Ghanaian right-back Harrison Afful registered an assist as Columbus Crew defeated New York City FC 1-0 in the Major League Soccer opener on Sunday.
Afful, who is in his sixth season at the club laid a tailor measured pass to Lucas Zelarayan who fired into the top corner to seal all three points for Crew at the MAPFRE Stadium.
Less than three minutes into the game, New York City FC defender Maxime Chanot was shown a red card for clipping the heel of Columbus Crew SC’s newest attacking midfielder, Lucas Zelarayan.
It was the third-fastest red card from the start of an MLS game and the earliest red we’ve seen in a season opener.
After a goalless first-half, Columbus took the lead in the 56th minute through Zelarayan following an assist from Harrison Afful.
Despite NYCFC’s best effort, they weren’t able to overcome the player deficit and the 1-0 scoreline stood after 90 minutes.
His compatriot Jonathan Mensah captained Columbus Crew in their first 2020 MLS game at home.
