Jordan Ayew picks Christian Atsu as the best teammate he has ever played with

Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew has praised the late Christian Atsu, calling him the best teammate he has ever played with.

Atsu, who won the Best Player award at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), sadly lost his life in 2023 after being trapped under rubble during a massive earthquake in Turkey, where he was playing football.

When asked to name the best player he has played alongside, Ayew immediately mentioned Atsu without any doubt.

“The best player I’ve ever played with, unfortunately, is no longer with us, and that’s Christian [Atsu]. I played with Muntari and Essien,” he told Joy Sports.

“Asamoah [Gyan] and Andre [Ayew] are also up there, but I’ll go with Atsu. He didn’t get enough plaudits for how good he was on the field,” he added.

Jordan Ayew has been in excellent form as captain of the Black Stars, guiding Ghana to consecutive victories in the FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

The team delivered an impressive 5-0 win against Chad before securing a 3-0 triumph over Madagascar. Ayew played a key role in both matches, contributing to five goals—scoring once and providing four assists.

With Ghana leading Group I with 15 points, three ahead of second-placed Comoros, Ayew will be determined to keep the team’s winning streak alive.

Before returning to World Cup qualifiers in September against Chad and Mali, the Black Stars will take part in a four-nation tournament in England.

A year after his passing, Newcastle United, where Atsu made a significant impact during his career, travelled to Ghana to document the life of their former player.

The documentary begins with Atsu’s twin sisters reflecting on their humble upbringing, growing up alongside their ten other siblings in a village in Ada Foah.

It vividly portrays Atsu’s journey from his rural roots to the bustling streets of Accra, where he first showcased his football talents with FC Peace before joining Cheetar FC in 2008 in Awutu Senya.

His former manager, Hay Yartey, shares stories of Atsu’s resilience, highlighting how he overcame challenges and earned a move abroad to Porto in Portugal.

“Drowning deep in my mind” – Christian Atsu’s wife sings a year on after her husband’s demise

Widow of the late Christian Atsu Marie Claire Rupio, has created a song as a tribute to her husband, who passed away in 2023.

Titled ‘Lotus’, the song is a deeply emotional piece composed by Marie Claire in memory of the late Ghanaian player.

She released the song on February 6, 2024, coinciding with the day of the earthquake in Turkey, where she tragically lost her husband and father of her three children.

In a statement on social media, she said, “This is a very emotional day already for me and my Family, so many emotions but I know he’ll be proud of me that I didn’t put my head down. He is watching over us. This is for you up there.”

Christian Atsu was discovered deceased on the morning of Saturday, February 18, 2022, at the location of his collapsed apartment, twelve days following a severe earthquake that struck regions of Turkey and Syria.

The 31-year-old, prior to his passing, had represented the Black Stars in 65 matches after his debut in an international friendly against Lesotho at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in 2012.

Atsu had notable spells with clubs including Vitesse, Chelsea, Newcastle, Bournemouth, Everton, and Malaga, among others.

“Is he still watching over us?” – Claire Rupio reveals questions asked by Godwin after Atsu’s death

In a poignant revelation, Claire Rupio, the wife of the late Christian Atsu, has courageously shared the profound anguish she and their three young children have endured in his absence.

Their lives were forever altered by the devastating earthquake that rocked Turkey, claiming the lives of over 50,000 souls, including that of the beloved Ghanaian footballer exactly a year ago.

Claire’s words vividly depict the immense void left behind, echoing the silent cries of a family shattered by loss. Each passing day is marked by the absence of a husband and father, a presence deeply missed and irreplaceable.

In an interview with The Athletic, Claire Rupio indicated that she is sometimes left speechless due to the curious minds of her children. According to her, her second child, Godwin, keeps insisting on knowing the whereabouts of his father.

For Claire, this is a difficult circumstance to be in as telling the truth is a painful pill to swallow, hence has to cook up a story just to protect her children.

“Godwin (now seven) speaks about his dad a lot and asks a lot of questions, which can be tough. ‘Where is he now? What does he do now? Is he still watching over us?’”

Joshua, the eldest child who is now 10 years old, she says, carries Christian as a middle name and bears a striking resemblance to his father.

According to Claire, he has inherited his father’s face, smile, and even his walk. Joshua, was so close to his dead as he was present at his football games. She noted that her son deeply misses seeing his dad on the touchline during his football matches.

This, she said, has made him a quiet kid who is harbouring so many emotions within himself.

“When his dad came and watched him, it was a highlight for him. Now he’s gone. Every child takes it differently, but he has been very quiet. He doesn’t really want to talk, he just wants to see him.

Claire Rupio recounted that one of the most painful moments she had to face was on Father’s Day when her youngest daughter, Abigail, requested that she give her message to her father.

Abigail drew a picture she wanted her dad to have as a sign of her love. It was then she had to explain to her that her dear dad was now in heaven.

“Abigail drew a picture on the 24th and she was telling me, ‘Listen, don’t forget to send this to my dad’,” Claire says. “At first I said, ‘OK’, but then I had to explain that he’s up there watching over you now and she got upset.”

She also indicated that on Father’s Day, one of Christian’s close friends made a special effort to attend a significant school event in order to fill the void left by his absence as best as possible. The first Christmas without him was another challenging period for the family.

January 10 would have been his 32nd birthday. “We were not able to congratulate him, celebrate it with him or call him or anything, so January was very emotional,” Claire says.

According to Claire, since Atsu’s demise, she has been surviving instead of living. To ensure her mental health is not compromised, Claire sent Whatsapp messages to the phone Atsu left behind.

“When people say, ‘How are you coping?’ I don’t cope. I just survive every day,” Claire told The Athletic. “Mentally, you’re fine for a few days, maybe a week, but then lots of emotion comes.

“Sometimes I message Christian on WhatsApp — I just need to let it out,” she says. “‘Why are you not here?’ or maybe one of the kids needs him.”

Christian Atsu Memorial Foundation set to be launched in March – Twin sister confirms

Christiana Atsu Twasam, the twin sister of the late Black Stars player Christian Atsu, has announced plans for the establishment of the Christian Atsu Memorial Foundation.

The launch is set for March 2024, although the specific date has not been finalised. The foundation aims to honour Atsu’s legacy and perpetuate his philanthropic efforts, which endeared him to many beyond his achievements in football.

“We’ll launch the Christian Atsu Memorial Foundation in March to continue his charity work,” she told the Athletic.

Christiana confirmed that she had fronted her brother’s school project, which he was building for the less privileged before his passing.

“I have the baton to continue his work, but it’s not easy. I have to heal first,” says Christiana.

Regarding how she is holding up the loss, Christiana says his brother’s death has hit her harder than losing her mom and dad.

“I know grieving has five stages, but I don’t know where I am at the moment. Sometimes I’m in denial, sometimes acceptance; it fluctuates and I feel like I’m not progressing. I’ve lost my mom and my dad, but Christian’s leaving has had more impact on me than anything.

She added that on her birthday, which also happens to be Christian’s birthday, she changed scenery to escape her grief but she ended up breaking down.

“I went to Chester. But I broke down there. He was not there.”

Christian Atsu passed away following a tragic earthquake in Turkey. The former Black Stars player was trapped under the rubble for about three days before he was found lifeless on February 8, 2023.

Today marks the one-year anniversary of the devastating earthquake that shook Turkey and claimed the lives of over 50,000 including Ghanaian footballer, Christian Atsu.

In honouring his memory, Newcastle FC, a club Atsu used to play for, has paid tribute to the fallen hero.

In a post on X on February 6, 2024, Newcastle noted that the actions of Christian Atsu continues to linger in the heart of many he came in contact with.

According to the club, Atsu was an incredible person and will forever be in their thoughts.

“One year ago we sadly lost Christian Atsu in the most tragic of circumstances. An incredible person who is fondly remembered by everyone at Newcastle United. Our thoughts are forever with Christian’s family and friends. Oh he is so wonderful.”

In May 2017, Atsu signed a four-year deal to join Newcastle permanently for £6.2 million from Chelsea.

Meanwhile, Marie-Claire Rupio, the wife of the late Christian Atsu, has revealed to UK outlet The Athletic that she still sends WhatsApp messages to her deceased husband.

She admitted to questioning Atsu at times about why he is no longer alive and also mentioned messaging him when their children inquired about him.

Rupio, who is Portuguese, expressed that she does not have a specific coping mechanism and emphasised the mental challenges she faces, stating that she simply tries to navigate through each day.

“When people say, ‘How are you coping?’ I don’t cope. I just survive every day,” says Claire. “Mentally, you’re fine for a few days, maybe a week, but then lots of emotion comes.

This is how they found Christian Atsu’s body in Turkey wreckage; sister tells it all

One year after the tragic events in Turkey that sadly led to his passing, the wife, sister, and agent of the late Ghanaian footballer, Christian Atsu, have shared their experiences of coping with the loss of their beloved.

Christiana Twasam, Nana Sechere, and Marie Claire-Rupio, Christian Atsu’s surviving spouse, spoke to The Athletic, based in the UK, revealing the challenges they faced following his demise and how they have been dealing with the void left by his absence.

Christiana Twasam recounted the emotional turmoil caused by the uncertainty surrounding his disappearance and eventual death, highlighting the family’s relentless efforts to locate him.

“When I got there, I was devastated because I thought no one was going to survive in that building,” says Christiana, recalling the sight of the collapsed Renaissance Residence five-star block where Christian was. Hatayspor’s sporting director, Taner Savut, was also in the wreckage.

“We would call out his name,” says Christiana. “The rescuers would alert us if they sensed a life, then bring out the body and you’d be asked to verify if it was someone you knew. It broke my heart when you saw a body bag coming—i was going to be your own relative or not,” she says. “We were like a family around the fire in the evening. When someone verified their relative and broke down, it reminded you that one day you would too.”

Nana Sechere, the agent of Christian Atsu, spoke about a few moments when they received some hope that they were going to find him, hopefully alive.

“I spotted a shoe that looked very much like Christian’s through the legs of one of the search teams,” says Nana. “He threw it over to me and it was one of his Yeezy trainers. We found the other one from the pair soon after, and it told us we were looking in the right place.”

Following days of searching through the rubble in hopes of finding their loved one, known primarily for his charitable endeavours, the family received devastating news. While they were sleeping in tents and cars at night, a call came through confirming that a body had been found. Tragically, it turned out to be Atsu’s.

“Two officials took us to a body bag lying on the floor,” he says. “We had seen so many that even before they were opened, (we knew they) weren’t the right shape or size for Christian. But I could tell by the shape of it that it was Christian. We saw him and we broke down.”

It has been a year since the disappearance of Christian Atsu was announced following an earthquake in Turkey. The former Black Stars player was trapped under the rubble for about three days before he was found lifeless on February 8, 2023.

Claire was left traumatised and could not figure out how to tell the kids about their father’s passing on the spot.

“I needed to figure out how I was going to tell my kids that their dad was gone. It was terrible; there was so much going through my mind.”

She could not tell the kids right away, but she had to take them out for practice during the day and asked the coaches not to show signs that Atsu had passed.

“One of the coaches just came up to me and gave me a hug, but I told him just to be normal, as I hadn’t told them yet. They were awaiting good news when I sat them down and then I looked at them.

Claire had to let the cat out of the bag anyway; hence, she proceeded to do what she wished ‘no parent has to do’.

“I told them, ‘They have found your dad, but he didn’t make it’. It’s something I wish no parent had to do. It was heartbreaking; he was everything to them. Losing anyone is difficult, but we couldn’t even say goodbye.”

  • Remembering Turkey’s catastrophic earthquake: A year later

Remembering Turkey’s catastrophic earthquake: A year later

Today marks the one-year anniversary of the devastating earthquake that shook Turkey to its core, and TIGPost takes a dive into the aftermath of the earthquake.

February 6, 2023, is a date etched into the collective memory of nationals, residents, people who had relatives in Turkey and the global community alike.

At exactly 04:17 TRT (01:17 UTC), a Mw 7.8 earthquake struck southern and central Turkey and northern and western Syria.

In the immediate aftermath of the earthquake were scenes of chaos and devastation as buildings crumbled, streets buckled, and many lives were tragically lost.

The toll was staggering, with thousands injured and many displaced, and families torn apart by the merciless force of nature.

Although the earthquake’s epicenter was far from Ghana’s shores, the loss of Christian Atsu brought the devastation closer to home. Atsu was a remarkable player whose presence on the football field brought joy and inspiration to countless fans.

His talent transcended borders and was prior to his demise playing for Hatayspor in Turkey, but unfortunately he lost his life in the incident.

As a result, Ghanaians joined the global community in mourning the lives lost and extending support to those affected by the disaster.

The confirmed death toll in Turkey was 53,537; estimates of the number of dead in Syria were between 5,951 and 8,476.

The February 6, 2023, earthquake has been recorded as the deadliest earthquake in what is now present-day Turkey since the 526 Antioch earthquake and the deadliest natural disaster in its modern history.

Yet, amidst the rubble and despair, ordinary people became heroes, as they risked their lives to save others trapped beneath the debris.

Communities came together, offering shelter, food, and support to those in need. International organizations also came on board to support.

In the days and weeks following the earthquake, the world rallied behind Turkey, offering aid, assistance, and solidarity.

International relief efforts poured in, with teams of rescuers, medical professionals, and humanitarian organizations working tirelessly to provide relief and support to the affected communities.

    Challenges in the Recovery Process

The recovery process in Turkey and Syria has been fraught with numerous challenges. One of the primary hurdles faced by both countries is the lack of adequate funding. Rebuilding entire communities and infrastructure requires substantial financial resources, which are often limited in the aftermath of a disaster.

Bureaucratic hurdles have also posed significant challenges. The coordination and implementation of recovery efforts involve multiple government agencies, non-profit organizations, and international stakeholders. Streamlining these processes and ensuring effective collaboration can be a complex task, further delaying the recovery process.

Another critical aspect of the recovery process is addressing the psychological well-being of the survivors. The earthquake left many individuals traumatized, with deep emotional scars that require attention and support. Providing mental health services and counseling to the affected population is crucial in ensuring their long-term well-being and facilitating the healing process.

Government Response and Initiatives for Recovery

The governments of Turkey and Syria have taken active steps to address the challenges posed by the earthquake and facilitate the recovery process. Both countries have established dedicated government agencies responsible for coordinating and overseeing the rebuilding efforts.

In Turkey, the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization has been at the forefront of the recovery process, working closely with local authorities and international organizations. The government has implemented strict building codes and regulations to ensure the construction of earthquake-resistant structures, aiming to minimize the impact of future disasters.

Syria, despite facing political and economic challenges, has also made progress in its recovery efforts. The Syrian government has prioritized the rehabilitation of critical infrastructure, such as water and electricity networks, to restore essential services to the affected regions. Government-led initiatives have focused on providing temporary shelter, healthcare services, and education facilities to displaced communities.

International Aid and Support for the Affected Regions

The international community has played a crucial role in supporting Turkey and Syria’s recovery process. Various countries, non-governmental organizations, and international bodies have extended financial assistance, technical expertise, and humanitarian aid to the affected regions.

International aid has been instrumental in addressing immediate needs, such as emergency medical assistance, food, and clean water. Additionally, foreign governments and organizations have partnered with local authorities to provide resources for long-term reconstruction, including funding for housing, infrastructure, and sustainable development projects.

Collaboration between local and international stakeholders has been essential in leveraging expertise and resources to accelerate the recovery process. Non-profit organizations have been actively involved in providing on-ground support, including emergency relief, medical services, and psychological counseling to survivors.

    Infrastructure and Housing Reconstruction Efforts

Rebuilding infrastructure and housing has been a significant focus of the recovery process in Turkey and Syria. Efforts have been made to restore damaged roads, bridges, and utilities, ensuring the efficient functioning of essential services. The construction of earthquake-resistant buildings has also been prioritized to mitigate future risks.

In Turkey, the government has implemented innovative approaches to housing reconstruction, such as the use of prefabricated structures. Prefabricated housing offers a cost-effective and rapid solution to provide temporary shelter to displaced communities while permanent housing is being constructed.

Syria, with its extensive urban damage, has faced unique challenges in rebuilding its cities. The government has worked closely with international experts to develop urban planning strategies that prioritize safety, accessibility, and sustainability. Efforts are underway to restore public spaces, revitalize neighborhoods, and create resilient communities.

Economic Recovery and Rebuilding Local Businesses

The earthquake’s impact on the local economy has been significant, with businesses and livelihoods disrupted in the affected regions. Economic recovery has been a crucial aspect of the overall recovery process in Turkey and Syria.

Both countries have implemented measures to support local businesses and stimulate economic growth. In Turkey, the government has provided financial assistance and tax incentives to affected businesses, encouraging them to resume operations and contribute to the recovery efforts.

Syria, despite the ongoing conflict, has also taken steps to rebuild its economy. The government has focused on creating an enabling environment for entrepreneurship and attracting investments to the affected regions. Efforts have been made to provide microfinance opportunities and vocational training to empower individuals and rebuild livelihoods.

Rehabilitation of Healthcare and Education Systems

The earthquake severely impacted healthcare and education systems in the affected regions. Hospitals and medical facilities were damaged, leaving communities without access to essential healthcare services. Schools and educational institutions were also destroyed or rendered unsafe, disrupting the education of thousands of children.

Rehabilitating healthcare and education systems has been a top priority for Turkey and Syria. Both countries have worked towards restoring healthcare facilities, ensuring the availability of medical supplies, and training healthcare professionals to address the increased demand for services.

In the education sector, efforts have been made to rebuild schools and provide temporary learning spaces for children. Access to quality education is seen as crucial for the long-term recovery and development of the affected regions. Innovative solutions, such as mobile classrooms and distance learning programs, have been implemented to ensure continued education.

    Environmental Impact and Conservation Efforts

The earthquake’s impact extended beyond human lives and infrastructure, affecting the environment and natural resources. The destruction of ecosystems, soil erosion, and potential hazards posed by damaged infrastructure have raised concerns about the long-term environmental impact.

To address these challenges, Turkey and Syria have focused on implementing sustainable and eco-friendly practices in the recovery process. Efforts have been made to restore and conserve natural habitats, promote reforestation, and mitigate the risks of future disasters through better land management and urban planning.

Conservation organizations and environmental experts have collaborated with local authorities to develop strategies that balance the need for reconstruction with environmental preservation. The integration of green infrastructure and sustainable design principles in rebuilding efforts has been crucial in creating resilient and environmentally conscious communities.

Achievements and Lessons Learned from the Recovery Process

Despite the numerous challenges, Turkey and Syria have achieved significant milestones in their recovery process. The communities have shown resilience and strength, coming together to rebuild their lives and support each other in times of adversity.

From the establishment of efficient coordination mechanisms to the implementation of innovative solutions, the recovery efforts have showcased the determination and resourcefulness of the affected regions. The international community’s support and collaboration have also played a vital role in accelerating the recovery process.

The recovery process has provided valuable lessons for future disaster preparedness and response. The importance of early warning systems, robust infrastructure, and community engagement in disaster management has been emphasized. The need for stronger international cooperation and support in times of crisis has also been highlighted.

As Turkey and Syria continue their journey towards recovery and healing, the challenges may persist, but the achievements attained thus far serve as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of unity in the face of adversity.

Dwamena’s sister collapses on TV after watching video of her brother and Christian Atsu

The family of Ghanaian international Raphael Dwamena, has recounted the emotional experience of discovering the tragic news of their son’s death through social media reports.

Mother and sister (Yvonne) painfully did so on TV3’s Onua Maakye show, while dressed in black mourning attire. They were visibly distraught as they struggled to articulate their feelings and experiences since Raphael’s untimely death.

Yvonne stated: “Earlier on, he told me he had a match on Saturday, so, he called me again on Thursday and I gave him my well wishes. I told my mom that Nana Kwame said he had a match, and mom wished him well as always.

“On Saturday, my mom called me and asked that I check reports on Facebook. I instantly became tensed before I headed to Facebook only to confirm what had happened,” she narrated tearfully.

“I just don’t want to believe it,” she said, explaining how she had to convince her mother that Raphael was asleep and a confirmation would be made the next day.

Not long after, the host of the show, Captain Smart, broadcast a video of both Dwamena and the late Christian Atsu, who passed on in February this year, playing together for the Black Stars.

Suddenly, there was a glitch in the broadcast of the show and Captain Smart explained due to the trauma of watching her late brother during his days with the senior national team, Yvonne, Dwamena’s sister, passed out and has been sent to the hospital.

“As she watched her brother and Atsu play, we don’t know what happened, it took a toll on her and she collapsed. So we called for an ambulance and have transported her to the hospital. She will be fine. Her mother is still with us,” he said.

Raphael Dwamena passed away on Saturday, November 11, 2023. He collapsed and died during a game between Egnatia Rrogozhinë and Partizani Tirana in the Abania League.

Christian Atsu’s wife using dance as therapy to overcome grief

Marie-Claire Rupio, the wife of the late Christian Atsu, has recently faced stern criticism over a video she uploaded on her Instagram account. On May 30, 2023, Marie-Claire shared a clip of herself dancing to Davido’s latest hit song, “Unavailable.”

As expected, Marie-Claire showcased her impeccable dance moves, displaying her talent as a dancer. In the post, she acknowledged her hesitation to share the video, stating, “I am just trying to get up into dancing again…slowly.”

Despite the widow’s innocent intentions, the video sparked unsolicited advice and criticism regarding the mourning process for widows in Africa. One commenter, Favoursalu, wrote, “Yes oo, I nearly told her yesterday on her page that widows mourn for 6 months to 1 year minimum in our part of the world.”

The negative remarks received prompted Marie-Claire Rupio to clarify the reason behind her post on June 1, 2023. The German widow reiterated that she and her three children are still struggling with the loss of Christian Atsu, who passed away in February of this year due to an earthquake in Turkey.

Marie-Claire explained that her decision to share the dance video was not intended to show that she had quickly moved on from her late husband or to cause any harm. Instead, she expressed that dancing has become a therapeutic outlet for her to cope with her grief.

“I am writing just to say a few things, yes I posted a dance video. Not because I am happy but because I have to find a way to deal with my grief,” she stated.

Marie-Claire emphasized that she cannot give up on herself, as she is not “alone” and has “3 children to take care of by myself.” She added, “I can’t lose myself because I need to be strong for them.”

She educated her followers about the various ways mental health is addressed in Europe, and she shared that dancing has always been her passion.

Expressing her frustration, Marie-Claire Rupio advised her attackers to “just think before you write something or put it on YouTube.”

In her effort to clarify matters and manage her own emotions and those of her children, Marie-Claire admitted that they are “missing Christian every single day, and it hasn’t been easy.”

The breaking point for her is when her children ask for their father every day. “I am doing my best,” she concluded.

It is evident that the passing of Ghanaian footballer Christian Atsu continues to bring pain to his family.

Following Atsu’s burial, Marie-Claire paid tribute to her late husband by performing “In The Stars” by Benson Boone in one of her posts. She resonated with a part of the song that states she is “alone between the heavens and the embers.”

Her tribute focused on the chorus, which says:

“I’m still holdin’ on to everything that’s dead and gone
I don’t wanna say goodbye, ’cause this one means forever
Now you’re in the stars, and six feet’s never felt so far
Here I am alone between the heavens and the embers.”

Check out the lyrics of “In The Stars” in Benson Boone’s 2022 album “Walk me Home”

    Sunday mornings were your favorite
I used to meet you down on Woods Creek Road
You did your hair up like you were famous
Even though it’s only church where we were goin’

Now, Sunday mornings, I just sleep in
It’s like I buried my faith with you
    I’m screamin’ at a God, I don’t know if I believe in
‘Cause I don’t know what else I can do

I’m still holdin’ on to everything that’s dead and gone
I don’t wanna say goodbye, ’cause this one means forever
Now you’re in the stars and six-feet’s never felt so far
Here I am alone between the heavens and the embers

    Oh, it hurts so hard
    For a million different reasons
You took the best of my heart
And left the rest in pieces

Diggin’ through your old birthday letters
A crumpled 20 still in the box
I don’t think that I could ever find a way to spend it
Even if it’s the last 20 that I’ve got, oh

I’m still holdin’ on to everything that’s dead and gone
I don’t wanna say goodbye, ’cause this one means forever
Now you’re in the stars and six-feet’s never felt so far
Here I am alone between the heavens and the embers

    Oh, it hurts so hard
    For a million different reasons
You took the best of my heart
And left the rest in pieces

    I’m still holdin’ on
    Holdin’ on, holdin’ on
    I’m still holdin’ on
    Holdin’ on, holdin’ on
    I’m still holdin’ on
    Holdin’ on
    I’m still holdin’ on
    I’m still, ooh
    Still holdin’ on

I’m still holdin’ on to everything that’s dead and gone
I don’t wanna say goodbye ’cause this one means forever
Now you’re in the stars and six-feet’s never felt so far
Here I am alone between the heavens and the embers

Beyond his performance on the field, testimonies about the life of Christian Atsu following his demise have brought to light his acts of benevolence and philanthropy.

In a video shared by Ghana News TV on YouTube, a Ghanaian lady based in Portugal shared her personal experience with Atsu at a time when she was at her lowest.

Addressing a gathering of Atsu’s family and friends during his funeral activities, the lady said she met the late Black Stars player in Portugal in 2011 when she was struggling with her preterm baby.

“Before giving birth, the man responsible left. In March 2011, I met Christian and he asked me for directions to a shop where he can get gari to buy. After showing him the shop and buying his gari, he looked at my baby with an oxygen tube in his nose and asked me if he is sick? I told him no, and that he is a premature baby. He just looked at me and told me to ask him for help if I needed any right after giving me his number,” she narrated.

According to the lady, her first encounter with Atsu who was then struggling to find his feet as a young player with FC Porto’s junior team made her a long-term beneficiary of his benevolence.

“I was without a husband and with a baby who needed to be taken to the hospital every week. I was very broke with no money to even feed but Christian entreated me to fall on him whenever I needed help. He was giving me €200 every week,” she said.

Amidst tears, the lady further narrated that she received help from Atsu in various forms mostly monetary, including helping her to secure a Portuguese passport.

She noted that the footballer at a point trusted her with his bank card and pin when he needed her to run some errands.

She added that she formed a good relationship with Atsu and his wife throughout his footballing career and remained a beneficiary of his benevolence.

“The Christian you gave birth to, did not start being charitable just 5 years ago. Standing here today my son will be 13 in July and if I had not met him… I am sharing my condolence with all of us here. I am grateful to you for giving birth to such a person who helped me to be where I am today,” she added.

Christian Atsu met his untimely death when he was recovered from the rubble of his collapsed apartment in Hatay following an earthquake that struck Turkey on February 6, 2023.

Joseph Kumi, a 19-year-old footballer and the adopted son of the late Christian Atsu, is on the verge of losing his eyes due to cancer.

Joseph, popularly known as Christiano Ronaldo, who resides at Gomoa Dabenyi in the Gomoa East District of the Central region, is three times Milo Champion.

Information gathered by Adom News‘ Kofi Adjei suggests Joseph was diagnosed with the ailment while he was about to travel to Europe to continue his football career.

The talented youngster, who was been catered for by late Atsu at Cheetah FC, now has his right eye gushing out and has been confined to his room for the past year due to financial constraints.

In an interview, Joseph Kumi revealed that Christian Atsu adopted him and supplied him with football kits anytime he comes on holidays in Ghana and was the one who helped him get an agent in Europe.

He said doctors at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital are demanding Ghc20,000 before they can perform surgery for him but they haven’t even been able to raise a penny.

He has, therefore, appealed to Ghanaians to come to his rescue to alleviate him of his daily excruciating pains.

Meanwhile, Joseph’s mother, Akua Akyere, who could not control her tears, said her hope was dashed after she heard Christian Atsu is dead.

  • Why was Atsu retired when Messi won the World Cup at 35 – Sonnie Badu to GFA

Sonnie Badu, a preacher and musician, has urged the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to alter its outlook and behavior.

He finds it distressing that the football organization has essentially coerced several players into early retirement throughout the years.

His opinions were expressed in an open letter to the GFA following Christian Atsu, a player for the Black Stars,’ funeral and burial.

In contrast to Lionel Messi, the PSG star and Argentina captain, who won the World Cup in Qatar at the age of 35, Atsu, sometimes referred to as the Messi of Ghana, took a step back at the age of 31.

“Dear GFA @chris_atsu has been finally laid to rest. However, let me say this .. Let this be a reform of mindset and a change of attitude…. I know our @ghana_fa_official chairman will do things differently

“I heard in recent interviews people saying that he was the Messi of Ghana… Well you guys retired him quick – whiles Messi is still playing the World Cup… Messi is 35 and Astu was 31 …

“Let us learn how to make players feel important while they are alive. We should not wait for something to happen to them before we take over their funeral expenses and all of that,” his letter read in part.

The March 17, 2023 final funeral rites of Christian Atsu attracted people from all walks of life as the forecourt of the State House buzzed with activity.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his vice were in attendance along with a high-powered government delegation. Also in attendance was the former president John Dramani Mahama.

Member of Parliament hopeful for the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency, Fred Nuamah, has revealed in what capacity he attended the funeral of the late Christian Atsu.

Fred has clarified that he went there as a sport manager and also to offer his support. Many Ghanaians who attended or watched the funeral service from their various homes may have assumed that the Ghanaian actor was there because of the position he is fighting for.

When asked by the host, MzGee, whether he planned to attend Atsu’s funeral, Fred Nuamah, who was a special guest on Utv’s United Showbiz, disclosed this.

“I am into sport management thus I went with one of my footballers who is Emmanuel Adebayor. So, if you saw me at the funeral, then it means I was there as a sport manager and not a parliamentary hopeful as you asked”

“Anyone who is into sport management, and if someone who is part of the sporting field dies and the footballers are invited, managers are also supposed to go so I went there as a sport manager”, Fred Nuamah’s reply to the host.

He continued by saying that, the late Christian Atsu hails from his mother’s hometown so there was no way he could miss Christian Atsu’s funeral.

He stated, “The man we are talking about is from my mother’s hometown so it was prudent on my part for me to attend the funeral. Also, I went as someone who knew the man who is leaving us”.

In explaining his view in an interview with TV3, the player was better off marrying a non-Ghanaian because of custody pf properties that come up when husbands die.

“What made me happy is that Atsu never married a Black woman,” Langabel said after recounting fond memories with the former footballer.

“Because when Atsu marries a Black woman, this funeral will be dogged by controversies between both sides of the families, usually fighting for property.

The dramatic action which happened at the blind side of the police, nevertheless grabbed the notice of several mourners who were flowing out of the State House, venue for the official funeral for the late Black Stars winger.

The danger of the unidentified fan’s behavior and the reasons it shouldn’t be promoted were swiftly brought up.

Many criticized the journalist for being inconsiderate to the situation and hardship of the young boy who merely smiled without responding after the comment went viral on social media.

  • The untold story of Christian Atsu’s difficult journey to Europe

The untold story of Christian Atsu’s difficult journey to Europe

At age 16, Gomoa Fetteh Feyenoord Academy demanded a whopping GH¢25,000 from Cheetah FC for the services of the player who had been scouted by a FIFA-certified agency, Romp Project.

Christian Atsu’s talent was so glaring and his future very promising that Fetteh Feyenoord, where he was first discovered and groomed as a teenager, was not willing to let him go on the cheap, though the Founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Cheetah FC, Abdul Haye Yartey, had secured a trial opportunity at Sporting Lisbon for the precocious youngster at the time.

The Cheetah FC Founder, who played a significant role in the player’s career development and maintained a close relationship with his protégé until his death, narrates how the youngster’s career got off and how he became the shining light among his peers.

“It all started in 2008 when I was contacted by my partner, Graham Heydorn, to scout for players for his Romp Project during their visit to Ghana for the African Cup of Nations,” Mr Yartey told the Daily Graphic in an interview.

“I had my selected players, so I called Sam Arday [now deceased, then Technical Director of Feyenoord] to allow us to play against his Feyenoord side and he agreed to the request. So, we honoured the match, and Atsu, together with three players from my team, was scouted by the Romp Project.

“That was where the Atsu story started from because it turned out to be a successful decision, as we came out with one of the best players on the continent.”

    Failed move to Sporting Lisbon

Atsu, Alhassan Wakaso, Aaron Amoah, and Evans Ofosu Antwi turned out as the players scouted for the Romp Project, in the presence of Paola Cardoso, then Chief Scout at Portuguese giants, Sporting Lisbon.

Impressed with the talents on display, Cardoso facilitated a trial for the players at his club, but Feyenoord refused to release their most prized asset to travel to Portugal.

    Atsu

According to Mr Haye, Feyenoord’s refusal to allow Atsu to travel turned somewhat chaotic because the young footballer’s family objected to his club’s rejection of a trial.

Seen as a lifetime opportunity for the youngster, Atsu’s family attempted to wrest him from Feyenoord to clear the way for the trial at Sporting Lisbon.

“I was home one day when Isaac Twasam, a senior brother to Atsu, came to me wanting to sign him from Feyenoord so he could travel to Portugal for the trial, but it became very difficult.

“Feyenoord were holding out for GH¢25,000 as the price tag for the youngster, but it was too expensive at the time because we were buying players for GH¢700 then,” Yartey said.

Unfortunately, Atsu failed to travel to Portugal for the trials, with only Alhassan Wakaso making the trip because Aaron Amoah and Evans Ofosu Antwi were called into the national under-17 team (Black Starlets) at the time.

    Signing with Cheetah FC

The whole story changed when Mr Yartey received a call from Sam Arday to come for a discussion to sign Atsu the turning point in his football career.

“A year and a half later, Feyenoord called for another meeting to renegotiate the signing of Atsu, because the player’s contract was about to expire in three months’ time, as the Fetteh side were unwilling to extend it.

“So, we finally agreed to pay GH¢3,000 for his signature, but Feyenoord insisted on a 40 per cent onward transfer, so he finally joined Cheetah FC,” Mr Yartey narrated further.

Mr Yartey said he contacted Graham Heydorn of Romp Project to inform him of the acquisition of Atsu by Cheetah FC and immediately, the European scout facilitated a trial for the youngster at Portuguese giants, FC Porto.

    Breakthrough move to FC Porto

Atsu’s first deal was a six-month loan which was extended by a year for which Cheetah FC received €145,000 from FC Porto, with Feyenoord pocketing €58,000 as their share of his onward transfer as captured in the contract with Kasoa-based Cheetah FC.

“I remember what we went through to get his passport and visa for him to travel, and at the end of the day it was worth it.

“It was very difficult for him [Atsu] to break into the first team immediately because he was very young, but he impressed and finally got the breakthrough he deserved.”

Atsu went on to play for English sides Chelsea, Everton, Bournemouth, and Newcastle United, in addition to loan spells at Spanish club Malaga and Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem.

After leaving Newcastle in 2021, he moved to Saudi Arabian side Al Raed, for a year, before joining Turkish club Hatayspor until his untimely death in the earthquake that hit Turkiye last month.

    Humanitarian side

Atsu played numerous roles in the lives of many but was mainly known for his philanthropic work with the Crime Check Foundation and Arms Around the Child.

He was lauded by many for touching lives with his humanitarian works, and Yartey believes he was sent on earth for a mission.

“He is someone that likes to help people without making it public and that was how generous he was.

“There were times he did things beyond our imagination, but that was nature, and I will forever miss him,” Mr Yartey said, as he detailed the soft side a football icon famed for his talent and amazing display of philanthropy, without seeking publicity for those noble acts.

The Independent Ghana was at the State House in Accra where the remains of the 31-year-old laid in state.

Family, friends, government officials, and colleagues in the sports industry gathered to mourn one of Africa’s brightest stars.

The immediate and extended families of Christian Atsu could not hold back their tears as they watched what remained of their beloved lying in the casket draped with a Ghana flag.

A journalist who works with Adom TV has come under severe social media bashing for asking a question to later-born Christian Atsu’s son at the funeral.

The journalist had asked one of the player’s sons how it felt for him to lose his father at such a young age.

While Christian Atsu’s wife and kids were making their way to the forecourt of the State House for the funeral, the journalist posed the question.

Although he did not give an answer, he was full of laughter as he was ushered to his seat alongside some members of his mother’s family.

I believe that was a bad question to ask such a young child at the funeral of his own father. Christian Atsu was married to author Marie-Claire Rupio, with whom he had two sons and a daughter.
