  • Volta group optimistic of resounding victory for Akufo-Addo on Dec 7

The Volta Region Resource Group, an organ of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is optimistic the President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo would win the December polls.

The group said the fortunes of the NPP in the region had improved with the party setting eyes on at least three seats.

Mr King David Akpabli, Secretary of the Group, said this at a press conference in Ho to launch its campaign dubbed “All Hands On Deck” in the 18 Constituencies of the Volta region.

The campaign aimed to equip the electorates with appropriate information on the government’s track record in terms of development projects, programmes and policies.

He said President Akufo-Addo performed better than his contender, Mr John Mahama, flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“Akufo-Addo will continue to put smiles on the faces of Ghanaians and that the NDC is not an alternative, and does not deserve any second chance.”

Mr Akpabli said though the party inaugurated various campaign taskforces, the VRG All Hands on Deck team would go an extra mile to garner at least 25 per cent of the votes for President Akufo-Addo and the party to stay in power.

He said: “The President’s frequent strategic visits and the good job have endeared him to the hearts of the many Voltarians.”

The many social interventions are changing the narrative and perception of the people, he added.

The Secretary said the group had taken its activities to social gatherings, funeral grounds, Churches, market centres and identifiable institutions, adding “we are gaining grounds.”

He observed that President Akuffo-Addo was God’s anointed, a performer and a beacon of hope for African politics and must be retained to take the fortunes of the country a notch higher.

Mr Akpabli appealed to Ghanaians to vote for the NPP and a peaceful election, before, during and after the December polls.

  • Election 2020: Crime rate going down Kan-Dapaah

National Security Minister Albert Kan-Dapaah has blamed political opponents for the heightened sense of insecurity in the country.

Some security analysts and members of the public have questioned the security preparedness of the country for the December polls given recent armed robbery cases and other violent crimes.

But addressing Parliament today, the National Security Minister accused political opponents of deliberately fanning a false sense of insecurity for political gains.

Mr. Kan Dapaah argued crime rates are rather down as he warned troublemakers of the readiness of the security agencies to neutralize them.

On the activities of the Volta Separatist groups, the minister fended off allegations of intelligence failure

He said “there also seems to be a deliberate attempt by certain individuals to create a false notion of rising insecurity in the country. The facts however run counter to this false notion, for example, evidence suggests a reduction in crime rates in the country.”

“These false notions of insecurity stems from the deliberate politicization of issues of national security in the country and I think it has become more pronounced as we approach the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections. An assessment of recent developments reveals that the false notion of insecurity is fueled by some politicians.”

He added that these politicians at one moment openly threaten violence should they lose the election and at another express concern about rising insecurity in the country. And I think Mr speaker, this is unacceptable and must be condemned in no uncertain terms irrespective of where it is coming from.”

But minority leader Haruna Iddrisu rubbished allegations of the minister.

The Tamale South MP warned the NDC will not accept any intimidation from the security personnel who operate in the name of national security on election day.

He charged government to leave deployment of personnel for election purposes in the hand of the IGP so he can be held accountable for whatever goes wrong so as to avoid a repetition of Ayawaso West.

Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu asked for a political consensus if personnel from national security are to be barred from electoral duties since such deployments have always existed.

  • You’ve no moral right to complain about ‘high’ filing fees – Kabila tells political parties

Former acting General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), James Kwabena Bomfeh Jnr., popularly known as Kabila has asked political parties to cease criticizing the Electoral Commission (EC) over the increment in filing fees.

The EC opened online nominations for Presidential and Parliamentary Candidates for the December 7, 2020 elections.

According to the Commission, this year’s filing fee for presidential aspirants would be GH¢100,000, while that for parliamentary candidates would remain unchanged at GH¢10,000

The decision by the EC has however incurred the wrath of some political parties.

Contributing to a panel discussion on Peace FM’s morning show ‘Kokrokoo’, Kabila who thinks the parties have no moral right to complain, recalled how he and other members of the CPP complained before the filing fee was reduced to GHC40, 000 for him to contest the General Secretary position in the CPP.

“Personally I don’t think the fee is high . . . how much did we charge in our internal contests? You (CPP) collected 100,000 internally and you are crying against the Electoral Commission? What moral right have you got to do that,” he queried.

  • Private schools welcome Mahamas promise on Free SHS inclusion?

The Conference of Heads of Private Second-Cycle Schools (CHOPSS) has welcomed the promise by former President John Mahama to include private schools in the Free SHS policy if he wins power.

According to CHOPSS, the move will increase options for students when choosing which secondary school to attend.

The opposition NDC has promised to expand coverage of the Free SHS policy if they win the December polls. Private schools are currently not covered by the policy leading to several complaints from private school owners.

In a statement signed by its General Secretary Joseph Dzamesi Wednesday, CHOPSS said: “We believe that this is the only way the problem of access to secondary education, which gave rise to the double-track system of education can be solved. We believe that a public-private partnership of this nature is a win-win for the Ghanaian government, Ghanaian children, and Ghanaian educational entrepreneurs. This policy will protect many of the 335 private senior high schools in Ghana and protect over 10,000 jobs in the private secondary educational sector.

“It will give more options to Ghanaian children as they can choose to attend a private school near them or a public school. Finally, it will reduce the pressure on government in its attempt to build additional infrastructure in public schools”.

It added: “We posit that just as government partners with private health institutions to ensure that a patient can visit either a public or a private health facility when sick and, through the NHIS, the bill is paid, the same way the government should allow the Free SHS grant to follow the student if that student opts to attend a private or public SHS. We reject the suggestion that all mainstream private high schools or all private schools that do not charge fees in dollars are substandard schools.

“We have private schools that have better facilities than public schools and that have over the years outperformed public schools. We also reject the attempt to suggest that it is unconstitutional for government to partner with private schools to provide educational access to Ghanaian children. We believe that there are common grounds that are absolutely constitutional that can be reached to allow for partnerships with Private Senior High Schools”.

  • ECs filing fee not only discriminatory but unlawful – Kwaku Azar

Law professor and activist, Professor Kwaku Asare, popularly known as Kwaku Azar has taken on the Electoral Commission (EC) over the cost of filing fee it announced for presidential aspirants and parliamentary aspirants.

The law professor says the cost is not only discriminatory but unlawful.

In a post on his Facebook page, Kwaku Azar said government agencies are fully funded to provide services to the public hence they cannot just charge the public whatever they want.

He asserts that the EC and other agencies must publish regulations, which must be brought before parliament for vetting.

    Read his full post below

Government agencies are fully funded to provide services to the public. As such, they cannot just charge the public whatever they want for whatever reasons.

ACT 983 provides for the regulation of their fees and charges and for related matters.

Under the Act, to charge at all, first these agencies, including the EC, must publish regulations, which, of course, has to be placed in Parliament where it undergoes vetting.

CHRAJ cannot wake up and start asking us to pay ?50,000 per complaint to weed out non-serious complaints any more than the EC can ask general election candidates to pay ?100,000 to get on the ballot.

It has to publish regulations, which Parliament, under pressure from the people, will reject.

Some say the EC can charge whatever it wants to weed out non-serious candidates.

I say show me someone who voluntarily hands over his or her hard earned ?100,000 to the EC, without asking for the authority of the EC to impose that tax or penalty, and I will show you someone who will be a bad steward of the public purse.

By the same token, the EC cannot levy a registration tax on voters to weed out non-serious ones.

The EC is not a tax collector, a for profit-entity, a seriousness inspector or in any way set up to impose charges, let alone excessive ones, on general election candidates.

Rather, its task includes making sure political parties timely file their financial reports and making same available to the public for vetting.

Its task is to get dirty money out of our politics not exacerbate the problem.

In short, fiats to impose fees are not just corruption-enhancing and discriminatory against the poor, they are also unlawful.

The Electoral Commission (EC) will today, Monday, September 14, 2020 hold a media briefing on the procedures for the filing of nominations and receipts for the 2020 General Election.

Already, the Commission has indicated that for the first time in the country’s electoral history, presidential and parliamentary aspirants would not physically pick nomination forms from the offices of the EC but would have to download the forms from its website for processing.

The Commission said the move was part of the safety protocols for curbing the spread of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

Per Ghana’s electoral laws, aspirants seeking to contest parliamentary and presidential elections are to file their nominations with the EC.

Over the years, aspirants or their representatives would visit the offices of the EC at the district, regional or national levels to pick the nomination forms, which were completed and filed at a later date.

“The Ministry, in collaboration with the National House of Chiefs, has also begun the process of digitizing records of the National House of Chiefs, particularly records in the National Register of Chiefs,” he added.

Towards addressing the challenges of chieftaincy disputes, President Akufo-Addo revealed further that “Government, through the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, has arranged to provide the funds that will increase the number of sittings of Judicial Committees of Regional Houses to hasten the adjudication of pending issues, in order to bring closure to many outstanding disputes that continue to generate tension”.

Again, to reduce conflicts and establish areas of customary jurisdiction and allegiance, the Chieftaincy Ministry, together with the National House of Chiefs has delineated traditional areas of paramountcies, with the President also appealing to the Chiefs to help Government streamline the administration of lands in the country, leading to an efficient and well-functioning regime of titling, fixing of boundaries and ownership tracing.

“The Chieftaincy Ministry has also instituted a programme to have courses in Chieftaincy development, comprising lectures, seminars and other activities, aimed at building the capacity of Chiefs and all persons with interests in the Chieftaincy institution. I applaud this initiative,” he added.

Currently, the NDC is being represented by human rights lawyer Xavier-Sosu.

Telecommunication companies in Ghana say unsolicited messages from political parties are not from them.

According to the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications (GCT) in a press statement copied to GhanaWeb, the Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) are politically neutral and that their “policies and principles prohibit the promotion of any political party”.

“As an industry, we are committed to working with all stakeholders to ensure the continued growth of our democracy,” the statement added.

The GTC explained that the political parties mostly rely on content providers to forward bulk SMS transfers on their behalf.

The Chamber urged customers who receive these messages and would wish to unsubscribe from UECs of any kind to type STOP, press the enter key for one space, type sender’s name, and press send to the number from which the message or call came. This will stop the UEC from being received.

“If the UECs persists, contact your service provider to omit you from the promotional list and the Regulator as last resort,” the statement added.

  • Election 2020 will be fought on records, not tribalism – Bawumia

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia says this year’s election will be contested based on track records and competencies, not on ethnocentric comments that divide the people.

He, therefore, condemned former President Mahama for endorsing an article which sought to whip up tribalism, and asked the NDC Flagbearer to apologise unreservedly.

Former President Mahama endorsed a disparaging and tribal-laced article written by Isaac Adongo, an NDC Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central, by repeating it on his official Facebook page.

Many Ghanaians have since condemned Mr Mahama for highlighting the tribal-laced article.

Addressing a durbar of Chiefs and people of Gushegu on Sunday, Dr. Bawumia expressed surprise that Mr Mahama endorsed a statement that had the potential of causing disunity adding “Ghana is a united country, which has moved beyond the kind of divisive, and tribal politics by the former President.

The article referred to some members of the ruling government as “Akyem Sakawa boys”.

“How do you take a whole tribe and refer to them as Sakawa boys?” Dr. Bawumia asked.

He said Ghana had gone beyond tribalism and the Presidency cannot be won based on whipping up tribal sentiments to divide the people.

The Vice President noted that President Akufo-Addo was widely acknowledged as a champion of peace, having played a significant role in the resolution of the protracted conflicts in Dagbon.

“The Paramount Chief of Gushegu, Gushe-Naa, Abdulai Shitobu, on his part, praised President Akufo-Addo for his tireless efforts in bringing peace and harmony in Dagbon…”Dagbon owes Nana Akufo-Addo a depth of gratitude.”

“Nana Addo is an Akyem man, who has brought peace to Dagomba land through his effort, along with others, so we’re deeply grateful to him.”

  • John Mahama sends passionate letter to his countrymen and women about his 2020 return

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has revealed that his decision to take another bite at the presidency, was not taken lightly, but was made “out of a sense of urgency”.

In an emotional letter to his fellow countrymen and women, ahead of his party’s manifesto launch today, Monday, August 7, 2020, ex-President John Dramani Mahama, insists “no country can aspire to become developed; no society can be truly resilient in the face of crisis and adversity without a solid economic and social infrastructure”.

“In all honesty, I didn’t take the decision to run for a second term as President neither easily, nor quickly. I didn’t jump into it. I did it out of a sense of urgency, after I began to contemplate more and more thoroughly about our vulnerabilities as a nation”.

The launch of the NDC’s “Peoples’ Manifesto” is billed to come off at 6pm today, and will be aired live on all major TV, radio and online platforms from the University of Professional Studies Accra.

A statement from James Agyenim-Boateng, Campaign Spokesperson issued yesterday announced that after months of wide consultations with various interest groups and individuals across the country, all was set for the launch of the NDC manifesto.

The document he said “represents the vision and programmes of the John Mahama-Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang ticket for the 2020 elections”, and “addresses the felt needs of people”.

Ahead of the launch, both Mr Mahama and his running mate, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, have been talking about the manifesto.

On a campaign tour to Kwasiadukrom in the Bodi Constituency of the Western North Region, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, said it was high time the will of the people was brought to mainstream governance, hence the NDC’s People’s Manifesto.

She intimated that the times when leaders sat in Accra and drafted manifestos for the people, are long gone.

“We must make sure the exact cry of the people are incorporated into policy documents to ensure the people benefit directly”.

She pointed out that, ‘The Big Push’ agenda in the manifesto, for instance, when implemented will ensure job creation for many people, adding the youth will be given hands on skills training and projects started by the NDC government, which have been abandoned by the current government, will be completed.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, specifically called on women to rally behind the John and Jane ticket, especially as issues affecting women and children are on top of the NDC’s agenda, adding “This is our time as women and we must take advantage of the opportunity”.

With a very passionate tone, Mr Mahama addressed his “brothers and sisters”, saying “you offered me the humbling chance to serve you from the highest offices in Ghana first as Vice-President, for four years, and then as President for another four years. For this, I will forever be grateful, and I will fight for your wellbeing, for your hopes and for your rights with all my strength for the rest of my life”, adding “but since I have already been there, why run again? I know many of you ask this question sometimes openly, sometimes in silence. Why run again? It is a fair question, and it deserves a fair, personal answer”.

“To create sustainable and ever-growing prosperity something we all deserve it requires building a robust social and economic infrastructure, one that supports creativity, innovation and the production of high value-added products and services”.

“This is precisely why, during my Presidency, I took aggressive steps to develop and consolidate our healthcare infrastructure, our educational infrastructure, our transport infrastructure and our digital infrastructure. This is the only way to build a resilient nation. Without creating and consolidating a developed infrastructure, no nation can resist global shocks” he explained.

“Unfortunately, this current government has refused to continue on this path and therefore failed to make our nation less vulnerable and more resilient”, the ex-President noted.

“I know how to do it, part of it I’ve already accomplished, and since I know how to do it and the current government doesn’t, I feel I have the moral duty to ask for a second term. This is not about me, it’s about Ghana and Ghanaians, adding “This is what today’s manifesto is about”.

Below is what Mr Mahama wrote

    My brothers and sisters,

On Monday, we will launch our manifesto for 2020.

Let me take this opportunity to offer some personal reflections on the political substance of this manifesto.

You offered me the humbling chance to serve you from the highest offices in Ghana first as Vice-President, for four years, and then as President for another four years. For this, I will forever be grateful, and I will fight for your wellbeing, for your hopes and for your rights with all my strength for the rest of my life.

But since I have already been there, why run again? I know many of you ask this question sometimes openly, sometimes in silence. Why run again? It is a fair question, and it deserves a fair, personal answer.

In a sense, our manifesto will provide the answer, but it will be a collective answer, coming from all the fabulous NDC members and supporters, men and women, who participated in its formulation.

In all honesty, I didn’t take the decision to run for a second term as President neither easily, nor quickly. I didn’t jump into it. I did it out of a sense of urgency, after I began to contemplate more and more thoroughly about our vulnerabilities as a nation.

No country can aspire to become developed; no society can be truly resilient in the face of crisis and adversity without a solid economic and social infrastructure.

To create sustainable and ever-growing prosperity something we all deserve it requires building a robust social and economic infrastructure, one that supports creativity, innovation and the production of high value-added products and services.

This is precisely why, during my Presidency, I took aggressive steps to develop and consolidate our healthcare infrastructure, our educational infrastructure, our transport infrastructure and our digital infrastructure. This is the only way to build a resilient nation. Without creating and consolidating a developed infrastructure, no nation can resist global shocks.

Unfortunately, this current government has refused to continue on this path and therefore failed to make our nation less vulnerable and more resilient.

Let me give you just one example: access to electricity. In 2012, 69.2% of Ghanaians had access to electricity. In 2016, when I left office after my first term as President, 79.3% of Ghanaians had access to electricity. A 10 percentage points increase in 4 years. When I left the office, I was confident that a new government will deliver 90%, if not 100% access to electricity in the next four years.

However, the NPP government increased overall access to electricity from 79.3% to only 82.3%, a mere 3 percentage points increase.

It is our sacred mission to turn Ghana into an advanced nation as soon as possible! It is our moral obligation to be bold and to aim for greatness!

“Good enough” is no longer good enough! To prosper and thrive, we need fundamental change! We need to set our standards and expectations far higher than “good enough”! If we settle for “good enough”, we settle for a slow death of our very soul and of our pride.

I run for President because I want to leave a legacy: a solid infrastructure, with 100% access for all. With this legacy, we will build a truly developed Ghana, on a par with the advanced nations.

I know how to do it, part of it I’ve already accomplished, and since I know how to do it and the current government doesn’t, I feel I have the moral duty to ask for a second term. This is not about me, it’s about Ghana and Ghanaians.

This is what Monday’s manifesto is about.

This is why I encourage all of you to watch the launch ceremony.

God bless Ghana! God bless each and every one of you!

  • Vote massively for politicians who care for us Motor Riders Association to members

Public Relations Officer (P.R.O) of the Motor Riders Association, Setsoafia Pascal has entreated members as well as their customers to vote for politicians who have shown interest in making the commercial motorbike transport services, popularly known as Okada business thrive.

This comment comes after former President John Dramani Mahama while addressing the chiefs, people and party supporters at Kpando in the Volta Region on Friday, August 21, 2020, announced that he will legalise the Okada business should he win the December 7 polls.

Addressing the media on Wednesday, August 26, 2020, Mr Pascal called on “all members, their dependents, our clients and everyone who values the service we render to show up and vote massively for the politicians who have shown they care and not those who say one thing in opposition and another in government.”.

He added that legalising and regulating the okada business will create an added opportunity for the state to fund its numerous projects promised Ghanaians.

Though many people, including members of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), have poured scorn on the legalisation of the okada business because they think it is not sustainable and safe, others, on the other hand, believe it would create employment for the youth.

The P.R.O at the press briefing requested that government sets up a safety and training school to train and license Okada riders just as it is for the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA).

“This could provide an opportunity for local authorities to levy a small daily fee for our members, like what happens for others means of transport. Setting up a safety and training school which will train and license our members could also help raise funds like what the DVLA does for cars and trucks,” he said.

  • NDC is committed to peaceful elections – Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama, the Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has reiterated the Party’s position to ensure a peaceful election in December.

He pledged the NDC would not use any vigilante group to cause mayhem on December 7 and urged supporters in the various communities to protect the ballot boxes to guarantee the integrity of the ballot.

“We commit the ballot boxes into your hands so that you ensure that nobody comes to destroy them at your polling stations because your vote must count,” he added.

Mr Mahama urged Ghanaians to turn out in their numbers on the Election Day “to vote for respect for all ethnic groups, inclusion, unity, jobs and tolerance by voting for the NDC,” a statement copied to the Ghana News Agency said on Tuesday.

Mr Mahama made the remark in an address to the chiefs and people of Mepe in the North Tongu Constituency as part his four-day tour of the Volta Region, the statement, signed by Mr James Agyenim-Boateng, Spokesperson of the NDC Campaign Team, said.

  • NDC man contests Zanetor Rawlings as an independent candidate

Member of Parliament (MP) for Klottey Korle Constituency, Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, may have her votes slashed in the 2020 general elections, as a leading member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has decided to contest the race as an Independent candidate.

Alhaji Danjumah Alhassan as he’s known, says he is going to contest the sitting lawmaker in the impending elections because she has failed the people according to his assessment of her performance.

According to him, Dr Agyeman-Rawlings, cannot boast of any specific developmental initiative in the Klottey Korle Constituency, since she took over as a Member of Parliament in the Constituency.

Alhaji Danjumah Alhassan, said what even beats his imagination is the fact that the daughter of Ghana’s former President, Jerry John Rawlings is not an open Member of Parliament who is easily approached by the people, hence making the NDC unpopular in the constituency.

He noted that the MP, apart from being incompetent, since taking over the seat has never given out funds to the executives in the constituency to organize campaigns in order for the NDC to win power.

On the back of the many ills by Zanetor Rawlings, Alhaji Danjumah Alhassan believes he needs to go into the race as an Independent candidate to save the people of Klottey Korle or else they will be left behind in terms of development.

When asked if he’s not going contrary to the party’s constitution, he told Tema-based Green FM in an interview monitored by MyNewsGh.com that “I’ve served the NDC since 1992 but it has always been monkey dey work baboon dey chop so I don’t even care about the repercussions. I honestly don’t care what will happen. I’ve taken my decision and nothing is stopping me.”

  • Why can’t we agree to suspend 2020 elections? – Kwesi Pratt

Seasoned journalist, Kwesi Pratt has called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and former President John Dramani Mahama to come to a consensus over the upcoming general elections due to the threat of COVID-19 in the country.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) has had a devastating impact on Ghana as the country’s case count keeps increasing on almost a daily basis.

Ghana began with two (2) cases of the disease in March and four months later, it has shot up to over 25000 cases. Specifically, Ghana has recorded 25,252, 21,397 recoveries and 139 deaths.

Despite the spike in the COVID-19 cases, the Electoral Commission (EC) continues to conduct the voters’ registration exercise aimed at compiling a new register for the 2020 elections.

Some political figures and Ghanaians have raised red flag over the ongoing exercise, arguing that the EC is risking the lives of citizenry and called on the Commission to suspend the exercise.

The EC also holds that now is the opportune time for the exercise and postponing it might affect the upcoming elections or as some political analysts indicate, it might call for the old voters’ register to be used for the elections which is impossible because it will have judicial consequences.

Making his submissions on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’, Kwesi Pratt called on the election stakeholders to prioritize the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic over any other thing.

He told host Kwami Sefa Kayi that the disease is “an emergency of extraordinary proportions. It’s a national and international emergency of extraordinary proportions”.

According to him, since Ghana is not in normal times, it is prudent to set aside the 1992 constitution which makes provision for the Presidential elections to be held on December 7th every four years.

He admonished the leaders in the country to take critical decisions to protect the people of Ghana.

“This constitution, we can even decide to set it aside . . . If, as a people, we cannot think beyond our political parties, then we should die. The reality is that by 7th January, 2021, if we don’t vote, there will be no government. There will be a vacuum. When you look into the constitution, the constitution does not make adequate provision for that vacuum. So, we should have started thinking long ago.”

“Are we not the ones who made the constitution? So, if we can get to a point where Parliament, all political parties, Chiefs and all the national institutions will come together and we all have a unanimous decision; why can’t we make an interim arrangements?” he questioned.

“But this issue of Mahama wanting to be a President and this or that person doesn’t want to abdicate his seat and so on, is this what is going to guide us face this pandemic? If that is the issue, then let stay in the pandemic and die,” he fumed.

  • Ghanaians are eager to vote in the 2020 elections, Ghana Election Poll finds

Amid the coronavirus pandemic and the fast-rising cases recorded in the country, Ghanaians have expressed massive interest in taking part in the December 2020 general elections to vote for a president and parliamentary representatives.

The first wave of results of the Ghana Election Poll conducted online via the renowned market research firm MSI-ACI from May 1 through to June 30 finds a growing majority of Ghanaians plan to vote in the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections.

Overall, 78% of respondents who were of the voting age (18) more than three-quarters responded with a resounding “Yes” to taking part in the elections while 10% said “No” to taking part in the elections. 12% were on the fence.

Out of the weighted sample of 792 adults, both males and females plan to vote in the upcoming elections by 83.4% and 73.2% respectively. Respondents between the ages of 25 and 29 years appear to be less enthusiastic for the upcoming elections compared to other age groups.

The Greater Accra Region recorded the highest number of would-be voters; however, a larger number of respondents did not plan to vote. Meanwhile, the Ashanti, Central and Northern regions have a lot more voters who are planning to vote compared to those who do not plan to vote.

Results for the full sample have a margin of sampling error (with finite population correction) of plus or minus 3.482%. A representative sample of the Ghanaian population was achieved by weighting (matching) the data according to age and gender demographics of the 2010 population and housing census and the Ghana Living Standards Survey (GLSS 7).

Seven questions were asked in the first wave of the Ghana Election Poll and their corresponding results would be published within the next three weeks. The questions include:
    1. Do you plan to vote in the 2020 election?
    2. If the December 2020 elections were to be held today, which party do you feel will win?
    3. Do you think Akufo-Addo has fulfilled his promises well enough to deserve re-election?
    4. Do you think former President John Mahama deserves to return as President of Ghana?
    5. Do you think it is time to vote another party into power apart from the NDC and NPP?
    6. Do you feel there is a possibility of vote-rigging in the 2020 election?
    7. Who are you planning to vote for if the 2020 elections were held today?

The Ghana Election Poll is powered by GhanaWeb and the Africa Consumer Panel which is a cooperation between the digital publisher Africa Business Communities and renowned market research firm MSI-ACI.

The online poll is conducted every month and the results are published at the beginning of every other month on GhanaWeb.com. It is devoid of spam as the respondents can take the survey only once. The MSI-ACI platform that hosts the survey records the device on which the respondent takes the poll and does not allow for a second attempt from the same device.

The Ghana Election Poll is different from the open-access poll which is running on GhanaWeb. The latter allows participants to self-select into participation and its results cannot be generalized because it is a representative of only the participants of the poll.

  • I meet all requirements to vote NDC Cape Coast North Parliamentary Candidate

The Parliamentary Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Cape Coast North Constituency says he has legally challenged a decision by the District Registration Review Committee of the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) to withdraw his voter identity card.

Dr Kwamina Minta Nyarku was disqualified as a voter in the Constituency after he was found guilty for allegedly providing false information during registration.

His registration was, subsequently, challenged by a constituent, believed to be an agent of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), for not being a resident Nkanfoa, where he registered.

The Committee consequently sat on the case and ruled that the NDC Parliamentary Candidate does not qualify to be a voter in the Constituency.

But in a release on Tuesday, July 14, Dr Minta Nyarku says he meets all requirements to vote in Ghana contrary to the reports “and, indeed, I have participated in the previous elections conducted by the Electoral Commission of Ghana”.

“I have been voting in the Cape Coast North Constituency in the previous elections.

“I have been a resident and still a resident of the Cape Coast North Constituency.

” I currently reside in the electoral area where I recently registered in the on-going voters registration exercise.”

He has, therefore, urged his supporters and party faithfuls to be calm.

“The necessary legal steps to safeguard my constitutional rights are being considered and will be acted upon as soon as practicable.”

  • ‘No road, no vote’ – Adjei Kojo residents cry over ‘death trap’ roads

Residents of Adjei Kojo in the Tema West constituency have expressed worry about the bad nature of the roads in the area.

The major roads in Adjei Kojo have developed gaping potholes at certain segments, leaving motorists and residents who use them frustrated and in danger.

The residents lamented that the main road from Ashaiman leading to the Adjei Kojo, Kanewu, Suncity, and its environs were completely cut off making it impossible for vehicles to ply.

They expressed frustration over the continual neglect of the area by the incumbent Member of Parliament, Carlos Ahenkorah, and successive governments.

They lamented that the bad nature of the roads had brought untold hardship on them and that many precious lives had been lost on the road as a result of road crashes.

According to Michael Abayateye, the convener of a youth group called Concerned Youth of Adjei Kojo, the accidents were due to the bad nature of the road adding that “Adjei Kojo township has not seen any notable developmental projects over the past two decades…The only time we saw any government moving its resources to tackle the road situation in Adjei Kojo-Kanewu township was between 2008 and 2010. It was at this time that the road under the bridge to BBF junction was constructed. Though completed in a shoddy manner, it is worth mentioning.”

“The private car drivers, motorbikers, and commercial drivers who plough through our disastrous roads daily are always visiting the mechanic shops,” he added.

Michael hinted that the residents of the area were contemplating stopping politicians from undertaking political activities.

He said the MP, Carlos Ahenkorah and the Municipal Chief Executive of the Tema West Municipal Assembly, have ignored the numerous appeals the residents have been making and that the only choice left is for them to boycott and ban political activities in the area and declared that “no road, no vote”.

Some aggrieved drivers mentioned that the MP and the Assembly neglected Adjei Kojo because the area is perceived to be the stronghold of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The drivers who use the road also revealed how they always have to visit mechanics every time they ply the road.

They described the bad nature of the roads as streams on dams especially during the rainy season which makes movement difficult.

They, therefore, appealed to the roads authorities to come to their aid to end the death trap on their roads.
