Spanish prosecutor is seeking a nine-year prison term for former Barcelona and Brazil soccer player Dani Alves (40), who is set to stand trial on charges of sexual assault against a woman in Barcelona last year, according to a court document released on Thursday.
Alves, in custody since his arrest on January 20, allegedly assaulted a woman in the VIP area bathroom of a Barcelona nightclub in the early hours of December 31st, as outlined in the document.
Alves, who initially denied any sexual encounter, later claimed that the interaction was consensual.
The prosecutor is also requesting restraining orders for Alves post-sentence and a payment of €150,000 ($163,605.00) in damages to the woman.
In August, a court in the Barcelona area formally indicted Alves after finding evidence of wrongdoing, leading to the decision to proceed to trial.
A trial date has not been scheduled yet.
In Spain, rape allegations are investigated under the broader category of sexual assault, with convictions carrying prison sentences ranging from four to 15 years.
