The latest data from the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) indicates a positive trend in road safety, with a decline in road crashes, injuries, and deaths (CIDs) in the year 2023 compared to the previous year.
According to the statistics by the NRSA, there were 14,135 reported road crashes involving 23,998 vehicles, resulting in 2,276 fatalities. Additionally, 15,409 individuals sustained various degrees of injuries, and 2,559 pedestrians were involved in accidents.
In comparison to 2022, the current figures show a decline of 4.1% in deaths, 1.8% in injuries, and 5.5% in road crashes. In 2022, there were 14,960 reported crashes, leading to 2,373 fatalities and 15,690 injuries.
The Director-General of the NRSA, David Osafo Adonteng, attributed the reduction in CIDs to a decrease in figures for major regions such as Greater Accra, Ashanti, and Eastern. He emphasized the need to sustain effective measures in these regions to contribute to the overall reduction nationally.
Gender-wise, 21% of the total deaths were females (470), while males accounted for 79% (1,806). Age-wise, 14% of the deceased were below 18 years, and 86% were above 18.
A breakdown of fatalities by region revealed that Greater Accra, Ashanti, and Eastern regions had the highest numbers, with 485, 438, and 414 deaths, respectively.
The collaboration between various stakeholders, including the DVLA, Police MTTD, transport unions, and advocates, was emphasized as crucial in further reducing CIDs.
