  • Are you not afraid of HIV? – Berla Mundi asks Ghanaians engaged in unprotected sex with multiple partners

Are you not afraid of HIV? – Berla Mundi asks Ghanaians engaged in unprotected sex with multiple partners

Renowned Ghanaian media personality Berla Mundi has sparked an important conversation about the rising cases of HIV in the country, emphasizing the need for personal responsibility in sexual health.

In a thought-provoking post on the social media platform X, Berla questioned why many young people in Ghana continue to engage in unprotected sex despite the known risks of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including HIV/AIDS.

“Are you not afraid of contracting HIV/AIDS and other STDs?” Berla quizzed, addressing the alarming trend of multiple sexual partners without the use of condoms.

Her post received various responses, but one in particular stood out. A user suggested, perhaps humorously, that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia should innovate a solution through the Ghana Card system to alert partners of infidelity. The comment appeared to mock the Vice President’s push for digitalization within the government.

“Yo, to curb this menace, I think Bawumia should come up with an innovation that would only allow one to have one partner at a time. Your Ghana Card would be linked to your partner’s, and as soon as you try to have sex with another, a notification would be sent to your partner,” the user wrote.

Berla Mundi’s response was direct and emphasized personal accountability. She reminded the user that it is not the responsibility of the Vice President to prevent individuals from engaging in unprotected sex. Instead, she stressed that it is up to each person to use common sense and prioritize their own health.

“Unrealistic. It’s not the VP’s job to stop you from having unprotected sex. You must have common sense and the desire to protect your own life,” Berla replied.

Her remarks highlight the crucial role of individual responsibility in the fight against HIV/AIDS and other STDs.

Berla Mundi’s call for self-protection and sensible behavior serves as a timely reminder for Ghanaians to be more mindful of their sexual health practices, particularly in light of the rising HIV cases in the country.

Ghana is experiencing an average of 50 new HIV infections daily, with the majority of cases occurring among individuals aged 15 to 49, according to the Ghana AIDS Commission.

This economically active population group represents a significant portion of new infections. The commission released these figures during the unveiling of the 2023 national and sub-national HIV and AIDS estimates and projections.

The data also revealed that out of the 334,095 people living with HIV/AIDS in the country, 17,550 were children below the age of 15. Additionally, there were 17,774 new HIV infections, with 1,698 being children below 15 years and 16,076 representing adults above 15 years.

While there has been a decline in new infections, AIDS deaths, and HIV prevalence, the progress is not sufficient to meet the set goals and targets.

During a media engagement to disseminate the results and discuss their implications, the Director-General of the Ghana AIDS Commission, Dr. Kyeremeh Atuahene, emphasized the need for more efforts to achieve the expected targets.

The forum, attended by media professionals and stakeholders in the HIV response sector, highlighted regional and district-level variations in prevalence and new infections, with Greater Accra, Ashanti, and Eastern regions recording the highest numbers of persons living with HIV.

Challenges identified by the commission include data capture, validation, and quality issues, which need to be addressed urgently. Dr. Atuahene acknowledged the concern over continued mother-to-child transmission, attributing it to gaps in the healthcare system and calling for collective efforts to address the issue.

Stakeholders were urged to work together to achieve the 95-95 targets by the end of 2025 and 98-98 by the end of 2030.

The commission acknowledged the support of stakeholders, including the National AIDS and STI Control Programme, Ghana Health Service, UNAIDS, World Health Organisation, and the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), in generating the data.

UNAIDS Country Director Hector Sucilla Perez emphasized the importance of understanding the epidemic and using data for action to end AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.

Ms. Perez highlighted the critical role of the media in advocating for the needs of persons living with HIV and improving societal enablers to create an enabling environment.

The Country Director of the US Centre for Disease Control (CDC), Tony Ao, commended Ghana’s efforts in the fight against HIV/AIDS and its progress towards achieving high-quality data to guide the national response.

He encouraged stakeholders to use the data judiciously, with technical guidance from experts, to ensure meaningful interpretation and application.

The CDC reiterated its commitment to supporting Ghana’s national AIDS response and praised the country’s progress towards ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.

It isn’t Bawumia’s job to stop you from having unprotected sex, it’s common sense – Berla Mundi schools X user

Renowned Ghanaian media personality, Berla Mundi, has schooled a Ghanaian over whose primary responsibility it is to ensure one is protected from sexually transmitted diseases when sexually active.

In a post discussing the rise in HIV cases in the country, Berla in a post on X asked whether it is it a good time to discuss reasons why many young people have multiple sexual partners and yet refuse to use condoms.

“Are you not afraid of contracting HIV/AIDS and other STDs?” she quizzed.

A user in response to her question noted that Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia should come up with an innovation through the Ghana Card that would alert one’s partner if he or she engages in unfaithful acts. It is believed that the user made the comment in jest to ridicule the Vice President who presently touts government’s digitalization drive.

“Yo (To sic) curb this menace, I think Bawumia should come up with an innovation that would only allow one to have one partner at a time. Your Ghana card would be linked to your partner’s, and soon as you try to have sex with another, a notification would be sent to your partner,” the user wrote.

Reacting to this, Berla reminded the user that the onus lies on oneself to protect his or her life, and hence must act based on common sense.

“Unrealistic. It’s not the VP’s job to stop you from having unprotected sex. You must have common sense and the desire to protect your own life,” she wrote.

New data from the Ghana AIDS Commission reveals a concerning surge in new HIV cases recorded.

In 2023, 17,774 individuals contracted the virus.

This marks a 7% increase compared to the previous year. Ghana recorded a decline in new HIV infections in 2022, with 16,574 cases reported compared to 18,036 in 2021.

Females accounted for a significant majority of new infections in 2023, with 11,317 women newly infected, representing 63.67% of the total, while 6,457 males were infected, representing 36.32%.

Among the newly infected individuals, 4,869 were youths aged 15 to 24, 1,698 were children under 15, 1,520 were adolescents aged 10 to 19, and 16,076 were adults over 15. This data highlights the need for targeted prevention strategies, especially among young people and adolescents.

As of 2023, an estimated 334,095 people in Ghana were living with HIV, with females outnumbering males. This includes 17,550 children under 14, 16,381 adolescents aged 10 to 19, 33,245 young adults aged 15 to 24, and 316,545 adults aged 15 and above.

Despite progress in treatment availability, 12,480 Ghanaians died from AIDS-related illnesses in 2023, highlighting the need for increased access to appropriate treatments and care.

The Ghana AIDS Commission remains committed to achieving the global 95-95-95 targets by 2025, aiming to have 95% of people living with HIV aware of their status, 95% of those diagnosed on antiretroviral therapy (ART), and 95% of those on ART achieving viral suppression. In 2023, Ghana achieved 65.3%, 69.4%, and 89.0% for the respective targets.

Dr. Kyeremeh Atuahene, Director General of the Ghana AIDS Commission, has called for increased efforts to combat AIDS, particularly among the economically active population aged 15 to 49. He emphasized that addressing the AIDS epidemic should be a national priority in Ghana.

    Causes of HIV and Prevention:
HIV is transmitted through contact with certain body fluids, such as blood, semen, vaginal fluids, and breast milk, from a person who has HIV. The most common ways HIV is transmitted include:

    1. Unprotected sexual contact with an infected person.
    2. Sharing needles or syringes with someone who has HIV.
    3. Receiving contaminated blood products or organ transplants.
    4. From mother to child during childbirth or breastfeeding.

    Prevention efforts include:

    1. Practising safe sex by using condoms consistently and correctly.
    2. Getting tested and knowing your partner’s HIV status.
    3. Avoid sharing needles or syringes.
    4. Take pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) if you are at high risk of HIV.
    5. Ensuring access to antiretroviral therapy (ART) for those living with HIV to achieve viral suppression and reduce the risk of transmission.

Education, awareness, and access to healthcare services are crucial in the fight against HIV/AIDS. It is essential for individuals to know their status, seek appropriate care and treatment, and adopt preventive measures to reduce the spread of HIV.

Television personality, Berlinda Addardey known popularly as Berla Mundi has disclosed her unique taste sensation by combining the Ghanaian staple “Gob3” beans with crunchy plantain chips.

During her appearance on the Day Show discussing the 3FM “Gob3” festival, Berla shared nostalgic memories of her school days, where she and her peers would turn their regular Wednesday or Thursday beans routine into a delightful experience by adding plantain chips purchased from a nearby shop.

Berla emphasised the sheer satisfaction of this unconventional pairing, revealing that she enjoyed it without the traditional addition of gari.

“I remember when I was in school, they would give us beans every Wednesday or Thursday, so I used to go and buy plantain chips,

So in Motown, just opposite the dining hall, there was this shop that we bought from, so we just bought and added it to it. “

The discussion took an interesting turn when AJ Sarpong, another participant on the show, revealed her initial association of “Gob3” with the dish red-red.

AJ’s childhood perception was of beans stew and soft plantain, and she expressed surprise upon discovering the practice of consuming raw beans with oil, taking about two years to adjust to the plain beans concept.

“It was always stew, so it was very interesting to grow up and realize that people eat raw beans with oil,” AJ Sarpong remarked

“Gob3,” a Ghanaian dish of beans and gari known for its simplicity and budget-friendly nature, has evolved with exciting additions like fried plantains and eggs.

Meanwhile, plantain chips, the crunchy snacks made from thinly sliced, unripe plantains, traditionally deep-fried, offer a healthier option when baked.
Berla Mundi’s revelation of combining beans with plantain chips introduces a whole new delicacy, adding a flavorful twist to the traditional “Gob3” experience.

“If I am not doing politics; I lay by my wife”-Sam George discloses

Ningo-Prampram Member of Parliament (MP) Sam Nartey George has disclosed that he spends time with his wife during his days off politics.

Reflecting on the journey of his successful marriage, Sam George described the experience as a “good exercise.”

The Ningo-Prampram MP made this submission during an interview with host of Daily Show Berla Mundi on TV3, “If I am not doing politics, I lie by my wife,” Sam Nartey George stated.

According to the law maker, there is no such thing as a perfect marriage.

He argued that an inaccurate narrative about married couples’ lives has been propagated.

Selecting a compatible mate is, in the Ningo-Prampram MP’s opinion, the best method to prevent miscommunications that can result in divorce.

“ Marriage is work but it is a good exercise, especially when you find the right person. Marriage is not a noun but a verb.”

Speaking on the subject of high divorce cases in the country, the Ningo-Prampram stated that traditional media has played a major role in misinforming the youth about the concept of marriages.

Sam George argues that narratives through movies have created an impatient youth who assume marriages are without ups and downs.

“ People have watched too many Novela, movies have taught us a certain culture of impatience. No two people can live together without issues.

“ So we have been accustomed to it through the power of movies so that really is the challenge of marriage as well in young couples.”

Recently, Sam George and his charming spouse Vera commemorated their ten years together.

The MP for Ningo-Prampram has in numerous ways mentored the youth to be a better version of themselves.

“I am one of the greatest survivors in this industry. Anytime I am talking about that I get emotional. I kept being denied roles, sidelined and blacklisted for some strange reasons. She concluded by saying that it was through the local dialect acting that in 2020, she walked home with the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choices Award (AMVCA) as the Best Supporting Actress in the movie ‘The Perfect Picture- Ten Years Later”.

She said: “Then Efiewura happened that spoilt the whole thing. Then I was tagged as a local actress like you can’t meet the particular target or a particular market target and all that just because I am acting my local dialect. But guess what, it is my local dialect that won me that award”.

The Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta and his Deputy John Kumah must also leave office immediately, a member of the Peoples National Convention (PNC) Bernard Mornah has said.

“Investors don’t have confidence in the economy because of Ofori-Atta,” he said on the Big Issue on TV3 with Berla Mundi on Tuesday November 15.

He added ” John Kumah said they will not go to the IMF but today we are at the IMF.”

He was contributing to a discussion on the sacking of the Minister of State at the Finance Ministry Charles Adu Boahen.

  • Adwoa Safo is back to help save Ofori-Atta from censure vote – Suhuyini claims

Tamale Central Member of Parliament, Alhassan Suhuyini, has advanced a reason why embattled Dome-Kwabenya lawmaker, Sarah Adwoa Safo, is returning to Parliament after a long absence.

Suhuyini in an interview on TV3, November 8, 2022, said it was curious that the lawmaker’s much-awaited return was coinciding with a vote of censure motion the Minority Caucus was due to move against Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta.

According to him, the latest development is akin to the last time that she was in Parliament, that is to help with the passage of the 2022 Budget statement of the government.

“You know there is an important vote coming up?” Suhuyini asked New Day host Berla Mundi before adding: “The finance minister’s vote of censure, she has showed up. When did she last show up last minute? On the budget.

“They knew where she was, they could bring her, they just didn’t want to,” he submitted.

“When it is important to this government…remember Adwoa Safo told us the president is aware of her absence and the president understands her and the president has never denied it.

“For me, it is curious that an important vote is coming up….and the president has found a way and remember the president wants to save the Finance Minister at all costs, Adwoa is back,” he stressed.

Adwoa Safo makes no-show in Parliament

On Tuesday, November 8, when proceedings in Parliament started at about 11.38 am, her seat was empty indicating that she was not in the Chamber.

Journalists and even her colleague MPs were expecting to see her join the debate which was going on at the plenary but that did not happen.

Sarah Adwoa Safo’s seat remained empty till the end of the day’s proceedings at 2.00 pm.

It is, however, unclear why the MP, after her return to the country failed to show up in the House.

The MP was relieved of her ministerial post despite having been given extended leave from last year and her seat in Parliament is the subject of a heated debate between the Speaker and Leader of the Majority Group.

After referring her absence from Parliament to the Privileges Committee of Parliament, the Speaker of Parliament said he investigated their work and was not satisfied with it and has since referred it to the floor of Parliament for a decision to be taken.

The Global Citizen Festival is the world’s longest-running global campaign calling for an end to extreme poverty. Through the Festival, the organization brings together millions of people to amplify the message to #EndPovertyNow, and this year, in celebrating 10 Years of impacting change, the event will be split into two locations: Accra and New York.

The 2022 Global Citizen Festival campaign is supported by governments and world leaders across the world.

Since its inception in 2012, the Global Citizen Festival has become the world’s longest-running global campaign, calling for an end to extreme poverty, gender inequality, and environmental degradation.

According to the founder of Global Citizen, Hugh Evans, SDRs (a type of reserve asset mostly sitting unused by the world’s wealthiest countries) can immediately provide new and affordable financing relief for countries at high risk of financial and debt distress.

Global Citizen is calling for world leaders, major corporations, and philanthropic foundations to take to the Global Citizen Festival stages and announce new commitments to End Extreme Poverty NOW, by deploying funds to meet the total goal of reallocating $100 billion in IMF Special Drawing Rights (SDRs), by making up the $40B shortfall.

At the moment, the world is facing an economic crisis, and Ghana as a country is no exception.

President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, his Vice, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and some bigwigs in this administration have all admitted we are not in good times. To some, the current economic hardships have been attributed the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

One of the many fields that have been badly affected by the global financial crisis is the petroleum sector, bringing a lot of pressure on the ordinary Ghanaian.

Taking to Twitter to solidarize with the people, Berla Mundi questioned how Ghanaians who receive as low as GHs300 or GHs500 are surviving in this situation.

“So people who earn about ghc300-ghc500 a month, how do they survive in this economy?” She tweeted.

Her tweet has seen a lot of comments from Twitter users who say indeed they are facing unbearable hardships under President Akufo-Addo’s government.
