Video: Memphis Depay’s feels more Ghanaian than Dutch as he does ‘adowa’ after goal celebration against Granada

The Dutch-born footballer of Ghanaian descent, Memphis Depay showcased his connection to his Ghanaian heritage by performing the traditional Ghanaian dance Adowa after scoring an impressive goal against Granada on Monday, August 14, 2023.

Depay’s remarkable strike from outside the penalty area restored the lead for Atletico in their league opener, ultimately resulting in a 3-1 victory at the Civitas Metropolitan Stadium.

Immediately after the ball found the back of the net, he dashed towards the camera behind the goalpost, executing his signature ‘deaf’ celebration before transitioning into the Adowa dance.

Depay was captured learning this dance during his off-season trip to Ghana.

The Adowa dance holds cultural significance as a traditional dance of the Akan people.

This dance is typically performed during ceremonies such as festivals, funerals, engagements, and various celebrations.

The dancers use their hands extensively to convey their emotions and communicate effectively.
