Defender Anton Walkes passed away on Thursday as a result of an accident, according to Charlotte FC.
The 25-year-old was a former Tottenham academy player.
London-born Walkes began his MLS career in 2020 when, after leaving Portsmouth, he joined Atlanta United.
After being chosen in the MLS expansion draft in 2021, he relocated to Charlotte for the 2022 season and made 23 league appearances in his first season.

Following his shock death, Charlotte paid tribute to the family man.
Owner David Tepper said: “Everyone at [the club] is devastated by the tragic passing of Anton Walkes. He was a tremendous son, father, partner and teammate whose joyous approach to life touched everyone he met.
“Anton made those around him better people in all areas of life and represented Charlotte FC to the highest standard both on and off the pitch.
“He will be greatly missed by many and our thoughts and prayers are with Anton’s family during this heart-breaking time. The club offers its full support to all those impacted during this period of mourning.”
