Free tertiary admission policy will require GHS345m – Haruna Iddrisu

The Education Minister-designate, Haruna Iddrisu, has disclosed that approximately GH₵345 million will be required to fully roll out the government’s free tuition initiative for first-year tertiary students.

During his appearance before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on January 20, 2025, the Tamale South MP emphasized that the initiative is designed to enhance access to higher education for students nationwide.

He indicated that the funds would be allocated to cover the tuition costs for newly enrolled students, ensuring that higher education is accessible to all.

Haruna Iddrisu also revealed that the funds will be distributed directly to the participating institutions.

Furthermore, he assured that students who have already made tuition payments will receive reimbursements, ensuring the initiative remains equitable for everyone.

“The country will require about ₵345 million for the population of students who enter tertiary institutions, that is what the state will be required to do. We intend to provide that money to the affected universities, at least, to make refunds to those who have already paid fees,” he stated.

He additionally underscored that the new policy will offer greater flexibility to parents, giving those who prefer to pay fees the option to do so within the framework set forth by the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“The beauty of this is that parents who are willing to pay can do so under this policy that has been introduced by the NDC,” he stated.

The announcement follows the NDC’s commitment during their 2024 campaign to introduce the free tertiary tuition policy, which seeks to alleviate the financial strain on students and their families while expanding access to higher education.

In his remarks, the minister-designate vowed to fully support the policy and ensure its successful execution.

  • Let’s put the past behind us – NPP Manhyia South Chair to Wontumi

Let’s put the past behind us – NPP Manhyia South Chair to Wontumi

The Manhyia South constituency chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Adjei Mensah Ofori Atta, (Chairman Tom Tom), has extended an apology to the Ashanti Regional chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Wontumi).

This comes in light of comments made amid the recent verbal clashes between the camps of Chairman Wontumi and Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South.

In an interview with Pure FM, Ofori Atta stressed the importance of both factions resolving their differences to support Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in winning the 2024 elections.

He believes that the appointment of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as the running mate to Dr. Bawumia should mark the end of internal divisions.

Ofori Atta expressed his readiness to collaborate with Chairman Wontumi and the regional campaign team to secure victory for the NPP in the upcoming elections. He publicly apologized, stating, “We have resolved every issue. I want to leverage your platform to send a message to our regional chairman, Wontumi, that if I said something wrong during the chaotic moments, I’m sorry, and he should forgive me. I have already met him and spoken to him, but I believe I have to make it public.

“If we don’t unite and support him to deliver in the Ashanti Region, then we have no business going into the elections. The one thing we need going into this election is unity, and I believe we should all work for it. As the constituency chairman, I have no option but to support the regional chairman. Let me repeat once again that if I said something to him and it didn’t sit well with him, I apologize. He should forgive me, and let’s all unite,” he said.

Mr Ofori Atta’s comments follow the confirmation of Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, as the running mate of the NPP candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the 2024 elections.

On Thursday, July 5, 2024, the National Council of the NPP endorsed Dr. Bawumia’s recommendation to have NAPO as his running mate.

NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, who described Dr. Opoku Prempeh as “charismatic” and “bold,” endorsed his position.

“I am happy to report that after the necessary consideration, the NC unanimously endorses Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as the running mate of Dr. Bawumia,” the General Secretary of the NPP is quoted as having said at a press conference on Thursday.

“He is a charismatic, bold leader who excelled at the Ministry of Education and at Energy,” he said.

  • We are battle-ready for 2024 – New Ablekuma South constituency executives declare

The newly-elected constituency executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Ablekuma South have been sworn into office.

The new executives were elected during the constituency elections on Saturday, October 22, 2022.

During the swearing-in ceremony on Monday, October 24, 2022, the Member of Parliament for the constituency, Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, used the opportunity to call for deeper efforts at fostering unity in the party.

“If someone tells you that the NDC is not sweet, then the person doesn’t know the NDC. If there is any such person, then the person doesn’t understand the NDC and that is why it needs even more unity. If you desire to enjoy the NDC, it will be so for you,” he said.

He explained further that in the same way the delegates of the party voted for the new executives, as well as how the constituents gave him a massive victory in the 2020 elections, he expects that they would work to increase the numbers.

He also said that the hopes of many Ghanaians are in the members of the NDC and as such, they should work hard not to crash them.

“I know 61% of you voted for me in the last elections and I will never take it for granted. Together, let us work and better those numbers in the next election and give Ablekuma South 70% of your votes. And the way we can accomplish that is through our executives and with our support for their work.

“The whole country has high expectations of us and they are looking forward to us bringing back John Dramani Mahama and the NDC to power. Friends, we cannot afford to let the people down, so let us not fail them,” he added.

Addressing the gathering as well, the Organiser of constituency, Alfred Addotey Allotey, stated that the NDC is “battle-ready” for the 2024 general elections.

“Let us all rise up and prove to the rest of Ghana that the NDC in Ablekuma South is battle-ready and that we will be victorious,” he said.

The swearing-in ceremony was conducted by the Greater Accra Chairman of the NDC, Ade Coker.
