“I love Santos” – Neymar’s words following return to Santos after 12 years

Brazilian striker Neymar has noted that the experience of playing for Santos again after 12 years as indescribable.

At 33 years old, Neymar returned to Santos on January 31, having left the club in 2013 to join Barcelona.

He came on during the second half of the match, with Santos leading 1-0. Despite being back from injury, Neymar made an impact as Botafogo came from behind to secure a 1-1 draw at the Estadio Vila Belmiro.

    “I love Santos,” said Neymar.
“I have no words to describe what I felt tonight when I stepped again on this pitch.

“I need minutes, games. I’m not at 100%. I didn’t expect to run and dribble so much tonight. I think I’ll feel better in four or five games.”

A number of Botafogo players and members of the club’s backroom staff sought out Neymar on the pitch after the final whistle to request photos with the former Brazil captain.

Neymar won six trophies during his first time at Santos, including the 2011 Copa Libertadores.

He left the club at just 21, having scored 136 goals in 225 games.

While away, Neymar became the world’s most expensive player when he moved from Barcelona to Paris St-Germain for £200m in 2017.

However, his time in Saudi Arabia with Al-Hilal went poorly after he injured his knee ligament, which kept him from playing in more than seven matches.

In 2023, Santos, the club once home to Brazil legend Pele, was relegated from the top division for the first time in its 111-year history. But they made an immediate return to the top league by winning Serie B the following season.

Ghana, Brazil sign cocoa pact to enhance global industry collaboration

The Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) has entered into a strategic partnership with Apex Brasil and the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock to foster greater collaboration in the cocoa industry.

This agreement was formalized during a key meeting at Cocoa House in Accra, which was part of a Brazilian Presidential Mission to Africa.

Leading the Brazilian delegation, Her Excellency Marirana Madeira, Brazil’s Ambassador to Ghana, alongside officials from Apex Brasil and the Ministry of Agriculture, held discussions with COCOBOD’s Acting Chief Executive and his team. The talks focused on enhancing technical and economic collaboration between both countries in the cocoa sector.

The agenda centered on utilizing Brazil’s technological advancements to boost cocoa productivity, exchanging methods for managing cocoa diseases, and facilitating joint research efforts between Brazil’s cocoa industry and Ghana’s Cocoa Research Institute (CRIG).

One of the key issues raised during the meeting was the state of the global cocoa market and price fluctuations. The importance of collaboration between the world’s top cocoa producers—Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Brazil, Nigeria, and Ecuador—was also emphasized in order to increase cocoa farmers’ incomes and support sustainable practices within the cocoa sector.

The discussions also delved into potential scientific partnerships, particularly in areas such as cocoa flavor research and disease management, including efforts to combat Witches’ Broom in Brazil and Cocoa Swollen Shoot Virus Disease (CSSVD) in Ghana.

Additionally, the delegation showed interest in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire’s $400 per tonne Living Income Differential (LID), a model designed to raise cocoa farmers’ earnings.

At the conclusion of the meeting, COCOBOD, Apex Brasil, and Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock officially signed the Declaration of Intent, marking a significant step in strengthening ties between Ghana and Brazil while promoting sustainable cocoa farming practices and research cooperation.

  • TikTok to close down its music streaming platform on November 28

TikTok to close down its music streaming platform on November 28

TikTok has announced that it will shut down its music streaming service, TikTok Music, globally on November 28. Currently available in only five countries Indonesia, Brazil, Australia, Singapore, and Mexico, the platform will cease operations in these regions.

The decision comes as TikTok aims to redirect its resources towards enhancing the “Add To Music App” feature. This functionality allows users to save music tracks they discover on TikTok directly to playlists on their favorite music streaming platforms.

Ole Obermann, TikTok’s Global Head of Music Business Development, explained that the “Add to Music App” feature has facilitated hundreds of millions of track saves to partner platforms, emphasizing TikTok’s commitment to increasing music consumption and value for artists and the industry.

Launched last summer as a successor to ByteDance’s existing music platform, Resso, TikTok Music had secured licenses from all major record labels. Despite launching in additional countries last October, the app initially lacked Universal Music Group’s catalog due to licensing disputes, which TikTok has since resolved.

TikTok’s “Add To Music App” feature is already integrated with major streaming services like Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon, and is available to users in over 180 countries. The company is reportedly in talks with other music subscription platforms to expand this feature further.

Recently, TikTok highlighted its influence on music trends, noting that over a quarter of the Top 100 singles in Germany last year gained popularity on the platform before charting.

  • Brazil, Argentina lose their latest World Cup qualifying matches

Brazil, Argentina lose their latest World Cup qualifying matches

Brazil and Argentina both suffered defeats in their latest 2026 World Cup qualifying matches, with Brazil losing 1-0 to Paraguay and Argentina falling 2-1 to Colombia.

In Asuncion, Inter Miami’s Diego Gomez struck the only goal for Paraguay after 20 minutes, handing Brazil their fourth defeat in five qualifying games.

Despite a star-studded lineup featuring Real Madrid’s Rodrygo, Endrick, and Vinicius Jr in attack, Brazil struggled to create chances, failing to register a shot on target in the first half. Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson, Newcastle’s Bruno Guimaraes, and West Ham’s Lucas Paqueta all started, but the team couldn’t find a way past Paraguay’s defense.

The result leaves Brazil fifth in the South American qualifying table, with just three wins in eight games. Their poor run of form follows their early exit from the Copa America, where they were knocked out in the quarter-finals. Appointed in January, manager Dorival Jr is still finding his feet with the team.

Defender Marquinhos addressed the team’s current struggles, telling TV Globo, “The coach is still figuring out the best way for us to play and that’s reflected in the result.

There are a lot of new players, we are lacking confidence. Qualifying isn’t easy, it’s a difficult time and we have to know how to manage it. It’s a time of transition.”

Meanwhile, Argentina, without Lionel Messi, were beaten 2-1 by Colombia in Barranquilla. Former Real Madrid and Everton midfielder James Rodriguez proved to be the hero for Colombia, scoring the winning penalty in the 60th minute. Rodriguez also assisted the opener, crossing for Wolves’ Yerson Mosquera to head in the first goal after 25 minutes.

Argentina fought back, with Nicolas Gonzalez equalizing three minutes after the break. However, a foul by Nicolas Otamendi on Crystal Palace’s Daniel Munoz led to a penalty following a VAR review. Rodriguez confidently dispatched the spot-kick, sending Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez the wrong way.

Reflecting on his performance, Rodriguez said, “I don’t think I’ve ever scored against them – there’s a first time for everything. We want to get used to playing finals. Today was just another game, but against a team that has won everything – this victory tastes even better.”

Despite the defeat, Argentina remain at the top of the 10-team qualifying table, two points clear of second-placed Colombia. The top six teams from the South American qualifiers will automatically secure their place in the 2026 World Cup, while the seventh-placed team will compete in an intercontinental play-off.

Elsewhere, Uruguay were held to a 0-0 draw by Venezuela, with new Manchester United signing Manuel Ugarte starting for his national team. In Asia, Australia’s qualifying campaign remains shaky after a 0-0 draw against Indonesia, following a 1-0 home defeat to Bahrain.

Meanwhile, Japan secured a commanding 5-0 win over Bahrain, with Premier League players Wataru Endo (Liverpool), Kaoru Mitoma (Brighton), and Daichi Kamada (Crystal Palace) in the starting lineup. South Korea also recorded their first win in World Cup qualifying, defeating Oman 3-1, with goals from Tottenham captain Son Heung-min and Wolves forward Hwang Hee-chan.

  • We need Neymar to win 2026 World Cup – Real Madrid’s Rodrygo

We need Neymar to win 2026 World Cup – Real Madrid’s Rodrygo

Real Madrid forward Rodrygo says Neymar’s presence is vital for Brazil as they pursue their sixth World Cup title in 2026.

After scoring the decisive first-half goal that secured Brazil’s 1-0 victory over Ecuador on Friday, breaking their three-match losing streak in CONMEBOL qualifying, the 23-year-old highlighted Neymar’s importance to the national team’s success moving forward.

“He’s our star, our best player,” Rodrygo said in an exclusive ESPN Brasil interview. “Anyone can see it, how much he is missed. Having Neymar healthy, which is what we all want, [and] he is in the final stages of his recovery.

We want him back as soon as possible.”

Brazil, the five-time world champions, ended 2023 on a difficult note, suffering consecutive losses to Uruguay, Colombia, and Argentina.

After these defeats, Brazil sat in sixth place in the standings with just six rounds played. However, with their victory on Friday, Brazil now stands in fourth place with 10 points.

They are scheduled to face Paraguay in Asuncion on Tuesday.

Neymar, Brazil’s all-time leading men’s scorer, underwent surgery on November 2, 2023, to repair ACL and meniscus injuries in his left knee, which he sustained during a World Cup qualifying loss to Uruguay in October.

The former Barcelona and PSG star had joined Saudi club Al Hilal in the summer of 2023 for €90 million.

Throughout his career, Neymar has dealt with recurring injuries, including several right ankle and foot injuries that sidelined him in 2021 and kept him out of Brazil’s 2019 Copa América triumph.

Meanwhile, Rodrygo, a rising star for Brazil, has expressed his admiration for Neymar, stating that they remain in contact and that he views Neymar as his idol.

“We always message each other. He is now returning to training with the group,” Rodrygo said. “He’s a great teammate. It makes me sad when I see someone talking badly about him, because of the person he is.

He always sends me messages, helps me. I love him. In addition to being my idol as a player, as a person he has shown himself to be a fantastic person.”

Rodrygo tallied 10 goals in 34 LaLiga games last season and scored an additional five goals in the Champions League.

The arrival of Kylian Mbappé has increased competition for Rodrygo’s spot in the Real Madrid lineup.

Despite this, coach Carlo Ancelotti has consistently included him in the three-man forward trio for the current season.

Meanwhile, Paraguay and Uruguay ended their qualifying match on Friday with a goalless tie.

  • “There are days that I want to give up” – Neymar on ACL recovery struggles

Brazilian striker Neymar has confessed that “there are days that I want to give up” as he recovers from a severe knee injury.

The Al Hilal forward has been out of action since October after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus in his left knee during international duty.

On Instagram, the 32-year-old Neymar shared insights into his recovery journey, emphasizing his determination and resilience.

He wrote: “After I suffered this injury, there are days that are difficult, there are days that I want to give up. It’s hard to go through all of this.

“But here’s a warrior who won’t stop until I get what I want! God is my strength and my fortress. We will continue fighting every day.”

Neymar has only played five games for Al Hilal since signing a two-year contract with the Saudi Pro League club in August 2023 before suffering a season-ending injury.

Brazil’s all-time leading scorer missed the Copa América, which Argentina won.

Al Hilal manager Jorge Jesus recently expressed hope that Neymar could return to action in September.

Brazil to face Uruguay in Copa America quarter-finals

Brazil’s quest for Copa America glory took an unexpected turn as they were held to a draw by Colombia in their final group-stage match, setting up a quarter-final clash with Uruguay.

The match, held in California, saw Brazil, five-time World Cup champions, aiming for a victory to secure top spot in Group D. They started strongly, with Barcelona winger Raphinha scoring a spectacular free-kick to give his team an early lead.

However, Colombia, unbeaten since February 2022, responded resiliently and equalized just before halftime through Crystal Palace defender Daniel Munoz’s close-range strike.

Despite both teams pushing for a winner in the second half, including a close chance for Colombia’s Rafael Borre, who fired over from close range late in the game, neither side could break the deadlock. The draw meant Colombia topped Group D, setting up a quarter-final against Panama, while Brazil finished as runners-up and will now face Uruguay, who are 15-time winners of the tournament.

Real Madrid winger Vinicius Jr will miss Brazil’s upcoming quarter-final after receiving his second yellow card of the tournament.

Meanwhile, in the group’s other match, Costa Rica secured a 2-1 victory over Paraguay, thanks to goals from Francisco Calvo and Josimar Alcocer. However, Costa Rica’s hopes of progressing were dashed as they finished one point behind Brazil in the standings.

The Copa America quarter-finals kick off on Friday, with defending champions Argentina taking on Ecuador at 02:00 BST.

The stage is set for an exciting knockout phase as teams vie for supremacy in South American football’s premier tournament.

Intense turbulence forces plane to divert to Brazil, injuring 30 passengers

An Air Europa Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner flying from Madrid to Montevideo made an emergency landing in Brazil after encountering severe turbulence, resulting in injuries to approximately 30 passengers.

The incident occurred mid-air, prompting Flight UX045 to divert to Natal Airport in northeastern Brazil en route to its destination in Uruguay, according to the airline’s statement on X, formerly known as Twitter.

It added that passengers who suffered injuries were “receiving attention”.

An Air Europa spokesperson reported that the plane, carrying 325 passengers, encountered turbulence over the Atlantic Ocean as it approached the Brazilian coast.

The aircraft landed without incident and was met by a fleet of ambulances.

Airport officials reported that several passengers required medical attention and were transported to the nearest hospital.

According to local medical personnel speaking to Brazilian media, they treated around 30 passengers of various nationalities, with 10 of them needing hospitalization. The injuries sustained included cranial fractures and facial cuts from impacts during turbulence.

This incident occurred shortly after a Singapore Airlines flight experienced severe turbulence over Myanmar, resulting in numerous injuries and the tragic death of a British passenger.

Although severe turbulence remains uncommon, recent research suggests that climate change may be contributing to an increased risk.

With all due respect, Vinicius Junior. I’m sorry, I love you, but he’s very funny. Ugly but funny.”

Brazil took an early lead through Fulham midfielder Andreas Pereira, who converted a pass from Savio. Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli then doubled Brazil’s lead shortly after halftime with a tap-in.

Mexico fought back with Julian Quinones scoring in the 73rd minute, and Guillermo Martinez Ayala equalizing in the second minute of stoppage time.

Endrick is set to join Real Madrid from Palmeiras this summer, having agreed to the move in December.

He told RTVE this week: “I hope it is a wonderful story with Real Madrid and to be in Madrid all my life.”

Upon encountering a group of people from Eldorado do Sul in need of help, Costa wasted no time mobilizing his resources for the rescue operation.

He also enlisted the support of four friends who provided additional jet skis to augment the efforts. Videos circulating on social media captured Costa navigating flooded roads, and thanks to the collective efforts, approximately 100 individuals were successfully evacuated to safety.

As per the Daily Mail, an eyewitness said: “What Diego did today, I had never seen before. He only arrived [at Gremio] a few months ago, but he left his truck in the water and took his jetski and those of his friends.”

  • At least 37 people have died after heavy flood hit southern Brazil

At least 37 people have died after heavy flood hit southern Brazil

Severe rain in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul caused floods that killed 37 people. Another 74 people are still missing. Many cities were heavily affected by the floods and thousands of people had to leave their homes.

There were four big environmental disasters in one year. In July, September, and November 2023, there were floods that killed 75 people in total.

The flooding in the whole state is worse than the historic flood in 1941, according to the Brazilian Geological Service. The water levels in some cities were the highest they have been in almost 150 years, according to the agency.

On Thursday, a dam at a power plant between Bento Goncalves and Cotipora broke and flooded cities in the Taquari River valley, such as Lajeado and Estrela. In Feliz town, a big river flooded and washed away a bridge that connected it to the nearby city of Linha Nova, which is 50 miles (80 kilometers) from the state capital, Porto Alegre.

Without internet, phones, or power, people had a hard time telling their family in other states what was happening. The helicopters kept flying over the cities. Families with kids were stuck on the rooftops, waiting to be rescued.

The heavy rain started on Monday and will continue until at least Saturday, according to Marcelo Seluchi, the main weather expert at Brazil’s public television network.

On Thursday night, Governor Eduardo Leite warned the people of the state, called gauchos, about the continued heavy rains and flooding. He said that things were going to get worse in Porto Alegre.

“I feel really sad, just like every gaucho does,” he said. As governor, I promise to stay strong and make sure we don’t fail. We are working hard and staying focused to make sure we get everything done.

The weather in South America is influenced by a natural event called El Niño. El Niño warms the water in the Pacific Ocean near the Equator. In the past, El Niño has caused dry weather in the north and heavy rain in the south of Brazil.

This year, the effects of El Niño have been really severe, causing a very bad drought in the Amazon. Researchers say that extreme weather is happening more often because of people’s impact on the climate.

  • Brazilian police detain alleged masterminds in the death of iconic councilwoman

Brazilian police detain alleged masterminds in the death of iconic councilwoman

The police in Brazil has arrested two men who are believed to have ordered the killing of a well-liked councilwoman in Rio de Janeiro in 2018. People have been asking for justice for a long time, so this arrest is a big step.

The killing of Marielle Franco, a 38-year-old Black, bisexual city councilwoman in a shooting from a moving car, greatly affected Brazil and was felt around the world.

The police found out that a government official and his brother were arrested because they are suspected of planning an attack on someone named Franco. Both are said to be associated with gangs that charge people for protection and other services illegally.

Ubiratan Guedes, the lawyer for Domingos Brazúo, said his client is not guilty of the accusations. “He said he didn’t know Marielle and had no connection with her,” he told reporters on Sunday.

Attorneys for Chiquinho Brazúo and Rivaldo Barbosa said their clients did not do anything wrong, as reported by the local media. Chiquinho Brazúo was on Rio’s council and is now a congressman, and Rivaldo Barbosa is a former police chief.

Brazil’s Justice Minister Ricardo Lewandowski said that the reason for the crime is difficult to understand because the Brazúos group has many different interests. He mentioned that investigations have indicated that the politician Chiquinho Brazúo was particularly angry about a bill that his former colleague Franco proposed at the city council regarding the regulation of land for public housing in Rio.

The minister said we know who did this terrible crime and it is related to politics. He also said that four other people had their documents taken. He said that one of them is a police detective named Giniton Lages who also looked into the case. Lewandowski also said that the men who were put in jail before will be moved from Rio to the main city Brasilia.

The men who might have ordered Franco’s killing were arrested four days after Brazil’s Supreme Court approved a deal for the person who shot her. He was arrested with the driver in 2019.

The investigation into Franco’s murder had been problematic for many years. The police in Rio couldn’t solve the case even after they arrested and charged the shooter and the driver. The main detectives were replaced four times before February 2023. The government tried to take over the case, but they weren’t allowed to. This made people think someone was trying to stop the investigation. Lewandowski said this.

The driver confessed to killing Franco and her driver. The person who shot, a former police officer named Ronnie Lessa, made a deal with the police in January and his confession led to the arrests on Sunday.

Barbosa, the person in charge of Rio’s police when the murder happened, was arrested for supposedly getting in the way of the investigation, federal police chief Andrei Rodrigues said in a press conference.

“He tried hard to steer the investigation away from the people who ordered the killing,” Rodrigues said. Before, Franco’s wife Monica Benicio said Barbosa expressed his condolences to her after her wife was killed, and promised to work hard to find the people responsible.

In 2008, Franco worked as an assistant to Marcelo Freixo, who was a lawmaker at that time. Freixo was leading a special committee looking into militias in Rio’s state assembly. Freixo’s last report said that 226 people, including politicians and government workers, were accused of being in a militia, including Domingos Brazão. Although Brazão was in the report, he was not accused of anything.

Violence related to politics happens a lot in Rio. These killings are usually connected to arguments over land and politics. However, these cases usually are not solved and don’t cause as much public outcry as Franco’s death did. She was becoming very popular in politics and was known for speaking out against police mistreatment of people in poor neighborhoods called favelas.

Franco, known by her first name, grew up in a favela called Mare near Rio’s airport. She started working for human rights after her friend was killed by a stray bullet during a fight between police and drug dealers. She worked for a company called Freixo looking into organized crime and then became a member of Rio’s city council in 2016. She continued to listen to and pass on complaints about police mistreatment, until just a few days before she was murdered.

She was one of the few Black women on the council. Some people didn’t like her confidence and being there, but she didn’t let that bother her.

She was leaving an event to help Black girls, when a car drove up next to hers and started shooting. Franco and her driver, Anderson Gomes, died right away.

“Freixo said on X, formerly Twitter, that they picked Marielle because she is a Black woman and they thought they wouldn’t get caught. ” He said big groups of people came together the day after she was killed to remember her, and the people who killed her didn’t understand how important Marielle was.

The killing of Franco and the hope she stood for made her a symbol of the fight against the government in Brazil and other countries. Many people protested to show their anger, her image was put on walls and T-shirts, a street sign in Rio was named after her, and her sister became Brazil’s minister of racial equality.

The Brazúo brothers’ political group is linked to a part of the city where militias have been in charge for a long time. These militias were started by former police officers who wanted to fight crime in their neighborhoods using guns. They started to force shop owners to give them money and pay for things like internet, gas, and cable TV. Recently, they have started taking over land and building properties illegally.

The lower house of Brazil will soon vote on whether to keep lawmaker Chiquinho Brazão in prison. He could be released if 257 people vote in favor of it during the ongoing investigation. Brazão is a strong supporter of former President Jair Bolsonaro and will probably get a lot of support from other people who think the same way.

Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2024 hopefuls defeated by Brazil

England suffered their first defeat since the World Cup as teenage star Endrick came off the bench to secure Brazil a late victory against Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2024 hopefuls.

The highly anticipated friendly, dominated by the controversy over an altered St George’s flag on the new shirt and speculation about the manager’s future, failed to live up to expectations.

    Southgate’s injury-hit side survived a few scares before 17-year-old Endrick’s first senior international goal secured a 1-0 win at a sold-out Wembley, ending England’s 10-match unbeaten run.

Brazil, under new boss Dorival Junior, had the better chances in a stop-start game, with Lucas Paqueta hitting the post and Vinicius Jr and Raphinha also going close.

The night started with a minute’s applause to honor the recent passing of football figures such as Stan Bowles, Ron Baynham, Mario Zagallo, and Terry Venables.

Brazil, on a run of three straight losses, showed promise under their new manager, with Rodrygo and Vinicius Jr posing early threats.

England struggled to create clear chances, with Ollie Watkins and Phil Foden unable to test the Brazilian defense effectively.

Brazil continued to press, with Paqueta coming close to scoring before the break with a shot that went just wide.

Both teams made changes in the second half, including England giving 18-year-old Kobbie Mainoo his debut.

In the 80th minute, a defensive error by Lewis Dunk allowed Andreas Pereira to set up Vinicius Jr, whose shot was saved by Jordan Pickford, only for Endrick to score the rebound.

England pushed for an equalizer, but Brazil held on for the win, marking England’s first defeat at Wembley since the Euro 2020 penalty shoot-out loss to Italy.

  • Ex-AC Milan Robinho to serve 9 year rape sentence in Brazil – Court rules

Ex-AC Milan Robinho to serve 9 year rape sentence in Brazil – Court rules

A majority of judges on a Brazilian court upheld the rape conviction of former AC Milan and Brazil striker Robinho on Wednesday, ruling that he must serve a nine-year prison sentence in Brazil.

The decision, made by judges on Brazil’s Superior Court of Justice, was reached with a vote of 9-2.

Robinho, now 40 years old, was convicted in Italy for his involvement in a group sexual assault in 2013 during his time at AC Milan.

As Brazil does not extradite its nationals, Italy sought his imprisonment in his home country. One of the factors considered by Brazil’s superior court was whether Robinho’s case falls within the country’s immigration law, enacted in 2017.

Robinho’s lawyer, José Eduardo Rangel de Alckim, has stated that they will appeal the decision to Brazil’s Supreme Court and will request that Robinho remain out of prison during the appeal process.

“Robinho is available and willing to appear anytime before the judges. If an officer gets there, he will comply. He will not oppose,” Alckim said.

“Our first concern is to suspend the immediate arrest order. We will ask for the sentence to be executed after the appeal decision has been made.”

Francisco Falcão, the initial judge to cast a vote, advocated for Robinho to fulfill his sentence in Brazil.

He emphasized the importance of accountability, stating that the former player should not evade punishment. Falcão also cautioned against potential diplomatic tensions between Brazil and Italy if the sentence remains unfulfilled.

“There’s no obstacle to validate the execution of his sentence. It was confirmed by a court in Milan, which is the competent authority in this case,” Falcão said. “The conviction is final. The defendant was not put on trial in absence in Italy, he had representation.”

Robinho resides in Santos, located outside of Sao Paulo, and surrendered his passport to Brazilian authorities in March 2023. Despite the court’s decision, he maintains his innocence, asserting that his sexual encounter with the woman at a Milan bar was consensual. Lawyer Jacopo Gnocchi, who represented the victim, expressed satisfaction with the ruling by the Brazilian court.

“We believe that this is the fair conclusion of a case that took place in Italy, with assurances for all the defendants who were then found guilty,” Gnocchi told Brazilian news website UOL.

“We respected and we understood that the Brazilian Constitution does not allow the extradition (of its own citizens), but that does not change the fact that when the sentence is final it is fair… that the sentence is applied.”

  • Neymar’s father set to pay a €1m bail to facilitate Dani Alves’ release from prison

Neymar’s father set to pay a €1m bail to facilitate Dani Alves’ release from prison

Neymar’s father has reportedly agreed to pay a €1 million bail to secure Dani Alves’ release from prison, as per LaVanguardia (via Barca Universal).

Alves, the former Barcelona player, received a four-and-a-half-year sentence for sexual assault and has served over a year behind bars.

During the trial, Alves changed his testimony several times, initially denying, and later admitting to having intercourse with the victim while trying to hide his infidelity.

This led to the breakdown of his marriage, with his wife, Joana Sanz, filing for divorce.

Despite the prosecution seeking a nine-year prison term under Spain’s revised consent laws, a judge allowed Alves to be released on bail pending his appeal, as his lawyer plans to contest the sentence.

Alves was granted bail under the condition that he would not attempt to flee or tamper with evidence. However, he has been issued a restraining order, requiring him to stay at least 1,000 metres away from the victim.

LaVanguardia disclosed that it was Neymar’s father who posted the bail.

“I am really dissatisfied with this decision. We will file an appeal because we believe it is not in accordance with the law. Justice is being done for the rich. It is scandalous that they free someone because they can get €1 million in no time.”

Earlier this month, the ex-president had to give up his passport because he is being investigated for trying to change the results of the October 2022 election and convincing military leaders to join a coup.

After he didn’t win the vote against the left-winger Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, many of his supporters broke into government buildings in the capital Brasília. They stole things and damaged the buildings.

  • Israel denounces Lula of Brazil for comparing Gaza War to Holocaust

Israel denounces Lula of Brazil for comparing Gaza War to Holocaust

Israel is angry at Brazil’s president for saying Israel is killing a lot of people in Gaza, and that it’s like the Holocaust.

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said that in Israel’s military campaign, there was a strong army fighting against women and children.

The foreign minister of Israel said that Lula’s comments were antisemitic and that he is not welcome in the country until he takes back what he said.

The top Jewish group in Brazil also disapproved of Lula’s remarks.

Lula, who was at an African Union meeting in Ethiopia, said the situation in Gaza with the Palestinian people is unlike anything from the past. It really happened when Hitler chose to kill the Jews.

“It’s not a fight between soldiers. ” It’s a fight between a strong army and women and children.

The experienced politician on the liberal side criticized Hamas for attacking Israel on 7 October, killing over 1,200 people and taking 253 hostages.

But he has been openly against Israel’s military attack, which the health ministry in Gaza says has killed more than 28,800 people, mostly women and children.

His most recent words come after Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised to continue attacking Rafah – the southernmost city in Gaza, where around 1. 5 million people have fled – even though there is more and more pressure from other countries.

Israel’s Foreign Minister Israel Katz said they will remember and not forgive.

“It is a very harmful attack on Jewish people. ” From me and the people of Israel – tell President Lula that he is not welcome in Israel until he takes back what he said.

Mr Netanyahu said that Lula’s comments were making the Holocaust seem less important and trying to hurt the Jewish people and Israel’s right to protect itself.

“He said it’s not okay to compare Israel to the Holocaust of the Nazis and Hitler. ”

Hitler’s Nazi government killed six million Jewish people in the 1930s and 1940s.

Israel asked the Brazilian ambassador to come for a meeting on Monday.

The main Jewish organization in Brazil, the Brazilian Israelite Confederation, said that Lula’s comments were a twisted version of the truth that hurt the memory of Holocaust victims and their descendants.

Lula supported South Africa’s accusation of genocide against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) last year.

In January, judges at the ICJ said that South Africa can keep going with its case against Israel.

The court told Israel to stop its military from doing things that could be considered genocidal, to stop and punish actions that encourage genocide, and to make sure the people of Gaza receive help.

However, the court did not demand that Israel stop its military operations in Gaza right away.

Brazil and South Africa are part of a group called Brics. It’s a team of important developing countries that are working together to challenge richer Western nations.

The World Health Organization said that the Nasser hospital in Gaza can no longer work after it was attacked by Israel. The IDF said it did a careful and small operation and blamed Hamas for using hospitals for terrorism.

“Right now, people are trying to make Israel and Hamas stop fighting in Cairo. But the people from Qatar who are helping don’t think it’s going very well. “

  • Judge in Brazil fines construction firm R$240m over collapsed building

Judge in Brazil fines construction firm R$240m over collapsed building

In the city of São Paulo, a judge has imposed fines totaling R$240 million ($48.3 million; £38.3 million) on officials and construction firms in response to a catastrophic building site collapse.

The tragedy occurred in 2007, claiming the lives of seven individuals when a massive sinkhole suddenly emerged, engulfing pedestrians and vehicles. The incident transpired as workers were excavating a tunnel to expand the metro system in the Pinheiros neighborhood, leading to a sudden collapse of the earth.

The judge attributed the disaster to “negligent” and “hazardous” actions, emphasizing that project leaders disregarded warnings from experts who stressed the urgent need for support structures in the tunnel. Despite these warnings, construction continued hastily in a bid to expedite the project.

Former executives of São Paulo’s Metrô, an engineer, and a construction inspector, alongside six companies, were among those ordered to pay compensation. Even one worker, who tragically passed away in 2018, was held liable posthumously, with the judge mandating restitution from his heirs.

The sinkhole, spanning 2,200 square meters (23,680 square feet), swallowed a minibus, demolished seven homes, and displaced around 200 individuals. Aerial images of the site depicted the magnitude of the crater, with vehicles submerged within.

Prosecutors emphasized the profound impact of the disaster on São Paulo’s populace, describing the trauma as “extraordinarily intense” for Brazil’s most populous city.

Despite the verdict, those convicted are anticipated to file appeals against the ruling.

  • Ex-leader of Brazil Bolsonaro’s passport to be confiscated

Ex-leader of Brazil Bolsonaro’s passport to be confiscated

The former president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, has been told to give up his passport within 24 hours as the police are still looking into the 2023 incident when his supporters attacked the Congress.

A lawyer for the ex-leader said Mr. Bolsonaro will follow the order given by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes.

Mr Bolsonaro was in the United States when the attack on Congress happened.

He said before that he was unfairly targeted by the law.

In March 2023, two months after the Congress attack, the ex-president came back to Brazil. He is being investigated for several things.

In June, he was told he can’t run for office for eight years because he questioned Brazil’s electronic voting system without evidence.

However, most attention has been focused on the probe of the events on 8 January 2023, when his followers – who were upset that he had barely lost the election to his opponent on the left – attacked Congress, the Supreme Court, and the presidential palace in Brasília.

The federal police in Brazil didn’t give much information but said they were doing an operation on Thursday to stop a criminal group that was trying to take over the government.

As part of the operation, they were searching many buildings and arresting four people. They did not say who the arrested people are.

The news said that two people who used to work for Mr. Bolsonaro, Filipe Martins and Marcelo Câmara, have been taken into custody.

In the last year, over 1,400 people were accused of being involved in the riots, but only a small number have been found guilty.

Lula of Brazil fires deputy chief of intelligence amid spying investigation

Brazil’s President Lula fired the second-in-command of the national intelligence agency and four other leaders.

Authorities are still looking into allegations that the agency, Abin, spied on people who were against the ex-president Jair Bolsonaro.

Alessandro Moretti, a deputy, is accused of giving information to a former boss of Abin named Alexandre Ramagem, who is also a member of the same party as Mr.

Mr Bolsonaro says he and his family are being unfairly treated.

Lula said his government doesn’t tell the federal police what to do.

The scandal started on Thursday when Brazil’s highest court released documents accusing Abin of secretly watching important political and legal figures who spoke out against the former president.

Three Supreme Court judges and a speaker of Brazil’s lower house of Congress were reportedly being spied on illegally.

Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said that the police found evidence that Mr. Bolsonaro’s son Carlos was involved in ordering illegal spying as part of a political group.

The judge allowed police to search Carlos’ home and offices on Monday. Carlos is a city councillor in Rio de Janeiro.

Carlos Bolsonaro’s lawyer did not answer right away when the Associated Press asked for a comment.

Last week, the police looked for evidence in Mr. Ramagem’s office and house. He says he didn’t do anything wrong. This is according to Reuters news agency.

The police think Abin was using a software called FirstMile from Israel to secretly watch people’s mobile phones.

Experienced leftist Lula barely won against Mr. Bolsonaro, a very conservative politician, in a tense presidential election on 30 October 2022.

This new investigation adds to the legal troubles of Mr Bolsonaro, who has been banned from running for office for eight years after questioning Brazil’s electronic voting system without evidence.

  • Miners ordered to pay $9.7 billion for dam accident in Brazil

Miners ordered to pay $9.7 billion for dam accident in Brazil

A judge in Brazil has told big mining companies BHP and Vale, along with their joint venture Samarco, to pay a lot of money for causing a dam to burst in 2015.

The dam in the south-east of the country broke and caused a big mudslide that killed 19 people.

The dam also made the Rio Doce river very dirty, making it hard for the water to flow to the ocean.

It was not clear at first how much money each company has to pay.

Judge Vinicius Cobucci said the companies are responsible for causing emotional pain to the people affected by the incident.

He said that the money, which will be changed to account for the increase in prices since 2015, will be put into a state fund and used for projects and plans in the area affected by the dam collapse.

The decision was made after state and federal public prosecutors filed a lawsuit.

Vale said to the media that they didn’t know about the decision yet.

The company said that as of December last year, the Renova Foundation has paid out 34. 7bn reais for compensation.

BHP and Samarco did not answer the media’s questions right away.

The decision lets the companies ask for a review of the ruling.

Samarco is a partnership between two companies, BHP from Australia and Vale from Brazil.

The disaster in Minas Gerais state was very bad and caused 700 people to leave their homes. It is one of the worst environmental disasters in the country.

When the dam broke, a lot of thick, red toxic mud flooded and destroyed the village of Bento Rodrigues.

It also made the Rio Doce river and Atlantic Ocean 650km away dirty, harming animals and making the drinking water bad for hundreds of thousands of people.

A report from 2016 said that the dam collapsed because it was badly designed.

The report, requested by Samarco’s owners BHP and Vale, did not say who caused the disaster.

Walls of dams that hold mining waste are usually made of a mix of sandy and clay-like material.

The report found that the way the Fundão dam was built in 2011 and 2012 didn’t let water drain properly, which caused the dam to break on 5 November 2015.

The sand in the dam walls got very wet and started acting like a liquid, which is called “liquefaction”.

A little earthquake on the same day as the dam burst might have made the dam break even faster, the report said.

The disaster caused people to closely examine the safety rules in the mining industry.

BHP and Vale are being sued by over 700,000 people in the UK.

In January 2019, a dam owned by Vale broke in the same state, close to the town of Brumadinho. This caused 270 people to die.

  • Brazil dismisses interim coach Diniz following Ancelotti’s rejection

Brazil dismisses interim coach Diniz following Ancelotti’s rejection

On Friday, Brazil’s interim coach, Fernando Diniz, faced dismissal from the country’s soccer federation (CBF).

According to a statement from the CBF, President Ednaldo Rodrigues communicated to Diniz his intention to “advance the process of choosing a permanent coach.”

Diniz took on the role of interim coach for the five-time World Cup winners in July, under a one-year contract.

The federation initially aimed to secure Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti as a permanent replacement, envisioning his availability after the conclusion of his contract with the Spanish giants this summer.

However, Ancelotti recently extended his contract with Madrid through 2026.

With Ancelotti out of contention, Rodrigues has opted to expedite the search for a permanent replacement for Tite, who resigned after Brazil’s quarterfinal exit in the 2022 World Cup.

“The CBF thanks Fernando Diniz for his work, his dedication, his seriousness and for the challenge of revamping Brazil,” a statement said.

The decision was taken one day after Rodrigues returned to his role following a decision from Brazil’s Supreme Court.

Rodrigues and all his executives had been removed from their jobs on Dec. 7 after a Rio de Janeiro court ruling on irregularities in the 2022 election process.

São Paulo coach Dorival Junior is the current front-runner to take over as permanent head coach, with Rodrigues having already spoken to São Paulo president Julio Casares, sources told ESPN Brasil.

São Paulo are unwilling to let their coach leave for free and have asked the CBF to pay a fee to terminate Dorival’s contract, which will be around R$4.5 million ($920,000), sources said.

Diniz remained the head coach of Fluminense during his time with Brazil, leading them to the Copa Libertadores title in November.

However, he oversaw a disappointing start to Brazil’s campaign to qualify for the 2026 World Cup in the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

Brazil have lost three of their first six matches and sit in sixth place in the standings.

Only the top six teams qualify automatically from South America, with seventh place entering a playoff.

  • Four-time World Cup champion from Brazil passes away at age 92

Four-time World Cup champion from Brazil passes away at age 92

Brazilian soccer star Mario Zagallo, who won four World Cups as a player and coach, has passed away at the age of 92.

Zagallo was a player in the Brazil team that won two World Cups in a row in 1958 and 1962. He played in both final games.

He led the team with famous players like Pele, Jairzinho, and Carlos Alberto to win in 1970.

Zagallo won the World Cup as a coach in 1994 with Carlos Alberto Parreira.

After that competition, he became the Brazil manager again and took them to the final in 1998. They lost to the host team, France.

Zagallo won the World Cup as a player and coach. Others who have done the same are Franz Beckenbauer from Germany and Didier Deschamps from France.

“We are really sad to say that our four-time world champion Mario Jorge Lobo Zagallo has passed away,” according to a post on his official Instagram account.

“A loving and caring man who was a dedicated father, a kind grandfather, a supportive father-in-law, a loyal friend, a successful professional, and an amazing person. ” Huge statue “A patriot who leaves behind a history of amazing accomplishments. ”
    Important person in Brazil’s history.

Brazil has won the most World Cup titles, with five in total. Zagallo has played a big role in their success.

As a young person doing national service, he was one of almost 200,000 people at Maracana Stadium who watched Brazil lose to Uruguay in the final match of the 1950 World Cup.

In 2013, Zagallo told BBC Sport, “I will never forget that day. ”

He played his first game for Brazil when he was 26, just before the 1958 tournament. He was a very important player in the team. In the final game, 17-year-old Pele inspired Brazil to win against Sweden, with Zagallo scoring the fourth goal in a 5-2 win.

Zagallo was the only player left from Brazil’s 1958 World Cup-winning team who played in the final.

When Pele got hurt in the 1962 World Cup, Zagallo stepped up and helped defend during the final game, which was unusual for forwards to do at that time. Brazil won against Czechoslovakia.

Zagallo stopped playing soccer in 1965. He played for America, Flamengo, and Botafogo. He also won 33 games for his country.

He began managing at Botafogo and then became the Brazil boss at 38 years old, right before the 1970 World Cup in Mexico.

The smart Zagallo, also called ‘The Professor’ and ‘Old Wolf’, put together a team with Pele, Jairzinho, Gerson, Tostao, and Rivellino, who were really good at attacking, and made them very hard to beat.

Brazil won all six of their games and easily beat Italy 4-1 in the final game.

Zagallo continued as the coach for Brazil in the 1974 World Cup in West Germany, and they ended up in fourth place.

After that, he coached teams in Brazil and also coached national teams in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. He helped the United Arab Emirates qualify for their first World Cup in 1990. Then he worked as a coordinator for Parreira’s coaching team before the 1994 World Cup.

Brazil won their fourth title by beating Italy in the finals in the United States.

Zagallo’s team was expected to win the 1998 tournament, but France beat them 3-0 in the final. The star player, Ronaldo, had a strange illness on the day of the game.

Brazil’s team won the World Cup in 2002 in Japan and South Korea. Luiz Felipe Scolari was the coach and Zagallo was there to help as a special adviser.

Mourinho addresses alleged move to Brazil

Roma coach José Mourinho has clarified that there has been no contact from the Brazil Football Confederation (CBF) regarding the national team job in July 2024. The CBF is actively searching for a full-time manager to succeed interim coach Fernando Diniz, whose contract concludes in the summer.

With Carlo Ancelotti extending his contract with Real Madrid until June 2026, reports suggest that the CBF has approached Mourinho’s agent, Jorge Mendes, to inquire about the Portuguese coach’s availability.

Despite these reports, Mourinho has explicitly stated that he has not been directly contacted by the CBF at this point in time.

“I don’t know if it’s true that Brazil wants me,” Mourinho said. “They haven’t spoken to me. I asked my agent not to tell me anything about any contacts.”

Ednaldo Rodrigues, upon his reinstatement as CBF president, has identified selecting a full-time national team manager as his initial priority. Reports indicate that São Paulo coach Dorival Júnior is his favoured candidate for the position.

Mourinho, currently under contract with Roma until June 30, has stated that he has not yet made a decision about his future.

Amid reports that Roma are looking for a new manager, the former Chelsea and Manchester United coach said: “I have no reason to think that the [Roma owners] Friedkin family is not honest; I trust the ownership 100%. It doesn’t mean I’ll stay here 100% but it means they’re not looking for someone else behind my back.”

Having joined Roma in the summer of 2021, the 60-year-old Mourinho has rejected coaching offers from both Portugal and Saudi Arabia.

  • Break at Salt mine in Brazil raises fears of collapse

Break at Salt mine in Brazil raises fears of collapse

A break at a rock salt mine in north-eastern Brazil has made people more worried that the whole mine might collapse soon.

A video taken by the civil defence authority showed dirty water bubbling up in the Mundaú lagoon near the city of Maceió, where the mine is located.

The mine was closed and it belonged to a big company from Brazil called Braskem.

In the last 40 years, many people have been forced to leave their homes because the rock salt mining has caused a lot of damage.

The break in the mine happened at 13:15 local time (16:15 GMT) on Sunday, which let water from the lagoon get inside.

The mayor said the area impacted was 60 meters wide.

Braskem said that cameras watching the area around Mine 18 saw something strange happening with the water in the lagoon’s ground.

The mayor of Maceió, João Henrique Caldas, flew in a helicopter to look at the damage in the lagoon.

He said there was a break in the ground about 60 meters (200 feet) wide, but it didn’t put anyone in danger because the people who lived nearby had already left.

He said that the mine was supposed to become stable.

However, people who live in the city are worried about how quickly the ground above the mine is sinking.

The ground sank 2. 35 meters between November 30th and December 10th, according to official measurements.

Maceió’s civil defence office said on November 29th that Mine 18 might collapse soon, but the city has had issues with rock salt mining for a long time.

In 2018, cracks started to appear in the buildings and roads of five neighborhoods. In the past five years, more than 14,000 buildings had to be emptied, and about 60,000 people were affected.

The damage was first thought to be caused by strong rain and shaking of the ground. In 2020, a government study found that Braskem’s rock salt mining caused cracks and the ground to sink.

For many years, the Brazilian petrochemical company has run many mines in the area.

Rock salt is taken from deep underground and used to make PVC. When it’s removed, it can leave holes that make the soil sink.

Braskem disagreed with the results of the study done by experts from the Brazilian Geological Service, saying they were not accurate.

However, the company shut down its mines in Maceió in 2019 and recently agreed to pay the city 1. 7 billion reias ($343 million; £273 million) for damages caused by land sinking and relocation.

The town leaders want to talk to the company about paying for more things if the mine collapses.

Barca poised to welcome Brazilian forward Vitor Roque in January

Brazilian forward Vitor Roque, 18, is poised to make a move to Spanish powerhouse Barcelona in January. Club Athletico Paranaense announced on Saturday that Roque would play his final home game against Santos on Sunday before embarking on his European journey.

Barcelona had secured an agreement to acquire Roque from Athletico in July for a reported 40 million euros plus 21 million in add-ons, with the young player committing to a seven-year contract.

However, Barcelona’s financial constraints and struggles with La Liga’s Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations had hindered the registration of new signings in the past two seasons, casting uncertainty on Roque’s status.

The club, though, has managed to free up space in the salary cap due to a long-term knee injury to midfielder Gavi. This development will allow Barcelona to include Roque in their squad in January, providing much-needed depth behind the 36-year-old forward Robert Lewandowski.

Roque, recovering from a two-month ankle injury, returned to action last weekend with a 26-minute appearance in a goalless draw against Vasco. In Friday’s match against Cruzeiro, he played for 45 minutes and scored his first goal since September.

Hailing from the same Cruzeiro academy that produced the legendary Ronaldo Nazario, Roque joined Athletico at the beginning of 2022, accumulating 28 goals in 80 appearances.

In the previous year, he played a pivotal role in helping the team reach the Copa Libertadores final.

Having earned his first cap for Brazil in March, Roque made history as the youngest debutant for the five-time world champions at 18 years and 25 days old, a record previously held by Ronaldo, who debuted for Brazil at 17 in 1994.

“It’s crazy and it needs to end now” – Messi fumes after Brazil-Argentina qualifier altercation

Lionel Messi recently used social media to condemn the “excessive repression” faced by Argentina fans in Brazil following a tumultuous incident at the Maracana stadium.

During the World Cup qualifier in Rio de Janeiro, the match was delayed for more than 30 minutes due to police intervention prompted by Albiceleste supporters booing the Brazilian national anthem.

This incident set the stage for a heated encounter, ultimately won by Argentina through a Nicolas Otamendi goal. However, Messi, in his post-match remarks, highlighted the plight of fans who endured the repercussions after the game concluded.

The 2023 Ballon d’Or winner wrote on Instagram, “This team continues to make history… Great victory in the Maracana, although it will be marked by the repression of the Argentinians once again in Brazil. This can’t be tolerated; it’s crazy and it needs to end now!!”

The intense rivalry between Brazil and Argentina in world football has once again erupted into violence, marking another instance of clashes between fans from these two nations this month.

The recent Copa Libertadores final between Fluminense and Boca Juniors witnessed chaotic scenes of violence on Rio’s Copacabana beach, triggering a harsh response from Brazilian authorities.

Adding to the uncertainty is the looming question of Lionel Messi’s future at the international level.

The Inter Miami star, set to turn 39 during the 2026 World Cup, faces speculation about his participation, with some suggesting it hinges on his team’s performance in the upcoming Copa America.

Moreover, Messi may find himself without a mentor for both tournaments following the surprising hint of resignation from manager Lionel Scaloni on Tuesday night.

The combination of these factors adds a layer of unpredictability to Messi’s international career.

  • Brazil registers its highest temperature ever

Brazil registers its highest temperature ever

Brazil experienced its highest ever temperature of 44. 8C (1126F) during a very hot heatwave.

On Sunday, in a town called Araçuaí, a new record was made in the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil.

The unusual weather is caused by El Niño and changes in the climate.

Predictors say that the weather will probably not be as hot this week.

According to the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet), CNN Brasil reported that only three capital cities will have temperatures close to 40 degrees Celsius.

The government agency reported that the temperature in Araçuaí reached 44. 8C, which is higher than the country’s previous record of 44. 7C in 2005

The weather is very hot and there are warnings for people to be careful, even though it’s still a month before summer starts in the southern part of the world. Energy use in Brazil has gone up a lot because people are using more electricity to stay cool.

The hot weather caused Taylor Swift to cancel a concert in Rio de Janeiro because a fan got sick and died before the show on Friday.

According to the people in charge, Ana Clara Benevides Machado, who is 23 years old, asked for help at the stadium because she was not feeling well. She was moved to the hospital but passed away an hour later.

A recent study found that the temperature in the country was higher than usual from July to October.

Crazy weather is happening a lot more and getting stronger in many places because of climate change.

Scientists say that heatwaves are getting longer and stronger in many places because people keep releasing gases that warm the planet. They think this will keep happening in the future.

Right now, the Earth is experiencing El Niño, which usually makes the global temperatures rise.

  • Brazil experiences ‘intolerable’ heatwave

    Brazil experiences ‘intolerable’ heatwave

Red warnings have been issued for nearly 3,000 cities in Brazil, which are suffering from an unprecedented heat wave.

City authorities said Rio de Janeiro recorded a temperature of 42. 5C on Sunday – a record for November – and high humidity on Tuesday meant a temperature of 58. More than a hundred million people have been affected by the heat, which is expected to last at least until Friday.

Authorities believe the cause is due to the El Niño phenomenon and climate change. The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) said the city of São Paulo experienced an average temperature of 37. 3°C on Tuesday afternoon.

“I’m exhausted, it’s difficult,” Riquelme da Silva, 22, told AFP news agency on the street there. “When I get home, I’m cold. If I don’t wake up, I’m too tired, and I even have trouble sleeping. “

Dora, a 60-year-old street vendor, described the heat as “unbearable” for those working outside. Inmet has issued a red alert for much of the country.

These suggest temperatures could be 5°C above average for more than 5 days and could pose a serious health risk. The heatwave, more than a month before summer begins in the Southern Hemisphere, has seen Brazil’s energy consumption hit record levels as people try to cool down.

Inmet research published last week found that average temperatures in the country were above the historical average from July to October.

Extreme weather conditions are becoming more frequent and severe in many parts of the world due to climate change. Scientists say heat waves are becoming longer and more intense in many places and this is expected to continue as humans continue to emit greenhouse gases that heat the planet.

Meanwhile, Earth is currently in an El Niño climate phase, a period in which global temperatures typically increase.

Neymar poses with young fan while in crutches and wearing huge protective cast

Last night, Neymar left the Estadio Centenario in an unfortunate state, relying on crutches after suffering an injury during Brazil’s 2-0 defeat to Uruguay in a World Cup qualifying match.

He was visibly in pain and was seen departing the stadium with a sizable protective cast enveloping his injured leg.

Despite his evident discomfort, the Al-Hilal star displayed his kindness by taking a moment to pose for a photo with a young fan.

The distressing moment occurred when the Brazilian superstar had to be stretchered off the field, deeply moved to tears, due to an apparent knee injury.

This incident adds to a lengthy history of injury setbacks for the 31-year-old attacker.

Brazil, following Neymar’s injury, went on to lose the match to Uruguay, with Darwin Nunez and Nicolas de la Cruz scoring the vital goals.

As a result, the Selecao now stands at seven points after four matches, while Argentina maintains a five-point lead at the top of the table.

The duration of Neymar’s absence from the game is uncertain at this point, but it is confirmed that he will not be available for Al-Hilal’s upcoming match against Al-Khaleej on Friday.

Neymar fumes after fan threw popcorn at him following Brazil-Venezuela stalemate

Neymar was escorted off the field by his fellow Brazil teammates after he was hit in the head by a box of popcorn thrown by a fan in the stands.

The Brazilian fans at the Arena Pantanal in Cuiaba expressed their disappointment with the national team’s performance with jeers, whistles, and, in the case of one individual, a box of popcorn hurled in Neymar’s direction as he made his way to the dressing room.

Struck by the popcorn box, Neymar looked into the crowd, confronted the presumed perpetrator, and pointed an accusatory finger in their direction.

This incident occurred at the end of a 2026 World Cup qualifier, where the Selecao had to settle for a disappointing 1-1 draw against Venezuela on their home turf.

In that match, Neymar had delivered the corner that allowed Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes to score the opening goal, but Eduard Bello managed an acrobatic equaliser for the visiting team.

It’s worth noting that despite becoming Brazil’s all-time leading goalscorer, surpassing the legendary Pele, Neymar has been struggling to find his top form since his summer transfer from PSG to Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal.

  • Neymar, Vinicius team-up excites Brazil’s coach Diniz ahead Venezuela clash

Neymar, Vinicius team-up excites Brazil’s coach Diniz ahead Venezuela clash

Brazil’s interim coach, Fernando Diniz, is eagerly anticipating the prospect of Neymar (31) and Vinicius Jr (23) teaming up in the 2026 World Cup qualifier against Venezuela.

He emphasises his commitment to fostering team unity as he temporarily leads the squad.

Diniz assumed his role after Tite’s departure, which followed Brazil’s quarter-final exit at the World Cup in Qatar. It’s worth noting that Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti is set to take over next year.

Nevertheless, at 49 years old, Diniz, who juggles his responsibilities with Fluminense, remains determined to leave his mark on the national team and maintain their position atop the South American qualifying competition.

“(Neymar and Vinicius) are extremely good players, very intelligent and skilled, and they like each other. There is also Rodrygo, a player of a very high level,” he said.

“We hope they get on well in tomorrow’s game, as they have done in training, and that they can have a great game.”
Vinicius, who usually plays in the same position as Neymar, returns to the squad after missing the first two qualifiers through injury.

“My first interaction with Vinicius was excellent; today he is one of the greatest players in world football. Let’s hope he is comfortable playing,” he added.

Finding balance and building unity is Diniz’s main objective in order to have a “competitive team”.

“I feel a positive camaraderie from the players, who like each other very much, forming that feeling of family. The older ones know how to welcome very well those who arrive; both my committee and the players called up,” he said.

Brazil is set to play against Venezuela in Cuiaba before embarking on a match against Uruguay in Montevideo five days later.

One more to go, and I break the Pele record – Neymar

Neymar has been reflecting on the significance of becoming Brazil’s all-time leading scorer, needing just one more goal to surpass Pele’s record.

Currently, the Al-Hilal forward is tied with his legendary compatriot, both having scored 77 goals for their country.

It seems inevitable that Neymar will soon score his 78th goal, surpassing Pele, who won the World Cup three times.

This historic achievement could potentially occur during a 2026 World Cup qualifying match against Bolivia. Additionally, Brazil is scheduled to face Peru next Tuesday.

Neymar has said of potentially rewriting the record books: “It is hard to know what that record means, but it does mean a lot. No-one ever thought about overcoming that. It is something I will respond to after it is done.”

Neymar’s last outing for Brazil came in their 2022 World Cup quarterfinal defeat to Croatia, with the 31-year-old hinting after that penalty shootout setback that he could bow out with 124 caps to his name.

He has said of carrying on with the Selecao: “After a lot of pressure from family and friends [to return to the national team], you start giving value to everything you did.

“When you are with your people, your family, they put you in your place and make you see it is worth it to continue being happy by wearing Brazil’s shirt.”

Neymar’s debut for Brazil dates back to 2010.

The CBF is hesitant to overly celebrate his achievement of reaching 78 goals, as their records, which vary slightly from the official ones, indicate that Pele has scored 95 goals for the South American nation when considering all of his international appearances.

Brazilian flood results in 31 fatalities

More than thirty people have died because of the heavy rains and floods in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, according to state governor Eduardo Leite on Wednesday.

Leite went to the place affected by the disaster on Wednesday morning. He promised on social media that they will do whatever it takes to rebuild the homes and infrastructure that got destroyed by the flooding.

The storm will keep affecting the area for the rest of the week.

According to a news source from CNN in Brazil, the heavy rains this week are the most severe natural disaster the state has had in 40 years.

The Brazilian weather expert Dr. Maria Clara Sassaki said to CNN Brasil that in just one week, the state received the same amount of rain that was expected for the whole month of September.

This week’s heavy rains in Rio Grande do Sul are the fourth time extreme weather has happened in the past three months, says Leite.

Earlier today, the Ministry of Social Development (MDS) announced that around 50 cities in the southern states have been affected. Almost 80% of Muçum city in Rio Grande do Sul is currently underwater.

On Wednesday, the local authorities warned people about the possibility of a flood around the Jacuí River and the Jacuí Delta.

“The situation is very serious,” MDS Minister Wellington Dias said on X, which is the new name for Twitter.

Brazilian murderer breaks out of US jail after week

Authorities in Pennsylvania are currently searching for a prisoner who managed to escape just one week after being given a lifelong prison sentence for committing a murder.

Danelo Cavalcante, a citizen of Brazil, ran away from Chester County Prison in West Chester early on Thursday.

A week ago, he was sent to prison for the rest of his life because he killed his ex-girlfriend by stabbing her, while her two little children watched.

Cavalcante is being sought after for killing someone in Brazil.

During a news conference on Thursday, the temporary leader of the prison, Howard Holland, did not provide any information about how the escape happened. He mentioned that they are currently conducting an investigation.

He was seen walking on a road in Pocopson Township, close to the prison, about an hour after he ran away.

People who live within a six-mile (9km) distance from the prison were informed about the escape and advised to be very careful. Many police agencies are now searching for him and are using dogs, drones, and helicopters to try and find him.

Chester County district attorney Deb Ryan warned us on Thursday not to get close to him if we see him. Please call 911. People think he is very dangerous.

Authorities say that in April 2021, Cavalcante killed his ex-girlfriend Deborah Brandao by stabbing her in front of her young children, aged four and seven. Brandao was stabbed almost 40 times during the crime.

He got caught by the police a few hours later, after running away to Virginia.

Last week, the Chester County district attorney’s office said in a Facebook post that Brandao had warned that he would tell the police after discovering that Cavalcante had a warrant for murder in Brazil.

MsRyan, who is in charge of law enforcement in Chester County, told the Local Daily News that Cavalcante, a person who used to be part of a gang, is thought to have killed a man in Brazil in 2017 because the man owed him money.

The US Marshals Service and local authorities are giving $10,000 (£7,889) to anyone who can provide helpful information that leads to his capture.

Police raids kill 43 in Brazil

A series of police raids targeting drug gangs across three Brazilian states have resulted in a reported death toll of at least 43 individuals.

In Rio de Janeiro, the most recent operation took place in the Complexo da Penha area, where police engaged in a shoot-out and reportedly killed at least 10 individuals.

Earlier, clashes during a five-day police raid in São Paulo state, known as Operation Shield, resulted in the deaths of 14 people.

In the state of Bahia, in the north-eastern region of Brazil, officials stated that 19 suspects have been killed since the start of the operations on Friday.

The São Paulo state operation led to the arrest of 58 individuals and the seizure of 385kg of narcotics, alongside firearms.

Despite these actions, the response of Brazilian authorities has faced criticism. Justice Minister Flavio Dino expressed concerns that the police’s reaction in Guarujá, São Paulo, was disproportionate to the crime committed.

Throughout these operations, clashes between heavily armed gang members and the police have caused disruption and casualties. The violence has also impacted communities, leading to the closure of schools and suspension of health services due to security concerns.

The raids signal a continuing effort to combat drug-related crime in Brazil, but they have also raised questions about the proportionality of the responses and the broader impact on affected communities.

Brazilian star, ‘Queen Marta’ goes home sad after Brazil-Jamaica game ended in stalemate

Brazil exited the World Cup on Wednesday, with hopes that a new generation of talent will emerge as Marta’s (37) sixth and final Women’s World Cup came to an end in a 0-0 draw against Jamaica, which sent the Caribbean side to the last 16.

Marta, affectionately known as “Queen Marta” in football-mad Brazil, had her teammates vowing for a more fitting farewell for the iconic forward. However, they were unable to break through the Jamaican defense at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium.

Despite being the tournament’s all-time leading scorer with 17 goals, Marta may have been the most frustrated player on the field, as she had opportunities in a match where Brazil needed three points.

Starting on the field for the first time in the tournament, her teammates managed to find her in the area several times, but she couldn’t summon the magical touch she had exhibited in five previous World Cups.

As Jamaica held their ground in defense, Marta’s energy waned, and she was substituted off in the 80th minute to the cheers of anxious Brazilian fans.

Having collected nearly every individual accolade in women’s football, Marta missed out on the World Cup victory she had longed for, extending Brazil’s wait for their first title.

With the team failing to advance from the group stage for the first time in 28 years, concerns will arise regarding their preparations and tactics under the guidance of coach Pia Sundhage (63).

Although contracted for another year, Sundhage admitted that her future with the team might be uncertain. The Swedish coach was direct about Brazil’s need for rejuvenation, a process that will likely proceed without the player who has dominated women’s football in the country for decades.

Sundhage acknowledged that she doesn’t know if Marta intends to continue playing for the national team, but she suspects that Marta’s love for the game might influence her decision to do so.

“Whether she’s good enough to be called up to the national team, let’s see,” said Sundhage.

“As long as I am coaching the national team, I am going to do a lot of work to find new players.

“That means it’s going to be harder for Marta to play going forward.

Four migrants from Nigeria were saved by Brazilian federal police at this same minute after spending 14 days at sea on a ship’s rudder.

The migrants were astonished to hear they had landed in Brazil instead of their intended destination of Europe after setting out from Nigeria.

One of the migrants, Roman Giomene Friday, said “the journey was so dangerous… I would never try it again.”

Four stowaways from Nigeria make it across Atlantic for two weeks on ship’s rudder

The men told the news agency Reuters that they had to ration their meagre food and water for ten days until they were able to survive for four days by drinking seawater.

They boarded the ferry expecting to reach Europe, but instead they arrived in Brazil, which left them, to put it mildly, startled.

The guys fastened themselves to the rudder with a rope and constructed a net around it to keep from falling off while the ship sailed over the Atlantic.

One of the men, 35-year-old Roman Ebimene Friday, claimed that he frequently glanced below to spot “big fish like whales and sharks.”

Sleep was also not an option. One wrong move could be fatal, and it was hard to sleep anyhow with the sound of the engine running.

The men’s first concern was to hide from the crew because they feared that if they were discovered, they would be cast into the water.

Thankgod Opemipo Matthew Yeye, 38, continued, “It was a terrible experience for me.”

It is difficult to be on board. I was trembling from fear. However, I’m here.

The ship was finally located off the coast of the state of Esprito Santo in the southeast, and the sailors were saved.

The guys were all in “precarious health conditions,” according to the force, and were saved by federal police officers at the port of Vitoria.

Each had a different reason for leaving Nigeria, one of the most populous countries in Africa but also one of the most violent and impoverished. The nation has experienced a spike in kidnappings in recent years, and according to one survey, security is one of the top worries among the populace.

Yeye, a Pentecostal priest, claimed that his farm producing peanuts and palm oil was destroyed by heavy flooding, displacing his family.

He expressed optimism that one day they will be able to accompany him to Brazil.

While the other two guys asked to be sent back to Nigeria, Yeye and Friday both requested asylum in Brazil.

They are not the only men. According to the UN department for human rights, 123,300 refugees and migrants travelled across the Mediterranean to reach Europe in 2021.

Deaths are on the rise as people brave choppy waves and bad weather, despite the fact that the number has been down for years.

3,231 individuals at least perished or perished at sea in the Mediterranean and northwest African routes last year.

The agency said that it had “constantly warned of the horrific experiences and dangers faced by refugees and migrants who resort to these journeys.”

“Many of them are people running from conflict, violence, and persecution,” it is said.

  • Brazil controls sports betting, tax businesses despite scandal

Brazil controls sports betting, tax businesses despite scandal

On Tuesday, the Brazilian government issued a provisional decree to legalize sports betting and impose an 18% tax on the revenues of betting companies. This decision comes in the midst of a widespread investigation that has implicated numerous individuals in a match-fixing scandal.

The decree, proposed by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, has been forwarded to the congress for approval. The congress has a 120-day period to vote on it in order for the decree to remain valid. The finance ministry of Brazil anticipates that if the provisional measure is confirmed, the government will collect a minimum of 2 billion Brazilian reals ($420 million) in taxes from betting companies in the next year.

Regarding Brazilian bettors, they will be exempt from paying tax on gains up to approximately $445 on each bet. However, any gains surpassing this amount will be subject to a 30% income tax.

The ruling was issued less than a year after a Goias attorney’s office inquiry revealed that some players had been offered between $10,000 and $20,000 to carry out specific actions, such as obtaining yellow cards and resulting in penalties. Then, alleged crooks would make money on gambling websites.

Brazilian championship sponsor galera.bet CEO Marcos Sabiá expressed his approval of the decision in a statement.

“This decree is welcome because it brings us some regulation and legal protection,” Sabiá said. “It establishes the limits to the operation of betting companies, rights and assurances for betters, the prohibition for companies that do not have a license, and the means for cooperation between authorities and betting companies so we fight match-fixing.”

This year, the inquiry has expanded to include the Brazilian Congress and Federal Police as well as roughly 20 games from the top flight and second divisions of the nation as well as certain smaller state leagues.

The Associated Press was informed by a district attorney in May that the scandal might have an international impact. According to local media, accused perpetrators stated having contacts in Lithuania, Greece, and the United States.

15 soccer players from Brazil’s first and second divisions are among the 31 people accused of participating in the plan who have already been charged by a Goias court.

Its time for older players to step as Ancelotti take over – Brazilian forward Danilo

Defender Danilo (31) emphasized the need for Brazil’s senior players to take on leadership roles as the team operates without a permanent manager.

The Brazilian Football Association (CBF) is still in pursuit of Real Madrid’s Carlo Ancelotti to fill the coaching position left vacant since Tite’s resignation following Brazil’s quarter-final exit in the 2022 World Cup.

In their upcoming match against Guinea in Barcelona, the five-time world champions will be guided by Under-20 manager Ramon Menezes, who also oversaw their 2-1 defeat to Morocco in April.

Danilo expressed that the more experienced players should shoulder greater responsibility during this interim period while the search for a new manager continues.

“Of course the subject surrounding our next manager has dominated everything, because it’s normal that it does,” Danilo said on Friday, after six of the first seven questions of his press conference were about Ancelotti.

“At this moment, when there is caution in deciding who will be the next coach, it is time for us, the more experienced players, to give back for what we have already received from the national team.

“We have the obligation to give a little bit more to maintain stability for those young players who are getting their first opportunities.”

CBF president Ednaldo Rodrigues said on Tuesday that he would hold talks with Ancelotti’s representatives and the club this week and did not rule out waiting until July 2024 to appoint him as coach.

Danilo said that Rodrigues met with the leaders of the Brazil squad that included him, Casemiro, Marquinhos and Alisson, to consult on the possibility of going through the next 12 months with a caretaker manager so the Italian could take over with two years to prepare for the 2026 World Cup.

The Juventus player said they appreciated the opportunity to have their voice heard, but insisted that it was not their job to pick the manager.

“Right now our role is to make whatever the president decides work,” Danilo added.

“This way we will have more tranquillity to work. The president is a guy who listens a lot, is always present and active.”

Brazil president not really happy about Ancelotti’s coaching role

The appointment of Carlo Ancelotti (64) as the new Brazil football coach has faced criticism from Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who suggested that Ancelotti should focus on resolving the issues within the Italian national team instead.

Ancelotti, an Italian coach with an impressive track record, having won the Champions League a record four times, will assume his role before the Copa America in the United States next June, after fulfilling his contractual obligations with Real Madrid.

President Lula da Silva’s comments reflect his belief that Ancelotti should concentrate on addressing the challenges faced by the Italian national team rather than taking charge of the Brazilian team.

However, it remains to be seen how this criticism will impact Ancelotti’s tenure as Brazil’s coach.

“I admire Ancelotti, but he has never been Italy’s national coach,” Lula told TV station SBT on Thursday.

“Why does he not resolve Italy’s problem, who did not qualify for the 2022 World Cup?” added the 77-year-old.

In the interim, Fluminense coach Fernando Diniz will be in charge of Brazil for their opening 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

“I am a fan of Diniz,” said Lula. “He has the personality, the creativity and it is he who commands the dressing room.”

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has opted for Ancelotti believing one of the most successful coaches in European football history will deliver them their sixth World Cup trophy but first since 2002.

The desire is even greater after bitter rivals Argentina won in Qatar last December.

Brazil were knocked out in the quarter-finals and coach Tite stepped down.

“It is very easy to coach a club in Europe with 11 international players in the team,” said Lula.

“What is difficult is to come here and to coach Corinthians (who are in danger of relegation from the top league).

“I would like to see if Ancelotti did a good job with Corinthians.”

Lula is pessimistic that no matter who the coach is they will have a tough time in the World Cup qualifiers with the present generation of Brazil players.

“The problem is not Diniz, the problem is we do not possess today the level of players we had in previous eras,” said Lula.

Ancelotti will be the fourth non-Brazilian to coach Brazil. The last was Argentine Filpo Nunez who was in charge for one game in 1965.

PSG extends Neymar’s leave to aid him resolve legal issues in Brazil

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) forward, Neymar, has been granted an extended leave by the club to address the legal issues he is currently facing with the Brazilian authorities.

The trouble arose when Neymar constructed an artificial lake on his property in Brazil without obtaining the necessary permissions from the appropriate authorities.

Initially expected to return to PSG for the start of pre-season training, Neymar will now take additional time off with the full support of the club.

This decision allows him the necessary space to resolve the matter after being fined €3 million by Brazilian environmental authorities.

Legal proceedings have commenced, and Neymar has a 20-day window to appeal the ruling.

Despite the legal challenge, Neymar is preparing for his seventh season with PSG, and the club has shown solidarity with the player in his efforts to address the situation.

    Neymar involved in another scandal

Meanwhile, Neymar was involved in an altercation at a nightclub in Brazil, just less than two weeks after he was caught cheating on his pregnant girlfriend, Marca reports.

The Paris Saint-Germain striker was seen having a dispute with another man in a nightclub in Rio de Janeiro, where a Thiaguinho concert occurred.

The night ended in turmoil after Neymar’s altercation with another man, in which they pushed and shouted. The intervention of the nightclub security was even required to calm things down between the two.

    Neymar blasted by girlfriend’s sister

Earlier, Sports Brief reported the sister of Neymar’s girlfriend has made their private business public by claiming the Paris Saint-German star refuses to act like a man.

Neymar’s girlfriend is Bruna Biancardi and it is her sister, Bianca Biancardi, who really does not seem to get on well with the Brazilian star.

Bianca resorted to Instagram to criticise the former Barcelona forward for cheating on his pregnant partner, whom he is expecting a baby with in May.

  • Real Madrid’s Ancelotti reportedly agrees to take on Brazil coaching challenge

Real Madrid’s Ancelotti reportedly agrees to take on Brazil coaching challenge

The Brazilians were deeply disappointed by their performance in the 2022 edition of the tournament, where they were knocked out in the quarter-finals by Croatia, while their arch-rivals Argentina went on to win the trophy.

Tite, who had been in charge for six years, decided to step down after their elimination.

After months of negotiations with Ednaldo Rodrigues, the head of the Brazilian Football Federation (CBF), Ancelotti agreed to take over as the coach of Brazil.

Despite previously stating that his role at Real Madrid would be his last after nearly three decades in coaching, Ancelotti’s mindset changed when presented with the opportunity to take on one of the most prestigious and demanding positions in football.

The Brazilian hierarchy cited Ancelotti’s impressive track record of winning trophies, as well as his relaxed demeanor and ability to foster strong relationships with players, as the factors that attracted them to him as their new coach.

“We went after him not only due to his record, but also because he is a decent person,” Rodrigues told beIN Sports recently.

“Those who have worked with him say that he is open, cultured, and he appreciates Brazilian football.”

One moment his love of Brazilian football was put on hold was when he was assistant coach to Arrigo Sacchi as Italy lost to Brazil on penalties in the 1994 World Cup final.

With Brazil, Ancelotti will have some familiar faces from Real Madrid.

Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo and Eder Militao have been key players in his latest spell with Real which has resulted in six trophies.

“He is the best coach in the world,” said Vinicius, who has developed under Ancelotti and formed a close bond with the coach who supported the 22-year-old Brazilian when he was the target of racist abuse last season.

Ancelotti will be the fourth non-Brazilian to coach Brazil. The last was Argentine Filpo Nunez who was in charge for one game in 1965.

Ancelotti has won the Champions League twice with both AC Milan and Real Madrid.

He has won domestic league titles with Real and Milan, in England with Chelsea, in Germany with Bayern Munich and in France with Paris Saint-Germain.

    ‘It is a dream’

Ramon Menezes has been in charge of the Brazil team since Tite stood down on a caretaker basis.

The Brazilian federation had announced earlier on Wednesday that Fluminense’s Fernando Diniz would take charge of the team for the coming year.

“Fernando Diniz will lead the Brazilian team for a year, and I’m sure he will do it with great competence, as always during his professional career,” said Rodrigues in a video statement.

The 49-year-old will be in charge of the first six South American qualifying games for the 2026 World Cup this year, including the clashes with world champions Argentina and Uruguay.

“It is a dream, an honour and a huge pride to serve the national team,” Diniz said.

Brazil will start their qualifying campaign in September at home against Bolivia and then away against Peru.
