A former flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former Minister of Energy, Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko, has called for the urgent rebranding of the party, emphasizing that it has lost its core values and is heading in the wrong direction.
In a statement seen by the media, Agyarko argued that the party’s identity and sense of direction have been compromised, leading to the call for reforms.
“The urgent call for the NPP to be rebranded is a tacit admission that we have deviated from our core values, mores, beliefs, and ideals, and have lost our sense of direction and identity,” Agyarko stated. “The manifestations of this loss are what is driving this call for reforms and rebranding. The desire to rebrand is a tacit recognition that our current brand is tarnished, and we are unhappy with the current state of affairs.”
Agyarko further expressed his concern that the ideological brilliance of the party had been “bleached,” leading fewer people to support it. He stressed that the NPP is a legacy, rooted in the struggles and sacrifices of past generations, and must return to its foundational values.
In his statement, Agyarko emphasized the importance of the NPP returning to its core principles, warning that without them, the party would be engaging in ineffective actions. He quoted John Hannaford, stating that “our values are fundamental truths. They are central to who we are. They point us in the right direction. We must ensure they remain our compass through changing times.”
The former flagbearer hopeful highlighted the necessity of using lessons from the party’s past to shape its future, saying, “We do not intend to merely sigh from the past. That would be reactionary. We should use these teachings and lessons of our past to more intensely celebrate the present and reshape the future.”
Agyarko outlined 11 key values that he believes the NPP has abandoned, resulting in a loss of its true identity. These include respect for and defense of the rule of law, commitment to building a free and democratic system of government where all citizens can contribute to the nation’s welfare, ensuring freedom from dictatorship and oppression, protection of fundamental rights and individual freedoms, with every individual deserving respect and dignity.
He also emphasized security of private property and economic rights, echoing Thomas Paine’s assertion that “no one ought to be deprived of it except in cases of evident public necessity.” Agyarko stressed the importance of decentralizing power from the central government to local levels for more effective policy implementation, promoting an efficient market economy and individual enterprise while ensuring safety nets to protect the poor and vulnerable.
Other values he mentioned included strengthening democratic institutions to sustain good governance, recognizing the role of religious, cultural, and civil society institutions in national development, including religious organizations and the institution of chieftaincy. Agyarko also underscored the need for a fair distribution of national resources to prevent monopolization and promote equal opportunities for all citizens.
He called for ensuring access to equal education, healthcare, and employment for all Ghanaians, and creating an enabling environment for private enterprise to thrive, allowing both citizens and foreign investors to invest without fear of bureaucratic restrictions, fostering wealth creation and prosperity for the people.
Agyarko’s call for a return to these core values aims to restore the NPP’s true identity and credibility, hoping to realign the party with the principles that once made it a powerful force in Ghana’s political landscape.
Former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko shared that his family, while not affluent, had a promising start in life.
His father, originally a cocoa farmer and later a chief buyer for Lions Cocoa Company in Sefwi Bekwai, Ghana, partnered with a Greek-Cypriot businessman, Mr. C. Mouthasos, to introduce the second-hand clothing business to Ghana.
This venture was pioneering at the time.
Despite their early success, political circumstances forced his father into exile for seven years across Nigeria, Togo, and Ivory Coast when Boakye Agyarko was 62 years old.
“No, I didn’t leave the ministry as a bitter person…Bitterness is not part of my life. But with all the things God has passed me through to this stage of my life if I become bitter, then I am ungrateful to God.”
“No, from a rich home? My mother is from Krobo Odumasi. She was a teacher. She had 5 children with my father…My father started life well. He was the chief buyer for lions cocoa company based in Sefwi Bekwai. So he was in the cocoa industry.”
“When the Second World War started, he was supplying food to the colonial army. Then he stopped and opened a store with his Greek business partner. They used to sell Holland cloth and others.
“Then they added second-hand clothing. They were the first to bring second-hand clothing business to Ghana. My father, K Agyarko and Sons,” he disclosed.
Unfortunately for the Agyarko family, their good living had to come to an end when his father went into exile due to politics.
“Because of politics, my father had to go into exile. He lost everything and was in exile for 7 years in Nigeria, Togo and Ivory Coast. He was 62 then.”
He emphasised that Alan’s decision to leave the party after many years should prompt soul-searching within the party rather than being a cause for celebration among some party members.
Agyarko also noted that while Alan’s resignation is public knowledge, there may be others within the party who have mentally resigned and are only waiting for the elections to officially abandon the party.
“At least my brother Kyerematen has put his thoughts and feelings on paper for all to appreciate. How about the many who harbour similar and maybe more petulant sentiments in their hearts but are not openly expressing same?
“There are many in our party today who, out of dismay, resigned in their hearts and are only waiting to walk away from us at the ballot box,” he said in a statement.
Furthermore, the former campaign manager for President Akufo-Addo emphasized the importance of party executives in reconciling differences and comforting disheartened members at all tiers of the party.
Alan Kyerematen’s choice to contest the 2024presidential elections as an independent candidate stemmed from his belief that the NPP had experienced substantial transformations, straying from its traditional identity.
The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially declared Francis Addai Nimoh as the fifth candidate, resolving the tie with former Energy Minister, Boakye Agyarko.
The declaration comes after Boakye Agyarko’s withdrawal from the contest.
Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye, Chairman of the NPP’s Presidential Elections Committee, formally conveyed the cancellation in a letter addressed to Boakye Agyarko.
During the NPP’s Super Delegates Congress, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia secured the highest votes, emerging as the top candidate among the five selected to participate in the party’s primaries scheduled for November 4.
The Super Delegates Congress was conducted to choose five presidential aspirants from a pool of ten candidates who had submitted their candidacies.
After collecting votes from all 17 polling centers across the country, Vice President Dr. Bawumia received 68.15% of the total votes cast, followed by Kennedy Agyapong, Member of Parliament for Assin Central, with 14.30%.
Alan Kyerematen, former Trades Minister, came third with 10.29%, and former Agriculture Minister Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto secured fourth place with 3.90%.
However, a tie emerged between Francis Addai-Nimoh and former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko, both receiving 0.98% of the total votes cast.
Consequently, a run-off was scheduled for September 2 to determine the final candidate.
The decision by the National Council to constitute an electoral college comprised of its members to break the tie faced opposition from Boakye Agyarko.
He formally withdrew from the upcoming run-off election, citing unconstitutionality in the National Council’s decision to narrow down the selection process to a select few individuals, instead of considering all 955 individuals who participated in the first round.
Boakye Agyarko also argued that the establishment of a new electoral college violated the party’s constitution and raised additional legal concerns.
The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has justified its choice to limit voting rights exclusively to National Council members for the runoff election, intended to resolve the deadlock between Boakye Agyarko and Francis Addai-Nimoh.
The party has been criticized for restricting voting privileges to only the members of the National Council, the party’s second-highest decision-making body.
Boakye Agyarko, one of the aspirants, decried this move as unconstitutional.
“If you look at the party’s constitution, there is no provision that says that this is how a run-off would be conducted. So we are saying that the National Council did not depart from the position of the Presidential Elections Committee. The National Council has only given the modalities for the conduct of the run-off, and so the September 2 date, given by the Presidential Elections Committee, has been confirmed by the National Council. The National Council only said that the delegates for the run-off will be members of the council,” he said.
According to Evans Nimako, the Director of Elections and Research, the NPP’s constitution lacks specific provisions on how a run-off should be conducted.
Therefore, the National Council’s decision to have council members as the sole voters for the run-off, scheduled for Saturday, September 2, was in line with the Presidential Elections Committee’s earlier stance. They confirmed the September 2 date and upheld the requirement that only council members could participate in the run-off.
However, the NPP later canceled the run-off, which was initially intended to decide between Francis Addai-Nimoh and Boakye Agyarko, following Mr. Agyarko’s withdrawal from the race.
In a letter addressed to Boakye Agyarko, Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye, Chairman of the NPP’s Presidential Elections Committee, acknowledged Agyarko’s decision and announced the cancellation of the September 2, 2023 run-off.
This run-off was intended to determine which candidate would join the other four aspirants in the party’s presidential primary on November 4, 2023.
Boakye Agyarko had decided not to participate in the run-off, citing a breach of the party’s constitution in a letter dated August 31, 2023, and addressed to Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye, Chairman of the NPP’s Presidential Elections Committee.
This decision followed a Special Delegates’ Conference held by the NPP the previous Saturday, during which the number of flagbearer hopefuls was reduced from ten to five.
Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko, a presidential aspirant from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has officially withdrawn from the upcoming run-off election, which was intended to determine the 5th aspirant.
This decision comes in response to the NPP’s announcement that its National Council would form an electoral college to resolve the tie between Mr. Agyarko and his rival, Francis Addai Nimoh, both of whom secured the 5th position in the recently concluded super delegate conference.
In a press release issued by Mr. Agyarko, he has characterized this move as unconstitutional, arguing that the National Council’s selection of a few individuals to represent the 955 participants from the first round is not in line with the party’s democratic principles.
He further contends that the establishment of this electoral college also violates the party’s constitution, pointing to additional legal violations as well.
“It is totally unacceptable to me that such an unconstitutional act can be perpetuated on the altar of expediency. Am I to surmise that the party did not know the cost implication? It is unconscionable that the rules of the game will be changed midstream.
“Rules and regulations that are flip-flopped in such a manner is only detrimental to fair play and justice. It is a clear violation of the party’s constitution and the guidelines for the Special Electoral College. It is an unconstitutional act which | cannot allow myself to be associated with,” portions of his statement read.
In light of these concerns, the former Energy Minister asserts that he cannot, in good conscience, participate in an electoral process that disrupts an earlier mutually agreed-upon procedure.
“I, therefore, respectfully, serve this notice to refrain from such a contest. As always, I wish the party well.”
On Saturday, August 26, during the New Patriotic Party’s Super Delegates Conference, six presidential aspirants successfully advanced in the competition. Leading the pack was Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who garnered 68.15% (629) of the total votes. He was followed by Kennedy Agyapong, who secured 15.03% (132) of the total votes.
Alan Kyerematen secured the third position with 10.29% (95) of the total votes, while Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto came in fourth place with 3.90% (36) of the votes.
Interestingly, although the Super Delegates Conference was originally intended to select five candidates, it resulted in a tie for the fifth position, with both Francis Addai Nimoh and Boakye Kyeremateng Ayarko receiving nine votes each.
In a shocking turn of events, Boakye Kyerematen Agyarko, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, has withdrawn from the party’s special run-off election slated for September 2, 2023. Agyarko’s decision comes amidst allegations that the party’s Presidential Elections Committee’s handling of the run-off contravenes the party’s constitution and established election guidelines.
The NPP’s run-off election was initiated to break the tie between Boakye Kyerematen Agyarko and Francis Addai Nimoh, both of whom garnered 9 votes each in the previous special delegates election held on August 26, 2023. This election saw the candidate pool narrowed down from ten to five. The upcoming run-off, originally intended to decide the final flagbearer for the 2024 election, has now been thrown into turmoil with Agyarko’s sudden withdrawal.
“It is totally unacceptable to me that such an unconstitutional act can be perpetuated on the altar of expediency. Am I to surmise that the party did not know the cost implication?
“It is unconscionable that the rules of the game will be changed midstream. Rules and regulations that are flip-flopped in such a manner is only detrimental to fair play and justice.
Agyarko, in his withdrawal statement dated August 31, 2023, expressed vehement opposition to the decision made by the Presidential Elections Committee. He decried the limitation imposed on the number of delegates eligible to participate in the run-off vote, considering it a violation of the party’s constitution and the established guidelines for the election. Agyarko pointed out that altering the rules of the election midway undermines fair play and justice, characterizing the decision as “unconstitutional” and “errant.”
“I refuse to be a part of such an act that seeks to unjustly truncate a previously agreed-upon process,” Agyarko stated. He emphasized that he cannot, in good conscience, lend his support to what he sees as an infringement on the party’s democratic procedures.
Agyarko went on to challenge the validity of the altered run-off election, contending that the originally established procedure should be upheld. He argued that the Special Electoral College, charged with shortlisting candidates, must consist of the full complement specified in the party’s constitution. Agyarko maintained that substituting this list with another group is beyond the authority of any individual or committee.
The withdrawal of a prominent contender like Agyarko introduces uncertainty into the NPP’s already complex candidate selection process. As of now, it remains unclear how the party leadership will respond to Agyarko’s withdrawal and the allegations of constitutional breach. With the November 4, 2023 final flagbearer election approaching, the NPP faces the challenge of reconciling internal dissent and ensuring a fair and transparent candidate selection process.
“The position of the run-off scheduled for Saturday, 2nd September, 2023 was reaffirmed by the Chairman of the Elections Committee during your address to the party after the first round of the Special College elections, where you stated that candidates who voted in the first round will be the ones to vote in the second round.
“The constitutional Special Electoral College with the mandate to short-list the list of aspirants is and can be none other than the full compliment listed under Article 13, Clause (9). It is not within the province or power of anybody to truncate this list and substitute it with anything else,” he stated.
The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer candidate, Mr. Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko has refuted media reports that he had withdrawn from the Party’s presidential primary runoff.
After receiving nine votes, Mr. Boakye and Mr. Francis Addai-Nimo tied for fifth place in the NPP’s Special Delegates Congress on Saturday, August 26, 2023.
On Saturday, September 2, a run-off will determine which candidate will compete with the other four for the position of Party flagbearer on November 4.
However, early Monday morning media reports indicated that the former Energy Minister had dropped out of the run-off election and had endorsed Mr. Addai-Nimo.
Mr Boakye, in a press statement issued, urged the public to disregard the reports.
“I have not made any such pronouncements with anyone or any media house, I am ready for the upcoming run-off scheduled for Saturday, September 2, 2023,” he said.
The November 4 Congress will have five candidates.
New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential aspirant, Boakye Agyarko, has refuted reports of his withdrawal from the party’s flagbearer race.
It was earlier reported that the former Energy Minister stepped down to allow Francis Addai-Nimoh pick the final slot to contest in the November 4 primaries.
The two tied at the end of the Super Delegates Conference held on Saturday, August 26, 2023.
But in a statement released on August 28, Mr Agyarko clarified that he has not “made any such pronouncements with anyone or any media house.”
According to the party, a run-off election will be held on Saturday, September 2, 2023, to decide which of them will join the primaries.
Mr Agyarko has assured his readiness to battle it out and sail through victorious.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has shortlisted five out of the 10 presidential aspirants for the November 4 national congress of the party to elect a flag bearer for the 2024 general election.
Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia won the super delegates conference with a total of 629 votes, representing 68.15% of the total valid votes.
Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong came in second with 132 votes, while former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen placed third with 95 votes.
Former Agriculture Minister, Dr Afriyie Akoto, placed fourth.

A Lecturer at Central University, Dr. Benjamin Otchere-Ankrah, has lauded a presidential hopeful for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Boakye Agyarko, for his remarkable potential to lead Ghana.
Dr. Otchere-Ankrah believes that Agyarko possesses the necessary attributes to become the country’s president, yet laments his lack of massive support from the public.
Speaking to the media, Dr. Otchere-Ankrah emphasized the significant role of a strong and extensive supporter base in propelling a candidate to the pinnacle of political leadership.
He pointed out that, in the realm of politics, the possession of a large following often proves more decisive than rigid adherence to principles.
Having a substantial following is key for a candidate’s success; principles matter less in politics. Despite his remarkable wisdom and vision, it’s astonishing that Boakye Agyarko still lacks supporters.
“If we consider leadership, Boakye Agyarko possesses charisma and profound wisdom that’s truly impressive,” he added.
Dr. Otchere-Ankrah commended Agyarko’s exceptional wisdom and visionary thinking, expressing his surprise at the relatively modest number of supporters rallying behind him.
The lecturer noted that Agyarko’s charisma and depth of insight set him apart, making him an exceptional candidate for leadership.
When considering potential leaders for the nation, Dr. Otchere-Ankrah pointedly highlighted Agyarko’s outstanding qualities.
He characterized Mr Agyarko as a charismatic figure who exudes wisdom, leaving a profound impact whenever he speaks.
Dr. Otchere-Ankrah commended Mr Agyarko for his remarkable leadership potential and urged him to continue sharing his vision and wisdom with the public, in hopes that his message will resonate more widely and eventually gain the support it deserves.
Mr Agyarko who served as the former Minister of Energy, has claimed to be the sole candidate capable of ending the party’s eight-year political cycle.
According to him, the only party that has better plans for the country is the NPP.
On July 12, 2023, the party’s vetting committee granted clearance to all 10 presidential aspirants for the upcoming special Electoral College election.
The NPP on August 26, 2023, will hold a special delegates conference to choose five out of the ten candidates for the November 4, 2023 presidential primary.
Former Ambassador of Ghana to India, Sam Pee Yalley, says his heart goes out to the Ghanaian youth who will have no other option than to bear the brunt of the unlawful actions taken by the current leaders in government.
According to Mr Pee Yalley, several criminal offenses have been perpetrated under the Akufo-Addo led government yet none of the culprits have been brought to justice.
Contributing to discussions on Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV, Wednesday, July 26, Mr Pee Yalley expressed his displeasure over the secrecy characterised by persons in the current government.
He highlighted several sensitive issues such as the scandalous Ameri Plant deal involving former Energy Minister, Boakye Agyarko, and the Sky train scandal involving Joe Ghartey – two individuals contesting the New Patriotic Party flagbearership race.
He noted that it is unacceptable for the former government officials involved to keep such matters private and only provide updates when they believe it is most convenient to do so.
“Why do they think they must contest elections before they spill this?” he quizzed.
Ameri deal
Following the change of government in 2017, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, initiated a renegotiation of the Ameri deal signed in 2015. The government sought to amend the terms of the agreement to reduce costs and make it more favorable to Ghana.
The renegotiation process led to the signing of a novation agreement with a new company called Mytilineos International Trading Company in 2018. Under this agreement, Mytilineos took over the management and operation of the Ameri Power Plant from Ameri Group.
Boakye Agyarko’s revealation
Mr Boakye Agyarko, during an interview on Kumasi-based Asanteman FM, claimed that Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, a prominent figure in the NPP, renegotiated the Ameri deal without obtaining consent from the government committee assigned to work on the deal.
Upon confronting Gabby about the matter, Agyarko asserted that he was told to keep quiet because President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was already informed about the actions taken by Gabby.
Agyarko recounted that he received a call from Gabby while he was on a flight to the United States, during which Gabby expressed frustration at not being able to reach him.
Sam Pee’s response
According to Sam Pee Yalley, he finds it unfortunate that it took a presidential ambition to get Mr Agyako to talk about the very matter that got him fired in 2018.
“Any Patriotic Ghanaian who concedes this fact has no favour with me at all. Because the damage that may have been caused from that time till today cannot be quantified,” he explained.
He called for a Parliamentary probe into the Ameri deal to ensure the fine details of what transpired are made public.
“Boakye Agyarko should not be left alone. There should be a committee to look into the Ameri deal so Ghanaians will see what exactly happened,” he entreated.
Sky train project
Former Minister of Railways Development and a presidential aspirant for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Joe Ghartey, affirmed that he did not make any payments to AI Sky or give authorization for the transfer of $2 million to finance the Accra Sky Train Project.
Clarifying the issues in an interview on Citi FM, Joe Ghartey stated that: “It is the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund that paid the money and the Fund is mandated to make such payments and so if the Minority wants anyone to refund the money, they should tell the Auditor General to ask the Fund to refund the money.”
Sam Pee’s response
The former Ambassador indicated that it is opportunistic on the part of Mr Ghartey to reveal the entity that made such payment when his presidential ambition is on the line.
“He says we have paid two million dollars to a company that didn’t even exist. In law, if you are not authorized to do what you are doing, what is your status?
Today, Joe Ghartey tells us that he was not the one who paid the money. Who paid the money? Why did Joe Ghartey keep quiet all this while until someone poked him?” he quizzed.
According to Mr Sam Pee, the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta and President Akufo-Addo must be aware of this information as such a national project cannot proceed without their active involvement.
“Without authorisation from that Minister (Finance) and President nobody can. There imare certain expenditure that concern the development of this country, we were not doing it for railways alone. So the President must know of this. The Minister of Finance who signed the cheques for payment must know about this,” he stated.
Sam Pee ‘wails‘
For Mr Sam Pee, he is pained by the fact that some Ghanaians can “be wicked to this country.”
According to him, natural resources and funds that the youth of this country could rely on have been damaged or mortgaged by the government.
“We have almost destroyed all our state institutions and the persons in the state institutions cannot be trusted.
“Look at our water bodies. Look at our education system. Today, students have to do four terms and parents are paying. Today, the private schools have been collapsed and all these are happening and we in the political class feel we are untouchable?
“We should be sensitive to the plight of Ghanaians who vote for us. A lot of crime has been committed. Too many crimes have been committed in the fourth republic under Nana Akufo-Addo.”
Mr Sam Pee therefore said “I weep for this country and its youth because not only are we consuming their monies, keeping millions of dollars in our houses.”
“What will the youth depend on when they grow up,” he quizzed.
Senior member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, has purportedly responded to claims levelled against him over the ‘controversial’ Ameri Plant deal.
New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful and former Minister for Energy, Boakye Agyarko, during an interview on Kumasi-based Asanteman FM, claimed that Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, a prominent figure in the NPP, renegotiated the Ameri deal without obtaining consent from the government committee assigned to work on the deal.
In a recent post on Facebook, some hours after Mr Agyarko’s comments, Mr Otchere-Darko made a statement accusing an individual of being a liar.
“What aaaa can one say to an energised liar, struggling with constipation?” he wrote.
Due to the ongoing controversy and the lack of official statement on the matter, it is believed that this is Mr Otchere-Darko’s way of responding to Mr Agyarko’s accusations.
According to the former energy minister, when he discussed the matter with President Akufo-Addo, the president inquired whether there was anything inappropriate about Gabby’s actions.
Boakye Agyarko said that he told the president that, “the authority to renegotiate the terms of the Ameri Power Plant doesn’t lie in the hands of Gabby and that the proposal the firm he contracted made had violated all the Cabinet instructions and extended the contract to 20 years.”
Agyarko added that Akufo-Addo agreed with his reasoning but went ahead and asked him to forward the deal Gabby had negotiated to the committee that was set up to renegotiate the deal.
Ameri Plant deal
The Ameri Power Plant project was initiated in response to Ghana’s power generation challenges and the need to increase the country’s electricity supply to meet the growing demand for energy.
The project was awarded to Ameri Group, a Dubai-based energy company. Ameri was tasked with supplying and operating the power plant.
The Ameri deal was signed in 2015 under an emergency power agreement to quickly address the power crisis in Ghana. The agreement was signed during the tenure of former President John Dramani Mahama.
After the initial agreement was signed, the Ameri deal became a subject of controversy in Ghana due to concerns over its cost and terms. There were allegations of overpricing and lack of transparency in the agreement.
Following the change of government in 2017, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, initiated a renegotiation of the Ameri deal.
The novation agreement was brought before the Ghanaian Parliament for approval, and after heated debates, it was eventually ratified by Parliament in March 2018.
Former minister of Energy, Boakye Agyarko has recounted the events that led to his removal from office in 2020.
Speaking to the media, he attributed his sacking to the re-negotiation of the 250 megawatt Ameri Power deal, which resulted in a more cost-effective agreement than the one under the previous government.
According to Agyarko, certain prominent figures in President Akufo-Addo‘s administration were displeased with the revised deal facilitated by NPP stalwart, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, without the consent of the 18-member committee, headed by lawyer Philip Addison, that was established to work on the deal.
When Agyarko discussed the matter with President Akufo-Addo, the president questioned whether there was an issue with Gabby’s actions.
The former energy minister explained that Gabby lacked the authority to renegotiate the Ameri Power Plant terms and the proposal he presented violated Cabinet instructions by extending the contract to 20 years.
President Akufo-Addo acknowledged Agyarko’s concerns and requested that he forward Gabby’s negotiated deal to the committee responsible for renegotiation.
Despite this, the former Minister for Works and Housing, Samuel Atta Akyea, threatened to mobilize Members of Parliament (MP) against Agyarko if he presented the committee’s deal in the house.
When Agyarko presented the committee’s report to Parliament, then-Speaker Aaron Mike Oquaye informed him that the house opposed the proposal in the report and suggested seeking approval through an executive instrument.
He further mentioned that since the president was out of the country, he sought the signature for the executive instrument from Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
However, to his surprise, when the document returned, it bore the signature of the executive secretary to the president, Nana Bediatuo Asante.
When he appeared before one of the select committees of parliament to discuss the deal, he faced strong opposition from committee members, including Dr. Mark Assibey-Yeboah, the former Chairman of the Finance Committee.
Agyarko expressed his frustration, stating that the committee did not give him a fair chance to explain himself, as they had already been influenced by false information spread by a “gang” of people who claimed that the new Ameri deal was worse than the one under the Mahama government.
He highlighted that at that time, no contract had been signed, and no payments had been made, yet calls for his dismissal were already rampant on social media, including from Manasseh Azure and Gabby.
In the end, Boakye Agyarko concluded by emphasizing the difficult position he found himself in, with people demanding his removal even before any concrete actions had been taken regarding the Ameri deal.
“This was what transpired. Manasseh Azure and Gabby had already written on social media that I should be sacked even before this happened.
“The committee which I was not part of went to work to negotiate a deal, there was no contract signed, nothing had been paid but people were calling for my head, what was I supposed to do,” he concluded in the Twi dialect.
New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful and former Minister for Energy, Boakye Agyarko, during an interview on Kumasi-based Asanteman FM, reportedly shared some alleged incidents that occurred during the re-negotiation of the 250 Megawatts Ameri Power Plant.
According to a news report by energynewsafrica.com, Agyarko claimed that Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, a prominent figure in the NPP, renegotiated the Ameri deal without obtaining consent from the government committee assigned to work on the deal.
“I told him I was onboard a flight travelling. Then he (Gabby) told me that he was sending me a document via email so I should check.
“When I arrived safely and went to my hotel room, I opened my email address and saw the document. To my surprise, Gabby had, on the blind side of the Committee set up and approved by the President to renegotiate with Ameri Energy Group, contracted a law firm to engage Ameri Energy Group and completed their negotiation and recommended a certain company to operate the Ameri Power Plant and extended the contract to 20 years.
“I sent Gabby a mail and asked him what authority he had to do that. And I told him Cabinet has given specific instructions to follow and his response was what makes me think that my Boss (President Akufo-Addo) doesn’t know about what he has done…so I kept quiet,” he is quoted to have said by energynewsafrica.com.
The novation agreement was brought before the Ghanaian Parliament for approval, and after heated debates, it was eventually ratified by Parliament in March 2018.
New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential hopeful, Boakye Agyarko, has recounted a horrifying shooting incident which almost claimed his life in 1983.
According to him, he was shot six times but all the bullets came out through his back after he was seized by some soldiers amidst the confusion of an attempted coup.
The gunshot he said left a deep wound injury in his back, a scar from the incident which he still has.
The former Energy Minister opened up on his harrowing experience on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen as he shared his political struggles and experiences ahead of the NPP presidential primary.
“I have been in the NPP tradition for 42 years. I was shot and nearly died because of politics and the NPP tradition.
“Aside from being a coordinator of the National Students Union, I was deeply involved in politics and criticised the military rule, which made me a target,” he said.
Mr Agyarko said on that fateful day, he was shot alongside 48 others but divinely was the only survivor who was even released after their bodies were deposited at the 37 Military Hospital.
“A nurse on duty at the time who gave me her name as Lily Tamakloe was the one who detected I was still alive. So she informed the doctors and I was immediately rushed for surgery. I was not put on any anaesthesia because the doctor told me that could have killed me,” he recounted.
Mr Agyarko stated he stayed in the hospital for almost three months and had to flee the country upon the advice of a high-ranked soldier surgeon, Dr Akpaloo.
“I had to undergo some surgeries in the US to ensure my full recovery and for two years, I was leaving but dead and from those experiences, I just learned to keep mute about certain things,” he noted.
A former Energy Minister and a contender for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer-ship race, Boakye Agyarko, has pledged to help the party achieve a long-term dominance of Ghanaian politics for the next 40 years.
He made this remark today, 19 June 2023, as he filed his nomination at the party office in the presence of enthusiastic NPP supporters.
He said the party’s goal was not only to break the eight-year cycle of alternating power with the opposition, but to transform the country with a sustained governance.
“We have to motivate you; we have to prepare you. We have to make you eager to fight for this party in 2024. If we do that, then we are assured of 2024. I am interested in the party retaining power for the next 40 years, not just breaking the eight. Being in power for the next 40 years is the only way we are going to change this country. In the next 40 years, it is the only way we can change the country,” he stated.
The flagbearer hopeful, therefore, urged the members and supporters to work hard to ensure that the party’s victory in the upcoming election and beyond is secured.
“It is going to depend on you, forty years I wouldn’t be here, but the party will, and we must build a strong party where you are comfortable and most importantly where you will receive the reward of your hard work,” he added.
Flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party, Boakye Agyarko, has urged the party to take action against candidates in the flagbearership race who are disregarding the election rules.
Mr Agyarko emphasized the importance of upholding the rules and regulations for a fair and transparent electoral process.
Speaking on the matter, Mr Agyarko stated, “It is important that all [candidates] uphold the rules and regulations, without sounding like a fly in the jar, there have been many provocations, there has been many breaking the rules for which no sanctions have been applied. I have even raised the matter at the national council.
“So long as the rules are clear, so long as there is total fairness, so long as we are all tempered or measured, I believe that we would have a very peaceful contest. But please do not hold yourself aloof from the entire process.”
Responding to Agyarko’s plea, Evans Nimako, the Director of Elections of the NPP, urged him to report any instances of election rule violations by the aspirants to the appropriate committees.
Nimako assured Agyarko that the party would address the concerns once they are brought to their attention.

On Friday, May 26, 2023, four presidential aspirants of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) picked up forms after the party commenced accepting applications for its next flagbearership election.
At the close of day, four candidates successfully picked up their nomination forms.
Boakye Agyarko
Former energy minister, Boakye Agyarko, was the first to pick up nomination forms for the party’s primaries.
A team led by Benjamin Ashitey Armah picked up the forms on behalf of the presidential hopeful at the party’s headquarters in Accra on Friday, May 26, 2023.
Before picking up the nomination forms, Boakye Agyarko had previously met with all regional party executives during his tour.
According to Amarh, spokesperson for Mr. Agyarko’s campaign team, the former minister was the best candidate for the party to retain power in 2024. He described Mr. Agyarko as the “engine” of public policy in the NPP, noting that he would restore hope for the ordinary Ghanaian when given the nod.
Kofi Konadu Apraku
Serial flagbearer aspirant, Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku, also had his nomination forms picked up on his behalf by his team.
Apraku is a Ghanaian politician, economist, corporate executive, diplomat, and a member of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Parliament of the 4th Republic of Ghana.
Dr. Apraku was the Member of Parliament for the Offinso North constituency in the fourth parliament of the fourth Republic of Ghana.
Under the John Agyekum Kufuor government, Dr. Apraku served in various government positions. He served as the Minister of Trade and Industry and was the Minister of Regional Cooperation and NEPAD between 2003-2005. He was the Chairman of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers, a group that includes the Ministers in charge of Integration, Finance, and Trade. He was a governor of the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID) from 2003 to 2006.
After picking up his nomination on Friday, Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku’s team said the NPP and Ghana needed a leader with political experience and economic prowess to turn the fortunes of the country around.
Mr. Kwame Obiri Nkansah, Director of Communication, Friends of Apraku, who picked up the forms, said, “We must go back to the basics if we want to address this economic crisis. Going back to the basics means growing what we eat and producing what we wear, and this is the focus of Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku.”
Francis Addai-Nimoh
Another former contender for the NPP flagbearer slot, Francis Addai-Nimoh, also had nomination forms picked up for him on Friday.
Addai-Nimoh is a leading member of the NPP has represented the party in parliament in the past.
Addai-Nimoh has served as a Member of Parliament for Mampong between 2008 and 2016. He contested in the NPP’s presidential primaries in 2014, where he lost.
Kwabena Agyei Agyepong
Former General Secretary of the NPP, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has picked up a nomination to contest in the flagbearer contest.
After winning the general secretary position in 2015, Kwabena Agyepong and other national executives of the party were removed from office and suspended on grounds of being against the party’s then flagbearer, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
His suspension has since been reversed after the party won the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections.
More to come
Meanwhile, other notable figures like Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Assin Central MP Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former trade minister Alan Kyerematen, and former agric minister Dr. Owusu Afriyie-Akoto are expected to pick up their nominations in the coming days.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has once again mounted its merry-go-round. To have or not to have a so-called early congress has become a quadrennial source of needless tension inside our party.
Our first taste of this bitter and needless squabble was inflicted upon ourselves in 1995.
The party’s constitution clearly stipulates that the flagbearer is to be selected 24 clear months, when in opposition, before the date of the presidential election.
This means that the congress for the selection of the presidential candidate had to be held at the latest before the end of December 1994.
However, there arose within the party strong dissenting voices to delay the choice of the party’s flagbearer for the 1996 presidential election.
As was to be expected, a much larger section of the party was totally against such a move.
They felt it was unbecoming of us to toy with the provision of our constitution for the sake of personal, and often times, unbridled ambitions.
This is how Mr B.J. da Rocha, then National Chairman, addressed the emerging threat in his keynote address to the 4th Annual National Delegates’ Conference at the Great Hall, University of Ghana, Legon on Saturday, August 26, 1995.
Election of party’s presidential candidate
The selection of the party’s candidate for the 1996 presidential election has been the subject of much speculation and, regrettably, has given rise to a great deal of bad feeling within the party.
The party has to elect its candidates for the election. Every member of the party of good standing has the right to offer himself or herself. Must contest for the candidacy generate animosity and controversy?
Can we not have a contest without damaging one another and the party? In due course, a candidate will be elected. Whoever is elected cannot make himself President of Ghana by his individual effort alone.
All of us in the party will have to work hard to win for him the votes which will secure him victory for the party.
It is for the reason that we must do everything to prevent the contest for nomination from degenerating into a bitter and destructive fight among the aspirants.
Already there has developed a heated controversy over the date of electing our candidate. This matter was thoroughly debated by the National Council, after taking all necessary factors into consideration, decided to recommend to this conference that the election of our presidential candidate should take place in March, 1996.
It is a recommendation which I urge this conference to endorse. If we think in terms of the party’s best interest and not the personal convenience of aspirants, then I do not see any reason why there should be any further squabbles over the date of election of our candidates.
By March 1996 we would have had behind us the demanding task of getting our people to register.
We should have laid down the framework for our election campaign and mobilised the necessary man-power and material resources to take off. Remember that our election campaign must take off from the day our candidate is elected.
There is the further consideration that we shall have had time to have done everything possible by way of securing the cooperation of the other opposition parties, if possible.
Already, a committee has been mandated by the National Council to pursue this matter vigorously. I have no doubt that between March and November 1996, we have ample time to conduct an election campaign which should reach its peak at just the right time.
I should like to admonish all aspirants to remember that they are colleagues inside the same party, having identical political interests. None of them can hope to reap any benefit by damaging his opponent either openly or secretly.
Such conduct only harms the party by sowing the seeds of factionalism. You should seek support by impressing on your supporters your own virtues and merits and what you have to offer, not by running down your competitors.
I expect that after this conference, a code of conduct will be drawn up for all aspiring candidates. I expect and fervently hope that we shall soon see the emergence of a new style of campaigning by our presidential aspirants.
National Council meeting
The National Council, the second-highest decision-making body, at a meeting on Friday, December 23, 2022, without a hitherto agenda, goes ahead to undertake the age-old gymnastics of when to hold the various primaries to select candidates.
Right after the meeting, and even before an official communiqué could be issued, a private media outlet, an al-Ahram of some sort, publishes a programme with specific dates and timelines for the upcoming primary not speculatively, but in a matter-of-fact fashion. This publication has since been exposed as a total fabrication.
The party has since issued a statement to the effect that no such decisions were taken as reported. Why such a brazen audacity to deceive? One may only surmise that it amounts to nothing more than a nefarious attempt either to impose a narrow will on a silent majority or in a usual style, “mafia” some people to their detriment and gain an undeserved advantage of others.
So here we are in 2022, and like the Bourbons, we learnt nothing so we forgot nothing, and are, therefore, back to this unwholesome, circular argument, largely driven by inordinate and unbridled narrow ambitions.
The main argument seems now to have been reduced to the imagination that we will need sufficient time to heal wounds, smoothen ruffled feathers and assuage wounded sentiments. The sensible question for me is, why inflict wounds and ruffle feathers in the hope of healing and assuaging?
And what do we regard as sufficient time? There are still petty peeves hanging and dividing us since 2008 with top-ups from 2012. What makes us think that wounds which have been deliberately and consciously infected can heal or heal this fast so as to become the basis of a rapprochement?
To add insult to injury, we have now adopted the “criminal” language of La Mafia into our internal lexicon in describing the shameful and underhand methods by which we gleefully ride roughshod over ourselves for petty gain, but to the detriment of the collective interest and brand.
Setting specific dates for elections
We are the party that forced the argument of holding national elections on specific dates, and rightly so. It was done to eliminate the manipulative and surprise elements out of calling national elections at the behest of the Electoral Commissioner, which did not and should not have such a mandate. And we, who gained this noble achievement, cannot gain same for our own party?
I hear in my mind’s ears, the argument of granting ourselves some flexibility in the language of our party’s constitution. Unfortunately, the truth of the matter and our disposition has already been to misuse the discretion to the detriment of those we perceive to be our internal opponents.
It is better to be put into constitutional structures and only relax them by special resolutions as and when the matter becomes self-evident, and not vice versa.
For those, who have made it their game to “mafia” opponents, both at the parliamentary and presidential primaries, they ought to think hard and pin their eyes on the lessons of history and our own track record- a record that firmly resists ossified dictatorship and impositionists.
Our elders say, “sɛ wo tietia obi deɛ so hwehwɛ wo deɛ a, wo renhunu”, to wit, if you trample on what belongs to others in search of what may legitimately be yours, you will never find it.
It is also said that, “those who destroy others to succeed will surely meet destruction at the gate of their own success.
A former Energy Minister, Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko, has asked President Akufo-Addo to constantly evaluate the performance of his appointees and prune those who are underperforming from his administration.
He believes this is one of the surest ways of keeping the Ministers on their toes.
He made the call on Peace FM’s morning show, Kokrokoo where he also asserted that President Akufo-Addo owes Ghanaians the duty of regularly assessing his appointees and removing those who have so far not lived up to expectation from office.
“There are Ministers who may not be necessarily underperforming but they are fit for the offices they hold. With that you [the President] can say I’m posting that person to another office where he probably may perform better,” Mr Agyarko noted.
He, thus, asked the President to sit back and evaluate all the concerns raised and at least consider reshuffling the Ministers who have so far been labelled as incompetent.
A former Energy Minister, Boakye Kyeremanteng Agyarko, has projected that it will take between five (5) to seven (7) years for the economy to stabilise, given the current economic crisis.
Speaking on Peace FM’s morning show, Kokrokoo as part of conversations on the current economic situation, he noted that “2 years is not enough to stabilise the economy.”
He further asserted that the U.S $3 billion IMF bailout government is seeking is not enough to restore the economy. According to him, “the economy needs an injection of about U. S$ 6 to 7 billion in order to be stable.”
Proposing the way forward, however, he mentioned that government must hold regular meetings with members of the various trade unions in the country to deliberate on the way forward with regards to how to alleviate the economic hardship.
Boakye Agyarko, a former minister of energy, has declared that he will turn down any offer from President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to succeed Ken Ofori-Atta in the position of finance minister.
Boakye Agyarko indicated that he would decline the offer in an interview with Peace FM that GhanaWeb was listening to since the president had previously said that Akufo-Addo and he couldn’t work together.
He also hinted that he saw no reason to return to a failing government.
“The president told me before he sacked me that he could not collaborate with me once more.
He informed me of this by sending the Chief of Staff.
“He (the President) said he cannot work with me and I accepted it. Now, I’m sitting in my own corner thinking about myself.
“I was in a frying pan but I did not fall into the fire because of God’s protection. I didn’t fall into the fire; I fell on the side of the fire. What reasons can you give to convince me to go back into the frying pan?” he said in Twi.
Former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko has criticized President Akufo-Addo for suggesting that there’s no one else in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to take over from Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta.
Over 80 Members of Parliament of the NPP threatened to boycott government business if the President doesn’t sack Ken Ofori Atta and Charles Adu Boahen, Minister of State at the Finance Ministry.
Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, the MPs stressed “if our request is not responded to positively, we will not be present for the budget hearing, neither will we participate in the debate”.
According to Subin MP, Eugene Boakye Antwi, the Finance Minister is “experimenting with this country and we’ve had enough”.
President Akufo-Addo following the MPs’ protest, held an emergency meeting with them and pleaded that Ofori Atta be allowed to conclude talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and also present the 2023 Budget Statement of government in November.
In a statement signed by Majority Leader and Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the NPP MPs have agreed that Ofori Atta will stay “until the conclusion of the round of negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the presentation of the Budget Statement and Economic Policy in November, 2022 and the subsequent passage of the Appropriation Bill after which time the demand will be acted upon.”
However, Boakye Agyarko disagrees with the President.
Speaking on Peace FM’s The Platform programme, he said “it doesn’t make sense” to ask the Finance Minister to stay for now.
“I don’t see how one person…so what are we going to do if God forbid we wake up tomorrow morning and he’s no more? Are we going to ask God to wait and allow him to finish the negotiations? It doesn’t make sense…it speaks ill of us”
Former Energy Minister and a potential 2024 flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Boakye Agyarko has called on all contestants of the ongoing constituency elections to save the image of the party.
The former Minister wants all contestants to eschew any form of practice that will derail the progress of the party.
The NPP is currently selecting its constituency executives by way of voting across the country. This election is a very important exercise to the party as the constituency executives play major roles for the party.
Mr. Boakye Agyarko however wants a peaceful exercise and has asked all the executives to ensure a peaceful event.
He advised, “As I have always insisted upon, it is the responsibility of each and every one of us to avoid any actions and use of any language that will tarnish the good name and image of our party”.
Boakye Agyarko says he doesn’t want unfortunate incidents that occurred during the polling station elections to reoccur during the constituency elections.
He has on that note extended the best of luck to all contestants as the elections commence.
Former Energy Minister, Boakye Agyarko, has described Members of Parliament(MPs) as pubescent [teenage] boys and girls who misconducted themselves and therefore must be corrected.
According to the former Director of Campaign of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, he was saddened and dismayed by the misconduct of the MPs prior to their swearing-in on Thursday dawn to commence work of the Eight Parliament under the Fourth Republic.
“I was saddened and dismayed by the misconduct of members of parliament. This is an August House which some sacrosanct because it is reposed within them to misconduct themselves, but is the dignity of Ghanaians as a whole that matters,†he said in an interview monitored by MyNewsGh.com.
“So, I did not expect them to degenerate into pubescent boys and girls. They [MPs] could do better and they must forswear from today to do better because they hold our dignityâ€. He lambasted
“My appeal to them is that we all make mistakes, there has been a degenerative attitude which must be corrected. And it is up to them [MPs] to correct it and uphold their dignity,†he further noted.
Confusion broke out in parliament on Thursday dawn leading to the snatching of ballots while the lawmakers were in the process of electing a speaker.
In the raging confusion which resulted in fisticuffs between members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), armed military were deployed into the main chamber in order to allow for sanity to prevail.
The action of the lawmakers has been condemned by a section of Ghanaians who accuse them of bringing of the important arms of government into disrepute considering the turn of events.
Former Energy Minister, Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko, has urged electorates in the Ablekuma West constituency to unite and vote massively for the NPP and Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekufu in the 2020 polls.
Speaking at a community outreach organized by the Ablekuma West Municipal Assembly, Mr. Agyarko touted the achievements by the Akufo-Addo led government, thereby urging the constituents to vote massively for continuous development.
Together with the Member of Parliament for the area, Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful, Mr. Agyarko toured some registration centers to assess the progress thus far.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful in a street outreach distributed nose masks and hand sanitizers to drivers, artisans amongst others, urging them to register before the process ends.
Former Energy Minister and leading member of the incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP), Boakye Kyeremanteng Agyarko has endorsed female group, Staunch Queens.
The group, which launched the eastern regional chapter at Koforidua on Friday was chaired by Mr. Boakye Agyarko.
In a statement, the NPP stalwart admonished the group to support and collaborate with the parties existing groups in order to retain power in 2020.
The event was attended by regional executives and government appointees as well as other leading members in the region.
Read the statement below
