My performance at West Ham was affected by 2023 AFCON disappointment – Kudus

Mohammed Kudus has admitted to facing difficulties in finding his form at West Ham United following an early exit with the Black Stars at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Despite overcoming injury to participate in Ghana’s final two matches after missing the opening game, Kudus only managed to score twice in the tournament. Unfortunately, the Chris Hughton-led side was unable to progress beyond the group stage.

Upon his return from the AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire, it took the 23-year-old five games to contribute to a goal. Kudus attributed this challenge to the nature of his exit from the continental tournament.

“As human beings, we need some time to shake stuff off,” the Ghanaian said, speaking in an interview with The Guardian. “I was injured before Afcon and had to put all my effort into being there to help the team. It was my first Afcon and it didn’t go as planned.

“When you go back straight into playing nobody ever gives you time to change gear. It had an impact because it was a big disappointment.”

Kudus has amassed 11 goals and 4 assists in 34 appearances for the Hammers across all competitions this season. He will be aiming to add to his tally when West Ham faces Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday.

AFCON 2023: ‘Finally’ Sports Minister blasts Black Stars for unacceptable display

Ghana’s Minister of Sports, Mustapha Ussif, has voiced his discontent over the recent underwhelming performances of the Black Stars in major football competitions.

The four-time Africa Champions have failed to impress in the past three tournaments, facing elimination during the group stages. These tournaments include two AFCONs and a FIFA World Cup.

Prior to their disappointing outing at AFCON 2023, the Black Stars were prematurely ousted from the group stage at AFCON 2021 and the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

In an address to Parliament, Mustapha Ussif underscored the unacceptable nature of the Black Stars’ performances in these tournaments, particularly given the substantial investments made by the government in the team.

“The Black Stars’ performance in the last three major tournaments, namely the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon, 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, and 2023 AFCON in Cote D’Ivoire, where Ghana exited at the group stages of all three tournaments, notwithstanding government’s continuous huge investment in the team, is not acceptable,” he stated.

At the 2023 AFCON tournament, where Ivory Coast emerged as winners, the Black Stars were eliminated in the group stage, finishing third in Group B with two points. They managed two draws and suffered one defeat.

AFCON 23 Finals: Moment woman collapsed on the pitch after Nigeria’s loss to Côte d’Ivoire

In a dramatic turn of events following Nigeria’s heartbreaking loss to Côte d’Ivoire in the 2023 AFCON finals, a harrowing scene unfolded on the pitch as a woman collapsed.

A video circulating on social media captured the distressing moment when the woman fell to the ground, seemingly overcome by emotion or perhaps a medical condition exacerbated by the intense match.

As she lay unconscious on the field, a team of health experts rushed to her aid, swiftly attending to her. With concern etched on their faces, they worked diligently to assess her condition and provide immediate medical assistance.

In a bid to aid her breathing and ensure proper ventilation, the woman was carefully fanned as part of the emergency response measures.

Ivory Coast made history by becoming the first host nation since Egypt in 2006 to clinch the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title, following their thrilling victory over Nigeria on Sunday night.

Sebastien Haller emerged as the hero once again for the Elephants, orchestrating a remarkable comeback to secure a 2-1 win.

This triumph marked a remarkable turnaround for the Ivorians, who overcame adversity, including the departure of coach Jean-Louis Gasset after two defeats in the group stage, to claim their third continental title. Building on their previous Nations Cup victories in 1992 and 2015, Ivory Coast cemented their status as champions and became the first host nation to lift the trophy since Egypt in 2006.

Ghanaians troll Nigeria after AFCON loss: No Light, no Grammys, no AFCON trophy, no president

In the aftermath of Nigeria’s defeat to Ivory Coast in the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) final, Ghanaians seized the opportunity for payback in the ongoing social media banter.

The Super Eagles, despite reaching the finals, were defeated 2-1 by the host nation, and Ghanaians wasted no time in taunting their Nigerian counterparts for their recent misfortunes.

Ghanaian social media users, including notable figures, flooded their pages with jabs aimed at Nigeria. The trolling encompassed various aspects, from mocking the well-known power blackout issues in Nigeria to referencing Nigeria’s loss to South Africa at the recent Grammys.

Some even directed their taunts at the Nigerian political establishment.

The Super Eagles, aiming for their fourth AFCON trophy, fell short in the final, allowing Ivory Coast to secure their third title. This victory places Ivory Coast on par with Nigeria on the top winners’ chart, led by Egypt.

For Ghanaians, this trolling session served as a form of retaliation after enduring weeks of mockery for their national team’s disappointing performance in the tournament.

Ghana exited the 2023 AFCON in the group stages, managing only a single point from three group matches.

The 2023 AFCON, held in Ivory Coast from January 10 to February 11, witnessed the host nation not only organizing the event but also emerging as the tournament’s champions.

Ivory Coast now joins the list of countries that have hosted and won the AFCON, following the footsteps of Egypt, Ghana, Nigeria, Algeria, and Tunisia.

William sees South Africa through to semis of 2023 AFCON

Ronwen Williams displayed exceptional goalkeeping prowess, making four crucial saves as South Africa emerged victorious against Cape Verde in a thrilling Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final, ultimately securing a spot in the semi-finals through a 2-1 penalty shootout win on Saturday.

The Bafana Bafana goalkeeper’s remarkable performance included a stunning save at the end of normal time, preserving a goalless draw and marking his fourth consecutive clean sheet in the tournament.

Despite Cape Verde creating more chances throughout the game, they were unable to capitalize, and South Africa, the 1996 champions, will now face Nigeria in the semi-finals.

The first half remained tight, with both goalkeepers having little to do. Cape Verde’s Kevin Pina and South Africa’s Teboho Mokoena had opportunities, but neither seriously tested the goalkeepers.

In the second half, Cape Verde’s Joao Paulo and Garry Rodrigues had chances, but Williams stood firm. Extra time saw South Africa dominating, but Vozinha’s superb saves kept Cape Verde in the game.

As penalties became inevitable, South Africa took the lead with Williams saving two spot-kicks. Despite a miss by Zakhele Lepasa, Williams continued to shine by saving crucial penalties, securing South Africa’s place in the semi-finals.

In a video message, the Le Havre player expressed regret for the team’s early exit from the tournament, stating, “These past days have been very difficult for every Ghanaian football fan and myself.

I would like to apologize for the results at the AFCON that we just exited; we know that we should have done better.”

Taking full responsibility as the squad captain, Dede Ayew admitted that the team’s showing, marked by a winless campaign with a loss to Cape Verde and draws against Egypt and Mozambique, did not meet the nation’s expectations.

“In football, these are things that happen; it makes you stronger. What doesn’t kill you always makes you a stronger person, individually and collectively. We are Ghana and never going to give up… we shall rise and shine again as a family,” he emphasized.

Dede Ayew, who made an appearance in the final group game against Mozambique, acknowledged setbacks as a norm in football but emphasized that they should serve as a stepping stone to better performances in the future.

He concluded his apology by addressing the sentiments of disappointed fans, stating, “We understand the anger, backlash, everything that came to us; we take it, and we will make sure that we put our flag back where it belongs.”

The national team’s failure to progress beyond the group stage led to widespread disappointment among fans, prompting key squad members, including Dede Ayew, to publicly express remorse and commitment to a stronger comeback.

DR Congo progresses to knockout stages as Tanzania exit 2023 AFCON

In a 0-0 draw between DR Congo and Tanzania in Korhogo, DR Congo secured their place in the knockout stages of the Africa Cup of Nations, while Tanzania was eliminated from the tournament.

The second half featured attempts from Brentford’s Yoane Wissa, with one shot denied by Tanzania goalkeeper Aishi Manula, and another sent over the goal. Despite these efforts, DR Congo drew their third consecutive game in Group F.

Sebastien Desabre’s team finished second in the group, behind Morocco, and is set to face Egypt in the last 16 on Sunday. Tanzania’s challenging campaign, marked by the suspension of head coach Adel Amrouche and the appointment of assistant Hemed Suleiman as acting boss, concludes with them finishing at the bottom of the group with two points.

The match itself saw early attempts, with former Chelsea player Gael Kakuta testing Manula with a free-kick and Tanzania captain Mbwana Samatta firing a shot off target in the first 15 minutes. Manula made crucial saves, including blocking a Fiston Mayele attempt with his legs in the 30th minute.

In the second half, DR Congo continued to press for a breakthrough, with substitute Meschak Elia missing a chance in the 73rd minute. Wissa’s attempt to lob the ball over Manula was also thwarted by the goalkeeper.

The Leopards persisted in their late push, with Cedric Bakambu heading too high and another Wissa shot narrowly missing the target before the final whistle confirmed DR Congo’s progression with another draw.

  • AFCON 2023: Hakim Ziyech sees Morocco into the last 16

AFCON 2023: Hakim Ziyech sees Morocco into the last 16

Hakim Ziyech propelled Morocco into the last 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations as Group F winners with a 1-0 triumph over Zambia.

The Chelsea midfielder, presently on loan at Turkish club Galatasaray, secured victory at Stade Laurent Pokou in San Pedro with a decisive goal seven minutes before halftime.

Ziyech’s well-executed finish proved to be the decisive moment, earning Morocco the three points they needed to top the group. DR Congo secured the runners-up position after a goalless draw with Tanzania, signaling the end of Zambia’s involvement in the tournament.

Despite a competitive start to the match, with attempts from Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi and Zambia’s Patson Daka narrowly missing the mark, clear opportunities were scarce in the first half. Sofiane Boufal and Azzedine Ounahi also failed to find the target as both teams sought to assert themselves in an evenly contested game.

In the 30th minute, Kennedy Musonda tested Morocco’s goalkeeper Yassine Bounou with a long-range strike, but defender Frankie Musonda crucially intervened seconds later to deny Ismael Saibari from reaching skipper Ziyech’s cross in front of the goal.

Zambia had a close call 10 minutes before halftime when defender Nayef Aguerd headed wide from Ziyech’s cross. However, Morocco’s 30-year-old skipper found the back of the net within three minutes after Zambia’s keeper Lawrence Mulenga spilled a low cross.

Mulenga managed to parry Ayoub El Kaabi’s header, preventing Morocco from extending their lead, and the teams headed into halftime with Morocco holding a narrow one-goal advantage.

After the break, half-time substitute Amine Adli created two goal-scoring opportunities, but Zambia’s defense held firm. Lameck Banda came close to equalizing with a chance in the 59th minute.

As Morocco tired, Zambia intensified their efforts, with Lubambo Musonda shooting just too high and Emmanuel Banda forcing a save. Substitute Fashion Sakala caused problems for Morocco, but despite their efforts, Zambia couldn’t find a way back into the game, and Morocco secured a 1-0 victory.

  • AFCON 2023: Ghana can still make round of 16, but the math is convoluted

AFCON 2023: Ghana can still make round of 16, but the math is convoluted

Ghana drew 2-2 with Mozambique in their last Group B game, which has left the team on the brink of exiting the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament at the group stage.

The Black Stars appeared to be cruising for the majority of the game, until the 91st minute, when substitute Andre Ayew conceded a penalty for the Mambas to pull one back, before they scored the equaliser four minutes later from a corner, which was conceded when Richard Ofori inexplicably touched the ball, which appeared to be heading out.

The result has left Ghana 3rd in Group B with only 2 points from their three games played so far, having lost 2-1 to Cape Verde in their first game and drawn 2-2 in their second against Egypt .

And the Black Stars are certainly down at the moment, but not completely out, at least not technically anyway, even if they harbour only the slimmest of chances to qualify.

Four 3rd place teams will qualify for the round of 16 at this competition, and with host nation Côte d’Ivoire finishing 3rd with 3 points and Namibia currently ranked 3rd in their group with 3 points, both teams are already ahead of the Black Stars in the pecking order of 4th place teams to qualify.

That leaves only two routes through which the Black Stars can qualify.

Those two places are currently contested by Algeria (2 points), Zambia (2 points), Ghana (2 points) and Cameroon (1 point). The other three teams all still have a game left, with Ghana having played all their games.

So in order for Ghana to qualify, Zambia must lose to Morocco, Algeria must also lose to Tanzania, and Cameroon must not beat The Gambia.

If that happens, Zambia will remain on 2 points, Algeria will also remain on 2 points, and Cameroon will also get up to 2 points with a draw.

It will then get down to Goal Difference. The Black Stars currently have a GD of -1, and Zambia and Algeria have a GD of 0, while Cameroon have a GD of -2.

So one of Algeria and Zambia must lose by at least a 2-goal margin to swing the GD in favour of the Black Stars, with all the others also losing, of course, before Ghana can sneak through.

Yes, I know the math is convoluted and confusing, and you have probably given up already.

But it is still my duty to inform you that the chance exists, even if it’s 0.0001 at this point.

In the video, several mattresses were laid out on a well-tiled floor, and various items like clothes and water bottles scattered around the room.

AFCON 2023: Black Stars giving poor display purposely to push coach’s sacking – Kofi Akpaloo

Presidential candidate for the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), Kofi Akpaloo, has made bold allegations, accusing the current Black Stars players participating in the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) of conspiring to push out coach Chris Hughton.

Akpaloo’s claims follow the national team’s lacklustre performance in their opening match against Cape Verde, resulting in a 2-1 defeat.

Expressing his dissatisfaction with the team’s dedication and display, Akpaloo suggested that the overseas-based players in the squad are intentionally working to subvert and oust Coach Hughton from his position.

In a strongly-worded statement, Akpaloo expressed his desire for a complete overhaul of the Black Stars, advocating for the inclusion of more locally-based players.

“It is my wish that we sack all the current Black Stars players and allow the local ones to play. We have overpampered these players, and as a result, they are not committed. Their deliberate attempt to get the coach sacked or sabotage him will not work,” declared Akpaloo.

The accusations surface amidst heightened scrutiny and criticism of the players following their disappointing start to AFCON 2023.

The Black Stars are gearing up for their crucial upcoming match against Egypt on Thursday, with the aim of recovering from their initial setback. As criticism of the team continues to grow, especially after their defeat to Cape Verde, the upcoming match provides an opportunity for redemption.

Kofi Akpaloo, leading the LPG into the 2024 general elections, expresses concerns not only about football matters but is also determined to break the political dominance of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Cameroon faced a frustrating 1-1 draw against resilient 10-man Guinea in their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) opener in Yamoussoukro.

Guinea took a surprise lead through Mohamed Bayo, but their captain Francois Kamano was sent off in the first half.

Cameroon’s Frank Magri equalized early in the second half, but they couldn’t find a winner against Guinea’s well-organized defense.

AFCON 2023: Andre Onana addresses public after Cameroon – Guinea game miss

The exclusion of Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana became a focal point in the lead-up to Cameroon’s opening match against Guinea in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Despite Onana’s recent appearance for Manchester United in a 2-2 draw against Tottenham Hotspur, he arrived in Ivory Coast the following day for Cameroon’s tournament opener. To the surprise of fans, he was not included in the matchday squad for the game against Guinea, which led to discussions among supporters.

Following the underwhelming 1-1 draw against 10-man Guinea, a journalist approached Onana to gather his thoughts on the situation, and the former Ajax goalkeeper had much to share.

“I have a lot of things to say but I won’t say it here because we are in competition. The most important thing is sacred union. We are here to win #AFCON2023. I ask the supporters to support us in good times and bad […] I am one of the leaders, so I take my responsibilities and that is why I am here,” via Allez Les Lions.

The 27-year-old dismissed the criticism that has come his way in the last few months.

“I don’t want people to criticise the youngest. Let people continue to criticise me; I’m used to it, I do what is good for my country. It’s like choosing between my father and my mother, but my country comes first; that’s why I’m here. We’re together.”

It’s uncertain whether Andre Onana will be chosen as the starting goalkeeper for Cameroon in their significant match against defending champions Senegal on Friday, January 19.

Despite having a one-man advantage throughout the entire second half against 10-man Guinea, Cameroon couldn’t capitalize on their opportunities, failing to secure a victory, according to CAF.

During Cameroon’s match at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium, Onana was observed in a deep conversation with El Hadji Diouf, a two-time African Footballer of the Year, as previously reported by Sports Brief. While the specific topic of their discussion remains unknown, the Senegalese legend was seen exchanging words with Onana.

Onana has encountered challenges since joining Manchester United, and his relationship with Cameroon football authorities is uncertain, notably after reversing his decision to retire following the 2022 World Cup incident. The recent interaction with Diouf adds an element of intrigue to Onana’s situation, leaving fans curious about the nature of their discussion.

Angola frustrate Algeria, end 2023 AFCON opener in stalemate

Algeria faced disappointment in their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) opener as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Angola in Bouake.

Despite taking the lead through Baghdad Bounedjah, Angola managed to secure a point with a second-half equalizer from Mabululu. The Angolan striker converted the rebound after his penalty struck the bar in the Group D clash.

Algeria, aiming to avoid a repeat of their 2022 performance when they exited in the group stages as defending champions, started positively with Bounedjah’s clinical finish after 18 minutes. Although Bounedjah scored a spectacular overhead kick shortly afterward, the goal was disallowed for offside following a VAR review.

The Algerians struggled to create further chances, and Angola, coming into the match with four consecutive goalless draws, drew level in the 65th minute. Mabululu was brought down in the box by Nabil Bentaleb and scored on the rebound after his initial penalty hit the bar.

Despite a late surge of pressure from Algeria, including Riyad Mahrez’s threat from set-plays, Angola, ranked 117th, held on for a point. The result continued Algeria’s recent struggles in the Africa Cup of Nations.

  • There is no real plan as to what Ghana has been doing with Black Stars – Jerome Otchere

There is no real plan as to what Ghana has been doing with Black Stars – Jerome Otchere

A former Editor of Kotoko Express, Jerome Otchere, has attributed the underwhelming performance of the senior national football team to fundamental flaws in its management.

During an appearance on JoyNews’ PM Express, Mr. Otchere placed the blame squarely on stakeholders, particularly the Sports Ministry, asserting that Ghana has not established a clear and comprehensive vision for the Black Stars.

He emphasized that the absence of a well-defined plan has been a significant factor contributing to the team’s recent struggles on the continental stage.

Mr. Otchere’s comments followed Ghana’s defeat in its first match of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) against Cape Verde on Sunday.

He emphasized that the traditional approach of allocating funds only when the team qualifies for a tournament is insufficient.

“I do not think that as a country we have clearly identified what we want to do with our senior national team. All that we’ve been doing is when it’s time for a tournament and we’re lucky to qualify, money is made available for them to travel and that is all.

“There is no real plan as to what Ghana has been doing with the Black Stars,” he told host Evans Mensah on Monday.

Mr. Otchere contended that relying on a reactive strategy does not effectively address the root issues affecting the performance of the Black Stars. He called for a shift towards a more proactive and sustained effort from the authorities to address the challenges facing the national football team.

Additionally, he questioned the absence of a comprehensive plan for the Black Stars and urged stakeholders to prioritize the identification and pursuit of specific goals. Mr. Otchere emphasized the importance of having a well-defined roadmap to guide the development and success of the team on both the national and continental stages.

“Where [do] we want to take it [Black Stars] and if you’re talking about player quality, how are you nurturing players?” he stated.

AFCON 2023: I’m only supporting Black Stars because I am a Ghanaian, we are not expecting anything big – ‘Hopeless’ fanatic

A Ghanaian football fanatic has indicated that he is not clinging to the hopes of Ghana making any significant display in the ongoing 2023 AFCON tournament.

According to him, he now supports the senior national team because he is a Ghanaian and it is patriotic to do so.

His hopes for the Black Stars have dwindled due to their lack of impressive performances at subsequent tournaments.

“I started watching Cup of Nations from the year 2000. In 2000, Ghana and Nigeria hosted it and at quarter finals stage, we were knocked out. 2002, I think we were in Mali. We were knocked out. In 2004, we couldn’t qualify. 2006, we were in Egypt, we couldn’t even make it out of group stages.

In 2008, we were in Ghana. We were third. In 2010, Angloa, finals, we couldn’t take it. I think in 2012, we were knocked out by Zambia.

In 2013, we were in South Africa. We couldn’t do anything. In 2015, we went to the finals beaten by La Cote Divoire on penalty. In 2017, Equatorial Guinea, we couldn’t do anything. 2019, nothing.

2021, we wouldn’t make it out of the group stages, and we are here. So I am not expecting anything big from our team.. We can only pray and hope that the players will do well,” he said.

He further bemoans the absence of “big players” such as John Paintsil, John Mensah, Issah Ahmed, Michael Essien, Stephen Appiah, Sulley Muntari, Laryea Kingston.”

He also criticised Mohammed Kudus for showing up with staff of West Ham. According to him, Kudus has decided to pick West Ham.

“Kudus Mohammed is our star player but he prefers to play for West Ham than Ghana. He came just three days ago and what pains me is that when he was coming with staff of West Ham. Really, for what reason? Look at him; he is on the bench. So our team, I’m supporting them because I’m a Ghanaian. We are not expecting anything. If we are able to make it, halleluyah.”

Nonetheless, he notes that he will jubilate should the team surprise him and advance to significant stages of the competition.

Ghana make first disappointing start in AFCON 2023 tournament

In the opening match of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Cape Verde secured a dramatic victory over Ghana with a late goal by substitute Gary Rodrigues.

The match, initially balanced, took an unexpected turn as Jameiro Monteiro capitalized on a rebound after 17 minutes, putting Cape Verde in the lead with a 1-0 advantage.

Despite the early setback, Ghana pressed forward, and Majeed Ashimeru thought he had equalized with a brilliant strike, only for the goal to be disallowed for offside, as Ransford-Yeboah was deemed to have interfered with the goalkeeper’s line of sight.

Gary Rodrigues makes Cape Verde shine

Trailing at halftime, Ghana made a strong comeback in the second half, with Fenerbahce’s central defender Djiku leveling the score from a Jordan Ayew corner. Djiku’s heroics continued with two crucial goal-saving clearances that kept the Black Stars in the game.

However, Cape Verde capitalized on a moment of defensive lapses from Ghana, as Gary Rodrigues scored in added time to seal a 2-1 victory for the Blue Sharks. Despite goalkeeper Richard Ofori’s efforts in the final 10 minutes, Ghana couldn’t overturn the deficit.

The defeat leaves Ghana with a challenging task ahead, as they now look to bounce back against Egypt in their next match on January 18.

Kudus reported to miss AFCON 2023 due to a hamstring injury

Mohammed Kudus may be facing a more severe hamstring injury than initially thought, raising doubts about his availability for Ghana’s opening AFCON game against Cape Verde on Sunday.

The 23-year-old reported hamstring tightness after West Ham’s victory over Arsenal, prompting an assessment by the club and communication of the injury to the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

Although expected to rejoin the team last week, Kudus’ return has been delayed, requiring an additional 5-6 days for full fitness. Currently in Ghana, he is working intensively with physiotherapists to expedite his recovery before the team’s departure to Ivory Coast on Wednesday.

The decision to include Kudus in the initial match against Cape Verde remains uncertain due to his compromised fitness resulting from missed training sessions and the Namibia friendly.

Despite earlier indications of his possible return today, recent developments suggest a longer-than-expected period of sidelining.

Having missed the 2021 AFCON due to a rib fracture, Kudus is determined to make his debut in the competition for the Black Stars. Notably, his time at Ajax included a hamstring injury in April 2023, sidelining him for four games.

Ghana finds themselves in Group B, alongside Mohammed Kudus may, Cape Verde, and Mozambique.

With good support and preparation, Black Stars will give a good show at AFCON 2023 – Odartey Lamptey

Former Ghanaian football star, Nii Odartey Lamptey, has expressed his hopes and prayers for the success of the Black Stars at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Mr Lamptey, a member of the 1991 FIFA U17 World Cup-winning team, acknowledged the quality of the Black Stars.

Ghana is placed in Group B of the 2023 AFCON, alongside Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique. Lamptey shared his optimism for the team’s success during an interview with Sienu TV, expressing confidence in the Black Stars’ abilities in the upcoming tournament.

“Nothing has changed about the Black Stars that is why I want us to give Chris Hughton the benefit of the doubt that yes, with few weeks to the AFCON, things can change”

“Without a doubt, if you look at the players he’s being inviting for our games, you could see there is nothing wrong with it and that is what we also have”

“I’m sure with support, these boys should be able to do well for Ghana. Who can tell me Kudus is not a good player, Partey, and Jordan. So I’m sure with good support and good preparation, we will cause a surprise. I pray the team succeed in Ivory Coast.”

The Black Stars have a storied history of success in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), having won the title four times, with the most recent triumph in 1982. However, since then, they have faced setbacks in three finals, including losses to Ivory Coast in 1992 on penalties, Egypt in 2010, and a repeat defeat to Ivory Coast in 2015.

The upcoming AFCON tournament is scheduled to commence on Saturday, January 13, and will run through February 11, 2024. The team, led by head coach Otto Addo, aims to clinch the coveted trophy and add to Ghana’s rich football legacy on the continental stage.

If we need to sack Houghton to win 2023 AFCON, so be it – Annoh Dompreh

Majority Chief Whip in Parliament, Frank Annoh Dompreh, has suggested that Black Stars head coach Chris Hughton should be fired if necessary for Ghana to secure victory in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Hughton, the former Brighton manager, has faced criticism since taking over in March, with the team’s performance and results falling short of expectations.

Speaking in parliament, the Nsawam-Adoagyiri MP urged the Sports Minister to take all necessary measures to prevent the Black Stars from bringing shame to the country during the upcoming tournament in Cote d’Ivoire.

“Minister, you’ll agree with me that these days our Black Stars is becoming a pale shadow of itself,” Dompreh said.

“As we are heading towards another African tournament, we urge you to do everything and anything, including the changing of our national coach, if need be.

“We can’t just go there and be part of the number of teams. We’ve always said that we are four-time champions; this thing is becoming old-time glory.

“We want to do something for ourselves, and minister, I know you can do it. Please help, and let’s get our Black Stars in good shape.”

Black Stars head coach Chris Hughton has unveiled a 55-man provisional squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) released the list on December 20, just 24 days before the tournament kicks off.

FIFA Ranking: Ghana drops to 60th place despite Angola victory

The Black Stars of Ghana have fallen to 60th on the most recent FIFA Ranking despite defeating Angola 1-0 on March 23, 2023.

In the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, the team started the year off on a victorious note with a late 1-0 triumph over Angola.

The Black Stars pulled off a spirited 1-1 draw with Angola in Luanda four days after their dramatic victory at the Baba Yara Stadium.

The team moved backwards in the FIFA rankings, therefore the win and draw had minimal effect on their position.

In Africa, Ghana maintained its 11th position while Morocco continue as the number one footballing nation on the continent.

Ghana poised to qualify for AFCON 2023, but Angola will be a stern test

On March 27, 2023, Angola and Ghana will play a challenging match as both teams try to advance to the Africa Cup of Nations competition.

At the Baba Yara Stadium, the Black Stars narrowly defeated the Palancas Negras to move one step closer to AFCON qualification.

With a close victory over Angola on Thursday, Ghana opened its 2023 account after waiting too long to do so. The Black Stars had not triumphed since losing to Uruguay in the 2022 World Cup final in December.

Under new coach Chris Hughton, the Black Stars were able to resume winning ways thanks to Antoine Semenyo’s dramatic goal.

Ghana sit top of Group E with seven points after three games, three points clear off second-place Angola while Central African Republic sit third with four points.

The Black Stars will secure qualification to the continental showpiece to be hosted by Ivory Coast if they beat Angola in Luanda.

But the four-time African Champions faces a daunting task against Angola and will have to play above themselves if they are to secure early qualification at away.

Meanwhile, Ghana will miss the services of captain Andre Ayew, Mohammed Salisu, Alexander Djiku and Denis Odoi due to injuries.

  • NSA to reward fans who purchase ticket ahead of Ghana vs Angola game

NSA to reward fans who purchase ticket ahead of Ghana vs Angola game

The National Sports Authority’s Director General, Prof. Peter Twumasi, has stated that supporters will receive rewards for buying tickets ahead of the Black Stars‘ match against Angola later this month.

Ahead of the game, NSA has introduced what it calls ‘Early Bird Buyers’ in Ghana’s game against Angola in Kumasi to reduce the pressure on networks and demand for online tickets on the matchday.

“We are introducing some reforms such that, the people can really have advanced ticket purchasing and that’s something that had not been done,” Prof Twumasi told Kumasi-based LUV FM.

“Probably we need to motivate those who want to buy the tickets far in advance. Now, we are bringing out variations in pricing so people who will buy the tickets before the match will have discounts, very huge.”

“So those who will be buying the tickets before the matchday will have a huge discount and then on the match day, the price will go up a little bit. So we are encouraging more people to take advantage of this and buy their tickets before the game. The problem comes when they are there buying and we are also using the system for scanning so we want to reduce that,’’ he said.

The third matchday of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations [AFCON] qualifications will include matches between Ghana and Angola at the Baba Yara Stadium on March 23.

The NSA also introduced the electronic ticketing system. Initial difficulties existed, but they have been resolved.

Following a 3-0 victory over Madagascar and a 1-1 draw with the Central African Republic in June of last year, Ghana and Angola are tied for first place in Group E with 4 points each.

In four days in Luanda, the Black Stars will honor the reverse match.

Thomas Partey was selected for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations team by Ghana, which will consist of 25 players.

The Black Stars are tied at the top of Group E with Angola on four points each.

Ghana began their campaign with a 3-0 win over Madagascar before being held to a one-all draw against Central African Republic.
