Professional job by Police prevented unlawful action of the youth from escalating – MFWA on 2024 polls

Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), Sulemana Braimah, has commended the Ghana Police Service for their professionalism in managing potentially volatile situations during the 2024 general elections.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile programme on Saturday, December 14, Mr. Braimah reflected on the challenges posed by the actions of some youth during the election period and emphasized that the police’s decisions were instrumental in preventing the escalation of chaos.

“It got to a point I was scared about the actions of the youth,” he revealed. Mr. Braimah explained that if the police had resorted to forceful measures such as tear gas or pepper spray, the situation could have spiraled into chaos and even caused a stampede.

“All that would have happened would have been unpleasant,” he added, underscoring the gravity of the potential consequences.

He applauded the police for their professionalism in handling the situation, particularly considering the scale of the national elections, which he described as far more complex compared to a by-election involving fewer constituencies.

“The police did a fantastic and professional job and must be commended,” Mr. Braimah stated.

He noted that the sheer number of polling stations and constituencies posed significant challenges, yet the police’s approach ensured peace and order throughout the process.

2024 polls: Appalud IGP; his security arrangement saved Ghana – NPP’s Ohene Ntow

Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) General Secretary Nana Ohene Ntow has praised the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, for the exceptional security arrangements during the December 7 elections. He noted that the IGP’s comprehensive plan ensured the country’s safety and prevented potential disruptions.

Speaking on TV3 on Saturday, December 14, Nana Ohene Ntow emphasised that the IGP demonstrated boldness and expertise despite the immense pressure surrounding the elections.

He added that political parties were impressed with the effective measures put in place. Nana Ohene Ntow urged Ghanaians to commend the IGP for his efforts in maintaining peace and order during the polls.

“To be frank, Ghanaians must stand up for Dampare. His security arrangements and strategic planning saved this country. But for him and his team, this country would have probably tipped over.

We saw how some recalcitrant soldiers behaved, but Dampare insisted that the only time the military would be officially deployed would be under his instruction, and he stayed committed to his promise. God bless him for the work he did,” Nana Ohene Ntow noted.

He urged Ghanaians to commend leaders when they leave above expectation, just as they condemn leaders who underperform.

Meanwhile, Professor Ransford Gyampo, a political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, has defended the IGP against recent criticisms by ACP Dr Benjamin Agordzo, describing the comments as unwarranted and unfair.

Speaking on Thursday, Professor Gyampo commended the IGP for his transformative leadership of the Ghana Police Service, which he believes has significantly elevated the institution’s reputation and effectiveness.

“The above is unfair and unfortunate. Respectfully, even though there’s freedom of speech, it doesn’t lie in the mouth of my respected retired police officer to be saying these,” Professor Gyampo remarked.

He stressed Dr Dampare’s achievements, including his resilience in office despite challenges, his unwavering commitment to fairness during the recent elections, and his bold defiance of orders that conflicted with his principles as a law enforcement officer.

Professor Gyampo credited the IGP with changing the face of policing in Ghana, noting that he has garnered widespread praise, including from opposition parties, for his impartiality and professionalism.

“This is the only IGP who has survived the plot of removal by his appointing authority for doing his work well. He is the only IGP who could stop the planned massive deployment of soldiers to confuse some voting centres in the just-ended elections,” he stated, adding that Dampare’s reforms have been widely felt across the country.

Suspected NPP polling agents demand payment from party leadership after 2024 polls

Suspected polling agents of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ejisu constituency have picketed at the party’s office, demanding full payment for their work during the just-ended 2024 elections.

The aggrieved agents accused party executives of failing to honor the agreed payment amount, sparking frustration and anger among those who monitored the polls on behalf of the party.

One of the polling agents, expressing her displeasure, said the leadership had shortchanged them. “We will not let this slide just because of the love of the party, as we used to do in the past when we received 20gh when we were supposed to be paid 50gh,” she lamented.

According to her, the agreed payment was GHC 500, but the executives allegedly delivered only GHC 200, leaving the remaining GHC 300 unaccounted for.

“They were supposed to give us 500gh, and they have brought an envelope with just 200gh and have taken the 300gh. That is why we are at the office,” she explained.

“This isn’t democracy, this is anarchy – Miracles Aboagye condemns alleged attacks, chaos by NDC members

Spokesperson for Dr. Bawumia’s campaign team, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has called on the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to address recent violent incidents involving their supporters.

In a Facebook post, Miracles condemned reports of an individual allegedly beaten to death during an attempt to loot fertilizers at Akomadan in the Offinso North District.

The chaos reportedly involved NDC members and also left two others stabbed, while the NADMO head office was vandalized.

He expressed deep concern over these acts of violence and emphasized that they have no place in a democratic process. According to Miracles, the opposing party had already accepted defeat to help maintain peace, making these tragic events unnecessary.

He urged the NDC leadership to step in quickly and bring their members under control to prevent further unrest.

“Surely, this isn’t right… The leadership of the NDC must call their members to order immediately. You can’t kill yourselves over victory”, he said.

“Your opponent has conceded defeat and he did this timely enough to diffuse tension and prevent such unnecessary deaths. Let’s show leadership and call these NDC Hoodlums to order. This isn’t democracy. This is anarchy and it has no place in our country”, he added.

He further emphasized the need for civility as the country continues its electoral processes, highlighting the importance of ensuring the safety and well-being of all citizens.

“Not even these results will shake me” – Efia Odo after failed Bawumia win prophecy

Ghanaian socialite and influencer Efia Odo has reacted to the results of the December 7 elections, where the opposition NDC claimed victory.

Earlier on December 2, 2024, Efia Odo had predicted on X that NPP presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia would win the election. Her prediction stirred controversy, with some accusing her of being paid to support Bawumia.

In response, Efia Odo explained that her prediction was based on a divine revelation and not an endorsement, firmly denying the bribery claims.

After John Mahama’s victory was announced, Efia Odo shared her thoughts on X, expressing her continued faith in God despite her prediction not coming true.

She acknowledged the backlash and trolling she received but stated that her trust in God remains unshaken.

“We all have to go through a moment of shame, insult, and being made fun of because of what we believe. And in those moments, will your belief waiver, or will it stand firm?

“I’m a believer in God through Jesus Christ. Not even these results will shake me or make me lose faith in Him. Laugh now; my peace is in my soul, and no one can take it from me because Jesus Christ gave it to me,” Efia Odo posted.

Meanwhile, although the Electoral Commission is yet to officially announce the final results, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP flagbearer, has conceded defeat and congratulated his opponent, John Mahama of the NDC.

Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Sam George, has shared a heartfelt and powerful prayer as the final day for Ghana to make the ‘big decision’ of choosing the next president.

In a post shared on X on December 7, 2024, the Ningo-Prampram MP, ahead of the 2024 general elections, began with an acknowledgement of the struggles and hardships of the Ghanaian people, calling for the need for healing and change.

“Our nation bleeds and requires healing. Guide and guard the process today”, he said

The prayer continues with a call for mercy and protection for all voters who will travel to exercise their franchise, seeking protection also for NDC “as we seek a reset of our land.”

He further prays that any attempts at violence or manipulation of the will of the people be swiftly dealt with by God’s justice.

The plea for divine intervention extends to those who may seek to disrupt the peaceful conduct of the elections, asking for God’s wrath to fall upon anyone plotting to harm the process.

Sam George also prayed for the victory of the NDC and its candidate, John Dramani Mahama, calling for a manifestation of God’s glory in his constituency.

Video: Voters hoot at driver carrying food reportedly sent by Ursula Owusu-Ekuful in Ablekuma West

Voters in the Ablekuma West Constituency have allegedly rejected a delivery of food packs sent by MP Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, sparking mixed reactions and concerns about election fairness.

The incident occurred at a polling centre this morning, where an angry crowd booed and hooted at the driver of a pickup truck carrying the food, forcing the vehicle to leave amidst protests.

The vehicle’s occupants explained that the food packs were meant for party officials at the polling center. However, voters viewed it as an attempt to influence the election, leading to the confrontation.

A viral video capturing the scene has since circulated widely online, showing voters chanting “We don’t want it!” as the pickup truck was driven away under the watchful eyes of election officials and security personnel.

The incident has sparked mixed reactions on social media. While some have praised the voters for rejecting what they saw as unethical behaviour, others have called for calm and a more cautious approach to allegations of election misconduct.

This controversy comes after a similar incident on Monday, December 2, during the special voting exercise. Lydia Seyram Alhassan, the MP for Ayawaso West Wuogon, was allegedly seen distributing food and water to people waiting in line to vote.

The MP has denied these claims, explaining that the food packages shown in the viral video were intended for her campaign team, Electoral Commission staff, and journalists at the polling station.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of the Commission of Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), Dr. Joseph Whittal, had weighed in on another viral video showing security personnel collecting food while in a voting queue during the special voting exercise.

Speaking to journalists after a health screening event for 300 CHRAJ staff who will monitor human rights issues during the December 7 elections, Dr. Whittal expressed concern.

“When I looked at the video, it was more of an embarrassment because security officers must be security conscious,” he said, adding that such actions undermine the integrity of the electoral process.

“I want to caution the NPP administration and our security services to uphold their duty to the people of Ghana. Resist any nefarious actions that could threaten the fairness of these elections,” Mahama stated.

Who shared rice and chicken in America during their elections? – Blakk Rasta slams politicians

Blakk Rasta, a well-known broadcaster, has spoken out against vote-buying and the use of bribes by politicians to sway voters during elections.

He criticized recent cases of vote-buying, particularly during the Special Voting exercise, where Ayawaso West Wuogon MP Lydia Alhassan was spotted handing out food to people waiting at polling stations.

Calling the act disgraceful, Blakk Rasta contrasted it with the disciplined behavior of voters in the United States during their recent elections.

“Ancient Ghana was here before America, yet in their elections, nobody handed out fried rice and chicken to voters in a queue. Nobody went around bribing the electorate,” he said.

He also questioned the integrity of those involved in such practices.

“Where lies your integrity? How do you feel knowing your election was won through bribery?” he asked.

Blakk Rasta went on to criticise the political system in Ghana, claiming that it is designed to oppress the people.

“Politics is here to oppress us. Before we can get food, shelter, or anything, we have to vote for them. Even when they use our own money to provide us water, we still have to vote for them first,” he fumed.

To him, every election in Ghana exposes how easily some voters are swayed.

“Every time it comes to an election, I see the reality. I see how short-circuited the Ghanaian brain is. It shows us how mediocre we are and tells us that we are still in the stone age. The common sense of the average Ghanaian is so low, and it hurts.”

Blakk Rasta also noted that in Ghana, elections prioritise peace over justice and equal rights, a development he has highly condemned.

“In all our elections, we prioritise peace over equal rights and justice. Even when politicians misbehave, you’re forced to walk away in the name of peace,” he said.

  • We’ve received intel about ‘macho men’ wanting to disrupt 2024 polls – IGP

We’ve received intel about ‘macho men’ wanting to disrupt 2024 polls – IGP

Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has disclosed that intelligence gathered by the Ghana Police Service indicates the presence of groups intending to disrupt the upcoming December elections through acts of intimidation and violence.

“There is this culture of machoism, where people think that biceps are the basis for determining one’s strength. Fortunately, as you can see, with the things we’ve done going forward in these elections, I think most of them have advised themselves and found something to do,” Dr. Dampare said.

He continued, “But we are not going to be over complacent, thinking that this is the end of the game because our intelligence base shows that there are pockets of them around wanting to take things to a level that we will not tolerate.”

The IGP was speaking during a security engagement with political parties in Accra, attended by representatives from the Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Immigration Service, and other key stakeholders.

Dr. Dampare also warned against the use of unauthorised security outfits and individuals wearing uniforms mimicking state security agencies, stating the Police would act decisively to maintain order.

“The environment where people want to use certain uniforms that make them feel half-police, half-military, or half of anything resembling security is unacceptable in this critical period. We want you to know our position, so when we act, it’s not mistaken for bias,” he said.

Emphasising the importance of peaceful elections, Dr. Dampare expressed gratitude to political parties for their cooperation and urged continued efforts to ensure a smooth process.

“Our plea is for us to finish and finish very well, to the glory of God and for the benefit of this country, especially for the generation that will come after us. It is in the same spirit that we are also committed to showing our patriotism by ensuring this election is peaceful and to the satisfaction of everybody,” he noted.

The IGP highlighted the Police’s strategy of transparency and frequent engagement to build trust, mitigate misinformation, and foster collaboration with political stakeholders.

He also emphasised open communication, stating that contact details for police leadership at all levels had been distributed to facilitate swift resolution of disputes and avoid unnecessary escalation.

Dr. Dampare reiterated the Police Service’s commitment to professionalism, fairness, and firmness in its operations. He urged political parties to extend the message of peace and cooperation to their supporters, underscoring the shared responsibility for ensuring a violence-free election.

“Let us carry this spirit of orderliness and nonviolence to the end. Together, we can make this election a proud moment in our democratic history,” he said.

Political parties represented at the engagement, including the New Patriotic Party (NPP), National Democratic Congress (NDC), All People’s Congress (APC), and Convention People’s Party (CPP), pledged to uphold the rule of law and cooperate with the Police throughout the electoral process.

NDC has contacted me to perform for them – Stonebwoy discloses

Ghanaian reggae and dancehall artist Stonebwoy says he is currently mulling an invitation from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to perform at one of their campaign rallies ahead of the 2024 polls in December.

Making an appearance on Hitz FM on November 28, 2024, the “Bawasaaba singer” revealed multiple political parties have knocked on his doors to perform, including the NDC.

Stonebwoy clarified that although he has not personally engaged in discussions with NDC representatives, there has been communication from the party.

However, he asserted that his acceptance of these invitations would be primarily based on the party’s ability to settle his financial demands.

“There are a few offers I’m considering. I believe there’s one from the NDC. To clarify, I haven’t spoken directly to anyone from the NDC, but there has been a call from them.

We’re negotiating the financial terms, and if they are favourable, I’ll perform for my fans and use some of the money for the BHIM Festival,” he added.

He also emphasised the importance of peace during the election period, stating, “December is coming, so peaceful elections are all we seek.

Whenever you see me on any platform, I’m performing for peace, whether it’s for NPP, NDC, or CPP. It’s all for peace because we are all one Ghana. Ghana first, Ghana must win in the end,” he concluded.

IGP, security heads to be held accountable for any lives lost during 2024 polls – NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has emphasized the need for heightened security preparations for the 2024 elections, urging the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, and other key security heads to ensure the safety of all citizens.

During a press conference held on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, the party’s National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, underscored that the NDC would not hesitate to hold the IGP and the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) personally responsible for any casualties that might occur during the elections.

Gyamfi stressed that maintaining peace and protecting lives must be the priority for all security agencies, warning against any lapses that could compromise the integrity of the electoral process.

“The NDC and by extension the people of Ghana will hold the IGP and the Chief of Defence Staff and our security heads responsible for the loss of a single life in the 2024 general elections.

“As I have already said elections are about counting heads and not cutting heads. No person must lose his or her life at the altar of elections,” he stated.

The party also accused some NPP members of planning to rig the upcoming elections at all costs.

Sammy Gyamfi urged the Election Security Taskforce to look into these claims to ensure a peaceful election.

He added that the NDC is sure of a big win if the elections are fair and peaceful.

“We have no doubt that Ghanaians will choose an honest leader who upholds the virtue of truth over one who is completely allergic to truth,” Sammy Gyamfi noted.

  • I will run as an independent candidate – Cynthia Morrison debunks rumours

I will run as an independent candidate – Cynthia Morrison debunks rumours

New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Agona West, Cynthia Mamle Morrison, has reiterated her decision to contest the 2024 parliamentary elections as an independent candidate.

This development follows the circulation of videos on social media featuring Morrison alongside several NPP MPs, including caucus leader Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin and Kennedy Agyapong, the MP for Assin Central.

Some individuals began speculating about the possibility of her returning to the NPP, but engaging the media, Morrison noted that she would run for the Agona West seat one more time, but not on the NPP ticket.

Her seat was among the four declared vacant by Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin on October 17, 2024, a move that altered the parliamentary landscape.

The MPs affected by this ruling were Cynthia Morrison (Agona West), Kwadjo Asante (Suhum), Andrew Amoako Asiamah (Fomena), and Peter Kwakye Ackah (Amenfi Central). According to the Speaker, their decision to contest the upcoming elections under different banners effectively vacated their seats.

Morrison was first elected as the MP for Agona West in 2016 on the NPP platform and successfully defended her seat in the 2020 parliamentary elections.

However, she lost the NPP primaries for the 2024 elections to Christopher Arthur, who is now the party’s candidate for the upcoming December 7 polls. She initially sought to run independently, citing mistreatment from the current NPP leadership as her motivation.

    Background:

On October 18, 2024, Ghana’s Supreme Court suspended Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin’s ruling concerning the vacation of four parliamentary seats. This decision came after an application was filed by New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament, with the case being presided over by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

The court’s ruling temporarily halts the Speaker’s earlier decision, made on October 17, 2024, pending a full legal review and final judgment.

Speaker Bagbin had ruled in favor of a motion by Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, which declared four parliamentary seats vacant. This move shifted the majority in Parliament to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Bagbin argued that the affected MPs, by opting to run as independent candidates or on the ticket of a different party for the December 7, 2024, elections, had violated Article 97(g) and (h) of the 1992 Constitution.

He explained that these provisions aim to prevent party defection and cross-carpeting, ensuring party loyalty throughout an MP’s term.

On October 22, 2024, Speaker Bagbin adjourned the parliamentary session indefinitely (sine die), just a week after MPs returned from a long recess.

Majority of anomalies in voter register resolved – Jean Mensa

Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, has reported that significant progress has been made in addressing the issues identified in the voter register.

This she said during an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on Tuesday, October 1, held at the Alisa Hotel.

She noted that while the register is still a work in progress and contains some minor inaccuracies, this is to be expected in any large-scale registration exercise.

Jean Mensa reassured stakeholders that the commission is aware of these challenges and is actively working to correct them.

“These errors are not unusual. All it takes are conscientious efforts to get them resolved,” she stated.

She assured political party representatives that the EC has already taken steps to correct the discrepancies identified since the initial release of the voter register.

“You will realise that the voters register for today is different from what was provided to the parties in August,” she explained.

Jean Mensa highlighted that the discrepancies detected to date have been largely rectified.

“The register that we have today is different from what was given to the political parties in August,” she reiterated, urging all stakeholders to trust the commission in its efforts.

“We have a track record of delivering free and fair elections. Our staff are well trained, and we have what it takes to produce a credible register,” Jean Mensa added.

She called on all political parties to trust the commission ahead of the December polls.

EC blames aspirant disqualification on refusal to correct errors in their forms

Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has announced the disqualification of several presidential hopefuls for the upcoming elections on December 7, 2024, due to their failure to amend inaccuracies in their nomination paperwork.

During a press conference held in Accra on Friday, EC Chairperson Jean Mensa detailed the situation. She noted that the candidates were given sufficient opportunity to correct the noted errors but did not comply with the necessary requirements.

Among those disqualified are Bernard Mornah from the People’s National Convention (PNC) and Janet Nabla of the People’s National Party (PNP).

Other candidates facing disqualification include Nana Stephens Adjepong, Paul Perkoh, James Kwesi Oppong, John Enyonam Kwakwu Kpikpi, Dr. Samuel Sampong Ankrah, and Nii Amu Darko.

Furthermore, candidates Samuel Apea-Danquah, Desmond Abrefah, and Kofi Asamoah Siaw from the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) were also removed from the electoral race.

The EC reiterated that the disqualification process adhered strictly to electoral guidelines, ensuring that the proceedings were conducted with integrity and transparency.

The EC Chairperson noted, for instance, that “Mr. Samuel Apea-Dankwa was presented with a number of issues to resolve, including not filing a tax certificate for his Vice Presidential candidate and then some of his pages from the form, and he had incomplete particulars for some of his supporters.

“Unfortunately, though he was provided with the opportunity to correct this, he was unable to do so and the committee recommended that he be disqualified.”

“Ms. Janet Asana Nabla also used the registration details of supporters in certain districts to support her nomination in other districts. Again, the Vice Presidential candidate did not sign the nomination form. The issues were however not resolved, and the committees recommended that she be disqualified.”

“…Mr Bernard Mornah also had incomplete details of supporters. He also used registered voters in a particular district to support the nomination in other districts. His form also contained varying signatures for the same supporters and, in some cases,, the same signature for different supporters. The committee was of the view that he be disqualified.”

During the party’s congress, held to elect new national executives ahead of the December general elections, Mornah dominated the race with 1,138 votes. His rival, David Apasera, managed to secure 216 votes.

In his victory address, Mornah extended a hand of cooperation to Apasera, emphasizing the importance of collaboration to strengthen the PNC ahead of the general elections.

He underscored the need for unity to elevate the party’s chances of gaining political influence.

Despite an earlier delay caused by an injunction from Apasera’s camp, the congress proceeded smoothly after the legal issue was resolved.

Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the running mate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has officially stepped down from her role as Chancellor of the Women’s University in Africa, located in Harare, Zimbabwe.

This decision comes as she shifts her full attention to the 2024 presidential campaign of John Mahama.

A statement released by James Agyenim-Boateng, the Spokesman for the NDC running mate, and shared with the Ghana News Agency, confirmed the development. It stated that Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s formal disengagement from the university is intended to allow her to dedicate herself entirely to the Mahama 2024 campaign.

During her seven-year tenure as Chancellor, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang made significant contributions to the growth and restructuring of the Women’s University in Africa. Working closely with the university’s management, Board of Trustees, and Council, she played a pivotal role in making the institution more functional and financially independent.

The statement highlighted her focus on supporting women who were unable to attend university in their youth but sought educational opportunities later in life. Additionally, she concentrated on providing access to young women who had been left out of high school, ensuring they had pathways to higher education.

Under her leadership, the university became more appealing to women by offering flexible learning options and creating programs that bridged the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang will oversee her final graduation ceremony at the university on August 30, before returning to Accra the following day. Her departure marks the end of a notable chapter in her academic leadership as she now directs her energies toward the upcoming elections.

20 takeaways from Mahama’s media engagement

The flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has revealed pragmatic measures he would implement to salvage the Ghanaian economy should he be elected president.

During a media address on Sunday, July 7, Mahama outlined his vision for the various sectors that contribute immensely to the economy.

    1. The 24-hour economy policy will increase the local production of goods for import-substitution, exports and create decent well-paying jobs for the youth.
    2. My government will scrap COVID levy, E-levy, bet winnings levy and nuisance port levies to ameliorate the plight of suffering Ghanaians.
    3. Free SHS has come to stay. No one can cancel it. I am coming to improve its implementation and make it better. I will support any bill intended to improve education in Ghana.
    4. My government will invest $3 billion in ICT and partner with local tech start-ups and businesses to launch a ‘Digital Jobs initiative’ that will create at least 300,000 skilled employment opportunities for the youth in the digital space.
    5. I will establish a National Women’s Development Bank that will be run by women to support one (1) million women-led and women-owned businesses.
    6. I will roll out the One Million Coders Program that will train one million youth in coding and other IT programs for job creation.
    7. I am a staunch Christian who has supported my local Assemblies of God church to build churches for God. But I don’t condone stealing in the name of God. I will conduct a forensic audit into the cathedral loot.
    8. I will not allow any of my appointees to involve themselves in mining or illegal mining. Mining in forest reserves will be banned under my government.
    9. No appointee of mine will be allowed to buy state assets.
    10. I will prioritize fiscal discipline to restore investor confidence in the economy and pursue prudent measures that will boost cocoa and oil production so as to increase our forex earnings and stabilize the exchange rate.
    11. I will fight corruption and ensure accountability on the part of government officials, whether they be NPP or NDC. I will not scrap the OSP. Neither will I be a corruption clearing agent.
    12. I have been out of office for 7 years, 7 months. The NPP has not found any evidence of wrongdoing against me. Their lies against me to the effect that I own hotels in Dubai and that my government spent $10 million on presidential diaries have all been exposed. Don’t fall for the NPP’s lies.
    13. My track-record in the fight against corruption is there for all to see. I prosecuted my own appointees, including my own friend and retrieved about GHS50 million for the state in the GYEEDA scandal.
    14. I will run a lean government of not more than 60 ministers and cut down on government expenditure and waste.
    15. I will create a safe and congenial atmosphere for the media and anti-corruption agencies to
      Work.
    16. I will pursue justice for the families of the 8 Ghanaians who were murdered during the 2020 general elections and other victims of state-sponsored brutalities and punish the culprits.
    17. I will modernize agriculture to boost food production in order to reduce food inflation and hardships. I will also prioritize agribusiness and agro-processing for import substitution and exports.
    18. I have have been exorcised from the “father for all” syndrome.
    19. We shall protect the votes of Ghanaians through vigilance.
    20. Four (4) years is enough for me to reset Ghana, create a 24-hour economy, wage a serious fight against corruption and restore our nation back to the path of development and progress.
  • 2024 polls: “We have been ready for years” – IGP Dampare assures public

2024 polls: “We have been ready for years” – IGP Dampare assures public

Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has assured the public of the Ghana Police Service’s preparedness to oversee security operations throughout the upcoming December 7 general elections.

He conveyed this commitment during a gathering at Accra’s Alisa Hotel on Thursday, July 4, where he engaged with a distinguished group organized by the Christian Council of Ghana.

Dr. Dampare underscored that the police, alongside other security agencies within the National Election Security Task Force, have implemented robust measures to institutionalize and integrate election security in recent years.

This effort has contributed significantly to ensuring peaceful and secure electoral processes.

He emphasized the proactive stance of the police in treating local elections as matters of national importance, ensuring adequate security measures are in place.

He reassured Ghanaians of a peaceful process, stating, “We have been ready for years because we have institutionalised and mainstreamed election security for the first time in the history of this country.

Elections are not seen as events but as a process in a cycle where the end of one is the beginning of another.”

The IGP also noted the success of recent elections, including internal party elections, saying, “All the elections for the past almost three years, including internal elections of the parties, the selection of parliamentary candidates, and presidential candidates, have been historically secure.

This is an indication of our readiness, working in concert with security forces and more importantly, with patriotic Ghanaians who want to see the country remain at peace.”

He additionally highlighted the significance of professionalism and adopting a de-escalation approach in managing conflicts, emphasizing that the police’s actions should be justified and focused on preserving peace and security for the welfare of forthcoming generations.

For the 2024 elections, we are ensuring a clear de-escalation mindset amid confusion and agitations. We need to be professional and ensure that we settle issues among the conflicting parties in a way that unites them,” he added.

  • 2024 polls: ACDT warns of potential cyberattack threat

2024 polls: ACDT warns of potential cyberattack threat

Africa Centre for Digital Transformation (ACDT) has issued a warning about potential cyber threats to Ghana’s upcoming December 7 elections, urging stakeholders to take immediate steps to protect the integrity of the electoral process.

In a press release, the ACDT highlighted the increasing risk of cyber-attacks in Ghana, especially as digital systems play a crucial role in various aspects of Ghanaian society, including elections.

ACDT urged the government to develop and regularly update incident response plans to swiftly address and mitigate any cyber incidents that may arise.

Executive Director Kwesi Atuahene emphasized the critical role of cybersecurity in ensuring a secure, transparent, and credible electoral process in Ghana.

“As we approach the 2024 elections, we must be prepared to counter cyber threats and protect the integrity of our electoral systems,” Mr. Atuahene said.

Emphasizing the national significance of addressing these threats, the organization stressed the importance of securing the electoral process.

The ACDT’s concerns are underscored by previous cyber incidents during elections in West Africa.

In Nigeria’s 2015 and 2019 elections, cyber-attacks targeted the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), attempting to breach databases and spread misinformation.

Despite some compromises, INEC maintained that these incidents did not affect the overall election outcomes.

Similarly, in Sierra Leone’s 2018 elections, cyber-attacks on the National Electoral Commission (NEC) aimed to disrupt voting processes and manipulate public opinion, prompting enhanced cybersecurity measures by the government to safeguard the electoral process.

Referencing Ghana’s own electoral experiences, the ACDT noted incidents such as the 2016 cyber-attack on the Electoral Commission’s website, causing temporary disruptions.

The ACDT is committed to supporting the Ghanaian government, the Electoral Commission, and all stakeholders in this effort, urging them to prioritize cybersecurity and work collaboratively to protect Ghana’s democracy from cyber threats.

  • Election 2024: New poll shows Mahama take lead in poll conducted in 4 NPP Accra strongholds

Election 2024: New poll shows Mahama take lead in poll conducted in 4 NPP Accra strongholds

An opinion poll conducted by Global Info Analytics across four constituencies in the Greater Accra Region reveals that John Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, currently holds the majority of votes.

These constituencies—Okaikwei Central, Okaikwei South, Anyaa Sowutuom, and Trobu—have historically been strongholds of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), evidenced by their voting patterns in previous elections.

However, the poll results, released on May 31, 2024, indicate a significant shift just six months before the general election. In constituencies where the NPP secured an average of 62% of the vote in the 2020 election, the leading opposition candidate, John Mahama, now leads with 40.5%.

“The current vice president and flag bearer of the governing NPP, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is on 36%, Nana Kwame Bediako, the New Force with 1.8%, Alan Kyeremanten, Movement for Change with 1.7%. 10.4% of voters say they will not vote and 9.4% are undecided,” the poll revealed.

In the parliamentary election, Patrick Yaw Boamah leads in Okaikwei Central with 50.5%, Baba Sadiq, 36%, 6.9% of voters do not intend to vote while 7.6% are undecided. Hon. Patrick Boamah won the seat in the 2020 election with nearly 19% margin.

According to Global InfoAnalytics, in Okaikwei South, the incumbent member of parliament’s chances of retaining her seat is hanging by the thread as poll shows the race is tied with Dakoa Newman leading with 40.4%, followed closely by Ernest Adomako, 38.5%. 10.6% are undecided and 10.5% will not vote. In the 2020 election, the incumbent won her race with nearly 22% margin.

“In the Anyaa Sowutuom, Elder Emmanuel Tobin leads the race with 41.8% followed by Emmanuel A. Allotey, NDC, 31.9%, Grace Ashley, Movement for Change, 2.7%, undecided, 10.1% and I will not vote, 13.5%. Hon. Dickson Adomako Kissi, the outgoing member of parliament, won the seat in the 2020 elections with nearly 30% margin,” Global Info Analytics indicated.

The Poll’s outcome shows that in the Trobu constituency, where Gloria Owusu, the NPP parliamentary candidate who ousted Hon. Moses Anim, leads with 44.8%, Dr John Kofi Halm with 36.7%, others, 0.5%, undecided, 5.8% and I will not vote, 12.2%. Hon. Moses Anim won the 2020 elections with nearly 28% margin.

“Analysis of the poll shows that in all the four BLUE constituencies, there is strong evidence from the data to suggest “skirt and blouse voting” tactical voting as all NPP candidates outperform their presidential candidate,” Mussa Dankwa’s outfit revealed.

Regarding voter inducement through projects during the election period, the poll reveals that only 28% of voters would support the government if they initiate projects just before the elections.

In contrast, 64% would not be swayed to vote for the ruling party, and 5% remain indifferent.

Similarly, on the question of whether the One-Student-One-Tablet policy might influence voters in the December election, only 31% indicated it would affect their vote in favor of the government.

Meanwhile, 64% said it would not influence their decision, and 5% were indifferent.

  • “That is where my fear comes in” – Kofi Amoabeng scared NPP will use money to rig 2024 elections

Former CEO of defunct UT Bank, Captain Prince Kofi Amoabeng (rtd), in a recent interview on Joy News, voiced concerns about potential election rigging by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming 2024 elections.

Amoabeng warned that such actions could result in unrest within the country, citing the NPP’s track record and economic mismanagement as contributing factors to his apprehension.

“I am scared a bit, but I don’t waste my time fearing what is going to happen in the future. I believe in the present,” he stated.

He did not mince words in his assessment of the NPP’s performance, asserting that they had “messed up badly and disappointed Ghanaians.”

However, he also noted that the party possessed significant financial resources, which he implied could be used to influence the electoral process.

“But I am scared in the sense that I think even though it is not difficult to say that the NPP had messed up badly and disappointed Ghanaians, they have a lot of money.

“Stolen or whatever, they have a lot of it. And therefore, they will use it to try to stay in power.

“That is where my fear comes in because I think if there is an obvious win for the NDC and… they can use their money and influence to rig and do all sorts of things, things might explode…so we have to pray,” he added.

The upcoming 2024 general election is shaping up to be a head-to-head contest between the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), led by Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), led by former president John Dramani Mahama.

With President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s tenure set to end in 2025, the NPP is rallying behind a ‘breaking the 8’ campaign, aiming to secure a third consecutive term in office.

Meanwhile, the NDC, under the leadership of Mahama, who is seeking his fourth consecutive presidential bid, is striving to regain power after being voted out in 2016.

You can’t be quiet about it – Mahama to Church leaders on electioneering concerns

Former President John Dramani Mahama has called upon the church, regarded as the moral compass of society, to voice concerns regarding issues surrounding the 2024 electoral process.

Expressing apprehension over various aspects of the Ejusu by-election and the ongoing limited voter registration exercise, he urged the church to address these matters.

In a discussion with the Christian Ecumenical Council on Monday, Mahama highlighted the importance of the church advocating for neutrality and ensuring a transparent and equitable election process.

He emphasized the pivotal role of the church in upholding democratic principles and fostering fairness within the electoral system.

“This is a president who is appointing politically exposed people into positions of trust where they are supposed to be neutral and non-partisan and so people who have been communicators for the party, people who have been IT backstops for the party, today are Commissioners of the Electoral Commission. How do you expect them to be neutral and fair in what is happening?

“People who were patrons of TESCON on campus are today Commissioners of the Electoral Commission. But we want to wake up the conscience of the nation that the right thing must be done so that the outcome can actually be the will of the people.

“So going up to the election, We will continue to play our part. We will raise the red flags anytime we think things are not going very well. And we believe that the church community should also keep an eye and be vigilant in terms of making sure that the right thing is done.”

Ghanaians have been urged to give Dr Bawumia the needed reception during the tour, as he has “shown in these eight years that he has more integrity, discipline, focus, ideas, and solutions than his main opponent [John Dramani Mahama] showed in his 8 years as Vice President and President.”

“It is without doubt that, Dr. Bawumia has proven to be Solutions-oriented and remains committed to finding more solutions to Ghana’s challenges if given the nod as President in the December 2024 elections,” the statement read in part.

Below is the full press statement:

NPP PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE DR. MAHAMUDU BAWUMIA BEGINS NATIONWIDE CAMPAIGN

The 2024 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, will officially kick off his presidential campaign for the December 7 general elections with his first nationwide tour from Monday, 29 April 2024. Dr Bawumia and his campaign team are promising an issue-based campaign, one that will focus on cogent, practical, and tailor-made ideas to deal with issues that are most dear to the Ghanaian people.

Beginning in the Eastern Region, Dr. Bawumia and his campaign team will visit all 16 regions over the next month in this first round of campaigning. On his rounds, he will meet with a wide range of stakeholders, including traditional leaders, the clergy, the youth, traders, drivers, farmers, students and visit businesses, including marketplaces to interact with both traders and consumers. The candidate will
engage the media, hold townhall meetings and continue with his regular stakeholder engagements with the Ghanaian people.

Long before his election on November 4, 2023, and since then, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has been very active in undertaking broad consultations and interactions with various groups across the country. Apart from fulfilling his busy schedule as Ghana’s most active ever Vice President, the 2024 NPP Presidential Candidate and the Party leadership have utilized these recent months to put the structures, personnel, logistics and programmes in place to embark on a very comprehensive, inclusive, constructive, and impactful presidential and parliamentary campaign.

As we enter the active phase of the 2024 Election campaigning, Dr. Bawumia is buoyed up by the strong backing from our party’s grassroots and the growing enthusiasm and confidence resonating throughout the entire party. This burgeoning energy signifies our preparedness for the activities that lie ahead in the upcoming contest.

For us in the NPP, the 2024 race is all down to three key things.

The Battle of Ideas and Character:

As Ghana moves into the next phase of our development, it is more important than ever to elect a leader that holds himself to the highest standards, a man of character, performance, work ethic, vision, programmes, wisdom, decisiveness, self-discipline, integrity, and a very high credibility. It’s indisputable that in this regard, Dr. Bawumia emerges as the most formidable candidate.

Dr. Bawumia has shown in these eight years that he has more integrity, discipline, focus, ideas, and solutions than his main opponent showed in his 8 years as Vice President and President.

It is without doubt that, Dr. Bawumia has proven to be Solutions-oriented and remains committed to finding more solutions to Ghana’s challenges if giving the nod as President in the December 2024 elections.

    The Battle of Records:

There is no denying that there have been global economic challenges, and as a party, we recognize the hardship that this global tragedy has presented to all Ghanaians and the world at large.

It is, however, important to remember and highlight the many achievements of the NPP government in these seven years in constituencies and communities and to not allow anyone to rewrite the history of the previous NDC government. While we are confident, we don’t have to rely on confidence alone; the numbers clearly show that the NPP government has consistently outperformed the NDC government and that it has done so despite historically unmatched global challenges.

As we remind the public of our accomplishments, we clearly understand 2024 is more about the future of our country, and the vision Dr. Bawumia has for her.

    The Battle of Effective Campaigning:

As we set out to campaign for the presidency and the future of this country, we stand united and energized on a common platform.

It cannot be overstated how determined and hardworking our 276 parliamentary candidates and all our campaign teams, especially the Electoral Area and Polling Station campaign teams, are. We rely on them; we stand on their shoulders as we rise together. This party was built on the very idea of unity, and unity is what bonds us together as we build a future of possibilities for Mother Ghana.

The big issue for 2024 comes down to the two personalities. Which of the two main candidates will Ghanaians want as their next leader after 2024? The one who was given his chance and blew it through his incompetence or the one who has shown what he can do even as a Vice President and is now asking to also be given the opportunity to show what he can do as President? We are daring the main opposition Party to come to a debate on the two personalities.

Dr. Bawumia’s Campaign invites the Ghanaian voter to focus on the credibility and weight of the policies of each of the two foremost presidential candidates – Bawumia and Mahama. In the next few months, the Bawumia campaign will humbly but decisively address all major issues facing our nation and how, with the current positive turnaround, he intends to consolidate the gains and tackle the outstanding issues head-on if given the mandate in December.

He will also be asking the crucial questions: Which of the two main candidates is saying anything for the sake of power and who is really plugged into what will deepen the transformation of Ghana? Who is equipped to address the employment needs of our young people, and make our private sector more competitive and profitable going into the future? Which of the two main candidates can guarantee the education of our children and the health of our parents.

These and many more questions will be asked and answered by our candidate, as he asks the Ghanaian people to elect him to the highest office in the land.

The maiden national campaign tour, which runs till the first week of June, will have Dr. Bawumia showcasing his innovative ideas for Ghanaians.

Dr. Bawumia will present what he terms “BOLD SOLUTIONS FOR OUR FUTURE” to the nation.

In a press conference held in Accra on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, the Deputy Chairperson of the EC overseeing Corporate Services, Dr. Bossman Asare, assured the media that the Commission’s infrastructure is adequately equipped to manage the forthcoming elections with integrity and security.

Dr. Asare underscored that despite the absence of several laptops, the electoral process’s integrity remains intact. He conveyed optimism that the 2024 elections would be recognized as Ghana’s most successful electoral event to date.

Regarding the concerns surrounding the missing equipment, Dr. Asare confirmed ongoing collaboration with law enforcement agencies to locate the laptops and hold accountable those responsible.

“What we said was that five laptops are missing. We are working with the security agencies to arrest and prosecute the suspects. We are also hearing people asking how secure are your systems.

“We want to assure each and everyone and the good people of our country that our systems are secured and very robust. We are going to organize another transparent, credible election which will go down as one of the best.

Renowned Ghanaian musician Kwabena Kwabena has affirmed his disinterest in participating in political campaigns for any party in the upcoming elections, stating that he is finished with politics.

During an interview on TV3’s ‘New Day,’ the Aso hitmaker emphasised that this decision extends to refraining from composing songs for any political party.

Controversial radio presenter Blakk Rasta has made a bold declaration, stating that he will leave the country if Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia emerges victorious in the upcoming presidential elections.
