    President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo reaffirmed his unwavering trust in Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, stating that he has always been truthful throughout their shared political journey.

    Speaking in Kumasi, the President urged voters to support Dr. Bawumia, emphasizing that they should not return to the leadership of John Dramani Mahama, who he described as a failed president seeking a comeback.

    President Akufo-Addo emphasized that Dr. Bawumia is well-equipped for leadership and deserves the opportunity to lead, as his vision has the potential to improve Ghana significantly.

    “Bawumia has never lied to me since working with me. I trust him, and Ghanaians must trust him too. I know him, and he will deliver. Bawumia is an honest man who can continue my good works; no other person can do that because it’s not in their DNA to do that”, he rallied the electorate.

    This is not the first time the President has reiterated his confidence in the NPP flagbearer in managing the country’s affairs if voted for.

    It would be recalled that in October this year, while visiting Wa in the Upper West Region, President Akufo-Addo commended Bawumia’s commitment, having worked alongside him for nearly two decades in various capacities, including as vice president.

    The President emphasised his confidence in Bawumia’s loyalty and abilities, stating that he has never doubted his vice president’s dedication to serving the nation.

    He noted that Bawumia’s track record and experience make him the ideal candidate to continue the NPP’s developmental agenda.

    President Akufo-Addo urged Ghanaians to vote for Bawumia in the 2024 general elections, describing him as a leader who embodies loyalty, commitment, and a clear vision for the country’s future.

    “In the nearly 20 years that I have been working with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, I have not had one day, one occasion to doubt his loyalty, to doubt his commitment to our common goal. And I have come here to ask for your support to make Bawumia break the 8.”

    “I see that the former President is saying all kinds of things about the number 8 he chose. That it means he is going to win. Breaking the 8 and having the number 8, that is not a good sign at all,” he said.

    As he looks ahead to his transition from office, he reiterated his focus on safeguarding Ghana’s peace and democratic integrity.

    “The peace of Ghana is a sacred trust. And as I transition from office, I’ll do so with the utmost respect for our democratic processes, safeguarding the future of Ghana for generations to come.”

    “The security landscape in our region is dynamic and at times unpredictable,” he noted.

    He added, “The armed forces must thus remain vigilant, adaptable, and prepared to confront these evolving threats with resolve.     The President pointed out that under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, several initiatives have been implemented to strengthen the health sector, despite significant challenges.     “Over the past eight years, 202,527 medical personnel have been recruited, including medical officers, house officers, specialists, nurses, midwives, and administrative managers,” he said.

    “Under my administration, significant strides have been made to bridge critical staffing gaps. Over the past eight years, we recruited some 202,527 medical personnel.”

    “These include 12,132 medical officers, house officers, and specialists; 165,222 diploma and degree nurses and midwives; 8,688 support staff, including administrative managers, cooks, and executive officers; 1,303 pharmacists and pharmacy technicians; 80 medical herbalists; and 13,471 allied health professionals and allied health interns,” the president added.

    ““Recent data from the Bank of Ghana paints a picture of resilience and promise,” the President declared, noting that Ghana’s provisional GDP growth reached an impressive 6.9% during this period.” he remarked.

    The growth, he explained, was driven by strong performances in construction, industry, agriculture, consumer spending, and tourism. These sectors contributed significantly to the economy’s positive momentum.

    Highlighting another achievement, President Akufo-Addo pointed to non-oil GDP growth, which stood at 7.0%, underscoring the strength of the country’s economic fundamentals.

    “This demonstrates the dynamism of the Ghanaian economy and reinforces our confidence in its future potential,” he made this statement when he commissioned the magnificent edifice serving as the new headquarters of the Bank of Ghana at Ridge, Accra

    President Akufo-Addo explained that this milestone was the result of six decades of increasing demands and the evolving complexity of the Bank’s operations. He noted that the old headquarters, though rich in historical value, could no longer meet the institution’s needs.

    He said, “This new complex, built by Ghanaian architectural powerhouse GoldKey Properties under the leadership of Kwaku Bediako, signals a transformative era for the Bank of Ghana.”

    The project was crafted by Ghana’s globally recognized architect, David Adjaye.

    The commissioning of the Bank Square marks a significant step toward a broader vision of progress, reflecting Ghana’s aspirations to establish itself as a leading financial hub in the region.

    Equipped with world-class facilities, the new headquarters will strengthen the Bank’s capacity to implement reforms, improve regulatory frameworks, and attract investments.

    President Akufo-Addo expressed his appreciation to Governor Ernest Addison, Deputy Governors Maxwell Opoku-Afari and Elsie Awadzi, as well as the entire staff of the Bank of Ghana, for their professionalism and commitment.

    He also praised the architects, engineers, and contractors whose creativity and expertise brought this iconic structure to life.

    One of the most notable achievements, the President said, is the sharp reduction in inflation. From a staggering 54.1% in 2022, inflation has dropped to 22.1% as of October 2024, thanks to the effective monetary policies implemented by the Bank of Ghana. This progress has brought relief to households and businesses, renewing confidence in the economic stability of the country.

    On the external front, Ghana recorded a trade surplus of $2.78 billion, buoyed by robust gold and crude oil exports. The nation’s international reserves stand at $7.5 billion, providing a critical buffer against external shocks. President Akufo-Addo attributed these achievements to the prudent stewardship of the Bank of Ghana, emphasizing its indispensable role in navigating global uncertainties and fostering economic growth.

    He also enumerated the investments the government has made in infrastructure and human development.

    He said, “I can report, Mr. President, that you have steered this economy to strong recovery—the economy is getting stronger and stronger by the day under your leadership.” The Finance Minister added, “Macroeconomic stability is returning faster; growth has exceeded the target, and you’ve invested heavily in infrastructure and human development… and we also know that the banks are posting strong performances across key financial ratios.”

    Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Ernest Addison, said that he is glad the construction of the new headquarters of the Bank of Ghana has been accomplished during his tenure, in spite of the challenges, which included land litigation.

    Speaking at the opening of the Bank Square at Ridge, Accra, Dr. Addison noted that the headquarters is not only a physical structure but serves as a national legacy.

    According to him, the new BoG headquarters, which begins operations today, will house more than 2,000 staff and has several state-of-the-art features.

    “Today, we celebrate a transformative step forward in our journey toward energy independence.     The President reflected on the difficult times of “dumsor” (persistent power outages) under the previous government, which caused significant disruptions to both daily life and businesses nationwide.

    He reassured Ghanaians that the Bridge Power Plant would deliver a reliable power supply, easing the pressure on the national grid and tackling the energy shortfalls that previously hindered the country’s economic development.

    “This plant is more than a source of power; it is a beacon of hope and a testament to what we can achieve through strategic partnerships and a clear vision,” he remarked.

    The Bridge Power Plant is designed to integrate seamlessly into Ghana’s energy mix, providing efficient and environmentally sustainable electricity. Its cutting-edge technology ensures lower carbon emissions, aligning with the government’s commitment to a greener future.

    President Akufo-Addo highlighted the plant’s potential to drive industrial growth by supplying reliable power to factories, hospitals, schools, and households. The facility will also support rural electrification efforts, bringing electricity to remote areas and improving the quality of life for underserved communities.

    Flower Pot interchange to be commissioned by Akufo-Addo today

    President Akufo-Addo is set to officially open the Flower Pot interchange on today, Tuesday, November 19.

    Once operational, the new flyover will alleviate traffic congestion between the northern and southern sections of the Tema Motorway.

    The commissioning is anticipated to enhance travel between areas such as Cantonments, Burma Camp, East Legon, Spintex, and Tema, ultimately improving the quality of life for residents in these regions.

    The project includes an 802-meter dual carriageway viaduct with asphaltic concrete surfacing, a 140-meter ramp from Shiashie onto the viaduct heading towards Airport Hills, and an 80-meter ramp from the viaduct onto the Motorway towards Tema.

    Moreover, the interchange features a new road through the former tunnel at East Legon, an additional 200 meters of road connecting Cantonments from the Giffard Road interchange, a redesign of the Flower Pot roundabout and its approaches, pedestrian walkways on both sides of the flyover, as well as road infrastructure like streetlights, road markings, and traffic signals.

    The project, which began on March 7, 2017, was awarded to China Railway No. 5 Engineering Gh. Ltd, with Deoke Consult Ltd acting as the consultant. The 93-month contract was financed by Afrexim Bank and the Government of Ghana.

    “John Mahama’s 2017 budget sustained our economy to the end of 2017 through to 2018. Under President Mahama, the economy performed better, but under Akufo-Addo, it has worsened. This is because the NDC entered the IMF program just before leaving office. The benefits of this program and other economic policies by Mahama were supposed to be realized from 2017, which Akufo-Addo came to enjoy and even extended to look like he is managing the economy well. Today, he is the worst manager of our economy,” Opare Addo remarked.

    Pablo argued that the true state of the economy under President Akufo-Addo should be assessed from 2019, after Ghana exited the IMF program. He pointed out the depreciation of the Ghanaian cedi against the US dollar and its impact on businesses, describing the current economic situation as dire.

    “They promised to stabilize the cedi with their economic messiah, Dr. Bawumia. Now, the dollar is 17 cedis. Many businesses have collapsed; you import something today, and tomorrow the dollar has increased, and you need more cedis to import that same thing again. In 2016, 10 cedis bought kenkey with fish, and 20 cedis made fufu for the family. Today, those amounts don’t go as far, with cement now costing 110 cedis. No wonder Ghanaians are angry,” he stated.

    Touching on high food inflation, Pablo attributed the worsening cost of living to the government’s mismanagement, which he believes has angered many Ghanaians.

    On the issue of the Free Senior High School policy, Mr. Opare Addo acknowledged its importance and emphasized that the NDC would improve its implementation if it returns to power.

    “No government can cancel Free SHS; we must fix its flaws to improve it, and that’s what the NDC is advocating for,” he asserted.

    Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has strongly criticized President Akufo-Addo’s administration, describing it as marked by severe shortcomings in governance.

    Appearing on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Friday, Kpebu linked the country’s ongoing challenges to a combination of constitutional flaws and leadership failures.

    He argued that the president’s governance has deepened Ghana’s development struggles.

    “We didn’t write the law well; let’s accept that, and we can redraft. After all, we all agree that this constitution is our biggest headache. It is the cause of our underdevelopment because it has weakened all our institutions, most especially when we get very bad leaders like Akufo-Addo,” he said on Friday, November 15.

    While recognizing that past governments have had their issues, Kpebu stressed that Akufo-Addo’s leadership is unprecedented in its failures. “No previous administration has reached the low point that Akufo-Addo has set,” he remarked.

    Mr Kpebu’s criticism comes amid widespread dissatisfaction over the state of the country’s economy.

    The Ghanaian cedi continues to lose value against major currencies, severely impacting citizens’ purchasing power.

    Inflation remains high, and many are struggling with the rising cost of living. Youth unemployment, which hit 13.9% in 2022 according to the World Bank, further exacerbates the economic strain.

    The issue of illegal mining, or galamsey, remains another pressing concern. Despite government promises to tackle the problem, the devastation of the environment continues, and corruption within the sector has deepened public mistrust in state institutions.

    In light of these issues, Kpebu emphasized the urgent need for constitutional reforms.

    “I know the previous governments have not been good, but Akufo-Addo’s governance is the worst of them all.

    “Akufo-Addo’s level of poor governance is at a dizzying height, and we have never seen any of its kind,” he stressed.

    “We all agree that we need to work on this constitution; it has too many problems,” he stated.

    Institute of Progressive Governance (IPG), a policy think tank, has urged former President John Dramani Mahama to refrain from misleading the public by claiming that unemployment rates were better under his administration than they are today.

    Citing data from the World Bank and the Ghana Statistical Service, IPG clarified that the current unemployment situation is significantly improved compared to when Mr. Mahama was in office.

    IPG referenced the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) criteria for defining unemployment, which applies to individuals aged 15 and above who (i) did not work at all during the reference week, (ii) are available for work, and (iii) are actively seeking employment. This ILO definition, known as the “narrow definition” of unemployment, is intended to allow for accurate comparison of unemployment rates across countries.

    The think tank continued, “Unemployment rate is mathematically defined as the total number of the unemployed divided by the labour force and multiplied by 100%. Using this estimation with the data from the World Bank, the unemployment rate increased from 4.9% in 2006 to 5.4% in 2010. While the unemployment rate declined considerably to 2.2% in 2013, it unfortunately went up to 6.8% in 2015, the highest in over a decade!

    “Even though President Mahama left the unemployment rate at 5.2% in 2016, the 6.8% unemployment rate registered under him as a president in 2015 still remains the highest since 2005! The average unemployment rate under Mr. Mahama as the president (from 2013 to 2016) is 4.65%!

    IPG explained further that the highest unemployment rate under Akufo-Addo was 3.4%, which was recorded in 2017. This rate, however, declined marginally to 3.3% in 2018 and further to 3.2% in 2019 but went up to 3.3% in 2020 and was maintained at 3.3% in 2021 before declining to 3.1% in 2022 and repeating at 3.1% in 2023. Hence, the average unemployment rate in the last seven years (from 2017 to 2023) is 3.24%!

    “It is therefore misleading for Mr. John Mahama to tell Ghanaians that unemployment rates recorded under Akufo-Addo are worse than those recorded under him as a president of Ghana. Mr. Mahama’s average unemployment rate of 4.65% is higher than Nana Akuffo Addo’s 3.24%!” IPG opined.

    The think tank noted that the Ghana Statistical Service, in its recent surveys, has used a broad unemployment definition to estimate unemployment rates for the country.

    “This definition relaxes the ILO’s condition of job chasing. The estimation is reasonable because Ghana’s hugely informal economy does not encourage job seekers to write applications or move from one office to the other in search of jobs. In reality, while many Ghanaian job seekers are not seeking jobs, most of them are available and ready to work.

    While this measure provides a close reality to Ghana’s unemployment situation, it cannot be used to compare to the unemployment situations in other countries. It is purely for internal policy purposes, and IPG commends the Ghana Statistical Service for providing such additional information on the unemployment situation in the country,” they stated.

    “Indeed, by using the broad measure of the unemployment rate, Ghana’s unemployment rate increased from 13.3% during the first quarter of 2022 to 14.9% in the third quarter of 2023 (see Ghana Statistical Service Report, February 2024, page 6).

    “This does not mean that the unemployment rate of 5.2% (a narrow measure in 2016) left by Mr. Mahama is what has increased to 14.9% in 2023! No! That is wrong and misleading! Using the ILO’s measure (narrow measure), Ghana’s unemployment rate has declined from 5.2% in 2016 to 3.1% at the end of the third quarter of 2023,” IPG suggested.

    In conclusion, IPG advised the campaign team of NDC to help Mr. John Dramani Mahama understand and appreciate technical issues before going public with them,” they added.

    “The world would not take him seriously if he gets such elementary issues wrong!” IPG cautioned.

    The President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has been conferred with the prestigious title of Grand Officier de la Légion d’Honneur by the President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron.

    The award ceremony was held in Paris today after an official working lunch between President Macron and President Akufo-Addo to deepen the bond between France and Ghana.

    The Grand Officier de la Légion d’Honneur is one of the highest ranks within France’s Légion d’Honneur, an order of merit established in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte. It is awarded for outstanding military and civil service to the nation. Conferred by the President of France, it is one of the most revered symbols of French appreciation and respect.

    The outgoing West African president was honoured for his role in strengthening Ghana’s relations with France, paving the way for increased cooperation on critical issues such as economic growth, climate action, education, and cultural exchange.

    France’s relations with Ghana, which are historically less strong than with the Francophone countries of West Africa, have been growing in recent years, particularly with the presidential visit in 2017.

    France and Ghana consult one another on West African security and political issues. The two countries are also in contact in the framework of the United Nations Security Council, where Ghana has been a non-permanent member since 1 January 2022, notably concerning the consequences of the conflict in Ukraine.

    In January 2021, President Nana Akufo-Addo attended, alongside French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Yves Le Drian, the inauguration of the Embassy of France in Accra, just after his inauguration for a second term.

    The Ghanaian President also visited Paris in November 2021, on the sidelines of the Paris Peace Forum. He was also present, as Chair of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, alongside the French President and the European Council President, Charles Michel, during the announcement of the re-organization of the French counter-terrorism disposition in West Africa.

    In October 2022, President Akufo-Addo received an honorary doctorate from Paris-Panthéon Sorbonne University, in the presence, notably, of Minister of State Chrysoula Zacharopoulou. He also met the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Catherine Colonna.

    According to the Ministère de l’Europe et des Affaires Étrangères, as of January 2023, more than 70 French companies are currently present in Ghana, with investment stock of €1.3 billion, making it the seventh-largest destination for French foreign direct investment in Africa and the fourth-largest in ECOWAS.

    The largest investment in the country is that of Bolloré, in partnership with Maersk, for the Tema seaport expansion project.

    The Agence Française de Développement (AFD, French Development Agency) has an office in Accra and is active in various fields in the country, primarily through non-sovereign loans. The AFD has financed structural projects, like the Kumasi-Bolgatanga electrical line, which has enabled many Ghanaians to receive electricity, particularly in rural areas.

    This line, tied in with the electrical interconnection between Ghana and Burkina Faso, was inaugurated by President Nana Akufo-Addo in October 2022. The AFD is also active in the north-west of the country in the development of irrigation networks, to help Ghanaian farmers improve yields. By providing several banks with the SUNREF credit line (€30 million), the AFD helps many SMEs finance investments in renewable energy and energy efficiency.

    The construction of the new headquarters sparked debates last year, especially after the Central Bank reported losses amounting to GH¢60 billion in 2022.

    Reports revealed that the bank invested around US$250 million in the project.

    Many National Democratic Congress legislators and some Ghanaians questioned the necessity of the project, particularly given the bank’s financial losses.

    However, the Central Bank explained that the current building could not withstand natural disasters like earthquakes.

    The bank also emphasized that halting the project was not feasible due to the costs already incurred.

    In response, Stephen Opata, Special Advisor to the BoG Governor, stated, “The project was already far along. Halting it at that stage would not have been the most prudent choice.”

    Editor-in-Chief of The Daily Searchlight, Kenneth Kwabena Agyei Kuranchie, has formally petitioned President Akufo-Addo to remove Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng from office, alleging severe misconduct and violations of both his official oaths and confidentiality obligations.

    In a letter dated October 18, 2024, Mr Kuranchie argued that Agyebeng’s actions meet the criteria for dismissal under Section 15.(1) of the Special Prosecutor Act (Act 959), which outlines the conditions under which the Special Prosecutor may be removed.

    “Petitioner presents this petition for the removal of the Special Prosecutor, Mr Kissi Agyebeng, on the authority of Section 15. (1) of the Special Prosecutor Act, (Act 959) of 2017,” noting that grounds for removal include “stated misbehaviour, incompetence, incapacity…willful violation of the Official Oath and Oath of Secrecy.”

    Among his claims, Kuranchie asserts that Agyebeng ordered polygraph tests for about 80% of the Office’s personnel, conducted not by Ghana’s National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) but by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

    “Petitioner states, first, that this work was not done by the N.I.B, and second, this work was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), an agency of the government of the United States of America, a foreign nation,” Mr Kuranchie asserted.

    Mr Kuranchie contends that such actions also represent a “willful violation of the Official Oath and Oath of Secrecy” and pose potential threats to national security and economic interests.

    Mr Kuranchie insists that these alleged infractions render Agyebeng unfit for his role, urging the President to act in accordance with Section 15.(1)(a) of Act 959.

    In response, President Akufo-Addo has forwarded the petition to the Chief Justice for preliminary examination.

    This appeal follows a Supreme Court decision in July 2024 dismissing a separate lawsuit filed by Mr Kuranchie, which aimed to challenge the constitutionality of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

    That lawsuit contended that the Special Prosecutor Act, 2017 (Act 957) conflicted with various provisions of the 1992 Constitution. Kuranchie had previously withdrawn a similar suit last year but has recently renewed his efforts, seeking a constitutional review of the OSP’s mandate.

    President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has announced that the government is constructing 232 solar-powered boreholes across Ghana to enhance farm irrigation and support sustainable agriculture.

    The initiative announced last Friday during the 40th National Farmers’ Day celebration under the theme “Building Climate-Resilient Agriculture for Sustainable Food Security,” aims to address the urgent need for water management solutions as climate change threatens food security and agricultural productivity.

    The solar-powered boreholes, designed to irrigate an additional 3,144 hectares, will help farmers grow crops year-round, reducing dependency on seasonal rainfall and allowing for crop diversification. “This project not only strengthens our food supply but also provides our farmers with the opportunity to diversify and stabilize their incomes,” Akufo-Addo explained.

    A central part of this plan is the Programme for Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ 2.0), which focuses on climate-resilient agriculture to stabilize food supply.

    This comes at a time when the northern part of the country has been hit by a dry spell for over two months. Over 12,600 farmers have been affected, prompting government to ban the export of grains to ensure there is enough supply for the domestic demand.

    Finance Minister, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam announced that the government has purchased a $1 million insurance policy to protect smallholder farmers in the northern region against future droughts. The policy will pay out $5 million in the event of a drought.

    The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in collaboration with the European Union (EU), is rolling out a series of interventions to address food insecurity and support agricultural recovery in six targeted districts: North East Gonja, North Gonja, Central Gonja, Bongo, Kasena Nankana West, and Bunkpurugu Nakpanduri.

    Two Training of Trainers (TOT) sessions on improved grain storage technologies will be conducted to enhance the capacities of value chain actors, focusing on seed and grain producers. These trainings will provide knowledge on post-harvest handling of grains such as maize and millet, aiming to reduce food loss both at the farm and at storage centres.

    Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo has underscored the climate crisis facing Ghana’s farmers. “Climate change is no longer a distant threat; it is a pressing reality that our farmers confront every day,” he stated. The government’s response includes a series of proactive measures to equip farmers with the tools, knowledge, and resources necessary to adapt to extreme weather conditions.

    With 50 years of experience in farming, Nana Owusu operates North American farms, which employ 168 workers in the cultivation of crops such as cocoa and cashew. As part of his recognition, he was awarded one million Ghana cedis.

Prior to Wednesday’s engagement, the president’s Thank You Tour, we had received a letter of his invitation extended to the nananom that he will be in the region to thank us that at least when he came to us the people of the Western Region to ask for our votes granted him the mandate and that is tenure will be ending soon.

    So when the release came to us quickly nananom actually talked to us about what to do because the chiefs of the Western Region e have always been loving the president for some developmental project in our region and when those request were made to him he took it upon himself to initiate and execute some of these projects.

    “We decided to appreciate him for what he has done for the region in terms of this project. e met and we made contribution to erect the statue in his honor. We have honored other people aside the president. The chiefs of Upper Dixcove met and made contributions to put the statue up and it was around GH₵30,000,” he added.

    “Dr. Michael Addo is just one of many Ghanaians who lost their fortune to the programme. Bonds are the safest in the world except under the NPP government. The NPP has borrowed in excess of 11.5 billion dollars to invest in the programme but all to no avail.

    “As we speak now, the founder of the Kama group of companies has passed on after several criticisms of the government when he lost his investment.”

    “This government has failed us, and it is about time we gave the NDC the opportunity. We must choose the NDC as the party of choice since they have developed Kasoa,” John Mahama said.

    “It is investment in exploration that led to the construction of this mine, which we are told today will become the third largest mine in the country and one of the largest single-stream gold mines in West Africa. And I am thrilled to learn that apart from this remarkable mine, another large-scale mine is under construction in the Upper West Region.”

    Highlighting his administration’s achievements in the mining sector, President Akufo-Addo emphasized its dedication to fostering a supportive environment and robust legal framework for mining companies to prosper in Ghana.

    He pointed to the increased financial backing for the Ghana Geological Survey Authority and the establishment of Minerals Commission offices in Tamale, Wa, Bolgatanga, and Bole as significant steps taken to position Northern Ghana as a prominent hub for mining activities in the country.

    “Since 2017, we have increased budgetary allocation to the Ghana Geological Survey Authority to undertake more exploration to identify mineable lands, both for small and large-scale mining. Additionally, we have refurbished the office of the Authority, which was commissioned by the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources last week, to provide a conducive environment for staff of the Authority to carry out their operations.

    “To ensure the provision of adequate resources for geological investigations, we are amending the Minerals Development Fund Act, 2016 (Act 912) to increase the allocation to the Authority from mineral royalties from eight percent (8%) to thirteen percent (13%). And from next year, God willing, the Government of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will allocate Ten Million United States Dollars (US$10,000,000.00) annually to the Authority to support their geological investigations.

    The establishment of new Regional and District Offices for the Minerals Commission in Tamale, Wa, Bolgatanga, and Bole comes at a critical juncture.

    With the launch of this mine and the construction of another in the Upper West Region, northern Ghana is poised to emerge as the new frontier of mining in the country. Regulatory agencies must now be prepared to rise to the demands and challenges that lie ahead in supporting this transformation.

    Speaker Alban Bagbin has intensified pressure on President Akufo-Addo to sign the Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, also known as the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill, into law.

    Speaking at a media briefing ahead of Parliament’s upcoming session on November 7, Bagbin said, “I have earlier instructed the Clerk of Parliament to transmit the anti-LGBTQ+ bill to the President for assent.”

    Alban Bagbin voiced strong criticism against both President Nana Akufo-Addo and the Judiciary, accusing them of constitutional violations concerning the Anti-LGBTQ+ bill.

    The Office of the President in March officially requested Parliament to refrain from transmitting the Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values, commonly referred to as the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill, to President Akufo-Addo for his assent.

    In a letter addressed to Parliament on March 18, and signed by the Secretary to the President, Nana Asante Bediatuo, the request was made in light of two pending applications for an order of interlocutory injunction currently before the Supreme Court.

    The letter emphasised that it would be improper for Parliament to proceed with transmitting the Bill to President Akufo-Addo for any action until the matters before the court are addressed.

    Furthermore, it was disclosed that the Attorney-General has advised the President against taking any action regarding the Bill until the issues raised by the ongoing legal suits are resolved by the Supreme Court.

    In his address today, Bagbin alleged that the President and the Judiciary have undermined Parliament’s authority by stalling the bill’s progress, despite it being duly passed by the legislative body.

    Bagbin claimed that both institutions had “sinned against the constitution” and emphasized that they “must seek the opportunity to confess and repent to be forgiven.”

    The Anti-LGBTQ+ bill, formally known as the “Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill,” proposes criminal penalties for individuals engaging in or promoting LGBTQ+ activities. Parliament passed the bill in February, but subsequent lawsuits have prevented it from reaching the President for assent. Among the legal challenges are cases filed by journalist Richard Dela Sky, gender activist Dr. Amanda Odoi, and law lecturer Prince Obiri-Korang, each raising concerns about the bill’s impact on individual rights and freedoms.

    The Judicial Service of Ghana has addressed these delays, clarifying that procedural requirements are yet to be fulfilled in the two Supreme Court cases. A statement from the Judicial Service on September 13, 2024, noted that “essential procedural requirements are yet to be fulfilled by the parties involved,” and outlined that key defendants, including Parliament and the Attorney General, have not completed necessary filings.

    In Sky’s case, initiated in March, both Parliament and the Attorney General had reportedly not submitted their Statements of Case by July 31, 2024, just before the Court’s recess. In Odoi’s case, which dates back to June 2023, the Attorney General has yet to submit the required documentation, contributing to further delays.
