Akufo-Addo now indifferent to Ghanaians wrath – Amaliba

Director of Conflict Resolution and former Director of Legal Affairs for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Abraham Amaliba, expressed his concern over the Akufo-led NPP government’s apparent lack of fear regarding public opinion.

He was particularly dismayed by revelations made at the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) sitting on Thursday, May 9, regarding the payment of US$11 million to a contractor for the Pwalugu multipurpose dam project, despite no visible progress at the site.

Amaliba described the site as “a grassland” with no work done.

The Pwalugu project, a flagship initiative of the current government, includes components for power generation, irrigation, and flood control.

Speaking on The Big Issue on TV3 on Friday, the private legal practitioner and NDC communicator stressed that Ghanaians should be more vocal in expressing their dissatisfaction with the Akufo-Addo government.

“Yesterday, listening to the public accounts committee, I cringed when I heard 11 million dollars was paid to a contractor for the completion of the Pwaulu Multipurpose Dam.

Yet when you go to that place, it is grassland. And you wonder why criminals who have taken over the reins of government would do this to mother Ghana.

“Aren’t you angry? You have a situation where money is paid to a contractor and you get to the site, there is nothing there, and you say I shouldn’t describe them as thieves,” he said.

“I am of the view that, as a country, we have not lived up to expectations as a people. When a government gets to a point where it doesn’t fear the wrath of the people, this is what happens.

Governments must always be afraid of the people…but you get to a point where the government does not fear the wrath of the people, you have these things happening.”

He added, “You give 11 million dollars out as the final payment and yet there is not a single block laid at the place.”

Construction activities began in November 2019 after President Akufo-Addo ceremonially initiated the project. Subsequently, Parliament approved the project on February 26, 2020.

Financed by the Government of Ghana, the project is expected to be completed within approximately fifty (50) months.

Akufo-led NPP gov’t is not afraid of the wrath of Ghanaians – Amaliba

Director of Conflict Resolution and former Director of Legal Affairs for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Abraham Amaliba, has strongly criticized the Akufo-Addo-led NPP government, stating that they are not concerned about public backlash.

This comes after revelations during a Public Accounts Committee (PAC) meeting on Thursday, May 9, that the government paid a contractor US$11 million for the Pwalugu multipurpose dam project, despite no visible progress at the site, which he described as “a grassland.”

The Pwalugu project, a major initiative of the current government, encompasses power generation, irrigation, and flood control components.

Speaking on TV3’s The Big Issue, Amaliba emphasized that Ghanaians should be more outraged by such misuse of funds.

He questioned why the government would pay such a substantial amount without any tangible work being done, labeling those in charge as “thieves” and expressing disappointment in the lack of public response.

Amaliba highlighted the need for governments to fear the repercussions of their actions, noting that when they no longer fear public backlash, situations like the Pwalugu dam scandal occur.

That you have a situation where money is paid to a contractor and you get to the site, there is nothing there, and you say I shouldn’t describe them as thieves,” he said.

He pointed out that despite President Akufo-Addo’s ceremonial commencement of construction activities in 2019 and parliamentary approval in 2020, there has been little progress on the project funded by the Government of Ghana.

“I am of the view that as a country, we have not lived up to expectations as a people. When a government gets to a point where it doesn’t fear the wrath of the people, this is what happens. Governments must always be afraid of the people…but you get to a point where the government does not fear the wrath of the people, you have these things happening.

“You give 11 million dollars out as the final payment and yet there is not a single block laid at the place.”

  • Akufo-Addo needs prayers, his remarks to Ekumfi constituents was horrible – Abraham Amaliba

Akufo-Addo needs prayers, his remarks to Ekumfi constituents was horrible – Abraham Amaliba

The Director of Conflict Resolution for the National Democratic Congress(NDC), Abraham Amaliba, has expressed criticism towards President Akufo-Addo for his remarks to the traditional leaders of Ekumfi.

In a meeting at the Jubilee House, President Akufo-Addo indicated that he had not prioritized the development needs of Ekumfi because the constituents voted out the then NPP candidate, Francis Ato Cudjoe, in the 2020 elections.

“Ato Cudjoe was your MP and I made him a Deputy Minister and you voted him out in the last elections and because of that, I did not pay attention to development  in your area, I have to be honest with you but since you have brought it up I will pay attention to it,” the President stated.

Reacting to the President’s comments, Amaliba stated that rather than condemnation, President Akufo-Addo needs prayers. He emphasized that the President’s tendency to make controversial statements requires understanding and prayers for his leadership.

Mr Amaliba mentioned the President’s previous statements in Mepe and emphasized the need for prayers, stating, “This President is incurable when it comes to running his mouth.”

Mr Amaliba argued that President Akufo-Addo may have breached his oath of office by neglecting the development of Ekumfi based on political considerations.

He questioned whether the people of Ekumfi believe the President has acted in accordance with his responsibilities outlined in the directive principles of state policy.

On the other hand, Eric Amoah Twum, a New Patriotic Party Communicator, defended the President’s comments, claiming they were taken out of context.

Mr Twum emphasized that the President’s demeanor during the meeting reflected genuine concern for Ekumfi’s development, and the comments should not be viewed as negative punishment for political reasons.

“The president does not need criticisms again like we are doing. The President deserves prayers; we must pray for this president. When he did in Mepe, he was bashed. Would a normal human being having being bashed that way repeat what he had said again?” Mr. Amaliba said in an interview on New Day, Friday, January 19.

“This President is incurable when it comes to running his mouth,” he added.

According to Abraham Amaliba, the President breached his oath of office for passing such a comment to the people of Ekumfi.

“Would the people of Ekumfi say he has done right to them. Has he not breached his oath? The directive principle of state policy stipulates that the President must ensure even and balanced development, has he not breached this one too?”

Twum urged against relying too heavily on propaganda and emphasized the President’s active engagement in conversations with the Ekumfi leaders as a sign of his commitment to their development.

  • Akufo-Addo’s problem is poor upbringing – Amaliba

Akufo-Addo’s problem is poor upbringing – Amaliba

The political climate in Ghana has reached new levels of tension following recent controversial remarks by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Abraham Amaliba, a member of the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) Resolutions Committee, attributed the President’s contentious statements during a visit to flood-stricken areas in the Volta Region to his “poor upbringing.”

The President’s comments came amidst a tour of communities devastated by the spillage from the Akosombo and Kpong Dams.

In a move that shocked many, he pointed out that if his concern were solely based on electoral support from the affected areas, he wouldn’t have visited to sympathise with the victims.

“I came here because Ghanaians are having difficulties and are suffering, and it is my responsibility to try and help. Because if it is a question of counting who votes for me and who doesn’t vote for me, then I wouldn’t be here because you don’t vote for me,” he said.

This remark, seen by critics as insensitive, especially given the timing, has drawn a significant backlash.

Speaking on TV3 NewDay on Friday, October 20, 2023, Amaliba, also a legal practitioner, expressed profound disappointment in the President’s conduct. He emphasised that the incident revealed more about President Akufo-Addo’s character than his leadership skills.

He criticised the President for using resources funded by the populace for such visits, only to insult the victims of the tragic incident.

“People are distressed. You take the people’s car, because the car that the president drove to that place was bought by the people. You take the people’s money, fuel that car, go to the Volta Region, and insult them in this way. The whole country is up in arms against you; what you could do is to apologise to the people of the Volta Region,” Amaliba detailed, not hiding his disdain.

He further lambasted the President, asserting, “He has failed and I have heard all sorts of complaints about the president. The president’s problem is none of those things people have said about him; the president’s problem is poor upbringing, which will then culminate into all of the things that he is doing. The presidency doesn’t change you – when you become president, that office doesn’t change you; it rather exposes your character.”

The affected areas, including North Tongu, South Tongu, Asuogyaman, Ada East, Keta, and other coastal communities in the Volta Region, have seen considerable havoc due to the dam spillages, with properties destroyed and lives disrupted. Despite the magnitude of the disaster, calls to declare the situation a national emergency have fallen on deaf governmental ears.

Amaliba’s words resonate with a section of the public and political commentators who view the President’s remarks as a misstep, further widening the chasm between the government and the citizens.

  • Amaliba criticizes bar conference describing it as political gathering for NPP

Amaliba criticizes bar conference describing it as political gathering for NPP

Former National Democratic Congress (NDC) legal affairs chief Abraham Amaliba has asked the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) to review its non-political status.

According to Amaliba, the GBA has increasingly demonstrated political partisanship over the past few years, favoring the current government and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Based on president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s use of the 2023 edition of the conference to rip into former president Mahama’s remarks on the judiciary, he characterized the annual Bar Conference as a political jamboree.

Speaking on Joy fm, he said “The bar conference has become a political jamboree for the NPP-inclined lawyers and state officials including the president to attack NDC-inclined lawyers and its leadership. The NDC-inclined lawyers pay dues to the Ghana Bar Association.

“The Bar uses the dues to organize the Bar Conference which is a non-political platform…,” he stressed before adding that regrettably the Bar conference has been politicized and that; “the Bar should take the fall for this. The Bar has misconducted itself for far too long in these matters and I don’t want to be charitable at all.”

On Mahama’s critical comments on the judiciary labelling it as partisan and calling for what he called balancing out of members of the bench, Amaliba said; “Mahama used an NDC platform to make comments. Why would bar give Akufo-Addo platform to respond?” he complained.

During the same program as Amaliba, GBA spokesperson Saviour Kudze expressed the association’s condemnation of Akufo-Addo’s political remarks at the conference. However, he clarified that they couldn’t have anticipated the content of the president’s speech.

  • NDC lawyer questions who deserves a daily trial between Gyakye Quayson and NAM 1

NDC lawyer questions who deserves a daily trial between Gyakye Quayson and NAM 1

Head of Legal Affairs for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Abraham Amaliba, has reiterated the party’s opposition to the implementation of a daily trial mandate for their Member of Parliament representing Assin North.

An Accra High Court made the order last month in a criminal case the state has brough against the MP.

Amaliba holds that the order was discriminatory not just to the MP but also to his lawyers, because it means they will not deal with any other case except that of Quayson.

“Why, did the lawyers learn law solely because of Gyakye Quayson that they have to attend court every day?” he quizzed.

He maintained that the nature of Quayson’s crime as proffered by the state was no where close to that of Nana Appaih Mensah (NAM1) of Menzgold fame. Quayson’s case he stressed had not caused any loss of life or jobs as is the case with NAM1’s.

“Day by day trial, tell me, between NAM1 and Gyakye Quayson, who should be tried day by day? Obviously (NAM1) because lives and jobs have been lost. People can’t live their lives again.

“Tell me, who in Assin North has died out of Gyakye Quayson’s trial, so why should it be day by day?” he quizzed.

Gyakye Quayson is facing five counts of among others perjury and deceiving a public official in the filing processes to contest for the 2020 parliamentary elections at a time he was said to have held dual citizenship, that of Ghana and of Canada.

Nana Mensah is facing 61 counts of abetment of crime, defrauding by false pretences, carrying on deposit-taking business without license, sale of minerals without license, unlawful deposit-taking, and money laundering.

The accused person has denied the charges and the court on July 26, 2019, admitted him to bail in the sum of GHC1 billion with five sureties, three to be justified.

The court ordered him to be reporting to the Police every Wednesday pending the outcome of the case.

  • Voting for Bawumia will make our work easier – NDC to NPP

Voting for Bawumia will make our work easier – NDC to NPP

A private legal practitioner and member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) legal team, Abraham Amaliba, has advised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) members to select vice president, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s flagbearer.

Speaking to the media he said this will make the chances of the NDC capturing power in 2024 easier.

The comments by Amaliba were on the back of data released by Global InfoAnalytics that suggests that the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has a higher chance of becoming the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) with a 34.8% percentage.

To him, the Vice President is a damaged commodity who is no match for the NDC.

“I will not waste time, Dr Bawumia is already a damaged commodity. I know the establishments are interested in Dr Bawumia. Bring him in, vote for him and he will make our work very easy for us,” he said.

Lawyer Amaliba added that Ghanaians have records of how Vice President, Dr Bawumia, swayed his way to power with the NPP.

Thus, he lacks credibility to be the country’s President.

“After all, Ghanaians have his voices, all the things he said before he came to power. Ghanaians have his vox pop, they will sit in their rooms and play those things and listen to whether this is a credible person they will want to become the president,” he noted.

He continued to say that as a party, National Democratic Congress (NDC), they are not perturbed by who wins the flagbearership of the NPP, they are prepared to win the elections come 2024.

“We in the NDC do not care who they bring in. The last time I sat here, I said the horse is weak, so it doesn’t matter which rider you bring in. Once the horse is weak, it cannot run, the NPP is weak.

“Ghanaians want to see the back of this government and they want to do that very fast,” he continued.

  • EC must be punished for misleading Gyakye Quayson – Amaliba

Director of Legal Affairs of NDC, Abraham Amaliba, has stated that the Electoral Commission of Ghana must be sanctioned for misleading the deposed Assin North Member of Parliament, James Gyakye Quayson.

He said the EC had the responsibility of disqualifying the embattled MP if he did not meet the constitutional requirement to run in the elections, therefore, the EC must be sanctioned for not ensuring this.

He said the failure of the EC to disqualify him gave Gyakye Quayson the impression that all was fine leading to his election and swearing-in as Member of Parliament.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express, Mr. Amaliba questioned the Supreme Court’s decision not to punish the EC for their ‘complicity’.

“Now in this judgement of the Supreme Court what punishment have they given top the EC? How can you visit the sins of the EC on the Member of Parliament who openly gave out his documents for scrutiny. And I think your question is predicated on that, what does the Supreme Court say about the EC? And I think that is where the discussions are.

“And I think that clearly the EC would have misled him to do what he did. In the example he gave about the passport, when you get to the Kotoka international airport, no plane will pick you. The plane will not allow you to go and sit in the plane and travel, so why did the EC allow him? That’s the question you’re asking. And I think that that is where the miscarriage of justice comes in,” he said.

His comment comes on the back of the Supreme Court ordering Parliament to expunge James Gyakye Quayson’s name from its records as a Member of Parliament.

Presiding Judge Justice Jones Dotse on Wednesday, May 17, ruled that the Electoral Commission (EC) acted unconstitutionally in allowing him to contest the 2020 parliamentary elections without proof of him renouncing his Canadian Citizenship.

The court in a unanimous decision ruled that Mr. Quayson was not qualified at the time of filing his nomination forms.

It further held that the EC allowing him to contest when he had not shown evidence of renunciation of his citizenship of Canada is unconstitutional.

It further declared that his election was unconstitutional, null and void and of no effect.

His swearing-in was equally declared to be unconstitutional with Parliament ordered to expunge his name from its records.

While the NPP have welcomed the ruling, the NDC say they are baffled by it.

In a statement reacting to the ruling, the Minority stated that the laws of Ghana only prohibit people from performing their functions as members of parliament if they still have dual citizenship.

However, “It is important to place on record that as at the time of his election, Hon. James Gyakye Quayson was not a dual citizen, neither was he a dual citizen as at the time he took the oath of office as a Member of Parliament,” parts of the statement released on Wednesday, read.

The statement signed by Minority Leader Dr Cassiel Ato Forson added that as a result, they find it baffling that the Supreme Court would order the removal from parliament of Mr Quayson who they say was duly elected as MP.

  • NDC is united despite a few miscreants working to thwart the party’s efforts – Amaliba

NDC is united despite a few miscreants working to thwart the party’s efforts – Amaliba

The director of legal affairs of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Abraham Amaliba believes that there are some mischievous persons whose objective is to erode successes chalked so far by the party.

Mr Amaliba’s comment follows a second injunction that has been filed against the party’s upcoming primaries on Saturday, May 13. It is the second to hit the primaries, with the first filed by presidential aspirant Dr. Kwabena Duffour struck out by the high court after he withdrew his injunction application.

Reacting to the latest suit on Joy FM’s Midday News on Friday, Mr Amaliba said the party has not officially been served with the writ.

Describing it as mischief, the legal practitioner stressed that the NDC remains united ahead of its internal elections.

“I would want to think that there are people who are engaging in mischief. And that is what is at play but the party is united. If you want to measure the strength or unity of the party, talk to the grassroots. They are yearning for this election to come off.

“There are a few miscreants who want to, as it were, thwart the efforts of the party, but generally the party is united,” he said on Friday.

On Tuesday, a presidential flagbearer hopeful, Dr Kwabena Duffour filed an injunction application against the party following what he said were some discrepancies his team had identified in the party’s voters register to be used for the exercise.

Two days later, an Accra High Court struck out his injunction application after asking his lawyers to withdraw the case.

There was singing and dancing among some NDC supporters following that decision, however, their joys were short-lived as the party comes up against another injunction application.

Edgar Asamoah Boateng is seeking the High Court’s order to prevent the party’s presidential and parliamentary primaries from taking place.

He alleges that the lack of an adequate photo album of qualified voters has caused significant animosity and hostility within the party. Should the writ be officially served, Mr Amaliba said the legal team will take a decision.

  • Akufo-Addo not traveling in fancy private jet due to lack of funds – Amaliba

Akufo-Addo not traveling in fancy private jet due to lack of funds – Amaliba

According to Abraham Amaliba, head of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) legal team, President Akufo-Addo is no more traveling in fancy private jet due to lack of funds.

He alleged that the President was able to fly in luxurious private jet due to Covid funds made available by the World Bank to assist nations in managing the economic difficulties they were experiencing in the course of the pandemic.

According to the legal practitioner, the use of Covid funds to finance the President’s travels is one piece of evidence of the mismanagement of the funds by Ghana.

Mr Amaliba was speaking on TV3‘s New Day during a discussion on President Akufo-Addo’s reply in his sessional address to Parliament on Wednesday, March 8 to assertions that government has misused Covid funds.

According to the NDC representative on the show on Friday, March 10, the Covid funds were what the president “used to finance his lifestyle”.

Asked by host Berla Mundi if the decision by the President was not as a result of incessant calls, especially by the Ranking Member on the Foreign Affairs Committee of Parliament, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, for accountability, Mr Amaliba retorted: “Did we start crying today?”

For him, he believes government no longer has enough to continue to rent the “luxurious” private jets for the President’s international travels.

Mr Amaliba added that President Akufo-Addo should rather thank his stars that he is still the President of Ghana because other countries have chased out their leaders from office for the same “infractions”.

  • Frank Davies questions reliance of key expert witness in Jomoro election petition

The Chairman of the New Patriotic Party’s Legal Committee, Frank Davies, has criticised the reliance on Jomoro MP’s expert in foreign law, whose testimony was key to dismissing the election petition in the constituency.

Speaking on The Point of View, he felt the judge should not have been bound by the expert witness, who was an Ivorian lawyer, and insisted further that the “man wasn’t an expert.”

“If you are a trained lawyer in Côte d’Ivoire and you have practised for 15 years, that does not make you an expert in foreign law… 15 years of practice does not make you an expert in foreign law.”

“It is the Ivorian nationality code which is in contest so as to whether an expert has given evidence or not, we can not shy away from the judge’s legal determination because, at the end of the day, you the judge are the arbiter of facts and the law,” Mr. Davies argued further.

The Jomoro MP, Dorcas Affo-Toffey, who stood on a National Democratic Congress ticket, faced the election petition because she was accused of having Ivorian citizenship ahead of the 2020 polls.

The MP however argued that she renounced her citizenship before formally contesting.

The court agreed with her, saying she did not have Ivorian citizenship at the time she filed her nomination forms to contest as an MP.

In the judgement, the judge said the petitioner also did not demonstrate that the MP was not qualified to contest the 2020 parliamentary election and did not produce any evidence.

The NDC’s Director of Legal Affairs, Abraham Amaliba, downplayed the concerns raised by Mr. Davies.

He felt the expert witness presented was credible enough because of his legal qualifications.

“We brought somebody who is knowledgeable in Ivorian law, and any lawyer in any part of the world is knowledgeable in the laws of his country.”

“They didn’t bring somebody to counter and contradict what he said, and that is what won the day for us,” Mr. Amaliba said.

  • Don’t tarnish your image in defending accused illegal miners – Amaliba tells Blay

Director of Legal Affairs for the National Democratic Congress, Abraham Amaliba has advised the former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman, Freddie Blay to recuse himself from defending Chinese illegal miners in court.

The former Chairman is representing some Chinese nationals standing trial for their alleged involvement in illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey in the country.

Critics say Mr. Blay’s move defeats the government’s effort in fighting the menace which has left many water bodies and forest reserves destroyed.

Commenting on the issue on Starr Today with Joshua Kodjo Mensah, the NDC’s legal director indicated that Mr. Blay should not be seen as compounding issues for the government as it wages war against the galamsey menace.

“So for the sake of the people of this country who are also fighting the galamsey menace, let me not involve myself in the matter. Sometimes your conscience should tell you what you should do.

“What has even compounded the issue is that in this whole saga of galamsey, the government officials have been fingered to be engaging in it. That is a new dimension.

“Our fight against galamsey, we are now seeing that names of appointees have been mentioned. Then you (Freddie Blay) compound the problem for the government by defending those who have been mentioned as accomplices,” Mr. Amaliba stated.

He continued: “I think he is a senior lawyer, it is not always that you follow money. He will get his money alright but his image will be tarnished.

“I have done similar cases and where I feel that the people see my services will create the wrong impression I’ve given those cases to colleagues, who are not in the same situation that I find myself.”

The NDC legal director further added that Mr. Blay should hand over the case to any of his lawyers who are not connected to the NPP to handle it.

“Don’t forget Nkrabea Effah is also there as a lawyer and you are also there as lawyer and the government officials have been fingered as contributing to the menace,” he said.

  • You cant prosecute a dead man Amaliba tells OSP as he calls for parliamentary probe into Sir Johns will

Director of Legal Affairs of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Abraham Amaliba has called for a bipartisan parliamentary committee to look into the alleged improper acquisition of state lands by the late Former Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Commission, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie (Sir John).

He dissented on the decision of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to investigate this matter.

He explained that the intention of the OSP to investigate case of this kind is to prosecutor if prima farcie is established but in this particular case, Amaliba said, the person at the center of the controversy is dead hence, prosecution will not be possible.

“We need a bipartisan committee from parliament to deal with it.

“It should be opened to the public, let us invite people to testify, we will get to know how the forest was distributed to public servants apart from Sir John.

“If you want the OSP to do it he will just limit himself to the will and that will not address our our pain. Our pain is that a number of people have acquired state lands which is not just Sir John.”

“If you are conducting a criminal investigation your intention is to prosecute, how are you going to prosecute a dead man?” He quizzed while speaking on the Key Points on TV3 Saturday May 28 with host Dzifa Bampoh.

The OSP announced that it had started investigations into the alleged improper acquisition of state lands by Sir John.

A statement issued by the OSP on Thursday May 26 said “The Office of the Special Prosecutor has commenced full investigations into suspected corruption and corruption-related offences in respect of alleged improper and unlawful acquisition of state lands at the Achimota Forest enclave and Ramstar catchment at Sakumono in Accra by former Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Commission, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie alias Sir John (Now deceased) and other persons.”

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources also said it was investigating the supposed will that lists some individual relatives of Mr Owusu Afriyie to be given some portions of the Achimota Forest, which has become a topical issue the past days as a result of an Executive Instrument signed by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akuf-Addo to declassify portions.

“I give my portion of land that I jointly own at the Achimota Forest in the name of DML Limited to Elizabeth Asare Boateng who at the time of making this will is domiciled in the USA forever,” point g. of the will of the late public official, popularly known as Sir John, stated as captured on social media.

But the Ministry says it was probing this.

“The Ministry takes a very serious view of the allegations, and has requested for all documents relating to the lands in question, as part of an initial inquiry to ascertain the veracity of the claims,” a statement issued on Sunday, May 22 by the Ministry said.

“Considering that the issues that form the basis of the allegations predate the tenure of the current Minister, Hon. Samuel A. Jinapor, MP, it is important that he is seized with the full facts to enable him take appropriate action, if, indeed, there is any merit in the claims.

“The Ministry assures the general public and the good people of Ghana that it will ensure that the national interest is protected at all times, especially in matters pertaining to the Achimota Forest.”

  • Ghanaians are going through excruciating, bad economy Amaliba

A member of the legal team of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Abraham Amaliba, has said Ghanaians are going through severe economic difficulties due to the bad governance of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

He noted that the local currency is not doing well against the major trading ones especially the dollar, and also the prices of fuel are increasing leading to the high cost of goods and services.

“This economy we live in is an excruciating economy,” he said on the New Day show on TV3 Friday, February 18.

He added, “Fuel prices will continue to increase until the government finds ways to manage the cedi.”

For his part, Former Member of Parliament for OkaiKwei North, Fuseini Issah said the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has managed the performance of the cedi well.

He said on the same show that the worst performance of the cedi under the NPP administration is the best under the previous National Democratic Congress (NDC) regime.

The cedi currently trading at $6.5.

Mr. Issah Fuseni who also served on the Finance Committee of Parliament said “the worst performance of the currency under the NPP is worst under the NDC.”

“When in a year when the cedi depreciated by 18 percent under the NDC, that was bad leadership,” he stressed.

  • Assin North MPs case: Amaliba withdraws services as lawyer

The Head of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) legal team, Lawyer Abraham Amaliba has withdrawn his service as counsel for the Member of Parliament of Assin North, Joe Gyakye Quayson in the ongoing dual citizenship case.

He has accused Justice Kwasi Boakye, the trial judge of being bias, in a case in which Michael Ankomah Nimfah, a resident of the Assin North Constituency, is challenging the eligibility of Joe Gyakye Quayson as MP.

In the suit, Michael Ankomah Nimfah is alleging that the MP held dual citizenship at the time of filing his nomination to contest the 2020 Parliamentary elections and thus was not qualified.

Lawyer Amaliba failed to substantiate the accusation of bias when given the opportunity, thus his application was refused.

  • NDC will not present 12 lawyers in court for election petition – Amaliba

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has denied claims that it will assemble 12 lawyers as it prepares to petition the Supreme Court over their stance on the outcome of the polls.

A member of the legal team of the party lawyer Abraham Amaliba told Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM that the NDC will not assemble so many lawyers as circulated on social media.

The names of 12 persons that have come up as NDC legal brains are Lawyer Tsatsu Tsikata, Lawyer Nana Ato Dadzie, Lawyer Fui Tsikata, Lawyer Dominic Ayeni, Lawyer Tony Lithur and Lawyer Dr. Bassit Bamba.

Others were; Lawyer Samuel Cudjoe, Lawyer Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong, Lawyer Victor Kojoga Adawudu, Lawyer Edudzi Kudzo Tamakloe, Lawyer Abraham Amaliba, and Lawyer Dr. Rainer Akumperigya and Lawyer Sammy Gyamfi.

But Abraham Amaliba says the list is not an official one from the party.

According to him, the party will only present a few lawyers like it did in 2012.

He insisted the polls were rigged in favor of the incumbent and the NDC will emerge as winners after the case is presented.

He said their evidence is watertight and Ghanaians will appreciate their allegations that the polls were rigged.

Abraham Amaliba was hopeful the petition will expose the rigging schemes used by the EC to declare the incumbent NPP winners of the polls.

Meanwhile, he announced the NDC will seek live coverage of the polls like it was done in 2012.
