West Ham hopes to make a ‘Jesse Lingard’ out of Kalvin Phillips

David Moyes is optimistic that Kalvin Phillips can achieve success similar to Jesse Lingard at West Ham.

The Manchester City player, who has only played for 89 minutes in the Premier League this season, recently joined The Hammers on loan.

Manager David Moyes is now hopeful that Phillips will rediscover his previous good form and contribute to the club in the remaining matches of the 2023–24 campaign.

Speaking to reporters, Moyes said, “His pedigree over the years has made me feel like he’s a player I’d like to have at the club. For some time, he’s been a mainstay of the England national team. He’s someone who has been a really good player. The move to the city hasn’t worked as well as he would have liked.”

He added, “This time a couple of years ago, we got Jesse Lingard; he really helped us. I’m hoping Kalvin can have a similar impact as Jesse had. Everybody has something to prove. Jesse had something to prove and Kalvin has as well. There is a big competition at the end of the season, where he’ll be hoping to be in good form.

“We’re talking about a boy with really good character. I heard Pep Guardiola’s comments about him and I would agree with those, having had him here for a week now. We want to see his footballing ability now. I think he’s got a chance now to get himself back on track. We’ve brought in another England international to our squad and that’s a big plus.”

Lingard joined West Ham on loan from Manchester United in the second half of the 2020–21 season. During his six-month stint at the club, the winger played in 16 Premier League matches, scoring nine goals and providing five assists.

West Ham finished sixth in the league that season. The former England international is currently not associated with any club, having been a free agent since leaving Nottingham Forest at the end of the 2022/23 season.

Moyes’ team, which hasn’t won in their last four games in all competitions, will be playing their next Premier League match against Bournemouth on Thursday.
