Athletic Bilbao’s striker, Inaki Williams, quickly made an impact for his club just hours after returning to Spain from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where he played for the Black Stars.
Despite Ghana’s early exit from the AFCON with just two points in the group stage, Williams showcased his resilience by scoring for Athletic Bilbao upon his return.
His challenging start in the first two AFCON matches led to his being benched for the final, making it a frustrating campaign for the striker.
In Athletic Bilbao’s quarter-final clash against Barcelona in the Copa del Rey, Williams, who initially started on the bench, entered the game in the 59th minute.
He made a significant impact by providing an assist to his younger brother, Nico Williams, and later scoring a crucial goal in the 105th minute. This helped Athletic Bilbao secure a 4-2 victory over Barcelona and advance to the semi-finals.
The goals for Athletic Club also came from Gorka Guruzeta and Oihan Sancet, while Robert Lewandowski and Lamine Yamal scored consolation goals for Barcelona.
Williams’ return to goal-scoring form added to his impressive season tally of 10 goals in all competitions.
The news of his performance quickly gained traction on social media, with Inaki Williams and related terms trending on platforms like Accra trends on X (formerly Twitter).
