South Sudan has declared a two-week suspension of all schools due to a severe heatwave that has led to several students collapsing.
This marks the second time the nation has shut down schools amid extreme temperatures in the months of February and March, with the country already grappling with the impacts of climate change, including seasonal flooding.
Deputy Education Minister Martin Tako Moi shared that, on average, 12 students are collapsing daily in Juba. The majority of schools are housed in temporary structures made from iron sheets, lacking access to electricity needed for cooling.
Environment Minister Josephine Napwon Cosmos has advised residents to stay indoors and keep hydrated as temperatures are expected to soar to 42°C (107.6°F). She also recommended that government workers operate in shifts to minimize heat-related health risks.
Some education workers have suggested altering the school calendar so that institutions close in February and reopen in April, once the weather improves. Abraham Kuol Nyuon, Dean of the Graduate College at the University of Juba, emphasized that the school calendar should be tailored to the local climate in the country’s ten states.
A civil society organization, Integrity South Sudan, criticized the government for its failure to properly plan for such events. They argue that the recurring school closures reflect the government’s neglect of the educational needs of the country’s children.
South Sudan’s health system is under strain due to ongoing political instability. The country’s previous conflict, from 2013 to 2018, led to nearly 400,000 deaths before a peace agreement was signed. Additionally, the nation’s elections, which were scheduled for last year, have been delayed for two years due to a lack of funding. The country is also experiencing an economic crisis, worsened by disruptions in oil exports following damage to a key pipeline in neighboring Sudan, though the pipeline has since been repaired.
A tragic attack on travelers in Walewale has claimed the lives of two passengers and left a bus completely destroyed by fire.
The bus, which was traveling from Kumasi to Garu, was attacked by armed men after stopping in front of the ADB Bank in Walewale.
The attack is suspected to be linked to the ongoing chieftaincy conflict in Bawku.
Just a day earlier, on February 11, 2025, a similar attack near Wulugu on the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway left three passengers dead, with their bus set on fire.
In another incident on February 12, a gunfight in Bawku claimed three more lives, adding to the growing violence in the area.
These recent deaths have brought the total number of casualties in the conflict to 54 since its resurgence in October 2024.
The Bawku chieftaincy dispute remains one of Ghana’s most protracted and contentious conflicts, rooted in a complex mix of historical, ethnic, and political factors.
At the heart of the issue is the struggle for chieftaincy legitimacy between the Mamprusi and Kusasi ethnic groups in the Bawku Traditional Area.
While the Mamprusi assert historical rights to the Bawku skin, the Kusasi claim it based on demographic majority and political support gained in recent decades (Longi, 2014).
The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has urged rival factions to prioritize peace for the area’s development.
He warned that prolonged violence would lead to poverty, stagnation in infrastructure, and worsening living conditions.
He called on all parties to reflect on their actions and seek peaceful solutions for the sake of future generations.
Meanwhile, the country’s Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has assured that the government remains committed to resolving the Bawku conflict through traditional mechanisms as part of a broader effort to restore lasting peace.

However, for a former student of Ola Girls Senior High School in Ho, Volta Region, the death of a former housemistress has elicited an unexpected reaction.
In a video shared on X by a user named Law, the former student expressed surprising joy upon learning of the passing of the housemistress, known as Madam Milly.
She explained that the deceased had mistreated her during her time at the school, leading to her current reaction.
The former student’s response highlights the complex emotions that can accompany personal grievances, even in the face of death.
“Should I tell you why I am smiling? I just heard good news: my housemistress back in SHS is dead. This better be true. We thank God, in everything we give thanks.
“That woman will never rest in peace, Madam Milly. Send this video to her if she is in her grave. Send it to Ola Girls. Because of this woman, I never had peace.
“If she is dead, hallelujah! I am so excited. It sweet me. My SHS was miserable because of that woman,” she said amid intermittent laughter.
A tragic incident occurred at the Koans Estate at Satellite-Kuntunse, Adjen Kotoku in the Greater Accra Region, on August 18, 2024, where a 25-year-old man, Stanley Ahadzi was allegedly shot dead by a policeman.
The altercation began when the police officer, Constable Smith Gyekyi, with the International Relations Directorate of the Ghana Police Service, who was working as a commercial driver at the time, became involved in a dispute over fare with Ahadzi.
The situation arose when Constable Smith Gyekyi, an officer with the International Relations Directorate of the Ghana Police Service who was also operating as a commercial driver, became embroiled in a fare dispute with Ahadzi.
According to a report from the Amasaman Division of the Ghana Police Service, this disagreement rapidly escalated, leading to the fatal shooting.
The details indicate that Mr Ahadzi was not a passenger in the vehicle. Instead, he had been called to the scene by his friend, Esther Owusua, who was the actual passenger.
Ms. Owusua had reached out to Mr Ahadzi for assistance with directions after being transported by Constable Gyekyi from Ablekuma Joma to the Koans Estate area in Kuntunse Satellite.
When Ahadzi arrived, a dispute over the fare owed by Ms. Owusua quickly intensified between him and Constable Gyekyi. The confrontation escalated to the point where Constable Gyekyi allegedly drew his sidearm and shot Ahadzi without any apparent provocation.
Following the incident, Mr Ahadzi’s body was transported to the Police Hospital Morgue, where it is currently being preserved pending an autopsy.
Constable Smith Gyekyi later surrendered to the Amasaman Police, where he was detained, and his firearm was seized for further investigation.

Upon inspection, Abigail was found deceased, hanging in her room.

Tensions are rising in Tuobodom, situated in the Techiman North municipality of the Bono East Region, due to a chieftaincy dispute between two opposing chiefs.
It is feared that a dozen people have died in the alleged ongoing conflict, which has significantly disrupted life in and around Tuobodom.
The conflict has taken a tragic turn, claiming the life of a passing truck driver amidst a barrage of gunfire in the township.
The violent clash has compelled many residents to flee the town in search of safety, leaving Tuobodom in a state of heightened fear and instability.
The chieftaincy dispute, which has been brewing for some time, has now reached a critical point, affecting not only the immediate parties involved but also innocent bystanders and the wider community.
Security services are working to restore order and ensure the safety of residents, but the situation remains volatile.
Residents of Bole in the Savannah Region have imposed a self-initiated curfew to protect themselves from a series of horrific serial killings in the area.
The victims have been discovered with mutilated bodies, often missing parts, and left in public locations.
So far, four deaths have occurred under these alarming circumstances. Despite increased security efforts, the community remains doubtful about their safety.
In an interview with JoyNews, Abu Hassan, the Assembly Member for Mempeasem, described how Bole’s streets empty out before 8 pm, creating an atmosphere of fear and anxiety within the community.
“As I am speaking, I am also in my room because of the way the killings started. Before we realised, in a month, three people had been murdered in my area, and even what made people more fearful was the last one who was killed and a red towel was placed on him.
“In fact, it was disturbing so because of that, nobody wants to be the next victim and that is why the whole town, after 8 pm movement ceases.
“You will not see any movement and the whole place will become quiet,” he said.
Another resident said, “When it is 8 pm, you will not see anybody roaming about because of the insecurity in Bole town. After we recorded the first killing, within a week, two people died. Because of that we just imposed self-curfew although there are security personnel in town”.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has deployed a specialized team to Bole and its surrounding areas in the Savannah Region.
This team will support the Regional Police Command in investigating the reported cases of unnatural deaths that have occurred over the past six months.
A family, supported by fellow residents and a youth association in Keta in the Volta Region, is urging the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to investigate the circumstances surrounding the passing of a community member, Jerry Kpesenu.
Jerry Kpesenu reportedly passed away while in the custody of the Keta police following his arrest.
The collective asserts that the deceased was mistreated and unlawfully killed due to his refusal to comply with police directives.
During a press briefing on Monday, June 10, spokesperson for the youth group, Forceman Doe William, stated, “Our immediate plea is for the IGP to promptly, as an urgent measure, suspend, I reiterate and emphasize, suspend the officers involved.
“Set up a five-member committee to include an appointed member from the deceased’s family and another from the Keta youth, and we request an independent autopsy in a highly professional pathology centre in Ghana at the cost of the police,” he said.
Mr. William contended that had the authorities summoned the deceased to the police station in a respectful manner, he would still be alive today.
As reported by the Daily Graphic on June 6, the individual in question prevented their tenant from installing an air conditioner in their rented space, asserting that the tenant required their consent to proceed.
This resulted in a heated confrontation between them, prompting the tenant to report the incident to law enforcement.
The family spokesperson recounted that two law enforcement officers, one in uniform and the other in plain clothes, arrived at his residence and commenced assaulting him before escorting him to the Keta Divisional Police Command, where he purportedly succumbed to the inflicted mistreatment.
Nevertheless, law enforcement authorities maintain that the 45-year-old individual fell ill while under detention and was swiftly transported to the Keta Municipal Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased upon arrival.
More than 1,000 people in Mozambique have died due to a lack of care amid a health workers’ strike, a union leader told the BBC.
The strike, involving 50,000 union members, began three weeks ago after negotiations over working conditions broke down.
Doctors are not participating in the strike, but union leader Anselmo Muchave noted that many health facilities do not employ doctors.
He reported that most of the deaths occurred in the provinces of Inhambane and Sofala. The BBC has not been able to independently verify these figures.
The health ministry has previously accused the Association of United Health Professionals of Mozambique (APSUSM) of exaggeration. The ministry has not responded to a BBC request for comment.
“We receive information every day about deaths,” said Mr Muchave, the chairperson of APSUSM.
“The worst-affected facilities are those staffed only by health workers and not doctors.”
Nurses, psychologists, drivers and cleaners are among those striking for overtime allowances and better medical equipment.
Mr Muchave said the workers were forced to strike because they faced such dire conditions, which the government was refusing to confront.
“There is little to no surgical material, food for patients [or] petrol for ambulances. Workers haven’t received uniforms for years. Something needs to change. Sometimes in the maternity [wards] you will find women sharing beds. It’s very dangerous,” he said.
One woman in the capital, Maputo, confirmed that patients were suffering because of the strike.
“My grandmother was sick and [when] I took her to the public hospital she was only attended to the following day. She was really sick. She said others were also really sick but were not being attended to,” the woman who gave her first name as Sheila told the BBC.
Health infrastructure is limited across Mozambique, with fewer than three doctors per 100,000 people, making it one of the lowest doctor-to-population ratios in the world.
According to the US Agency for International Development (USAID), more than half of Mozambicans walk an hour or more to reach their nearest health facility, and it is common for medicines to be out of stock or in short supply.
Nurses, psychologists, drivers, and cleaners are among those striking for overtime allowances and better medical equipment.
Mr. Muchave stated that the workers were compelled to strike due to the dire conditions they faced, which the government was refusing to address.
A third victim has succumbed to injuries sustained in the premix fuel fire outbreak at Egyiresia near Sekondi, raising the total number of fatalities to three.
The fire, which occurred on Saturday, May 18, was caused by leaking premix fuel that ignited from a nearby fish-smoking facility.
Two victims died on Sunday, May 19, leaving 14 others receiving treatment.
According to the Assembly Member for Egyiresia-Mempasem, Gabriel Ato Mensah, one of the victims, 55-year-old Isaac Blankson, passed away while receiving treatment at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital on Tuesday, May 21.
However, there is some positive news as five patients have been discharged from the hospital, while the remaining victims are still receiving treatment.
“The current update is that [on Tuesday] around 11:30 in the morning, we also received news of the demise of one Isaac Blankson, 55-year-old, who was even the first victim we took to Korle Bu for further treatment.
“So it has now brought the death toll to three and currently, we have two patients at the Korle Bu Hospital.
“We have also been able to discharge five people, three from Effia-Nkwanta and two from Saint Benedict Hospital. We also have five undergoing several treatments at Effia-Nkwanta and one at Saint Benedict.”

Ghanaian highlife artist Kofi Kinaata has dismissed concerns over death prophecies made against him by certain prophets.
His response follows a viral video featuring a pastor declaring a divine warning regarding Kinaata’s safety and urging public prayers for him.
Addressing the prophecy on Joy Prime’s morning show, Kinaata acknowledged awareness of it but conveyed his lack of concern.
“I don’t even want to talk about it. That’s what he has seen, and he’s saying it. Maybe me too; I have seen it, and I haven’t come out to say it,” he said.
Kinaata also disclosed that receiving such prophecies had become routine in his life, as he has encountered them on a monthly basis ever since he embarked on his music career.
Kinaata also disclosed that receiving such prophecies had become routine in his life, as he has encountered them on a monthly basis ever since he embarked on his music career.
“I hear this every month, sometimes in a month it would come from different places,” he added.
He clarified that his religious practice of praying five times a day is based on his Christian beliefs rather than fear of these prophecies. He expressed his desire to distance himself from such negative predictions.
These remarks were made during his media tour to promote his upcoming album, ‘Kofi O Kofi,’ scheduled for release at the end of April 2024.
The album will feature seven tracks, including his recent single “Effiekuma Heartbreak.” Other tracks include “Auntie Ama,” “Abonsam Ye Me Neighbor (Abonsam),” “Saman Aba Wo Fie (Saman),” “I Don’t Care,” and “Take Away.”
Prophet Nigel Gaisie has once again turned his prophetic attention toward one of Accra’s prominent media organizations.
The General Overseer of the Prophetic Hill Chapel has issued a call for urgent action to avert the looming threat of death hovering over this specific media establishment.
In a video shared on his Facebook page, Prophet Nigel emphasized the seriousness of the situation, drawing parallels to past prophecies that have come to fruition.
He singled out a radio station within the media conglomerate, which has tragically experienced death incidents before, as the primary target of his concern.
Addressing Multimedia directly, Prophet Nigel described how he was led by divine revelation to the studio of Asempa FM, where he witnessed ominous signs.
“This message goes to Multimedia. The Lord opened my eyes and I went straight into the Asempa FM studio. When I got there, I saw that the console had been marked with red cloth. I heard in my spirit as a major prophet of God that the calamity that happened some time ago will be repeated. This is an alert to Multimedia. It’s better to believe and live than to disbelieve and be sorry. Don’t forget that I have prophesied deaths about your establishment for about two to three times and they all came to pass.
He urged the organization to heed his warning, underscoring the potential consequences of ignoring divine guidance.
Prophet Nigel provided specific timelines for when the prophesied incident may occur and offered practical measures to mitigate the threat.
He urged Multimedia and believers in prophecy to take his message seriously, cautioning against skepticism and urging proactive steps such as prayer and fasting.
“When we prophesy, some people who are not deep in the spirit will come and discredit it here and there but I tell you, if you play with this, by August or September, Ghana will not hear good news. I plead with you to pick it up, Asempa FM.
“I’ll encourage Multimedia and anyone that believes in prophecies to go on their knees and pray. They should embark on a 3-day fast and after that, they should look for any man of God to pray for them. Look for any alter and sow a seed. I have been praying for you and I have consulted one or two pastors as well.”
This latest prophecy from Prophet Nigel follows recent events surrounding his prediction regarding the late Deputy Finance Minister, Mr. John Kumah, and underscores the gravity of the spiritual guidance he claims to receive.

The one-week observation ceremony for the late Ejisu Member of Parliament (MP), John Kumah, is scheduled for Thursday, March 28, 2024. It will be held at Ejisu-Onwe in the Ashanti Region.
The announcement was made by Kwasi Owusu Twumasi, spokesperson for the family of the deceased Deputy Finance Minister, during their visit to President Nana Akufo-Addo on Wednesday.
Accompanied by New Patriotic Party (NPP) executives, including General Secretary Frimpong Justin Kodua, the visit to the Jubilee House aimed to formally inform President Akufo-Addo of the MP’s passing.
Expressing his condolences, the President assured the family of his attendance at the ceremony, lamenting John Kumah’s untimely death as a painful loss. He praised the late MP as one of the party’s dynamic youth with leadership potential.
John Kumah passed away on Thursday, March 7, 2024, at the age of 45, leaving behind a wife and six children.
On Saturday, March 9, 2024, a 15-year-old Junior High School (JHS) three pupil from Blessing Academy in Afasebong, Atwima Kwanwoma district, tragically drowned in the Dwahyen River at Takyiman New Site.
The Head Teacher of Blessing Academy, Emmanuel Amankwah, withheld the pupil’s name for unspecified reasons.
According to Amankwah, the pupil sought permission from school authorities to purchase food outside the premises on that Saturday afternoon.
However, upon reaching the bridge spanning the Dwahyen River, the pupil encountered friends engaged in swimming.
Enticed to join them, tragedy unfolded as the pupil drowned, and attempts by his friends to rescue him proved futile, as they also faced difficulties in the water.
Despite their distress, the friends raised an alarm. Masons working nearby rushed to the scene but found the boy had already been swept away by the river.
Efforts by good Samaritans in the evening to retrieve the body proved unsuccessful.
Nana Afriyie Takyi, Nifahene of Atwima, performed a libation ceremony at the river to facilitate the retrieval of the body to the riverbank, a sentiment also confirmed by the Denkyemuoso Police Command during their early Sunday visit.
The lifeless body was later discovered on the riverbank and subsequently transported to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) for a post-mortem examination.
In response to the tragedy, Atwimahene, Nana Antwi Agyei Brempong II, urged parents to ensure their children avoid aimless loitering. He also called on private schools with boarding facilities to prioritize the well-being and safety of the children under their care.

The late Dr. John Kumah, who served as a Member of Parliament for the Ejisu constituency and was affiliated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), passed away on a Thursday afternoon after battling an undisclosed illness for some time.
The sudden demise of the Ejisu MP has sent shockwaves through the community, leaving constituents grappling with the unexpected loss of a respected figure. At the age of 45, Dr. John Kumah leaves behind his wife and six children.
Dominic Danquah, an aide to the late deputy finance minister, John Kumah, has responded to speculations about his boss being poisoned several months ago.
Social media buzzed with claims that the Member of Parliament for Ejisu had fallen victim to poisoning for political motives, primarily fueled by a broadcast from Onua TV’s Captain Smart.
In an interview with Accra-based Class FM following the confirmation of Kumah’s death, Danquah paid tribute to his late boss and expressed bewilderment at the idea of someone intentionally taking his life.
“We weren’t expecting anything like that, so when the news came in, it wasn’t easy. We have not been able to talk, but no matter what we do, no matter the amount of hours we cry or wail, he is not coming back. God knows best.
“So, whoever had a hand in that, we leave that person to God. There is nothing that we can do, God knows the person and God knows John Kumah was a Godfearing man… so, it was like, poisoned? Why? How? What did he do, what has he done?
“Why would anyone think of poisoning or killing John Kumah? But it is finished, whatever they wanted, they can take it… we know how it happened but just as I said, we cannot do anything about it. God knows best,” he stressed.
He went on to address the poisoning speculation, questioning the motives behind such an act and emphasizing Kumah’s virtuous character.
Despite the unfortunate circumstances, Danquah resignedly stated, “Whatever they wanted, they can take it… we know how it happened, but just as I said, we cannot do anything about it. God knows best.”
A spokesperson for the MP also informed the media that Kumah passed away at the Suhum Government Hospital.
An ambulance transporting him to Accra had stopped en route due to his deteriorating condition. Kumah, expected to receive treatment in Germany for an undisclosed ailment, ultimately succumbed at the age of 45, leaving behind a wife and six children.

A verdict has been reached in the case of the tragic shooting incident involving actor Alec Baldwin on the set of the film “Rust.”
Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the weapons handler responsible for loading the gun that discharged and fatally struck cinematographer Halyna Hutchins in 2021, has been found guilty of involuntary manslaughter.
However, Gutierrez-Reed was acquitted of a second charge of tampering with evidence related to the shooting.
The 26-year-old now faces a potential jail sentence of up to 18 months, with her sentencing scheduled for a later date. Meanwhile, Alec Baldwin, aged 65, awaits his own trial for manslaughter, set to take place in July.
Reacting to the verdict, a lawyer representing Baldwin described the outcome of Gutierrez-Reed’s case as “very positive” for his client’s upcoming trial.
The defense argued that Baldwin could not have reasonably anticipated the presence of a live round on set, as the responsibility for firearm safety, maintenance, and ammunition lay with the armorer, Misty Marris.
The tragic incident occurred during a rehearsal on the set of the Western film in New Mexico, when a gun handled by Baldwin discharged a live round, resulting in the death of Halyna Hutchins, aged 42. After three hours of deliberation, the jury delivered the verdict on Wednesday.
Gutierrez-Reed, displaying little emotion, was escorted away by officers following the verdict. As she left, she offered comforting words to her tearful mother, reassuring her that “It’ll be OK,” according to reports from Reuters.
The family of Halyna Hutchins expressed their satisfaction with the verdict, providing some solace in the midst of their profound grief over the loss of their loved one.
Their statement added: “We look forward to the justice system continuing to make sure that everyone else who is responsible for Halyna’s death is required to face the legal consequences for their actions.”
“It means that someone has been held legally criminally culpable for the death of Halyna Hutchins,” Misty Marris told CNN.
Prosecutors said Gutierrez-Reed had failed to ensure the weapon was only loaded with dummy rounds – fake bullets used to look and sound like real ones.
“This case is about constant, never-ending safety failures that resulted in the death of a human being,” prosecutor Kari T Morrissey said during closing arguments on Wednesday.
Gutierrez-Reed was “negligent”, “careless” and “thoughtless” when she failed to notice that live bullets had mixed with dummy rounds in a box of ammunition on set, Ms Morrissey told the jurors.
One of those bullets was in the firearm that was used by Mr Baldwin, prosecutors said.
Prosecutors also presented evidence that Gutierrez-Reed had brought a box of live bullets to the New Mexico film set from her California home. They said these live rounds slowly spread throughout the set over the course of 12 days.
Ms Morrissey said she believed the armourer did not intend to bring live rounds to the set, but rather that Ms Hutchins’ death was a case of tragic negligence.
The prosecutor added that Gutierrez-Reed was more “worried about her career” and less about the victims in the aftermath of the shooting.
Gutierrez-Reed did not testify in the two-week trial, but her lawyer said in closing arguments that prosecutors had failed to prove his client was the sole person responsible for the fatal shooting.
Prosecutors alleged that Gutierrez-Reed neglected to ensure that the firearm was loaded solely with dummy rounds, which are imitation bullets designed to resemble real ones. “This case highlights a series of ongoing safety lapses that led to the tragic loss of life,” stated prosecutor Kari T Morrissey during closing arguments on Wednesday.
Morrissey characterized Gutierrez-Reed’s actions as “negligent,” “careless,” and “reckless,” asserting that she failed to recognize the presence of live ammunition mixed with dummy rounds in a box of ammunition on the set. Prosecutors informed the jurors that one of these live rounds ended up in the firearm used by Alec Baldwin.
Additionally, prosecutors presented evidence suggesting that Gutierrez-Reed had transported a box of live ammunition from her residence in California to the film set in New Mexico, where the live rounds gradually dispersed over the course of 12 days.
While Morrissey believed that the armorer did not intend to introduce live ammunition onto the set, she argued that Halyna Hutchins’ death resulted from tragic negligence.
Morrissey further criticized Gutierrez-Reed for prioritizing her career over the well-being of the victims in the aftermath of the shooting.
During the two-week trial, Gutierrez-Reed opted not to testify. However, her lawyer contended in closing arguments that prosecutors had failed to establish that his client bore sole responsibility for the fatal incident.
“The [ammunition] boxes don’t matter, because we don’t know what was in them three or four days before,” her lawyer, Jason Bowles told the jury, arguing his client did not know that there were real bullets on set.
Mr Bowles also blamed Mr Baldwin, arguing that he had “gone off-script” when he pointed the gun at film crew.
“It was not in the script for Mr Baldwin to point the weapon,” he said. “She didn’t know that Mr Baldwin was going to do what he did.”
He vowed to file an appeal.
Trial witnesses included the film’s director, Joel Souza, who was also shot in the incident but survived.
Mr Souza said he remembered looking up at Gutierrez-Reed after he was shot, and hearing her repeatedly say: “I’m sorry, Joel.”
The jury was also shown emotional and distressing footage of the aftermath of the shooting, when the Colt .45 revolver held by Mr Baldwin went off.
It included a video that appeared to show Ms Hutchins’ final moments, with paramedics frantically trying to save her life.
Gutierrez-Reed was also found not guilty of evidence tampering stemming from accusations that she attempted to dispose of a small bag of narcotics after the shooting.
Last year, the movie’s cast and crew finished filming in tribute to Ms Hutchins, with her husband serving as an executive producer.
A nurse identified as Alberta has met her untimely death allegedly at the hands of her fiancé in at town called Akyem Brenase, in the Eastern Region. The suspect, whose name has not been disclosed, reportedly struck Alberta with a club after accusing her of infidelity.
According to reports, Alberta and the suspect had been in a relationship for some time before the unfortunate incident occurred. Details emerging from the investigation suggest that this was not the first instance of violence in their relationship. Last year, the suspect allegedly poisoned Alberta, but she was saved by doctors at Akyem Ayirebi.
The sequence of events leading to Alberta’s death began when she fell ill recently and sought her boyfriend’s assistance in caring for her. Trusting him to provide support during her illness, Alberta invited the suspect to her home.
However, unbeknownst to Alberta, the suspect had allegedly devised a sinister plan to harm her. Instead of offering care and support, the suspect reportedly confronted Alberta, accusing her of being unfaithful. In a fit of rage, he is said to have struck her with a club, resulting in her immediate death.
The tragic incident took place in Breman, a community within the Ofoase Ayirebi constituency. According to Rev. Thomas Odame Bempong, who reported the story on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM, the suspect remained at the scene beside Alberta’s lifeless body for nearly 24 hours following the alleged assault.

Investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas has asserted that revealing his identity to former Ghana Football Association (GFA) president Kwasi Nyantakyi, against whom he is expected to testify, would jeopardize his security and be akin to “signing his death warrant.”
Anas, known for his #Number 12 Exposé that exposed bribery and corruption in Ghana’s football, highlighted the potential risks to his safety.
The trial, initiated on June 29, 2021, centers on Nyantakyi’s alleged involvement in corrupt practices revealed in Anas’ exposé. The Principal State Attorney (PSA) stated that Anas refused disclosure due to safety concerns, emphasizing the appeal of the court’s decision.
Principal State Attorney Duffie Prempeh informed the court that Anas expressed concerns about compromising his personal safety by disclosing his identity to the accused and their counsel.
“My Lady respectfully, we are expected to bring our witness today, (Wednesday February 28),” the PSA told the Court.
“However, following your ruling on our application regarding the mode of testimony of our witness, Anas Aremeyaw Anas, the Attorney General extended an invitation to the witness to avail himself for pre-trial conference and ultimately to present his testimony in Court,” she said.
The Principal State Attorney also told the Court that, the Investigative Journalist said, disclosing his identity to testify for the Prosecution will amount to signing his death warrant.
“My Lady, in response to our letter, Anas indicated that given the danger to his personal safety, it will not be proper for him to disclose his identity to the Accused persons and their counsel.
Anas argued that, given the nature of his work, revealing his identity would be tantamount to signing his death warrant.
He cited the unfortunate fate of his colleague, Ahmed Suale, who was fatally shot after an engagement with the law office.
Anas requested an appeal against the court’s decision, but the appeal is still pending.
The PSA pleaded with the court for additional time to pursue the appeal in the interest of justice.
While the defense called for the criminal suit’s dismissal due to a lack of prosecution progress, the court granted the prosecution until April to address the pending appeal.
The presiding judge, Justice Marie-Louise Simmons, expressed reluctance to strike out the case immediately, waiting for the response from the Court of Appeal regarding the appeal against the ruling.
The court’s decision grants the prosecution until April to make meaningful progress; otherwise, the accused persons will be discharged.

The 15-year-old student passed away on Monday, February 5, 2024, after suffering from severe stomach pains.
According to sources within the school, it is alleged that the student was denied necessary medical attention by the school nurse, who reportedly accused her of feigning illness. Unfortunately, by the time she was eventually rushed to the hospital, it was too late, and she had already passed away.
The body of the deceased student has been transferred to the Tetteh Quarshie Memorial Hospital pending autopsy, while the police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her untimely demise.
Miss Danso, an aunt of the deceased, expressed the family’s anguish in an interview with Kasapa News, stating that they would pursue legal action against the school if it is found responsible for their daughter’s death. She emphasized that the school authorities should have ensured that the sick girl received immediate medical attention, especially given the close proximity of the hospital to the school premises.
“We’ll sue the school if after investigation it emerges that the school was guilty leading to our daughter’s death,” Miss Danso asserted. “Because, the Heads in the school should have ensured the sick girl was taken to the hospital for treatment if the school’s sick bay could not take care of her.”

“It’s not humane, if they want to keep the death penalty at least they should die in some form of dignity. Hanging is not a very pleasant way to go to heaven or hell. The trio is presumed to have succumbed to the effects of a fumigant during an extended stay at their grandparent’s residence in Asawase.
Disinfection against Bedbugs
On December 28, 2023, the three siblings who lived at Parkoso, a suburb of the Asokore Mampong municipality with their mother, visited their grandmother for the Christmas holidays.
While preparing a room for their stay, their uncle, Anthony Frans, sprayed a fumigant, identified as Topstoxin Fumigation tablet, also known as ‘bomb’, to disinfect the room against bed bugs.
But the three siblings, together with their 66-year-old grandmother, Ekua Gyaabena, were found unconscious and rushed to the Manhyia Government Hospital the next morning after sleeping in the room for the night.
Magdalene and Christian however died upon arrival at the hospital, while their grandmother and other sibling, Judith, were hospitalized.
Judith later passed on while on admission.
The incident has since thrown the community into anguish and grief.
“I was informed about the incident by a friend in my electoral area while on a visit to the hospital. I rushed to the ward and realised two of the victims had passed on.
“The grandmother and the eldest niece were also on admission at the Emergency Centre of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for further treatment. I assisted them, and we came to the police station, and the uncle of the deceased who applied the chemical was arrested and detained,” recounted Mathew Amissah, Assembly Member for the Asawase East Electoral area.

Nigerian Police Officer, Cosmos Ugwu met a tragic fate as a 23-year-old woman reportedly entered an Imo State police station and, according to reports, shot him fatally.
On Tuesday, December 26, Ugwu was allegedly shot by his supposed girlfriend, identified as Amanda Uchechi Ugo, a native of Ahiazu Mbaise Local Government Area in Imo State.
The incident occurred around 6:30 pm on Boxing Day at the Ezinihitte Area Command, causing officers on duty to seek cover upon hearing three gunshots from Ugwu’s room.
According to sources, officers later discovered Corporal Ugwu lying in a pool of blood with three gunshot wounds to his chest and left hand. He was swiftly taken to Evergreen Hospital in Ezinihitte, where he was pronounced dead by the attending doctor.
“When police officers ran into the room later to see what was going on, they found Corporal Ugwu lying in a pool of his blood. The girl shot him three times in his chest and his left hand. He was rushed immediately to Evergreen Hospital in Ezinihitte, where he was pronounced dead by the doctor on duty.”
The reports suggest a serious altercation between the deceased and his girlfriend in their police station room.
During the confrontation, the girl reportedly seized Ugwu’s rifle, pulled the trigger, and shot him three times.
“It was like a movie,” the source added.
“Nobody knows what went wrong between the two, but how the girl was able to use a police rifle successfully is still a surprise to many. Maybe, Ugwu was the one who taught her.”
Described as a scene from a movie, the source expressed surprise at how the girl successfully used a police rifle, speculating that Ugwu might have taught her.
The deceased officer’s remains were taken to the Obizi mortuary, and an ongoing investigation is in progress.

A 27-year-old man, Kwaku Agyei, has been apprehended for reportedly fatally stabbing his friend’s father at New Sekyire, near Kronom-Cement in the Ashanti Region.
The victim, a 47-year-old man identified as Efo, was allegedly stabbed with a knife by the suspect, leading to his death.
According to an eyewitness, the incident occurred on Sunday, December 24, 2023, following a previous altercation that had been separated.
The suspect allegedly attacked the deceased after an initial fight was diffused, resulting in the tragic event.
Hon Joyce Osei Assibey, Assembly Member for New Sekyire Electoral Area, provided details about the incident, stating that the suspect had confronted his friend at the deceased’s house.
Despite efforts to mediate and end the dispute, the suspect reportedly stabbed the victim with a concealed knife during his departure.
The family discovered the attack only when one of the victim’s daughters observed him in a pool of blood outside the house.
The injured man was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead.
The police have arrested the suspect, Kwaku Agyei, who is currently cooperating with ongoing investigations.
On the onset of December, during the renewed hostilities in Gaza, the family of five-month-old Palestinian infant Muhammad Hani al-Zahar experienced a tragic loss.
In the wake of this heartbreaking event, images circulated online showing Muhammad’s mother and grandfather cradling his lifeless body outside a hospital.
These poignant scenes, however, were met with skepticism on social media, where numerous users incorrectly asserted that Muhammad was not a real child but a doll.
This misinformation gained further traction when the Jerusalem Post, a prominent Israeli newspaper, published an article featuring an image of Muhammad in a post-mortem state, erroneously claiming it as evidence of him being a doll.
Following significant criticism, the Jerusalem Post retracted the article and acknowledged the mistake on X (formerly Twitter), citing unreliable sources for the report.
In a separate incident, a video of Israeli siblings Rotem Mathias, 16, and his sisters, Shakked and Shir, became widely shared.
The video emerged after the tragic death of their parents, who were killed by Hamas gunmen on October 7th while seeking shelter in their home near the Gaza border.
The footage, which included edited excerpts from the siblings’ interviews with American media outlets ABC and CNN, was misleadingly used to promote the false narrative that they were “crisis actors” pretending to grieve and struggling to suppress laughter during the interviews.
In the digital landscape of the Israel-Gaza conflict, the proliferation of social media has become a battleground for divergent perspectives, with denial of atrocities and human suffering taking center stage in the online discourse.
One prominent term contributing to this phenomenon is “Pallywood,” a portmanteau of “Palestine” and “Hollywood.” Proponents of this term allege that staged or fake footage, featuring Palestinian “crisis actors” posing as genuine civilian casualties, is regularly disseminated online to shape public opinion and mislead global media. According to a BBC Verify analysis, the term “Pallywood” has experienced a significant surge in mentions on X over the past decade.
During previous escalations of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in 2014, 2018, and 2021, “Pallywood” consistently peaked at either 9,500 or 13,000 mentions in a single month on X. However, after the Hamas attack on October 7, the term reached a peak of 220,000 mentions in November.
The analysis also revealed that among those sharing the term “Pallywood” on social media platforms, including X, Facebook, and Instagram, were Israeli officials, celebrities, and popular bloggers from Israel and the United States.
Conversely, supporters of the Palestinian cause lack a singular term to deny atrocities committed by Hamas on October 7 in Israel. However, posts making such claims routinely garner millions of views on social media, falsely asserting that Hamas did not kill civilians on that day or exaggerating the scale of civilian casualties. Some go as far as making unfounded claims that most victims were actually killed by the Israel Defense Forces, not Hamas.
Experts specializing in reconciliation efforts express concern that the viral dissemination of disinformation, which denies the suffering of the other side, can be dehumanizing. They fear that this may have lasting impacts on the prospects of rebuilding relations between the affected communities in the long term.
“The biggest risks, I think, are the erosion of trust and the erosion of empathy,” said Harriet Vickers, programme lead at the Tim Parry and Johnathan Ball Foundation for Peace, a charity that supports victims of conflict, political violence and acts of terror.
“It undermines the ability to even begin approaching reconciliation efforts.”
She added that false narratives and dehumanising rhetoric can also “have a profound effect beyond those that are directly impacted by violence, and can actually further the hurt that is being done to those individuals”.
False narratives about “crisis actors” or atrocity denial are not new to those who study disinformation.
The concept of “crisis actors” in particular – that is people who pretend or are paid to act out some particular tragedy or disaster – has been popular among promoters of conspiracy theories for years.
But the volume of dehumanising rhetoric posted during this war has surprised even those who deal with such content on a daily basis.
Eliot Higgins, the founder of the investigative website Bellingcat that has covered the wars in Syria and Ukraine in recent years, says the volume of disinformation in the current Israeli-Gaza war is “unique to this conflict”.
“I’ve seen the kind of same intensity of toxicity and vile responses and disinformation, the way they treat women and children and that kind of stuff, with Syria, with Ukraine and so many different topics – just there are more people doing it,” he told the BBC.

Mr Higgins added that because many people have had very strong opinions about either side of the conflict for years, “there are more people who are sharing stuff because it is resonating with them emotionally”.
“They don’t really care if it’s true or not, it just feels true to them.”
Back in November, a video showing makeup and fake blood being applied to a child actor’s face was posted on X by Ofir Gendelman, the Israeli prime minister’s spokesperson to the Arab world.
“See for yourselves how they fake injuries and evacuating ‘injured’ civilians, all in front of the cameras. Pallywood gets busted again,” Mr Gendelman said in a post that was viewed millions of times before being deleted.
The video was, in fact, behind-the-scenes footage from a 45-second Lebanese film made in tribute to Gazans and posted online in October.
Director Mahmoud Ramzi, who took to Instagram to personally debunk the false claim made about his film, told the BBC that in the end, the misinformation might have backfired, with the controversy helping his film reach a much bigger audience.
The BBC approached Mr Gendelman for comment but he has not responded.

Others have expressed concern for the real people who find themselves in the middle of online disinformation wars. James Longman, the ABC correspondent who interviewed Rotem and his sisters, says watching Rotem recount the death of his parents brought him and his cameraman to tears.
“He was in tears, his sister was in tears, their grandfather, who was with us. Our cameraman, the hospital porters, the nurses, the doctors, and I was in tears. I mean all of us sitting there listening to what he had to say,” he told the BBC.
“It was extraordinary to hear him say it, to watch his reactions as he explained what had happened.”
Mr Longman said he was shocked when he saw false claims about the siblings being shared online and took to X to debunk it. His post was shared widely, and led to at least one of the viral messages about the siblings being subsequently deleted by the person who posted it.
“But it doesn’t make it any less horrible for Rotem’s family,” Mr Longman said
