Chinese miners open fire on Sekyere Krobo youth, injuring two in clash over galamsey

Two locals at Sekyere Krobo in Wassa East District of the Western Region have been hospitalised following a fierce confrontation between the town’s youth and a group of suspected illegal miners comprising Ghanaian and Chinese nationals in the area.

Reports reveal that the youth in the area mobilized to halt the miners’ operations and upon reaching the site, confronted the group of miners, who were using heavy equipment such as excavators on the Bonsa River.

Tension escalated when the miners resisted the youth’s attempt to stop their operations and apprehend them. This led to the Chinese miners opening fire on the youth, injuring two, who are receiving treatment at Ahmadiyya Hospital in Daboase.

There are allegations that the Chinese miners had received permission to mine on the Bonsa River from local chiefs who had initially invited the foreigners to the area.

The miners were reportedly arrested by the Wassa East District Assembly and police, but the matter is said to have been resolved by the chiefs, leading to friction between local authorities.

In response to the recent violence, the Wassa East District Police Command has apprehended the miners and investigations into the incident are underway.

The incident comes after the China government encouraged the government of Ghana to take legal action against any of its citizens who violate the country’s laws.

Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Tong Defa during a press conference acknowledged that some Chinese nationals are involved in illegal mining and emphasised the Chinese government’s strong opposition to such activities.

“I know there are some Chinese involved in this illegal mining but we discourage them.We always request Chinese citizens here to do things legally, to do things according to laws and regulations and even traditional customs. I know there are some Chinese involved in illegal mining but we discourage them. Our president has told president Akufo-Addo to deal with any Chinese official who commits illegal sins in Ghana should be dealt with according to the law,” Mr. Tong stated.

Ambassador Tong Defa highlighted a 2018 agreement between President Akufo-Addo and the Chinese President, which established that any Chinese nationals involved in illegal activities in Ghana would be held accountable under local laws.

Current state of Ghana offers no hope – Alban Bagbin

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has called for urgent and collaborative efforts in fulfilling the responsibilities assigned to members of the House.

In his opening address following Parliament’s return from break on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, the Speaker expressed concern over recent events in the country, particularly regarding security issues during the limited voter registration exercise.

“The signs and signals of happenings in the country do not assure hope. I shudder when I am told that people going to register carry knives and guns, just to go and write names.

“What about when we are going to vote, and at the end of it all, the results are announced, and someone else has carried the day and not the other? I shudder to picture what will happen,” he said.

The Speaker also highlighted the dire state of the youth in the country, emphasizing the urgent need to address issues such as employment to prevent further deterioration.

“Apart from that, the joblessness, the homelessness, and the hopelessness of the youth cannot be taken lightly. We must act together and now to prevent a journey to calamity or a journey of no return,” he stated.

He announced that he would lead the legislature in taking steps to engage stakeholders to ensure a free and fair presidential and parliamentary election on December 7, 2024.

This initiative aims to prevent any breaches of peace and stability that could arise from a disputed election.

Alban Bagbin revealed that the parliamentary team, along with prominent clergy members, will engage with the Electoral Commission (EC), the Police, the National Security Council, presidential candidates, party executives, and others, all with the goal of securing a peaceful election.

Man nabbed for allegedly murdering his 2-year-old son

A 22-year-old man named Kwame Krah has been arrested by the police for allegedly killing and burying his two-year-old son.

The incident occurred at Koraso Ward 1, near Berekum in the Bono Region, and it is believed that Krah buried the child about a month ago.

The story, reported by Nana Kwame on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, states that the child’s mother had entrusted her son to Krah while she looked for a job.

Initially, the child, Kwame Junior, was left with his grandmother, but following an argument, Krah took the boy back.

Reports indicate that Kwame Junior fell ill, but Krah did not seek medical treatment, which allegedly led to the child’s death. Krah then reportedly placed the boy in a charcoal bag and buried him, subsequently going into hiding for a month.

Upon his return, the child’s mother confronted him about Kwame Junior’s whereabouts. After repeated questioning, Krah confessed to killing and burying the child.

The exact details surrounding the child’s death are unclear, as Krah has given conflicting accounts.

He initially claimed the child fell ill and died, prompting him to bury him. However, under pressure from local youth, he later suggested he had intentionally killed his son.

The situation became tense, with local youth threatening to lynch Krah, prompting police intervention. The police had to fire warning shots when their requests to take Krah to the station were ignored. Krah is now in custody, assisting the police with their investigation.

New counter-terrorism Act needed to address radicalized youth in Ghana – CISA

A non-governmental organization specializing in security and intelligence, The Centre for Intelligence and Security Analysis (CISA), has urged the government to implement new counter-terrorism legislation to enhance the country’s anti-terrorism efforts.

This legislation, termed the “Foreign Fighters Act (FFA)” by the Centre, would address the reintegration of radicalized youth and war returnees, as well as impose harsher penalties on individuals involved in terrorist activities.

CEO of CISA and former Director-General of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), Mr. Rasheed Inusah, emphasized the need for such legislation during a workshop for selected media practitioners in Accra.

He highlighted concerns about the absence of specific legislation like the FFA, especially given the reported rise in Ghanaian youth joining terrorist groups or participating in conflicts abroad.

Urging swift action from the Government, Mr. Inusah stressed the importance of enacting laws to facilitate the reintegration of these individuals and maintain national peace and security.

“The absence of Foreign Fighters Act is worrying as more Ghanaian youth run to war zones, terrorist cells; and return as radicalised lone wolves or form sleeper cells,” Mr Inusah said.

“In 2015, a 25-year-old Ghanaian graduate, Mohammed Nazir Nortei Alema, was recruited by ISIS but later died in Syria.”

He also underscored the growing threat of “home-grown sleeper cells and lone wolves” and emphasized the FFA’s role in empowering law enforcement agencies to prevent terrorist acts.

Additionally, Mr. Inusah called attention to economic challenges contributing to youth vulnerability to exploitation by terrorist groups, urging measures to address high unemployment rates.

He also reminded the media of their responsibility to safeguard the electoral process by avoiding sensationalism and dissemination of false information, while prioritizing safety and neutrality in reporting.

CISA, dedicated to addressing security challenges in the West African sub-region, employs various tools such as research and publications by analysts and security practitioners to achieve its objectives.

  • Job seekers in Ghana are more than entrepreneurs – Basil Anthony

Job seekers in Ghana are more than entrepreneurs – Basil Anthony

CEO of Modern Floors Ghana, Basil David Anthony, has voiced apprehension regarding the nation’s educational system, arguing that it’s generating more individuals seeking jobs than those creating them.

In an exclusive interview on the Happy Morning Show with Sefah Danquah, Mr Anthony stressed the imperative of fostering a shift towards empowering people to become creators of opportunities rather than mere seekers.

“One fundamental issue facing us as a country right now is that we’re creating too many job seekers. We need more job creators, and we need to empower people to take up that challenge,” Anthony asserted.

“It’s all about your dream and focus. Not everyone can come out from school and commit to the usual 9-5. Some of us need to be job creators,” he added.

He highlighted the limitations of the conventional 9-to-5 employment model, underscoring the necessity of instilling entrepreneurial mindsets early on.

Anthony’s comments come in the context of Ghana’s soaring unemployment rates, particularly among its youth.

With a population exceeding 30 million, he questioned the capacity of both the government and private sectors to absorb the annual influx of job seekers into the market.

“Schooling and everything is good, but after where is the current employment and unemployment rate at? Because there are only two sectors who can employ you, which is the government or public and the private. How many people can the government employ in a country over 30 million population?” he posited.

The CEO’s advocacy for a transition towards entrepreneurship and job creation resonates with government initiatives aimed at fostering self-employment and small business growth to tackle the unemployment crisis.

For years, experts have urged a reevaluation of Ghana’s educational curriculum to integrate entrepreneurial skills and mindsets, equipping students with the tools needed to identify and capitalize on business opportunities post-graduation.

Increasing number of jobless youth a threat to Ghana’s security – Fmr Cal Bank MD to govt

The former Managing Director and Shareholder of Cal Bank, Frank Adu Jnr., has expressed concern about the potential impact of youth unemployment in the country.

He emphasized his worry about the actions unemployed youth might take if they are not provided with immediate job opportunities.

When questioned about his concerns regarding the governance of the country, Mr Adu stated that his primary fear lies in the consequences of youth unemployment and what could happen if viable opportunities are not created for them.

Adu projected that Ghana might need to seek another bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) after the current $3 billion program, attributing this potential necessity to leaders prioritizing personal political ambitions over national interests.

He criticized the government’s decision-making, citing examples such as the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) and the failure to prioritize the national interest in economic decisions.

Regarding the DDEP, Adu advocated for a more compassionate approach, suggesting that the government should have excluded certain groups, such as prisoners and pensioners, from the program.

He highlighted the adverse impact of the DDEP on established financial theories related to pension planning and expressed concern for pensioners who had invested in bonds.

Adu also criticized the government’s handling of the situation, suggesting that they missed an opportunity to reset interest rates and ease the financial burden caused by the DDEP.

He proposed a more considerate approach that would have isolated and exempted certain vulnerable groups, such as pensioners, from the program.

The New Force is in for Ghanaian youth – Cheddar

The leader of the New Force, Nana Kwame Bediako, has pledged to empower Ghanaian youth by involving them in the country’s decision-making processes when he assumes power in the 2024 elections.

Speaking in an interview with Bernard Avle on The Point of View on Citi TV, Bediako expressed concern that the youth have been denied such opportunities for the past four decades.

He criticized the prevailing practice where politicians only use the youth during elections, offering monetary incentives in exchange for votes.

Mr Bediako emphasized the New Force’s commitment to representing the youth, stating, “I think that the New Force is standing for the youth in this country. We believe that in the past four decades, the youth should have the right to be a part of the decision – how and who is going to lead us and how they are supposed to lead us… In the past four decades, between NDC and NPP, there hasn’t been any young person who has stood up with the courage to say that I am coming in, and I am going to become the unifier.”

“That is what I am. I am the unifier between the youth and the government. I am going to be a president who will give the opportunity to young people, first of all, to be a part of the decision of how this country is choosing leaders.”

Highlighting the absence of a young unifying figure in the past four decades between NDC and NPP, Bediako asserted, “I am the unifier between the youth and the government.”

He outlined his vision to be a president who provides opportunities for young people to actively participate in choosing the country’s leaders.

Mr Bediako aims to address the issue of politicians enticing the youth with money for votes, stating, “So we want to eradicate and get rid of people going to the same youth and give them money instead, and after that, there is no development, there is no job creation”.

Through this initiative, he envisions breaking the cycle of reliance on financial incentives during elections and fostering a more engaged and empowered youth in the political process.
