Government assigns caretaker team to manage Bogoso and Prestea mines operations

The Minerals Commission has appointed a six-member caretaker team to assist the regional manager in managing operations at the FGR Bogoso and Prestea mines after the government terminated the company’s mining leases.

On September 18, 2024, the government made the termination announcement, citing findings from various reports by the Minerals Commission and a Ministerial Committee that assessed the company’s operations.

This decision followed thorough consultations with stakeholders in the mining industry.

Lands Minister Samuel Abu Jinapor revealed that the previous operators had been warned in August 2023 for numerous breaches of mining regulations.

Despite receiving guidance from the Minerals Commission to correct these violations, the company failed to comply.

In contrast, Blue Gold Bogoso Prestea Limited, claiming to be the new operator, has disputed the government’s decision, stating that its operations are legal and that it intends to contest the termination notice.

According to a notice from the Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission, Martin Ayisi, the newly formed caretaker team will take charge of overseeing the daily affairs of the mine site starting immediately.

    Below is the full notice.

We’ve received no such communication – Blue Gold Bogoso Prestea on mining license termination

Blue Gold Bogoso Prestea Limited has dismissed claims that the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources terminated the mining leases of FGR Bogoso Prestea Limited as of September 3, 2024.

According to a statement from the new operators of the Bogoso and Prestea mines, they have not received any official notice regarding the alleged termination.

The statement also affirmed that the mining leases remain valid and are fully owned by the company.

The company reassured its employees to “maintain their composure and continue their work, as the termination process of a mining lease must adhere to established legal procedures to safeguard the interests of all stakeholders and ensure that due process is observed.”

This clarification follows a statement by the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, on September 18, 2024. He explained that the “decision to terminate the mining leases was made after reviewing various reports from the Minerals Commission, consulting a Ministerial Committee on the company’s operations, and engaging extensively with all relevant stakeholders.”

The acquisition of the mines by Blue Gold came after Future Global Resources (FGR) encountered significant operational difficulties, leading to a decline in performance since 2017 and accumulating over $200 million in losses, primarily owed to local suppliers, government agencies, and its employees.

FGR previously held a 90% stake in the project, with the Government of Ghana owning the remaining 10%.

The Bogoso-Prestea mine boasts a storied history since 1912 and has produced over 9 million ounces of gold.

Filling station at Bogoso catches fire; several properties destroyed

Prestea firefighters of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) on July 30, 2024, showcased their heroism by swiftly responding to a major fire outbreak at Dukes Fuel Filling Station in Kojokrom, Bogoso.

Led by ASTNO Emmanuel Sampson, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) crew arrived promptly and managed to bring the blaze under control at 19:47 hours, fully extinguishing it by 20:20 hours without recording any injuries.

The quick and skilled action of these gallant firefighters prevented the fire from spreading to nearby residential buildings and a warehouse, averting what could have been a significant disaster.

An investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of the fire.

Despite the significant damage to several vehicles, including a Nissan pickup, a Mazda Demio, a recovery truck, and multiple tricycles and fuel pumps, the firefighters’ efforts ensured that surrounding structures were preserved, minimizing the overall impact of the incident.

The unfortunate incident was filed by the PRO, Western Region on Saturday, August 3, and reported by the GNFS on its Facebook platform on August 4.

FGR Bogoso-Prestea Mine employees stage protest against management

Workers at Future Global Resources Bogoso-Prestea Mines (FGR) are protesting against alleged mismanagement that has adversely affected mine productivity and workers’ payment systems.

The General Secretary of the senior staff union at FGR Bogoso-Prestea Mines, Samuel Kumi Manu, along with other workers, voiced their concerns to Citi News during the demonstration.

They claimed that the mine has witnessed no investment since FGR assumed control in 2020.

In response, they called on the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, to request evidence of FGR’s financial capability.

This, they believe, will determine whether the mine should be retained by FGR or transferred to a more credible investor.

“We want the sector minister, Samuel Abu Jinapor, to take action because we know on record that the minister has, on two occasions, issued ultimatums to FGR to show proof of financial capability. However, on both occasions, FGR has failed to comply. This implies that FGR does not have the means to operate the mine. Therefore, we expect the minister to intervene and transfer it to a credible investor who can inject financial capacity into the operation, as what we lack now is finances.”
