 2018. The Toosie slide, however, is noticeably more transparent about its ambitions.
Raven believes this is a dance partnership of self-interest, capitalizing on Drake’s dance pop-culture heritage, and making new music directly to his young fanbase.
The majority of TikTok’s users are aged between 16-24, firmly Gen Z – an audience with fragmented consumption habits, who rank Drake as one of their generation’s most influential musicians.
Dance is also central to the platform’s success – with routines like The Get Down, Renegade and Cannibal all going viral since parent company ByteDance absorbed lip-syncing app Musical.ly, (plus its huge database), in 2017.
Add to this TikTok’s unique layout, which prioritises content discovery over subscriber clout, using an algorithm that learns from viewing preferences and therefore rewards retention rather than simply pushing popular content – and it’s a stage that even a megastar like Drake, now 33, can’t ignore.
“This is a new frontier for music discovery and music interaction,” says Andrews. “Unlike many other apps people are actively seeking music to engage with, in ways that most have not on other platforms”.
Toosie Slide is a “perfect example” of writing specifically for the platform says Raven. “Its straightforward lyrics provide clear instructions for a potential dance trend, even if it isn’t publicly stated”.
And it’s a tactic that appears to be paying off. Two days after the video’s release, views of Tik Tok entries submitted under the #toosieslide hashtag had already hit 20 million. A fortnight later, the tag has been viewed 2.4 billion times (including three attempts by Justin Bieber). That’s a lot of eyes and ears by anyone’s standards.
“Make no mistake every record label in the world is now actively looking for ways to utilise TikTok as part of a marketing campaign for a track,” says Andrews.
Snowball effect
The hungry marketing push is part of a broader picture, as TikTok traction can often be a springboard for further success on mainstream music streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music.
Just last month The Weeknd’s Blinding Lights started trending on TikTok and is “now chart-topping and one of his most streamed songs,” explains Raven, helping him reach 64 million monthly listeners on Spotify for the first time in his career.
One of the most famous examples of TikTok’s potential snowball effect is Nas X’s Old Town Road. Prior to becoming a global country-crossover smash with Billy Rae Cyrus, the rapper’s original version broke out on TikTok, with creators playing it in their videos as they transformed themselves into cowboys and cowgirls.
Its continued success saw Nas X go from a college dropout sleeping on his sister’s floor to instigating a major-label bidding war, ultimately signing to Columbia Records.
“I should maybe be paying TikTok,” Nas X told Time magazine last year. “They really boosted the song.
