Late on Wednesday, January 24, 2023, several members of the senior national football team, the Black Stars, arrived in Accra from Ivory Coast after being eliminated from the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Online footage captured the arrival of notable players such as the Ayew brothers, Antoine Semenyo, and Gideon Mensah.
In the video shared by GhanaWeb, Andre Ayew graciously posed for photos with fans, while Jordan Ayew casually greeted onlookers, including his father, Abedi Pele, who was present at the airport to welcome his sons.
As of now, the Ghana Football Association has not released an official list detailing the number of players who returned home and those who departed for their respective bases from Ivory Coast.
One such player, forward Inaki Williams, flew back to Spain and notably contributed to his club’s victory over Barcelona in a cup match, scoring a goal after coming on as a substitute.
The Black Stars concluded the AFCON tournament with just two points, finishing behind group winners Cape Verde and second-placed Egypt, but ahead of Mozambique.
Criticism has been directed at specific players, as well as the leadership of the Ghana Football Association and the sports ministry.
Additionally, Coach Chris Hughton was dismissed by the FA on January 23, as it became evident that the team could not secure a spot in the knockout rounds as one of the best third-placed teams.
