NPP can’t win next election with current leadership – Kennedy Agyapong’s brother

A former New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for the Bantama Constituency and legal representative of Kennedy Agyapong, Ralph Agyapong, has urged for the resignation of all national executives of the NPP in light of the party’s disappointing performance in the 2024 general elections.

Speaking on Okay FM’s Ade Akye Abia morning show, Ralph criticized the NPP for securing a mere 38% of the vote, calling it an unprecedented failure that underscores the leadership’s inability to maintain the party’s hold on power.

“Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was President of Ghana and he led us into opposition. The NPP must ask ourselves, when has it ever happened before that we received only 38%? It has never happened. If the NPP is interested in power, every executive must resign,” he stated during an interview on Okay FM’s Ade Akye Abia morning show.

He added “If you are in power and you want to break the 8, your minimum should be 45%. But to send us to 38%, no, please. It is imperative for all of them to resign.”

He went on to argue that, in order to break the 8-year cycle, the party should have aimed for a minimum of 45%, and suggested that a significant overhaul of the party’s internal structure is necessary, beginning with the resignation of its leaders.

“We need to undertake reforms. The reforms are already underway and everyone is bringing their suggestions, but as for the executives, all of them must resign,” he stated.

In the 2024 presidential election, John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) claimed a decisive victory, receiving 56.55% of the total valid votes, which amounted to 6,328,397 votes.

Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) followed with 41.61% of the vote, or 4,657,304 votes.

Other candidates collectively garnered 1.84% of the votes, totaling 205,721.

On the parliamentary front, the NDC secured a commanding majority, winning 183 seats, while the NPP captured 88 seats.

Independent candidates claimed 4 seats, and the Ablekuma North seat remains unresolved.

  • I don’t feel any hardship in Ghana” – Bantama market woman disagrees with Mahama on the economy

I don’t feel any hardship in Ghana” – Bantama market woman disagrees with Mahama on the economy

Prominent research bodies, including the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) and Fitch Solutions, have released projections concerning Ghana’s upcoming presidential election, scheduled for December 7, 2024.

Both institutions predict a victory for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, John Dramani Mahama, citing challenges such as declining living standards and economic hardships under the current New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.

These issues have been central to Mahama’s campaign message, which emphasises the need for change to address Ghana’s economic difficulties.

However, this narrative has not resonated with all voters.

In a video circulating on X (formerly Twitter), a trader at Bantama Market firmly declared her support for the NPP presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

She dismissed Mahama’s claims of widespread economic hardship with a passionate accusation of the former president selling Ghana’s port to a private group under a 35-year deal, resulting in increased port fees.

Asked if Mahama’s claim of harship in Ghana is true, she said, “As for me, I don’t see any harship in the country.”

She further went on to commend the Akufo-Addo-led government for its flagship policy, the Free SHS, for which she insists the NPP has her vote.

On her part, she chooses the NPP because, as an illeterate, she would like to see all her children educated, which would be possible only under the NPP-led government, which would offer a free senior high school program.

“Are you asking who I’m voting for in this election? Why would I vote for John Dramani Mahama when Nana Addo and Bawumia are in the race?

For me, I’m voting for Bawumia to continue Akufo-Addo’s good works, especially the Free SHS policy. I may not be educated, but what matters to me is seeing my children educated and not rearing chicks.

Even if Akufo-Addo had done nothing else, the Free SHS policy alone is enough for me to vote for them again” she said..

Faulty refrigerator caused Bantama fire incident that destroyed several wooden structures – GNFS

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has identified the cause of the fire incident that destroyed wooden structures and their contents at Bantama, near the Methodist Church in Kumasi.

“Investigators are busy at the fire scene to determine the exact cause of fire,” the Fire Service, however, noted.

On Wednesday morning, fire ravaged 8 wooden structures despite efforts from firefighters from the Komfo Anokye, Metro and Manhyia Fire Stations, who ensured all surrounding sandcrete domestic buildings and their contents were protected from the fire ruins.

Woman allegedly caught stealing tied to electricity pole in Bantama market

In a viral video, a woman has been restrained and tied to an electric pole after being apprehended for stealing items from market vendors.

The incident unfolded on a busy market day, leaving both shoppers and vendors stunned by the swift and unconventional justice meted out by the irate crowd.

Eyewitnesses reported that the accused woman, was allegedly caught red-handed pilfering various items from the stalls of unsuspecting market women.

  • Lawyer Raph Agyapong clarifies Ken Agyapong’s statement on Justice Sau’s residence

MP aspirant for the Bantama constituency and brother of Assin Fosu MP, Lawyer Raph Agyapong, has refuted a report implying that his brother, Kennedy Agyapong, accused the former Chief Justice Anin Yeboah of colluding with Asenso Boakye to sell a residence belonging to former Supreme Court Judge Justice Marfo-Sau.

He emphasized that, in Kennedy Agyapong’s address to the Bantama delegates, at no point did he accuse the former Justice of selling the residence to Asenso Boakye.

He clarified that his statement was far from accusing the former Chief Justice, adding that Asenso Boakye sold the said property without the knowledge or consent of the former Chief Justice.

“At no point did Agyapong say that His Lordship, the former Chief Justice Anin Yeboah (retired) has sold the said property with Hon. Asenso Boakye. Rather, he was emphatic in his statement that Hon Asenso Boakye had not obtained the consent of the former Chief Justice for the sale of the property. Thus, Hon Asenso Boakye has sold the said property without the knowledge or consent of the former Chief Justice,” he told this reporter.

He further continued that the former aspiring presidential candidate only said, upon the death of His Lordship Justice Marful Sau JSC, Francis Asenso Boakye, who is the present Member of Parliament for the Bantama Constituency and also doubles as Minister for Works and Housing of Ghana, consulted His Lordship Justice Anin Yeboah CJ (retired) concerning a proposed sale of His Lordship Marful Sau’s official residence.

“The CJ objected to the sale of the said residence since it is an official residence and thus state property. Hon Asenso Boakye then sold the said state property without the consent or input of the former CJ”.

Therefore, he said, the statement that was attributed to Ken Agyapong as having been made at a delegates’ meeting on January 12, 2024 in Kumasi is not accurate.

He is therefore urging the general public to disregard any such reportage that seems to suggest that Mr. Kennedy Agyapong accused Asenso Boakye for selling the deceased Supreme Court Judge’s residence together with the former Chief Justice.

“Asenso Boakye had not obtained the consent of the former Chief Justice for the sale of the property. Thus, Hon Asenso Boakye has sold the said property without the knowledge or consent of former Chief Justice”.

Ken Agyapong, Abronye join forces to campaign against Asenso-Boakye

The competition for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary candidate in the Bantama Constituency is shaping up to be an intense showdown between the current Member of Parliament, Francis Asenso-Boakye, and Ralph Kwame Agyapong.

During a recent event marking the inauguration of a library built by the incumbent MP in the constituency, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo commended his former deputy Chief of Staff. The president urged the electorate in Bantama to support Asenso-Boakye in the party’s upcoming primaries and the general election.

“It will hurt me so much if the people of Bantama throw him away. Give him the opportunity to represent you again and he will come and continue the good job he has been doing,” he urged.

In reaction to the president’s endorsement of his rival, Ralph Agyapong has disclosed that he too is garnering significant support from influential figures within the party.

This includes the backing of his brother, Kennedy Agyapong, who serves as the Member of Parliament for Assin Central and was a former hopeful for the NPP flagbearer position.

During an interview on Angel FM Kumasi, Ralph revealed that he enjoys support from various regional chairmen, including Kwame Baffoe, also known as Abronye, from the Bono Region and Kwabena Owusu Sekyere from the Ahafo Region.

“He supports me more than 1,001%. He repeated this two days ago. I was sitting with him in the room and he said, ‘Bantama, even if they like it, I will come and live there and do the work,” he stated.

According to Ralph, the president’s endorsement of Asenso-Boakye has opened the floodgates for his camp to go all out in the campaign.

“Has the president not come to do some of the work and gone? So it will be nice going forward; when he comes, Ken also comes, and then the two of us will also be facing off.

“Do you know those who want to come for me? Abronye is currently lurking at Asokwa. He says I should open up for him and I told the chairman to relax. Bantama will be exciting, so keep your eyes on Bantama. People are lacing their boots; Ahafo Chairman Sekyere has laced his boots and is stomping his feet,” he added.

Ralph Agyapong played a crucial role in supporting Kennedy Agyapong’s bid for the NPP flagbearer position, a campaign that ultimately ended with Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia emerging as the winner.

According to Ralph, he has received unwavering support from his brother to secure victory over Asenso-Boakye in the upcoming NPP primaries scheduled for early 2024.

Ralph contends that, under Asenso-Boakye’s leadership, the Bantama Constituency has experienced a lack of development, with allegations of oppression against party executives and delegates.

  • KMA goes digital with revenue collection

KMA goes digital with revenue collection

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has purchased 70 Point of Sales (POS) machines for its revenue collectors as part of attempts to increase income and close some industry loopholes.

The POS, which is to eliminate some of the human factors in revenue collection and mobilisation and also cut down on the under-declaration of revenue, forms part of the digitalisation processes of the assembly.

Speaking at a short ceremony to present the devices to the revenue collectors, the Chief Executive of the KMA, Sam Pyne, said the main objective of procuring the devices for the revenue collectors was to eliminate some of the human flaws in revenue collection, including undercutting, underwriting and thefts.

He said in the assembly’s attempt to tackle the challenges in revenue generation, “We sought support from some of our development partners and we have been able to do a database of almost all businesses and properties in Kumasi and so we needed to procure devices for our revenue officers that would also eliminate human shortcomings so that we can collect, print and issue receipts and also record same at our data room.”

The sub-metros that benefited from the devices are Subin, Nhyiaeso, Bantama, Manhyia North and South.

He cautioned the revenue collectors not to try to manipulate the devices, but to work according to the laid down procedure, as anyone caught to have engaged in anything that would short-change the assembly would be dismissed.

“KMA is committed to collecting all revenue due it and so, as officers, your work is to go and collect the revenue and issue receipts to people, keeping in mind that anything you do contrary to this would be met with ruthless sanctions including dismissal,” he cautioned.

The Presiding Member of KMA, Patrick Kwame Frimpong, urged the revenue officers to work with dedication and help the assembly to increase its revenue to undertake developmental projects in the metropolis.

He charged them to refrain from criminal practices that would cause them to be arrested and prosecuted.
    Data room

Taking the media on a tour of the specially designed data room at the KMA, the Metropolitan Director of Finance, Abbam Adjei, said the system had been fixed to record payments.

He said that immediately after payment is made, the system issues a command for the printing of receipts as well as the recording of the same on the database.

  • Otumfuo descends on Bantamanhene; warms him to stop disgracing Bantama stool

Otumfuo descends on Bantamanhene; warms him to stop disgracing Bantama stool

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has descended heavily on Nana Baffour Owusu, one of his sub-chiefs who is in charge of Bantama.

Otumfuo expressed worry about the activities of Bantamahene, which he said disgraces him as the overlord of the Asante Kingdom and the traditional stool that Baffour Owusu Amankwatia VI occupies.

Bantamahene appeared on February 20, 2023, before Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and the Kumasi Traditional Council (KTC) over double sales of land to one Mr. Amponsah and a church, creating confusion between the two.

After resolving the land dispute between Bantamahene and the parties involved, Otumfuo directed Bantamhene to release all documents on the land to one Mr. Amponsah, whom he first sold the land to, and again directed him to return the money he took from the church within 14 days, as he promised before the traditional council.

Otumfuo further instructed Bantamahene to ensure that by 10 a.m. on February 21, 2023, all documentation on the land should be released to Mr. Amponsah.

Otumfuo, who did not mince words with Bantamahene, said, “Baffour, with the stature of the stool you occupy, if such cases come before me, it means you are disgracing me. This is not the first and second time, Baffour, be careful. If you don’t repent you will supervise your own destoolment; tomorrow I will not forget to dismiss you. Bantamahene don’t deserve this prosecution. You are lowering the stature of the Bantama stool.”

“Baffour, what are you looking for in this world, how much debt do you owe for this too much rush for money, why ? Because of your father, you are making things very difficult for me,” Otumfuo stressed in anger.

Otumfuo further stated that “this is the same way your elder brother came to disturb me until his demise; you are also repeating the same. You are making me regret something. This is not how your father managed things when he became the Bantamahene. Your father was never petitioned before the Kumasi Traditional Council but why always you? So I gave you the inheritance because I knew you would walk in the path of your father. Now look at what you are doing. As we are speaking, there’s another pending charge against you now: on land, you used my name and sold it out.”

Otumfuo stated that Bantamahene doesn’t know the value of the Bantama stool he occupies.

“The stool you sit on as Bantamahene you don’t understand the meaning and the value. If you don’t take care, the stool will sack you. You lose your reputation any time you appear before the traditional council for such wrongdoing.”
