Chelsea’s captain, Reece James, who has been grappling with injuries throughout the season, made headlines by setting a somewhat bizarre record when he was shown a red card in the match against Brighton on Wednesday.
James, who has struggled with hamstring issues, limiting him to only 10 Premier League appearances this season, entered the game as a substitute against Brighton.
However, his return to the pitch was short-lived as he was sent off for kicking out at striker Joao Pedro following a foul. The referee promptly brandished a straight red card after a VAR review.
With this red card, James now shares the distinction of having the most red cards in the Premier League this season.
What makes this achievement even more remarkable is the fact that he has played only 422 minutes, equivalent to less than five full games.
Two other players, Yves Bissouma of Tottenham and Oli McBurnie of Sheffield United, have also received two red cards each this season.
Additionally, James is not the sole Chelsea player to be sent off; Conor Gallagher and Malo Gusto have also been shown red cards.
As a consequence of his suspension, James will miss Chelsea’s final game of the season against Bournemouth on Sunday, with the possibility of the ban extending into the next season.
Currently placed sixth in the league, Chelsea could climb to fifth if they defeat Bournemouth, but this depends on Sheffield United defeating Ange Postecoglou’s side.
