Berekum West MP calls for consistent maintenance of national stadiums to avoid deterioration

Berekum West MP, Dickson Kyere-Duah, is calling for regular maintenance of Ghana’s national stadiums instead of waiting until they deteriorate and require costly repairs.

His comments come as discussions on renovating the country’s five national stadiums gain attention, especially with the Cape Coast and Accra Sports Stadiums set for another round of renovations.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Citi Sports after watching the Black Stars train, he urged Ghanaians to support the team despite their failure to qualify for the 2025 AFCON.

“We don’t do periodic maintenance. You don’t wait for the facility to deteriorate to the levels where cost of maintenance becomes so huge. You do it periodically, every month, every quarter, every year, continuous renovation will ensure that the stadiums will stay in very good condition all the time.”

“Government should have a dedicated fund through the National Sports Authority to ensure periodic maintenance of our facilities.”

Kwesi Appiah hopes both Ghana and Sudan qualify for 2025 AFCON

Kwesi Appiah is optimistic that both Sudan and Ghana will secure spots in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

The former Ghana international, now the head coach of Sudan’s national team, the Falcons, has had a mixed start to the AFCON qualifiers with his team.

After two matches, Sudan has recorded one win and one loss, defeating Niger but falling to Angola. This leaves them in second place in Group F with three points.

Ghana’s Black Stars, under coach Otto Addo, currently sit third in the group with just one point, following a 1-0 loss to Angola and a 1-1 draw with Niger.

As Ghana and Sudan prepare to face each other in back-to-back games on the third and fourth matchdays of the qualifiers, Appiah shared his hopes that both teams will qualify for the tournament.

“I hope Ghana and Sudan qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament,” he told Asempa FM in an exclusive interview.

“We just have to pray and hope that we all achieve our aim,” he added.

The Black Stars are set to host Sudan in the first leg of their AFCON qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium on Thursday, October 10, with kick-off scheduled for 16:00 GMT.

The second leg is slated for Monday, October 14, at the Martyrs of February Stadium in Libya.

  • CAF greenlights Baba Yara Sports Stadium to host Ghana’s 2025 AFCON qualifiers opener

CAF greenlights Baba Yara Sports Stadium to host Ghana’s 2025 AFCON qualifiers opener

Confederation of African Football (CAF) has given the green light for Ghana to host its 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers opener against Angola at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

The match is scheduled for Thursday, September 5, 2024, as per the dates announced by CAF.

Recently, the stadium’s pitch was severely damaged after a five-day church event, leaving it in a dire state.

A video trending on social media shared showed the once lush green pitch looking dead and brown.

Despite the damage, representatives from the National Sports Authority (NSA) in the Ashanti Region have reassured fans that they are taking swift action to restore the pitch to its optimal condition.

“We have a robust plan, a crack field, and a maintenance team to recover the pitch and restore the facility in general in record time throughout August. Stakeholders can rest assured,” the NSA Ashanti Region stated in a post.

Meanwhile, Angola manager Pedro Gonçalves, speaking ahead of the game has called for a ‘fair’ game following unspecified displeasing treatment in their last outing against Ghana in Kumasi.

“Both games in the last qualifiers were very balanced, so I guess we have our chances this time.

I hope we will have a good game in Kumasi because the last time, a lot of things happened, so I hope CAF opens their eyes.

A lot happened, and Ghana doesn’t need to be in that situation. I am hoping for a fair match, and in the end, we will see who’s going to win,” he said.

Ghana and Angola are in Group F for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers along with Sudan and Niger.

Both nations faced each other during the 2023 AFCON qualifiers, where Ghana won the first leg 1-0 and drew the second leg 1-1.

  • Morocco confirmed as host of 2025 AFCON

Following Algeria’s withdrawal from the bid to host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially designated Morocco as the host nation for the 2025 edition.

Originally, Guinea was slated to host the 2025 AFCON, but they lost their hosting rights in September 2023.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe confirmed this decision, citing Guinea’s lack of progress in preparing for the tournament.

The announcement was made by CAF President Patrice Motsepe on Wednesday, September 27, in Cairo, Egypt.

The 35th edition of Africa’s premier football competition will be held across various cities in Morocco, including Casa, Fez, Marrakech, Rabat, Tangier, and Agadir.

Initially scheduled for June–July 2025, the 2025 AFCON might now be hosted in January–February 2026.

This adjustment is due to the expanded FIFA Club World Cup set to take place in June–July 2025.

Notably, this will be the second time that Morocco hosts Africa’s premier football competition, with the first instance occurring in 1988.

Meanwhile, the 2023 AFCON is set to be held in Ivory Coast from January 13 to 11, 2024, featuring 24 nations competing for the ultimate prize.
