Bawumia, Afenyo-Markin, storm NIB office over Wontumi’s detention

Former Vice President and 2024 NPP flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, and Minority Leader Afenyo-Markin beseiged the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on Friday over the detention of Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi.

As part of an ongoing criminal investigation, Chairman Wontumi was recently transferred to the custody of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) in the aftermath of his detention by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO)

This has contributed to tensions among political factions in the country.

Efforts to satisfy EOCO’s bail conditions, which include a GHs50 million bond with two justified sureties, are allegedly being led by Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

The NIB premises have been guarded with tight security as several NPP Members of Parliament, senior party officials, and a large number of supporters have gathered at the NIB premises to express their support.

The Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi, is being investigated for criminal activities.

He has been accused of fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering.

This information was made known by Deputy Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Justice Srem-Sai in a statement posted on his official X account on Thursday, May 29.

He wrote, “Suspect BERNARD ANTWI BOASIAKO, a.k.a. Chairman Wontumi, is under investigation for various criminal offences (including fraud, causing financial loss to the State, and money laundering)”.

According to him, the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) is assisting with the probe to recover suspected proceeds from the alleged crime.

“The suspect is also under a second strand of investigation which is part of a larger international organised crime scheme. The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) is assiduously working with our international law enforcement partners on this second strand of criminal investigations,” he added.

Bawumia tops list of NPP’s prospective 2028 flagbearers – Global InfoAnalytics

A recent poll by Global InfoAnalytics has positioned former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the leading contender for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2028 presidential ticket.

The survey reveals that 57% of NPP supporters favor him as the party’s next flagbearer, reinforcing his stronghold within the party.

Currently the NPP’s candidate for the 2024 elections, Dr. Bawumia leads the hypothetical 2028 race with 48% of the overall vote. Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong follows with 25%, while Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum secures 13%. The remaining candidates collectively garner 14%.

Among party loyalists, Dr. Bawumia’s lead widens significantly. He commands 57% support, leaving Kennedy Agyapong at 22% and Dr. Adutwum at 11%.

The poll results suggest that Dr. Bawumia’s influence within the NPP extends beyond the 2024 elections. His tenure as Vice President and current role as the party’s flagbearer have reinforced his appeal among party members, positioning him as the frontrunner for the next leadership contest.

Former Dome-Kwabenya MP, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has declared her unwavering support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) once again in the 2028 elections, insisting that he deserves another opportunity just as past leaders who eventually won after multiple attempts.

Speaking on The Pulse on JoyNews on Thursday, March 20, she dismissed concerns about Bawumia’s popularity, arguing that Ghana’s political history proves that many successful leaders did not win on their first attempt.

“We are going to bring Dr. Bawumia back as flagbearer for the NPP. He is the best person to lead the party. We have marketed him before, and we will market him again. Every person deserves a second chance,” she said.

Drawing parallels with previous presidents, Adwoa Safo cited examples of leaders who had to contest multiple times before securing victory.

“Former President Kufuor went how many times before he got the nod? Former President Akufo-Addo contested in 2007 and lost, went again in 2012 and lost. After the 2016 election petition, he finally won. Even Prof Mills contested several times before winning, and President Mahama has also run multiple times. So why are they telling Dr. Bawumia that Ghanaians don’t like him? And now they want to put that in a report and expect us to accept it? No,” she stated.

She also pushed back against attempts to silence Bawumia’s supporters, insisting that every party member has the right to express their opinion.

Ghanaian rapper King Paluta has revealed that accepting money from Dr Mahamudu Bawumia did not sit well with some individuals in his circle.

In a recent disclosure, the rapper stated, “The money I took from Baweezy pained boys,” suggesting that some people were displeased with his decision.

King Paluta expressed disappointment that a fan who had previously supported him for Artiste of the Year (AOTY) had suddenly changed stance.

His tweet implied that some Twitter influencers were financially influenced to promote certain artistes over others.

I’ve seen one guy who was supporting me heavily. Even last week… Every time Paluta for AOTY. Yesterday, make I go see aa, he say I no dey deserve the award again. Every Twitter influencer on the payroll already?? Lol Ghana Music, wake up! (in Wendy Shay’s voice), King Paluta wrote in pigin.

However, netizens were quick to call him out, accusing him of engaging in the same practice during the 2024 general elections.

During the 2024 elections, he was seen in the company of then flagbearer Dr Bawumia, where he shared the stage with party executives at some rallies.

While King Paluta has not disclosed the amount he received, his confirmation has sparked debates about musicians and their involvement in political endorsements.

Betting tax was never enforced – Fmr Finance Minister

Former Finance Minister Mohammed Amin Adam has noted that the Akufo-Addo administration never enforced the controversial betting tax.

He maintained that while the tax was introduced, it was never implemented under his leadership.

His response comes after Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, in presenting the 2025 Budget Statement and Economic Policy, announced the removal of multiple taxes, including the Betting Tax and E-Levy.

Speaking at a Minority press conference, Dr. Amin Adam criticized the claim, insisting that no revenue was collected from the betting tax during his tenure.

“Betting tax that they said they have abolished, we never collected Betting Tax. So to come and tell Ghanaians that you have abolished something that you have not implemented, is to deceive the people of Ghana.”

The former New Patriotic Party (NPP) proposed a 10% withholding tax on sports betting and lottery winnings, a policy that drew significant opposition from industry players and the public.

Despite this, Dr. Amin Adam maintains that his government never implemented the tax before leaving office.

In August 2024, during his campaign, then-NPP presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia reiterated his promise to eliminate the E-Levy and betting tax if elected in the just-ended general elections.

“We’ll also reduce Withholding Tax for small-scale gold exports to 1% to curb smuggling, and abolish the Betting Tax,” Dr. Bawumia promised during the party’s manifesto launch in Takoradi on August 18, 2024.

Bawumia’s concession call interrupted my sleep – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has disclosed that he was fast asleep when his main opponent, then Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, called to concede defeat in the 2024 presidential election.

Addressing clergy members at a fellowship meeting in Kumasi on Sunday, March 2, 2025, Mahama expressed surprise at how quickly the election outcome was determined, noting that he had not expected the results to be settled just a day after the December 7 polls.

“The night after we voted, by 9 am the next morning, everything was done; all the votes were counted. Who would have imagined? Because I thought we would have had to wait for the Electoral Commission for three days. But by the next morning, I was woken from my sleep that my brother wants to talk to me.

“I asked which brother, and I was told it was my brother, the Vice President, Bawumia. I asked for a minute, went to the bathroom to wash my face and brush my teeth quickly, and came to pick up my phone. When I checked, it was my brother on the phone. He said my ‘big brother, we fought a good fight and when I look at how things are going, you have won, so I am calling to congratulate you, after which I will go out to meet with the press and concede defeat to you,’” he stated.

Ghana’s 2024 presidential election, held on December 7, saw John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) emerge victorious. According to official results announced by the Electoral Commission on December 9, Mahama, who previously served as president from 2012 to 2017, secured 56.55% of the vote, amounting to 6,328,397 votes. His closest contender, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), garnered 41.61%, translating to 4,657,304 votes.

A day after the election, on December 8, Dr. Bawumia conceded defeat in a televised address from his residence. Relying on internal NPP figures that confirmed Mahama’s lead, he announced that he had personally called to congratulate his opponent. Bawumia emphasized that his decision was driven by a commitment to peace and Ghana’s democratic principles.

“The people of Ghana have spoken. The people have voted for change at this time, and we respect that decision with all humility,” he stated.

Mahama was officially sworn in as president on January 7, 2025, with Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang making history as Ghana’s first female vice president.

  • Mass dismissal, attacks on journalists and fmr govt appointees undemocratic – Bawumia

Mass dismissal, attacks on journalists and fmr govt appointees undemocratic – Bawumia

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed deep concern over what he describes as undemocratic actions by the incumbent National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.

In a strongly worded statement shared on his Facebook page on Wednesday, February 20, Dr. Bawumia criticized the mass dismissal of public servants employed during the previous administration, as well as recent attacks on journalists and former government officials.

According to him, the dismissal of individuals who were legally employed under the previous government contradicts the ruling party’s campaign promises, which assured Ghanaians of job creation. He noted that rather than terminating appointments, the government should focus on creating more employment opportunities.

“It is ironic that a party which campaigned on the wings of jobs for all Ghanaians is arbitrarily dismissing the same Ghanaians, rendering them jobless, just because a different government employed them,” Dr. Bawumia stated.

He described it as unfortunate that highly qualified individuals are being removed from their positions simply because they are related to or associated with members of the previous government.

Beyond the job dismissals, Dr. Bawumia highlighted increasing attacks on journalists, the use of the military to raid the homes of former government officials, and mob actions against innocent individuals and state institutions. He likened these developments to a military takeover rather than a peaceful democratic transition.

“These are certainly worrying times for our democracy, and the earlier action is taken to protect institutions and democratic practice, the better it would be for Ghana’s forward march,” he cautioned.

Dr. Bawumia urged President Mahama to be a leader for all Ghanaians and to put an end to these actions. He called on the government to reverse the mass dismissals and ensure that democratic principles are upheld.

“We must advance our democracy. We must protect our state institutions. We must uphold our Constitution. Ghana can do better. Ghana must do better!” he concluded.

Last week, approximately 12 individuals were involved in a raid at the Cantonments residence of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, who is currently outside the country. Five were in military gear, one was in police uniform, and the rest were dressed in civilian attire. The motive behind the operation, which has been condemned by both the Minority and Majority in Parliament, remains unclear. However, the Minority has called for the prosecution of the raiders.

Meanwhile, Attorney-General Dr. Dominic Ayine is expected to respond to a suit filed by the National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, over the mass dismissal of public sector employees, which was directed by the Chief of Staff on February 10.

There is a general atmosphere of insecurity – Bawumia

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed deep concerns about what he describes as a worsening security situation in the country, warning that Ghana is veering away from democratic principles.

In a strongly worded Facebook post, Bawumia cited recent developments, including attacks on journalists, military interventions in communities, and dismissals of public servants, as evidence of a deteriorating climate.

“There is a general atmosphere of insecurity with attacks on journalists, the use of our military to raid the homes of former government officials and communities, as well as mobs attacking innocent individuals and state institutions,” he stated. “This is rather reminiscent of a military takeover and not a peaceful democratic transition.”

The former vice president, who had earlier pledged his support for the new administration following the 2024 elections, lamented what he saw as politically motivated dismissals of government workers. He criticized the administration’s approach, arguing that job creation should take precedence over mass layoffs.

“The least a party that campaigned on jobs could do under conditions of unemployment is to also innovate and create jobs rather than dismiss people,” Bawumia remarked, alleging that workers were being targeted simply for their affiliations with the previous government.

He further raised alarm over reported plans to terminate contracts of professionals such as nurses, teachers, and security personnel, warning that such actions would be detrimental to national progress.

Calling for urgent intervention, Bawumia urged President John Mahama to uphold democratic values and ensure fairness for all citizens.

“We must advance our democracy. We must protect our state institutions. We must uphold our Constitution,” he declared. “Ghana can do better. Ghana must do better!”

  • Africa lacks leadership, innovative ecosystems and not talent – Bawumia

Africa lacks leadership, innovative ecosystems and not talent – Bawumia

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the former Vice President of Ghana, has called for stronger leadership and deliberate investment in innovation to drive Africa’s economic progress.

Speaking at Harvard University on Saturday, February 15, he highlighted the importance of building ecosystems that support technological advancements, arguing that talent is not Africa’s challenge—leadership and infrastructure are.

“Africa does not lack talent. What we lack is deliberateness, leadership, and investment to create the ecosystems where innovations and innovators thrive,” Dr. Bawumia stated while addressing students, faculty, and policy experts at the African Development Conference.

He detailed Ghana’s digital transformation journey, illustrating how the country has strategically leveraged technology to modernise its economy, improve public service delivery, and expand job opportunities.

Central to Ghana’s progress, he explained, is the adoption of the Ghanacard, a biometric national ID system that has provided over 85% of adults with unique identities, thereby streamlining financial inclusion, taxation, and government service access.

Another key development is Ghana’s digital property address system, which has mapped the entire country and resolved a long-standing challenge in service delivery and governance.

“A modern economy simply cannot function without a reliable address system,” he remarked, emphasizing the operational efficiency gained through digital innovations.

Dr. Bawumia also showcased Ghana’s leadership in digital payments, particularly through Mobile Money Interoperability (MMI), which has transformed financial transactions. He highlighted that the initiative has granted over 90% of the adult population access to financial services, making Ghana the only African country to achieve universal financial inclusion.

“Ghana is at the cutting edge of digital payments technology,” he declared, citing the nation’s recognition as the best globally in mobile money regulation.

He explained how these advancements have spurred the growth of e-commerce and empowered small businesses, particularly those operating online.

The former Vice President further discussed Ghana’s digitalisation of the healthcare sector, which has improved medical records and service efficiency. He highlighted the role of drone technology, in collaboration with Zipline, in revolutionising emergency medical supply deliveries to remote areas, ultimately saving lives.

“Ghana now has the largest medical drone delivery service in the world,” he stated, illustrating the impact of technological solutions in tackling healthcare challenges.

In agriculture, he outlined how the introduction of a biometric farmer database has enhanced planning, transparency, and financial access for farmers, strengthening the agricultural value chain.

As he concluded his address, Dr. Bawumia urged African leaders to embrace digital transformation with a mindset of possibilities, arguing that technology is essential for economic survival and development in the 21st century.

“By working together—governments, businesses, educators, and innovators—we can build a future where every African has the opportunity to thrive and contribute to a brighter tomorrow,” he said.

  • Africa’s prosperity and job creation depend on digital economy – Bawumia

Africa’s prosperity and job creation depend on digital economy – Bawumia

Former Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has underscored the crucial role of the digital economy in Africa’s development, emphasizing that technological innovation is the key to unlocking prosperity and employment opportunities across the continent.

Speaking at Harvard University on Saturday, February 15, Dr. Bawumia stated that digitalisation is no longer an option but a necessity for Africa’s economic transformation. He stressed that the continent must embrace the digital revolution to avoid being left behind in the Fourth Industrial Revolution, as was the case with previous industrial advancements.

“We are in the midst of a global digital revolution,” he asserted. “Artificial intelligence, big data, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things are not just buzzwords; they are reshaping our world.”

Dr. Bawumia highlighted Ghana’s digital transformation over the past eight years, citing significant progress in financial inclusion, healthcare, agriculture, and public service delivery. According to him, digitalisation is essential for addressing long-standing structural challenges and enhancing efficiency in governance.

“Our focus is on digital technology that can solve our problems,” he explained. “We are not looking to have driverless cars or humanoid robots at this stage. We want technology that can improve access to credit, enhance public service efficiency, and boost economic opportunities.”

One of Ghana’s major digital achievements, he noted, is financial inclusion through mobile money interoperability.

“When we assumed office in 2017, 70% of Ghanaians had no bank accounts,” he revealed. “However, with mobile money interoperability, we have extended financial services to over 90% of adults, making Ghana the only country in Africa with 100% access to financial inclusion.”

This, he explained, has enabled businesses to grow without relying on physical infrastructure, creating a more inclusive and transparent financial ecosystem.

Beyond financial services, Dr. Bawumia pointed to the transformative impact of digitalisation on governance, agriculture, and healthcare. The introduction of the Citizens App and the integration of government databases, he said, have significantly improved public service efficiency. In agriculture, the digitisation of farms and farmer databases has enhanced productivity and ensured better traceability of produce.

“Ghana is the only cocoa-producing country in the world with a fully digitised cocoa management system,” he noted.

He also highlighted Ghana’s leadership in medical innovation, stating that the country operates the largest medical drone delivery service globally, ensuring access to essential healthcare supplies in remote areas.

Concluding his address, Dr. Bawumia called for greater investment and collaboration among governments, businesses, and educational institutions to build a strong digital economy for Africa.

“The digital economy holds the key to unlocking Africa’s vast potential and creating jobs for the youth,” he said. “By working together, we can build a future where every African has the opportunity to thrive and contribute to a brighter tomorrow.”

He urged African leaders to act boldly and strategically in leveraging digital technology to drive economic growth and social development.

  • Democracy is the best governance system we have got – Bawumia

Democracy is the best governance system we have got – Bawumia

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President of Ghana, has reaffirmed that democracy, despite its flaws, remains the most effective form of governance for protecting individual freedoms and promoting accountability.

Speaking in Nigeria on Monday, January 27,Dr. Bawumia lauded democracy as the ultimate system for safeguarding human rights and ensuring citizens play a role in determining their future. Acknowledging its imperfections, he stressed that no other form of governance offers the same level of liberty and accountability.

“It’s not a perfect system, but it’s the best we’ve got,” he stated, underscoring democracy’s ability to balance governance with individual rights.

Quoting Winston S. Churchill, Dr. Bawumia added, “Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others,” to emphasize the enduring value of democratic governance over authoritarian alternatives.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic journey, Dr. Bawumia highlighted findings from the 2023 Open Society Barometer report, which revealed that 92% of Nigerians believe living in a democracy is important. Additionally, 69% prefer democracy to any other form of governance.

“This should leave no doubt that democracy has been embraced by the Nigerian people,” he said, commending the nation’s strong commitment to democratic ideals.

Dr. Bawumia, however, acknowledged that democracy in Nigeria still faces challenges but encouraged the nation to continue strengthening its institutions. He emphasized that the collective desire for democratic governance provides a solid foundation for progress.

“Let us strengthen democracy, for it is through robust democratic systems that we can achieve greater prosperity and political stability,” he urged, calling on both leaders and citizens to commit to building an inclusive and participatory system of governance.

By acknowledging both the strengths and imperfections of democracy, Dr. Bawumia encouraged a renewed dedication to improving democratic practices across the continent, ensuring that governance systems serve the best interests of their people.

Accept the will of the people for the survival of democracy – Bawumia urges African leaders

Former Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has called on African leaders to prioritize respecting the will of their citizens through transparent and fair elections as a critical measure to safeguard democracy on the continent.

Speaking on Monday, January 27, during a forum on democracy, governance, and political integrity in Nigeria, Dr. Bawumia raised concerns about the weakening state of democratic institutions and political stability in Africa. He cited alarming trends of political instability, constitutional manipulation, and a surge in military coups that have disrupted governance in several nations.

“Between 2020 and 2023, there were approximately eight coup d’états in Africa,” he revealed, adding that these incidents reflect a deepening crisis of governance in the region. He further lamented the actions of some leaders who amend constitutions to extend their time in office, warning that such practices jeopardize the democratic order.

“A few leaders have also changed or are changing their constitutions to allow them to stay in power beyond their constitutionally mandated terms,” Dr. Bawumia noted, emphasizing that these actions erode trust in governance and threaten political stability.

Highlighting the centrality of elections in a functioning democracy, Dr. Bawumia stressed the need for leaders, especially incumbents, to embrace the outcomes of electoral processes. “Leaders (especially incumbents) must trust the electoral process and accept the will of the people for the survival of democracy,” he urged.

While acknowledging the challenges inherent in democratic governance, he maintained that democracy remains the most effective system for ensuring political stability and advancing the welfare of citizens. He noted that adherence to the rule of law, respect for the electorate’s voice, and accountability are essential for democracy to thrive.

“Democracy is not without its challenges, but it remains the best system of governance when leaders respect the rule of law and the voice of the people,” he asserted.

Dr. Bawumia also extended his message to the international community, advocating for a united effort to combat rising authoritarianism and protect democratic principles globally. According to him, a commitment to fairness, transparency, and integrity in governance is vital for sustaining democratic institutions and fostering peace and development.

2024 polls: My early concession was for the peace, stability of Ghana – Bawumia

Former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has explained that his prompt concession in the 2024 presidential election was motivated by a desire to protect the nation’s democracy and promote peace.

Speaking on January 27 in a discussion on democracy, governance, and political integrity in Nigeria, Dr. Bawumia elaborated on the factors behind his decision, emphasizing the need to ensure stability during elections.

He noted that he had anticipated the Electoral Commission would take between 48 and 72 hours to announce the results. However, as tensions rose and the potential for violence increased with delays, he decided to act quickly.

“I was fully aware of the escalating tension and the possibility of unrest if the results weren’t announced promptly,” he said. “The situation was becoming increasingly volatile.”

Understanding the potential for conflict, Dr. Bawumia explained that his choice to concede early was a deliberate strategy to prevent unrest.

“I chose to hold a press conference the following morning at 9 a.m. to publicly concede, even before the official results were announced by the Electoral Commission,” he revealed.

His decision was aligned with his ongoing commitment to the core values of Ghana’s democracy. Dr. Bawumia noted that his swift action was aimed at minimizing the chances of violence while demonstrating political maturity and respect for the electoral system.

He emphasized that the peaceful transition of power is crucial for the sustained health of any democratic society.

Dr. Bawumia also underscored the importance of maintaining political integrity in ensuring transparent and effective governance, assuring Ghanaians that the electoral process would not be marred by unnecessary delays or confusion.

NPP National Treasurer tells Bawumia 2024 Campaign Team to render accounts

National Treasurer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Charles Dwamena, has directed members of the Bawumia 2024 Campaign Team to provide a detailed account of the funds and logistics allocated to them during the recently concluded campaign.

In a press release issued on Monday, December 30, 2024, Dr. Dwamena, popularly known as Dr. China, emphasized that accountability is non-negotiable and a critical step in evaluating the outcomes of the campaign.

“Any officer, be it an executive or a member of the campaign team, who was given funds/resources during the 2024 campaign will be made to account for the allocated funds/resources,” he assured party members.

According to him, proper accountability is essential to understanding what may have gone wrong in the campaign and ensuring the party’s structures remain transparent and effective.

Addressing a separate issue regarding ID cards for party executives, Dr. Dwamena clarified that over 90% of the ID cards for executive members, from the polling station level to the national level, were printed and distributed in 2022. The remaining 10%, he noted, are available at the party headquarters and awaiting collection by the regional secretariats.

“The issuance of ID cards to executive members has been very successful,” Dr. China stated, adding that this milestone has paved the way for the registration and issuance of ID cards to non-executive members, which is currently ongoing in various constituencies. He encouraged all non-executive members to take advantage of the process and register.

Responding to concerns about the management of party donations, Dr. Dwamena reassured members that all contributions are deposited into party accounts and not diverted into individual pockets. He explained that the party’s structures and protocols ensure accountability and prevent unilateral decisions regarding the use of funds.

“…The structures and working procedures of the party make it impossible for the National Treasurer to make unilateral decisions let alone spend funds without approval,” he clarified. “For every expenditure, approval is given by the National Chairman and the General Secretary, after which the National Treasurer sees to proper disbursement of such funds.”

Dr. Dwamena expressed gratitude to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong, and other prominent party figures for their financial and logistical contributions to the party’s activities, acknowledging their ongoing support.

Bawumia meets with manifesto team, expresses gratitude for comprehensive contributions

The Vice President and New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Presidential Candidate for the 2024 elections, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has thanked the members of the party’s manifesto sub-committee for their efforts.

During a meeting at his Accra residence on Monday, which included chairpersons, vice-chairpersons, and members from various committees, Dr. Bawumia praised them for their dedication in compiling a thorough and well-structured policy document, which was subsequently shared with the Ghanaian public ahead of the elections.

“I want to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation to all of you for your dedication and hard work towards putting together such a comprehensive document, which we presented to Ghanaians,” Dr Bawumia said.

Despite the election results, Dr. Bawumia conveyed his pride in the committee’s hard work and the transformative policies featured in the manifesto, which were put forward to the Ghanaian people for their consideration.

In his remarks on the surprising election outcome, Dr. Bawumia acknowledged that while many had worked tirelessly to present a detailed policy to Ghanaians, the party’s performance was significantly impacted by voter apathy, with over two million of its core supporters not participating in the election.

“It was as if our people held a meeting across the country and decided they wouldn’t go out to vote,” Dr Bawumia said.

The Vice President called for a thorough review to determine the reasons behind the high voter abstention among party members, promising that the party would conduct detailed research as part of its reorganization strategy to move forward.

Regarding the 2024 NPP Manifesto, Dr. Bawumia reassured the manifesto committee members that their contributions were valuable and not wasted, urging them to take pride in their work despite the outcome.

“God willing, we will all benefit from this document in the future,” he assured.

NPP’s loss was caused by media bias and voter apathy – Bawumia

The NPP’s presidential candidate in the 2024 elections,Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has emphasized that the party is focused on identifying the reasons behind the low voter turnout.

He linked the party’s defeat to this turnout, along with other factors such as media outlets not supporting the party’s message.

Dr. Bawumia noted that more than 2 million potential NPP voters did not cast their ballots.

During a meeting with party communicators, he reassured them that the issue has been recognized and that plans are in place to tackle it in the next elections.

“It was a big disappointment; there was no doubt about it when the results came because all the work we had done pointed to the fact that we were winning this election. I mean, there was clear evidence on the ground as to all the 270 constituencies.

“It was clear that we were going to do well, but on the day of the election, something was amiss. The turnout was so low. Everybody was wondering what was happening, why, and where are our people. And that was from Axim all the way to Zebilla, and everybody was wondering, where are our people? What was going on?” he questioned.

Bawumia, who doubles as the Vice President of the country, continued, “It turned out that everybody decided to stay, that they wouldn’t vote. And it was almost as if they had a meeting and decided on the message. The same message, no matter which constituency you went to, they would tell you they are not voting.

“So, at least you know where the problem is. And to solve the problem, you have to know what it is, so our people didn’t vote. That was the problem.”

He added, “The question now is why they didn’t vote, and that is a research question we are going to answer now. I must say we worked very hard, and I am very proud of the communication team. We were working against their ownership of, or support from, key media houses. Isn’t it so? Put that as a disadvantage in many ways in terms of communication. We had a lot of these key media houses who were not on our side.”

On Monday, December 9, Electoral Commission Chairperson Jean Mensa officially announced John Mahama as the victor of the 2024 presidential elections, securing 6,328,397 votes.

Dr. Bawumia, his closest rival, garnered 4,657,304 votes. Mahama’s party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), also made history by winning a majority in Parliament. Mahama is set to take office on January 7, 2025.

God’s ways are not our ways, let us stand together – Bawumia to NPP supporters

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has advised New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters against blaming each other for the party’s defeat, warning that such behavior could undermine the party’s cohesion.

In a meeting with party leaders from the Klottey Korley constituency, Dr. Bawumia pointed to low voter turnout as the main reason for the loss.

He explained that a closer look at the election results revealed that the NPP had unintentionally handed the victory to the NDC, rather than the opposition surpassing their previous 2020 performance.

“We couldn’t meet our expectations that is why we conceded. That doesn’t mean it is over. We lost a battle, not the war. I want to encourage you all. In this election, we were the ones that gave the victory to NDC. They didn’t win because their numbers didn’t change from 2020.

“Ours reduced by 40 percent. I want you all to understand that united we stand, but divided we fall. I have seen many people in pain, but I have an abiding belief in God. His ways are not our ways.

“Blame games will destroy us. Let us stand together. Stop the blame games. Let’s look at the future. Let’s concentrate on strengthening the party. It is not about individual ambition. I know we will come out successful.”

On Monday the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) Jean Mensa has declared the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, as president-elect at the end of the 2024 general elections.

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has called on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to put an end to what he described as “lawlessness and thuggery” by some of its supporters following the announcement of the 2024 election results.

In a statement issued on December 9, Dr. Bawumia urged President-elect John Dramani Mahama to take responsibility and ensure peace and unity in the country.

“I wish to call on the President-elect, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, to exhibit statesmanship by reining in his supporters in order to preserve the peace and unity of the country,” Dr. Bawumia said.

The NPP presidential candidate expressed concern over reports of NDC supporters besieging collation centres and “allegedly forcing declarations in favor of NDC parliamentary candidates while others have vandalised state agencies.”

Dr. Bawumia further criticized the NDC’s silence on these alleged acts of violence and intimidation against NPP members, state institutions, and individuals perceived to be NPP sympathizers.

“These wanton acts of lawlessness and brutality have been extended to state institutions and public offices, looting and stealing state properties in the process,” he added.

He cautioned that such actions undermine the democratic culture Ghana has worked hard to build and nurture.

The Ghana Police Service is said to have detained four individuals who are allegedly affiliated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for possessing thumb-printed ballot papers reportedly for the party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and four others.

A video circulating on social media shows police vehicles transporting individuals to the station for questioning.

A voice in the video was heard saying, “NPP are thieves and we have caught them. They printed plenty of ballot papers.”

In a post on the X platform, the national communications officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi wrote “FOUR NPP GUYS BUSTED AT ROYAL N HOTEL BY YOUTH OF POKUASE WITH CASH, BALLOT PAPERS, BVD MACHINES, A PRINTER AND OTHER ELECTORAL MATERIALS. • Bawumia declined our request for a ‘presidential interview’ – BBC

Bawumia declined our request for a ‘presidential interview’ – BBC

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), a public service broadcaster in the United Kingdom, has disclosed that the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Vice President of Ghana, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, denied its request for an interview ahead of the West African country’s elections.

Ahead of the December 7 polls, the BBC said it reached out to the front runners of the presidential race, the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) John Mahama and Dr Bawumia but only Mahama accepted their request for an interview.

“The BBC has asked for an interview with the other main presidential candidate, Ghana’s current Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, but he has declined,” the BBC wrote in a post on Instagram.

The ruling party is yet to comment on the subject matter.

John Mahama, who engaged BBC’s Thomas Naadi, discussed the idea of a 24-hour economy, whether or not he will sign into law Ghana’s anti-LGBT legislation should he be elected, and the issue of illegal mining.

On the verdict of the elections, he said, “I will accept the election results only if the process is fair,” and on assenting to the the controversial anti-LGBTQI bill, formally titled the “Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill,” should he become president, the former president said, “It depends on what is in the Bill.”

Touching on the cost of the 24-hour economy he seeks to implement, Mahama, when asked about how much it would cost, said, “you can’t put a cost on it immediately. 24-hour economy is not an event; it is a process. And so even while we are stabilising the macroeconomic environment and bringing inflation down and interest rates down, we will be implementing the 24-hour economy.”

When asked about the possibility of executing the agenda in 4 years, he said, “we will start at least”. Touching on the continuous implementation even after he leaves office, Mahama said,”four years, is that the end of Ghana? So after four years, that’s it?”

He added that it “would be Ghana’s loss” if the government that succeed’s his decides no longer to implement the 24-hour economy.

With regards to illegal mining popularly known as ‘Galamsey’, he noted that his government will combat the menace by “stopping mining in forest reserves and secondly, stop mining on water bodies.”

On the prosecution of anti-galamsey protestors, he assured that he would direct the Attorney-General to “file a nolle prosequi and stop their prosecution”

“To be remanded to custody for two weeks because of going on a protest, I think it was high-handed,” he added.

The protest in the country descended into chaos, leading to the arrest of 53 demonstrators in September. Among the detainees are Oliver Barker Vormawor, Grace Asantewaa, Felicity Nelson and Elorm Ama Ababio, popularly known as Ama Governor.

They face charges including conspiracy to commit a crime, unlawful assembly, causing unlawful damage, offensive conduct conducive to the breach of peace, and assault on a public officer. Despite pleading not guilty, the court remanded them.

Electoral malpractice as electorates make public used ballot papers during special voting

Some special voters in the Greater Accra region have been caught sharing images of their completed ballot papers, revealing their votes for presidential candidates Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

This breach of ballot secrecy is a serious offense and could lead to legal consequences for those involved.

The disclosure of used ballot papers undermines the integrity of the process and highlights the need for strict adherence to electoral rules.

Meanwhile, the relevant authorities are yet to begin investigations to capture the perpetrators.

Special voting, which is currently taking place at selected polling stations across Ghana, allows specific individuals—such as electoral officials, security personnel, and media representatives—to cast their votes ahead of the general elections on December 7. This exercise ensures that they can fulfill their duties on the election day without hindrance.

According to the Electoral Commission (EC), around 131,478 individuals, representing 0.007% of the total electorate of 18,741,159, are expected to participate in today’s special voting.

  • The exchange rate has been better under the NPP – Bawumia

The exchange rate has been better under the NPP – Bawumia

Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has claimed that the NPP government has managed the exchange rate more effectively than the National Democratic Congress (NDC), despite facing significant global economic challenges.

Dr. Bawumia compared the performances of the two parties, emphasizing that under the NPP government, the Ghanaian cedi has depreciated by 72% over eight years, a figure he described as lower than the NDC’s 74% depreciation during their tenure.

“I want to talk about the exchange rate and I want them (NDC) to listen because they don’t understand. When it comes to the exchange rate, we measure the performance by the rates of depreciation. When you look at their period, the cedi depreciated by 74% without a global crisis, no Russia-Ukraine war, no COVID-19 outbreak, and no global economic recession. Under the NPP for eight years with a global economic crisis, we have depreciated the cedi by 72%, which is lower than their depreciation,” he stated.

The Vice President argued that the NPP’s handling of the exchange rate demonstrates superior economic management compared to the NDC, particularly as the latter governed during a period of relative global stability.

He also stressed that the performance of the exchange rate should be judged based on the rate of depreciation rather than nominal values, adding, “The NDC doesn’t understand how exchange rates are measured and managed.”

Dr. Bawumia urged Ghanaians to consider the broader context of global economic challenges when assessing the government’s performance. He reaffirmed the NPP’s commitment to stabilizing the economy despite unprecedented global crises, touting the party’s resilience in navigating difficult economic conditions.

  • Lady who drove Bawumia in Ghana’s first electric bus not a ‘kayayo’

Lady who drove Bawumia in Ghana’s first electric bus not a ‘kayayo’

The woman who drove Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia during the pilot phase of Ghana’s electric bus programme was not a former head porter (kayayo), contrary to claims by Deputy Minister for Transport, Hassan Tampuli.

Hassan Tampuli, speaking on Citi FM’s Citi Breakfast Show on November 28, 2024, had lauded a government initiative that trained kayayei to operate electric buses, asserting that one of the beneficiaries drove the Vice President during the event. His comments, made between 32:04 and 32:31 minutes into the second hour of the show, sparked widespread reactions on social media.

“You made mention of the fact that we trained some specially selected kayayei. So, yesterday, for example, they were given their tools and certificates to commence driving. Yesterday, one of them drove us from Adenta to Kimbu,” Tampuli stated.

However, investigations reveal that the driver, identified as Mary Lalako Agboli, was neither a kayayo nor a participant in the government’s recently announced head porter training initiative.

Mary is a professional bus driver who trained under the Network of Women Growth (NEWIG Ghana), a non-profit organization focused on empowering women through vocational and entrepreneurial training. She graduated from NEWIG Ghana’s Professional Driving Initiative and has been employed with Aayalolo, a bus rapid transit system, for nearly six years.

A June 2024 article by NEWIG Ghana titled Mary Lalako Agboli: Breaking Stereotypes and Driving Towards Success documented her career progression, confirming that she was already an experienced bus driver at the time the government launched its kayayei training programme on May 30, 2024.

Further evidence includes a February 2020 news report by Channel One TV (formerly Citi TV), featuring footage of Mary driving an Aayalolo bus, and a September 2024 Instagram post showing her with the CEO of NEWIG Ghana.

    https://twitter.com/Rasta4NDC/status/1862096452752662847?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1862096452752662847%7Ctwgr%5E1c88e0470f599edbfee04f02bfccff204d4d84a7%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fthefeatherpost.com%2Fsocial-media-users-dig-up-photos-videos-of-bawumias-kayayo-driver-driving-mahamas-ayalolo-bus%2F

Given her professional background, Mary could not have been a beneficiary of the kayayei training programme, as claimed by Hassan Tampuli. She was already an established bus driver with years of experience prior to the government’s initiative.

  • Mahama, Bawumia, other political party leaders sign peace pact

Mahama, Bawumia, other political party leaders sign peace pact

Presidential candidates contesting the December 7 elections have signed a peace pact as a sign of their commitment to ensure and uphold peace ahead of the 2024 polls, during and after.

The event took place at the Kempinski Hotel, Gold Coast City, Accra, under the theme: Pursuing Peaceful Elections, Non-Violence, and Justice.

Currently, 13 presidential candidates are officially contesting Ghana’s 2024 elections.

The current vice president and flagbearer of the ruling (NPP), Mahamudu Bawumia, and former president and presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, are the two leading candidates in contention to win the poll.

Others include independent candidates such as Alan Kyerematen and George Twum-Barima-Adu.

Speaking at the signing of the 4th Presidential Election Peace Pact in Accra on Thursday, November 28, Jean Mensa encouraged confidence in the electoral process and emphasised the importance of a peaceful and stable environment during the elections.

She reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to promoting peace throughout the electoral process leading up to the 2024 general elections.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), made a passionate appeal to political parties, the media, and security agencies to preserve peace during and after the elections. He stressed the need for all actors to ensure peace prevails, emphasising that Ghana has always passed the test of democracy during elections.

In attendance for the signing of the peace pact, John Mahama remarked that although the NDC will protect the country’s peace, the onus lies on all to play their part in safeguarding the country’s peace.

“We are all too aware of the devastating consequences of electoral violence in other countries. We cannot afford to traverse that same path. As patriotic citizens, we have a collective responsibility to ensure our country remains a beacon of peace and stability in our subregion, and we in the NDC stand prepared to play our part to achieve this,” he said.

His primary contender, Dr Bawumia, also assured that, “As we head into the December 2024 polls, the 9th presidential elections in Ghana, nine days from today, I am certain of two outcomes. Ghana will win, and peace will reign.”

He also added that “My plea to everybody involved in the electioneering process, including candidates, political parties, electoral officers, voters, the media, security, and the general public, is to take responsibility for ensuring peace and harmony seriously and to demonstrate that we are not reluctant Democrats.”

Ghana will win and peace will reign – Bawumia shares outcome of 2024 polls

Vice President and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed confidence that the 2024 general elections will be peaceful and further cement Ghana’s reputation as a beacon of democracy.

Speaking at the national signing of the peace pact on Thursday, November 28, 2024, Dr. Bawumia assured, “As we head into the December 2024 polls, the 9th presidential elections in Ghana, nine days from today, I am certain of two outcomes. Ghana will win and peace will reign.”

He highlighted Ghana’s track record as a law-abiding country and urged all stakeholders to uphold the values of democracy. “We have been here before and can prove again that Ghana is a shining example of a resilient democracy,” he emphasized.

Dr. Bawumia appealed to electoral stakeholders to take their roles seriously in fostering harmony.

“My plea to everybody involved in the electioneering process, including candidates, political parties, electoral officers, voters, the media, security, and the general public, is to take responsibility for ensuring peace and harmony seriously and to demonstrate that we are not reluctant democrats.”

The Vice President added, “We will come out of this election stronger as a nation.”

The event also saw other political leaders, including John Dramani Mahama, flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), signing the peace pact aimed at promoting a peaceful electoral process.

Mahama, however, cautioned that peace agreements must be backed by genuine actions to maintain trust. “There is reason to be concerned that the signing of this pact, though well-intentioned, could amount to nothing if not followed by concrete actions to guarantee the peace by the stakeholders and government,” he warned.

He underscored the importance of aligning declarations with actions, adding, “It is all well and good for us to commit to peace and recite beautiful platitudes. However, all efforts to build peace before, during, and after the 2024 elections would be futile if mistrust and insincerity persist. Mistrust arises when there is a disconnect between words and actions, compounded by gaslighting from those in authority.”

Drawing from past experiences, Mahama recalled the violence during the 2020 general elections and the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election. “We all recall the appalling spectacle of masked men acting on the orders of operatives of the government, shooting indiscriminately at innocent Ghanaians going about their legitimate electoral activity during that by-election. Some of the victims of that shooting incident remain incapacitated till now.”

He criticized the government for failing to implement recommendations from the Emile Short Commission, which investigated the by-election violence, stating, “The inaction of the government in the face of the murder of eight of our citizens during the last election casts a shadow of doubt on government commitment to maintain the peace. How are we to believe that such killings would not reoccur?”

Electoral Commission Chairperson Jean Mensa assured Ghanaians of a credible electoral process, stating, “Robust measures are in place to ensure the elections are peaceful, free, fair, and transparent.”

The peace pact, signed by political parties and their candidates, is aimed at ensuring a peaceful election and upholding Ghana’s democratic principles.

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has commended Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for his exceptional policies, describing them as outstanding among his peers.

Speaking to Abuakwa South constituents on Wednesday, Mr Kufuor entreated voters to go all out for Dr Bawumia, stating that his policies will be a great deal to alleviate hardships faced by Ghanaians.

“I have been paying attention. Bawumia’s policies, particularly his focus on training the youth in entrepreneurial and digital skills, are good. If you don’t want this, what do you want? So I plead with you, he is not just coming for the NPP but for the whole country,” he said.

The former president believes that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is focused on forming a government that includes and represents diverse groups or interests.

“He is coming for an inclusive government. His policies will alleviate the suffering of Ghanaians. I have listened to all those talking about their policies, but I haven’t seen anyone with policies as good as Bawumia’s,” Mr Kufour indicated.

The statement from the statemen comes after criticisms due to his endorsement of Dr Bawumia, with critics, including Movement for Change flagbearer Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, urging him to abstain from public endorsements. Detractors argued that Mr. Kufuor’s status as a statesman required neutrality on election

Ghana’s first fleet of electric buses rolled out

On Wednesday, November 27,Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia inaugurated Ghana’s first fleet of electric buses (EVs).

This initiative stems from Dr. Bawumia’s intentions for reducing transport fares by approximately 40%, aiding commuters nationwide.

The country’s public transportation sector has experienced high fuel costs, inadequate infrastructure, and frequent breakdowns.

The Managing Director of the Metro Mass Transit Limited (MTTL), Albert Adu Boahen, who was speaking at the inauguration, disclosed that his outfit has put in place measures to ensure the electric buses remain in good working condition.

According to him, MTTD stations across the capital will feature auxiliary facilities that to assist in charging the buses.

He noted that the buses would be deployed to provide transportation services along specific routes in Ghana. These routes include, Ashaiman-Accra, Oyibi-Accra and Accra-Amasaman roads.

“This represents a remarkable 40% savings in operational costs, allowing us to reinvest in expanding and enhancing our services. Part of this cost reduction will also be passed on to the public through more affordable fares and reliable service.

“Additionally, electric buses provide a smoother and quieter ride, improving the overall passenger experience. The board and management are aware of the paradigm shift in passenger preference in the emerging segmented market in the road transport industry.

“We know that is our mandate as a company to ensure that the needed system, operational structures and resources are in place for the effective management of these buses,” he stated.

Bawumia has our votes because of Free SHS policy – Market women

Some traders at the Mallam Atta Market have committed to casting their vote for the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, in the upcoming December polls.

They explained that nothing can sway them from casting their votes for any other political party except the ruling party.

Justifying their reason in a viral video, they stated that the Akufo-Addo-led government has implemented a lot of beneficial initiatives.

The market women positioned the NPP’s Free SHS program above all the other party’s achievements.

“I will vote for Bawumia because Nana Addo has done well. Free education has paved way for my daughter to be in school. Bawumia and the NPP has tared our roads, this place doesn’t flood again when it rains. We will vote for number 1. My two children have completed school because of free SHS. I will vote for Bawumia,” they stated.

It appears the Free SHS has become a trump card for Dr Bawumia and the NPP to win the 2024 presidential seat.

Recently, The Independent Ghana interacted with some citizens regarding their voting choices come December 7, 2024.

Ghanaian truck driver Asmanu Yaya expressed that he has both enjoyed and continues to benefit from the Free SHS policy, as his four children are beneficiaries.

Two of them, he said are done with school and the others are yet to complete. Not having a formal education, Yaya says he would let the opportunity slip by his children. He will vote for a leader who has helped him lift the financial burden to see his children through school.

“I’ve personally benefited from these policies. I have four children—two have finished school, and two are still attending. Without Free SHS, I might not have been able to afford their education. That’s why I’m voting for the NPP and Dr. Bawumia this year,” Mr Yaya indicated

Food vendor at the Achimota station, Madam Asmawu said she has plans to vote again and for the the NPP because Free SHS has made it possible for families, regardless of their financial status, to send their children to school.

“Free SHS has allowed both rich and poor families to send their children to school, which is a huge benefit. Despite the tough economy, this policy has made a real difference. So I have a reason to vote for them again,” Madam Asmawu stated.

Another citizen by name Richard Osei, expressed his gratitude for the introduction of the Free SHS, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) schools. He noted that these initiatives have improved access to education and enhanced the quality of education.

The Free Senior High School (Free SHS) education policy in Ghana is a government initiative introduced in the 2017 September Presidential administration of Nana Akufo-Addo.

The policy’s origination began as part of the President’s presidential campaign during Ghana’s 2016 election period, and has become an essential part of Ghana’s educational system.

And now, despite the hardship Ghanaians are facing in the country under the NPP, several Ghanaians seem to have no choice than to give the NPP another 4 years.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, November 27, Ofosu Nkansah ridiculed Kyerematen for choosing to campaign independently instead of accepting a potential role as Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s running mate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He shared a video of Kyerematen riding in a pragia (a three-wheeled motorized tricycle) while soliciting votes, contrasting the scene with the prestige associated with being an NPP vice-presidential candidate.

“When some of us suggested in the early days Chief Alan should partner Dr Bawumia to bring unity, the way some of his people insulted us. But NPP vice is obviously more dignified than riding in pragia to chop 4th,” Ofosu Nkansah wrote.

The NEIP CEO suggested that Kyerematen’s decision to break away from the NPP has diminished his political stature and questioned the effectiveness of his presidential campaign, predicting a fourth-place finish in the elections.

Ghana Trade Fair Convention Centre with 20,000 seats to be completed by 2025 – Bawumia

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has announced that the state-of-the-art Ghana Trade Fair Convention Centre currently under construction in La, Accra, is expected to be completed by September next year.

Once finished, the Centre will be capable of seating 20,000 people, making it one of the largest in the region.

It is poised to become a landmark venue for conventions, conferences, and entertainment, contributing significantly to the tourism and creative arts sectors.

During a site visit on Monday, November 25, 2024, Dr. Bawumia emphasized that the project addresses a long-standing national desire for a convention space of this scale.

He highlighted its importance in advancing the tourism and creative arts industries, which are vital for the country’s economic growth.

“For a very long time, government after government have not been able to execute this particular project. It is a very much-needed project because we believe that some of the key pillars for the growth of this economy lie in tourism and the creative arts,” Dr. Bawumia said.

“But you don’t just become a tourism or creative arts hub by saying so, you must have the necessary infrastructure to support the growth industry. When you look at Ghana today, the largest auditorium that people tend to pay to play in is less than 3000.”

“So if an artiste has to play and the capacity is 3,000 people, they have to charge much higher prices to make up their cost so you tend to see the cost of shows being high and that doesn’t bring up the the demand because the cost is high and therefore they don’t make the requisite revenues or profits for their businesses.”

The Vice President, who is also campaigning for the presidency in next month’s elections, further stated that the development of the new 20,000-seat centre will significantly boost the industry and bring substantial benefits to Ghana.

“Ghana will be in a good position with this sort of exhibition centre which is 20,000 capacity, that is almost 10 times the capacity we have now.”

“That opens a whole new avenue for the creative arts and tourism sector for exhibition and for hosting conventions and conferences, which is a big market for doing so.”

“Ghana is a very attractive destination and we are going to be in a position with the Afcfta also here, there is going to be that synergy with hosting the Afcfta Secretariat here, there is going to be a lot of trade issues and a lot of conferences are going to be held here.”

“We see Ghana as a real centre for many conferences, for many exhibitions and for many creative art shows and so on. We already have the December in Ghana, Beyond the Return and so on. We will see so many opportunities that will help grow this economy and so we are very, very excited.”

Dr. Bawumia, who announced that the project will be completed within eight months, praised the workers for their excellent efforts.

He also expressed confidence that he will return as President in September to officially open the centre.

“I’m very impressed, and I want to thank the contractor, the management and the workers for what you have done. The work is very advanced. You look at this and you see the shelves and all the amenities have been provided; the roads, the fibre, the water, the electricity and so what they are telling us is that in the next 8 months, this project will be completed and we are going to hold them to it.”

“And I’m hoping that by the grace of God, I will come and commission it in September.”

“I want to take this opportunity to reassure the creative arts industry, because I know, talking to you and what we said we were going to do, to build this type of facility, which is one of the biggest problems the creative arts face; the space to actually do shows and bring in people.”

“But I want to assure you that by the grace of God, with the continuation of this project, we should have something for you that is world-class in eight months.”
