Some residents of Dansoman Roundabout near Zodiac in Accra assaulted fire officers after they reportedly arrived at the scene of a blaze without the necessary fire engine to combat the growing flames.

In a video posted by EDHUB on the social media platform X, furious residents are shown physically attacking fire officers for their inability to control the fierce blaze that had consumed a residential structure.

In 2023, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) issued a caution, stating that communities that assault their officers during emergency operations risk being blacklisted.

This warning came after a troubling incident at the O.A. Travel and Tours terminal at Kwame Nkrumah Circle, where unidentified individuals, angered by the perceived delay in the Fire Service’s response, began throwing stones at the fire trucks.

The situation was eventually brought under control when the police intervened, enabling the firefighters to proceed with their duties.

Greater Accra Regional Minister, Henry Quartey, has officially entered the race for the Ayawaso Central Constituency seat in the upcoming New Patriotic Party (NPP) primaries.

The three-term Member of Parliament and incumbent Greater Accra Regional Minister is set to face stiff competition from Moses Abor, the former Greater Accra Regional Youth Organiser of the NPP.

Bennett Larbi, serving as the spokesperson for a group of polling station executives, made a resounding statement about Quartey’s exceptional achievements in the Ayawaso Central Constituency.

According to Larbi, Quartey’s impressive track record includes the unprecedented asphalting of major roads in the constituency.

This infrastructural development has left an indelible mark on the area, reflecting Quartey’s commitment to improving the lives of the constituents.

Mr Larbi expressed the executives’ strong conviction that Quartey has not only met but exceeded the expectations of the constituents.

In recognition of his outstanding service, Larbi stated that the polling station executives took the initiative to pick up Henry Quartey’s nomination forms on his behalf.

The move is symbolic of the widespread support and endorsement Quartey enjoys from within the party’s grassroots.

Furthermore, Larbi emphasized that Quartey’s transformative leadership has set a precedent, with the infrastructural development positively impacting the daily lives of the constituents.

The asphalting of major roads stands out as a tangible manifestation of Mr Quartey’s dedication to addressing the critical needs of the Ayawaso Central Constituency.

“We decided to come and pick Honourable Henry Quartey’s form for him because he has done a massive job. It is unprecedented. If you come to the constituency, all the major roads are now asphalted… We have never experienced what Honourable Henry Quartey has done before.”

“So we think he deserves to be given more chance, that is why the polling station executives will not allow him to come and pick the forms; we have done that for him. We are waiting for when the time comes; the filing fee too, we will pay… He has done a good job. No regional minister has done that before,” he stated.

Archibald Cobbina becomes new MCE for Ayawaso Central

The President’s nominee, Archibald Cobbina, has been officially confirmed as the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the Ayawaso Central Municipal Assembly.

In an election held on July 13, Mr. Cobbina received overwhelming support from the assembly members, with all 16 members present voting in favor of his appointment.

The municipal assembly consists of 17 members, with one member absent during the election.

Supervised by George Kwame Amoah, the Greater Accra Regional Director of the Electoral Commission, the election results were confirmed and Mr. Cobbina was declared as the new MCE.

He succeeds Alhaji Mohammed Ababio Quaye, who resigned due to health reasons. Mr. Cobbina, formerly the Greater Accra Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), now assumes his new role.

During a ceremony to officially welcome Mr. Cobbina to office, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Henry Quartey, led him in taking the oath of allegiance, office, and secrecy.

Minister Quartey urged the new MCE to uphold respect for opinion leaders, faith-based groups, formal sectors, and all stakeholders in the performance of his duties, emphasizing the sensitivity of the constituency.

  • Special hospital must be built for only MPs – Henry Quartey

Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayawaso Central, Henry Quartey, has entreated the House to consider constructing a health facility purposely for legislators.

Mr Quartey made the “discriminatory” appeal when Parliament on Friday, March 31, 2023, paid tribute to the late MP for Kumawu, Philip Atta Basoah, who passed away on March 28, 2023.

According to him, the unexpected passing of Philip Atta Basoah has dawned on him that there is “pressure and stress” on Members of Parliament in the plenary, hence the need to cater for legislators.

“Mr Speaker, I sought Honourable Basoah a day before he passed. I was sitting by him when he had his usual kenkey. Little did I know that the following morning, he would be gone.”

“We have come too far as Parliamentarians not to have a hospital of our own. Maybe the time has come for Parliament as a whole to have a hospital built purposely for Members of Parliament. I know that may sound a bit discriminatory but it will be appropriate to have that. It would be for clerks too,” Mr Henry Quartey said.

Mr Quartey who doubles as the Greater Accra Minister also cited the death of Emmanuel Kyeremanteng Agyarko, MP for Ayawaso West Wuogon, as a second reason for his request.

Mr Emmanuel Kyeremanteng Agyarko died on Wednesday, November 21, 2018, in the United States of America after a long illness.

Meanwhile, Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has called on the House to provide annual medical reviews for legislators.

“The work is sidentry, it is about 95 per cent sitting down and we sit for very long hours. So instead of asking members to produce their annual medical records when we are freshly elected, I want to suggest that now we have an annual medical review. So you are not medically reviewed every four years, like Parliament does,” he said.
