2022 World Cup: See shocking payouts in Ghana’s $14.1M budget

Ghana’s performance at the 2022 World Cup is widely regarded as one of the country’s worst in a major tournament, yet reports suggest an astonishing amount was spent on the team despite their early exit.

According to journalist Fentuo Tahiru, the biggest beneficiaries of the funds were officials and delegates, including a ministry purse holder who received $10,000. He revealed that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) submitted a budget to the ministry covering 54 individuals, each receiving $100,000 in appearance fees.

This group included 28 players, members of the Black Stars management committee, 22 technical team staff, GFA officials, and other personnel. Additionally, Otto Addo’s personal assistant was reportedly paid $20,000 for the tournament.

“Just got hold of a detailed breakdown of the GFA’s budget they presented to the Sports Ministry for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and some of the things on there are interesting. For example, Otto Addo’s personal assistant was paid $20,000. He/she earned the same amount as Ghana’s scouts.

“The ministry’s purse holder was paid $10,000 for doing his job. And the most mind-blowing line item of them all was the $100,000 appearance fee for, wait for it, FIFTY-FOUR (54) people. There were 26 players—meaning beyond the players, 28 others were budgeted to be paid $100,000 each. Who are these people?” Fentuo quizzed in a post on Twitter.

Meanwhile, Alhaji Grusah, who was a management committee member for the World Cup, also alleged that the GFA demanded a 50% kickback of the $100,000 appearance fee paid to him.

“I was the one who made it public that we received $100,000 because people did not want to disclose it. After we were given the money, the GFA wanted a 50% kickback,” he told Sporty FM.

“They called me and said they wanted to share it with some people who did not go to the World Cup, but that was not the original arrangement. If you were born in Ghana, pray to God to give you daily bread because it is not easy,” he said.

In 2022, then-Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, announced a $14.1 million budget for Ghana’s participation in the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

While the official budget did not specify appearance fees allocated to the team and the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Ussif disclosed that Ghana’s group stage campaign alone was projected to cost approximately $8.17 million.

The Black Stars’ World Cup journey ended in disappointment, as they managed just one win in three matches, suffering two defeats and finishing at the bottom of their group.

Ben White’s England exile blamed on 2022 World Cup clash with Steve Holland

Reports suggest that Ben White’s absence from the England squad stems from an incident involving assistant manager Steve Holland.

According to The Telegraph, Holland accused the Arsenal defender of lacking interest in football during an altercation in Qatar.

This led to White making himself unavailable for selection, despite his recent good form.

Despite being a strong candidate for the national team due to his performances, White has not been included in the squad since the 2022 World Cup.

Holland’s alleged comment about White’s attitude towards football reportedly occurred during a conversation comparing the performances of different clubs, which left White feeling embarrassed in front of his teammates.

  • 2022 World Cup: FIFA gave Ghana $7.9m instead of $9m due to $800k debt owed by GFA

2022 World Cup: FIFA gave Ghana $7.9m instead of $9m due to $800k debt owed by GFA

The reduction in Ghana’s 2022 World Cup prize money from $9 million to $7.9 million was reportedly due to outstanding debts owed by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to FIFA.

The debt, totaling over $800,000, includes expenses related to the travel and accommodation of officials, as well as the participation of Ghana’s U-17 and U-20 Women’s national teams in FIFA tournaments.

Additionally, cautions incurred by Ghana contributed to the overall debt. The GFA confirmed the debt and its impact on the prize money, acknowledging the need to settle outstanding obligations to FIFA.

“The GFA was entitled to $9m for placing between 17 and 32 in the FIFA World Cup [in Qatar], subject to the deduction of all outstanding debts on the account of the association at FIFA,” Henry read a portion of a letter he said the FA wrote to the Sports Ministry on June 14, 2023.

He explained that every member association of FIFA has a specific account designated at FIFA for payment of money due it.

“…the association also received $25,000 credit relating to 2018. This was money FIFA owed the GFA as far back as 2018 and FIFA added it to our World Cup prize money for participating in the 2022 World Cup and this was fully contained in the letter we sent to the Minister.

“FIFA has deducted the outstanding debts in the sum of $800,131.23 from 2016 to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, including fees for cautions, flights, accommodation, charges.

“This leaves us with an amount of $8,224, 868.77.  We wish you to remind of you the payment of $300,000 we took from the bank to pay the three Black Stars coaches on behalf of the Ministry for qualifying Ghana to the World Cup against Nigeria per their contract.

“So after all the deductions and what not, the net balance is $7,899,868.77 which is currently to our credit at the bank,” he added.

Henry, however, did not clarify if the loan the FA took to pay the coaches as their performances bonus was deducted by FIFA or GFA deducted it and paid to the bank.

He concluded by saying that, the GFA will publish the details.

2022 World Cup: Ramsdale’s wife suffered miscarriage on flight back to UK

Aaron Ramsdale has courageously shared the story of his wife Georgina experiencing a miscarriage while on a flight back to London in the weeks following last year’s World Cup.

Despite the heartbreak, the Arsenal goalkeeper remarkably played in the North London derby just three days after the tragic event, managing to maintain a clean sheet in a 2-0 victory against Tottenham.

Mikel Arteta extended compassionate leave to Ramsdale during this difficult time. In an interview with The Players’ Tribune, the 25-year-old goalkeeper explained how the Arsenal manager played a supportive role in ensuring the well-being of him and his family.

The England international said: “After the high of climbing to the top of the Premier League table and going off to my first World Cup, my wife and I found out that we were expecting our first child.

“Mikel gave me a few extra days off after the World Cup, so we went on a brief holiday. It was genuinely the happiest time of our lives.

“There’s no easy way to say this but I feel like it’s important that people know. On the flight home, my wife had a miscarriage.

“There’s really no way that I can describe the pain of that six-hour flight back to London, even now.

“I just want people out there to know that they’re not alone if they’re going through it themselves.”

Ramsdale added: “When we got back, I didn’t tell many people what happened. Only my family, my team-mates and of course Mikel.

“He was fantastic about everything. Even in the middle of the title race, with so much pressure on the club, he asked me if I needed some time off to deal with everything.

“Mikel went above and beyond to make sure me and my family were OK. For me, that’s a manager.

“He cares so much about his players and he forever has my respect for how he handled our grief.”

Argentina wins all three FIFA award categories with Messi, Scaloni, and Martinez

In Monday’s opulent ceremony for the Best FIFA Awards in Paris, Lionel Messi, Lionel Scaloni, and Emiliano Martinez completed a clean sweep for Argentina.

Messi, a forward for Paris Saint-Germain, won the Best FIFA Men’s Player award, while Scaloni won Best FIFA Men’s Coach, and Martinez won Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper.

The award period runs from the start of the 2021–22 season until the conclusion of the 2022 World Cup, which saw Argentina snap a 36-year championship drought.

Martinez, who plays for Aston Villa, won the vote ahead of Thibaut Courtois and Yassine Bounou, who represent Real Madrid and Sevilla, respectively. Courtois did, however, make the FIFPro Men’s World 11 squad.

Scaloni was next to pick up an award after seeing off competition from Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola and Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti, who won the LaLiga and Champions League double last season.

La Albiceleste have lost just one of their 23 games since the start of last season, with their solitary loss coming in their opening Qatar 2022 group game against Saudi Arabia.

Messi made it three from three for Argentina by claiming the top prize at the ceremony in the French capital, which started with a poignant tribute to Brazil great Pele.

Madrid striker Karim Benzema and Messi’s PSG team-mate Kylian Mbappe had also been in the running for the award.

Argentina’s fans also claimed the FIFA Fan Award.

Their domination on the men’s side was not quite matched by European champions England in the women’s prizes.

Mary Earps was named the Best FIFA Women’s Goalkeeper and Sarina Wiegman took the Best FIFA Women’s Coach award for a third time.

But Beth Mead was pipped to the Best FIFA Women’s Player accolade by Alexia Putellas, last year’s winner.

Kwesi Appiah explains why Thomas Partey did not make it at 2022 World Cup

Former Black Stars head coach, Kwesi Appiah, has explained the positioning problem that caused Thomas Partey to struggle at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The ex-Black Stars defender explained that, unlike Arsenal, Partey is limited at Black Stars by playing in offensive areas.

He further noted that Arsenal have the best out of the Ghanaian because they use him as a defensive midfielder.

“I would like to use this World Cup. If you look at Arsenal, they use him more like a defensive midfielder, always he plays in front of the defenders. But here we use him as an offensive midfielder who operates on the right side. That means he is enclosed in a small area with the number 10 but at Arsenal, he can move all over the place.”

Thomas Partey, who was having an impressive run at Arsenal before the World Cup, was underwhelming for the Black Stars at the tournament.

The 29-year-old suffered a backlash from Ghanaians as some questioned his commitment to the national team.

  • Messi describes 2022 as ‘year my dream came true’

Messi describes 2022 as ‘year my dream came true’

The World Cup-winning year of 2022, according to Lionel Messi, is one he “will never be able to forget.”

The Argentina captain, who received an extension of vacation following his heroics for Qatar 2022, is scheduled to return to Paris Saint-Germain at the beginning of the upcoming week.

Messi won the Golden Ball award for his seven goals and three assists during Argentina’s run to victory, and at age 35, he finally got to lift the World Cup trophy, which was the pinnacle of his career.

As the year came to an end, Messi marked it with a series of Instagram posts featuring his young family, wife Antonela, and himself.

He wrote: “A year ends that I will never be able to forget. The dream that I always pursued finally came true.

“But that wouldn’t be worth anything either if it weren’t for the fact that I get to share it with a wonderful family, the best one can have, and some friends who always support me and didn’t let me stay on the floor every time I fell.”

Messi’s magical moment will not have been met with great reverence in Paris, given it was France that Argentina beat on penalties in the final after a remarkable 3-3 draw.

Addressing supporters, Messi made a point of thanking those from Barcelona as well as Paris.

He scored a staggering 672 goals during a Barcelona career that ended with a shock move to PSG in August 2021.

“I also want to have a very special memory for all the people who follow me and support me,” Messi wrote. “It is incredible to be able to share this path with all of you.

“It would be impossible to get to where I got without so much encouragement that I received from all the people of my country as well as from Paris, Barcelona and many other cities and countries from which I have been receiving affection.

“I hope that this year has also been wonderful for everyone and I wish you all the health and strength to continue being happy in 2023.”

Messi has reportedly agreed in principle to extend his PSG contract, which expires at the end of this season, and putting the finishing touches to a deal will be a priority for the Ligue 1 club in the coming days and weeks.

He will miss Sunday’s game against Lens, who sit second in the French top flight, seven points behind PSG after 16 rounds of games.

  • Black Stars require new technical direction – Kim Grant

Following the Black Stars’ underwhelming showing in the 2022 World Cup, former Ghana international Kim Grant has pushed for a change in the team’s technical approach.

After losing to Uruguay 2-0 in the opening round of the competition, the Black Stars were out.

After defeating South Korea in their second group game, the Black Stars needed a draw or win against Uruguay to advance to the last 16 stage.

But the team failed to negotiate for points against their ‘enemies’ Uruguay.

“Black Stars need new technical direction, there should be a complete overhaul. There should a 5-10 years plan for development both local and international. Infrastructure, scouting, and sports science should be looked at, video also need to be looked at and how far we will go with everything.

I think we can do a lot much better as you saw for Morocco, Senegal and Cameroon because there is a lot development going on and for that matter there should a strategic plan for the Ghana football for ten years”

Meanwhile, the Black Stars have been ranked the 24th best team at the just ended 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar which was won by Lionel Messi inspired Argentina on Sunday.

Named after Qatar’s international dialling code and the number of shipping containers used in its construction, Stadium 974 was one of seven grounds built for the tournament, while an eighth was extensively redeveloped.

The infrastructure of Stadium 974 can be repurposed for another World Cup or major sporting tournament with similar size or several smaller facilities.

The 44,089-capacity Stadium 974 which sits on Doha’s stunning waterfront presents an array of  multicoloured shipping containers and linked steel frames that can be seen from outside the stadium. It contains toilet facilities, tea kiosks and food stands.

Qatar’s intent derives from its pledge to deliver the first carbon-neutral World Cup. Apart from the seven new stadiums, Qatar has a new airport, metro system, roads and about 100 new hotels. Many have thrown flacks at the government over concerns about the mistreatment of thousands of migrant workers who built the infrastructure.

Because it was the only stadium built for the World Cup without air conditioning, it hosted only evening matches, culminating in Brazil’s last-16 victory over South Korea on December 5.

Deploying shipping containers and recycled steel helped reduce waste generated and construction time compared to the other new venues.

The designers Fenwick Iribarren Architects and the Qatari government said they aimed to avoid building a “white elephant”. It wasn’t meant to be a facility rarely used after a tournament, as has proven the case following the three previous World Cups in Russia, Brazil and South Africa.

A report into Stadium 974 commissioned by FIFA and delivered by emission reduction experts pointed out that reusing existing dismountable structures could be widely replicated. It allows stadiums to be assembled in more central and “easily accessible” locations, thereby reducing “intra-city fan travel” during competitions.

There are indications that the dismantled Qatar stadium will be shipped to Uruguay, where it could host the 2030 World Cup.

  • Kudus Mohammed is a complete player – Inaki Williams

Following his performances in the 2022 World Cup, Ghana attacker Inaki Williams praised teammate Kudus Mohammed, calling him a huge and complete player.

Several European football clubs expressed interest in the 22-year-old after seeing his remarkable performance at the World Cup.

Despite the torrid start of the season, Kudus having his best season with the Dutch giants, with explosive performances in the UEFA Champions League before starring displays at the 2022 World Cup despite Ghana’s early exit.

Inaki, who played with Kudus in September and at the global showpiece, has described the Ajax star as a complete player.

The Athletic Bilbao forward added that the former FC Nordsjaelland must begin to look elsewhere due to his potential.

“I think Ajax is starting to get too small for him and hopefully he will make the leap to a big club soon,” the Athletic Club forward told RadioMarca.

“I would have liked him to have had a Basque family member to be able to bring him to Bilbao because he is a bomb, he is a machine.

“He is very complete and with his young age, he still has a lot of room for improvement.”

Williams reveals he has already told his club mates Kudus is the standout player he has seen in the Black Stars team.

“I was already aware of him before coming because I had heard about him and had seen his goals. When I played the last national team break with him, he already surprised me a lot,” he added.

“To my colleagues [at Athletic Club], when they asked me if someone had impressed me, I always talked about him.”

Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund, Liverpool, and a host of top European clubs are said to tracking the progress of Mohammed Kudus at Ajax and he could be on the move in the summer.

  • The World Cup has attracted over 2 billion viewers – FIFA President

Over two billion people have watched television broadcasts of the 2022 World Cup, according to FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

He said that this number is unprecedented due to the “greatest World Cup group stage ever.”

Gianni Infantino told London-based Sky Sports News that over 51,000 people on average are in Qatar for the tournament.

“It is very promising with the remaining of the World Cup. The matches have been of very great quality in beautiful stadia.

  • Inaki Williams seen at Athletic Bilbao’s camp after Black Stars World Cup exit

Black Stars forward Inaki Williams has been seen in the Athletic Bilbao camp after Ghana was disqualified from the 2022 World Cup.

Following a 2-0 loss against Uruguay, the Black Stars fell out of the tournament after the first round.

After defeating South Korea in their second group game, the Black Stars needed a draw or win against Uruguay to advance to the last 16 stage.

But the team failed to negotiate for points against their ‘enemies’ Uruguay.

Ghana made a strong start to the game, but fell apart after captain Andre Ayew missed a penalty in the 21st minute, a repeat of what happened in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Inaki, who switched nationality in June returned to Spain after the Black Stars were crashed out of the tournament at the group stage.

The forward featured in all three games for the Black Stars as the four-time African champions won only one match at the World Cup.

The 28-year-old will be available for Athletic Club’s mid-season friendly against Udinese before the Cup match against Sestao in Las Llanas

After 14 years, the Real Madrid forward, 31, announced his departure from Manchester United on Instagram.

Hazard, who made his Belgium debut in November 2008 against Luxembourg, has 126 caps for the Red Devils, scoring 33 goals.

The former Chelsea star captained Belgium’s golden generation at the 2018 World Cup when they finished third.
  • World Cup 2022: There was absolutely nothing Morocco could do against Spain – Rodri

Spain’s midfielder Rodri  has criticized Morocco’s strategy ahead of their 2022 World Cup matchup against them on Tuesday in Qatar.

After 120 minutes, there was no way to separate the two teams, and Spain’s three penalties—two of which were beautifully saved by goalie Bounou—were all missed.

That left Hakimi to seal the victory for the North Africans with his fearless penalty kick and ignite joyful scenes in the stadium’s stands.

“Morocco offered absolutely nothing. Without disrespecting them. In the game, they did nothing,” Rodri said after the game.

“They just waited for the counters. They stayed behind and tried to counter us!”

Spain were also knocked out of Euro 2020 on penalties in the semifinals by Italy.

Morocco are the last African side following the exit of African champions Senegal, Ghana, Tunisia and Cameroon.

Coach Walid Regragui’s side are also only remaining Arab team left in the tournament and will face Portugal in the quarterfinals in Qatar.

  • It was a hard decision to accept Black Stars job – Otto Addo

Former coach for Ghana Otto Addo has admitted it was challenging to take the Black Stars coaching position.

Milovan Rajevac was fired as head coach of the Black Stars after Ghana’s disappointing showing at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations [AFCON] in Cameroon, and the talent coach of Borussia Dortmund was confirmed as the team’s new boss.

Addo however masterminded the country’s qualification to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar but has exited the group phase with just three points.

“Before I started to work for the GFA, everybody knew and I said it before that I have a contract with Dortmund and I have to respect that,” he told the Ghana FA website.

“Even to come here, it was difficult and the GFA put in a lot of effort to release me and at the end, they came back themselves to Dortmund to speak to the board.

“And at the end, they decided to release me for this task,” he added.

A 3-2 defeat against Portugal and a win over South Korea by the same margin plus a 2-0 final Group H loss saw the West Africans exit the tournament in Qatar with three points.

  • World Cup 2022: South Korea boss Paulo Bento leaves post after loosing to Brazil

South Korea coach Paulo Bento has disclosed that he is leaving his role following his team’s elimination from the 2022 World Cup in the last 16.

Bento’s side were kicked out of the tournament after a 4-1 defeat by Brazil.

The 53-year-old from Portugal was appointed as South Korea boss in August 2018.

“We just have to think about the future and it will not be with the national team of South Korea,” said Bento.

“I have just announced to the players and to the president of the South Korean federation and this was a decision I had already taken since September that was set in stone.

“Today I have confirmed it and I have to thank them for everything they have done.

“They have given their very best and I have been very pleased and proud to have been their manager.”

Bento’s side beat his native Portugal 2-1 in their final group game to finish second in Group H and progress to the last 16.

  • World Cup 2022: We will come back stronger – Uruguay midfielder Federico Valverde

Midfielder for Uruguay, Federico Valverde has promised that his team will improve despite leaving the 2022 World Cup in Qatar’s group stage.

Captain of Ghana Black Stars, Andre Ayew missed a penalty kick in the 21st minute after Mohammed Kudus was fouled by Uruguay’s Sergio Rochet.

Uruguay went on to win the game 2-0 thanks to goals from Giorgio de Arrascaeta in the 26th and 32nd minutes of the game but it was not enough as teams went out of the tournament.

“Sorry and thank you. “Soccer gives revenge, and I know they will be there as always,” he posted on his twitter page.

“It hurts us the same and more than everyone else, but we will come back stronger.”

Uruguay and South Korea both ended with a zero goal difference, but the side from Asia netted a total of four goals in their three games, with the South American team scoring just the two they managed against the Black Stars.

Uruguay went on to win the game 2-0 thanks to goals from Giorgio de Arrascaeta in the 26th and 32nd minutes of the game but it was not enough as teams went out of the tournament.

“It was sad that they were left out the way they were,” Lionel Messi said.

“It’s football, it happens, and you have to think about what’s coming, just like we do in the Netherlands.”

Uruguay and South Korea both ended with a zero goal difference, but the side from Asia netted a total of four goals in their three games, with the South American team scoring just the two they managed against the Black Stars.

  • World Cup 2022: Otto Addo says there were lots of negatives surrounding his appointment as Ghana coach

Otto Addo has disclosed that there were lots of negatives surrounding his appointment as Ghana coach.

The 47-year-old announced on Friday that he would be leaving his role as Ghana coach following the team’s exit from the 2022 World Cup.

He replaced Milovan Rajevac in February, initially as interim boss, and was given a deal until the end of December.

“I would never understand the mentality of those who think against a human to fail, and there are some humans doing this, I would never understand it,” coach Otto Addo said at a press conference after Ghana’s elimination from the World Cup.

“I don’t fear any of your critics, I’m so long in the game and I’m used to this. For me, it is not a problem, I don’t fear anything, just God.”

‘It’s easy when we lose, the first question is why did you do this and that, but when we win no questions come against me.”

Coach Otto Addo won four games during his time with the Black Stars, beating Madagascar and South Korea in competitive games with the other victories coming against Nicaragua and Switzerland in friendlies.

Ghana crashed out of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar after finishing bottom of Group H with three points.

Black Stars lost two games and won one, amassing three points.

  • ‘No World Cup victory’ – Akufo-Addo’s 2014 tweet resurfaces after Black Stars exit

In the era of tweets being coughed up under the mantra of ‘The internet doesn’t forget,’ politicians are often the subject of social media posts that literally slap them in the face.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is facing one such social media post in the wake of the Black Stars exit from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The Otto Addo-led team fell 2 – 0 to Uruguay in a must-win fixture on December 2, 2022; which result meant the two teams exited the tournament with Portugal and South Korea advancing.

A 2014 tweet by the president has resurfaced as people mock its content relative to recent happenings in the country.

It reads: “No water, no electricity, no petrol, no jobs, no mercy, no World Cup cictory! #Ghana”

The president had urged the team to take revenge on the Uruguayans after a 2010 incident where Luis Suarez, their captain in yesterday’s game thwarted Ghana’s prospect of making history by becoming the first African side to qualify for the semi-finals of the World Cup.

Akufo-Addo has yet to comment on the outcome of the match.

In 2014 when his tweet was made, the then Asamoah Gyan-led Black Stars made a disastrous outing in Brazil when they failed to win a single match yet ‘cooked’ a global spectacle that saw dollars being flown to pay their appearance fees for fears of a boycott.

Ghana ended bottom of Group H with Portugal topping whiles South Korea finsihed second ahead of Uruguay on goal difference – both teams finished with four points apiece.

The Black Stars recorded three points from three games – losing to Portugal and Uruguay and beating South Korea. They scored five goals and conceded seven.

Coach Otto Addo has resigned his position in the post-match press conference.

    Match Report: Uruguay vs. Ghana

The Black Stars of Ghana had one task going into their final Group H fixture at the 2022 World Cup.

Win at all costs, worse case draw against Uruguay and secure passage into the Round-of-16 stage of the competition.

The match was, however, settled with three major incidents in the first half. A penalty miss by Black Stars skipper Andre Dede Ayew, when the score was goalless.

Then Giorgian de Arrascaeta’s two goals for Uruguay which came in quick sucession, consigned the Black Stars to a second World Cup defeat against the South Americans who broke hearts of Africans in 2010.

Their 2 – 0 victory over the Black Stars was, however, not enough to get them through to the next round of the tournament as South Korea beat Portugal 2-1.

With Uruguay in dire need of a third goal to progress to the next round of the World Cup, Suarez was reduced to tears as efforts to score another goal proved futile.

Portugal and South Korea advanced from Group H as Uruguay and Ghana exited the tournament after finished 3rd and 4th respectively.

  • ‘Traitor’: Criticism trails Thomas Partey’s shirt swap with Luis Suarez

After the December 2, 2022 World Cup match between Ghana and Uruguay at the Al Janoub Stadium in Qatar, midfielder Thomas Partey made time to speak with Luis Suarez.

While Suarez led the Uruguayan team to their first victory at the tournament after they drew with South Korea and lost to Portugal, Partey was on the losing team.

Partey and Suarez, who are tied via their affiliation with the Spanish professional team Atletico Madrid, were pictured in a viral photo exchanging shirts.

Suarez joined in 2020 at the same time that the Ghanaian midfielder moved to England to join Arsenal.

The verdict on Twitter over the shirt swap was critique, with the word ‘traitor’ taking being prominent. Those angry at the move say Partey could have swapped the shirts away from public view.

But for others, it was no big deal for players to swap shirts once the game is over.

South Korea deputy coach Sergio Costa believes his side deserved to win against Ghana in their second group game at the 2022 World Cup on Monday.

Black Stars took a 2-0 lead courtesy of goals from Mohammed Salisu and Kudus but two stunning headers in three minutes from Cho Gue-sung levelled the game after 61 minutes.

“The second half was totally different. We had control, possession and opportunities to score but the result at the end is totally unfair,” South Korea’s Costa said after the game.

“Not even a tie would have been fair. We clearly deserved to win. I think we can be very proud of what we did and can count on us in the next match.”

The result leaves South Korea bottom in Group H with only one point following their goalless draw against Uruguay in their World Cup opener.

  • World Cup 2022: We will enter Ghana’s game to win – South Korea coach Paulo Bento

South Korea put on a spirited display in their opening match in Qatar, earning a hard-fought draw against Uruguay.

The Black Stars lost 3-2 to Portugal in the opening game while South Korea held Uruguay to a goalless draw in the other Group H game. Ghana will have to beat South Korea to stand a chance of progressing to the next stage of the competition.

“I know Son because we play in the premier league and we have a strategy to stop him,” Amartey said at a pre-match press conference.

  • Ghana game was very difficult – Portugal defender Raphael Guerreiro admits

After Portugal won 3-2 against Ghana to start their 2022 World Cup campaign on Thursday, Raphael Guerreiro said that playing against Ghana was a challenging task.

After a scoreless first half, Cristiano Ronaldo scored Portugal’s first goal from the penalty spot. Ghana responded well to the goal, though, and captain Andre Ayew scored the equaliser from close range.

Joao Felix converted a beautifully clipped finish for Portugal’s second goal, with substitute Rafael Leao coolly stroked in just seconds after coming on, sealing the victory with two goals in two minutes.
Osman Bukari scored a late consolation goal for Ghana, but the ninth minute of stoppage time almost saw real drama break out.

“In the end, it was very difficult, but the most important thing was the victory. Now let’s focus on the next game,” Guerreiro said after the game

“Yes. If we win the next game, we qualify. We’re on the right track. On the way to being champions? Right.”

The defeat means the Black Stars are bottom of Group H after Uruguay and South Korea played out a goalless draw earlier on Thursday.

The Black Stars will now switch their attention to the match against South Korea on Monday before taking on Uruguay on December 2 at the Education City stadium.

  • Analysis: Five reasons behind Ghana’s 3-2 defeat to Portugal at 2022 World Cup

Portugal defeated Ghana 3-2 thanks to a disputed penalty, a contested goal, and a well-taken goal. Ghana became the first African nation to score at the 2022 World Cup.

Despite their efforts and strong performance, it is largely accepted that the Black Stars were their own worst enemy, with coach Otto Addo and Baba Rahman receiving the harshest criticism.

With several of his rulings, the United States of America referee who oversaw the match did not exactly exalt himself.

As we review the game, GhanaWeb’s Perez Erzoah Kwaw who is in Qatar covering the tournament highlights the five factors that culminated in the defeat.

    Below are the reasons

    Five back without wing backs?

Otto Addo’s decision to start with five backs was not shocking but his choice of full-backs was. Baba Rahman at the left and Alidu Seidu at the right meant that the team struggled offensively. Alidu after a jittery start settled eventually but offered little or nothing offensively.

He is a conservative fullback and wasn’t not able to play the wingback as a Tariq Lamptey or Dennis Odoi would have done.

For Baba Rahman, his performance is rather contrasting. He provided the assist for the Osman Bukari goal and yet his display was also error-riddled which led to one of the goals for Portugal.

    The referee

The outrage from the likes of Gary Lineker, and Darren Bent inter Alia sums up the performance of the referee. The penalty incident was just one of many incidents where he displayed gross bias in the game.

Watching from pitch side, there were countless instances where Ghana coach Otto Addo had to charge at the fourth referee in protest of the center referee’s decision.

Almost every challenge by a Ghanaian player saw a yellow whereas the Portuguese got away with almost every crime they committed.

On more than five occasions, Partey after picking up a ball looked up front for movement of any of the forwards and fullbacks and there was none.

On one occasion he frustratingly instructed Tariq Lamptey to move and occupy a space that had been created after the Portuguese defender moved inside.

The modern game is all about movement and spaces and the Black Stars lacked the inspiration upfront to create or exploit those spaces very well.

Dead the yellow card ‘excuse’, that substitution makes little or no tactical sense.

Bar the three central defenders who held their own against a strong Portuguese forward, Kudus Mohammed was undoubtedly Ghana’s best player.

He started poorly but grew into the game and was adept at fetching the ball from deep with gliding runs that threatened the Portuguese. He was at the center of anything good that happened to Ghana in the attack.

It is not shocking that the team’s performance took a nadir after his strange substitution.

There were periods where he operated as a striker and moments where he was a midfielder and dropped the deal.

Yes he scored but the goal does not paper over the cracks in his play. He struggled and so was Ghana. He may be Ghana’s most capped player now and his experience must count for something but his place as a state must be based on merit and not nostalgia.

  • World Cup 2022: Lawrence Ati-Zigi makes crucial saves despite Black Stars defeat against Portugal

Lawrence Ati-Zigi of St. Gallen, who the  goalkeeper for the Black Stars in their 2022 World Cup opening against Portugal, was crucial to their success.

The shot stopper made his debut for Ghana at the international competition on Thursday, when the Black Stars fell to the European nation 3-2 at the 974 Stadium.

With his second-half penalty giving Portugal the lead, Cristiano Ronaldo made history by becoming the first player to ever score five goals at a World Cup.

Andre Ayew of Ghana then tied the score, but Portugal won and topped Group H despite Osman Bukari’s late winner with to two goals in three minutes from Joao Felix and Rafael Leao.

Even though the Black Stars were defeated, Ati-Zigi made two powerful interventions against Ronaldo.

The Portugal star came from the depths, put the ball a little too far and Zigi intervened to prevent Ghana from a heavy defeat.

With seven minutes remaining, Zigi took center stage again as he emerged victorious in a one-on-one with Ronaldo. However, the Portuguese had started offside.

The 2016 European Champions currently sit top of Group H with three points.

Meanwhile, the defeat means Ghana are bottom of Group H after Uruguay and South Korea played out a goalless draw earlier on Thursday.

The Black Stars will now turn their attention to their upcoming matches against South Korea and Uruguay on November 28 and December 2, respectively.

  • Qatar 1-3 Senegal: Hosts going down with a whimper

After losing to Senegal 3-1, World Cup hosts Qatar are again facing the prospect of leaving the competition early.

After being defeated 2-0 by Ecuador in their initial Group A match, Qatar’s late charge on Friday at Al Thumama Stadium fell short of securing a crucial victory.

Senegal had the upper hand after goals from Boulaye Dia and Famara Diedhiou, so Qatar’s first World Cup goal from Mohammed Muntari gave them hope.

After Senegal had a strong start, the raucous Qatar supporters seated behind Edouard Mendy’s goal were incensed in the 34th minute when Akram Afif was allegedly fouled by Ismaila Sarr. However, referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz rejected the seeming legitimate penalty appeals.

However, just as Qatar had gotten comfortable in the game, Boualem Khoukhi’s catastrophic error was made evident when his clearance fell to Dia, who finished calmly and without error.

Qatar’s hopes were dealt a further blow three minutes into the second half – Diedhiou turning in Ismail Jakobs’ inswinging corner.

Senegal had Mendy to thank for two excellent stops as Qatar searched for a goal back, the Chelsea goalkeeper brilliantly denying Almoez Ali and Ismaeel Mohammad.

Muntari’s superb header four minutes after coming on set up a grandstand finish, yet Dieng swept home to strike the decisive blow and leave Qatar on the brink.

What does it mean? Little hope for hosts

Qatar won the Asian Cup in 2019, and given they had three more years to build ahead of this tournament, they would have been hoping to put on a show on home turf.

However, despite their efforts, the hosts have not yet met the standards needed.

Qatar is on the verge of leaving after defeat. If Ecuador and the Netherlands draw in their other Group A match on Friday, or if the Oranje triumph, they will be eliminated.

Now, the Netherlands’ only chance of moving on is if Qatar can get lucky and defeat the Netherlands in their final group game the following week. Even that might not be enough.

    Senegal find their shooting boots

Senegal and coach Aliou Cisse have been forced to rely on the back-up squad in Qatar since losing star attacker Sadio Mane.

On Friday, they stepped up and delivered, with Dia’s goal ending a stretch of 31 shots without a World Cup goal.

Senegal was more precise this time, scoring three goals on just 0.8xG. (compared to one goal from 0.9 xG for Qatar).

    Blunt Qatar pay the price

Ali’s shot, saved by Mendy, midway through the second half was Qatar’s first attempt on target of the tournament.

They ultimately finished with three efforts on target in this match, but the lack of composure in front of goal – and the shortage of creativity to get there on many occasions – was evident.

    Key Opta stats

    – Qatar have become the first host nation to lose two matches in a single group round of a World Cup.
    – Senegal scored three goals in a World Cup match for a second time, after a 3-3 draw with Uruguay in 2002. This was also the first time they won a World Cup game by a margin of more than one goal, in what was their 10th match at the finals.
    – Qatar became only the third host nation to concede three goals in a single group-stage game, after South Africa in 2010 and Russia in 2018 (both 3-0 defeats to Uruguay).
    – Senegal became the first African side to beat the host nation at a World Cup; all of the previous four instances of an African side facing the hosts had seen them lose by an aggregate 12-2 score.
    – Aged 29 years and 345 days, Diedhiou became the oldest Senegal player ever to score at the World Cup.

  • Qatar 2022: Retired English referee Mike Dean questions officiating in Ghana’s loss to Portugal

Mike Dean, a retired English official, has questioned the refereeing in Ghana’s 3-2 defeat to Portugal on Thursday in the 2022 World Cup.

Mohammed Salisu was given a penalty by American referee Ismail Elfath for making the least amount of contact with Cristiano Ronaldo, who has now reached two World Cup semifinals.

Elfath should have been given the opportunity to review the event at the pitch side Video Assistant Referee (VAR) monitor, according to Mike Dean, but that was not done.

Even though he normally supports officials, he claimed he could not defend the decision to award Portugal the penalty.

“The VAR, in my opinion, should have gotten involved, should’ve invited the referee over to have a look at it,” Mike Dean told beIN Sports after the game.

He continued, “I like to back referees all the time, but you can’t support stuff like that. You can’t defend the undefendable.

“For me, it should’ve been overturned, he should’ve gone to the screen…100% it was wrong.”

Ghana head coach Otto Addo also described the penalty as a gift from Ismail Elfath while expressing his disappointment at the performance of the referee.

Ghana will shift focus to Monday’s encounter against South Korea in their second Group H game.

  • World Cup 2022: It’s unfortunate – Tariq Lamptey on defeat against Portugal

Tariq Lamptey, has voiced his disappointment over Ghana’s loss to Portugal in the 2022 World Cup opening match.

The Black Stars lost to the European powerhouses 3-2 on Thursday, and the Brighton and Hove Albion defender came on as a substitute.

“We worked hard in training, we believed in ourselves and we knew we could get something positive from the game but unfortunately we couldn’t get anything from the game”

“We will take the positives and build on it for the next game” he said.

  • World Cup 2022: Alidu Seidu reacts to Portugal defeat

Ghana’s defender Alidu Seidu, has responded to the Black Stars’ 2022 World Cup loss to Portugal on Thursday.
The Clermont Foot defender stated the club will push forward despite losing to Portugal in a post.

.He wrote, “We keep pushing, appreciate your support constantly.
With three points, the 2016 European Champions are presently in first place in Group H.
In the meantime, the loss places Ghana at the bottom of Group H following Thursday’s goalless stalemate between Uruguay and South Korea.

The Black Stars will now concentrate on their upcoming games on November 28 against South Korea and December 2 against Uruguay.

  • World Cup 2022: I tried speaking with referee Elfath after the match – Ghana coach Otto Addo

Black Stars head coach Otto Addo said he tried speaking with referee Ismail Elfath after their 3-2 defeat to Portugal in their 2022 World Cup opener on Thursday.

The 47-year-old was furious that referee Elfath pointed to the spot in the 63rd minute and argued that Ronaldo had actually fouled Mohammed Salisu.

After the goalless first half, Ronaldo opened the scoring for Portugal via the penalty spot but Ghana improved after the goal and scored the equalised through skipper Andre Ayew from close range.

Portugal responded with two goals in two minutes to seal the points – Joao Felix converting a delightfully clipped finish and substitute Rafael Leao coolly stroking in just seconds after coming on.

Osman Bukari headed in a late consolation for Ghana and there could have been real drama in the ninth minute of stoppage time.

“I tried. I asked some people from FIFA if I could talk briefly to the referee in a calm and quite way. But they said he is in a meeting and so it’s not possible,” coach Addo said after the game.

“I think they do match analysis with their instructor after the match so they go through the match. But surely, may be sometimes you could have some minutes for the coach.”

The defeat means Black Stars are bottom of Group H after Uruguay and South Korea played out a goalless draw earlier on Thursday.

The Black Stars will now switch their attention to their attention to the match against South Korea on Monday before taking on Uruguay on December 2 at the Education City stadium.

  • Meet the four African presidents who are in Qatar for the 2022 World Cup

It is a global football season yet only 32 teams from across the world are in Qatar for the 2022 World Cup.

The spotlight is on the various teams – players, technical staff – the officiating department – referees, assistants, Video Assistant Referees, technical analysts – as well as the media covering the event.

Then there are the fans who are on ground or enjoying the tournament online. In all of this, there is also the weight that presidential diplomacy plays in the games.

Over twenty world leaders converged in the Al Bayt Stadium where the opening ceremony and first match between hosts Qatar and Ecuador took place, the hosts losing by a historic two – nil scoreline.

This article looks at the African Presidents who have had one reason or the other to be in Qatar specifically because of the tournament.

The most recent to arrive in Qatar is Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of Ghana, who arrived on November 24, 2022 and is expected to meet the Ghana national team, the Black Stars to motivate them before watching their match against Portugal later.

Presidents Paul Kagame of Rwanda and Macky Sall of Senegal were officially invited by the Qatari government to be part of the opening ceremony on November 20.

Whereas Kagame returned to Kigali, Macky Sall stayed on and watched the November 21 game between Senegal and the Netherlands, which the African champions lost after conceding two late goals in the cagey encounter.

President George Manneh Weah of Liberia, had announced his trip to Qatar weeks ahead. He informed the Senate that he would spend some nine days in Qatar.

He was at the stadium on November 21 to watch the game between the United States and Wales. His interest being to watch his American son in action at a tournament he dreamed of but never had the pleasure of playing in despite being a one-time world best player.

In the said match, Timothy Weah grabbed the first goal for the US with Gareth Bale snatching a late equalizer for the Welsh.

Africa’s other reps aside Ghana and Senegal are Cameroon, Tunisia and Morocco.

Which other African president could likely travel to Qatar for the World Cup? GhanaWeb will keep tracking.

  • World Cup 2022: Morocco coach Regragui hails fans after Croatia draw

Morocco head coach Walid Regragui has praised fans for their support as they drew goalless with Croatia in their 2022 World Cup opener on Wednesday.

A well-drilled Morocco held the runners-up four years ago to a draw at Al Bayt Stadium.

Only four players from their final defeat by France in 2018 started this game and they lacked an attacking spark throughout, but came closest through Nikola Vlasic’s toe-poked effort. Morocco were impressive, but failed to create clear-cut opportunities.

“We feel that we are home and I am happy to be in Qatar.”

“The Moroccan and Arab fans in the stands supported us and gave us strength when we felt tired,” the former Wydad Casablanca boss said after the game.

Morocco’s draw means African sides are yet to win a match at this year’s World Cup after Senegal lost to the Netherlands and Tunisia held Denmark to a goalless draw on Monday and Tuesday respectiively.

  • Portugal are favourite on paper – Andre Ayew admits

Black Stars captain, Andre Dede Ayew has admitted that Portugal are theoretically the favourite in their 2022 World Cup opening game against Ghana on Thursday, November 24, 2022.

According to Ayew, Portugal are the better side in terms of quality, and he added that the Black Stars will be playing against a tough opponent.

Despite his admission about Portugal, the most capped Ghanaian player stated that they will go all-out to surprise the 2016 European champions on Thursday.

“We all know that if we’re going to get into this game Portugal are the ones who are favourites on paper.

“But after, we have to show on the field that what is on paper is not what will happen on the pitch, so we are ready. We are ready, and we know we are playing a big side that were European champions some years back and have top players,” he said in a post-match interview.

Dede Ayew continued that Black Stars are ready to complicate things for the Portuguese.

“But we believe in ourselves and we know what is ahead of us and we going to do everything to make it very difficult for them,” he reiterated.

Ghana will come off against Portugal on Thursday, November 24, 2022, at Stadium 974 (Rass Abou Aboud).

The two will meet for the second time at the World Cup. In their first meeting in 2014, Portugal won 2-1.
