  • Sammy Awuku’s mass endorsement causes Akuapem North MP to abandon seat, eyes Okaikwei North

Sammy Awuku’s mass endorsement causes Akuapem North MP to abandon seat, eyes Okaikwei North

In an unexpected twist, incumbent Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, Oheneba Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah-Adjei, has made the decision to shift her focus to the Okaikwei North constituency.

Sources close to the MP suggest that this move stems from a strained relationship with her current constituents, who have shown strong support for Sammy Awuku.

Sammy Awuku, the Director General of the National Lottery Authority of Ghana, has gained significant endorsement from the people of Okaikwei North, leading to speculation about his candidacy in the upcoming elections.

Although Oheneba Dokua Asiamah-Adjei is from Akropong in the Akuapem North Constituency of the Eastern Region of Ghana, her decision to change constituencies reflects a desire for a fresh start and new opportunities.

During an engagement with the media, Samuel Awuku, the Director-General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), expressed his ongoing support for Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah-Adjei, the current Member of Parliament for Akuapem North Constituency.

He mentioned that his final decision regarding his own candidacy would depend on the official opening of nominations by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Mr. Awuku emphasized the importance of consulting with his appointing authority and assessing the prevailing circumstances before making his intentions known.

“I believe in thorough preparation before entering any election. I listen, ask questions, and evaluate the grounds for myself. If the conditions are not favorable, I won’t waste my resources,” Awuku said in the interview.

  • Reshuffling enhances efficient governance – Former Sunyani West MP

Former Member of Parliament (MP) for Sunyani West Constituency, Hon. Kwadwo Adjei Darko has emphasized the need for presidents to reshuffle their ministers.

According to him, for a government to be more efficient, there is a need for reshuffling. “A minister may be good at a particular ministry; however, moving him from one ministry to the other will ensure efficient and effective governance.”

He said this in an interview with Suncity Radio, a Sunyani-based radio station in the Bono Region of Ghana, following a statement made by former President John Agyekum Kufour in an interaction with the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) at his residence in Peduase on Monday, December 5, 2022.

Mr. Adjei Darko added that the president has the right and authority to reshuffle his ministers. Meanwhile, there have been several calls from some Ghanaians for President Akufo-Addo to reshuffle his ministers.

However, the president insisted that he evaluates the work of his ministers consistently and that many of his appointees have discharged their duties excellently.

  • Everybody will soon leave Ghana for Togo if you don’t act’ – Ato Forson on Censure Motion

Member of Parliament for Ajumako Enyan-Esiam Constituency in the Central Region of Ghana, Cassiel Ato Forson has asked members of parliament to, as a matter of urgency, act to ensure the removal of the finance minister from office to save the country.

The ranking member on the finance committee of the parliament alleged that, due to the mismanagement of the economy by the finance minter Ken Ofori Atta, Ghanaians are leaving the country for neighbouring countries.

“Mr, Speaker, it should be noted that if you are to meet an average Ghanaian or ordinary Ghanaian, their wish is to leave the country, sadly, their wish is to leave the country.

Mr Speaker, if we do not act now, we will wake up one day and we will not have constituents, Mr speaker almost everybody will leave our country to Togo and we will have no country if you fail to act,” he said.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP said this in his submission on the floor of parliament when the house debated the report of an ad hoc committee that looked into a vote censure that was before the Minister of Finance, by the Minority.

The censure motion against Ken Ofori-Atta is grounded, among other things, on accusations of financial recklessness, conflict of interest, and gross mismanagement of the economy against the minister.

Meanwhile, the minority in parliament is confident that the motion against the minister will succeed.

  • Why use misreported data IMF rejected? – Egyapa Mercer to Minority

The NPP MP for Sekondi Constituency in the Western Region, Andrew Kofi Egyapa Mercer, has said that the Minority in Parliament is rehashing old and debunked allegations against the Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta.

Mr Mercer said the allegations of misreporting were first raised in May 2020, and rejected by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as being untrue.

He, therefore, wondered why the Minority would use the same issues as bases for a motion of censure against Mr Ofori-Atta.

The MP made the statement at the first hearing of the Ad Hoc Committee on the motion of censure brought against the Finance Minister.

Egyapa Mercer’s claim was also in response to Dr Cassiel Ato Forson’s presentation which was centred on the misreporting of the fiscal deficit, fiscal treatment of expenditures above or below the line and general public sector accounting.

The MP said the past Country Representative of the IMF, Dr Albert Touna Mama, had debunked the allegations on Joy News File in May when he was called to respond to them when first raised by Dr Forson.

“Indeed, the said Dr Touna Mama was the Country Representative of the IMF. He was called to respond to allegations on misreporting of figures that the Finance Ministry had presented to IMF and he said all the figures were known by the IMF and therefore it was untrue that there was misreporting,” Mr Mercer said.

Meanwhile, in May 2020, Dr Touna Mama said that whilst his outfit tried “as much as possible to stay out of debates” they felt compelled to clarify statements made by Fact Check Ghana concerning the $1 billion IMF COVID-19 relief fund to the government.

Fact Check Ghana, an affiliate of the Media Foundation for West Africa, through its website, stated that government of Ghana presented data to the IMF which was different from figures in the annual budgets for 2018 and 2019.

But speaking on Joy FM’s News File Programme in May 2020, the IMF Country Representative to Ghana, Dr. Albert Touna Mama suggested that Fact Check Ghana misrepresented the facts because the government was not the one that presented the figures that the IMF published in its statements as Fact Check Ghana reported.

The IMF Country Director explained that the difference in figures was as a result of a difference in the methodology of calculation, adding that the figure in fiscal deficit in their statement was a figure they generated themselves from the data government presented to them, having added financial and energy sector payments in line with their methodology, which is different from government’s methodology.

Earlier, Mr Ofori-Atta, asked the committee for a fair hearing.

He asked that he be furnished with the documents that they intended to rely upon, to execute the motion of censure initiated against him.

The minister’s lawyer, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, said the rules of natural justice and fair hearing required that the accused was not only heard but also necessarily be furnished with the documents that formed the bases of the allegations made against him.

  • 2021 was a challenging year – Adwoa Safo speaks on return to Ghana

Member of Parliament (MP) for Dome Kwabenya Constituency, Sarah Adwoa Safo, is back in Ghana after close to a year in the United States of America.

She is back after staying away from her duties as a Member of Parliament for the period amidst criticisms from some colleague MPs and executives of the New Patriotic Party.

Sarah Adwoa Safo was spotted at a Presbyterian Church in her Constituency on Sunday November 6, 2022 where she was accompanied by some family and friends to thank God for his protection of her life.

Speaking to the Congregation, Adwoa Safo said she was grateful to God for protecting her life and that of her family stressing that “last year was a very challenging year”.

The Member of Parliament who doubled as Gender and Social Protection Minister was sacked by the President of Ghana after she failed to show up for her responsibilities.

Rumors were rife that she had left the country because she did not want the Gender, Children, and Social Protection Minister but rather wanted to remain the Deputy Majority leader in Parliament; a position which had been given to Alex Afenyo Markin.

Meanwhile, after referring her absence from Parliament to the privileges committee of Parliament, the Speaker of Parliament said he investigated their work and was not satisfied with it and has since referred it to the floor of Parliament for a decision to be taken.

  • Annul Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency polls; it was rigged – Some NDC members demand

Some aggrieved National Democratic Congress (NDC) executives and aspirants in the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency have accused the incumbent constituency leadership of the party of conniving with other agencies to rig the just-ended constituency election.

They are pointing accusing fingers at the New Patriotic Party (NPP) constituency chairman, the Electoral Commission, NDC electoral committee and police for bullying their way through the election.

The members claim the elections were conducted in an unfair and unjust manner to enable the current leadership to stay in power.

“Some executives are threatening to withdraw their services, others are threatening to resign from their positions. We will not allow their overwhelming shouts of change to be silenced,” said Joshua Essel, one of the disgruntled aspirants.

Speaking at a press conference, Joshua Essel assured party members in the constituency that steps will be taken to annul the results.

“As leaders who believe in the rule of law, we have taken action and addressed the appropriate quarters. We seek redress and the total annulment of the elections because it was nothing but fraud. The election was fraught with many irregularities, illegalities and thievery”.

  • Constituency Watch: Tamale Central gets fair share of national cake

Tamale Central is one of the constituencies that have received their fair share of the national cake.

Without doubt an urban constituency, it has witnessed significant development since its creation in 2004.

The benefits for Tamale Central, which is our focus for this week, include an interchange, a number of roads, new school blocks and agricultural support.

With a voter population of about 100,000, per the 2020 general election, the Tamale Central Constituency in the Tamale metropolis is bordered by the Tamale South Constituency to the south, the Tamale North Constituency to the north and the Sagnarigu Constituency to the west.

Carved out of the then Gukpegu/Sabongida Constituency in 2004, Tamale Central is one of the largest and fastest developing constituencies in the Northern Region.

    Voting pattern

Since its creation, the constituency, one of the 18 constituencies in the region, has politically become the traditional seat of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), as it has since been voting for the NDC in both parliamentary and presidential elections.

Although the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has never won the seat, it made some advances in the 2020 general election, garnering about 44.83 per cent of the total valid votes cast.

Its current Member of Parliament (MP) is Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, who won the seat on the ticket of the NDC in 2020. He is the third MP of the constituency.

His predecessor, Inusah Fuseini, who was in Parliament for three terms, from 2006, voluntarily bowed out of contesting the seat for the fourth time.

Alhaji Fuseini became an MP through a by-election in 2006 after the then incumbent, Wayo Seini, defected from the NDC to the NPP.

Although it is considered a traditional seat of the NDC, the incumbent MP had a tough time slugging it out with the NPP parliamentary candidate, Dr Ibrahim Anyars Imoro, who pulled a surprise by garnering 44.83 per cent of the valid votes, the highest votes polled by an NPP candidate in the history of the constituency.

    Demographics

The constituency has a mix of both formal and informal workers, made up of traders, teachers, civil and public servants, farmers, nurses, security officers, among others.

It is also a busy constituency, with fever-pitch economic activities that draw hundreds of people from far and near on a daily basis.

Prominent markets and business centres in the Tamale metropolis, such as the Aboabo Market, bus terminals and a number of banks can all be found in the constituency.

    Developments in detail

The constituency is a beneficiary of the Tamale Interchange, the first to be constructed in the northern part of the country.

The structure, which has been dedicated to the memory of Naa Gbewaa, the Founder of the Mole/Dagbon Kingdom, was constructed to ease traffic congestion and give a facelift to the metropolis.

The two-tier interchange, which was opened to traffic in March 2022 by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, formed part of what the government described as its commitment to address congestion in urban centres and also help improve travel times on major arterial roads.

The Naa Gbewaa Interchange links the road from the Dakpema Palace through the ‘Point 7’ road, the Central Taxi Rank and the Central Market Intersection to the Sakasaka Road.

    Aayalolo buses

Just last Monday, the state-owned commercial bus service, popularly known as Aayalolo bus services, was launched in Tamale to boost intra-city transport in the area.

The bus transport service is set to start operation with five 40-seater buses plying designated routes, much of which can be found in the Tamale Central Constituency.

The areas include the Interchange to the Tamale Polytechnic, Point 7 to Vittin and the Anbariya Senior High School, P.K. Gombillah to Savelugu, Quality First to the UDS Tamale Campus and Aboabo Commercial Bank to Nyankpala.

    Roads

A number of road projects have been completed in the constituency, with others at various stages of completion.

So far, about 40 kilometres (km) of roads have been asphalted within the Tamale Central constituency, out of the 100km earmarked by the government to be constructed in the Tamale metropolis and the Sagnarigu municipality by 2024.

During a recent tour, the Daily Graphic observed that some road networks and drainage systems in Nyanshegu, Tishegu, Aboabo, Zogbeli, Lamankara Gbewaa and other areas were under construction.

    Challenges/facelift

In spite of the significant infrastructural development, parts of the constituency, such as the Warizehi and the Agric/Mohiyabihi electoral areas, are still grappling with poor roads, inadequate drains, bridges, perennial flooding and faulty streetlights.

Other challenges include congestion, insecurity and youth unemployment.

Some residents who spoke with the Daily Graphic — Adam Hardi, Saani Mustapha and Hamida Salifu – said in spite of the challenges facing the constituency, it had witnessed significant development in the past five years.

They mentioned the construction of the interchange and a number of link roads, which they noted had given a major facelift to the metropolis.

The Assembly Member for the Agric/Mohiyabihi Electoral Area, Salifu Mohammed Mutala, said the main challenge was the poor drainage system which contributed to the perennial flooding in the area.

He said aside from a mechanised borehole and a clinic that had been constructed in the area by the MP, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, the area had not benefited from any government intervention for some time now.

Mr Mutala, therefore, appealed to the authorities to turn their attention to the electoral area and help fix the drainage, roads and other developmental challenges.

    Opinion leaders

Some opinion leaders — Sumani Alhassan, Yusif Danaba and Ibrahim Adam — commended the government for initiating some projects which were impacting on the lives of the people in the constituency.

They also urged the government and the assembly to decongest the central business district, which had been taken over by hawkers and people who had erected unauthorised structures.

    Wanton encroachment

The Metropolitan Chief Executive for Tamale, Sule Salifu, lamented the wanton encroachment on public school lands in the metropolis and said if not checked, the practice could pose a threat to future development projects on school premises.

He indicated that the assembly was taking stringent measures to reclaim and protect all public school lands that had been encroached upon by some private developers and individuals.

    MP’s intervention

The MP for the constituency, Alhaji Murtala Mohammed, told the Daily Graphic that when he assumed office, he undertook an assessment to identify the pressing needs of the constituents.

He mentioned the drilling of 20 mechanised boreholes, the construction of an Astro turf, clinics, payment of fees of about 20 medical students, organising extra classes for students, among others, as some of the projects he had undertaken in the constituency.

“One of my main focus areas is education, so I have decided to pay the fees for 10 medical students each year. Last year I started with 10 students and this year the same,” he said.

“I have also been organising extra classes for Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates. I started with about 1,200 students and this year about 1,700 students have benefited,” Alhaji Mohammed said.

Aside from that, the MP indicated that he had supported a number of farmers with farm inputs and funds to improve on their farming activities.
Alhaji Mohammed, who is a former Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, expressed concern about the poor road network and drainage systems in parts of the constituency.

He pledged to continue to use his influence to lobby the authorities to work on the roads and drains.

“I have also been embarking on regular visitations to understand the needs and challenges of the people so that I can know how to use my share of the common fund and also lobby for projects for them,” he added.

    Other projects

Aside from the road infrastructure, the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly has been installing streetlights in some communities and principal roads, including those in Tamale Central, to improve night visibility and help fight crime in the metropolis.

Recently, it installed over 400 streetlights in areas such as Aboabo, the central business district, Zogbeli and Lamankara.

It has also been embarking on a decongestion exercise within the central business district to clear traders who have erected unauthorised structures along the pavements.

The move forms part of efforts to ensure sanity and the free flow of traffic in the city.

    Poor performance

While acknowledging some of the infrastructural projects witnessed in the area, the Constituency Communications Officer of the NDC, Umar Abdul-Razak, said the government had performed abysmally in the constituency.

He said even in opposition, the MP had been able to initiate more life-changing projects than what the government had done in the past six years.

As Election 2020 approaches, one of the constituencies to watch is Tamale Central.

This is mainly because of the inroads the NPP made in the last elections, closing the gap from previously landslide victories the NDC chalked up.

Therefore, any slip on anybody’s part can tilt the outcome. We will keep an eye on happenings in the Tamale Central Constituency.

  • Danfa-Otinibi road yet to be fixed months after Madina MP’s protest

The Member of Parliament for the Madina Constituency, Francis-Xavier Sosu, October last year led residents of La Nkwantangang-Madina Municipality to demonstrate over the bad roads on the Ayi-Mensah, Danfa, and Otinibi stretch.

The protest which was to call for immediate attention and work on the road almost led to the Madina MP’s arrest by the Ghana Police Service.

In an account by Lawyer Sosu, he narrated how he was manhandled adding that his car was also damaged by the police in their attempt to arrest him over the protest.

Despite all the efforts and cries by the affected communities and their legislator in getting their roads fixed, authorities are yet to commence work on the busy stretch.

According to people living in Danfa and its environs, the terrible state of their road is affecting lives and business, especially with the current heavy downpour.

In a news report by GhanaWeb’s Paula Amma Broni, residents pleaded with authorities not to politicize the construction work but instead deploy a constructor to start work on the deplorable road.

Rosemond Amasa, a resident of Danfa highlighted the effect their road has had on business.

“Our roads are in terrible condition. The rains have even worsened the situation. It has affected business, especially with the heavy downpour. I am not exaggerating; you should see it for yourself. We need the government’s support now more than ever,” she said.

Lord Dzokoto also admonished the Madina MP not to give up on his effort in getting them help despite the many failed attempts.

“This used to be a preferred route for the people living in Amamfrom, Oyibi and its environs. They no longer use this road due to its bad state. There is always traffic on the Amamfrom road. I hope my request gets to the president, come and fix the Danfa road. It is terrible,” he told GhanaWeb.

  • NPP Chair accuses Ellembelle DCE of taking GHC70K bribe to aid galamsey

The governing New Patriotic Party(NPP) Constituency Chairman for Ellembele, Samson Ndoli has accused the District Chief Executive for the area, Kwasi Bonzoh of collecting GHC70,000 bribe to facilitate illegal mining in the area.

In an interview, he accused the DCE of taking the said amount from some illegal miners who had been arrested and allowed them back to the mining site to continue with their further destruction of the land.

“The party held a meeting in our office which was attended by the DCE where we agreed that illegal miners in our area are destroying our water bodies and so we need to arrest them. We undertook the operation to arrest them led by the DCE during which 7 excavators were seized and five persons arrested. Three days after their arrested, we were informed that they’ve been released after the DCE held a meeting with them where he collected GHC70,000 allowing their machines to go back to the site. We were not happy with that news and so we went to the site the following day where we took videos. We realized that the illegal miners had gone further in the destruction of the land.”

He continued: “We then went to inform the District Police Commander that those who were arrested have gone back to the site. We moved to the scene with the Police and the media where we saw them working. Many of them escaped but three were arrested, we seized their equipment and fuel and took them to the police station. In the evening, the DCE’s aide came and bailed out the suspects. One of the DCE’s boys told us that if we arrest the miners ten times, they will be released ten times because the DCE is the Chairman of the DISEC. After the media publication, the DCE decided to cover up, he teamed with the galamseyers to do a press conference. What we find unfortunate is that even if you the DCE will release them to go back to the site, he needed to inform us (Executives) because we took the decision together. The DCE should have even commended us for arresting the suspects but he rather called the Secretary and asked him what locus he had to lead police officers to go to a mining site.”

He added: The party birthed the government. So if the government introduces a policy, the party must stand firmly and back that policy.”

In September 2022, Police arrested the DCE, Kwasi Bonzo days after his personal assistant, and one other person were placed under police investigation for the disappearance of two mining excavators in the district.

The arrest ensued when the DCE caught wind that the police had recovered an excavator similar to what had been reported missing. He moved in to supposedly identify the earthmoving equipment in the early hours of the day.

Reports indicate that the DCE was ignored when he came in to try and verify the machines’ ownership. He then followed up to Ayisakrom in the district where he was said to have confronted the security officials resulting in a scuffle.

He was arrested and transported to the headquarters in Sekondi.

  • Aspiring NDC Constituency Chairman paralyses a day before vetting

An aspiring Constituency Chairman for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Abura Asebu Kwamankese Constituency in the Central Region has become paralyzed a day before appearing before a vetting Committee in the Constituency.

Information gathered revealed that the aspirant, Vicent Koomsom, 24 hours prior to the vetting exercise suddenly lost the strength in his legs as soon as he got down from his vehicle.

The incident has thrown family and friends into a state of shock as they believe there’s been some spiritual orchestration because he’d been very strong and active all this while.

He’s said to have driven his own vehicle to where he became paralyzed.

Vicent Koomsom was eventually disqualified from the Chairmanship race for unknown reasons. He later filed an appeal to the Regional Vetting Committee but his disqualification was still upheld.

According to his supporters, the man has helped the party in the Abura Asebu Kwamankese Constituency and it’s time he should be allowed to lead the party to wrestle power in the 2024 general election.

They warned that the NDC will lose in the constituency if Vicent Koomsom is denied the opportunity to contest the position.

He appeared at the NDC Central Regional Office in a wheelchair to defend his disqualification but the earlier decision was not overturned and consequently filed another petition yet to be studied.

Vicent Koomsom’s supporters have accused former Deputy Minister of Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu who was the 2020 Parliamentary candidate for the area of having a hand in his disqualification.

However, Felix Kwakye Ofosu has vehemently denied that accusation saying the vetting Committee used the party’s rules and regulations in the discharge of their duty and was fair to all aspirants that appeared before them.

  • Devise new strategies to solve Wa killings – MP to IGP

Member of Parliament (MP) for the Wa Central Constituency in the Upper West Region, Dr. Rasheed Pelpuo has urged that the police to come up with initiatives to help curb the recent killings in the municipality.

According to him, the police’s present tactics and procedures are failing to address the of ritual killings in the municipality.

Dr. Pelpuo is also of the view that the identity of people who out of the blue exhibit wealth in the municipality must be known to help unravel the situation of alleged ritual killings.
