  • ASEPA calls for the removal of Affail Monney over journalists brutalities

Pressure group, Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA) has called for the removal of Roland Affail Monney as President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA).

Their call comes on the back of recent attacks on journalists from security agencies without the GJA seeking justice for these victims.

In a press release sighted by GhanaWeb, the pressure group accused the GJA President of condoning the physical attack some security personnel exhibit anytime they claim journalists breached a law.

They reiterated that any form of violence and abuse on journalists should be frowned upon and must be tackled with all seriousness.

“We believe this is a betrayal of the GJA and its President not only to Mr. Caleb Kudah and Ms. Zoe but to the entire Journalist fraternity in the Country and must be treated with all seriousness.”

“We are therefore calling for the immediate removal of Mr. Affail Monney as GJA President, this is the only way the GJA can distance itself from the comments of Mr. Monney and show solidarity to their compatriots,” part of the statement read.

The pressure group noted that they are poised to launch a campaign against the GJA’s president, Affail Monney if he fails to resign.

  • Dont promote sensationalism – Affail Monney

The Ghana Journalist Association (GJA) has cautioned journalists against reportage that undermines the sovereignty of the country and threatens security as the December elections approaches.

It said while respecting the rights of Ghanaians to express their inalienable rights and legitimate concerns, the media should be mindful of the constitutional order and not promote sensationalism.

A statement issued in Accra on Monday by Roland Affail Monney, the GJA President, said media coverage and analysis of acts of criminality by the Homeland Study group, for instance, should not promote sensationalism and irredentism.

“The GJA is aware that there are historic antecedents to the current agitations that stem from the 1956 United Nations plebiscite which created a unitary Ghana,” it said.

It said as far as the GJA was concerned, apart from the 16 recognised regions that constituted the country there was no part of the country called Western Togoland.

The association, therefore, urged the leadership of the various political parties and stakeholders to cooperate with the security agencies and facilitate a resolution to the agitation.

  • Move away from fire service, ambulance journalism – Affail Monney to media

The President of the Ghana Journalists Association, Roland Affail Monney, has advised journalists to be on top of their game while reporting on issues pertaining to human trafficking in the country.

According to him, media professionals have to sharpen their focus on human trafficking until the canker is totally eradicated.

This winnable war, he said, can only be achieved on a sustainable basis.

“Human trafficking blatantly violates Article 15 of the 1992 constitution. Human trafficking does not only violate this…but also disgrace human beings who are the immediate bearers of God. So if the media are to be effective in this fight, we should move away from fire service or ambulance journalism, which means, we talk about human trafficking when it occurs but we need to sustain the fight”.

“Sustainability is a key element in this fight. So while we depart from the ambulance of fire service journalism, we need to sharpen our focus on human trafficking,” Mr Monney added.

He made this remark at the launch of the World Day against trafficking in persons in Accra Tuesday, July 21, 2020.

Speaking on the theme “stakeholders act now to end human trafficking amidst COVID-19 in Ghana,” Mr Monney asked journalists, as part of their mandate to name and shame perpetrators of crime in the society, should do same to help eradicate this menace that has engulfed the country.

The GJA president also called on the media to equally educate people on the  subject so they know that human trafficking is not only a criminal act but also drags the country backward.
